Check out Monkey Hill Viewpoint
Phuket has plenty to keep you entertained during a visit, even though it's much smaller and more laid back than Bangkok. Here are a few suggestions.
Monkey Hill (Khao To Sae). This hill towers over Phuket City and is easily spotted as the crest is crowded with wireless masts. The approach road is narrow but in reasonable condition, and allows views of the island’s eastern beaches. At the top, is a jogging track. The hill is a favourite place for locals who come here after a day at the office to exercise or just to chill out. There are no specific facilities provided but it is very pleasant to visit the Khao To Sae shrine and pay your respects. Well worth a visit if you can make the time. Don’t forget to bring a bag of peanuts to feed the monkeys who inhabit the hilltop. However, a word of warning; don’t get too close. The monkeys are wild. How to get there: From Damrong Road pass the Provincial Land Office and the Provincial Court on the left hand side, and then turn left onto To Sae road. 82 E1
View Historic Buildings Karon Viewpoint Sometimes referred to as the 'Three Bay Viewpoint', it's located between Nai Harn and Kata Noi Beaches. This is a tastefully developed facility with a Thai-style sala, which offers superb views on several levels. From here Kata Noi, Kata and Karon beaches can be seen and out to sea is Koh Poo (Island). Without doubt one of the island's best views! How to get there: Karon Viewpoint is located along the road between Kata Beach and Nai Harn Beach, just five kilometres from Kata Beach.

A hundred years ago, Phuket City had a prosperous economy based on tin mining, and even back then was an international centre with a large expatriate community of Chinese and Europeans. They built beautiful homes in the style called SinoPortuguese – terraced townhouses with narrow frontages and accommodations which stretch back from the road. The interiors often include walled gardens and fountains, and are beautifully furnished with antiques and Chinese inspired decorations. Rommanee Road is a fine example which has been fully restored. Visit Talang Road, Yaowarat Road and Dibuk Road. Nowadays, these streets in the Chinese quarter have transformed themselves into busy thoroughfares featuring antique shops, speciality restaurants and more. The Provincial Hall, the Phuket Courthouse and the town branch of the Siam City Bank are further examples of architecture from the past. All well worth a visit. 81 C5

Horse Riding If you are here with your family, horse riding is a relaxing and romantic way for you all to explore Phuket's natural scenery. In contrast, a brisk canter along the beach is most invigorating. There are two clubs on the island: Phuket International Horse Club, easily spotted at the entrance to Laguna Resort, is open seven days a week from 8am until 6pm. Phuket Riding Club is located in the southern part of the island on the road to Rawai Beach, and offers riding tuition for all levels of ability including children. The Club is open daily from 7am until 6.30pm. Our 39ft Catamaran “DaVinci” is named after our iconic Italian restaurant in the south of Phuket Island. Mama Noodles are indispensable for that tangy, piquant reminder of Thai cuisine and come in several flavours including shrimp, chicken, and pork. Simply add boiling water and voila! You’re instantly back in Thailand with no annoying waiters sniggering at your purple sweating face as you plough through a nuclear-hot bowl of noodles. Mama Noodles are even celebrated in song at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=jj_b8DGMQBg. Another Thai snack isBig Sheet (Toe Kae Noi) – and no it’s not a laxative – it’s delicious dried seaweed packed with vitamins. And please note: Big Sheet is not for sale in Mexico for obvious reasons. Taro packets feature slightly-spiced dried fish slices, a great companion to an ice-cold beer. The great thing about these snacks is that they’re all both cheap and lightweight so they’re ideal packing fodder.
Thai balm cures everything: At least that’s what the locals claim and accordingly slap it on liberally for sore joints, muscle pain and even headaches. It’s a herbal pain relief that really is quite effective but do wash your hands after use if you need the bathroom. It’s not often you’ll find whitening cream in the west and you’re even less likely to stumble across whitening deodorant, no less, but does it actually make you go white? Of course not, but it sort of smells nice. Prickly heat powder is popular with Thai ladies of a certain age who cake their faces with it, come the evening. For wackiness you could hardly beat it as the effect feels like spreading spearmint toothpaste over your skin: it’s a must-have item. Cost? Varying, but no more than 100 baht.
Cost? Five-to 20 baht at most supermarkets.

In many ways Thailand is unique. The kingdom’s take on culture, customs, food, dressing, and handling a vehicle weighing over 15 kilos is sometimes quirky and often downright bizarre. Yet in a country that boasts its very own monkey hospital you shouldn’t be surprised to find that light switches are fitted upside down, the ground floor is really the first floor, and insects and grubs are considered delicious snack food. This is what makes Thailand lovable – its seeming wackiness. So here are some real Thai accessories to take home from your Thai trip.
Consider the humble sarong. After all, it’s just a rectangular piece of woven cloth yet it has so many uses that folks, once they’ve had a couple of sarongs, find that they can’t live without them. The first and most obvious use for a sarong is as a towel – in the in the tropics that is – a sarong isn’t much use in a northern municipal swimming pool except as a means of broadcasting, “HEY, LOOK! I’VE BEEN TO THAILAND!” Its uses are many, stretching from a baby cot to a sweatband/turban, a mop, a tablecloth, a water filter, a sun shelter, a dish dryer, curtains, tourniquet, an instrument of torture, and more. The mind boggles… Cost? About 100 + baht at a local market.

An old joke runs that a tourist entered a tailor’s shop in Bangkok some years ago and said, “I’d like a suit with one arm shorter than the other, the trouser seams coming apart and with sealed jacket pockets.” The tailor was aghast and said, “But we couldn’t possibly do that for you, Sir,” “Why not? You did it last time I was here,” the tourist rasped back. But honestly, when it comes to bespoke tailoring, bargains are there for the taking if you apply the simple logic of, ‘give it time’. Never ever rush the tailoring process otherwise you may end up like the above punter. Surprisingly, standards are high, despite annoying tailor touts who have simply amazing abilities to mimic Melbourne, and even Cockney accents. Ignore them. Go talk to The Big Boss. Schedule your fittings to plan a complete job at least two days before your departure date. Cost? Around 3,000 baht for a suit if your bargaining skills are honed well. And do bargain hard.
The Chinese had silk sewn up as a monopoly hundreds of years ago, simply because no one else knew how to craft this marvelous fabric. Thailand for a while soon cottoned on – forgive me – but it took the intervention of an American ex-espionage operator (I swear I’m not making this up) named Jim Thompson to resurrect the fading Thai silk industry of some 70 years ago. Nowadays in Phuket, there are several excellent high-quality Jim Thompson outlets including in Central Phuket Festival and on a nearby Chao Fa Road branches but frankly… they’re stylish but rather expensive. So why not check out the parallel Thalang and Dibuk roads in Phuket Town where you can rifle through shop after shop selling a whole gamut of textiles? There you’ll find silk, batik, cotton sarongs, and highly decorative cloths. Cost? Not very much at all.
In summary, you can take a lot of ‘Thainess’ home with you: Thai-music CDs, miniature elephants; Thai fold-out cushions; beer singlets for the Bogan/Chav in you, and much more. But do watch out for the gem scams – they’re the biggest source of tourist complaints in the kingdom.

Tell us about yourself, Rebecca: Where are you from? I’m originally from Singapore and moved to Phuket about seven years ago.
Ingredients for serving four portions
Seared-baked beef tenderloin
880gm beef tenderloin, trimmed 280gm potato gnocchi, boiled (available at most large supermarkets) 12 small tomatoes 240gm spinach leaves, boiled and chopped 100cc whipping cream
Take beef tenderloin marinated with salt and pepper. Turn on the oven. At the same time add oil and butter to frying pan at high heat. Sear the beef on both sides till crispy brown in the frying pan. Adjust the oven temperature to your preference. This recipe is for medium rare.
120gm blue cheese, crumbled 60gm parmesan cheese, grated 6tbsp veal jus 10gm garlic, chopped 20gm chopped onions Salt and white pepper to taste A splash of wine
Baked tomato with spinach
Potato gnocchi in blue cheese sauce 1. In a medium skillet, add whipping cream, cheese, garlic, wine over a low heat 2. Stir frequently until cheese melts. 3. Add potato and gnocchi. Stir well, finish with parmesan grated seasoning to taste with salt and pepper 4. Remove from heat and keep warm
1. Sautee onions and garlic in butter. Add spinach then chicken stock and whipping cream. Fry till liquids have evaporated then season with salt and pepper 2. You speak pretty good Thai. Did you study it? Not really. I learned through friends and people I work with. Still, I’m kind of lazy and I forget words because I don’t use them often enough. How long has the wakepark been open? We secured this lake in September 2012. It took us about three months to build this first clockwise wakepark in Asia. Anthem opened its door to the public on 26 January 2013. We realised that many wakeparks in the world weren’t based on fun and friendliness and we wanted that element here. At many wakeboard venues, you need to know how to wakeboard first before you get to make friends, but here we make friends first then we teach you how to wakeboard. How many teachers do you have? All the cable operators and management staff members are wakeboarders-cum-teachers. There are eight teachers and most of our Thai staff speak English. I can speak Mandarin and Cantonese. If we get people from, say, Russia we can get some of our wakeboarding friends here to help translate. What about the location? Did you look around a lot at disused tin mines? It took a bit of investigative work and the help of Google Maps to locate this beautiful lake. We also had to ask the residents around here to help locate the owner. Many cablepark venues are far out of a city; they’d have to dig a lake to get set up but we were lucky to secure a fresh water ready-made lake left behind by exhausted tin mining. The additional perks are that our wakepark is so close to four of the most beautiful white sandy beaches, a wide selection of dining outlets and so many convenience stores, pharmacies and supermarkets. Everything is within 10 minutes reach, but when we first did our survey here, it was a complete forest and there was only one entrance / exit through our neighbour’s house. Do many Thai people come here? More and more. A lot of locals pass through and many Thai families come to wakeboard. We also see quite a few young Thai ladies here, which is unusual as the younger generation wants to be white and you’d think that this is something that they’d avoid at all costs; but they do come because they’re attracted by seeing little seven-yearold Munchkins wakeboarding and figure how hard can it be if these little ones can do that?
Is there a particular sort of person who likes wakeboarding? Oh I think it’s across the board. Generally people who like the thrill and spill of adrenalin-fueled sports like kite boarding, snowboarding, skate boarding. When we visited wakeboard parks, we noticed a niche of people aged between 20-40, but when we opened our park a lot of kids from the local international schools came – and then their parents joined them. We also discovered a lot of new talent from kids and adults who have never stepped on any kind of board before. With proper coaching, anyone can learn to wakeboard and be proficient in it. Some people say, “Oh, I’m too old for that,” but one of our oldest students was a 74-year-old grandfather! He figured he was on vacation and so was up for anything. Also, people are much better read and travelled than in the past; they like to research and plan things to do and learn during their holidays. Many individuals, couples and families when on vacation want to experience and learn something new. We see many new faces here. This sport is growing very quickly all over the world. It's easy to pick up wakeboarding but it's not easy to be very good at it as you need loads of courage and determination to master the high risk aerial tricks. Nevertheless, it's enjoyable just hanging out at the wakepark to watch the riders perform on the water. Wakeboarding is a lifestyle and our wakepark is the community centre. Can someone walk in here empty handed or do they have to have a board? As a beginner, we will provide all the basic equipment, safety vest and helmet so you can just walk in empty handed. All you have to do is purchase a riding pass. However, we provide coaching for intermediate and advanced levels riders so these riders will likely have their own equipment. We have a pro shop and have a full range of the latest wakeboards, bindings, helmets and life vests; when people become hooked after trying it a couple of times, they usually want to purchase their own gear. How do you evaluate success? I think success is when you are content with what you have and you find joy in everything you do. You don’t have to be the richest person but you do have to own a wealth of knowledge about how the universe works and how you can relate to it. Being able to share your accumulated wisdom and have people looking up to and wanting to be like you will be the ultimate endorsement.

Hua Beach
Hua Beach, some two kilometres up the "Millionaires’ Mile" in Kamala, might well have been the last truly secret beach on Phuket. But since a small handmade sign was posted at its entrance, the secret’s out. The 300-metre lane leading to the beach takes you through a lush landscape with thick trees arching over the road, ending at a small car park area next to a basic restaurant. Tall casuarina and palm trees line the beach, reaching out over Hua’s golden sand.

Next to the restaurant is a concrete foundation that looks like it’s been long abandoned to the jungle – someone’s dream tropical villa that didn’t quite come to fruition perhaps. Aside from the restaurant, some bundles of fishing nets and a few plastic dinghy boats scattered about, there’s nothing here but sand and sea. If you time it right you might have this beach all to yourself, aside from the resident kittens racing across the sand.
As many visiting holidaymakers know, Phuket is an island blessed with some big beaches. The kilometres-long stretches of tropical west-coast beaches, including Patong, Kata, Karon and Kamala, are famous around the world and their sands have been trodden by millions of bare feet.
Laemka Beach
Though few undiscovered places remain in Phuket, there are plenty of smaller, more remote beaches offering barefoot travellers some peaceful and picturesque escapes. Here are some of our favourites.

Less than one kilometre north of Rawai Beach, Laemka has long been a popular haunt for locals looking for a scenic picnic spot, but it’s often overlooked by tourists. Arriving to Laemka’s main beach at the end of Soi Laemka Yai, there’s a rather spooky sense of dereliction. On the beachfront sits a restaurant long since shut down and there are some empty, decaying bungalows up the hillside. The beach itself, however, is a fine patch of sandand a great family escape. The tiny bay is shallow and safe for swimming. There are some annoyances here (namely boats motoring to shore a bit too close to swimmers and uncollected trash in places), but on balance an afternoon spent at Laemka is sure to soothe the senses.
NOTE: In recent months the Thai government has been going through a process of re-beautifying the island's beaches. This has been a somewhat haphazard procedure, the main objective being to get rid of beach vendors, toes-in-the-sand restaurants, sunbeds and umbrellas. You may find all or some of the above at one or more of the beaches described here. Or you may not... Best to go self-sufficient!
Ao Sane
Yanui
Ao Sane rates as the beach with the most bizarre access point in Phuket. Getting here first requires cutting through the covered car park at the Phuket Yacht Club hotel in Nai Harn, then taking a well-paved but very narrow lane for a kilometre or so. With a scattering of broken coral, Ao Sane’s sand is not quite as fine as nearby Nai Harn’s, but the scene is quaint and tranquil and the snorkelling’s good around the rocks just offshore. The beach itself is strewn with large boulders, giving it a more rugged, wild appearance. Those wishing to linger a while longer may dine at the Ao Sane restaurant, or even rent a bungalow here or at Baan Krating resort a bit further along, across a rickety bridge.

Just across Nai Harn Bay from Ao Sane, between Nai Harn and Rawai beaches along the coastal road, sits the tiny Ya Nui bay. Not exactly a hidden spot, it can get crowded through the sunny season with rows of rental chairs full of sunbathers. Even on its busiest days, however, the beach is a breathtaking sight with its silken sands and dramatic surrounding landscape including a rocky cape jutting out from its centre and a lush green hill topped by a wind turbine rising up steeply from one end. When viewing Ya Nui from the wind turbine lookout point, it looks as perfect as a well-cut emerald gem.

An ideal spot for early risers to catch the sunrise, found on Cape Panwa on Phuket’s east coast. Like most of the east coast, Ao Yon retains a distinctly local feel and only a small fraction of Phuket’s millions of tourists will ever come here or know about it. Due to the pearl farm activities in the bay, the water is not always so clear, but at high tide it’s possible to take a refreshing dip in the sea. Our favourite Ao Yon dining spot is the Secret Cove, where parents can enjoy a relaxed lunch and drinks while the kids frolic safely in the shallow, protected bay. Families could also walk down the beach and stop by Topper Sail to arrange a dinghy sailing lesson, a fantastic way to introduce the young ones to the sport of sailing.

SONGKRAN IN PHUKET Increasingly, urban Thais have come to celebrate the holiday in a frenzy of water-throwing. Nobody is immune. One of my fondest memories of Songkran is of an immaculately uniformed policeman (they’re normally very much on their dignity) smiling goodnaturedly as he paused to empty water from his highly polished boots. Unfortunately these high jinks can get out of hand. Motorised gangs equipped with high pressure water cannons, iced water and lots of enthusiasm, would get each other (and anybody else) wet, in running battles through the streets. Unfortunately, speeding traffic, wet roads and alcoholic bravado make for a dangerous cocktail. In the recent past the holidays have been marred by tragic loss of life and injury. Inevitably the authorities have had to move in to safeguard people. Thailand’s New Year celebration is a wet and wild event throughout the country, but the Phuket version is the most international and perhaps the most boisterous of all. Tourists, expats and Thais alike arm themselves to the teeth with water guns, powder and buckets and let loose for three days of heavy dousing

No visitor who has ever been here during the month of April can have avoided coming into contact with the enchanting, hilarious, and occasionally exasperating and downright dangerous watery explosion of public celebration which is Songkran. Thailand's most celebrated festival is Songkran – the Thai new year. It starts on April 13 and lasts for between three and ten days, depending on where you’re resident. For most, it’s lots of fun and an excuse to cool off at what is usually the hottest time of the year. However, there’s a deeper significance to Songkran which is rooted in our history and in our beliefs. Allow us to tell you about this. Perhaps it will enhance your enjoyment of the event. The word Songkran is from the Sanskrit ‘Sangkranti’, which means ‘to move upwards’ or ‘to be about to change’. On the eve of the festival, Thais spring clean their homes, symbolically expelling any bad luck from the old year and prepare for good fortune in the new. Food and other contributions are offered to

the monks at the temple early on the morning of the 13th, after which there are ceremonial prayers. Water is also poured on the ground, or on the roots of an ancient tree, symbolising a blessing to ancestors. Thais who have moved from their home towns always try to return to their families for Songkran and all forms of transport are booked solid. For this reason you should try to avoid travelling before, during or immediately after the holiday, particularly by bus or train. In many towns and villages, a Buddha image is carried in a procession through the streets and people sprinkle water upon it, to show their respect. In the southern provinces, village elders are invited to the temple and young people splash water on their heads, signaling their blessings of health and long life. The elders respond by wishing the young, vigour, wealth and happiness. In another delightful custom, Thais visit their elderly relatives bringing them new clothes for the coming year.
(and, it must be said, some heavy drinking too). Water battles take place along all the main roads throughout the island, and pick-up trucks turn into roving waterwar vehicles overloaded with people who splash everyone they pass by as they cruise the soggy streets. Patong is host to the most frenzied Songkran celebrations, while Phuket City comes in at a close second. In addition to days of street parties, there are a number of traditional activities to join as well. At the time of writing the full schedule of events had not yet been finalised, but confirmed activities include a merit-making ceremony at Queen Sirikit park in Phuket City on the morning of April 13 and festivities at Saphan Hin park on each day of Songkran from 9am to 6pm. More sacred aspects of the festival that can be seen around the island include
processions of Buddha images and ceremonies to pay homage to elders with scented lustral water. Forget about getting anywhere on these days without getting soaked, especially if you’re on a motorbike. And no one’s immune to a drenching, not even officials on duty. There really is no way of avoiding a soaking, unless you stay in your hotel. Our advice is, ‘If you can’t beat them, join them.’ Don’t forget to put wallets, mobile 'phones, cigarettes, lighters etc in a plastic bag.

Staying out of legal trouble in Thailand
You made the right decision for a number of reasons. Prostitution is illegal in Thailand although enforcement is often criticised by media and other organisations as not being up to scratch. The relevant legislation spans the Prostitution Act of 1966, the Penal Code amended in 2003 and the Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act 1996.
ooks on experiences in Thai jails, being busted for heroin trafficking, falling madly in love with a girl who can barely speak English and who requires payment for affection, ‘how to buy land in Thailand’, ‘how to do business in Thailand’ and related matters pepper the shelves at airport bookstores. In addition, there are travel blogs on Thailand, online and printed newspapers and journals focusing sometimes on the more negative aspects of life or visitation to this beautiful Kingdom.
Essentially, the summary of these laws is that sexual gratification in exchange for money or another benefit comprises prostitution. However, it should be noted that the fines for solicitation are very low, and furthermore there is some old law relating to ‘open and shameless manner’ which also contributes to a disinterest in enforcement.

It should further be noted that in an increasing number of jurisdictions, prostitution is being legalised. This is in stark contrast to Thailand, which many foreigners do not realise is as conservative as it actually is.
The volume of information, perhaps more pertinently ‘misinformation’ ,is so staggering that I could almost write a book on the subject. Instead, I have written this mini-article to clear up some of the common issues that visitors and residents may face, the answers to which contain a few tips for staying out of trouble in Thailand. I see a lot of people driving around on motorbikes, practicing stunts on one wheel, driving the wrong way along roads and along the few pavements, racing each other to Saphan Hin, and gathering in groups of more than five outside 7-Eleven, Family Mart and Supercheap stores. Is that legal, and is it OK if I do it? No! s.148 of the Land Traffic Act 1979 requires everyone riding a motorbike to wear a helmet. The law has been in place for 36 years ! s.152 of the Land Traffic Act imposes fines for exceeding the speed limit under which the maximum fine is 1,000 baht (the cost of an inexpensive bottle of wine from a nice supermarket), so drive slowly. Gathering in groups of more than five is illegal in Thailand as martial law is still in place following the military coup, and installation of the National Council for Peace and Order, in May 2014. It is therefore not legal to gather in gangs on motorbikes outside convenience stores whilst others try to access the store, sometimes late at night, to buy convenience goods. Someone told me that they bought some land in Thailand, and then I read that foreigners can’t own land. I've seen a lot of ‘Land for Sale’ signs around Phuket written in English, but couldn’t work out why the signs were in English if only Thais can buy land. Should I telephone one of these numbers to find out if the seller will help me buy their land? Generally the seller of land is unconcerned as to how a buyer buys the land provided that he or she receives the correct amount of monies on the completion date. They may even take a deposit and then expect you to work out how you can, or in fact cannot, ‘buy land’. Unless you are a property developer in partnership with Thai persons and developing property, hotels or other facilities on land – or planning to qualify for a special permission to acquire land under the 40 million Thai Baht investment programme – then these signs are of no value to you. They may be very big signs, but they don’t change the law through their sheer size. Is it legal for me to take a backpack to the beach? The beaches of Thailand are generally public land. Personal possessions may be taken to and from public land. It is possible for their to be legal restrictions on commercial activities on public land including beaches. However, please note that laws cannot be invented by government officials and authorities, or the police, who are there to supervise existing laws and prevent crimes, not to regulate personal items carried by innocent visitors to public land. It is legal for the authorities to organise beaches into orderly areas, but ‘crimes’ are not created by anything other than enactment of law through the correct legal processes. If you ever find yourself being stopped by a police officer and you know you have not committed a crime, then you should take note of the officer’s

I understand there are new regulations about the use of beaches in Phuket. I saw there are lots of Jet Skis using the beach for commercial purposes. Why does that appear to be allowed, but commercial activities and even non-commercial activities are being restricted? Unfortunately, I don’t know the answer to that question. identification, and consult a Thai lawyer for immediate assistance. Do not permit an illegal search or detention but be careful not to resist legitimate enquiry. I feel sorry for all the stray dogs wandering around unsupervised and in mangy condition on the roads and lanes in Phuket. I would like to gather around 20 of these innocent mongrels and keep them in my garden. I realise they might irritate my neighbours (who have three young children) by constant barking and other noise, but then I don’t like children – I didn’t even like me when I was a child – and I love dogs more than people. Is it legal to keep my 20 stray dogs in my garden? On 27 December 2014 the Prevention of Animal Cruelty and Provision of Animal Welfare Act was enacted. This law aims to prevent cruelty to animals and to allow prosecutions for those who are cruel to animals. The issue, of course, with all laws is whether they are enforced properly, uniformly and in a just manner or not. For those that intervene personally and attempt to take care of animals to protect them from cruelty, this is permissible but subject also to law, rules and regulations.

If you live in a condominium, the rules and regulations my stipulate that dogs and/or pets are not allowed. If you live in an estate under which there are rules about the common area and gardens, pets may not be allowed in such areas, but in your private area only, such as your own garden. If your dogs make too much noise your neighbour can complain to the police who may visit your property and ask you to reduce the noise. In Thailand, there are rules on noise pollution which you can see (in Thai only) at the Pollution Control Department’s website.

So, you may keep 20 dogs in your garden, provided they are only pets and you are not illegally operating a dog shelter, for which you would need a license/permit. The onus would be on you to prove this, if you were to be investigated. Animal welfare organisations, for example, must be registered and licensed. I was playing pool in a small bar near the apartment I rent and a lady approached me and asked to play pool with me. We enjoyed our game and she won as she seemed to have a lot of experience. Later on in the evening, a friend of this lady told me that I could ‘go home’ with this professional pool player, but I would have to pay some money to do so. I have never experienced this type of proposition before and I declined in any event. However, if this is what I think it is, is prostitution legal in Thailand? Was I foolish for turning down this offer?

Finally some good news for commuters in Phuket! We may at long last get a light rail mass transit system to call our own. There’s a lack of reliable public transport here, so getting around Phuket can be most inconvenient and very expensive. This forces everyone – local residents and tourists alike – to seek a cheaper alternative of transport which is usually a motorcycle. Yet accidents involving motorcycles on the island are an everyday event and it doesn’t help to know that Thailand is one of the most dangerous countries in the world to drive in. So even though construction of the transit system is only expected to begin in 2021 which is a good six years away – and probably another three years after that to actually be able to ride on the train – just the thought that we could get around the island without the dangerous driving sometime in the future is a dream. The track will start at the Sarasin Bridge in Phang Nga
The train track will begin across the Sarasin Bridge in Phang Nga and have 20 stations along its 60km track with stops at Phuket International Airport, Heroines’ Monument, Koh Kaew, Phuket bus terminal, Phuket old town, along with other stops. What will be most interesting to see is how much land prices will increase (and how fast, too) along the proposed 60km track through the island. For example, land plots close to the BTS stations like Siam, Ploenchit and Chidlom in Bangkok were valued at 1.65 million baht per wah (two metres square) in 2014. This was an average increase of around 4.6% compared to the prices in 2012 with an annual increase of approximately 4%. Of course Phuket may not see such prices for a while but with the imminent arrival of the mass transit system it may one day have similar land prices as Bangkok.
No doubt there are some savvy people out there already buying up land plots along the projected light rail track. And we will also no doubt see the mushrooming of shops, condominiums, malls and housing projects

along the track – almost a mirror image of Bangkok. Those with existing property along, or close to the track will also see the value of their assets increase at a faster rate than normal. Properties and land within a 50-200-metre radius from the track will also benefit from the light rail mass transit system. At the latest and final public hearing on the 6th of January 2015, Phuket’s Governor Nisit Jansomwonong announced that the light rail plans are 90% complete with certain adjustments to be made. The plans will then have to pass an Environmental Impact Assessment test after which it would seek the cabinet’s approval, estimated to take another year. The hearing also discussed the much-needed requirements for parking spaces close to the stations. If the scheme makes it to the cabinet by next year and wins approval (as well as the necessary financial banking support without a new government ‘shooting’ the project down) we could be a little closer to the reality of a mass transit system on our beautiful island.
