Exciting Enhancements at Woodbridge:

Experience the latest upgrades designed to elevate your club experience and keep our facilities in top-notch condition.

We are thrilled to share some fantastic updates and improvements happening around the club that are designed to enhance your overall experience and ensure that our facilities remain top-notch.

Tennis Courts Resurfaced

One of the most noticeable upgrades is the resurfacing of our middle tennis courts and pickleball courts. We understand how important well-maintained courts are for your game, and we are confident that the new surfaces will provide an excellent playing experience. Whether you are practicing your serve or engaging in a friendly match, the improved courts are ready to support your passion for racquet sports.

New Cart Fleet Arriving Soon

We will be introducing a brand-new fleet of golf carts in the next month or so. These new carts are equipped with the latest features to ensure comfort and reliability as you navigate our beautiful golf course. We know that having dependable transportation on the course can make your game more enjoyable, and we are excited to offer you this upgrade.

Kitchen Upgrades: Swamp Coolers Replaced

To ensure the comfort of our staff and the quality of our food service, we have replaced three swamp coolers above the kitchen. This improvement helps maintain a more consistent and comfortable environment for our culinary team, which in turn allows them to continue providing you with exceptional dining experiences.

Equipment for Golf Course Maintenance

Our commitment to maintaining the golf course in pristine condition is unwavering. To support our dedicated maintenance staff, we are adding several pieces of equipment to our arsenal. This includes a new shoulder mower, two sprayers, and a couple of walk mowers. These tools will enhance our ability to keep the greens, fairways, and roughs in excellent shape, ensuring a top-quality playing surface for all members.

Second Bottle Filling Station

In addition to the aforementioned improvements, we are delighted to announce the installation of a second bottle filling station at the Lake Course, adjacent to the restroom. Just like the successful initiative along the river, this new filling station aims to promote sustainability by encouraging the use of reusable bottles among our members and guests. Now, whether you’re enjoying a round of golf or a leisurely stroll around the lake, staying hydrated while minimizing single-use plastic consumption has never been easier. More stations to come throughout the year around the property!

Ongoing Commitment to Improvement

We are always on the lookout for areas in all departments that need attention and opportunities for enhancement. Our goal is to continually improve the club, making it a place where you can relax, enjoy, and create wonderful memories. Your satisfaction and enjoyment are our top priorities, and we appreciate your support and feedback as we strive to make our club the best it can be.

Thank you for being a valued member of our community. We look forward to seeing you around the club and hope you enjoy these exciting improvements!

MAXIMIZING CONVENIENCE AND SAVINGS: A Change in Payment Policy

Dear Woodbridge Members,

We hope this message finds you enjoying the many amenities and activities offered here at the Club. As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance member experience and streamline operations, we would like to bring to your attention a change in our payment policy that will benefit both the Club and its members.

Effective July 1, the Club will be implementing a 3% credit card processing fee on all transactions paid via credit cards. This decision has been carefully considered in response to the significant fees imposed by credit card companies, ultimately detracting from the resources available for improving Club facilities and services.

However, we understand the importance of providing convenient payment options for our members. To ensure that you can continue to enjoy seamless transactions without incurring additional charges, we encourage you to take advantage of an alternative method: charging expenses directly to your Club account.

Charging expenses to your Club account offers several advantages:

1. Convenience: By charging expenses to your account, you can enjoy a hassle-free payment experience without the need to carry cash or use credit cards for each transaction. Your charges will be conveniently consolidated into a single monthly statement for easy tracking and management.

2. Savings: Unlike credit card transactions, which incur processing fees, charging expenses to your account eliminates the need for these fees, allowing you to maximize your savings while supporting the Club's financial sustainability.

3. Efficiency: Streamlining payments through Club accounts helps us optimize our administrative processes and reduces the burden of credit card reconciliation, allowing us to allocate resources more effectively toward enhancing member services and facilities.

It's important to note that the 3% credit card processing fee will not apply to debit card transactions, providing an alternative payment option for those who prefer to avoid additional charges.

We understand that change can sometimes be met with questions or concerns, and we are here to address any inquiries you may have regarding this new payment policy. Our team is committed to ensuring a smooth transition and providing assistance every step of the way.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work together to strengthen our Club community and ensure its continued success. Thank you.

Golf Rules

Last Month’s Question –

In stroke play, a player plays a wrong ball from deep rough onto the putting green. When the player reaches the putting green, the mistake is discovered. The player returns to the rough and plays another ball that they believe to be theirs. Then, the player discovers that they have played a second wrong ball. What’s the ruling?

Answer –

The stroke made with the wrong ball, and any more strokes before the mistake is corrected, do not count. The player incurs a 2-stroke penalty, and must correct the mistake before making a stroke to begin another hole or, for the final hole of the round, before returning their scorecard.

This Month’s Question –

In match play, a player’s ball lies in a bunker, while their opponent’s ball lies on the putting green, but farther from the hole; the player plays out of turn and the ball comes to rest on the putting green. The player then rakes the bunker. After the player has raked the bunker, the opponent cancels the stroke and requires the player to replay. What is the ruling?

Bunker Rake Position

After playing out of bunkers at Woodbridge, rake the sand smooth and leave the rake half-in & half-out of the bunker.

CIGAR CLUB UPDATE

Successful 2-Man Scramble

Dear Cigar Club Members,

I want to thank those who came out for our two-man scramble. We had 66 participants on a Wednesday night. That was a new record for a non Lewis and Clark event.

We are planning on having a few events this summer. There is a very good possibility that we will have a three-club tourney. I am looking for new ideas for our second summer event.

In the fall, we will have the 14-club challenge, the annual trip to Las Vegas, and hopefully with a little planning, we bring back the trip to Reno.

If you have any ideas, please feel free to email me. The Cigar Club was created to have fun and do things outside the normal scope of our Club. Let’s find something we can all enjoy on a weeknight.

My email is Kevin.wolf@nm.com if you have any questions or suggestions.

LOVE FOR MOM

In the morning light, with a smile so bright, She grabs her racket, ready for the fight. With every serve, she shows her grace, A loving mom, in her happy place.

Her laughter rings, like the tennis ball’s song, Her strength and spirit, forever strong. With each swing and volley, her heart takes flight, A tennis star, shining so bright.

Off the court, she’s a guiding star, A loving mom, our best by far. In her embrace, we always find,

A champion’s love, warm and kind.

June’s Tip of the Month Practicing Patience and Interpreting Outcomes Effectively

In 2015, I played in the Northern California Open for the first time. Hosted at Bayonet in Monterey, at the time it was the biggest professional event in which I had ever played. I had had a good year playing proams and NCPGA Assistant events, but the Norcal Open would be the first proper minitour event or state open of my career. Luckily and happily, I played some good golf and shot four under par for three days including 16 birdies and finished in a tie for 8th place. The winner of that tournament was a San Diego State standout who had just turned pro and shot 65 the last round to finish 12 under par. Impressed by that score, I decided I would keep a casual eye on the winner, a talented pro and current PGA Champion, Xander Schauffele.

In short time, Schauffele became one of the best players in the world, graduating through the Web.com tour to earn his PGA Tour card and eventually winning big events like the Tour Championship by the end of his second year as a professional. He was even named the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 2016-2017. Clearly, he was destined for stardom: a perennial top 10 player since that time, a major championship would obviously soon follow. But, it didn’t. In terms of strokes gained since his rookie year, he has been the best player in the world. Close calls and a few 54-hole leads not converted into wins had a lot of the media saying that he was a great player that simply could not close.

Take the tournament at Quail Hollow before his breakthrough at the PGA Championship in which he led after each of the first three rounds only to be passed by a lights out Rory McIlroy on Sunday. He was even asked by a reporter early in the week at Valhalla if not closing out tournaments bothered him to which he said, “I shot 12 under par and

led for a long time on a major championship golf course; the fact that Rory finished at 17 under par doesn’t take away from the golf I played and am capable of playing.” In other words, the “can’t close” narrative was fodder for the media but didn’t at all resemble anything going on in his own mind.

His statement got me to thinking about just how much patience is required to play this game. Phil Mickelson was one of the best players in the world for 12 years before he finally won his first Masters in 2004. Justin Rose was the darling of the golf world when he finished 4th in the Open Championship at 17 years old in 1998; he wouldn’t win a major until 2013 or become world #1 until 2018-19. It took Xander 8 years to get his first major. What occurred to me is that these remarkable individuals do not allow results to change their opinions of their ability, at least not in the long term. When a great player hits a poor shot, they take on an attitude of “Look how good the next one is going to be,” rather than wasting time punishing themselves. Perhaps it’s not what happens to us, but how we interpret what happens to us.

Let’s look at common turning points in careers or a single round/tournament:

• Never make large scale changes or react to one tournament or round of golf. You probably haven’t changed that much physically especially if you’ve been playing well before that. Consult with your coach, go back to your checklist, and move on.

• One bad shot is not a trend. Players often ruin their round after one bad shot, especially if it’s that certain shot that gets under their skin. Great players hit bad shots. Accept it and move on.

• Don’t compare yourself to others, I mean, never do it. If you play as well

as you ever have and finish middle of the pack, you should be happier than playing mediocre and achieving a high finish. Always put your improvement first.

• It’s common to look back at a round that got away from you and realize there was a moment where, if you had just relaxed, you could have stopped all of the damage that followed your change of attitude. Often it happens when a player has a great round going then makes one bogey or double. You will never play a round without some level of adversity. Embrace it and move on.

• One shot or round does not define the style of your golf game. Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are unbelievable drivers of the ball but even they have rounds when they spray it. PGA Pro who played in the PGA Championship, Brad Marek, is a great iron player but in our most recent round together hit several uncharacteristic poor irons in a row. With no change in emotion, he got up and down for par each time and seemed to enjoy doing it. The poor iron shots were not an indictment of this ability with those clubs.

These are just several examples of the super power all great players seem to have. Whatever happens to them, they seem to interpret the event in the best way possible. In Xander’s case, he didn’t allow a lack of wins to distract him from the quality of golf he was playing. For you, it may not be a major championship but whatever barrier you are trying to break down, the lessons learned from the people mentioned in this month’s article can serve all of well. Most of the time, they are lessons we continue learning our entire golfing lives.

TENNIS LEAGUE SPRING RESULTS

We are all back out on the courts already preparing for an even more dominating approach to next year‘s tennis season. I guess you could say we love, love tennis!

C Team:

The Woodbridge C Team finished their first season and celebrated at the all league Luncheon at Del Rio Country Club. We were proud of our accomplishments this season and glad to cross the finish line. With four rescheduled matches due to rain, it was a winter season of heavy rain on Wednesday nights, our season went long. We are proud that all 5 lines pulled off at least one W in our first year and our line 5 duo finished our season in victory with their great win and we could not have been happier for them! As a team we had a win in one overall match, it felt great. We are dedicated and determined to take on the 24/25 season with more wins and more importantly…more fun and great snacks!

B Teams:

This fall, Woodbridge Country Club was excited to have two B level teams on our tennis roster. After winning first place two years in a row, the existing C Team from 2022-2023 collectively moved up to the ranks of level B allowing Woodbridge to have two B teams in the Central Valley Tennis League competition for 2023-2024 season.

It was exciting to double down on the tennis and have twice the opportunity for Woodbridge to shine with our tennis skills and sportsmanship throughout the valley. Although there was competition, it was more about camaraderie as we worked to advance our skills and our rankings to do our country club proud! At the close of the season this spring, Woodbridge B Team Black secured 4th place and Woodbridge B Team Red came in right behind earning a 5th place finish.

We are all back out on the courts already preparing for an even more dominating approach to next year‘s tennis season. I guess you could say we love, love tennis!

A Team:

Our Woodbridge A team had a great 2023-2024 season and whole lot of fun! We finished 15-3 which landed us a strong 2nd place, just one match difference between the first place team. Our matches were competitive and fun, usually celebrated by a lively lunch following our matches.

Our amazing line up:

Line 1 -Our “sister team” Janis Morehead and Jill Thompson

Line 2- Natalie Nguyen and Lora Fry

Line 3- Becky Harper and Carol Johnston

Line 4- Cindy Brink and Callie Crum

Line 5-Carrie Koenig and Kim Mulbarger

Three of our players were in the Top 10 Players of the entire league-Janis Morehead (#1), Jill Thompson (#5) and Natalie Nguyen (#6).

With our league matches completed, you can find us all on the courts all playing together through the summer months.

49er Update

Ladies heating up the course in May!

Lots of golf action with the 49ers for the month of May. We started off with a fun game of only par 4s counting for prizes, followed by a day of stroke play.

Patriot Day competition on the 16th was great fun with the Stripes narrowly winning over the Stars. We all shown brightly covering the course in our red, white & blue regalia. We topped the morning off with lunch and a yummy red, white & blue dessert.

The 23rd was our inaugural Ryder Cup competition against Oakdale. Unfortunately after several close matches the trophy cup heads to Oakdale, but everyone had a wonderful time meeting new golf friends.

Coming up we have Flag Day competition, a play day of mystery partners, a Tuesday play day due to the upcoming Men’s Invitational, and a fun game of best ball.

This month’s instructional morning with Teresa covered use of our hybrids. We encourage women of all golf abilities to join us for golf, camaraderie, lunch, laughs and lively conversation.

See you out there
