In 1958, Yves Saint Laurent (Pierre Niney) – aged merely 21 – was unexpectedly called upon to oversee the legendary Paris fashion house established by recently deceased Christian Dior. All eyes turned to this very young assistant as he presented his first collection for Dior and instantly ascended to the heights of haute couture’s elite class. ‘Saint Laurent’ is at once a captivating story about the making of an icon and a testament to the power of enduring love.

Capable of unspeakable evil, the actual doll exists locked up in an occult museum in Connecticut – visited only by a priest who blesses her twice a month. We all know one of those places… they never advertise but they’re busy. Why? ‘Word of mouth’. People tell their friends, “You must try..” and the word spreads. In this monthly column, we spread the word further about the great-value nooks and crannies that we know about on Phuket.
Roti Chaofa
81 A6
6am-noon. Chao-Fa Rd. East, next to SCB Bank, 300m from Jee Teng Intersection. Roti Chaofa has been open for more than 30 years, serving the Roti Namkang (Muslim pan-fried bread with a small bowl of curry made with your choice of chicken, beef or lamb) + a fried egg. Cost around 50 baht. Rotis Mataba, which have many ingredients folded into the middle, are something you should not miss too.
The Book Café
123 B3
8:30am-5pm. On the road towards Nai Harn, there's a 3-way junction. Turn left, to Soi Suanwat, pass the Pineapple Apartments and the Book Café is on the right side. A very easy and relaxing little café offering a wide selection of used books. Serving fresh coffee, herbal teas, fresh 'Naked' Smoothies and fresh homemade juices and snacks. Their carrot cake is not disappointing. Organic health products available here too.
Khanom Jeen Mae Ting (Rice noodles)
81 D5
5.30am-11am. On Satun Rd. at the entrance to Pavillion Hotel. One of the most popular breakfast choices among Phuketians is Khanom Jeen. My favourite Khanom Jeen restaurant is 'Mae Ting'. Operating with a self-service concept, you can pick up plates of rice noodles at the counter and help yourself to various choices of curry such as Beef Curry (Gaeng Nua), Chicken Curry (Gaeng Kai), Fish Curry (Nam Ya Pla), Crab Curry (Gaeng Poo) and more... A variety of vegetable dishes are also available.
In love Ice Cream
81 A6
Noon-8pm. From Jee Teng intersection heading toward Naka, turn left at the Mr. Com intersection, close to Andaman Badminton Court. A tiny cosy ice cream shop with a couple of tables. Most of their sorbets are made from tropical Thai fruit with various toppings. Two scoops with one topping is 35 baht, two toppings 39 baht and three toppings just 49 baht. Cheap and very tasty. A must try for ice cream lovers.
Keawjai Bakery & Restaurant
81 B4
7am-4pm. On Phang Nga Rd. just west of the old bus station. One of the longtime favourite restaurants among Phuket locals. Not a huge restaurant but has indoor & outdoor dining areas. Enjoy a selection of Thai & Thai-Chinese food as well as homemade bakery products. Recommendated dishes are fried chicken with garlic & stir-fried vegetables. A few of Phuket's traditional desserts & snacks are also available. Reasonable prices & fast service!

Explore the Andaman Sea, one of the most beautiful yachting grounds in the world Andaman Cruises is a synonym for "Phuket‘s Most Exciting & Stylish Contemporary Luxury Yachts" and the leading luxury yacht charter company on the island. The fleet includes seven vessels in total: the flagship MY Olympia 76, a 23-metre fly-bridge motor yacht for up to 20 guests, or the MY Mayavee 60, a 19-metre motor yacht of the renowned English family of Princess, for example. Due to the top standard of the yachts as well as the outstanding service onboard, Andaman Cruises is highly appreciated by international stars such as football player Cristiano Ronaldo, UEFA President Michel Platini, the German top model Heidi Klum and Hollywood actor Dolph Lundgren. In addition to the private luxury charters the company is also focused on yacht incentives. Among the corporate clients are BMW and Panasonic for instance. Andaman Cruises hosted their management incentives onboard the yachts. “Our company stands for luxury
experiences, lifestyle and premium hospitality. Today, people of all nationalities come from all over the world to enjoy the peaceful and pristine waters of Phuket and the Andaman Sea,” says General Manager Christian Schwind. The archipelagos of the Andaman Sea and its maritime national parks are renowned as some of the most beautiful yachting grounds in the world. Many people say that there is no better experience than to go onboard a yacht and see the breathtaking scenery of limestone rocks, white sand beaches and crystal clear waters around Phuket and the South of Thailand, including Phang Nga Bay and the coastline of Krabi. Guests are able to discover unique destinations and unspoiled spots. And a luxury charter with Andaman Cruises is the most exclusive and most personalised way to do that. These yachts offer all the benefits and facilities of a floating villa – luxury, comfort and privacy.

THE FUTURE OF PAUL ROPP SHOPPING
THE FUTURE OF PAUL ROPP SHOPPING
Paul Ropp wants to create an arena in which clients are free to collaborate directly with him and his team for their most desired ‘fantasy’ styles
Paul Ropp has a specific vision for the future; a vision in which his clients will be able to bypass the need for store visits all together. This system will not only make Paul Ropp items more accessible to clients but it will also be a direct route that replaces the need for going into stores to try on items for size and colour compatibility as clients can make specific requests regarding their own particular needs and wants right down to the smallest details. Although a Paul Ropp online store already exists, this new idea will be revolution in itself. Paul Ropp wants to create an arena in which clients are free to collaborate directly with him and his team for their most desired ‘fantasy’ styles, ranging from the past, to the present, and bringing them into the future. Clients will literally

be able to create the styles they want from home and present them to Paul Ropp online for the item to be tailor made and perfectly suited to their request. They will be able to give their measurements, choose their fabrics, their styles, and deliver the wishes of their preferred look into the hands of the trusted Paul Ropp team – who will create a one-of-a-kind piece made uniquely for that client. This formula is consistent with the manner in which the company operates in that it delivers new, fresh, and unique items. Through the Paul Ropp website paulropp.com, buyers will be able to have their very own direct line to the Paul Ropp team, no matter where they are in the world. And that’s not all; every item created and ordered will be shipped to the client free of charge.

HOT LIST - NATAI BEACH
HOT LIST - NATAI BEACH
Aleenta food dessert
Welcome to the Phuket Hot List, your window into the newest and most spectacular places on and off the island. This month, we venture over the bridge to Phang Nga Province to explore the long, luxurious shoreline of Natai Beach.
Though Natai Beach may at first glance seem a sleepy seaside village, its dining scene is anything but, with some exciting menus emerging from both Aleenta Resort and Iniala Beach House. Iniala has brought in three-star Michelin Spanish chef Eneko Atxa to take charge of Aziamendi restaurant, resulting in a selection of tasting menus brimming with artful and inventive dishes. The restaurant reopens this November following Chef Eneko’s ‘100 Days in Malta’ trip that has brought a Mediterranean slant to Aziamendi’s fare.
Natai Beach may have been quietly developing as a luxury underthe-radar enclave for a number of years, but the opening of Iniala Beach House in late 2013 finally brought its golden sands to a glittering global debut. Within mere months of opening, the 10room boutique resort earned a spot on the ‘hot list’ of Conde Nast Traveller magazine plus a high-profile stay by the entire Kardashian family; the American reality TV stars and paparazzi darlings certainly raised its image. Iniala commissioned 10 top designers to each execute their visions of beachside luxury in different rooms. Highlights include a sumptuously designed cinema room and colourful kids’ hotel facilities clearly inspired by such children’s dreams as exploring an enchanted forest or sailing a pirate ship. Iniala is an assuredly glamorous place, but it’s also generous, with 10% of all of its revenues going to the Inspirasia Foundation, a grant-funding philanthropic organisation that supports several projects around Asia. Also this August, it launched a campaign where 100% of revenues earned during the month would be donated to charitable causes.
With its spa, fitness centre and healthy menu, Aleenta is sure to attract those seeking a wellness and renewal retreat, having already built its reputation as a romantic honeymoon and wedding escape destination. Aleenta is also set to double its room offerings with construction underway on 44 new one-bedroom pavilions, each with a private pool, on a land plot across the road.
The luxury Aleenta Phuket-Phang Nga Resort, meanwhile, has just completed an extensive makeover that adds a large sea-view pool with underwater ‘starlights’, a kids’ club, fitness centre, a boutique, and one of the most delightful and daring spas we’ve ever seen. Ayurah Spa features eight treatment rooms including a dreamy relaxation room with deluxe leather lounge chairs set around a large cylindrical jellyfish aquarium.
A new resort on the Natai scene is Le Coral Hideaway Beyond, which will celebrate its grand opening this October. The 58-suite resort is set on the banks of a lagoon, just metres away from the beach, with a long swimming pool stretching across the front and spa featuring three treatment rooms. Among the nautically-themed rooms is the snazzy Prestige Pool Suite, which enjoys a separate living area and private sea-view pool.

Sava - Tievoli Villa
Jivana - Shanti Villa
Iniala - Siam B Bathroom A
Just up the road sits the Jivana Villa Estate with three grand six-bedroom villas set on enormous beachfront lots: Shanti, Jia and Ananda. Like the Sava villas, these are rented out to holidaymakers and feature their own in-house staff including a villa manager, personal chef and a concierge service. The black-tile swimming pools fronting each villa add dramatic panache to the lush tropical setting.
Not everyone has the desire or funds to stay in a splashy villa or resort, and now with the opening of CFun Cottages, more budgetminded travellers may rest their heads near the golden sands of Natai. Set a short walk away from the beach on the east side of the coastal road, CFun’s air-con and fan bungalows have rustic-style thatched roofs, and there’s a swimming pool, too. With prices at only about 1,000 baht a night, CFun is sure to be the bargain darling for Natai … for the next little while at least.

Phuket’s headlands and hills are sprinkled with many private luxury villas, but here at Natai Beach, those looking to retreat to a tropical dream home can easily find one that sits right on the beach. We’ve visited a number of villas in Natai, and found two estates that have exceptional charm and design flair. Sava Villas is a collection of seven villas, five of which sit on large beachfront lots. Designed by the award-winning Original Vision architects, these villas have a cool, open, and modern style. The villas’ long, white peak-roofed pavilions extending towards the sea evoke the feeling of a luxury yacht ready to set sail. All seven of these villas, ranging in size from four to six bedrooms, are available as holiday rentals.

Meanwhile, the ebullient Chef De Cuisine Alex Bitterling at Aleenta has developed a menu at The Edge restaurant that brings out the best in Thai cuisine using fresh local products wherever possible with some creative twists. His ‘Siam Fragrance’ dessert is a surprising and simply divine adaptation of the Thai classic mango and sticky rice dish.

CENTARA GRAND BEACH RESORT PHUKET
CENTARA GRAND BEACH RESORT PHUKET
Darren Shaw
What changes have you seen in the market in your business sector since you started? How have you responded to them? When I first arrived I noticed a strong leaning towards European and Scandinavian tourists. This shift has moved to China and Russia. Of course we have adjusted our focus and learned to cater better to their needs. Our resorts also cater better to their language and dietary needs as well as their social preferences.
Darren Shaw, Area General Manager of Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket and Centara Villas Phuket
Is Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket involved in any CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) programmes? If so, please outline briefly. Centara is very active in our CSR program. From beach clean ups, to orphanage visits or to fundraise for a good cause. We are also Earthcheck Silver and Greenleaf qualified.
How long have you been with Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket? What’s your position and what attracted you to the job? I’ve enjoyed working with Centara Hotels and Resorts for close to three years. I joined Centara Karon Resort after managing a resort in Laguna Phuket. In December 2013 I moved across to Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket as Area General Manager. During my early stages of living in Thailand, I followed the progress of Centara Hotels and Resorts through the media and it was evident it was a company that was growing rapidly. What were you doing / where were you living & working before? Prior to arriving in Phuket, my family and I were living on the Coral Coast of the Fiji Islands. While operating as General Manager for a beautiful five-star island resort, my family grew from three to four members. We enjoyed three and half years in this majestic location. Where are you from? What is your hometown? I was born in Melbourne, however spent most of my adult life on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. What’s special / different about Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket? What are its unique points? Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket draws its design theme from the classic Sino-Portuguese architecture that characterises Phuket Town. Our resort is set directly on the sands at Karon Beach, backed by a green hill, and grouped around its own water park. The resort offers a memorable holiday experience for everyone: couples and families will love the exhilarating leisure activities, the water sports, and of course the water park. Accommodation offers a comforting and relaxing ambience for all and for guests preferring seclusion the villas provide exclusivity along with great views, and come with the ‘club category’ benefits. The award-winning SPA Cenvaree is a luxurious treat and has suites for singles and couples. Tell us something about your role in the business? As Area General Manager my day-to-day role is to directly manage the resort as well as oversee Centara Villas Phuket and our commercial bakery and laundry as well as our staff accommodation in Chalong.
Please give us an overview of your typical day ‘at work’. How do you schedule your time? Every morning at 8:30 we have a daily operations meeting attended by our key managers from sales, front office, housekeeping, food and beverage, spa and property operations.
What are the main challenges as they relate to your role? To continue to ride the fluctuations of the tourism industry by ensuring we remain one step ahead. By doing this we hope that our low periods are not too low and our high periods are fully capitalised on. …and what are the biggest difficulties you have to overcome? I don’t think we have challenges too big and we manage our challenges as they arise i.e. if the labour market has skill shortages then we train more, if our business levels drop we work on better offers in the marketplace.
After morning brief its email time as I attempt to sift through and prioritise the messages to help us quickly organise, plan and co-ordinate work as required. The majority of my day is spent at various times strategising and communicating with our team on sales, marketing, finance revenue management and operations planning.
Typically, I’ve got a long list of follow ups from outstanding reports, phone calls to make and return, review our forecasts and update action plans. By late afternoon it’s time for another walk to ensure we’re ready for dinner service, the theme nights are ready, the a la carte restaurant preparations in place, the club lounge is looking good, and the bars are fine tuning their preparations. Before I walk out the door I check on my offsite responsibilities such as our commercial laundry and bakery in Chalong, our centralised staff accommodation and our nearby sister resort Centara Villas Phuket. How would you describe your leadership style? First and foremost, a smart manager surrounds himself with best available, talented management team. The key elements of managing a productive team are to maintain open lines of communication and absolute transparency. I strive to keep the team highly motivated at all times and constantly work together with each team member to ensure their own growth and career development. What is your over-riding ambition at this stage in your life? It’s fairly simple; to enjoy my work, drive the business on behalf of the owner and achieved the desired results. Also to balance my work life and my personal life, spend time with my family and build a better future for us.
We either host a lunch with prospective or current suppliers / clients, local dignitaries, senior managers or have lunch with team members in our staff dining room. After lunch, it is time to check more emails and to catch up on daily correspondence.
Centara Grand Beach Resort www.centarahotelsresorts.com/cpbr
What’s your main target market? Like most resorts in Phuket we draw from the mainstream markets visiting Phuket such as the Russian, Chinese, Scandinavian and Australian markets, however we’re also very fortunate to have excellent business partners from nearby regions such as Singapore, India, Hong Kong and within Thailand that drive our business throughout the year. What’s your approach to marketing? How does advertising figure in that approach? Marketing is as important today as it has ever been. The only difference today is that it is more diverse and more complicated. The challenge for business marketing today is qualifying how measurable it is. Was your promotional campaign successful? Can you readily support this with data either way? What do you like most about what you do now? I enjoy working with a team of professionals in one of the most beautiful locations in the world. From a personal view point I love having my family share this experience with me and we thrive on a life of adventure while making a living! And what do you like least…? Quiet periods! Usually around May each year, our occupancy drops. It’s a time for performing ‘spring cleaning’ and our annual maintenance program. It’s not as exciting as high season with a full hotel of guests and plenty of buzzing activities. What do you (and the business) hope / expect to achieve within the next three-five years? Each year, our resort has improved in most aspects. I think our resort’s reputation will continue to grow internationally; hopefully our Sunday Brunch’s popularity grows in the local market. What do you see as your biggest successes to date? Our business growth, despite challenging circumstances in recent times, and improving our guest experiences by focusing more on what our customer is looking for and less on what we think they should have!

There are some restaurants that just encapsulate the word ‘romantic’ and here, with Tommy Doyle playing classics on his grand piano, the sea breeze and the delicate aromas of world-class cooking in the air, this House by the Sea is one of the most romantic places to eat in Phuket. On a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Andaman Sea, Baan Rim Pa prides itself in superb, authentic Royal Thai Cuisine, an ambience second to none and the most spectacular views on the island. One can taste the most mouth-watering tandoori kebabs in town, not to mention the variety of breads baked freshly in the tandoor or a delicious variety of prawn, chicken, mutton or vegetable biryani. Anoma Vongyai Khun Anoma, 44, is the director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in Phuket. VSET is a ‘restaurant at its extraordinary best’. VSET, pronounced ‘ViSate’, means ‘extraordinary’ in Thai. It’s the first gastronomic restaurant at Chalong pier and has a naturally-thatched roof, quaint interior and an open kitchen where you can see the talented team working on the menu. Whether you prefer indoor or outdoor seating, this intimately proportioned venue serves up delicious fare in a homey atmosphere. VSET’s creations combine established methods with local flare and creativity producing a stellar menu. Notable dishes include: Phuket lobster salad, foie gras parfait, cognac-flamed lobster bisque, Australian lamb cutlet, red snapper steak and honey-glazed pork belly. These only touch the surface, while a fine wine list adds an essential touch and a tantalizing selection of desserts rounds it all off. VSET is centered on the palate, but it’s how everything fits together that makes this a truly extraordinary place. Kan Eang, meaning "feel at ease", invites you to unwind with the soothing sounds of the sea & a stunning view of Chalong Bay. Savour freshly caught seafood, Thai delights & selected Japanese dishes.
Where are you from? I’m from Phuket and I came back to Phuket this year, in March. I was working in Bangkok and Tokyo – where I lived and worked for four years. And yes, I do speak a little Japanese.
Kan Eang@pier is more than a restaurant, it's a destination. Originally called Kan Eang 1, it has been preparing great seafood dishes for more than 30 years and has long been a favourite among locals and visitors from around the world. Kan Eang@pier continues the tradition of satisfying any palate with its selected fresh seafood and local specialities.
Tell us something about your work. Well, the TAT is a destination marketing organisation – we promote Thailand and interestingly enough we also promote Phuket to the domestic market – it’s a very important market. In Tokyo, obviously, I promoted Thailand to the Japanese.
Kan Eang@pier has the flexibility to cater for everything from intimate dinners to special events and large banquets. Its friendly and attentive staff and seaside seating in an idyllic setting offer a relaxing and pleasant dining experience day or night. Is the Japanese market very big? Yes, but more so in Bangkok than Phuket. In the past the Japanese were very important when it came to tourism in Thailand. Then recently they were something like the second or third biggest market when it came to overseas visitors; even last year the Japanese market was the fourth biggest for Thailand overall. What is your latest project? We have many, many projects! Next month we’re going to have a cycling event that comprises two parts. It’ll be held next door to the office in the park. We’ll have booths and a cycling workshop. Then we’re going to have a night ride in Phuket itself. The next day we’ll have another half-day ride that's separated into beginners, intermediate and advanced levels. Where do you live in Phuket? In Chalong, in my family’s house; a few of my family members don’t live here anymore. Even though we were born here some of us have chosen to move away. My mum lives in Bangkok nowadays, but they still come to visit us from time to time. What kind of car do you drive and why? To be honest, I don’t own one. I sold it when I moved away to Tokyo.
South Phuket's premier beach-side bar & restaurant, Nikita's at Rawai, is a real favourite. The absolute seafront, garden-sala café-bar with fantastic island views across Chalong Bay, a shady setting & cool sea breeze is unbeatable for relaxing away balmy afternoons & evenings.
New, chic, Cape Sienna Hotel & Villas, brings sophisticated style to the tropical beauty of Phuket with its two unique dining venues − both with outstanding service, fine cuisine & views to match. It’s chic! It’s modern! It’s hip! It’s laid-back! It’s Cape Sienna Hotel & Villas.
Time means nothing at Nikita's on peaceful Rawai Beach. The well-trained team offers real Thai hospitality, while guests sit happily daydreaming for hours, observing life on the water & chatting with friends. The extensive menu of authentic Thai food, fresh seafood & the famous wood-fired pizzas − along with a selection of over 50 quality wines, cool cocktails, icy cold beers, English draught cider, delicious fruit shakes, an excellent coffee menu and service with a smile – is a winner with visitors as well as the many locals who make Nikita's a second home.
PLUM Restaurant is 'reborn' with ‘value’ as a main item on its menu. "Back to basics" with a fresh and creative touch, featuring Mediterranean home-style & creative Thai-inspired dishes. Plum redefines value for money with over 20 wine labels under 1,400 Baht net. Fantastic views, great service complement this experience!
Dine or relax under the sala, at garden tables or outdoors by the sea. Great food, great music, great wine, great friends… Nikita’s.
Experience Cape Sienna & be surprised by the amazing location, delicious food, great drinks, good music and stunning view…

What do you like most about living in Phuket? Maybe I’m living in the past because I tend to think of answering that question relating to when I was young, living and growing up in Phuket. I still like local, simple things such as small villages and the surrounding islands, and of course I love the local food such as khanom jin (rice vermicelli) for breakfast, along with dim sum and rotis. What’s hardest or most frustrating thing about living here? I think the most difficult thing is the traffic nowadays and there’s too much construction going on. It’s getting crowded here. What do you think the future holds for you? I’ll try to do my best for the TAT because actually I like to work for ‘non-business’ concerns. I like to be a public servant to try to make the place better and I think that working in a government job does just that – serving the people rather than working for ourselves. In fact, if I could choose I’d like to have a simple life like a farmer. I’m still not sure if it’s just a dream because I have no experience in running a farm, in growing things and I know that it’s not easy. But it’s a simple life and that attracts me. Sometimes we can dream and if I’m honest I’d just like to lead a life in a small simple house.
What do you do with your free time, if you have any? Oh, ever since coming here I don’t have a lot of free time! But actually I love reading. I feel happy when I read any kind of book. Do you read in English? Sometimes, but mainly in Thai; when I read in English I don’t always finish the book I’ve bought. You've said that “Thailand’s biggest tourist draw is the kindness of Thai people” and that’s true. But sometimes visitors can't understand Thailand being a top international tourist destination yet have such poor English-speaking skills. What would you say to that? I think this problem stems from the educational process in Thailand. I know that the government tries to improve standards but in daily life we use Thai and in the past the school curriculum focused on the Thai language, so we started studying English quite late in our education. Nowadays it’s different of course, but if you start learning the grammar of another language later on it’s very difficult. What is a ‘quality tourist’? Well, number one, we look for quality rather than quantity – but quality is not just about having money to spend, although that’s obviously welcome and for many people it’s the most important thing as they need the income. No, it’s more about people coming here and respecting our laws and culture.
How do you evaluate success? Success is being happy. And I'm happy when I serve people to make this a better place.

BIG BUDDHA
BIG BUDDHA
See Phuket through the eyes of
Big Buddha This massive statue of Buddha has already become an iconic symbol of Phuket, and a must-see for tourists Approach the south end of Phuket Island from any direction and the skyline is dominated by the enormous statue of Big Buddha. Its Thai name is as splendidly large as the structure itself – Phraputthamingmongkol Eaknakakiri. The structure sits atop Nakkerd Hill which offers superb views over the surrounding area including Chalong Bay; a picture postcard feature of marine paradise.
Write your name on an artificial Bodhi leaf and attach it to a gold bell. It’s said to bring luck.
To get there from Phuket Town take the Chao Fah West road (it’s signposted for Chalong and Rawai). After about ten kilometres, you’ll pass Wat Chalong on the left. About two kilometres further on, look out for a turning on the right – there’s a big sign with an image of the statue on it. It’s pretty easy to see. The road is called Soi Sane 1, but it’s generally referred to as Soi Yodsane. It’s quite a climb but perfectly navigable for saloon cars and even small motorbikes. The road is narrow and the lower part is lined with houses and small shops. The powers-that-be have recently installed speed bumps, so it’s a good idea to take it easy. After a kilometre on the left, is Khun Dim’s, a small watering hole where the district’s cognoscenti often foregather for a sundowner... authentic local colour. Five kilometres later you’ll reach the Big Buddha car park. On the left is a large building within which are posted details about the construction progress, and there are also amulets, statuettes and other memorabilia for sale. From the car park, there’s a stiff climb up 78 steps to reach the statue itself, and it’s a pretty impressive sight. The structure is 45 metres high and sits on a base 25 metres in diameter. The podium is decorated with a large lotus flower motif. Construction is still a work-in-progress, but the scaff olding has all been removed now, and the form of the figure is clear. The views from this elevation are absolutely stunning. Clear blue skies and azure waters frame emerald-green islands, rocky promontories and silver sand beaches. It’s delightful (and maybe surprising) to see that so much of the island is still verdant forest.
Phuket Big Buddha Facts Width 25.45 metres at the base. Height 45 metres, making it 10 metres taller than Christ the in Rio de Janeiro and nearly as tall as New York’s Statue of Liberty, which is 46 metres from foot to torch. Made with Reinforced concrvete adorned with white jade Burmese arble. Daily visitors As many as 1,500 in high season.

It’s amazing to think that this huge tribute to Buddha, years in the building, has been entirely financed by voluntary funding. You can, of course, still make a contribution and become part of the blessing. For only 100 baht you’re given a small marble tablet on which you can inscribe your name and thoughts. These tiles will be incorporated within the sacred structure. It’s a wonderful concept. You can, similarly, write your name on an artificial Bodhi leaf and attach it to a gold bell. It’s said to bring luck.
Buddha's Footprint
The site also contains an image of the venerated earth goddess – Wasunthara. Next to it is an image of Phra Siwali (the name given to a venerated Buddhist monk), and a large bell weighing one ton. As part of the ritual of merit-making, devotees strike this bell. As Phuket has developed increasingly into an international destination, it has become in many respects commercialised and westernised. This is good and right – Phuket makes an enormous contribution to Thailand’s wealth and status worldwide. However, the Big Buddha statue is tangible evidence of the country’s spiritual underpinnings, and it’s fit that visitors should view the structure, not only as an amazing piece of architecture in a place of outstanding beauty, but also as a sacred shrine.

Lemongrass founder, Bobby Duchowny, studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specific herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association. Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices. “I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls. Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market. What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation offering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.
SPA & BEAUTY
To visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.
25 percent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles. “People are sensitive to different scents at different times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils. Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.” Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay and Surin Beach, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.
“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.” Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. With more salt than style, the Ao Chalong Yacht Club is a casual open-air waterfront hangout where sailors gather around the bar to trade tales and tips, yet it’s not so clubby that landlubbers seeking refreshment don't feel welcome. In fact, you're just as likely to get roped into a discussion on golf handicaps or local politics as the results of the last regatta. Handy for sea lovers, you can motor your dinghy right up to the club and tie it up to the pontoon pier or haul it ashore up the boat ramp. Service runs on tropical time so don’t expect a speedy meal – all the better for savouring those sea breezes.
Best to go: Happy hour from 5-7pm, to save an extra 10 baht on the already well-priced beer.
XANA is also the perfect venue for events of all kinds – from stylish product launches to corporate incentive events to private gatherings to weddings – and comes with the unique advantage of onsite accommodation at Angsana Laguna Phuket Hotel.

The Boathouse Wine & Grill and Re Ka Ta The first spot in Phuket to bring sophistication to the sands, The Boathouse recently emerged from an extensive makeover and is now looking poised to reel in a new generation of wining and dining globetrotters. Wine lovers, indeed, are sure to salivate over the big red menu listing more than 800 selections. With friendly wait staff helpful almost to a fault, you’re treated like royalty here – though expect to pay royal prices, too, for the French and Thai fare. The Re Ka Ta beach club, opened in late November, promises to ante up the beach chic with poolside dining and an all-new menu.

Sri Panwa’s swish Baba Poolclub was apparently not lofty or exclusive enough for some, thus Baba Nest was created to give the elite set a higher-up hideaway spot. This platform on the top of a private villa features a wraparound pool and incredible sweeping views across a south Phuket seascape. Bean-bag cushions and low round tables lend an intimate, playful air. Inside is a sparkling white dining lounge with a roof-covered terrace to escape into if the winds pick up strength, which are known to sometimes send the sashimi flying. With prices to match Baba’s elevated heights, be prepared for a splurge. Reservations essential.
Best to go: Sunset is a must, for the 360º view of the blazing sky.

With a pool at its heart and the sea and sky stretching out beyond it, East 88 serves up a near-perfect tropical tableau for idling away a sunny afternoon. Watch yachts and long-tail boats glide by in the distance while egrets wade close by in the shallows. Coveted spots are the beachfront double sunbeds, ideal for contemplating the changing hues of the sea. With families welcome, expect to see (and hear) lots of splashy exuberance in the pool. Night time brings smooth DJ tunes.

Phuket’s BEST Beach Bars
This decidedly ‘kid-unfriendly’ resort bar clings to the rocks at the ‘Millionaire’s Mile’ end of Kamala Bay. Though not on the beach, its sandy floor and sun loungers offer a stylish sunbathing alternative, especially if you opt for a soak and swim in the glittering white-marble infinity pool (non-guests of Cape Sienna pay 1,000 baht for pool use). Though the bland pop music selection adds little to the ambiance, judging by the number of people seen snoozing poolside this is a prime spot for a peaceful retreat. Be sure to order a ginger and lemongrass martini for some afternoon zip.

The key systems of security are intrusion detection, access control, and video surveillance. If each of these systems is installed separately, administration and training can burden a company or property owner. Intrusion alarms occur on one system, access badges are administered in a stand-alone database, and intelligent digital video technology runs on dedicated computer equipment. Each system requires service, maintenance, administration, and training.

Surely my insurance will cover me?
I was admitted to hospital with a broken collar bone and already have bills of more than 1,000,000 baht. What kind of insurance issues might I face making a claim for replacement of the bike, my medical bills, the damages somebody I couldn’t understand seemed to be claiming for the death of two dogs (which I'm sure were only stray dogs) and loss of two months' earnings of the operator of the modified bike, who told me they sell papaya salad and grilled chicken every day near the taxi umbrellas next to the beach."
W
e're all offered insurance products with respect to many aspects of our daily lives, such as booking a domestic flight with a budget airline through to compulsory insurance when borrowing monies from a bank. So it's worth pausing to consider whether the insurances we're using, and paying for, really do cover the types of events that occur, or are likely to occur. Insuring for events that are never likely to happen is similar to placing your life savings on Black 8 at a roulette table in Las Vegas immediately after Black 8 came up the last spin of the wheel. However, insurance companies do like to reduce the risks of claims, as is natural in their business. In Thailand, visitors and residents alike face a multitude of common incidents under which their insurance policies will actually be tested in practical terms – making a claim. No matter how many pages your policy document runs to, or how large your insurance premiums are, you don’t really know what the outcome of a claim will be until you try to make one.
"I'd heard rumours jet-skis were dangerous and were banned. I even watched a mini-series on the Internet showing some shocking violent incidents relating to jet-ski operators and visitors to Phuket. However, believing such incidents were issues of the past, I still let my teenage daughter hire a jet-ski because I thought it would be fun. After paying 3,000 baht for 20 minutes, including free life jacket rental, my daughter returned the jet-ski. The operator informed her very politely that she had damaged the jetski underneath and would she kindly pay 80,000 baht compensation. The jet-ski operator said he had consulted with his expert lawyer by telephone, who had told him he couldn’t claim for the damage under his insurance policy and that my daughter must claim under her travel insurance policy if she wanted to get the money back. The operator didn’t have a receipt available to issue for the 80,000 baht cash payment. Is it likely my daughter is covered under her general travel insurance policy?" To take just one example of the general view on jet-skis for hire, the British Consulate website contains a warning as follows: “Do not rent a Jet ski as most problems in Thailand are about Jetskis and motorbikes and scams which revolve around them. Take it from me you can simply leave this alone. It is very problematic.” Surprisingly (or perhaps not), this advice, and that of other countries, is often clearly ignored. A jet-ski operator should have partial insurance over the vehicle. However, there's a limit on that policy. Furthermore, the operator will not wish to make a claim against its own policy, especially if the operator believes the user has been negligent or is at fault.
The first issue with the insurance of the rental company is that it most likely will cover only some minor damage to the motorbike. If there is any indication that you were drinking alcohol and exceeded the legal limit, then all insurance will be ‘vitiated’ or deemed void, and you may be subject to criminal proceedings – through the public prosecutor, or privately by the rental company for criminal damage to property. Similarly, if you were found to be driving recklessly when you overtook the cement truck, you may be subject to criminal proceedings.
Normally, a standard holiday insurance package will exclude dangerous sports such as parasailing, hang-gliding, scuba diving, bungee jumping and using jet-skis. However, many insurers will ‘up-sell’ add-ons to a package to include jet-skis, but then might exclude claims, which can often lead to surprises for the insured party attempting to make a claim. Such exclusions may be: (a) If the use of a jet-ski was not part of a tour package and on a schedule or itinerary. (b) If the jet-ski is not owned and operated through a formal organisation or legal entity.
Should, for any reason, the matter be deemed a civil matter, then you'll be expected to meet with and negotiate with (a) the owners of the dogs and (b) the owner of the modified bike / papaya salad vendor. You should take care to establish that the owners of the dogs truly are the owners, although this will be difficult in practice. You should also note that there are stipulated offences for owners of animals who allow animals in their care to wander on the road and be killed unnecessarily. If you damaged the street vendor's vehicle, then you may need to conduct some research on the daily income of that vendor, which will be difficult if you aren’t familiar with that business. You may well need to arrive at a settlement.
(c) If the user fails to obtain a receipt and/or evidence of any payments made.
None of these costs are likely claimable against an insurance policy.
(d) If payments made do not relate to repair or damage to the jet-ski.
For your own medical costs, you may be able to claim provided you were not committing a criminal offence or are proven to have been intoxicated, or driving the motorbike illegally. The main issue that you may have is that you will be asked to produce a valid driving license for the bike. Being capable of renting a bike is not the same as being permitted to drive it.
If you have an insurance policy and find yourself having to make a payment, then you should always obtain a police report if the police are involved in an incident. You should obtain a translation of any written materials, as such will inevitably be in Thai. Do not sign any statements unless you have consulted a lawyer. Consular assistance may be available for serious incidents. You may find an additional claim has been lodged for ‘loss of earnings’ or ‘loss of use' of the jet-ski for other rentals during a period in which the jet-ski is under repair. Clearly if you were not informed of this possibility before using the jet-ski, a claim of this nature would be unfair, and also would not be covered by general or even special jet-ski insurance cover. Such claims should be resisted where possible. "I used to have a BMX bike when I was eight years old; I'm now 35. I love the idea of super-fast motorbikes as I often watch the Super Bike channels on TV and can see how thrilling it must be for experienced, qualified, lifetime professionals to drive their motorbikes at breakneck speed around specially built racetracks. So I decided to have a few beers in Patong and then hire one of these bikes to drive around the coastal road to Laem Promthep in the fastest time possible, whilst filming myself with a HD camera. When I hired the bike, I signed some kind of insurance document, or maybe a disclaimer, I can’t remember as the beer was quite strong. I then had to hand over my passport to the rental company, which I couldn't really understand as I'd already provided my credit card details to them. Anyway, when I was overtaking a cement truck, I hit a modified bike with a sidecar and killed two stray dogs, which seemed to have been left to run free outside a restaurant. The Super Bike was completely wrecked.

HUGHESKRUPICA CONSULTING We had to sign a compulsory insurance when we hired the boat – or at least that's what I think it was. The policy was very long and in small 4-point font so we didn’t read it as we were in a hurry at the time. Do you think we would be covered for the damage to the boat and the luxury sailboats?" The main issue here is whether the policy covered third party property damage. The other issue is whether you caused the fire by falling asleep when a barbecue was lit – which would be negligent, and would most likely mean you would not be covered by insurance. However, if the barbecue was unconnected or not the cause of the fire or explosion destroying the other boats, then the insurance (if covering third party property) ought to cover the damage. It may also be that the boat owners themselves have cover for such damage. If they do, it may be that both sets of insurers need to liaise with each other to determine which insurance company will pay for which claims. The poor mooring facilities are likely unconnected to the issues you have described and you must take the situation as you found it. You will not be able to attribute blame to the government moorings in relation to this matter. You also should establish, through a private survey, the cause of the fire, to ensure all claims are legitimate.
By Desmond Hughes, Senior Partner, Hughes Krupica. When you're in the hospital, you may be asked to provide your passport as security for the bills of the hospital. This will prove difficult if your passport is with the operator of the bike rental business. Further, your passport is supposed to be retained by you and is not supposed to be used as guarantees by third parties, but often is in practice. At a private hospital in Thailand, you'll be asked, or any persons attending the hospital with you will be asked, to show your insurance policy. The hospital will then communicate with the insurance company to establish that you are properly insured. The hospital will most likely demand payment in advance of any insurance company paying you, and you'll have to claim back the reimbursement from the insurance company. "We were on holiday in Phuket and hired a boat for two days. Whilst we were fishing overnight we decided to have a barbecue on the boat. We were already back next to the marina. We fell asleep and woke up to flames all around us. It was too late to put out the fire, so we had to jump overboard and swim to the marina. There were lots of explosives on the boat which caused a very large explosion, the fire spreading to three luxury sailing boats moored nearby on government provided moorings, which were subsequently destroyed by the spread of the fires. I don’t think they should have been moored in those positions. We didn’t put the explosives on board the boat, and don’t believe the other boats would have caught fire if the owner of our boat hadn’t been so careless with what was aboard. All we did was to fall asleep after a hard day’s fishing.

MUAY THAI
MUAY THAI
SUN, SAND, SEA AND SWEAT Phuket catches the martial arts wave While spending hours upon hours sweating it out at a gym might not sound like an ideal holiday activity for many, ever larger numbers of visitors are arriving to Phuket to do just that. The ancient martial art of Muay Thai, the Kingdom’s national sport, has seen a surge of interest from around the world in recent years, which has launched Phuket into something of a hotbed for Muay Thai training. Along with the international regattas, marathons and Ironman events, the rise of Muay Thai tourism is widening Phuket’s appeal as a place to pursue sport, health and fitness in addition to being a tropical escape. Muay Thai’s global popularity is mainly as a result of the fast growth of mixed martial arts (MMA) – a caged fighting spectacle that has emerged as a top draw for television and stadium audiences for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and other high-profile professional events across North America, Europe and Asia. Thousands of people are trying out the sport not only to compete, but as an invigorating way to get fit. MMA combines several martial arts forms, with Muay Thai being a crucial element in developing a powerful striking technique. Anyone who’s serious about being an MMA contender must learn Muayy Thai.
There are now between 20 and 25 Muay Thai camps catering to tourists around the island, but it's along a small road in Chalong where the fast growth of the sport is most evident. Not too long ago, Soi Tai-ead was a sparsely populated lane lined with rubber and coconut plantations. Today, this 1.5-kilometre stretch of road houses four training camps, several gyms, some 20 guesthouses and resorts (including a place called, aptly enough, Wallop House), and a proliferation of restaurants and shops all aimed at capturing the martial arts visitor boom. It’s a showcase of the power of niche tourism, which has transformed an area well off the beaches with no obvious appeal to tourists into a hive of activity within just a few years. The Tiger Muay Thai and MMA camp sits along this road. Arriving to Tiger, there’s a distinct high-energy ambiance with several thwacks and grunts heard from the men and women doing their combat training sessions. Overseeing the camp is director Will Elliot, who first came to the camp to train but ended up taking on the operations for a fellow American, Tiger’s founder Will McNamara, who resides in the US. Though the camp trains a core group of serious world competitors including UFC champions, a large percentage of Tiger clientele are those aiming to simply fight their way to fitness. Statistics on the number of visitors coming to Phuket specifically for martial arts training are hard to come by, but Tiger alone attracts some 200-300 people to its camp each month. Some savvy marketing and a diversified range of offerings have helped Tiger reign as the largest camp in Phuket, and perhaps all of Thailand, with a second and larger camp newly opened in Chiang Mai. Muay Thai training is just one of many things on offer – there’s also Brazilian jiu-jitsu training, another key part of MMA fighting, as well as yoga, a workout gym, combat gear for sale and nutrition advice. It’s also in the process of adding CrossFit, a branded strength and conditioning programme that Will says is “taking the world by storm”, to its repertoire.
60
Tiger also handles all aspects of living in Phuket from accommodation to car/motorbike rental to visa run and tour services. Through its social events and hospitable staff, there’s a community-like feel to the place. There’s certainly a predominance of tattooed, muscle-bound men here, but Will says that about 30 per cent of Tiger’s customers are women. “We’re not judgmental here. It’s all about people bettering themselves, regardless of their sex, age or fitness level,” he said. There’s been some criticism that such camps are attracting the wrong kind of visitor to Phuket, and a few news stories about violent encounters involving martial artists, including the infamous Lee Aldhouse, a UK kickboxer who’s accused of murdering a US marine following a bar brawl, seem to lend credence to this view. But there’s little evidence to show that martial arts tourists are any more troublesome than other visitors. Indeed, the manager of a nearby apartment block said that the rise of the Chalong camps had been good for their business, sending them a steady stream of guests yearround, none of which have given them any problem problems. They’d had more negative with English teachers than experiences w with any of th their Muay Thai guests, she said. For many, tr training at a Phuket Muay Thai camp may simply be a chance to add some depth and excitement to a tropical holiday, but for others it can h be a lif life-changing, even life-saving pursuit. purs Will Elliot tells of one Tiger customer, 27-year-old James cust Mason, from Essex, whose M obesity was leading to serious health problems.
After an extensive search of ways to improve his health he ended up at Tiger Muay Thai, where his daily training and diet have helped him shed 60 kilograms in nine months, an inspirational feat that prompted a UK television show and a fitness magazine to visit the camp to chronicle his journey. He aims to lose a total of 100 kilograms by the end of the year. When he weighed in at more than 200 kilograms, James was told by his doctor that he’d be lucky to live another 10 years, prompting him to wage a truly Ultimate Fight: the battle for his life. The Winds of Change No one could have foreseen the abrupt changes to Phuket’s shoreline that have swept almost tsunami-like over the beaches in the last few months and most are still feeling the aftershocks. We have had more than a few clients email and even call us to enquire on the status of their favourite beach clubs or restaurants, asking what and why this or that has happened. These enquiries require a reasonably long and repetitive explanation whether by email or on the phone. Repetitive or not, an explanation is needed to understand all that is happening and changing in Phuket. One of the main questions asked is, with all that is happening on the beaches, will these changes affect the value of owners’ property in Phuket? Let’s be clear; the eviction of businesses encroaching on public land will not have any bearing on a property’s value but what will change is the convenience of having such facilities and amenities close to their property. It should be noted that just shops and restaurants on the beach are affected and that other businesses not on the actual beach are operating as per normal.
waiters, cooks, and all those who made a living on the beach are now effectively jobless. This is a very serious problem and the local municipal and labour department is conducting retraining and job replacement for those recently inconvenienced workers. They are also looking to relocate shops and vendors to designated areas in order to help them continue doing business. Those who live here and those who love to visit Phuket to enjoy the island’s beaches, sun, sand, and people all want clean and beautiful beaches, not only in our lifetimes but also for our children and grandchildren. To many people, this may not be seen as a big step and yet some are sceptical about how far or how long this will last, but for now it’s time for change. There are many reasons to come to Phuket and one of the top reasons is to enjoy the island’s beaches. If we can’t keep them clean and safe for all to enjoy then there will not be much going for Phuket in years to come. Helicam Co Ltd have now added another new service to their company, ‘Aerial Mapping’. Using the existing drone Hexocopters combined with new software that allows the helicopter to fly over a course, Aerial Mapping is an affordable way for city planners/ developers to gain high-quality detail and accuracy. GPS coordinates allow the helicopter to follow the preplanned course. A laptop computer is used to program this course then uploaded to the helicopter via an internet router device. Once the upload is complete the helicopter will take off, complete its mission, and then return to the departure point. Back at the Helicam office all the individual shots are then ‘stitched together’ to create a map as shown.
All beaches in Phuket, as well as in Thailand, are public land – and thus for the use and benefit of the people. Previously existing shops, restaurants, beach clubs, and massage shops that were encroaching on public land have now been voluntarily dismantled by the owners or effectively been removed by the authorities. Will these businesses ever return to the beaches? It’s very difficult to say... if they ever do we hope they come back in an orderly and well-planned manner, offering tourists and locals alike a clean, affordable, and good standard of beach environment acceptable to all. If they don’t come back to the beaches, it is very likely that they will be set up in a nearby location. No doubt many visitors to Phuket this high season will be surprised or even astonished when they head out to their favourite beach to sunbathe or to a beach club to chill out, only to find that there are no longer any sun beds, umbrellas, massage shops and beach clubs, as there were last high season. Yes, it’s all gone and yes again, it’s the same beach that you were on last year. Many people who worked the beaches have been displaced by the current cleanup. The beach boys, shop vendors, masseurs,

Check out Monkey Hill Viewpoint
Phuket has plenty to keep you entertained during a visit, even though it's much smaller and more laid back than Bangkok. Here are a few suggestions.
Monkey Hill (Khao To Sae). This hill towers over Phuket City and is easily spotted as the crest is crowded with wireless masts. The approach road is narrow but in reasonable condition, and allows views of the island’s eastern beaches. At the top, is a jogging track. The hill is a favourite place for locals who come here after a day at the office to exercise or just to chill out. There are no specific facilities provided but it is very pleasant to visit the Khao To Sae shrine and pay your respects. Well worth a visit if you can make the time. Don’t forget to bring a bag of peanuts to feed the monkeys who inhabit the hilltop. However, a word of warning; don’t get too close. The monkeys are wild. How to get there: From Damrong Road pass the Provincial Land Office and the Provincial Court on the left hand side, and then turn left onto To Sae road. 82 E1
View Historic Buildings Karon Viewpoint Sometimes referred to as the 'Three Bay Viewpoint', it's located between Nai Harn and Kata Noi Beaches. This is a tastefully developed facility with a Thai-style sala, which offers superb views on several levels. From here Kata Noi, Kata and Karon beaches can be seen and out to sea is Koh Poo (Island). Without doubt one of the island's best views! How to get there: Karon Viewpoint is located along the road between Kata Beach and Nai Harn Beach, just five kilometres from Kata Beach.

A hundred years ago, Phuket City had a prosperous economy based on tin mining, and even back then was an international centre with a large expatriate community of Chinese and Europeans. They built beautiful homes in the style called SinoPortuguese – terraced townhouses with narrow frontages and accommodations which stretch back from the road. The interiors often include walled gardens and fountains, and are beautifully furnished with antiques and Chinese inspired decorations. Rommanee Road is a fine example which has been fully restored. Visit Talang Road, Yaowarat Road and Dibuk Road. Nowadays, these streets in the Chinese quarter have transformed themselves into busy thoroughfares featuring antique shops, speciality restaurants and more. The Provincial Hall, the Phuket Courthouse and the town branch of the Siam City Bank are further examples of architecture from the past. All well worth a visit. 81 C5

Horse Riding If you are here with your family, horse riding is a relaxing and romantic way for you all to explore Phuket's natural scenery. In contrast, a brisk canter along the beach is most invigorating. There are two clubs on the island: Phuket International Horse Club, easily spotted at the entrance to Laguna Resort, is open seven days a week from 8am until 6pm. Phuket Riding Club is located in the southern part of the island on the road to Rawai Beach, and offers riding tuition for all levels of ability including children. The Club is open daily from 7am until 6.30pm.
