Interview with ‘Alcea Aesthetics’

what they wish to achieve from treatment and provide them with several treatment options that best suit and match their expectations.

What characteristics set you apart from other practices?

All staff are thoroughly trained and specialise in each area required. The owner, Alexys Reuter is an advanced nurse practitioner with PGcert in Dermatology and MSc in Aesthetic medicine; this means all treatment will be backed with evidence and all patients’ can feel safe with their performing clinician.

At Alcea Aesthetic & Wellness Centre in North Cheam, London, we offer a huge variety of non-invasive advanced skin treatments.

We personalise our treatments to meet the individual needs of our clients and ensure a positive outcome.

Background of ALCEA aesthetic and wellness centre?

With so many new aesthetic clinics rising ALCEA aesthetic and wellness centre wanted to take a more person-centred approach to health and skin care. There is no one-size fits-all approach and that’s why we have integrated the use of specialist lasers, skincare, physiotherapy and wellness treatments to create a personalised treatment plan for each client that best meets their needs.

What’s your customer process from receiving initial enquiry?

All patients will undergo a thorough consultation prior to treatment to examine

Illustrate an example of a client experience and how they benefitted your work?

A lot of clients come in concerned about specific skin lesions and are unable to get an appointment with their GP; one client in particular had a large mole on the side of her face and this had impacted her confidence leaving her scared to leave the house. When she came to see us at ALCEA a full mole check was carried out and it was determined that the mole was benign. We then proceeded to remove the mole using our state-of-the-art C02 laser. 4 weeks later she returned to the clinic feeling like a new woman, the area was fully healed and there was no mark left; she had a new lease of life and we were so happy to be able to help with that.

Most pleasing aspect of job?

Running the clinic is extremely rewarding, being able to help people with their concerns and helping them to feel and look better.

A little bit of history

Originally a Saxon settlement, Epsom remained a small rural community until the discovery of mineral water rich in magnesium sulphate in the 17th century. This led to its development into a spa town popular with prominent wealthy figures of the day, who would visit to ‘take the waters’. Taking their name from the area, modern day Epsom Salts are said to ease joint and muscle pain. The town underwent further development in the Victorian era with the advent of the railway in 1847 and has served as a London commuter town in the years since.

Historic buildings such as The Assembly Rooms (built c1690) surround Epsom’s Market Place. Mrs Beeton, author of the famous Book of Household Management, lived here too - in fact, her former home is now a cookware shop!

10 www.hamptons.co.uk

Why move to Epsom & Banstead?

Epsom has maintained its popularity following its rise to prominence as a spa town in the 17th century and is as highly regarded today as ever, striking a balance between easy access to the capital and ample green space. People from a wide range of backgrounds flock to live in the town, and the wonderful schooling, restaurants, shops and transport links appeal to commuters, students, and families alike.

Epsom boasts an eclectic stock of property for sale and to rent with something to suit all tastes and budgets, from substantial family homes to charming cottages to modern apartments. The town’s rich architectural heritage is evidenced by the many surviving examples of Late Stuart, Queen Anne and Georgian buildings, reflecting its popularity as a spa town in the 17th and 18th centuries. What is now the Assembly Rooms public house is a building of significant historic interest, having been built in 1692 as a gathering place for the elite who visited the spa resort.

11 www.hamptons.co.uk

Epsom is an historic market town found just 15 miles south west of London. It is a perfect destination to explore the history and heritage of this gorgeous part of Surrey.

Mentions of Epsom (or Ebbesham as it was then) date back to the 13th Century - there are even finds of Anglo Saxon jewellery dating back to the 7th century on display in the British Museum! So there’s a rich and varied history to explore!

The town is renowned the world over as the place where Epsom Salts were discovered and home to one of the world’s oldest and most famous horse races, the Epsom Derby.

Epsom became an exclusive and popular spa town and leisure destination in the Georgian era. The year 1847 saw the building of Epsom’s striking clocktower, which is located in the heart of the bustling Market Place.

The Market Place plays host to farmers’ markets, vegan food fairs, a regular Thursday weekly market and antiques and collectables fairs.

Epsom has no shortage of green space with numerous parks and recreation grounds, but by far the most impressive is Epsom Common, a nature reserve spanning 438 acres that forms part of the Epsom and Ashtead Commons Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Hobbledown Adventure Farm Park and Zoo is a great day out for young families and is set in Horton Country Park, which also boasts polo and golf clubs. The Surrey Hills Area of Natural Beauty and the North Downs are both a short drive away for more extensive walking and cycling routes.

Meet the Head at Cumnor House Boys’ School

Miss Emma Edwards is an Early Years specialist and joined Cumnor House in 2004 as a Reception class teacher. She soon became the Head of Early Years, as well as taking on the role of SENCo and Designated Safeguarding Lead. By 2013 she was appointed Head of Learning Support and Director of Studies, and has since had the roles of Assistant Head, Senior Deputy Head and was appointed Head in 2020.

What attracted you to Cumnor House Boys’ School?

Cumnor House has always had an excellent reputation. After teaching in Yorkshire for two years it was time to move back to my hometown. Independent schools offer so much more than just education to children. Pastoral care, high academic standards, and an emphasis on the importance of the wellbeing of children is paramount. How would you describe the ethos of Cumnor House Boys’ School? Our ethos is one of compassion and kindness. We embed the Cumnor Way throughout the school and focus on ‘The five core values: courage, compassion, integrity, endeavour, and belief, that all our boys, families and staff follow.

What inspired you to teach at a boys’ school?

I was always interested in the way boys learn and develop. Having four sisters meant that my family was very female dominant, and I wanted to make a difference to boys’ in our society, teaching them to show their emotions and to promote positive mental health. How would the students describe you? The boys would describe me as kind, they know that I care about them and want the best from them. They would also say that I have very high expectations and like them to work hard, be kind and show integrity at all times.

What do you think are the key skills that children should have mastered by the time they enter Senior school?

The boys should be well rounded and have skills across the curriculum and be able to flourish in areas that they are interested and excited in. A high level of Maths and English is important and reading and language skills are key to their success.

How does Cumnor House Boys’ School support the boys in this important stage of the educational journey?

As a prep school it is our role to prepare them for their future school. We do this by providing excellent teac hing and enabling the boys to be successful at a high level in Sport and Music.

How does the school help children transition to the senior school environment?

From Kindergarten upwards the children have a busy timetable with different lessons delivered by specialist teachers. As they move into the Upper school in Year 5 their timetable and subject allocations are similar to that of a senior school which enables them to transition smoothly.

Cumnor House School

Tel:
www.cumnorhouse.com

How does the School’s pastoral care provision help support children with any anxieties associated with settling into Senior school?

Pastoral care is extremely important and form tutors spend time assessing and observing how the boys are doing. Any additional support needed is provided on an individual basis. We also nurture groups which focus on teaching strategies to manage anxiety.

What sport and/or co-curricular activities does the school offer which really engage students in the first two years of their life at the school?

All boys have weekly swimming lessons in our on-site swimming pool. They are able to take part in swimming galas from Reception up to Year 8. Our boys have specialist Rugby, Football and Cricket coaches and have the opportunity to join a number of choirs and music ensembles. Some of our most popular clubs include computer coding, mindful yoga, DT club and dinosaur club. Cumnor House is currently U11 Surrey Prep Schools Cricket Cup 2021 Winners and U11 ECSA National Cricket Cup 2021 Winners and one of the top 50 Prep schools for cricket in the UK.

What are the qualities of a great teacher?

To be a great teacher you need to be able to build a good rapport with your pupils. They need to know that you care about them, and you want them to do well. Teachers should be role models.

What advice would you give to parents choosing a school?

Visit the school when the pupils are there on a typical day. Sometimes it can be very different to visiting on an open day. Make sure the school suits your child, ask what opportunities will be afforded to them and if the environment allow them to flourish. Most importantly will they be happy there? What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a teacher, of course!

What is your real-life superpower?

Kindness; making sure other people are happy is very important to me.

Miss Emma Edwards: Headmistress.

Meet the Head of Cumnor School for Girls

What attracted you to Cumnor House Girls’ School?

When you walk into Cumnor House Girls’ School, you feel the joy and the friendly, family atmosphere immediately. Then as you progress into school, you see genuinely happy and engaged pupils. The facilities are outstanding and the opportunities that each girl has to develop their whole self are broad-ranging.

How would you describe the ethos of Cumnor House Girls’ School?

The Girls’ School is a happy and vibrant place, where each child and teacher strives to be their best self. We are a non-selective, yet academic school where each girl achieves remarkable outcomes in every aspect of school life. We are about preparing our girls to make them future ready not just 11+ ready.

What inspired you to teach at a girls’ school?

I enjoy teaching in an all girls’ school because in single sex education, there is no gender bias. It will always be a girl who is best in Maths, Science, Art or Cricket. An all-girls’ environment promotes a can do / will do attitude, we promote female role models, both historic and contemporary to inspire the girls and help them see possibilities for themselves.

How would the students describe you?

I think the girls would see me as happy and caring, interested in what they do and very determined. They know that I want them to be the best that they can be.

What do you think are the key skills that children should have mastered by the time they enter Senior school?

The girls must be emotionally intelligent. We know that they will have strong academics, but they need to be able to be resilient and proactive learners. The girls should be confident and engaging communicators.

How would you describe that Cumnor House Girls’ School supports the girls in this important stage of the educational journey?

Academically the girls are taught to a high standard, with an emphasis on understanding with understanding comes confidence. The girls are given the skills to be able to fully engage with the requirements needed when applying for senior schools, not just academically, but to be able to engage at interview confidently. We encourage our girls at every stage, ensuring that they also have the inner resources and strength to cope with what can be a stressful time. Their wellbeing is important and we ensure that the girls know how to look after that too. It’s about supporting parents through this time too, so we do.

How does the school help children transition to the senior school environment?

There are various transition events held by the senior schools, but once the girls have completed their entrance exams, the learning does not stop, we ensure that they have enrichment activities where they can really explore some subjects in greater depth, they will undertake a business challenge but also learn life skills such as their Bikability training and Junior Citizen.

How does the School’s pastoral care provision help support children with any anxieties associated with settling into Senior school?

We have a wellbeing lead who will talk to any children who feel particularly anxious, this is rare as the overwhelming feeling from the girls is excitement, they are ready to face this next chapter, they know that they have the personal and academic skills to take them through. My Cumnor fledglings are ready to fly.

16 www.hamptons.co.uk
Cumnor House School Tel: 020 8668 0050 www.cumnorhouse.com

What sport and/or co-curricular activities does the school offer school?

Sport is a great part of the school, all girls swim each week from Reception through to year 6 and this makes for very able swimmers who have the opportunity to compete both locally and nationally. We play netball and hockey, having matches and tournaments against other schools. Our Cross Country is strong and we have success in national competitions. In the Summer we focus on Cricket and Athletics. Again, with great success on the local and county scene. We offer a wide range of after school sports clubs. We have fabulous sports facilities, a large field, an all-weather area and an indoor Sports hall so there is no reason for sport not to take place. It is important to us that sport is for all and that the girls all get the opportunity to represent their school in competition.

What are the qualities of a great teacher?

All teachers have different strengths and personalities but it is imperative that they care and want the best outcomes for their pupils. We are fortunate to have many subjects taught by specialists who are genuinely inspirational and who share their expertise willingly and with great enthusiasm.

What advice would you give to parents choosing a school?

There is no perfect school, but there is a school that is right for your child. Visit the schools and get a feel for what it is like, is it welcoming, are the pupils engaged and do they appear happy? Do you share the vision of the headteacher, can you see your child there, can you see yourself there as part of the parent body? Remember that your child will develop and change over time and what is right for a child at 4 may not be right at 11. Ask lots of questions, this is a big decision and you want to get it right.

What is your real-life superpower?

I believe that I am able to see, and be, positive even when things are challenging.

Headmistress: Mrs Amanda McShane.

The site also has a number of Bronze Age burial mounds (3-5000 years old) which have been designated Scheduled Ancient Monuments. In the Bronze Age, the Heath was largely clear of trees. Around this time, a cemetery was established on the Heath; the burial mounds (tumuli) are still visible today

Nork Park

Nork Park is an important recreational area for local residents and visitors alike. A popular dog walking spot, the park is recognised for its wonderful views, as well as the rare and unusual plants and flowers that grow there. Its football pitches, playgrounds and community centre are well used by the local community. One of the park’s most interesting –and potentially valuable – features is its established in the late 1840s. The arboretum contains a number of non-native tree species, many of them mature and home to thriving wildlife communities. It has great potential to be a regionally important educational and scientific facility.

Seaton House is an incredibly special place. The family environment we have here is created by the way everyone works together with one single aim; to support our children and help them to become the very best version of themselves! Recently awarded the Wellbeing Award for Schools, our assessor reported “this is genuinely a community where everyone knows everyone else, cares about their wellbeing and notices when people need support and are willing to offer it”.

Courtesy and kindness are expected as the norm and our exceptional team of staff encourage our girls to develop initiative, independence, resilience and confidence.

For the last three years, Seaton House has been ranked 2nd in the Sunday Times Top 100 Prep School in England and it is no coincidence that our girls leave us to attend the very best schools in the area, with many achieving grammar school places and multiple scholarships in academic, sporting and music at leading independent high schools! Most girls receive multiple offers to choose from, with the staff and Headteacher at Seaton House always available to help support and guide parents and children with these important decisions.

All other year groups £3,865 per term

REGISTRATION: Accepted throughout the year, across all year groups, £55 registration fee

Girls can join our Nursery in the term in which they turn 3 and parents can benefit from the 15 hours Early Years Funding (subject to certain conditions). Fees are very competitive as reported by £/Schoolsmith Score, who stated that we “offer the best value for money” of Prep schools in Sutton. Fees can be paid termly or the annual cost can be spread over 9 months.

Specialist teachers provide creative and innovative teaching to students across the school and outstanding academic results are achieved yearon-year. Our most recent ISI inspection found us ‘Excellent’ across all areas.

Our pupil demographic reflects a broad spectrum of society and being a small school with just 20 girls per class, means that our staff will get to know every child individually, learning their strengths and challenges to ensure every child thrives in all areas of school life. Classes from Year 1 have their own set of laptops and the school subscribes to a wide variety of educational learning platforms.

Music and sport play a major part in school life. To enhance the music curriculum we have visiting peripatetic teachers who offer private tuition in flute, piano and guitar during the school day. In PE, the girls play a huge variety of sports including hockey, lacrosse, tennis, football, cricket, tag-rugby, netball, swimming and athletics. The sports teams regularly have fixtures against local schools.

As a member of the Independent Schools Association, the girls can take part (and are quite often very successful) in national competitions, predominately in sport, music and art.

Wraparound care operates from 7.30am – 8.30am and 3.30pm – 6pm and an in-house, pay-as-you-go holiday club, runs in the major holidays. A wideranging choice of extra-curricular clubs are offered on a daily basis including fencing, gymnastics, ballet, drama, singing, chess, science, coding etc.

To best understand what a friendly, caring and vibrant school we are, come and meet us and let our pupils tell you themselves what makes us so special. We look forward to welcoming you soon….

“Seaton House has been a lovely experience for my daughter, she has developed into a happy confident child due to such a warm and caring environment.”

Planning and Building Control

Unsure which services you need?

If you are thinking of making changes to your property, you may need to apply for planning permission and / or Building Regulations approval. If you’re not sure which applications to make, please use the guidance below to help you to decide what you need to do.

Please note that many developments will require both.

What is planning?

Planning is the process of deciding whether a proposed development should go ahead or not. It uses national and local policies to consider the development in its context and may look at the impact of the work on neighbours and the wider community, existing architecture, the land, the layout, and existing or proposed infrastructure (such as drains, transport and schools). You will probably need planning permission if your proposed development will do any of the following:

• create a new building, or change the use or appearance of an existing building

• affect the sunlight, privacy or outlook for neighbouring properties

• affect the nearby area with noise disturbance, smell or fumes

• work on or around listed buildings or any conservation areas

• affect traffic volumes, road safety or access

• change the density of development in an area

• use significantly different materials or finishes from nearby properties

• have an effect on existing trees

What is building control?

Building control applies national statutory regulations to ensure the structural quality of any building work, in areas such as safety, public health, accessibility, and the materials used. Most substantial building projects (such as an extension, knocking down walls or converting a garage or loft) will need Building Regulations approval.
