THE HYDROGEN VALUE CHAIN ACHIEVED WITH MIDDLE EAST COLLABORATION

Hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe, can be blended with or used as a substitute for fossil fuels in a wide variety of applications in the Middle East.

GENSET MANUFACTURING SITE CELEBRATES A 4-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Deutz’s Moroccan subsidiary, MagiDeutz celebrates its fourth anniversary. Since 2019 it has focussed its generator set manufacturing at a production site in Sapino. This is now well-known as the central production site for Deutz power generation equipment for the Northern African market.

The site in Sapino is located in an industrial park close to the Casablanca airport. It covers an area of 3420 m2 which is used to manufacture of Deutz gensets.

Deutz said the manufacturing processes at the plant have set new standards in terms of quality, productivity, and health and safety. The

previous manufacturing site offered only limited scope for growth and modernization due to its central location in Casablanca.

Today Deutz offers both diesel and hybrid variants, either battery-driven or powered by solar module.

The concept is that if the engine generates more electricity than needed, any excess energy can be stored in the battery.

If required, this energy can then either boost the engine or even act as the sole power supply source, resulting in fuel savings of up to 65 per cent, Deutz says. If the diesel engine fails, the battery is also able to keep the genset operational for up to 24 hours.

Green hydrogen, produced through renewable energy, is likely to play a critical role in decarbonisation strategies in several industries.

Siemens Energy is a pioneer in Green Hydrogen technology, using proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology to convert electricity from renewables into ‘green’ hydrogen and oxygen.

There is no waste or CO2 emissions. The hydrogen can then be stored for fuel-cell cars, used as an industrial gas, or even transformed to efuels like e-methanol, e-gasoline, etc. Such fuels can be used to fuel a power plant. Green hydrogen has the potential to become the foundation fuel for a future clean economy.

It will be a game-changer for decarbonisation strategies as the Gulf nations look to achieve climate goals and deliver a more sustainable future for all. Siemens Energy says it is fully

committed to the development of the entire hydrogen value chain.

This starts with renewable energy in the form of solar or wind power and goes through grid integration with Siemen’s intelligent grid products, right through to the transportation and storage of hydrogen or derivates.

A crucial component in this value chain is hydrogen electrolysers. The PEM technology has a variety of benefits; it is highly efficient at high power density, produces high product gas quality, requires low maintenance, and provides reliable operation, delivering no chemicals or impurities.

THE MIDDLE EAST & HYDROGEN - A CLIMATEFRIENDLY ALTERNATIVE TO FOSSIL FUELS

Thanks to the Arabian Gulf region’s abundance of inexpensive solar energy, green hydrogen is a market where GCC countries have an advantage over many others.

Many GCC countries’ national visions are aligned with the circular economy concept especially with regards to hydrogen production.

For the energy transition and climate protection, hydrogen (H2) is one of the key instruments to effectively reduce emissions from energy generation. In 2017 Qatar reconfigured its export market, switching 25% of exports from GCC member UAE to East Asia, including China, Singapore and South Korea. In doing so, it became the world’s fifth largest hydrogen exporter, with sales of more than US$520m by 2019.

Hydrogen is now being considered as an economic saviour for other GCC countries as the global energy market transforms following the Covid-19 pandemic and moves to decarbonise.

Saudi Arabia, the world’s second-biggest oil producer, has committed to hydrogen in a big way. In February 2020 Aramco, the kingdom’s energy giant, announced it would invest US$110bn in the biggest shale gas development outside the US to extract the potential fuel from the ground through fracking.

Riyadh is not going to follow the usual route and export the product as a liquefied natural gas (LNG), which would place it in direct competition with Qatar, the world’s largest LNG exporter. Instead Riyadh plans to use the extracted gas to produce hydrogen.

If produced in a climate-friendly way, hydrogen offers a compelling, sustainable, and efficient alternative to fossil energy sources such as coal, oil, and natural gas. The European Union, for example, intends to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

Green and Blue Hydrogen: Climate-Neutral Fuel and Energy Store

Compared to fossil fuels, the carbon emissions of sustainably produced hydrogen are much lower. About 96% of the hydrogen produced around the globe is produced from natural gas, oil, and coal.

Not all hydrogen types come from zero-carbon production. Distinction is made between green, blue, turquoise, and gray hydrogen.

Green hydrogen is produced via electrolysis using renewable energies, while blue hydrogen is produced using the steam reforming method in which the CO2 is captured and stored. At the bottom line, the production of both types of hydrogen is carbon-neutral.

Hydrogen approved for use as fuel for MWM gas gensets

Besides the benefit of lower emissions, the use of hydrogen also affects the efficiency, initial investments, fuel and maintenance costs, and the material quality of the piston engines.

The properties of hydrogen give rise to a number of structural requirements which must be met and that are vital for products that support hydrogen.

For example, this includes a wide range of flammability (enables lean mixtures), high autoignition temperature (similar to methane), low ignition energy (risk of premature ignition and flashback), and potential material incompatibilities (embrittlement of the steel). The developers of the MWM gas engines have mastered these challenges through ongoing research.

MWM has extensive experience in the use of gas engines with hydrogen admixture. Through the deployment of various MWM products and technologies

in customer projects, MWM has implemented trend-setting projects with a hydrogen content of up to 60%.

MWM gas engines are already capable of running with a hydrogen admixture of up to 10% without any technical modifications.

Higher hydrogen admixtures of up to 25 vol% are also possible with MWM gas engines; in this case, however, technical modification is required in order to ensure safety and best-possible performance and efficiency of the energy generation.

For customers who want to invest in new engines for continuous operation, base load supply, or peak load operation, MWM has introduced gas engines that can run on natural gas with a hydrogen admixture of up to 25%.

This applies to the TCG 3016, TCG 3020, and TCG 2032 series. For customers who want to upgrade their plants for the use of hydrogen, MWM offers retrofit kits for the gas engines of the TCG 3016, TCG 3020, and TCG 2032 series in order to enable a hydrogen admixture of up to 25%.

This offering facilitates the transition to plant operation with hydrogen admixture, thereby boosting operational efficiency and

reducing emissions.

Benefits of the operation of MWM gas engines with hydrogen

•Climate-friendly, future-proof alternative to fossil fuels;

•Energy generation with reduced carbon emissions;

•Easier compliance with emission limits;

•Based on long-standing experience with various technologies;

•New engines and retrofit kits for MWM gas engines of the TCG 3016, TCG 3020, and TCG 2032 series available for hydrogen admixture of up to 25%;

A NEW 16MW POWER PLANT NOW SUPPORTS THE NATIONAL GRID IN SAUDI ARABIA

A16MW power plant - made up of 8 individual gensets linked together - has been installed to support the National Grid in the Kingdom’s western region.

As the installation took place in a residential area, strict and specific regulations had to be followed for the noise level, emissions and safety. The work has been signed and accepted by the relevant authorities, reports the Saudi Diesel Equipment Company.

A spokesman commented: “Many thanks for PEAX staff for such professional work and for a good-looking site.”

Installation and operation activities were carried out by PEAX Equipment Rental - Branch of Saudi Diesel Equipment Group. PEAX Rental and Leasing is part of TAWAD Group which has business interest in Automotive – Heavy Equipment – Power Generation and Real Estate.

PEAX is currently one of the fastest growing car rental and leasing companies in Saudi Arabia with over 2,000 active units in operations.

The 16MW diesel powered peaking power plant has two main functions. Firstly, to support the mains grid transformers each day in long term parallel mode, during the peak hours, when the 20MW transformers are overloaded.

Secondly, it will operate in island mode if any transformers need to be taken out for repair or maintenance. In such an instance the 16MW diesel powerplant would then supply that area.

Typically, a setup like this would have a a SCADA industrial PC system where the authorities could monitor and control the entire system from one location.

The SCADA Industrial PC Control System monitors the fuel economy of the generating sets. The customer can then decide whether to run two generating sets at a lower power, or one single unit.

In the case where one of the mains transformers needs to be taken offline for repair or maintenance, the customer can start all 8 generating sets, synchronise them together and cover the load of this transformer for the required amount of time.

The Saudi Electricity Company SEC was established in 2012 and is responsible for planning, designing, developing, operating and maintaining the transmission network in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Today the transmission network spans more than 90,000 CKM to cover more than 13,000 cities and villages.

Saudi Arabia is currently enhancing the capacity of its power sector (electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and smart grid) to meet increasing demand efficiently from residential and commercial consumers for electricity,

and to support the diversification of its domestic energy mix.

Saudi Arabia aspires to replace the petroleum currently used to generate 42% of the country’s 110-gigawatt daily electricity needs with a mix of 50% natural gas and 50% renewable energy by 2030.

The Ministry of Energy’s spending on power and renewable energy projects is expected to reach US$293 billion by 2030. Additionally, Saudi Arabia’s Energy Minister has revealed a national plan to spend US$38 billion in energy distribution by 2030.

To reduce oil consumption in the generation of power, Saudi Arabia plans to upgrade its entire power generation, distribution, and transmission sector.

In addition, Saudi Arabia will develop over 58 GW of solar and wind power, and it will phase out all power stations that use petroleum and diesel. Saudi Arabia also plans to replace its outdated transmission and distribution infrastructure with smart grid technology and promote international grid connectivity. It is estimated that the country will almost double its power generation capacity from 82 GW in 2018 to 160 GW by 2040. saudidiesel.com.sa
