crianças que queriam um colo, queriam ficar aninhadas. É uma troca espontânea. ISSO NÃO TEM PREÇO. Eu saía de lá revigorada.

Outra coisa legal: as crianças se ajudam, se apoiam. Não tem competição. É como uma grande família, todos ajudando o outro a ser melhor. Tem a brincadeira. Tem a disciplina. Desde o início. O mais importante é passar para as crianças a mensagem de que estamos lá porque nos importamos com elas. Acredito que isso é feito no projeto de várias formas e elas veem, sentem.

Eu falava tanto no WimBelemDon, que meu marido ficou curioso. Meus filhos mais velhos também. Queria que ele ajudasse, mas ele falava que não colocaria o nome dele num trabalho que não tivesse certeza de que era ético e idôneo. Então ele foi conhecer e também ficou apaixonado. Tornou-se padrinho e convenceu a empresa em que ele trabalhava a apoiar o projeto.

É uma alegria imensa ver crianças que conhecemos pequenininhas se tornarem profissionais de sucesso, pessoas legais. Adultas, casadas, seguindo com seus estudos, com suas vidas. Foram tantas lágrimas –de alegria, de tristeza –, foram tantas pequenas vitórias. Não tem como explicar o sentimento de saber que o trabalho está dando resultado. É uma sensação de estar no caminho certo, de dever cumprido.”

“Em março de 2003, quando cheguei ao WimBelemDon, eu tinha recém parado de jogar tênis profissional e não tinha muito clareza sobre como funcionava o terceiro setor. Deparei-me com uma realidade totalmente diferente da minha, com crianças que nunca tinham tido contato com o tênis. Embora elas não entendessem muito como era a raquete, a bola, tudo era ferramenta para que começassem uma nova fase da vida delas.

seeing how unfair the world is, with so many children suffering and so many indifferent people. On the other hand, a look, the smallest sign of affection is enough for them to feel loved. They will suddenly open their arms and show their love. It has been incredibly rewarding in this respect! Words, letters, hugs from children that wanted to be comforted, to be cuddled. It’s a PRICELESS spontaneous exchange. I always left feeling reinvigorated.

Another lovely thing is the kids help each other out, they support each other. There is no competition. It really is like a large family, everyone helping each other to be the best they can be. There is playtime. There is discipline. From the very start. The most important message to pass on to the children is that we are there because we care about them. I believe this is done really well in the project in many ways and the kids know and feel it. I spoke so much about WimBelemDon that my husband got curious. So did my elder children. I wanted him to help out, but he was reticent about getting involved with work that he couldn’t be certain was ethical and wholesome. Then he went to visit and fell in love. He became a patron and convinced the company he worked for to support the project too.

It is an immense joy to see the children we’ve known since they were tiny become successful professionals, cool people. See them grow into adulthood, get married, continue their studies and their lives. There have been so many tears – sad and happy – and so many small victories. It is hard to explain the feeling of knowing that the work is bearing fruit. It’s a feeling of being in the right path, of accomplishment”.
