Our 39ft Catamaran “DaVinci” is named after our iconic Italian restaurant in the south of Phuket Island. This locally built catamaran can take up to 12 passengers comfortably for a day trip or sleep up to eight people for overnight stays. This cruising catamaran is equipped with four cabins, two doubles and two singles as well a sleeping area for two in the main cockpit above deck. DaVinci is equipped with a fully functioning galley including a refrigerator and freezer as well as a dining area in the main cockpit. DaVinci S50 is equipped with a fully functioning galley with an air conditioned dining area which can seat up to eight people. The dinghy ramp at the opposite end of Soi Sukee and close to “The Lighthouse” makes for easy collection and delivery subject to tidal restrictions (see page 22 for tide tables).

Invisible yacht wins Langkawi Regatta trophy We won! That is we won six out of our 10 races. We won the regatta series trophy. And we won the ‘Malaysian Multihull Challenge’ Cup. Oh… and we also won the coveted ‘Tunku Abdullah Sportsmanship Award’, voted by participants for competitiveness, fair racing and comradeship on and off the water (although in our case more likely because of our ‘clown’ makeup…). Not a bad haul, really.

And we did all of it while invisible – or at least, invisible to the Royal Langkawi International Regatta’s (RLIR) official photographer, who took thousands of photos but (on most days) none of the leading multihull, Niña. Multihull racers are accustomed to the invisible nature of their chosen yacht style when it comes to racing. The glamour boys and girls in those big, can’t-stay-upright, racing yachts get all the glory – and the photo gallery haul.
Multihullers, however, take comfort in the fact that, unlike their monohull counterparts, the dry martinis don’t need lashing down when there’s a bit of breeze. Of course there are always exceptions and, had the recalcitrant photographer been around, he’d have got some prize-winning shots of Niña’s unseemly acrobatics (bum high in the sky) in a particularly strong gust on the home run from the Round-theIsland-Race. But, of course, we were still invisible...
Joking aside, RLIR takes the prize as our favourite regatta; we can live without the snapshots. We compete each year in four regattas: RLIR (January), Bay Regatta (February/March), Phuket’s Multihull Regatta (July) and Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek (CPHPRW) (July). After a few entries, we ditched Phuket’s biggest regatta, King’s Cup, as too tedious, too expensive and remarkably downmarket onshore. Let’s run through what makes or breaks the rest…

Regatta But what really makes the difference for Phuket-based boats is that it’s not here! How many of us have a yacht in Phuket, but rarely find time to take it out of Phuket waters? I see a lot of hands raised… RLIR provides the perfect excuse, following hard on the heels of the over-indulgence of the festive season, to get on board and get away – cruising down and back through some of the most beautiful and peaceful islands in the area. The regatta is five days of sailing, but the journey down and back can be as long as you want (if you’re retired) or as long as you can get away (for those of us still earning the bucks).

Phuket’s Multihull Regatta is the one where the photographers have no choice but to shoot multihulls and has great racing in usually good breezes. Ashore, to say it’s laid back would be an understatement; let’s call it the ‘no-party regatta’ in a region where regatta parties are traditionally part of the ‘deal’. Nothing wrong with the event, which sets out to be ‘low key‘, a fact reflected in the cost of entry.
On the water, RLIR offers three completely different options for racing: in the harbour, offshore and around the islands. Clever race management makes the most of all three to provide five days of incredibly varied courses. Onshore, regatta management is getting to grips with its parties, too, and the standards (including a reserved-seat system for the final night) are improving every year.

Bay Regatta, the cruisers’ live-aboard event, races through great scenery in Phang Nga Bay but often struggles for wind and, to be frank, the parties do leave a lot to be desired. It has also become, in 2015, the most expensive regatta on ‘our’ circuit.

This quaint and colourful little backstreet connecting Thalang and Dibuk roads may seem innocuous enough but it has a raunchy past as it was a hundred years ago lined with brothels and the odd opium den servicing Chinese labourers and tin miners. Nowadays, it’s a cheerful and photogenic place lined with coffee shops, cute little hostels, and art galleries. One of the most singular aspects of Soi Romanee is that it has no ugly overhead power cables that afflict the rest of downtown Phuket. 3

When did you move to Phuket? I'm based in Bangkok, but I do travel back and forth to Phuket. My son, Kim, lives there with his family and he also runs 'the mansion', which we opened four years ago.
Simple place with a few plastic chairs, no air conditioner but packed every day. Offers a great variety of fresh ice creams. Prices start at 28 baht for four scoops of your choice , ranging up to 40 baht. 'Special' highly recommended is the deep-fried ice cream.
Also, we have cooking classes designed to explain the ‘secrets’ of Thai cuisine and sometimes I attend food seminars too! Recently, I was invited to attend a food seminar in Hat Yai and tasted Southern Thai cuisine, which is extremely spicy! I discovered some interesting dishes and totally love the flavours. It makes me want to promote southern Thai cuisine even more in my restaurant and worldwide! You also promote what some term as ‘forgotten’ Thai dishes That’s right – some of the older dishes we like to serve up at Blue Elephant date from the time when Rama II was on the throne, before coconut milk was used in recipes. As a result, they're quite different. Examples include tumi curry with giant grouper – a Penang-influenced sweet and sour curry with dahla flowers, okra and cucumber. And then there’s one of the oldest dishes around, gaeng som, another sour dish with no coconut milk. In fact it may be the oldest Thai dish. Is Thai food actually good for you? Of course, but you have to be sure to have the freshest of ingredients. People sometimes say it's too sweet and therefore unhealthy, but if you use natural palm sugar and make the right choice of oil it's extremely healthy. Is the Phuket Branch of Blue Elephant different from other branches? Yes! We're lucky to have an organic garden, where we grow local herbs and spices which we use in our cuisine. And we're located in the eight rai grounds of this amazing historical mansion, which gives us the chance to create magical events such as weddings and corporate events. Once my son, Kim, even organised an elephant polo game in our garden.

Do you own a house or rent one? We're looking at buying a 'dream house' or a piece of land. In the meantime, my son rents the house he lives in. What do you like most about Phuket? Oh, it’s far more relaxing than Bangkok. Here, the traffic's pretty heavy but not as bad as Bangkok – and at least you can have the chance to go and relax on a beach. And I really feel at home here in Phuket. The locals, especially in Phuket Town, are so friendly.

How do you evaluate success? Success for me is a team thing, with everyone pulling together in unity. I like working in a team and leading people in a gentle sort of way but definitely working together. We have many branches in many different locations and we couldn’t do this sort of thing without a large degree of teamwork. That’s success.

Managing Director of Emerald Phuket Development When did you set up the business? We established it in 2007. What was behind your decision to set up this particular business in Phuket? Having gained quite a lot of property management experience in the past from my family’s business and from working for a public real estate company, it was also good that I was able to help my friend’s property to make a success of its comeback by investing in the company as a joint venture. Considering my capabilities, together with my personal interest in this field, I decided to set up my own business.

After graduation, I helped my family to develop a small-scale real estate company in my hometown Nakhon Si Thammarat then studied for an MBA, worked at a management level for a public real estate company for five years, and then came to Phuket. Tell us something about your role in the business. As managing director, I set the vision and strategies with my teams; the design team, sales team and production team. I recognise the importance of many factors. However, understanding the market needs and predicting the future market trends has become one of the most crucial parts of running a successful organisation. What changes have you seen in the market in your business sector since you started? And how have you responded to them? Purchasing power has decreased, particularly for properties worth more than 10 million baht. Thus, we developed high-quality properties that are priced not too low and not too high to cater to this market change. As a result, we have received a reasonable increase in sales in the Asian market while sales to the European market have slowed down. Is The Emerald Group involved in any CSR programmes? Yes, our CSR programmes count the beach cleanup in Patong, Phuket Football Clinic to Phuket students, and we held the Emerald EPL Masters Tour Phuket 2014 between All Stars English Premier League Player Legends and Thai Legends in August 2014 to promote Phuket tourism and to encourage locals to participate in international sports. Our organisation also makes regular donations to support disadvantaged children in Phuket.

What are the biggest difficulties you have to overcome? To manage people – agents, clients, staff, designers and business partners. In other words to manage people with different perspectives but who have the same objectives to successfully work together. What do you like most about what you do now? I like planning and problem solving; there are issues that I have to think, plan and discuss with my teams every day. How would you describe your leadership style? Transformational and coaching style; I inspire and value opinions from my staff. I put passion and energy into everything and I care about the people I work with. I want us to succeed together. What do you see as your biggest successes to date? I have a very good team today and we have achieved satisfactory results in our projects. Also, we have a good relationship with Starwood Hotels & Resorts and we look forward to the opening of the Sheraton Phuket Kalim Beach Resort in early 2018. What do you and the business hope to achieve within the next three-to-five years? To develop a fully self-contained community that has all necessary amenities (not just to develop a property and sell) and to become a public company in five years’ time to create stability. What is your overriding ambition at this stage in your life? To have a sense of achievement in life professionally and personally it is essential that I see that the people with whom I work are happy. They appear to be very wealthy, surely that means they are successful? Does your prospective business partner appear to be focused on making you overly comfortable and relaxed before you make a decision? Were you invited to a very expensive hotel lobby for a business meeting but appeared to be steered away from the business and office environment at all times? Are most meetings apparently peppered with alcohol, or offers of it, or seemingly unnecessary fine dining? Are there any credible independent persons who are able to confirm the status and standing of the persons you are dealing with?
Avoiding fly-by-night companies in Thailand n a world of information, the opportunity to check out a company you plan to do business with ought to be straightforward. However, companies and individuals who are experts in acting in good faith, cheating investors and consumers, are generally also very good at controlling the information disseminated about them.

You should question every aspect of the early stages of doing business with someone. Wealth may exist, but it may have been generated by dubious means. Self-made wealth is not necessarily less credible than inherited wealth, but in both cases the manner in which wealth was originally acquired and accumulated will be a clue to the experience you will have dealing with those persons.
On the flipside, some good companies suffer cyber-attacks in a completely unjustified manner, due to a disgruntled employee or through extortionate and shakedown behaviour which can often be underpinned with “I will set up a website attacking you” or “I will post negatively about you on Facebook etc.” How can a foreigner planning to do business with Thais in Thai companies, or with foreigners involved in Thai companies, or with individuals, conduct sensible due diligence and make appropriate enquiries into the standing of those entities? There are some practical and legal checks that can be carried out and it is recommended that neither are missed. Can I just conduct a high level online search and learn everything I need to for a small administrative fee? No. You will find when you conduct this search through an online agent that many of the search results will be blank or out of date for the smaller private companies. It may be the records haven’t been updated, or the company has filed its accounts late. Further, a lot of the information you will get through such a company can also be sourced very quickly through local searches and checks. What sort of local checks should I make? You should check if there is any litigation in the courts lodged against the Thai company you plan to deal with. You should further check if there is any litigation lodged against their directors or their shareholders – each and every one of them. The check should reveal any civil or criminal cases filed. Often some interesting results might come up such as: civil litigation regarding dispute between investors; cheque fraud; failure to pay credit card bills; gambling or drug cases; filing of false documentation with the authorities. Clearly if a search reveals any such activity, you should seek advice on whether to inform the other party, or simply walk away from doing business with them. The principle of ‘innocent until proven guilty’ must be applied in many cases, and it should be noted that other parties can file vexatious cases quite easily, which in itself can damage a reputation even if there is no truth in the case or claims made. You should also check the basic details of the company online through the Department of Business Development (DBD) website and obtain from the offices of the DBD the latest shareholders list, or even all historical shareholders lists, so you can track the changes in the company, and the filed accounts of the company as far back as you wish. You should also obtain a copy of the constitution documents of the company and pass these to a lawyer to check and comment on. How important is a place of business? This is still an important aspect of business even with the rise in use of serviced office space and temporary co-located space. Some business people choose not to splash out on grandiose office space simply because they are wise with their money and focused on the

real aspects of their business. Further, trends in certain sectors mean that too much office space is wasteful and illogical – such as the IT sector where business people often utilise space in a clever manner. However, for many, the substance of a company is supported by its presence and roots in countries where it operates. It is so easy now to place a map on a location page on a website and simply represent a wide cover of jurisdictions to make a company seem more successful or more well-established than it really is. Try telephoning the offices on their land lines, try to contact managers or owners of the business and see what kind of communications you encounter. This will be crucial for you doing business with these companies and people in the future. The location of a business can also be a giveaway – offices on the corners of red light districts are not particularly confidence inspiring.
I am told they are from a ‘good family’. I am from what I consider to be a ‘good family’ in my country – that must be a perfect match!? This all depends of course on the value you attach to the cultural, moral and ethical values of persons and companies you do business with and is therefore a very subjective topic. If you don’t value environmental ethics, then a business which involves forest clearance may sit well with you or you may be fussy about the way in which the forests are cleared and new sustainable use of the land is used, for example. If you are presented with an introduction to a ‘good family’ – then exercise care and caution as you would anywhere in the world. Make sure you look at the family as a whole – maybe the father or mother are very successful, but there may be an errant son or
HUGHESKRUPICA CONSULTING daughter who is engaged in illegal activities. Once you become embroiled with such a family, any reputational smear will attach itself to you and your business. Your idea of a good family may be of an open-minded, welcoming, politically centric, morally upright and honest group of people. Another person’s idea of a ‘good family’ may be a family that is in bed with dubious ‘connected’ persons; or a family that will stop at nothing to acquire more wealth that you can share in if you adopt their standards of behaviour. Getting to know a family takes time. Take the time to do so. You can test your relationships deliberately by trying to have a mini-argument about something non-consequential; or ask to borrow a very small sum of money temporarily to see what kind of reaction you get. There are many ways to work out the truth behind such relationships. Check everything, and then check again In summary, your checks on companies and individuals should span legal, commercial, accounting, tax and personal. You shouldn’t overlook checks due to being in a hurry and you shouldn’t feel invasive by asking questions that ordinary business people ask before committing to a business transaction. Do not swap cultural sensitivity for business naivety. This is a fine balance to tread. You may need help with judging how best to proceed.

Which practical checks should I make? This is one of my favourite topics. You should never stop checking the status of parties you plan to do business with, and you should continue to check even after you are already doing business together. You should ask who their main business contacts are, and see what sort of businesses they are connected and associated with. If the answer you receive cites some very well established and large businesses you should take care to obtain names of the individuals in such a large organisation. You should also test to see whether it would be considered OK for you to talk to such contacts. If the reaction if negative, ‘flaky’ or hesitant, it may be the contacts are contrived, made up or a lot less substantive than is being represented. They told me they are “well connected” – that must be a great asset in a business partner, right? Not necessarily. Well connected can have good and bad connotations. If “well connected” is meant to mean that the scope of business contacts and the standing of business contacts is strong, that the business contacts operate in the highest sphere of a business segment or market in a principled manner, then that would be a good sign. It is also not unusual in Thailand for high value to be placed on contacts in Government offices, simply to understand the often complex processes and procedures that are not transparent to many. However, the negative aspect of a party stating they are “well connected” can be as follows: the connection is dubious or involves corrupt practices; the connection is there to ‘protect’ or be an ‘overseer’ whilst bad or illegal practices are conducted; or the connections may be used against you should you ever have even a simple dispute with your business partner. Be careful whom you marry; be careful who you sign a contract with.

• Oh Aew: An unbeatable Phuket dessert which is made from jellied banana-flour mixed with boiled red beans, ice and sweet red syrup
The oldest Chinese school in Phuket, Thai Hua School was built in 1911 and is now the Thai Hua Museum, a community and exhibition centre for Baba arts and culture and influences. (Baba culture is a product of mixed Malay-Chinese marriages interractions, predominantly based in Malaka, Penang and Phuket.) The museum is a two-storey building, the upper level balconied internally to look down on the ground floor. Some of the old schoolrooms still retain old school desks and photographs of former students. The Phuket Thai Hua Museum is on Krabi Road and is open Tuesday to Friday from 1-8pm, Saturday and Sunday from 9am-8pm. Entrance is free. It's certainly worth a visit. 81 B4

Bungy jump: Taking a flying leap is an activity certain to get the heart racing and Jungle Bungy Jump in Kathu has been providing some bungee jump thrills for more than 20 years in Phuket. Diving off a platform at a height of 50 metres and plunging towards a small lake doesn’t seem like the most sensible thing to do but that’s the point – the aim is to rev up the adrenaline and for just one moment know what it feels like to fly free like an eagle. Jump!
• Oh Tao: (Also known as Hoi Tod Hokgian). This is a fried oyster dish prepared with eggs, flour, bean sprouts and taro root. It’s a favourite Phuket snack. • Arpong: One of Phuket famous local desserts. The flavour is quite sweet – it’s a golden-yellow roll desert which is soft inside and crispy on the outside. The ingredients for Arpong are rice flour, egg yolk, coconut milk, water, salt and yeast. These ingredients are mixed together, then stored overnight. Then, when it’s time to create Arpong, the mixture is divided amongst tiny pans and spread into a circle. 53 D4
Go karting: Go karting offers a behind-the-wheel adventure using specially designed vehicles to race around a track. Kids especially love the thrill of becoming a mini F1 driver for the day, while children not ready to take the wheel may ride along with an adult on a two-seater go kart. The most elaborate go cart track is at Phuket Go Kart Speedway in Kathu, while another track may be found next to Phuket Shooting Range in Chalong.
• Loba: A local Phuket local dish which is made from head, ears, tongue and entrails of pigs and stewed in soy sauce, then deep fried served with fresh cucumber and sweet, sour and spicy sauce. • Dim Sum: This is a steamed dumpling, filled with a choice of every imaginable variety of sweet or savoury filling, sometimes accompanied by Chinese herb chicken soup and condiments. • Mee Hok Kian: This is made with large yellow noodles similar to Japanese Soba. Mee Hok Kian can be served with pork-bone soup and/or dried noodles. A delightful variety known as Mee Hok Kian Pak includes fried noodles, soup, egg, fried onions, pork crackling and a choice of pork, fish or squid. • Mee Sue: Phuket’s breakfast noodles with a salty taste and white colour when uncooked are boiled and flavoured with oriental spices. They can be served with sliced pork or chicken accompanied by boiled rice or rice soup.
This is the most popular and largest of all the viewpoints. The area has been developed to offer extensive views over the sea and there are walking paths from the cliffs to the water's edge for the adventurous. But do take care close to the cliffs! This is nature. The sunsets are absolutely breathtaking and never the same two days running. If you're romantically inclined, this is the place to come in the evenings and hold hands as the setting sun paints the evening skies in towering kaleidoscopes of light and shade.
