It's vintage time in wine country, and there's nothing more cheering than seeing the vineyards harvested for what we hope will turn into the best Vintage ever!

Despite the early rains and a January hailstorm, this year's Vintage is now well underway – albeit the latest on record. For many, it has been a challenging growing season, but the hot, dry weather and cooler evenings in late December through January have made all the difference and left winemakers feeling very optimistic and expecting a quality vintage.

Parched Crow Wines (on the cover this month) may be a relatively new player in the Hunter's extensive wine offerings, but its vines have a history that promises great things. Located on the Tarin Grove Estate and situated at the foothills of the majestic Brokenback range, the newly renovated and charming cellar door boasts panoramic views of the impressive Hunter Valley. This month we chat with owner Ross Crump about his ambitious plans to bring the pastureto-palate experience to residents of the broader Hunter region, an experience that will have them returning time and time again. Read more on page 14.

Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival, brought to you by Creightons Funeral Service, is now in its second decade and has established itself as one of the Hunter’s premier festivals, featuring all things rock ‘n’ roll, cars, music, fashion and dancing. It’s one of the largest festivals of its kind in Australia and a feature tourism event for the area.

There is something for everyone at the Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival - with free entertainment over the weekend, including live rock n roll bands and 50s music, classic car displays, retro market stalls, dancing and retro fashion parades.

Chrisabelle Purses

What started as a way to pass the time and adapt to living in a new country has become a thriving business for Angel of Chrisabelle Purses. With a range of handmade, beautifully designed clasp purses and bags, Chrisabelle Purses is a regular at Wine Country's Handmade in the Hunter markets. This month we caught up with Angel to talk about her passion for design.

HVMAG: Can you please tell us a bit about what you do? How did you come up with the idea?

ANGEL: When my family emigrated to Australia, not only did I have to adapt to a new country, but also I no longer worked full-time as a teacher and became a stay-at-home mum. I had lots of free time, so I began making hair accessories with traditional Japanese fabric flowers. One day, I was given an exceptional piece of beautiful Japanese fabric and thought it would be a waste if I had to cut it into small pieces, so I went to a craft store to look for ideas of what I could make. There, I found a metal frame for clasp purses. It took me a while to learn how to make a full bag! After completing my first clasp purse, I couldn't stop thinking about making more. I started searching for metal frames of different sizes and shapes and started thinking about creating more modern styles of clasp purses.

What types of purses do you sell? What is your top-selling purse? How are your purses made/what materials do you use and why?

I sell clasp purses with firm metal frames that allow me to use heavierweight interfacing for a purse with good shape, structure and durability. My top-selling product is my big clasp purses with 20cm metal frames and chains. Ladies of all ages love these purses, particularly for their style and fabric patterns. Often, I have customers returning to add to their collection or gift my purses for friends and family because of their uniqueness.

My products are made with metal frames, fabric, interfacing and glue. I build my purses around my metal frames, as I have to design different patterns for each size and shape of metal frames. Using these patterns, I sew the fabric portion of the bag with interfacing and linings along with the Japanese fabric. I then glue this part into the metal frames, completing the bags. I choose my materials to be durable for the everyday use of my customers. I enjoy deciding what parts of the fabric I should cut out to make beautiful purses.

What do you like most about Handmade in the Hunter Markets?

I joined Handmade in the Hunter Markets in 2015. What I like most about the markets is that all of the products are locally made with love by the stallholders. The market is an excellent opportunity for us to showcase our talents and connect with our customers to talk about the stories behind and the creation of our products. We admire each other's talent, cheer for each other when we have a good day, and support and encourage each other when we have misfortunes. We not only sell our handmade products at Handmade in the Hunter Markets but make supportive friends. The markets are a nice getaway from other aspects of our busy lives.

PRODUCERS WITH AN EYE TO THE FUTURE

Parched Crow Wines may be a relatively new player in the Hunter’s extensive wine offerings, but its vines have a history that promises great things. Owners Ross Crump and Lisa Hugo have a vision that extends far beyond a boutique winery, and with a new General Manager, up and coming wine industry professional Grace Eglit on board to help realise the vision, it’s definitely one to watch.

Located on the Tarin Grove Estate and situated at the foothills of the majestic Brokenback range, the newly renovated and charming cellar door boasts panoramic views of the impressive Hunter Valley.

Ross Crump is no newbie to the wine industry. He grew up locally at Wollombi on his father’s dairy and cattle farm before starting his working life in the ‘70s with Hermitage Estate and Oakvale Wines.

Here he learnt the complete wine-making process, including the commercial and retail side of the business. An accountant by trade, he’s also worked in local government, but the bulk of his career has been spent as a Marketing Consultant to the coal mining industry, travelling the world, developing the crucial international relationships that the industry depends on.

In 2005 Crump began acquiring property to run Angus beef and now has 3,000 acres of grazing property with over 1200 head of cattle under the banner of Tarin Grove Farms. The properties include the iconic Old McDonalds Flat at Pokolbin (granted to the McDonald family in 1825), Orange Grove at Paterson and East View at Lostock. Along with the purchase of these properties, Crump found himself the custodian of

some precious vines with a solid foundation in history – 15 acres from the McDonald's Flat Vineyard planted by Stephen Drayton in the ‘90s, five acres from the former Thalgara Estate planted by the Tullochs in the '60s, and 20 acres that made up part of the Oakey Creek Vineyard planted by W Drayton & Sons in the '50s.

“I’m a sucker for history,” said Crump.

“I really believe in the historical continuance of the land, its role in tourism and the significance of the vines that came with the properties I purchased. This land has a long history of beef and wine growing, and I want to bring that back. It’s important to me to support the industry and protect the vineyards. Simply on-selling the grapes is a profitless venture, and so, in order to make a return, we settled on the vertical integration of making wine.”

The development of the wine brand is a story in itself that Crump loves to tell and that visitors to the cellar door will find enshrined on the wall as they enjoy their tastings.

“In 2017, the vineyards and surrounds were in the grip of the worst drought in 100 years. McDonald’s Flat, part of our farm, was denuded of any pasture as one of the hottest and driest summers on record prevailed. Just like the Exodus when we were on our knees, bereft of rain, a plague of grasshoppers arrived and quickly got about eating any remaining pasture.

“The vineyards were struggling for a drop of natural moisture, fruit was ripening and set for picking. Eureka! A flock of more than 200 crows

arrived in mid-January and set about balancing their protein diet by devouring the grasshoppers by day. All was good, but the crow is the mortal enemy of vignerons at harvest time.

“The crows, having quelled their hunger, looked to the north. Alleluia, low and behold, the sweet nectar of nearby ripening grapes beckoned! Pre sunset, they flew less than 400m and descended on the vineyards to quench their insatiable thirst for the sweet taste of super ripe shiraz grapes ready for picking.

“By day, protein laid on with grasshoppers aplenty; by afternoon and dusk, an unending supply of wine in its rawest form. Sweet grapes. Nerolike, they took their fill.

“Comme ci comme ça.”

Despite drought, grasshoppers, crows, fire, and covid, Parched Crow Wines managed to launch their new brand of wine, named after those parched crows, and develop their cellar door. All grapes are estate-owned and grown and feature model Hunter varietals such as Shiraz, Semillon, Chardonnay and Muscat, with the wines produced also including Rose and Moscato.

Two new products soon to be launched include the 2022 Sogni D’oro at $25 a bottle (a mistelle-style aperitif wine best served chilled or on ice with a slice of blood orange or a refreshing spritz with soda water) and the 2022 Shiraz Nouveau at $30 a bottle (bright violets on the nose and boasts a delicate palate of soft cherries with a finely textured and elegant finish). All the wines are single vineyard and have been overseen by the

best of the best Hunter Valley Winemakers; Liz Silkman, Xanthe Hartcher and PJ Charteris.

Whilst a new wine label from these historical vines is exciting enough, the vision that Crump and his partner have for Tarin Grove Estate is far greater. Crump has had a new development approved by Cessnock City Council that will sit on 4 hectares opposite the Ben Ean cellar door and include four buildings. The vision is that these buildings will house a butchery selling Tarin Grove Pokolbin Beef, a wine outlet for some of the smaller boutique wineries, a restaurant and café and a brewery. Unfortunately, Covid held up the development, but Crump is eyeing 2024 as the year he will potentially begin building.

“We’re keen to be a pasture-to-palate producer. Cattle, vineyards (grape sales), wine – we do it all! From my local agricultural beginnings, the land has been my home, and it’s my mission to return the McDonald’s Flat area back to its intended purpose. This land was always designated for beef and vineyards, and I’m quite partisan about it.”

To help him realise this vision, Crump recently appointed a new General Manager, Grace Eglit, whose experience in cellar door operations, wine club management, brand development and marketing, not to mention her energy and drive, Crump sees as being crucial to the future of Parched Crow Wines. Previously Eglit worked as PR and Marketing Manager for boutique award-winning winery Briar Ridge.

“This is a rare and exciting opportunity to use my local tourism and wine industry knowledge to develop Parched Crow Wines to its full potential,” said Eglit.

“I was drawn to the commitment to provide quality, handcrafted wines, all of which come from estate-grown and owned fruit and its background affiliated with livestock farm, Tarin Grove – the pasture to palate feel is something fun I hope to combine with our wine services in the future. The opportunity to work with vigneron and farmer Ross and be involved in the production of the wine was an enticing element I couldn’t resist.

“At the moment, my priority is to raise brand awareness and grow foot traffic by leveraging and growing our social media, local events, and community involvement. We have a few picnic days planned that are yet to be launched, which will be a great opportunity for Hunter/Newcastle residents to check us out. I believe that by increasing our presence in the local community, locals will resonate with who we are and what we produce. We are a lot of fun.

“I would also love to grow our Wine Club, offering special events and tastings and expanding our product offerings to develop a special rapport with our customers. We want to keep our visitors and customers engaged, excited to bring their family and friends by coming back for more!”

Crump definitely has his hands full. He is also a one-third owner of Two Rivers, one of the biggest producers in the Hunter Valley, based out of Denman, and still occasionally consults to the mining industry. He sees similarities between coal and wine and agrees with Eglit that the local market is underutilised.

“Both the coal and wine industries are subject to the vagaries of the weather, market demands and quality. In the old days, the wine industry was filled with personalities, and consequently, it seemed to have a greater reach. Small armies of guys travelled the state and country selling their labels into hospitality venues.

Digital mediums have affected wine sales in the same way it’s affected the retail sector. IT’S HARVEST TIME at Margan Wines!

Grape harvest in the Hunter Valley usually kicks off at some stage in January, one of the first for Australian wine regions. In the Broke Fordwich area, tucked away in the corner of the Hunter and home to Margan Wines, the first grapes for Vintage 2023 were picked in midJanuary.

Following a cool Spring defined by mild weather, cool evenings and a wet soil profile, a legacy from the July floods, the grapes have taken their time to ripen. Viticulturalists and winemakers watched their vines,

eagerly looking for signs of increased sugar and flavour ripeness in the grapes, indicating they could start picking. Vintage 2023 has been a game of watching and waiting.

Every winemaker and vigneron across the Valley will have their own story and reference points about how the harvest is shaping up for them. Some are enjoying an easy harvest, while others have experienced cruel hail hits or a reduced crop due to disease from a wet spring. Overall, the region has experienced a sunny, dry ripening season largely devoid of dramatic ‘weather events’ including drought, bushfires, East Coast lows and floods.

Recent Hunter Valley Winemaker of the Year Andrew Margan is excited about the 2023 Vintage, commenting that the warm and dry weather conditions combined with cool evenings have been perfect for ripening the 100 hectares of vines that Margan own. He believes that the longer ‘hang time’ for some of the grapes has allowed for slow and even flavour development in the fruit, which contributes to better flavour in the finished wine.

Margan Wines is a multi-generational grape-growing and winemaking business with an acclaimed wine and food tourism operation. Andrew and Lisa Margan established the business in 1996 in the historic village of Broke, which now, more than 25 years later, includes two of the second generation.

Alessa and Ollie, as viticulturist and winemaker, respectively, are back home and join the Margan Team after experience interstate and abroad, bringing with them a fresh perspective to the brand’s evolution. Andrew is still across all vineyard and winemaking, and Lisa continues to oversee the Restaurant and wine tourism operations.

The estate now farms 100 hectares of vines following regenerative agricultural principles and is certified Sustainably Farmed (SWA). These vineyards are all in the Broke Fordwich GI and are mostly planted on the Fordwich Sill, a unique volcanic soil formation dating back 200 million years. The vineyards are a combination of old vines planted to traditional varieties such as Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz, as well as pioneering

A fun, relaxed tasting experience at SAVANNAH ESTATE

Mount View boasts some of the most stunning views of the Hunter Valley and some of the region's most picturesque vineyards. Nestled in this beautiful corner of the world is Savannah Estate - the perfect first stop on any wine tour. The Savannah Estate story began in 1964 when Ian and Shirley Peterson purchased an old dairy farm at Mount View, intending to farm cattle. In 1971, ten acres of Semillon were planted to supply the nearby McWilliams winery. As they say – the rest is history.

As the vines flourished, new varieties were planted, and by 1981, 40 acres of vines had been planted consisting of Semillon, Chardonnay, Viognier, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. In 1981, Petersons Wines was formed, and the cellar door in Mount View opened that same year, cementing the Peterson family as one of the early contributors to the Hunter Valley wine renaissance, which continues to this day. Today, Ian's son, Colin, runs and manages the business, maintaining and building on his father's legacy.

Savannah Estate was later established on a neighbouring property and named after Savannah Peterson - third-generation winemaker, granddaughter to Ian and Shirley Peterson and daughter to Colin and Judy Peterson, who involved their daughter Savannah in winemaking from an early age.

Savannah has since taken the helm of Savannah Estate, involved across all areas of the business and producing quality wines from small select parcels of premium fruit grown in renowned viticulture areas that best reflect their regionality and character.

Savannah embraces wine and food with the same intensity and passion as her forbears and is always hard at work with Gary Reed, who has been the Chief Winemaker across Savannah Estate and Petersons Wines for more than 30 years, to produce new and alternate varieties and styles that include Semillon, Chardonnay, Verdelho, Pinot Gris, Vermentino, Tempranillo, Rosé, Chambourcin, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz as well as a Sparkling White and Sparkling Malbec.
