THE GAME

Diversas ações propostas e realizadas por simpatizantes, amigos e padrinhos foram muito significativas. “Várias coisas foram dando certo. A gente celebrou cada pequena ação e cada grande conquista, contabilizando o que era possível fazer com os resultados: mais quinze dias de atividade, mais um mês, a garantia do 130 salário. E assim fomos até o final do ano”, conta Luciane.

Um convite para se unir à campanha Abrace o Brasil, da BrazilFoundation, que tinha o propósito de ajudar 100 instituições brasileiras, foi mais uma oportunidade de alavancar recursos. A meta, ousada, de R$ 100 mil, foi ultrapassada: R$ 110 mil. WimBelemDon foi a segunda melhor campanha em valor arrecadado. Num jantar de gala da fundação, que tinha como objetivo apresentar alguns dos projetos apoiados durante a campanha, Marcelo conseguiu, ainda, oferecer um bate-bola com Meligeni, “que não era para ser leilão”, ele assegura. Mas, numa quebra de protocolo da mestre de cerimônias, a atriz Ingrid Guimarães, acabou virando um, no improviso. Mais um game para o projeto.

UM ANO-TESTE

2018 começou com boas notícias para WimBelemDon. Uma liminar da Justiça Federal reconheceu o status de filantropia e isentou a ONG do pagamento de impostos da cota patronal – o processo teve atuação pro bono do escritório Rafael Pandolfo Advogados Associados. Essa decisão gerou um impacto financeiro significativo: uma economia anual em torno de R$ 150 mil. A ONG foi aprovada num edital da BrazilFoundation e da Fundação Itaú Social para um projeto de desenvolvimento institucional e ainda recebeu um aporte extra para desenvolvimento territorial: WimBelemdon teve a chance de indicar duas iniciativas da região sul de Porto Alegre para receberem o o apoio da ONG.

Tudo corria bem quando, no dia 4 de abril, na hora do almoço, uma das crianças que se arrumava para ir à escola alertou para a fumaça calling on people to collaborate and contribute with the project, under threat of closure. We celebrated each small action and each big achievement, budgeting what we could do with the results: staying open for another fortnight, another month, paying the staff’s Christmas bonus. And so we made it to the end of the year”, Luciane recalls. An invitation to join the Embrace Brazil campaign from BrazilFoundation, which aimed to help 100 Brazilian charities, was another opportunity to fundraise. The rather bold target of R$ 100,000 was exceeded by ten thousand. WimBelemDon was the second most successful fundraiser. At a gala dinner thrown by the foundation to showcase some of the projects supported by the campaign, Marcelo also managed to offer a hitting session with Meligeni, “which was not meant to be an auction”, he stresses. But breaking the ceremony protocol, the MC, actress Ingrid Guimarães, ended up improvising an auction. Another game won by the project.

A Testing Year

2018 began with good news for WimBelemDon. A court order recognised our philanthropic status and exempted the NGO from paying payroll tax. This decision generated a significant financial impact: anual savings of approximately R$ 150,000. The NGO was also the winner of a BrazilFoundation and Itaú Social Foundation tender for a territorial development project. Thus, WimBelemDon received financial support to strengthen the institution and extra support for territorial development, with the possibility of recommending two other charities in the Southside of Porto Alegre to be leveraged by the project.

Everything was going well until the 4th April, when, at lunchtime, one of the children who was getting que vinha do banheiro feminino. Era fogo. Alex, o auxiliar de serviços gerais do projeto, identificou o local que estava em chamas e, com um extintor de incêndio, quase conseguiu apagar. Mas elas continuaram a se alastrar no telhado. Sem alarde, as crianças foram avisadas sobre o problema e retiradas do refeitório. “O meu bife, eu vou levar!”, disse uma delas, lembra Luciane, ao contar que a saída da sede foi mais tranquila do que a sensação de deixar para trás o almoço delicioso que Rose tinha preparado naquele dia.

Luciane ficou com as crianças na praça em frente ao projeto enquanto parte da equipe tentava salvar computadores e documentos na sala administrativa ao lado do vestiário. The children were calmly informed about the issue and evacuated from the canteen. “I’m taking my steak with me!”, one of them said, as Luciane recalls, emphasising that the evacuation process was less stressful than the thought of leaving behind the delicious lunch Rose had made that day.

po. Quando apareceu o segundo caminhão, as crianças se deram conta de que o incêndio era mais sério do que parecia, entraram em desespero e começaram a chorar.

O fogo se alastrou rapidamente pelo forro, que era usado como depósito para doações e materiais do projeto, como raquetes, bolinhas e uniformes. “Muitas das coisas estavam lacradas ainda, novinhas. As doações eram para o nosso bazar de inverno. Tudo isso se perdeu”, lamenta Luciane. Em seguida, as crianças foram encaminhadas para suas casas e a equipe se uniu para tentar amenizar o impacto daquele desastre.

“Depois de dois anos difíceis, com o projeto ameaçado de fechar, começamos 2018 muito otimistas. Não dava para acreditar no que estava acontecendo.”

Mas a tristeza e o abatimento não duraram 24 horas. No outro dia, todos estavam prontos para colocar a casa em ordem. Fizeram a “mudança” para a sala multiuso e, com SACOS DE LIXO E PÁS NAS MÃOS, SEM LAMENTAÇÕES, LIMPARAM TODA A BAGUNÇA, RECORDA LUCIANE. “Sabíamos que iríamos virar o jogo. Nossa maior preocupação eram as crianças. Como ficar longe delas?”

O laudo dos Bombeiros atestava a gravidade do ocorrido. O espaço estava interditado. Além do vestiário e da sala administrativa, a estrutura do telhado havia sido destruída. Colocar tudo em pé novamente levaria tempo e custaria dinheiro. A parte boa: a ajuda chegou rápido. Como tenta definir Marcelo: foi uma campanha sem campanha. As mensagens de apoio recebidas eram acompanhadas de ofertas de auxílio. Houve doações em dinheiro, material, knowhow e até serviços, como lavanderia, para tirar o cheiro de fumaça dos uniformes. “Percebemos a importância de ser um projeto sério e de ter respaldo e relacionamento. A imprensa teve um papel fundamental (na divulgação do ocorrido), assim como os embaixadores e a associação com empresas. Do limão, fez-se uma limonada. But when the second fire engine arrived, the children realised the fire was more dangerous than it had seemed and began to despair and cry.

The fire quickly spread throughout the loft, which was used as a storage space for donations and other project materials, such as racquets, tennis balls and uniforms. “Many of the things there were still in sealed bags, brand new. The donations were for our winter garage sale. Everything was lost”, Luciane laments. The children were soon sent home and the team got together to try and mitigate the impact of such a disaster. “After two difficult years, with the threat of closure, 2018 was looking up. We couldn’t believe what was going on ”. But the sadness and the hopelessness didn’t even last 24 hours. The next day, everyone was ready to put the house in order. They moved to the multipurpose classroom with BIN BAGS AND SHOVELS IN HAND, AND WITHOUT A WORD OF COMPLAINT, CLEARED THE WHOLE MESS, LUCIANE RECALLS. “We knew we could turn the game around. Our main concern was the children. How to stay away from them?”

The Fire Brigade report detailed the gravity of the occurrence. The space had been sealed off. In addition to the changing rooms and the administrative office, the whole roof structure had been destroyed. Rebuilding everything would take time and money. The good news was that help wasn’t long in coming. As Marcelo tries to explain: it was a campaign without campaigning. The messages of support received came with offers to help. There were donations of money, materials, expertise and even services, such as laundry to remove the smell of smoke from the uniforms. “We see how important it is to be a serious project and having backup and relationships. The media played a fundamental part (by publicising what had happened), and so did the ambassadors and our corporate network. We made lemonade out of the lemons. WimBelemDon managed to transform

Para o ex-presidente Rafael Mottin, o incêndio foi transformador, um novo ponto de partida. “Do WimBelemDon como projeto e das pessoas. Aquele caos instaurado motivou todo mundo e trabalhar para tudo dar certo.” Por conta das arrecadações, a obra foi maior do que se esperava.

A estrutura do telhado passou a ser toda metálica, doada pela Medabil; a sala administrativa e os vestiários foram totalmente reformados; foi criada uma nova área de depósito para os materiais usados nas atividades, maior do que a anterior, ao lado da quadra de tênis; houve ampliação do sistema de captação da água da chuva; e foi feito um novo calçamento, da entrada do projeto até a sala multiuso.

Antes de tudo isso estar pronto, as equipes administrativa e técnica continuavam apertadas na sala multiuso, único lugar habitável da ONG, usando banheiros químicos alugados. Para as crianças, foi criado um Plano B: 20 dias após o incêndio, o atendimento foi retomado duas vezes na semana, na sede campestre da Ajuris – Associação dos Juízes do RS, espaço já conhecido delas, das atividades de férias.

O atributo da Honestidade cedeu lugar ao da Perseverança, adequado àquele contexto. As atividades dos educandos, à beira do rio, no inverno, eram emolduradas por frio, vento forte, chuvaradas. NA SEDE, A EQUIPE SE DESDOBRAVA PARA PREPARAR 60 QUENTINHAS NOS DIAS DE ATIVIDADES, POIS O ALMOÇO CONTINUOU A SER SERVIDO – na Ajuris, para aquelas que frequentavam o projeto pela manhã, e no refeitório da escola Evarista Flores da Cunha, para aquelas que estudavam pela manhã e depois se deslocavam para a ONG.

For the former Presidente Rafael Mottin, the fire was transformative, a new beginning. “Both for WimBelemDon as a project and for the people. That chaos drove everyone to work harder to make things right”. Thanks to the funds raised, the construction work was much larger than expected. The roof structure was now made entirely of metal donated by Medabil; the administrative office and the changing rooms were completely renovated; a new storage area was created for the materials used in the activities, much larger than the previous one and right next to the court; the rainwater harvesting system was expanded; and a new pavement was built from the entrance gate to the multi-purpose classroom .

Before all of that was ready, the administrative and technical teams squeezed in the multi-purpose classroom, only usable place in the NGO, using rented portable toilets. For the children, a plan B was created: 20 days after the fire, activities resumed twice a week at the AJURIS [Association of Judges of the State of Rio Grande do Sul] facilities, a space that they already knew from their school holidays.

The attribute of Honesty gave way to Perseverance, appropriate for the context. The pupils’ activities by the river in winter were subject to the cold, strong winds, pouring rain. AT THE HEADQUARTERS, THE TEAM BENT OVER BACKWARDS TO PREPARE 60 HOT MEALS TO TAKEAWAY ON ACTIVITY DAYS, BECAUSE LUNCH CONTINUED TO BE SERVED – at AJURIS, to the children who came to the project in the morning, and in the Evarista Flores da Cunha school refectory to the children who studied in the morning and then went to the NGO.

In small groups, the children visited the site throughout six months and on the 15th October, made their definitive return to the headquarters. A week later, a new group of pupils started at the seis meses e, no dia 15 de outubro, retornaram definitivamente à sede. Uma semana depois, uma nova turma de educandos começava a fazer parte do projeto. Tudo era motivo de comemoração. Então, no dia 31 de outubro, quando o projeto fez 18 anos, foi realizado o primeiro HaloweenBelemDon, uma grande festa que reuniu educandos, educadores, famílias, amigos e apoiadores do projeto. Empresas, instituições e pessoas que contribuíram decisivamente para a recuperação da sede foram homenageadas.

Em novembro, mais uma boa notícia: WimBelemDon reconhecido como uma das 100 Melhores ONGs do Brasil pelo segundo ano consecutivo. E, em dezembro, o mais tradicional evento do projeto, o Rolando Arroz, foi retomado, na sua 9a edição, e trouxe de volta a oportunidade de as crianças conviverem com alguns dos grandes nomes do tênis brasileiro. Junto dos embaixadores Fernando Meligeni e Thomaz Koch, os tenistas convidados Givaldo Barbosa e Marcelo Demoliner esbanjaram bom humor, amizade e solidariedade dentro e fora da quadra.

AFTER THE FIRE, THE ROOF STRUCTURE WAS REBUILT ENTIRELY IN METAL project. Everything was a reason to celebrate. Then on 31st October, on the project’s 18th anniversary, the first HaloweenBelemDon was held, a big party gathering pupils, educators, families, friends and project supporters. Businesses, institutions, and people whose contribution was decisive to recover the facilities received an homage. In November, more good news: WimBelemDon was recognised as one of the top 100 NGOs in Brazil for the second year running. And in December, the most traditional of the project’s events, Rolando Arroz, was back for its 9th edition, bringing back the opportunity for the children to spend some time with some of the great names of Brazilian tennis. Together with ambassadors Fernando Meligeni and Thomaz Koch, guest tennis players Givaldo Barbosa and Marcelo Demoliner displayed all their good humour, friendship and solidarity on and off the court.
