As the year comes to a close and another one will soon begin We are all intrigued with what another year could be, especially 2023.

The grade 8s of 2019 will now be the seniors of our school With plenty in store for the new year, we await with excitement to experience what the matrics hold for the final year of their high school career

Focusing on the Sustainability Portfolio; The Sustainability Committee will be growing in 2023! (literally). Wynberg Girls’ High School will be introducing an Ecolab The lab will be built with strictly sustainable materials and resources. It is to be located upstairs near the science block. `` Ecolab will create a safe and fun space for learners to grow and embrace the culture of sustainability which is the future”, says Rumaanah Surtee, Head of sustainability 2022/2023. Furthermore, there are plenty of exciting events that will be hosted during next year such as; Summer ‘23 Ecofest, Sustainability bingo house challenge, Harvesting and Gardening Days, and many more occasions to proceed. These projects are a clear indication of the environmental commitment that our school has made toward a sustainable environment.

Moreover, Wynberg is renowned for its empowering and contagious spirit. The leaders of 2023 have taken it upon themselves to “reinvent the wheel” when it comes to spirit “I want to make spirit appeal to people of all personalities”, says Jada Mcleod (Head of Azima). Not all students are comfortable with cheering and being extroverted, yet that is not the only way to show support. The Head of Houses will be incorporating different forms of spirit to include all students of Wynberg Equally as important is tutor The goal of matric leaders for 2023 is to construct a congenial and inclusive environment in the morning where everyone feels welcomed and comfortable. “My goal is to make our tutor group a family and our tutor class a home I want tutor to be an enjoyable time as we are each other's company every morning.”, says Le ah Lawerence (Matric Leader of ME )

With being the leaders and seniors of the school the new matrics have an exceedingly packed and anticipating year ahead of each and every one of them.

The younger grades, staff, and Wynberg as a whole look forward to seeing the learners fulfill their roles and lead by example

We wish all class of 2023 a memorable and successful last year of school

To the Class of 2023, show us what you could be

Hot tips for High School Survival Isabella Smuts

High school is one of the hardest times of our lives. Sometimes it feels like we are just trying to survive and barely making it. We all need a little help surviving it, so here are some tips from the older grades on how they survived high school:

Enjoy yourself

Push through and work hard

sometimes it isn't about doing outstandingly but just getting through high school alive.

Find a passion

a sport or extra mural that you love can make the days go by easier and give you something to look forward to

Make friends in your classes

you spend most of your time during the week in class and having friends to share experiences with can make your days a lot more fun.

Take breaks and try not to burn out

you have 5 years you have to spend in high school. If you work yourself into a state of exhaustion, how will you survive it all? Even if you have a lot to do, a short break can make all the difference.

Invest in strong friendships and bonds

don't waste time stressing constantly. Have fun and enjoy yourself. your high school years can become very lonely and sometimes we need a few close people who can be our shoulders to lean on during the tough times.

As hard as high school is, it is also one of the best times of your life. Take advantage of all the good and you will be able to survive the bad.

A HEAD GIRL, A FRIEND Imaan Brey

At the beginning of the fourth term, Lunabile Veto officially became the Head of Wynberg Girls’ High School, promising to uphold the school’s values during her term. Although she has barely begun her year in office, it is safe to say she has won the hearts of many learners within the school.

Described by her peers as approachable, trustworthy and understanding, many believe that she is the perfect fit for the position. Lunabile leads by example, upholding the six values of the school and encouraging others to do the same, which makes her appointment as Head of School seem perfectly logical.

Although becoming a leader usually changes certain perceptions about a person, Lunabile has done nothing to change how her peers view her. Following her appointment, students were overjoyed to see someone many considered a friend now become their leader, and are excited to see how the future of Wynberg will be shaped by Lunabile’s hands.

As for Lunabile herself, she hopes to be an approachable Head Girl with the aim of promoting school spirit within Wynberg by forming relationships with learners across all grades. She, as well as the other members of the School Council have already brainstormed a few ideas as to how they may do this, such as interacting with learners at sports matches and encouraging learners to participate in school events.

It is clear that Lunabile is more than capable of leading this school as Head Girl, and Wynberg Girls’ cannot wait to see what she accomplishes in the year to come.

Diary of a Matric learner

Mbali Kamisa

an end for them, but let's backtrack a little and unpack some of the matrics' best memories of high school, as well as some advice they have for the other grades. Here I interviewed Khanyi Kamisa in grade 12 to see what she has to say about the beginning of the end.

Questions and answers with Khanyi Kamisa

How would you describe your high school experience?

Well I'd say it's been a lot like hills and valleys where sometimes the valleys are deep, deep trenches. So, highs and lows mostly.

What are some things or lessons you wish you learnt before entering high school?

I wish that I had gotten into the rhythm of working hard right from the beginning like in grade 8 because the more used to working hard you are right from the beginning the easier it'll be when it counts.

What have been your 3 most memorable high school experiences?

Well the grade 8 orientation, grade 9 camp and my matric ball definitely.

How are you -as a matric- feeling about the upcoming exams/ finals?

Nervous mostly, but honestly I feel that we have gotten sufficient preparation, support and encouragement from our amazing teachers and parents. Lastly, I would like to encourage all matrics out there to relax, do their best and trust in the process.

A Beginner's Guide A Beginner's Guide To Adulting To Adulting

Most people believe that your adult life officially starts the day you turn eighteen. It's the time for teenage rebellion to end and the start of the new, more mature you. That piercing you wanted but your parents said no? They can't say anything now, you're an adult! Well, sort of…

Matrics are often left with a question after matriculating: what now? The transition from moody teenager to sophisticated, put-together adult is quite scary. For some, the fear is what to do now. No more 8:00 classes, slaving away during the day till the clock strikes 3:00. No more venting about stressful classes or being excited about subs. None of that! But it isn't all that bad. There are many ways how it can be a little less daunting for getting your life ready for adulting. This is a guide for that!

Everyone follows different paths in their lives. For some, it's going straight to uni whilst for others, it is the year where they try and figure themselves out. It's a good idea to just have a general idea of what the next chapter of your life is. If you want to keep it spontaneous, that's great too. This is the perfect time to figure out who you are.

Make goals for yourself. It's important to stay motivated. But if you are like some that feel burned out after high school, small goals are great too. Learn a new language by the end of the year? Great! Learn something about yourself through some heavy soul-searching. Even better! New hobbies? Sounds exactly like new opportunities. The world is your oyster. Everything is in the palm of your hand.

And most importantly, TAKE A BREAK. Twelve years can do things for people. Whilst it is important to stay focused and motivated to achieve your dreams and goals, it's important not to feel burned out. Life can sometimes hit you like a ton of bricks. It's good to know when it's time to just take a breather. Relax on the couch and find the most mind-numbing piece of reality TV to watch. And have fun, of course. You're finally free from the shackles of high school and work. Or for a little while at least.

Enjoy life. We are constantly caught up in all the stresses of life that we often forget we are living on something that mainly consists of water and land that spins around on its axis. There's so much to enjoy around us. Take everything day by and take every opportunity that presents itself to you. Life is meant to be lived. Make the most of your amazing postmatric years now!

After spending 12 years of your life in school, it all comes to an end in one day. Once you are released into the bigger world, your decisions may either make or break your life and feeling of fear and uncertainty arises.Thoughts about what you want to do after high school begin to clutter your mind However, you will get through it all

Throughout high school, we have been on a 8 am 3 pm schedule almost every day for about 5 years. Now that you’re out of school, that schedule disappears. You're on your way to adapting to adulthood and finding out what you’d like to do with your upcoming years Your life may feel completely different and you may not know where to move forward.

Are you going to university? Should you take a gap year? What would you want your career to look like? These are all questions that no one can answer certainly, so you’re not alone if you’re feeling confused about your future. What you need to do is, go out into the world and experience life. Put yourself out there and take those risks you’ve always wanted to take because along the way, you will learn more and more about yourself

Hidden under every item of clothing or makeup lies a body, and under the skin of everybody is a soul. Each soul has a personality and purpose but how can one truly know who they are? It takes years of experience to understand yourself, such as your likes, dislikes and wants. We all need time to figure out what we would want to do in this world and what our purpose is. Ask yourself, where would you like to see yourself in a few years and plan to fulfil your purpose or goals.

We all learn things along our journey and it doesn’t just happen in a split second. We all need to take the time to adjust, but we can all be the best we can be. We wish our class of 2022 all the best on their journey

What do we define an “old girl” by, is there a criterion? Is it our very own Wynberg Girls’ High School alumni? Or is it alumni who continue to play a role in our school’s future? I personally believe regardless of whether or not one is an active alumnus, there is much admiration for every single alumnus. At my naive age, I hope that the connection between ‘old girls’ and our school is still alive and present for many years to come. At Wynberg Girls, we are lucky enough to have such dedicated alumni.

This comfort, this freedom from the male gaze, is unnoticeably liberating. So eventually when we leave this space on campus, life is different. Alumni play such a significant role in growing our school’s history and legacy. Girls’ education is important in breaking the sexist history of the importance being on only educating boys.

For many many years, the ideas of the fraternity have fueled boys' schools. In a patriarchal society, the solidarity of women is vital, because we empower one another and truly create safe spaces for young growing women to thrive in.

OLD GIRLS
OLD GIRLS

Alumni networking is also beneficial for schools as it becomes resourceful. The alumni build a sense of community, proudly being a “Wynberg Old Girl” shows learners how vital the bonds and relationships formed at school are. Being active alumni allows one to stay informed with regard to school information thus maintaining their connection to the school. Alumni can help shape the future of our school and future generations of female learners and leaders.

We are fortunate to have a few teachers who are alumni such as Ms Abrahams, Ms Jafter, Ms Marneweck, Ms Stemmet, Ms Meyer, Ms Duggan, Ms King and Ms Wilkinson. Their continuous dedication to our school speaks for itself.

In light of their experiences as Wynberg Girls Alumnus, I have asked them a few questions about their own experiences and the ‘sisterhood’ after matriculating.

Have you ever truly felt bonded to your former “Wynberg sisters”?

Those who I have kept in contact with, definitely! My core group of girlfriends are people who I went to school with. These are my humans.- Ms Wilkinson

When I met other past pupils - I definitely felt that we could identify together with what it was to be an alumnus - a mutual understanding that could connect us - we t Wynberg.- Ms Marneweck

n the WGHS sisterhood after high school?

in contact with a lot of friends that I was with at enjoyed staying in contact with past pupils that I

I love bumping into past pupils in coffee shops or even keeping up with their lives via Instagram. I have even worked with a couple of Alumni.- Ms Marneweck

My feelings of sisterhood have increased more so now that I serve at the school as I try to promote the ideals of transformation and the new values that the school now encompasses, and encourage those to come and see what we are achieving and changing. Wynberg Girls Alumni is trying to build this feeling of sisterhood by be more active in social media spaces to welcome younger voices and talents and by drawing attention to ways in which people can give back. This will grow f strength to strength.- Ms Wilkinson

Why do you feel it is important to be an active alumnus?

This school gives us, as its learners, a lot so when we are able to give back should. You do not need to be a teacher to teach.

So when you leave school and are able to give back through your expertise and life experience you are more than capable and able to provide mentorship to learners who are currently in school. Being able to show young women that there are numerous different spaces for them to fulfil in our world is so important! We as alumni can show WGHS learners that there are so many options later on in life, so many different ways to get there and can also assist them in finding their space.- Ms Wilkinson

This is the only school I have ever taught at. I have thoroughly loved my time here as a teacher - and have been a part of or have helped in my way to make the school a more inclusive space. I love teaching here - but due to my experience as a learner, I have never attended an alumni event.- Ms Marneweck

From these Old Girls it is clear that everyone’s experience at WGHS has been unique. Overall though, one thing is clear: as a Wynberg girl we all have a connection with our school, our home away from home, our school community, as our place of learning and youth. It is evident that as we grow our campus shapes us, and our pathways ahead, and one day we too can help shape the futures of other young women in our society.

T h a t Y o u ' r e Out of school

You can go to the bathroom without requesting permission to relieve your liquids. You no longer have to make awkward eye contact with people you no longer talk to in the hallways

No more homework! Until university or you get a job. Life will feel less monotonous as you can go anywhere on what would be a school day.

You can now see past teachers in public places and try to evade them through the deli aisle.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

6. Demerits are a thing of the past. Now, you’ll just get fired or arrested if you do something wrong to a major extent.

7. You have the opportunity to try out a new personality in front of new people

8. You won’t get a stiff buttock from sitting on a wooden chair all-day

9. You can travel the world by backpacking and staying in hostels and eventually get paranoid about the dangers of that. (Such as getting taken and get put in a torture ring for the rich people’s entertainment.) Watch Hostel before committing to this plan.

10. You can ultimately exert free will which is a scary prospect as you are in full control of your life, to a point. -

I wish you well on your journey!

Wynberg Girls’ very own Art Exhibition Shriya Parbhoo

At Wynberg Girls’, we wholeheartedly take pride in our school for the activity of our four set pillars. In October, our cultural pillar really stood out and made a statement with its Art Exhibition, presented by our outstanding art department.

This was an opportunity for the artists of our school to showcase who they truly are through the pieces they presented, and to be recognised for their hard work and talent, and when we tell you they did not disappoint. Our assembly hall was filled with all sorts of art in every kind of medium, to really show every aspect of what these learners are capable of. From sketches to charcoal to oil paint and watercolours, there was something to speak to everyone, and not one piece that did not have a story to tell. Every corner hung a canvas, and every detail was meticulously seen and perfected by the artists. Every line was intentional and had something to say, ultimately making each piece breathtaking. The space was transformed into a memoir of everything that Wynberg represents, through the creativity and individuality that each piece radiated..

Needless to say the Art Exhibition could not have gone better, andnecessary for showing the newcomers what Wynberg, especially after Covid, is all about This event was by far something to be remembered and comes to mind when we consider how achieved and talented each learner really is and what we as a school are capable of.

The Seven Be's To Keep In Mind The Seven Be's To Keep In Mind

With The Busy Bees of 2023 With The Busy Bees of 2023

Before welcoming the Grade 8s and new learners of 2023, here’s a quick checklist for the school learners to go through:

Be yourself

This is the most important thing, as lying to yourself and others won't get you anywhere!

Be realistic

You can't just change your identity in a few days, whether it's for yourself or someone else. The best things require hard work, so give yourself time to work hard.

Be involved

Want to meet new people? New clubs and societies are the perfect way to go. Why don't you try something you've always wanted to do? Or something you never even thought of trying? The sky's the limit.

Juliette White Juliette White

Be helpful

At Wynberg, we are all just like siblings, friendly and connected. Helping each other find teachers, classes, and each other is a part of maintaining the acceptance we are known for.

Be prepared

Knowing what's coming is often what gives you the upper hand in life. Try to remember where you were emotionally when joining a new school and know that many new kids are going to go through the same.

Be excited

Due to the constant " , I'm tired" we hear each other moaning, we know school is simply exhausting. But, try to have some enthusiasm, even if you have to fake it.

Be focused

School is hard, and only gets more challenging as you grow, so pay good attention to your academics too!
