Points of Interest
35 years. Wow! Who would have thought? Women’s Edition was launched in June of 1986. I was 30 years old. My thought was to provide small businesses here in Omaha an opportunity to speak to you, our readers. It has been quite the ride! I have had the privilege of meeting thousands of small business owners over the years. I have advertisers who have been with Women’s Edition this whole time. Honeyman Rent-All is our longest term advertiser, and they are still with us today. I have seen small businesses grow, thrive, be sold, and, in some cases, watched as the principals retired. I send my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you. A lot of our readers have matured and are now sharing the magazine with their daughters…and granddaughters! When I’m out and about and run into the women who have read us all these years, most of you have a hard time believing it has been this long. I met a lady the other day when looking at landscaping material. She introduced herself and told me we had met “a few years back.” I remembered her…but it had been more than 30 years! She said no, there is no way it has been that long! I gently told her that yes, it HAD been that long! You have followed me through my kids growing up. Carissa was 7 years old when I started out of my home. I shared with you the birth of my son, Adam, in 1990. The passing of my parents in the 1990s. Then came Carissa’s marriage to Ken, the birth of my first granddaughter, Savannah, and the passing of my husband, Jim, in 2008. McKenna joined Carissa, Ken, and Savannah in 2011. And Adam’s marriage to his wife, Sam, in 2018. I also have used this column to introduce you to my husband, Manny Chavez. We were married on August 25, 2019, at sunset, at Hanalei Bay in Kauai, Hawaii, seven years to the day after we met. We are still newlyweds, learning from one another each and every day. My life has taken lots of twists and turns, just like all of yours. There have been ups and downs, highs and lows. The one consistency, through all of this, has been this column. I have written it every single month since June of 1986. When I sit down to write Publisher’s Notes, I feel as if I am once again connecting with a dear friend. That is how I think of all of you who read us every month. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Let’s take a deep breath and start our 36th year! P.S. I can’t mark our 35th year without mentioning Roxy Orr, my Operations Manager, who has been with me since 1988. I couldn’t have done it without her! Thank you, Roxy. Thank you!

Easy Classic Crepes In a blender, mix 3/4 cup of cold water, 1/2 cup of cold milk, 2 eggs, 1/4 cup of melted butter, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1 cup of flour. Blend for 30 seconds until smooth. Let the batter rest in the fridge for at least 30–40 minutes or up to overnight. When ready to prepare, wipe a nonstick skillet with vegetable oil and heat to medium. Pour 3 Tablespoons of batter into the bottom of the pan. Tilt the pan to cover the bottom and a bit up the side. Cook for 1–2 minutes until the crepe is light brown. Turn over and cook for another 30 seconds. Continue with the rest of the batter. Stuff with your choice of diced fresh fruits, Nutella, pudding, jam, whipped cream, vanilla sugar, lemon curd, diced ham or crispy bacon, toasted coconut, scrambled eggs, or cheese. Roll up burrito style and dust with powdered sugar, if desired. Dad’s Favorite Quiche Bake a pie shell at 375 degrees for 5 minutes—prick the bottom first. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of grated cheddar cheese on the bottom of the pie crust. Squeeze the water out of 1 cup of thawed chopped spinach and spread it over the cheese. Add 1/4 pound of sliced mushrooms and another 1/2 cup of shredded cheese. Mix together 4 eggs and 1/2 cup of whole milk or half-and-half. Pour the egg mixture over the spinach mixture. Bake on a cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 40–50 minutes, until bubbly and an inserted knife comes out clean. Party Queso In a small saucepan, combine an 8-ounce package of cream cheese, 1/2 cup of grated American cheese, 1 cup of grated pepper Jack cheese, 1/2 cup of milk, a dash or two of hot sauce, and 1 can of

small green chilies or a diced jalapeño. Heat on low for 5 minutes, stirring, until melted and smooth. Add 1/4 cup of chopped cilantro, if desired. If the queso is too thick, add more milk until you reach the desired consistency. Serve with tortilla chips, toasted breads, mini-naans, or veggies. Creamy Corn Melt 2 Tablespoons of butter and stir in 2 Tablespoons of flour. Blend until smooth, then set aside. In a stockpot, combine 2 packages of frozen corn (20 ounces each), 1 cup of cream, 1 cup of milk, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 2 Tablespoons of sugar. Bring to a low boil, stirring often, and simmer on low. Add the flour and butter mixture and mix until well blended. Cook until creamy. Add black pepper or red pepper flakes, as desired.

A Few Words From One Of Our Advertisers:
Omaha’s Premier Female Remodeling Contractor
“I began advertising with Women’s Edition starting with the November 2019 issue and I have been thrilled with the results! I’ve had numerous new clients come to the gallery because they saw my ads in Women’s Edition, even as I’ve been working by appointment in recent months due to the pandemic. Most had never been to downtown Ralston, where I’m located, so introducing them to our town and what we have to offer has been another benefit! The advertising has resulted not only in sales, but also in new followers on my social media platforms and new newsletter subscribers. Together with their outstanding customer service and sales results, advertising with Women’s Edition has been one of the best investments I’ve ever made for my business. Here Comes the Sun! Summer Trends on Tap
By Holly Bell
After a year of being cooped up, we are ready to show off some cute summer outfits. Cues from fashion-forward celebrities are always a good prediction of upcoming trends. Designers are offering us fashion that is made for fun this year. Let’s enjoy dressing up again! Here are my top 10 trends for this summer. 1. Ruffles and frills. A little femininity never hurt anyone! A top with a ruffle detail will be very much on trend this summer. Worn with a tailored jean, pant, short, or skirt, a tastefully ruffled top is doable for both the young and the young at heart. Keep in mind that ruffles are great in small doses—don’t overdo them! 2. Mom jeans. This summer, swap those skinny jeans for a looser, high-waisted jean. Once you try this surprisingly flattering style, you will never go back! They are so on trend but so comfortable, too. Stores are offering a plethora of styles and colors for you to choose from. 3. Tailored pieces. Button-down menswear-inspired shirts make a welcome return this summer, along with the menswear-inspired blazer. Tailored pieces elevate your look for any occasion! These sharp pieces are professional and versatile—try pairing them with your Mom jeans for an up-to-the-minute look. 4. Cotton summer dresses. Nothing looks or feels more refreshing! Tiny prints and all-over white will take you on vacation this year, even if it’s only in your own backyard. This classic look is back in full force with balloon sleeves, or puff sleeves, or really any kind of sleeves. Flirt with maxi and mini lengths ready to catch summer breezes.
5. Comfy platform sandals. Many of us would love to add a little height, but the thought of wearing heels—after so many months of comfortable shoes—makes us wince. Platform sandals with cushy soles are the perfect answer for this summer. Fashionable, affordable, and comfortable! You will want to buy a pair for every outfit. 6. Defined shoulders. Designers have been trying to bring back shoulder pads for a long time. Shoulder pads create a flattering V-shape on the upper body by widening the shoulders and, thus, narrowing the waist and hip. No matter what designers offer, though, today’s consumers have pushed back on the idea of shoulder pads. The end result is a trimmed-down padded shoulder or 10

a little puff or ruffle at the top of the Apparel = Jewelry shoulder that creates some interest and flair. This little embellishment Polish Pottery also builds a flattering body shape. 7. It’s summer—why Beautif not institute Tropical Shirt Fridays? y YOU… Bright colors signify summer, so don’t be afraid to bring a California vibe along with you wherever you go. 8. Anchors away. There is a reason that nautical is always a summer classic: red, white, and blue is a combination that everyone can wear and never ings at… your surround d n a fails to look put together. Now that we are in high-waisted mode, everyone should have a nautical-inspired pant. Move Forward With Confidence Chastain-Otis Insurance and Financial Services
By Maria Harding
Some life changes occur suddenly, while others happen so gradually that the shift goes unnoticed until viewed in retrospect. For your financial health, it’s important that your insurance coverage stays in step with both kinds of changes. Relying on the experienced team at Chastain-Otis Insurance gives clients peace of mind that their personal wealth, business assets, and employees’ benefits remain secure. Dave Chastain describes himself as the “semi-retired” team leader at Chastain-Otis. He himself is experiencing a shift in his life and career. As part of that transition, he has sold ownership of the company to his son, Sean, and family. Sean has worked alongside his father since 1998, just as Dave worked in conjunction with his own father, company founder Dick Chastain, beginning in 1972. “We’re one of the few insurance companies this size that are truly family or locally owned,” says Dave proudly. It’s a legacy that indicates an incredible dedication to the community and a thorough understanding of its needs. Chastain-Otis offers three branches of coverage—Personal Coverage, Commercial Coverage, and Financial Services for life insurance and group benefits. Chastain-Otis works with multiple major carriers and is licensed in 20 states. The roster of carriers changes regularly. “Some companies just aren’t competitive anymore,” explains Dave. “Sometimes there are mergers; things change often in that industry.” Chastain-Otis stays abreast of the efficacy and dependability of all carriers it represents. When asked what keeps him connected to this work, besides the obvious family ties, Dave responds, “The main thing is that I love the people we work with. The staff, the clients, the underwriters—the relationships you make are what you hold dear.” Undoubtedly, Dave has seen a lot of changes to the industry in five decades. The most notable shifts have been in technology. “When I first started, there were no computers, there was no fax machine,” he laughs. “My generation is used to doing things on paper, whereas some of the younger agents are used to emails and texts. When COVID-19 came along, obviously things changed a lot for everyone.” Indeed, the pandemic has shaken and shaped our society in many ways. In the insurance industry, the shift is evident in three major areas. First, many clients have had time at home to complete renovation projects and need to make related adjustments to their insurance coverage. Second, an entirely new category of classification codes has been created to cover workers’ compensation for employees working from home. Third, businesses dealing with sensitive information must evaluate whether having employees work from home presents an increased security risk. “I don’t know that they 12
June 2021
would have the Dave Chastain same firewalls and the same protections on their home-based systems,” reasons Dave. Chastain-Otis agents do not necessarily wait for clients to contact them about policy adjustments. Dave says, “If we see a fairly big increase in the premium, we’ll automatically reach out to the customer, and then we can shop around.” For businesses, he recommends an annual review to evaluate coverage. “We look at payroll numbers, sales numbers,” he says. “Are you growing or expanding, opening up new offices? We like to stay in touch.” “It’s an interesting statistic,” Dave says of his industry, “that approximately 80 percent of an insurance agent’s customers are within five years of their own age. Some of my customers have been with me for over 40 years.” Because of this, Dave has discovered a way to continue serving the community, even as he transitions away from Chastain-Otis. “A lot of my customers are entering into Medicare,” he shares. “I’m helping people who have questions about how Medicare works. There’s a lot of information out there, and some of it is confusing. I’ve gotten proficient in that, and in knowing when to take Social Security or when to hold off.” He provides this service at little or no cost to his customers. Looking toward the future of the industry, Dave Chastain predicts, “There will be other issues like COVID-19,” but adjustments are being made. “Insurance companies are actually coming out with some policies that are going to be available in the future for business interruption coverage due to pandemics. Right now, the policies for business coverage exclude that.” As for his future as a “semi-retired” person, this husband, father, and grandfather anticipates a lot more time at the lake. He has dedicated years of service to the world of insurance, and the legacy built at Chastain Otis Insurance and Financial Services will endure under capable leadership. “Who knows what’s on the horizon?” muses Dave. I guess that is exactly the point. The office for Chastain Otis Insurance and Financial Services is at 10822 Old Mill Road, Suite 2, in Omaha. A Woman’s Work
Heroes and Strangers The Lives of Dads
By Sharon Knierim
Some of us are fortunate enough to have grown up with fathers who were seriously committed to parenting. These men who we treasured as the leaders of our families typically sought to be paragons of virtue, hard workers, and dispensers of all kinds of wisdom, guiding us toward our own adulthood. Many modern dads jump right into the role of fatherhood by changing diapers, providing bottles, and crawling out of bed for that much-dreaded 2 a.m. feeding. Not so long ago, this was unheard of. Today, the bonding between father and child seems to begin earlier than it did in the past. Expectant fathers are very often involved in the prenatal aspects of pregnancy and in childbirth…which used to be a singular journey for a mother-to-be and her unborn child. Today, however, we see soon-to-be papas at birthing classes and assisting in the labor and delivery of their own children. Many of today’s dads are as familiar with their children’s inoculations and school grades as their counterparts and are often involved in daily activities with their offspring. No longer are children strangers to their father, wandering in and out of his life like actors in a stage play.
MPTS
Growing up, we learn all the good things about our dads. We learn to understand and appreciate their strengths. We focus on their good qualities. Whether they project a John Wayne–like persona or a likeness to Atticus Finch, we love our dads. A father is often the rock that holds an entire family together. Beyond providing a major income for the family, his very presence is reassuring for every member of the brood. Typically, after being under our dad’s wing for at least 18 years, we come to value and welcome his talents and very presence. In essence, as we grow and mature, Dad becomes our hero. He is the one who can solve problems. He is the one we come to for advice and counseling. We often seek his approval, above and beyond the approval of all others. This feeling is not to be confused with adoration or adulation…it’s a form of respect that grows, over the years, into something almost tangible.

Somewhere along the route to our own adulthood, we begin to pick up little hints that Dad may have been someone else in his earlier life. It usually begins with a slip of the tongue by a friend or relative who shared Dad’s youth. We learn about activities that we cannot fathom our own fathers taking part in. Does Dad have a split personality? Did he really dance on tables or pull pranks that we would never dare to try? Can it be possible that Dad was once involved with a woman other than Mother? Well, hang on to your hats, girls. Dad probably doesn’t have a split personality, but he did have a life before his chicks were born. Everybody deserves his or her own youth. When we are young, we experiment and learn from our own mistakes. Youth is the time to be free of encumbrances and many responsibilities. When we are young, many of us are focused on ourselves and our friends. We are strangers to who we later become. Some people call this “getting it out of our systems.” Just as we ourselves had more fun than should be legal, so it was with our fathers. It can be a shock to discover that dear old Dad wasn’t always the guy who took us camping or made sure we had our allowance. Before taking on his role as head man of the family, Dad had to grow up, and part of growing up is branching out. So, can a dad be a hero and a stranger at the same time? The answer is a resounding: YES, HE CAN. After all, who would want a dad who had been nothing but utterly responsible all his life? All people are multifaceted and live lives that include all kinds of experiences. These experiences make us who we are today. These experiences allow us to make decisions and to understand what our lives are all about. So, if you see your father gazing off into the distance with a wistful or melancholy look on his face, allow him that time. After all, he might be remembering a young man who used to be so familiar and now seems like a stranger. When he comes back to the present, take the time to let him know how much you appreciate him. After all, even heroes need a pat on the back from time to time.

Custom Gems Feel the Lure of Gemstones
By Linda Sutherland
Precious stones, semi-precious stones, crystals, geodes, fossils, minerals, silver, gold, rocks, carvings, cabochons—you’ll find it all at Custom Gems, Omaha’s most fascinating gemstone store. I have always been drawn to rocks and stones and gems. I’ve spent many wondrous times combing beaches and searching for glittering stones, and I have quite the collection to prove it, but to say that I was filled with awe and wonder upon first walking into this gorgeous shop is an understatement! Tim Kautsch, the proud owner and truly knowledgeable proprietor of Custom Gems, gave me a tour. There is so much here to take in! It will surely take several visits to get the full effect and absorb all that resides within the walls of this quality shop. When I say “quality,” I mean museum-quality pieces that are tucked in and around this treasure chest of a store. Tim is a Gemologist who purchased Custom Gems in 2009. He had previously been the manager of the store, so he knew his stuff long before he took the reins. Originally, the store was owned by Ed and Erma Pharoah, who shared a passion for rocks and minerals. Ed was an earth science teacher whose hobby of rock collecting and love of minerals led them to open the store in 1975. Erma taught silversmithing classes at the store and Ed taught lapidary classes. What is lapidary, you ask? It is the art and process involved in cutting, polishing, grinding, and engraving gems. The word comes from “lapis,” which is Latin for “stone,” and the earliest roots of lapidary may date back as far as a million years. Some people have long believed that certain precious stones could possess powers of healing and health benefits. Regardless of what you believe, there is no denying that few of us can resist the lure of precious stones. When the Pharoahs retired from Custom Gems, a “rockhound” by the name of Chuck Swanson became the next owner, making beautiful custom jewelry. Now, Tim works side-by-side with his brother, Kevin. Along with the craftsmen on their team, they have created a magical place. At first glance, you would never know how many services they provide at Custom Gems. Tim offers custom jewelry design and jewelry repair, ring sizing, stone cutting and polishing, gem and stone setting, rock tumbling, laser welding, bead stringing, and so much more. They can create the perfect unique engagement and wedding rings based on your own design ideas. One of their specialties is refashioning outdated or unworn pieces into new pieces that offer sentimental value and are a pleasure to wear. “In most cases, jewelry 18

designing is a sentimenL-R Dustin Clayton, Kevin Kautsch, tal journey,” Tim says. “We Tim Kautsch (Owner), Heather Steel can create custom pieces or reuse old gems and stones that were family heirlooms and make them fashionable again.” The talented staff members at Custom Gems have a combined 54 years of experience. They all seem to have one thing in common: dedication to their craft. Tim has a genuine love for things that come from the earth. He combines that with his uncanny ability to interpret what his customers want him to create with distinction and the utmost care. Tim loves many things about his work, but what he loves best is “giving our customers a great experience and seeing that they are pleased with their creation.” This dedication to their customers is what drives people back to Custom Gems again and again. “Customers are the boss, and we want each one to have a unique, honest, and happy encounter here.” Tim and his staff are very knowledgeable on the history of fossils, geodes, gems, and other fascinating items that reside in this shop. As they say at Custom Gems, they’re “more than just gems!” Besides a stunning inventory of fossils and minerals, they also have all the tools and supplies you would need to make your own jewelry. Whether you choose to purchase a pre-made item, commission a custom piece, or create your own jewelry, there’s no denying that gemstone jewelry makes a wonderful gift. For extra sentimental value, you can choose a birthstone or another stone that has special meaning to you and your recipient. Of course, you can always select a piece solely for its exquisite beauty! At Custom Gems, you’ll find amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, quartz, obsidian, agates, tourmaline, hematite, aventurine, jasper, jade, aquamarine, diamonds, tiger’s eye, opals, topaz, and so much more. We all need some gems in life! Check them out online at customgemsomaha.com or visit the store at 8487 Frederick Street, in Omaha. They are open Monday through Saturday and are currently offering curbside drop-off and pick-up for repairs and in-store browsing with certain limitations. Anti-Aging Potions and Procedures Wrinkle Reduction for a Smoother You! By Janette Calabro
There’s an old saying that age doesn’t bring wisdom—it just brings wrinkles. The truth is that age usually brings both, but age isn’t the only contributor to what some people lovingly call“character lines.”Let’s look at what causes wrinkles, who is most susceptible, and what we can do about it. Exfoliation ingredients are great in a wrinkle cream, and As we get older, the middle layer of our skin, the derthe gold standard for many dermatologists is retinoid, a form mis, starts to thin out. Smoking also adds creases and wrinkles, as does smoother, lifted skin. Look for microdermabrasion scrubs and exposing your skin to polluted air. Ultrasound energy is unique in that it can tighten skin and diminish wrinkles. Check with your favorite medical spa or dermatologist’s office for this process, known commercially as Ultherapy. Focused energy is deposited deep below the skin’s surface to stimulate new collagen growth, plumping skin and increasing its elasticity. This procedure is non-invasive, takes about 90 minutes, and is typically done on the brow, neck, and chin. Radiofrequency is similar but uses heat energy instead of ultrasound energy. Chemical peels can resurface skin for a fresh, dewy look. To erase deeper wrinkles, try laser resurfacing, including the commercially known Fraxel. Laser resurfacing is safe and minimally invasive, treating fine lines and wrinkles on the face, neck, chest, and even hands. It removes the top layer of skin—all of those dull, dead skin cells—to leave you with a healthy glow. The gentle laser essentially creates micro-injuries, which promotes cell turnover and jumpstarts your skin’s natural healing process. You should expect to see continued improvement during the three to six months after the procedure. Every time we squint, frown, laugh, or smile, we use our facial muscles. Those repetitive expressions are the stuff of life, but they also create crow’s feet and brow furrows between our eyes—a look that makes us seem tired and older. That’s where Botox and her cousin, Dysport, can help. Both are made from a purified version of the botulinum toxin. When injected into frown lines, they block the signals that tell the facial muscles to contract. The result? Softer wrinkles around the forehead, eyes, and eyebrows. Average results last about four months. The Mayo Clinic recommends that Botox injections be performed by an experienced doctor. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons,
dermal fillers continue to top the list for non-surgical treatment of wrinkles. Volume-boosting injectables aren’t going anywhere, and they keep getting better every year. Juvéderm Voluma was FDA-approved for chin enhancements this year, marking the first time a filler has been approved outside of the lip and cheek areas. Juvéderm, a hyaluronic acid, adds volume for a youthful look. Another popular filler, Restylane, is made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally produced in the body. We already know the benefits of topical hyaluronic acid. As a filler, Restylane can immediately correct mild to moderate wrinkles around the mouth, eyes, and even the backs of your hands. Today’s fillers have fewer chemical modifications than in the past, which means a purer hyaluronic acid that more closely mimics your body’s natural acid. A combination procedure called a “liquid face lift” gets good results without surgery. The procedure is customizable, relying on a combination of dermal fillers and neuromodulators like Botox in just the right quantities. Over time, the cumulative effects of our lifestyle choices, along with sun exposure and simply the passage of time, can make us look…well, old. When you look in the mirror and decide it’s time to turn back the clock, improve your self-esteem, and get on with your life, make a plan with your med spa doc, plastic surgeon, or dermatologist for a brighter and better you. The topical creams, dermal fillers, and noninvasive surfacing procedures that science and medicine have brought us can help brighten, tighten, and erase those wrinkles. Stark Media Films Stark Media was born out of a six-year stint as IT/desktop support for a large credit card processing company. I then stumbled onto an opportunity to make “videos” for that same company. I said yes. My role was to produce in-house corporate marketing videos. Having no real experience as a videographer, I had to adopt the “fake it ‘till you make it” mentality. And it worked. Fast forward three years. The excitement was missing, I was yearning for more meaningful projects. I became complacent and uninspired. Although it did put food on the table, I yearned to produce something with more impact and meaningful. Then along came yet another opportunity to help produce a short film about Alzheimers. That changed the game for me. This is what I was reaching for. Real stories, real people who inspire and provoke viewers. It was the most challenging endeavor I had done at the time. Understanding how to tell a strong story in the least amount of time, and how to engage the viewer for the duration of the piece, is not easy. Our purpose is to make something powerful, moving, and memorable. Recently, we produced a “Memory” video for a retired couple. Their story was captivating and powerful. Everybody has a story just waiting to be told. Whats’s your story?

ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk Let’s End Prostate Cancer!
By Janette Calabro
Omaha’s 2021 ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk is moving forward in person this year on Saturday, August 7, at Lake Zorinsky Park. (There’s also a virtual option available.) The 5K Run/Walk and one-mile walk event is hosted by Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology. Its purpose? To fundraise support for prostate cancer patients and families. Create your own team or join solo for this event, and witness highlights like Survivor & Caregiver Recognition and the Kids Superhero Dash for Dad. Register for free at zerocancerrun. org/omaha, where you can even create your own fundraising page. “We can’t wait for you to join us in making a difference for men and their families,” says Emily Sybrant, who has been the Midwest Chapter Director for ZERO—The End of Prostate Cancer for the past three years. “We started this event in 2019 with Kirk Montagne, a volunteer from Omaha whose family has been impacted by prostate cancer. Kirk orchestrated a meeting between ZERO and Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology. There was an instant connection! It only took about 15 minutes to decide we would be partnering up.” Emily is passionate about spreading awareness for early detection and informing men about the risks of prostate cancer. “The vision of ZERO is creating Generation ZERO—the first generation of men free from prostate cancer!” Katie Krimmel, Omaha Race Director for Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology, is excited to see the event happen live this year, since last year’s event was virtual only. She’s implementing safety precautions so that the event can be safe and fun for everyone. For Katie, the biggest impact is the day of the event, when she sees how many people show up to support their loved ones who have fought or lost the fight to prostate cancer. “Prostate cancer is not something men want to talk about,” Katie notes, “but when they come to the event and see how many people it affects, I think it really opens their eyes. They feel supported, they hear stories from other men who are fighting, and they can talk to doctors and pharmaceutical representatives.” It’s important for men and women to know the facts about prostate cancer. The disease affects one in eight men. Veterans and men with a family history of prostate cancer have an even higher risk of developing the disease. The good news? If caught early, prostate cancer is nearly 100 percent treatable. “We want to encourage men to stay on top of their health and get an annual PSA screening test,” says Emily. “It’s a simple blood test that can save lives. There are often no symptoms in the early stages of prostate cancer, which is why yearly testing is so important. 24

ZERO offers critical patient L-R Emily Sybrant Midwest Chapter Director for ZERO, and programs to men Katie Krimmel, Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology and families who are going through their prostate cancer journey, from our ZERO360 patient navigator program to support programs like ZERO Mentor, ZERO Connect, and ZERO Caregiver.” PSA (prostate-specific antigen) is a protein produced by normal or malignant cells from the prostate gland. The PSA test measures the level of this protein in the bloodstream. The simple blood test is then sent to a lab for analysis. Katie plans to offer a free PSA clinic at the event on August 7th for any men who want to have their PSA checked. “Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology will run the labs for free and will contact the patient if levels are higher than normal,” says Katie. “This is a great opportunity for men who have never been checked before because it is completely free! The physicians at Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology are all strong advocates for prostate cancer awareness and for treatment that will benefit the patient in the best way possible. Our office also offers an advanced prostate clinic with a nurse navigator for those who are in advanced stages of prostate cancer.” “People like Katie, Kirk, the doctors, the patients, and the survivors inspire me every day to keep fighting to end prostate cancer,” Emily chimes in. “It’s events like these that bring awareness to early detection and to the community of support for prostate cancer patients and their loved ones. If you are a man, talk to your doctor about getting tested. If you are a woman, make sure that the men in your life know about early detection and the importance of staying on top of their health.” For more information about the 2021 ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk at Lake Zorinsky Park, visit zerocancerrun.org/omaha. Permanent Makeup Put Your Best Face Forward
By Loretta McCollum
We all want to look our best. Most of us use makeup to cover what we consider to be imperfections, to even out skin tone, or to add a little color. The problem is that putting on makeup takes so much of our precious time. What if you could have the polished look you want without the daily time commitment? Would you sleep a little longer? Would you have an extra cup of coffee? Would you finally have the time to exercise or meditate before you start your day? There are options out there that would allow you to do just that! I’m talking about permanent makeup, which can be a great way to restore a natural look and boost self-esteem. These processes are great for people with medical conditions like alopecia (hair loss on many parts of the body) that can lead to a lot of makeup prep time. They’re also a boon for people who have recently undergone a grueling treatment or surgery and need a little help to look and feel like themselves again. Permanent makeup is also an advantage for people who simply want to maintain a polished look without all the hassle of applying and reapplying makeup throughout the day. Permanent makeup application is much like getting a tattoo. Needles or rotary pen-like tools are used by licensed aestheticians or other trained professionals to insert pigment into the skin. It can also be applied by hand. With this method, the pigment is tapped into the skin with a small instrument that
resembles a utility knife but has needles instead of a blade. A topical anesthetic is commonly applied to minimize discomfort during the procedure. Though slight irritation may occur, you shouldn’t expect any dedicated downtime. Permanent makeup lasts up to five years with proper care, depending on the area of the application and the level of pigmentation applied. Occasional touch-ups may be needed. Be aware that sun exposure and exfoliating products will make the color fade faster. One of the most popular permanent makeup choices is eyeliner. We all know how difficult it can be to get that perfect outline—we’re lucky if we avoid poking ourselves in the eye! With permanent eyeliner, you can choose a natural or bolder look. A procedure known as “tightlining” adds pigment between the layers of lashes to darken the lash line for a very

natural look. The more traditional application (above the lash line) resembles liquid liner. Either procedure takes one or two hours, and you should avoid applying eye makeup and mascara for one week afterwards. Many people opt for eyelash extensions to match their permanent eyeliner. Lash extensions can be natural or synthetic. Natural fibers such as mink, sable, or silk look very realistic, but synthetic acrylic lashes may be a better choice for allergy sufferers. The initial application takes about two hours, and touch-ups are required every couple of weeks, depending on how quickly your natural lashes shed. It’s important to make sure that your technician uses a medical-grade glue with no formaldehyde. To extend the life of your lashes, avoid using oil-based eye products, cream-based eyeliners, and waterproof mascaras. To achieve the perfect brow, some of us turn to tweezers, pencils, or both. Many times, we end up with an exaggerated arch, making us look perpetually surprised. Microblading can provide a perfectly shaped brow by depositing pigment through tiny slices in the skin. People who have suburbanbridalomaha.com undergone treatments that result in hair loss often choose microblading to restore a natural look. Suburban Bridal.indd 1 Next, let’s talk lips. You line and define, then fill in with the perfect color, only to realize that a few sips of wine and a couple bites of steak later, you’re left with naked lips. Enter lip tattooing, a process in which a tool resembling a hand-held rotary pen injects pigment into the lips. Since lips are particularly sensitive, this procedure can be somewhat painful; topical numbing cream is applied prior to the procedure. The lips will typically appear quite dark at first, but the color will fade to a more natural look. Expect some swelling and chapping for the first few days following the procedure. Since the lips receive more wear and tear than other areas, results typically last only about 18 months. If permanent makeup sounds like a dream come true, ask your dermatologist about it. Some dermatologists do these procedures themselves; if yours doesn’t, ask for a recommendation for a cosmetologist or aesthetician who has been trained in the art of permanent makeup. Let the pros guide you through the process of putting your best face forward, any time of night or day. Sources for this article included: webmd. com, today.com, and permanent-line.com. Smart Home Technologies The Home of the Future is Here
By Robyn V. Powell
Thanks to the rapid transformation of home-based technologies, the smart home is no longer a futuristic concept—it’s the new reality. Smart home technology has made our homes more efficient, secure, and comfortable. Through innovative devices, our homes have become virtual hubs of hands-free functionality. By 2025, it’s estimated that there will be more than 70 million smart homes in the United States. What’s possible today and in the future may seem mind-boggling. In reality, transitioning to a smart home is surprisingly easy and affordable. What exactly is a smart home? A smart home enables household devices and appliances to be remotely controlled through an internet connection and a phone or tablet. A connected home enables homeowners to control lights, doorbells, thermostats, and window treatment functions from another room—or even from another country! Smart home technologies have evolved, with new generations of smart devices and appliances now able to connect with each other and with the cloud. This integration has launched the next level of seamless, convenient, and cost-saving functionality. For example, a smart front door lock can now automatically send a message to your thermostat to turn down the temperature every time you leave the house and lock the door—sending energy savings directly into your pocket. With so many smart home devices to choose from, how do you begin to incorporate devices into your existing home?
The growing demand for security and efficiency have made smart home features that improve safety and energy efficiency the most valued choices. Many people are finding that the best way to step into the new smart home world is to invest in a smart speaker. Like a phone, smart speakers come with a personal digital assistant—a voice that communicates audibly with the user and responds to voice commands. Voice assistants can make calls, send texts, look things up online, and get directions. Voice assistants can be quite useful on their own. When paired with compatible smart-home devices, they can be used in many new ways; for example, you can control lights without having to leave the comfort of your sofa or your bed. With the addition of separate phone apps, your voice can act as a remote control for your life—activating security systems, changing temperatures, adjusting window shades, and more.

If you’re simply looking to add some smarts to small appliances like coffee makers, lamps, and entertainment systems, installing smart plugs paired with apps or compatible with voice assistants can provide ultimate convenience. Arrive home and be greeted with ambient lighting, lowered shades, and your choice of music. Smart locks, doorbells, and security cameras offer peace of mind and convenience, while indoor cameras provide security and nanny services all in one device. Two-way communication allows you to listen or talk to your kids or pet and even dispense pet treats on demand! Smart thermostats that enable control of heating and cooling systems by phone or voice are ideal for travelers and second home owners. Setting temperature schedules and remotely monitoring energy consumption allow homeowners to come and go worry-free. Exciting new devices like robot vacuums and mops equipped with artificial intelligence and visual interpretation (AIVI) technology allow automated cleaning devices to identify and avoid obstacles. Voice-activated models with hybrid floor-cleaning options can take care of carpet and wood floors. Some even include features that allow you to watch the cleaning by video from wherever you happen to be! As smart home systems are more widely adopted, they are being factored into appraisals for home sales. Devices like smart thermostats, smart smoke detectors, and home security systems not only increase a home’s value but may help sell it faster. Almost all new home construction includes some smart features. Factoring smart home features into a new build is no less important than installing quartz countertops in the kitchen or making sure you have a luxury master suite. Smart home features can be wireless or hardwired or a combination of both. Wireless systems are easier to install and more cost-friendly, especially in existing homes, where you can add a home automation system to control lights, blinds, and thermostats for several thousands of dollars. Hardwired systems are considered more reliable than internet reliant systems and are more difficult to hack. While hardwired systems add value to your home, they come with a higher price tag, in the tens of thousands. Smart home technology is definitely here to stay, and it’s growing quickly. Visiting your local home technology center is a great way to check out the options and learn more about how a smart home can improve the quality, safety, and convenience of your life. Acupuncture An Ancient Practice for a Healthier You!
By Leslie Byrne
For thousands of years, practitioners have been using forms of acupuncture to help people manage acute and chronic pain and disease. Of course, the past couple of centuries have produced an incredible number of life-changing and life-saving procedures, medicines, and treatment techniques for which we are all grateful. You have to admit, though—any technique that has stood the test of time the way that acupuncture has deserves a second look from even the most modern people! Acupuncture is a holistic, non-invasive procedure that involves very thin needles placed at strategic points on the body. The technique is currently an important part of traditional Chinese medicine practiced every day. In Western medicine, the technique is used somewhat differently. In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is used to balance the energy or life force, known as chi, that flows through pathways or meridians in the body. The needles are inserted at specific points along the body’s meridians. Originally, needles were made of stone or bone; throughout the years, the needles have been made of bronze, gold, and silver. Today, needles are made of stainless steel. In traditional Chinese medicine, this re-balancing is used most commonly to treat pain. Many Western acupuncturists turn to acupuncture to stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissue to boost the body’s natural ability to manage pain. It is also used for overall wellness and even stress management.
You have a
choice
Acupuncture is used to relieve chronic pain and to address a wide variety of painful issues such as arthritis, headaches, migraines, knee pain, menstrual cramps, and sports injuries. Patients undergoing cancer treatment may seek acupuncture to address the troublesome side effects of treatment. Women going through menopause may choose acupuncture to minimize the discomfort of hot flashes. Other people use acupuncture to help with immune system issues, irritable bowel syndrome, or pain from overuse or repetitive strain disorders. When needles are placed on any of the 14 major meridians, or energy channels, they stimulate the body to react, even if you can’t feel the needle. This reaction releases endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers. A first visit to an acupuncturist may be a little different than what you’ve experienced at other health care appointments. First, you will be asked about your health history, which is a pretty standard practice. Next comes something you may not have expected:
when it comes to
Cancer Care.

The practitioner will examine your tongue, evaluating its shape, color, and coating. This is a part of diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine. During the procedure itself, the patient lies down while the needles are strategically placed along specific meridian points. The needles used are sterile and as thin as a hair. Many patients report that they do not feel anything when the needles are inserted. Some report feeling a slight pinch or a dull ache or tingling. The needles are left in for five to 30 minutes. How frequently someone needs acupuncture treatment varies from person to person and depends on the issue being treated. Some people report immediate relief, while others need several visits over several months. Some, but not all, insurance plans cover acupuncture, so it is smart to check with your carrier and your practitioner beforehand. Acupuncture can be performed on someone as young as three months old, but most patients are adults. If you think acupuncture is right for you, look for a board-certified, licensed acupuncturist. As you would with any new health practitioner, ask plenty of questions! Where were they trained? How extensive was their training? How many years have they been in practice? What experience do they have in treating your specific ailment? If you are having trouble finding an experienced acupuncturist in your area, consider working with a chiropractor who has obtained the necessary training and certification to offer acupuncture as another form of treatment. This pairing is actually quite common. Although acupuncture and chiropractic are very different types of treatment, they are both forms of care that are non-invasive, drugfree, and promote whole-body healing while targeting specific injuries. Some people even find advantage in combining the two. Having an acupuncture treatment before a chiropractic adjustment can reduce inflammation and leave the muscles more relaxed, helping to provide a better response to the chiropractic treatment. Acupuncture can also help patients feel better and ease chronic pain between chiropractic treatments. For anyone looking to reduce chronic pain or stress or looking for a more holistic and non-invasive way to promote good health, maybe it’s time to try something that is not new at all but may be new to you! Become one of the countless people who have benefitted from acupuncture over the last 2,000 years. Find a practitioner today! Kindness. Is this a word that comes to our minds when we are describing our own attributes? Is this behavior at the top of our list of how we want to treat others? “Happiness is the new rich. Inner peace is the new success. Health is the new wealth. Kindness is the new cool.” —Syed Balkhi I saw this quote, and it was if it leaped from the page to grab my attention. Perhaps it is because I have witnessed such a lack of this behavior from people…including myself…over the last year. It was as if the pandemic gave everyone a free pass to leave kindness in the weeds. Drivers? Watch out…they are so rude. Customer service people on the phone, working from home? At times, extremely unprofessional. Trips to the grocery store? I often felt like I was heading onto a battlefield. “Believe there is good in the world.”—Unknown Toward the end of last year, I thought about it. I kept asking myself why this was happening. Why were people being so mean? What had caused me to become this person who was, at times, just not very nice? "Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible." —The Dalai Lama
And then, Christmas Eve happened. I had to pick up one last gift for our family Christmas get-together. I raced into the house, picked up the phone, and started looking for a store that had it in stock. One call. Two calls. Three calls. Then, my husband, Manny, said something that stopped me in my tracks. “You are being rude to those people,” he said. It shocked me. I hadn't even realized it. As I stopped, took a big breath, and reflected, I saw that he was so very right. Ouch! It was as if I thought I was invisible. I could pretend that it wasn’t really a human being on the other end of the line. As the months have progressed, I have found myself in similar situations—multiple prompts on voicemail, transferred from one person to another, until I finally get to the department that can help me. What has changed is that I now remember Christmas Eve. I now realize that in that department is a human being that I’m talking with. I now make the decision to be kind….even when the other person is having a really, really bad day. “Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make, makes you. Choose wisely.” —Roy T. Bennett Thank you, Manny, for bringing it to my attention.

Kids Comments
It’s Not Easy Being Dad A Joyful Responsibility
By Marge Shoemaker
Traditionally, Dads were the breadwinners in the family, earning enough to pay for the needs of his family and their activities, while Moms took take care of the house and the kids. Traditionally, Dads were at work all day. Moms were at home, doing what Moms do…and if they weren’t at home, they were attending some function or meeting that had to do with the kids. I’ve known dads who expected dinner on the table promptly when they got home from work. Fortunately, the dads in my family weren’t like that. My dad worked long hours. Although he was often gone for days at a time, he was usually home on weekends. He often took me with him when he’d go into the office on a Saturday morning. I’d sit at an empty desk, drawing or reading while he worked. I got to meet some of his coworkers that way and developed an idea of what his work entailed. How roles have changed! In many families, both parents work outside the home. In the case of single parents, Mom or Dad shoulders all the responsibility—cooking, cleaning, reading bedtimes stories, sewing on uniform patches, getting the kids to their activities, and everything else. The Female Presence is predominant for most kids; while growing up, the adults that kids interact with most are often female. In recent generations, dads are stepping up to be a
stronger Male Presence in their kids’ lives. When our grandsons would visit, we made sure they spent as much time with Grandpa and the uncles as they did with Grandma and the aunts. They saw us helping each other, doing whatever work was necessary. The men in our family know how to cook. Nuking a hot dog in the microwave is as important as being able to make an apple pie! They take care of themselves. The men in our family know how to run a vacuum and do laundry. Tasks aren’t specified by gender…if there’s a job to do, the person available does it. They’ve learned it’s okay for men and boys to be gentle, good men who respect women, and how to be “tough” without being a bully or losing respect. We call our home a “peaceful place” where everyone is safe. We respect each other, even though we may disagree. We set the example that anger is an honest feeling, but it’s necessary to find a safe way to deal with it. Basically, the men tried to show the boys that they are people, too. We all have emotions. It’s okay to be sad, angry, joyful, envious, disappointed…or any other emotion they might feel. There are times to laugh, cry, love, or be joyful. It’s called being human. Being a dad is a joyful responsibility. Happy Father’s Day!

Omaha Face: Plastic Surgery and Medspa Where You’re a Person, Not a Procedure
By Maria Harding
Potential patients who enter Omaha Face expecting to encounter a sterile or clinical environment are pleasantly surprised by a feeling of coziness and familiarity. Owner and surgeon Dr. John Harbison notes that this is by design.“It has a boutique kind of feel,”he says.“We started small, and we’ve kept it small. We don’t want to deal in volume and lose that personal touch.” Dr. Harbison’s credentials are second to none. Because he is a younger surgeon, all of his training has utilized the most state-of-the-art techniques and approaches. I asked him to explain these techniques in more detail. “The biggest advent in facial rejuvenation has been our appreciation of the deep muscular layers of the face,” he explains. “That leads to a longer lasting and more natural result. I’m able to merge my contemporary training with a great amount of personal experience to get to the best possible results.” That modernity extends to his attitude toward aesthetics. Dr. Harbison’s approach is not to change his patients’
faces but to enhance their natural beauty. He Dr. John Harbison has even dissuaded some patients from having surgery when he felt it would not be in their best interest. “That happens all the time!” he shares. “People come in with inspirational photos of models, and I tell them they have to stop looking at other people’s noses; we’re going to be doing a procedure on your nose. I think it’s important to share what is going to

look realistic and tasteful.” At his practice, they shun the idea of a one-size-fits-all standard of beauty. All faces carry their own nobility. The surgical approach at Omaha Face results in natural, finely tuned features. Dr. Harbison’s early clinical experience included trauma and reconstructive surgery for the head and neck at the University of Kansas Medical Center, as well as an internship in the prestigious program at the University of California—Irvine. Though his practice is now exclusively plastic surgery, he’s glad to have had a background in trauma procedures. “I think it made me a better surgeon,” he shares. “While I liked all aspects of head and neck surgery, plastic surgery gives me an opportunity to spend more time with each of my patients. It leads to a deeper interaction.” Patients love the atmosphere and the results at Omaha Face. Patient J.K. shares, “I felt so at ease, as he took the time to answer my questions. I feel 10 years younger. Best gift I could give to myself.” Dozens of similarly glowing testimonials can be found at realself.com, a forum for online reviews. On the practice’s own website, omahaface.com, the gallery of before and after photos speaks for itself. Recovery from plastic surgery takes less time than you might think. “Though it’s procedurally dependent, somewhere between one to three weeks is kind of typical,” Dr. Harbison clarifies. “For ‘aging face’ procedures, I generally tell people they’ll be ‘restaurant-ready’ in two weeks and ‘wedding-ready’ in two months.” Omaha Face offers a wide selection of surgical options for the face and neck, including rhinoplasty (noses),
Community Service Half BW.indd 1
otoplasty (ears), face and brow lifts, chin and jaw shaping, and much more. When asked what lesser-known treatments he finds to be remarkably impactful, Dr. Harbison says, “I would say radiofrequency, either delivering it in a minimally invasive surgery, where we go just under the skin, or even topically, to do a little bit of skin tightening. It gets good results without much downtime.” He admits that it does have limitations, and adds, “I would say it’s best for early changes. After about age 55, we’re probably not in the non-invasive category.” There still tends to be a stigma around having cosmetic surgery. Patients sometimes go out of their way to avoid being “found out.” Dr. Harbison has a unique theory about this attitude. “I think part of it is that, unfortunately, overdone plastic surgery is out there, and people are afraid to be associated with that type of bad result,” he reasons. “But medicine has progressed so much that we can do it well, and when it’s done well, it’s empowering.” At Omaha Face, you will be supported at every step during the process, from consultation to recovery and beyond. Dr. John Harbison knows how important his work is, and how personal. “Our face is part of our psyche,” he concludes. “It’s how we present ourselves in society. It’s a huge part of who we are as human beings.” He and his team don’t want to mask your beauty; they want to help you be your best, most confident self. Omaha Face is located at 17837 Burke Street, Suite 101, in Omaha. To reach Dr. Harbison and his team, please call 402-739-8144 or visit omahaface.com.

Focus on Finance
The Internet Investor Version 3: The Engaged Investor By George Morgan
This month’s column is the last in our three-part series on internet investor personalities. First, we discussed defensive investors, who are willing to accept minimal investment returns in exchange for maximum stability. They further wish to minimize the amount of time and effort they devote to managing their accounts. Next, we took a look at involved investors, who seek reasonable returns and wish to be personally involved in the investment process with the assistance of financial professionals. This month, our focus will be on the engaged investor, who desires to construct and direct an investment strategy with minimal outside assistance. While many would characterize the engaged investor as more aggressive than the others we have discussed, this is not necessarily the case. They are indeed more involved than the other two types of internet investors, but their expectations concerning their investment return is often closely in line with those of the involved investor. What sets engaged investors apart is their willingness and ability to devote more time and effort to the process than the other types of investors we have discussed. Many engaged investors are fascinated with Wall Street, and some of their desire to take charge of their investments comes from a curiosity about how the market operates. Because they are more engaged in the process, they are generally more active in adjusting their portfolios in response to short-term changes in the market. American investors currently have over $10 trillion invested with online brokers. About 90 percent of that total is in self-directed retirement accounts such as 401(k)s and IRA rollovers. The zero-percent commissions offered by online brokers, coupled with the tax-sheltered attributes of these accounts, allow engaged investors to trade freely without transaction costs that would have a negative impact on their investment return. This does not mean that all engaged investors are the wild “day traders” often panned by the popular media. It just means they can employ a strategy free from outside considerations. There is one major caveat: People with investments in 401(k)s are limited by the investment menus provided by their employers. This often limits them to a small sampling of actively managed mutual funds and only occasional access to index fund alternatives with wider trading options. Those with rollover IRAs have the entire investment world open to them—their imaginations and investments are free to roam. Defensive and involved investors utilize a mix of full-service brokers and online discount brokers. Engaged investors, on the other hand, seldom use a full-service broker. With discount brokers, engaged investors are free to operate without any direction from the firm. Because engaged investors make all their own decisions and executions, they don’t want to pay the fees that full-service brokers charge for advice and trades. Seldom, if ever, will you find members of our first two groups buying and trading individual stocks. While not all 42
June 2021
engaged investors invest in individual stocks, they are many who do…and those who do are passionate about their activity. This is particularly true of engaged investors who have tax-advantage accounts at a discount broker. The issue of monitoring investment performance is an area in which our three investment personalities vary significantly. Defensive investors seldom look at their returns and are reasonably content as long as they are not losing money. Involved investors look at their performance on an irregular basis. Their evaluation of their performance is usually based on the broad perception of the overall market that they get from the evening news. Engaged investors are acutely aware of their performance and usually measure their success by comparing their returns to a specific market index or group of indexes. In most cases, the indexes of choice are the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500, and the Russell 2000. Over the course of the last three months, we have discussed the financial and psychological profiles of three types of internet investors. While all take different paths to achieve their investment goals, it is impossible to categorize them by gender, financial situation, age, or any other demographic. It is important to understand that no investor profile is inherently better than the others. Identifying with an investor profile that suits your current situation is not a lifelong commitment. Should you experience a significant change in your financial situation, you need to reevaluate your investment strategy and make the appropriate adjustments. The bottom line is to begin with a bit of homework to find the investment strategy that describes you. Once you’re comfortable with your own investment personality, it’s easy to start on an investment path that will fit you and your lifestyle. Editor’s Note: Professor Morgan has over 40 years’ experience in the investment field, both as a university professor and as a financial advisor. He currently serves on the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he directs a program designed to educate 401(k) plan participants on how to improve their investment strategy. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. To determine which investments may be appropriate for you, consult your financial advisor prior to investing.

The Chimney Doctor “For A Good Night’s Sweep!”
By Marge Shoemaker
Nebraska has just come through one of the roughest, coldest winters in its recorded history. Many folks experienced temperatures well below zero and shoveled snow more than two feet deep. Mother Nature provided the perfect weather for curling up in front of your fireplace and enjoying a nice, warm evening…unless the chimney doesn’t draw properly and you get smoked out. That’s when you need to call The Chimney Doctor.
Randall (Randy) aka “Sooty” Redding, the owner, operator, and certified chimney professional, started The Chimney Doctor more than 31 years ago. “It all began when I was on active duty in the Air Force, stationed at Andrews Air Force in Maryland.” Randy explains. “My son, Brett played t-ball and the coach and team sponsor was the owner of Magic Broom Chimney Sweep. He offered to teach me the business, and I liked the work.” Randy went on to say, “while still in the service I worked part-time for Wesley Adams, the owner of Clinton Fence. Wes showed me the benefits of entrepreneurism. He taught me to be committed to customer service and to take care of my employees, treating others as I wanted to be treated.” Randy explained that after he left the Air Force he started The Chimney Doctor in January 1990. “The first thing we do on any job,” Randy explains, “is a level I inspection of the chimney to identify any possible problems and to determine what scope of work needs to be done.” Another step includes a level II inspection of scanning the inside of the chimney flue with a video camera. This provides a picture of the flue, exposing any cracks or damage that should be repaired to bring the chimney back into safe working condition, according to industry standards. The chimney for a wood-burning fireplace is cleaned using rotary brushes and a vacuum equipped with a filter to contain microscopic contaminants. The fireplace’s surrounding area is protected with drop clothes to catch dislodged dust and soot. In addition our technicians wear booties over their shoes to make as little mess as possible. “It’s a dirty job,” Randy comments. “We do our level best to avoid damage to your property.” The less sooty jobs are gas fireplaces, which are usually direct-vented through a venting chimney that resembles a dryer vent. Ventless fireplaces with vent-free gas logs burn almost 99 percent pure, using oxygen from the home. The Chimney Doctors will inspect the masonry and if necessary, will repair or replace minor masonry damage, including replacing damaged concrete crowns and waterproofing the chimney. They can also tuck-point the firebox and install top sealing dampers and caps. If damage is
L-R: Kyle Redding, nephew; Brandon Redding, son; indicated by the video Lena Redding, Office Mgr.; Randall Redding, Owner scan, they can reline your chimney. Not every call to The Chimney Doctor needs to be an emergency. “I encourage my clients to be proactive,” Randy says, “and to take steps to avoid a possible catastrophe. “It’s important to keep your chimney and fireplace clean and to avoid burning soft, carbon-producing materials. No trash, please!” Scrap wood is usually treated or painted; burning it will release chemicals that can be harmful to breathe. Anyone with a wood-burning fireplace should have it inspected once a year. In fact, Randy points out, twice-yearly inspections are mandated by law in Europe. If you don’t use your fireplace often, your chimney may not need to be cleaned at every annual inspection. The Chimney Doctor also cleans and inspects wood-burning stoves, dryer vents, and gutters. “We don’t have a problem getting on your roof…unless it’s snow-covered,” Randy says with a smile. They also do real estate inspections. “Whether you’re buying or selling, have the fireplace and chimney inspected by a certified chimney professional before the sale or transfer of property,” Randy advises. “Know what you’re getting into.” Jim L., a pleased customer, writes, “I started a fire in the wood-burning furnace this evening. WOW! What a tremendous difference! The smoke went up the firebox instead of ‘belching’ out into my face. I’m thrilled with the transformation. When I checked, the damper was at the proper position, letting additional air mix in and letting it go up the chimney.” The Chimney Doctor is a family operation. Randy’s son, Brandon and nephew Kyle are also certified chimney professionals. Randy’s wife, Lena, is the office manager and vice president of the corporation. The business holds memberships in the Better Business Bureau, the Chimney Safety Institute of America, and the National Chimney Sweep Guild. They are certified and insured. They service the Lincoln area and “nearly anywhere within a 60-mile radius.”You can reach them by phone at 402-719-7374, find them online at thechimneydoctorne.com, or send them a message at reddawgenterprisesinc@gmail.com.

Theme Gardens Shop in Your Own Backyard
By Linda Sutherland
Theme gardens are all the rage right now! Never heard that term? Theme gardens are a small plot of soil or raised bed (that would be my choice) in which you plant all the splendid ingredients you need to cause a fresh flavor explosion in one of your family’s favorite recipes. You still have time to plant a scrumptious garden with all the fresh produce you need to prepare your favorite foods! One of the best loved and most planted theme gardens is the salsa garden. Personally, I don’t think you can beat fresh, crunchy salsa. To extend your salsa garden bounty, you can also cook it and can it. First and foremost, wherever you plant these spicy vegetables, they must get at least six hours of sun per day. A 4x4 plot is more than enough to raise all the good stuff. Divide your bed into about one-foot sections so it will be easy to map out your growing area. If container gardening is more your style, feel free to plant in pots! You will need to plant tomatoes with a trellis or a cage to hold them up. Three tomato plants should do the trick. Sweet red onions would be a delightful addition to salsa, but you can really plant any kind of onion you want. For a more adventurous salsa, shallots or scallions would also be
appropriate to plant. Garlic is an optional ingredient but also a versatile one, and it’s easy to grow. I love to put tomatillos in my salsa. If you do, too, keep in mind that you’ll need two tomatillo plants for cross-pollination. Next is the ever-popular cilantro. This gorgeous leaf needs to be well watered. Even if you’re doing an in-ground or raised bed salsa garden, consider planting cilantro in a pot. If the hot summer sun gets to be too much for it, it can go in the shade once it is established. Start with two plants to get a nice harvest. Of course, peppers are the main event in salsa, and you have a myriad to choose from. My go-to for salsa is jalapeños, but you can use sweet or hot or both. Anaheim is a milder pepper, and serrano peppers are at the hot end of the temperature spectrum.

Thai food is aromatic and delicious. You can plant a Thai spice garden to enjoy all summer long. Just imagine yourself creating delicious, mouth-watering Thai dishes at home by “shopping” for spices in your own homegrown garden. Thai basil is used frequently in Thai cooking and is easy to grow. Cilantro is also lovely in Thai dishes (you may also see it referred to as coriander, which is the name of the cilantro seed). A curry plant is a wonderful addition to a Thai garden, but if nights get cool, you may have to cover it from time to time. Chile is a must-have for Thai cooking, as are lemongrass and, of course, garlic. I would include some rosemary and thyme in a Thai garden, as well. Honestly, I will use rosemary in just about any type of cooking—I even use it in bouquets! It is by far my favorite herb. I also love to cook and eat Italian food, but it occurred to me only recently that I could plant a pizza garden. First, you need tomatoes. Roma tomatoes are best for this type of garden and have lots of flavor. Oregano and basil are easy to grow and are almost mandatory for any pizza dish. You will need onions (again, whatever type you prefer). Onions really can be planted in any type of theme garden because onions go with just about everything! Then, there are the peppers—usually sweet, for pizza. Banana peppers have a tangy but mild taste. Bell peppers come with lots of flavor and in a rainbow of colors. They can be orange, green, red, purple, or yellow. This makes a pizza garden one of the most beautifully colorful theme gardens! I have even seen people plant a pizza garden in a round shape and plant each plant variety in one of the “slices.” Any of the pizza garden ingredients would be a nice addition to numerous pasta sauces, not to mention chili, if you’re looking ahead to delicious dinners for cooler weather. It took me some time to realize how much more delicious my food can be when I use fresh vegetables and herbs instead of canned or processed ones. Plus, I can make fewer trips to the grocery store, and I get the satisfaction of creating food from start to finish. There’s really no reason not to plant a theme garden this year! Seasons of Life
Memory Loss Care, Treatment, and Hope
By Linda Barnes
More than 6 million Americans, 65 and older, are living with Alzheimer’s disease. Women make up two thirds of those cases. Researchers are working tirelessly to find better treatments and, eventually, a cure for this progressive form of dementia. While they do, many families are struggling to meet the caregiving challenge. Dementia is a category of diseases that is often associated with memory, thinking, and behavior issues. Some forms are caused by brain injury or other diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, but Alzheimer’s is the most prevalent form of dementia. It is related to certain changes that have been identified within the brain. Early diagnosis is crucial because treatment varies depending on the specific form of dementia. Physical and neurological exams, mental status tests, laboratory tests, and imaging can help determine what may be causing memory and cognitive issues. Alzheimer’s has typically been more difficult to diagnose, but doctors have better testing now, including imaging such as brain amyloid PET scans. Symptoms may include memory problems, difficulty with familiar tasks, trouble speaking or writing, disorientation, poor personal hygiene, or mood changes. Judgment may decrease and social situations may be avoided. People may display an inability to solve problems. The progression may be relatively slow. If early to moderate stage Alzheimer’s is diagnosed, doctors can prescribe medications such as Aricept or Namenda that may help boost memory by maintaining a high level of neurotransmitters in the brain. In moderate to severe stages, other prescription
46 Brookstone Village.indd 1
June 2021
meds are indicated. In addition, the doctor may prescribe antidepressants or other medications to help relieve related symptoms. Different stages of dementia require specific levels of support or care. During early stage, a care partner might help with remembering appointments, finances, transportation, managing meds, and recalling names or words. Moderate stages require a greater level of care. Difficulty expressing thoughts and performing routine tasks is common. Safety is a greater concern and it is no longer advisable to drive. Behavior may change and living alone may no longer be an option. Help with eating, dressing, and grooming is needed. Care partners may need assistance or regular breaks as the demands grow. A residential care setting may be considered. Late stage requires 24/7 care. Difficulty eating or swallowing is common. Assistance with walking and personal care is needed. Infections are concerning. Medications must be monitored. Needs often exceed what can be given at home. Explore residential care options carefully for the best solution. Residential memory care has many advantages, whether a stand-alone facility or a separate wing or floor of a long-term care facility. Either way, residents benefit from round-the-clock care

10/5/20 9:52 AM
www.womensedition.com
from professionals who are specially trained in memory care. Maintaining quality of life is a high priority. Memory care facilities provide necessities such as meals, laundry, and housekeeping. In addition, residents can access specialized medical care and planned activities. Therapies and a high level of assistance are pluses. Safety features are designed to prevent injuries and may include alarms on exterior doors or bracelets worn by residents. Finding the best residential care can be time-consuming. Fortunately, online resources can help. Type in “memory care” and your zip code. Medicare.gov rates long-term care facilities with a star system, so it’s easy to compare at a glance. Besides getting recommendations from doctors and friends, it’s important to visit facilities in person. On your tour, observe whether staff members show respect for residents. Note the cleanliness and degree of maintenance. Ask about staff training and the ratio of staff to residents—both daytime and nighttime. Who is their visiting physician? How often will family meet with staff? What activities and therapies are available? Studies have found that those with memory loss often do better in a specialized residential memory care setting. They have fewer falls or injuries and better medical care. Dementia progression is sometimes slowed in a setting designed with the needs of the residents in mind. Though Alzheimer’s does not have a cure right now, and available medications only provide some relief from symptoms, there is much optimism. A blood test is being developed that can determine whether a person’s dementia is caused by Alzheimer’s. If it were able to do this years before any symptoms appear, that would be game-changing for diagnosis and early treatment. Other research has shown a positive effect in reduced Alzheimer’s in seniors who have received vaccines for flu and pneumonia. Monoclonal antibodies are being investigated as a treatment. Additional research focuses on genetics and new drug treatments. Researchers are also looking at the preventive effects of healthy lifestyle (no smoking, regular exercise, wholesome diet, antioxidants, maintaining an active social life) on dementia and Alzheimer’s. There is hope! Sources for this article included: aarp. org, alz.org. healthline.com, medicare.gov, and nia.nih.gov.

Low Testosterone Levels in Men Symptoms, Solutions, and Sympathy
By Maria Harding
Many women are natural caregivers and sources of strength for their families. When a loved one is suffering, we are compelled to offer support. This role becomes more complicated when men in our lives are suffering from impotence, loss of hair, mood swings—all signs of decreased testosterone levels. There is a lingering misconception that men opening up about these concerns is a sign of weakness. We don’t want to embarrass the men we love, and so we say nothing. Testosterone is a hormone that is produced in the testicles, it influences men’s gender expression in appearance, sex drive, and bone and muscle density. Low testosterone levels affect 20 percent of men older than 60 years and one third of men over 70. It is two to three times more common in men who have diabetes or are overweight, even at younger ages. If a testicle has been damaged or removed, this can also affect testosterone levels in the body. Symptoms vary but can include decreased libido or inability to maintain an erection, hair loss, fatigue, mood swings, increased body fat, anemia, and memory issues. A doctor can check testosterone levels through a simple blood test. Because testosterone levels decrease throughout the day, blood will likely be drawn before noon. If low levels are detected, additional tests might be done to help determine the cause. In some cases, pituitary gland issues or tumors may explain low testosterone levels.

Some sources have likened low testosterone levels to menopause in women and have even termed this hormonal transition “male menopause.”This is an apt comparison in some ways and less apt in others. Unlike menopause, during which women experience a dramatic drop in hormone levels, men’s hormonal shifts happen gradually. This can make pinpointing the cause of body changes much more difficult. With menopause, women lose the ability to reproduce; men continue to produce sperm, even if their testosterone levels are low. One way to offer support to men in our lives who may be suffering from fluctuating testosterone levels is to maintain awareness of the biochemical impact it has on their energy and psyche. The mood swings that accompany ebbing testosterone can be hard on relationships. Be patient during periods of irritability or depression and avoid blaming yourself or each other. Enlist the help of an individual or couples therapist; sometimes, working through complicated emotions in a neutral location

can be the most productive. If handled with grace and honesty, navigating this difficult period can actually strengthen relationships. Another way to offer support is to share information about available treatments. Men will likely feel reassured to learn how common this issue is and how treatable. Begin by talking with a physician about testosterone replacement therapy. A primary care physician may prescribe a therapy regimen or may direct you to a urologist. Testosterone treatments are administered in various ways. There are superficial skin patches, pellets that are placed under the skin, sublingual tabs, nasal sprays, and injections. All are equally effective. It is important that other members of the family do not come into contact with skin that has been treated, as their health may be adversely affected by exposure. The doctor will discuss any risks associated with hormone therapy, such as increased vulnerability to heart disease and stroke. Men can expect frequent appointments if they begin a testosterone treatment regimen. Medical research is inconclusive about the risks associated with testosterone therapy, but responsible doctors will closely monitor the efficacy of the therapy to make sure that normalizing the testosterone levels does, in fact, alleviate symptoms. The doctor will also watch for changes in hemoglobin levels, to check for thickening of the blood. There are some natural ways to boost testosterone levels, like increasing physical activity and losing weight. Encouraging your partner to go for a walk together can be a proactive way to break through mood slumps, as it augments not only testosterone production but also dopamine and serotonin levels. Making time for sufficient sleep has proven to elevate testosterone levels, particularly in younger men. Some studies suggest that inadequate length or quality of sleep can “age” a man’s testosterone numbers by 10 or 15 years. Some over-the-counter products claim to contain or boost testosterone levels, but beware of false claims. Only a doctor can administer true testosterone therapy. It’s important to remember that every body is different; symptoms may be dramatically changed, moderately eased, or unaffected by either natural or pharmaceutical approaches. Ultimately, we will not be hurting the men in our lives if we can help guide them toward solutions. Rising above feelings of awkwardness and having a compassionate conversation may lead to life-enriching changes. Sources for this article included: healthline.com, urologyhealth.org, and hormone.org. Summer will be upon us any minute, and I think we could all use a change of scenery! Many people are planning road trips this summer as a lower-stress and more flexible alternative to flying. Earthly Beauty Caring for Your Skin and the Earth
By Angella A. Arndt
How much do you know about the products you use in your daily skin care routine? Do you know what is in those products? Do you know how they were manufactured? You might be surprised to learn that many skin care products contain ingredients that are potentially harmful to your health. There is a growing trend toward sustainable, non-toxic skin care. If you’d like to find responsibly sourced products made of natural ingredients, visit Earthly Beauty. Earthly Beauty opened its doors in Omaha’s Rockbrook Village in February of 2019. Founder and owner Karen Carroll became a licensed cosmetologist and worked as an esthetician before earning a bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. “I combined my esthetics knowledge and experience with my environmental science education,” Karen recalls. “I found that many skin care products can be toxic and that the industry is not well regulated.” Karen opted for a career change to pursue her passion for providing responsibly produced and sourced products, and Earthly Beauty was born. All products carried by the shop follow the principles of sustainability and are non-toxic and cruelty-free. Karen selects products that are transparent with respect to their ingredients, sourcing, and manufacturing. She notes that some of the larger manufacturers are making changes to their packaging but not their ingredients or testing practices. “I look at every ingredient and vet my products,” she asserts. “That’s why we don’t carry some of the larger brand names.”The companies that she chooses “do no harm” to consumers, the environment, or animals. Most of the products are vegan, with a few exceptions, like beeswax, honey, and humanely and sustainably produced goat’s milk. The shop carries a wide variety of facial and skin care products for both men and women. There is a tantalizing selection of scented and unscented soaps, including goat’s milk soaps. You’ll also find apparel, accessories, and jewelry. Aromatherapy products, including candles, sprays, and essential oils, are available to promote relaxation and reduce stress. For new parents, there are several lines of baby and toddler products to protect their delicate skin. The shop also has seasonal and outdoor products such as sunblock and insect repellent. Any products may be bundled into customized kits or gift sets to meet your specific needs. Earthly Beauty was one of the first shops of its kind in Omaha, and Karen remains true to her vision, which she believes sets her apart from the competition. “My attention to detail in the ingredients list is essential. A lot of stores sell ‘green’ products that actually contain synthetic fragrances or ingredients that are harsh on your skin.” What exactly is the difference between “green” and “sustainable”? Being green generally means supporting
environmentalism, but Karen Carroll, Owner there aren’t any concrete rules governing the use of the term in marketing or practice. Sustainability goes to the next level, meaning products are made from renewable resources and do not harm the environment through the entire life cycle of the product. When shopping for sustainable products, look for transparency. “You should be able to look at an ingredient list and find information on those ingredients,” Karen advises. “Avoid anything that doesn’t list the ingredients or has synthetic fragrances.” Karen firmly believes that customers should be informed and knowledgeable about the products they use. “I’m not here just to sell products. I’m also here to educate and provide transparency. I will do everything I can to answer questions and find an appropriate product, if I have one, to meet the needs of my customers. Even with COVID, we are trying very hard to make sure people can sample products before they buy them.” Running a business with sustainable products has its challenges. Finding products without synthetic fragrances and that are not packaged in plastic can be difficult, Karen acknowledges. Why does packaging matter? “Plastic can leach into products, as well as being major problem for our waterways and oceans.” Additionally, since her store’s products do not contain preservatives, they have shorter shelf lives. Karen works with smaller vendors, many of whom support fair-trade practices and donate to charitable organizations. “It’s rewarding to find products that work for a customer,” Karen says. She enjoys meeting like-minded people who are concerned about the environment and want natural products. “If someone is interested in living a sustainable, non-toxic, and cruelty-free life, I can save them time and inform them about product choices. We’re here to care for the health of your skin.” Earthly Beauty is located at 10812 Elm Street, in Rockbrook Village, in Omaha. The shop is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. To learn more, call the shop at 402-281-0213 or find them online at earthlybeauty.com. Dog Training Learn to Work Together
By Jackie Byers
We have long understood that dogs descend from wolves. According to fossil evidence, man and wolf/dog got together 20,000 to 40,000 years ago. Through centuries of acclimation, supervised breeding, and fewer DNA exchanges with wolves, the modern dogs emerged, eager and able to become man’s best friend. Today, hundreds of dog breeds and designer dogs serve human needs in many ways. Their keen senses of smell (50 times better than ours) and hearing (more than twice as good as ours) make them able to render all sorts of services. They also have a wider field of vision than humans and, thus, more peripheral awareness. Now fully domesticated, dogs can be trained for multiple roles in humans’ lives. Dogs’ services to humans are as varied as the breeds: pets, herders, hunters, K-9 corps for army and law enforcement, and service dogs, invaluable to humans who face life challenges. Dogs are quite adaptable, but certain breeds do generally excel at certain tasks. Labrador retrievers, German shepherds, and poodles are known
for learning easily. The Labrador perennially wins the American Kennel Club’s popularity contest. No matter what life lies ahead for a dog, training begins with trust between master and dog. Kindness and rewards are the keys. Whether puppy or mature, dogs will respond to the right stimuli. Training can begin immediately with a puppy or a mature dog. It requires a small bit of a treat, as well as lots of praise and petting. The first three commands are come, sit, and stay. Always use one-word commands.

Give a command only once. Offer the treat; then turn to petting and praise. Eventually, you can eliminate the treat, but never stop offering petting and praise. Once a dog has mastered the three basic commands, it can be trained for different purposes, each of which has a different time frame. Puppies’ training may last a year. Hunting dogs usually board for weeks and field train longer. Service dogs may take six months or more to learn their particular skills. They are specially trained to meet their future master’s challenges. The dog is trained before it meets the master. If the dog is to be a family pet, the choice should be made carefully. The American Kennel Club has a helpful website. It provides profiles of many breeds, including details like size, weight, life expectancy, common personalities, and strengths. Meeting potential pets in person will let you see how they might fit in with your family. No matter where you get your dog, you will need to find a veterinarian. Dogs need examinations, shots, tags, and food recommendations. You need trustworthy answers to your questions about your dog’s health and training. General equipment includes a food and water dish, collar, leash, some chew toys, and a carrier, which can double as sleeping quarters. Look into pet insurance—dogs’ medical needs can be expensive. Because you want a solid foundation for your life with your pet, training is best done in short stages, several times daily. Train throughout the house and involve all family members in the process. If your pet forgets, simply begin again. Remember how many times you had to tell your child
A Few Words From One of Our Advertisers: “We have gotten a ton of business from our advertising with Women’s Edition. It’s insane the number of calls we get from the ad. to wash hands or say thank you? Puppies learn like children. Mature pets can be trained following the same system. If you need help with training, your vet is always a reliable source. Help is also available at animal shelters or rescues. Hunting dogs are also companions and require a more intense commitment, beginning with the same basic commands. Building trust between the dog and owner is vital. For hunting dogs, the owner also requires training. Initially, hunting dogs may be boarded for several weeks before field conditioning with the owner. If you expect the dog to hunt with you, you are a key part of the training. Your vet can guide your search for a trainer or boarding kennel. Many trainers for hire are online. Choose carefully, after in-person interviews and a tour of each facility. One of the most rapidly growing ways that dogs impact human lives is as service dogs. Service dogs help people with a wide variety of physical and emotional challenges, including visual impairment, Parkinson’s disease, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, autism, diabetes, and more. Training of service dogs is not done by the future owners. It takes six months after the individual in need applies. The individual’s particular challenges determine the training the dog receives. Certification happens at state and federal levels. Certified service dogs wear identifying vests and accompany their owners everywhere, giving owners a more normal life. No matter what a dog is trained to do, dog training is well worth the effort! Sources for this article included: akc.org, nehumanesociety. org, k94life.org, and workingservicedogs.com.

Planning a Nebraska Vacation Explore and Discover
By Angella A. Arndt
Summer is just around the corner, and you may be thinking about planning a vacation. A road trip means no long airport lines, travel delays, or time constraints…but where will you go? Have you considered exploring Nebraska? Historical sites, natural attractions, camping, sports, and entertainment options abound, and you can explore at your leisure throughout the summer without even leaving the state. Bring history to life by visiting one of Nebraska’s fascinating historical sites. Chimney Rock, a natural geologic spire in Bayard, soars 325 feet from its base and was a famous landmark for pioneers traveling along the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails. One of the largest military installations of the northern plains, Fort Robinson, operated until after World War II in Crawford. In the summer months, the Fort Robinson park offers horse-drawn tours and stagecoach rides by reservation. The Thomas P. Kennard State Historic Site is Lincoln’s oldest remaining building on the original plat. Since Nebraska’s centennial in 1967, it has served as the Nebraska Statehood Memorial, restored and furnished to represent life in Nebraska in 1867. The National Willa Cather Center, in Red Cloud, honors the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, who spent her formative years in Nebraska and brought the state to life in many of her novels. The Nebraska Sandhills comprise the largest sand dune formation in the western hemisphere and one of the largest grass-stabilized dune areas in the world. The dunes were formed after the last ice age by sand and silt carried through melting glacial waters from the Rocky Mountains to central Nebraska. Experience the beauty of this region by traveling along the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway, spanning 272 miles from Grand Island to Alliance. In the Sandhills each spring, one of earth’s greatest migrations occurs when about 80 percent of the world’s crane population migrates to the Platte River Valley as they make their way north. Something to consider for next year: You can view this migration in person outside of Kearney, by guided tour or from a public viewing location. Check out visitkearney.org. Nebraska’s diverse landscape encompasses prairies, pine forests, grasslands, wetlands, and more than 23,000 miles of rivers and streams. Eight state parks provide opportunities to camp, enjoy wildlife, and pursue outdoor activities. Indian Cave State Park, in Shubert, is known for its sandstone cave containing prehistoric petroglyphs. Ponca State Park, in northeastern Nebraska, is one of the state’s most popular parks, known for its scenic views, forested hills, and wildlife viewing. Smith Falls State Park, in Valentine, boasts Nebraska’s highest waterfall. If you’re looking for a water vacation, visit one of Nebraska’s more than two dozen natural and 56

man-made lakes. Most lakes are open for boating, water sports, and fishing. Lake McConaughy, the state’s biggest lake (at 30,500 acres), is located a just few miles northeast of Ogallala. Although Nebraska isn’t known as wine country, grapes have been grown here since the 1800s. Nebraska has approximately 30 wineries and tasting rooms where visitors can enjoy beautiful views and sample distinctive wines. The Nebraska Winery and Grape Growers Association offers a Wine Passport program that provides information on wineries to visit. Those looking for a golf outing can choose from over 200 golf courses across the state. The Prairie Club Dunes Course, in Valentine, is ranked among GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Courses in the United States. Sand Hills Golf Club, in Mullen, is ranked as one of GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Courses in the World. Nebraskans love Cornhusker football, but it’s not the only game in town. Omaha draws tens of thousands of visitors each for several significant sporting events, including the College World Series, NAIA National Basketball Tourney, NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Final Four, U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Swimming, and U.S. Olympic Curling Trials. Omaha’s entertainment districts gear up for sports fans every year! Nebraska offers excellent entertainment options. Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo is consistently ranked as one of the world’s best. According to National Geographic, Lincoln’s Sunken Gardens is ranked among the “300 Best Gardens to visit in the United States and Canada.” Nebraska City boasts the most museums per capita in the nation, with 7,200 residents and 10 museums, including the Kregel Windmill Factory Museum and the Nebraska City Museum of Firefighting. Five Rocks Amphitheater, in Gering, hosts a summer concert series featuring jazz, blues, and rock music. These are just samples of the kind of entertainment you’ll find in your travels across Nebraska. Hop in the car and immerse yourself in the great outdoors, arts and culture, and adventures across the state. You’ll discover a whole new side of Nebraska and make memories along the way. Water and Fire Features The Final Touches in the Yard
By Anne Yankus
If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the past year, it’s that there’s no time like the present to make our homes and gardens beautiful and comfortable places to be. With the weather finally warming, now is the perfect time to add some finishing touches to your yard’s landscaping. Have you considered a water or fire feature to take your yard from pleasant to delightful? Installing one or more water features is a great way to stimulate visual interest and add a sense of peace and calm to your yard. Aside from just looking pretty, water features can increase the natural beauty of your landscape by attracting local wildlife like birds and butterflies. Features like fountains, waterfalls, and winding creeks are seeing a rise in popularity. Fountains may sound large and expensive, but they come in shapes and sizes that will accommodate any budget and complement whatever yard space you choose. If you like the sound of running water that a fountain brings but are looking for something that looks more natural, consider installing a small waterfall. Home and garden retailers have many prebuilt waterfall models to choose from. If none of them strike your fancy, you can hire a pro to design one that contours with the natural slope of your yard. For a less splashy alternative, consider a winding garden creek. Given their shape and size, creeks cannot typically be
purchased pre-built. With the guidance of a landscape designer or architect, you can design your own to add a completely unique water feature to your garden. What goes into having a water feature built and installed? Once you’ve created or contracted your design, you’ll want to look into whether you need a permit to build it. In some municipalities, water features that are deeper than 18 inches or that require any electrical or plumbing work will require a building permit. If you plan to have anything with running water, it will probably require a pump and filter, which will definitely require an electrical permit. Depending on what you’re having built, you’ll need to contact electricians, plumbers, and landscapers. If you’re planning something large and complicated, consider hiring a contractor to oversee the other specialists. Once everything is built, it’s time to turn an eye to yearly maintenance. As this last winter proved, it can freeze just

about anywhere in the country, so winterizing your water feature is a must. You can do this by shutting down your water pump and storing it submerged in a bucket of water in a frost-free location. If you’d prefer to keep your feature running through the winter, you can accomplish this by purchasing a floating de-icer, which is controlled by a thermostat and only runs when the water is at or below freezing. Just like a natural river, any waterfall you wish to keep running through the winter will need to be regularly checked to keep ice dams from forming. Your water features aren’t the only things you’ll want to keep from freezing in your yard—what about keeping people warm? This is where fire pits and outdoor fireplaces come in. Fire pits come in a variety of styles and are powered by a number of different fuels. A freestanding, wood-burning fire pit can be purchased relatively cheaply at your local home and garden center. A more elaborate, built-in, above-ground or in-ground pit can be powered by wood, propane, or natural gas. Built-in fire pits are commonly constructed with bricks, stones, or concrete, and can even include matching benches or tables. Wood-burning pits are the simplest to build and are great for generating heat. Propane and natural gas pits are less portable and will require installation of piping and ignition parts, but what you lose in mobility you’ll make up in safety and ease of use. In contrast to the campfire-like ambience that a fire pit provides, outdoor fireplaces bring more of an outdoor room vibe. Unlike fire pits, fireplaces will direct heat toward you and smoke away through the chimney. They can take up less room on a patio and are generally safer, with less risk of fire spreading where you don’t want it. Depending on your city’s building codes, you may need a permit to build an outdoor fireplace. Like fire pits, they can be designed to burn wood or gas. With all the rules and regulations that come with building a fireplace, it’s important to hire a professional mason or fireplace expert. This year is the perfect time to add the finishing touches on your landscaping that will make it absolutely gorgeous and a comfortable place to be! Central Plains ENT & Audiology Health Solutions That Fit Your Lifestyle
By Angella A. Arndt
Do you suffer from itchy, watery eyes? Sneezing? A runny or congested nose? Do you have an unexplained rash or hives? If so, you may be experiencing allergy symptoms. Allergies appear when your body’s immune system overreacts to foreign substances such as tree and plant pollens, grasses, insect bites, mold, pet dander, or some foods. You don’t have to suffer! Whether you seek relief from allergies or another ear, nose, or throat issue, the team at Central Plains Ear, Nose, Throat & Audiology is ready to get you on the road to recovery. After years in academic and group private practices, Drs. Iris and Gary Moore founded Central Plains ENT & Audiology in 2002. Dr. Iris Moore treats general ear, nose, and throat problems, including sinus diseases, nasal issues, sleep apnea, and snoring. Dr. Gary Moore specializes in neurotology, the medical and surgical treatment of conditions that affect the balance system, inner ears, temporal bone, skull base, and related head and neck structures. The team also includes two doctors of audiology (AuD) who specialize in diagnosing and treating hearing loss and balance disorders. Many parts of the head and neck can be affected by allergens, Dr. Moore explains. Allergies may be accompanied by headaches or may lead to nasal congestion, sinus and ear infections, eustachian tube dysfunction, or even hearing loss. During an initial examination, patients are asked about their symptom history and receive a thorough physical exam. If warranted, x-rays are obtained. A comprehensive evaluation is performed to determine if any underlying problems are causing or contributing to the symptoms. Dr. Moore notes that listening to patients is crucial. “We obtain far more valuable information from a patient’s history than we would from just a physical exam. Listening to a patient provides important clues about the issues and helps us recommend the best treatment options.” Allergy tests are then performed to determine what is causing allergy symptoms. The most common type of allergy test is the skin prick test. A drop of allergen extract is placed on the skin, and a needle is used to prick the skin so a small amount of the extract can enter just below the skin’s surface. Approximately 15 minutes later, the skin is observed for signs of an allergic reaction, like redness or swelling. A blood test may be conducted to confirm skin test results or determine how much of an allergen-specific antibody is in the blood. After allergies are diagnosed, an individualized treatment plan is developed to determine the best course of therapy. Allergy treatment options include avoidance, medications, and allergen immunotherapy. 62

Avoidance means avoiding the allergens causing your symptoms. l-r: Krissa Downey, Many allergy symptoms are successfully treated Au.D, CCC-A; with over-the-counter or prescription drugs. Michael Grace, BC, HIS; Trish Morrow, AU.D; Allergen immunotherapy is a treatment option Gary Moore, MD, FACS; for individuals with respiratory allergies caused Iris Moore, MD, FACS; by things like pollen, mold, and animal dander. and Taylor Hepp, PA-C This treatment involves receiving either injections or sublingual drops (drops placed under the tongue). Allergy shots reduce allergen sensitivity and may provide lasting relief, even after treatment is completed. Allergy shots are usually recommended for patients whose allergy symptoms cannot be adequately treated with medication or for patients who are trying to avoid long-term use of medication. Central Plains ENT & Audiology partners with United Allergy Services to provide a personalized allergy shot treatment plan that patients can perform at home. “When patients are taught how to administer their own allergy shots, they can do it at home instead of coming into the office for each dose,” Dr. Moore notes. United Allergy Services trains patients on self-administering their shots and educates them on safety protocols before giving them their medication vials. Complications secondary to allergy symptoms, such as acute and chronic sinusitis or ear disease, may sometimes require surgical intervention. In addition to treating allergies, Central Plains ENT & Audiology treats the full spectrum of ear, nose, and throat issues, including balance disorders, hearing difficulties, sleep apnea, sinus diseases, thyroid diseases, nasal problems, and head and neck masses. Dr. Moore’s goal is to ensure that patients are provided with information and options regarding their care. “I give patients non-surgical and, if appropriate, surgical options so that they can make informed decisions about their treatment.” The Central Plains ENT & Audiology team strives to provide high-quality, patient-focused care in a welcoming and kind environment. “We are thorough in our approach and treat patients how we would like to be treated,” Dr. Moore concludes. “It’s rewarding to improve a patient’s health, well-being, and quality of life.” Central Plains Ear, Nose, Throat & Audiology is located at 8005 Farnam Drive, Suite 204, in Omaha. Positive Perspective
Keep Learning Keep Listening
By Janet Van deWalle
I have an idea for an interesting experiment. Next time that you are with a group of people, step back and become a “fly on the wall." Disengage yourself from the conversations that are going on and watch the interactions that are occurring among the different groups of people. It can be at your office, at a social get-together, or in a public place. Eavesdrop. Now, I realize that our mothers told us this is impolite, but I’m asking you to do it just this once, for a good reason. I am asking you to do it to learn about communication… specifically, about the art of listening. “The word LISTEN contains the same letters as the word SILENT.” —Alfred Brendel My best guess is that you will discover that most of us do a whole lot of talking and very little listening. If you can dedicate 15 to 20 minutes to this experiment, you will walk away amazed at the lack of true listening that goes on. “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” —Stephen R. Covey The next step to this experiment is a bit dicey. The next time you are in a group of people, or even having a one-on-one conversation with someone, check out your own listening skills.
“Listening is an art that requires attention over talent, spirit over egos, others over self.” —Dean Jackson When I first started doing this, I was appalled at my shortcomings in this area. I would think I was listening when, in fact, I was building up my response to what the other person was saying. I wasn’t giving my undivided attention to the person who was sitting right in front of me. I would make little trips thorough my brain, working up my response. The problem with this? I rarely learned anything. After all, everything that was in my brain, I had already learned. “I remind myself every morning: Nothing I say this day will teach me anything. So if I’m going to learn, I must do it by listening.” —Larry King For the last several years, I have stopped racing through life and made a conscious decision to learn and grow. I now reflect. I now search out ways that I can learn and grow. So much of this knowledge of myself comes directly from those who I am having a conversation with. And I am listening…most of the time…so much better! “I am still learning.”—Michelangelo, at age 87
