It is with pleasure that I present my Grand Final report to you as President of the Mid South Eastern Football League (MSEFL).
All roads lead to Port MacDonnell for the 2023 Mid South Eastern Football League (MSEFL) Grand Final and on behalf of the Mid South Eastern Football League I extend a warm welcome to you as we seek an exci ng finish to 2023 in all grades of Netball and Football a er a sensa onal season with some close contests having already been played in the finals series.
Thank you to Hatherleigh (1st Semi), Tantanoola (2nd Semi), & Robe (Preliminary Final) for showcasing your club facili es and for being excellent hosts in the three finals and I am certain today once again at Port MacDonnell will be no excep on.
Despite another very wet winter, the oval surface is in great condi on and all other ma ers will be taken care of under the leadership of Port MacDonnell Football Club President Cathie Williams.
I thank all of the League's member clubs for your efforts and achievements on and off the field this year as well as the work that you do in your communi es as leaders. People in our communi es are reliant on the social and spor ng opportuni es that are provided by the Football and Netball Clubs. Our communi es are faced with many challenges in today's world and our spor ng clubs need to con nue to be the hub of the community providing opportuni es and social interac on for everyone. We must always strive for con nuous improvement to ensure the long term viability and sustainability of the League and all member clubs. It is fantas c to see the obvious pride and joy in the support that goes for each club from their communi es and the people in it and I'm sure we'll see plenty of club colours and vocal support today in all football and netball contests.
One of the many high points of any season is always the interleague compe on. I thank all the clubs and players for their con nued support. The League did not play senior interleague this year, however our underage teams par cipated against the WBFL & KNTFL in the U15's & U17's. This was held on the June long weekend, which was well hosted by Bordertown. I take this opportunity to thank Under 17 Coach Reece Duncan, Under 15 Coach Chrissy Mules and their players and support staff for their efforts. Interleague football showcases our League and provides a pathway and opportunity for our players. MSEFL had five players Ben Gregory and Mitch Lowe (Kalangadoo), Kallan Bevan (Mount Burr), Wade Chant and Colby Monroe (Port MacDonnell) chosen in the SE Zone team to play in the SA Country Championships in the Barossa. Despite winning both games on Saturday we found ourselves playing off for third and fourth posi on on Sunday and didn't perform as well as we did on Saturday and finished fourth. Ben McGregor was an assistant coach, Sam Benne was our trainer and Ma Ballintyne carried the drinks.
As in previous years, imbalances on the scoreboard and lack of numbers have been issues in our underage compe ons. It is pleasing to see clubs con nue to work towards providing the playing opportuni es star ng at Auskick and the Under 11's as this is cri cal to sustaining our junior numbers in later years. Thanks also to Heath Sims, SANFL Game Development Coordinator – South East for all the support you provide at this level. I con nue to urge all clubs to work with schools and Auskick programs to provide that pathway for your next MSEFL club footballers.
Thanks to our Match Review Officers and Tribunal Commissioners that have been needed to adjudicate on a couple of occasions throughout the season and thanks for your commitment and assistance.
Neil Webber, our Umpires Director once again had another challenging year with many injuries and unavailability's, however good support and coopera on from clubs ensured that all posi ons were filled each week. The League s ll needs to gain new umpires to ensure that we con nue to have adequate numbers and to keep the umpiring panel
strong. I encourage any newly re red player or any person (male or female) that may be interested in becoming an umpire to come forward – training and assistance is provided and it is a great way to s ll be involved in the game that we all love. Our Umpire Scholarship is available to encourage and reward new central umpires and we hope that it will provide a pathway to bolster our ageing umpire panel. The League would love to hear from those that have just re red as footballers and even our younger males and females that have a love of the game and would like to be involved.
It has been a good season for the netballers and we are delighted with their successes and we are keen to con nue to build on and strengthen the rela onship again next season. Thanks Sara to you and your team on a job well done.
It is pleasing that the netball and football rela onships are con nuing to get be er at Club and League level, but there will always be ways to improve and strengthen those bonds. Both sports rely on each other being successful to ensure a vibrant and sustainable compe on in all grades.
All outlets of the Media (print, radio & web sites) have promoted the MSEFL very well, however I believe we all need to con nue to provide good stories to the media so that we get be er coverage of our League.
Xpress Signs have once again published the Budget this season online culmina ng in this week's superb Grand Final Budget publica on, which is a collector's item for all MSEFL enthusiasts and Clubs. Special thanks to the SE Voice for providing an informa ve print sec on of the Budget in their paper, which was greatly appreciated by many MSEFL followers.
We acknowledge the generous sponsorship provided by our partners and sponsors of the Family League –All of our season sponsors have been promoted in the Budget during the year and include the following: First Super, South East Property Sales & Management, Belgravia Sports Apparel, IDM Sports, Ma hews Petroleum, Sherrin, Thomas Foods Interna onal, Wa le Range Trading, Marjadah, Glenelg Football Club, Somerset Hotel Motel, Klas Bilt, In2 Trophies Monogramming & Workwear, Collins Court Butchers, Tony Pasin, Troy Bell, Nick McBride, Willow Financial Services, Hyland & Fox Signs, & DiGiorgio Family Wines.
So, where possible please consider our sponsors when you need anything, and then thank them for their support of our league.
The Presenta ons for Seniors and Juniors was once again a combined affair with our Netball partners held at the Millicent War Memorial Civic and Arts Centre. The day ran smoothly and we will con nue to consult with clubs to seek ideas for any suggested improvements. Thank you to the Robe Football / Netball Club for catering to the a endees superbly
Congratula ons to Mail Medal winner Port MacDonnell's Josh Woodall, Reserves Carthew Medal winner Hatherleigh's Ethan Bowman, Senior Colts Malseed Medal winner Tantanoola's Cade Kelly and Junior Colts Mansell Medal winner Glencoe's Kallan Price and all other trophy winners.
Please remember, as clubs, to look a er your volunteers and as supporters, to assist and volunteer your me / skills wherever possible to make your Club more successful and to share the workload. It really does help your club commi ees to know that they can rely on some jobs being handled – so well done to all volunteers that have assisted each club and in turn assisted the League in becoming stronger. The League and all clubs can become much be er with more 'Givers'' and less 'Takers''.
Thanks to all those people that have assisted me as President, especially all of the Senior Board Dennis Muhovics, Trevor Ling, Jo Michelmore, Jo Dean, Michael Houston & Naomi Mitchell along with the Junior Execu ve Graham Dowie, Gary Wilson, Steve McCann, Dylan Clough Umpires Director Neil Webber. All have worked well as a team and I hope we have delivered the needs and requirements of Clubs. The Board has been willing to share the heavy administra ve workload and I especially thank
my wife, Naomi Mitchell in her role as League Assistant Secretary. I urge all clubs that are not currently represented to consider nomina ng a delegate to the Execu ve. There is a requirement for someone with the following skill sets; liaising with the media with reports, IT skills, diplomacy, level headedness and to occasionally think outside of the square in looking at opportuni es and solu ons to the many issues that seem to raise their heads during every season. Thank you to friends and family that assisted in any way that you did. Thank you to all clubs that made me and all Board members welcome throughout the year. To those that provided any feedback on how the Board can be of be er assistance to Clubs, thank you.
As always, there will be sec ons of the Cons tu on / Bylaws, which need to be reviewed, and I urge all clubs to submit any suggested amendments to the Board for considera on.
We appreciate the support of Murray South East Regional Director and Community Football Board director Sco Duncan, SANFL SE Football Opera ons Co-ordinator Michael Mourbey, staff at the Community Football Board, and SANFL South East Regional Game Development Officer Heath Sims. Our rela onship with the Glenelg Football Club con nues to evolve and the opportunity for our young footballers at U18 & U16 levels has seen good numbers of footballers regularly travelling to be involved at the next level. This creates wonderful opportuni es for them to con nue their football journey
Our final crowds have so far have been excellent and shows that the interest in the MSEFL is the equal of any compe on in this region. The mix of mul ple clubs involved in football and netball final contests has helped to increase crowd numbers and add to the atmosphere at the ground.
Our football and netball region con nues to face a number of challenges to our stable environment. From my perspec ve, our League and clubs need to ensure that we stay united and are abreast of these outside pressures to make sure that we con nue to be in the best posi on possible going forward. Change at any level presents us with opportuni es and threats, so it is challenging mes ahead for all Clubs and the League. We must ensure that we con nue to work together, con nue to focus on our core objec ves in our clubs and League which include Facili es, Junior Development, Volunteers, Financial Stability, Risk Management and Community Ties, strive for con nuous improvement, and con nue to meet our market place, offer opportuni es for our volunteers and youth in order for all of us to remain viable, sustainable and relevant to our communi es well into the future. We s ll find ourselves in a situa on where we are s ll faced with uncertainty and the very real prospect of change that will impact our clubs and League. We must make sure that our voices are heard and that any change ensures the long term sustainability of all our clubs and our League is maintained and enhanced.
Finally, a big thank you to all partners and family of the Board to allow them the me necessary for mee ng their obliga ons to our clubs at various mes throughout the year with mee ngs etc. Special thanks to my family, all have put up with a lot throughout the year and your support is much appreciated for all that I'm involved in.
Remember that not everyone can win on the field, but we must all be winners off the field.
There will be some great netball and football contests in every grade today where seven of our nine clubs are represented and I hope that all players and supporters have some special memories of 'that one day in September'.
Be kind to each other and I hope that you have a great Grand Final Day and a safe trip home.
Peter MitchellWelcome to Grand Final Day at Port MacDonnell for the 2023 Mid South Eastern Football and Netball Leagues.
Well, where has the year gone? I can s ll unfortunately remember the horrendous weather we endured at last years Grand Final. In extremely trying condi ons for both players and supporters I must congratulate the Kalangadoo Football and Netball Clubs on their hos ng of the day. In what can only be described as horrible, we managed to get through the day rela vely unscathed, albeit wet and cold. Depending on which side of the game day ledger you were on, the condi ons were either irrelevant or made an already ordinary day unbearable. At the me of wri ng, the weather Gods were finally going to play the game and give us some decent weather in which to close out our 2023 season and I certainly hope that this is s ll the case today
To the reason why we are here todayCongratula ons to all compe ng football and netball teams who have made it here today for the 'Big Dance'. You have shown that you are the best two sides in each of your respec ve grades and even though only one of you will walk away with a premiership, your par cipa on in our final match of the year is s ll something to celebrate and be proud of Congratula ons to all our medal and award winners who took home individual honours at our presenta ons. To Josh Woodall (Port MacDonnell) who has obviously se led into his new role as playing coach with ease, took out our Mail Medal. To young gun Ethan Bowman (Hatherleigh), a previous Malseed Medal winner, showed his class in taking out this year's Carthew Reserves Medal. Cade Kelly became the first player to take out three junior Best & Fairest Awards when he was awarded the Senior Colts Malseed Medal for the second me (previously won it in 2021 with Ethan Bowman) and to Kallan Price (Glencoe) who had a very consistent season was awarded the Mansell Medal as the junior colt best & fairest. Kallan's father Adam Price is also a previous Mansell Medal winner and I'm guessing the Glencoe Football Club will be hoping for another stellar career in the same manner as Adam's.
Thank you and well done to the Robe Football and Netball clubs and all their volunteers for their catering, set-up and pack-up of the day
Special thanks to our final hosts so far this year in Hatherleigh, Tantanoola and Robe. The change in our by-laws now allows for the final venues to be scheduled without the need to alter them due to an A Grade side compe ng. This provides both certainty to the League and all nine clubs as to when it's their turn to host a final. Each final has been very well managed and this is a credit to your leadership and the many volunteers all our clubs rely on.
To Cathie Williams and the Port MacDonnell Football and Netball Clubs thank you for your organisa on and coordina on of today's season finale. I am 100% certain that the day will be a huge success for both the Club and the League and an ideal opportunity to showcase the unique atmosphere that is Mid South East Footy
This year it was our turn to sit out of the Senior Interleague compe on but we did
have our underage sides compete at Bordertown. Both our underage sides con nue to improve at this level, and this is largely due to all our club coaches, both junior and senior. We have a vast knowledge base of coaches within our League and it is really pleasing to see them come together over the me of interleague trainings and game day to improve the experience for all players. To our junior interleague coaches in Reece Duncan (17's) and Chris Mules (15's) thank you for your me and dedica on you provided to give the best in our league the opportunity to represent the MSEFL.
To the players and officials that where selected to play for the South East Zone team at the SA Country Championships - Mitch Lowe and Ben Gregory (Kalangadoo), Wade Chant and Colby Munro (Port MacDonnell) and Kallan Bevan (Mount Burr), officials Ben McGregor (Port MacDonnell) Assistant Coach, Sam Benne (Hatherleigh) Trainer and Peter Mitchell (League) Team Manager, congratula ons on your selec on and although winning both minor round matches on the Saturday missed out on a finals berth on percentage. This le the playing group feeling a li le flat Saturday night and subsequently finished 4th overall a er a disappoin ng game Sunday
To the League Board in Peter, Dennis, Trevor, Jo Michelmore and Jo Dean thank you for your commitment to our League. Without people willing to put club loyalty aside for the be erment of our league we simply wouldn't be in the strong posi on we currently are.
To the Junior League Execu ve – Graham Dowie, Gary "Tug" Wilson, Dylan Clough and Steve McCann thank you on another well run year
Our “Family League” is a unique rela onship between both football and netball. Thank you to Sara and all Netball Execu ve for your commitment to ac vely promo ng strong rela onships between football and netball, may we con nue to develop them at League level se ng a good example for our clubs to follow. It has been a pleasure working with you all this year
Congratula ons to both Sara Gray and Jacqui Cocks on being awarded Life Membership of the Mid South East Netball Associa on – a very well deserved honour for the reless and diligent efforts you have provided to Netball over a long period of me.
I must also give my thanks to Michael Mourbey our South East SANFL Football Opera ons co-ordinator. Michael con nues to undertake a great deal of weekly administra ve and behind the scenes work for all three south east leagues and has definitely made a difference to the at mes administra ve overload we are expected to accomplish.
To the biggest ques on in South East football this year – what is going to happen with football in the region? This subject has dominated board rooms, club rooms and Can Hill/Stubby Booths for the en re season. Yet, as we arrive today at season's end, we are s ll none the wiser ! One thing is for certain – the Mid South Eastern Football League is here to stay, and we are not at all interested in the purported and ridiculous no on of a 15 team league that was ini ally proposed. This
message has been repeated and echoed not only from the Board but also from clubs, players and supporters. The truth is, we differ demographically from our closest neighbouring league, and our ghtknit community culture reinforces our commitment to one another on and off the field. We are ready to defend the values we hold dear. Each of our clubs holds equal importance within our structure; we stand as equals off the field. With this perspec ve in mind, I firmly believe that the Mid South Eastern Football League will withstand the external pressures that may jeopardise some of our clubs, either through dissolu on or merger. Next year, it will be business as usual for us, maintaining our unity and purpose. As for the rest, they can please themselves! This year it was my ini al inten on to step back from the official Secretary's role upon the appointment of a new incoming League Secretary. However, as the saying goes, you can take the Secretary out of the League, but you can't take the League out of the Secretary!! I s ll found myself doing the work almost by habit and clubs also found it challenging in connec ng with someone new who lacked the knowledge and understanding of how a football league operates. Given the addi onal uncertain es surround the future of football in the South East, it became evident that we needed stability and a strong advocate for our League. The upcoming off season presents an opportunity for both the Board and myself to reflect and reevaluate and seek a viable solu on for the way forward.
To my close and extended family, who con nuously lend a helping hand and tolerate so much, expressing gra tude feels inadequate, even if I were to say it a thousand mes. Both Dad and I wouldn't be able to achieve what we do without your unwavering support and the occasional piece of wisdom, whether we ask for it or not. I'm immensely proud of each one of you for evolving into compassionate, considerate, and occasionally outspoken young adults.
Today as we play, support or just watch our great game please be mindful and respec ul of those around us. Be assured that all par cipants are trying their very best to assist their team to win and the nega ve and unhelpful commentary from the sidelines will do li le in achieving the objec ve. I am also yet to see an umpire change his decision because of the advice being offered from the boundary line. Please remember that umpires are doing a job so that we can play our great game, no umpires – no game.
And to all the players, par cipa ng in a grand final is an incredible journey, a memory that will stay with you forever. Always keep in mind the broader perspec ve and the collec ve teamwork that brought you to this moment. Give your all, unleash your poten al and embrace the unique atmosphere created just for you. We eagerly an cipate watching you shine on the field.
Enjoy your day,
Naomi Mitchellumpire director’s REPORT
Welcome to sunny Port MacDonnell and the prospect of four thrilling games of football.
I must commend the Port MacDonnell Football Club and the wider community for their outstanding dedica on and hard work this year, which has their playing surface in excellent condi on. Everyone involved should be jus fiably proud of their efforts.
Thank you to the League Execu ve for the support they con nue to give me as Umpires Director. It's not always an easy task, but the league's confidence in suppor ng me to develop and teach our umpire panel, especially in these mes of dwindling numbers, is truly reassuring.
To all my wonderful umpires for their con nued support and assistance throughout the season thank you. Your dedica on and commitment has been outstanding and it certainly helps to keep my stress levels moderate.
The excellent support we have received from club officials has been outstanding, from providing refreshments a er the games to supplying club umpires. We understand that this can be demanding at mes, but please know that your efforts are very much valued and deeply appreciated.
Looking ahead, the challenges of next year and beyond are evident, as we face a growing shortage of umpires, a concern shared by all within our league. We may soon find ourselves with just enough to supply A Grade, placing renewed pressure on club officials. Therefore, now is the me to approach re red players and encourage them to consider taking up umpiring.
To my wonderful, caring and understanding wife Kath, thank you for consistently being my rock, offering construc ve advice, and providing unwavering support in this o en stressful role, I truly could not do this role without your support.
A huge thank you to my goal umpires for their outstanding support during the final series. Your contribu ons have been excep onal. And to all the boundary umpires who have performed admirably in at mes challenging condi ons throughout the finals, thank you for all that you have done and I have no doubt you will con nue to excel today. Finally, I'd like to wish all the umpires the best of luck today. Your appointments reflect your performances throughout the year. Some may have missed out, while others are officia ng in their first grand final. Regardless, keep up the excellent work and savour the unique atmosphere that comes with umpiring on grand final day.
Let's s ck together to keep our wonderful Family League going, as we truly have an excellent League.
Neil WebberThe MSEJFL were once again excited to be a part of the Limestone Coast Regional Carnival which was held in Bordertown against rivals in WBFL & KNTFL. It's always a highlight of the calendar and it allows our brightest and upcoming talent to pool together and play representa ve football but also create friendships along the way that they will look back in later years fondly 2023 saw MSE retain both coaches from 2022 and this provided the players with some addi onal experience with both coaches having now played and coached at this level and are passionate about seeing our league compete and be compe ve at the highest level.
The U15's were led by Chris Mules who's record in all levels of football speak for itself and was very closely assisted by Brad Auld who has played at the highest-level mul ple mes. Coaches had a task this year in selec ng their final squad and looked to be one of the more even and stronger squads in recent years and we were excited to see what the carnival would bring. Game 1 saw us up against a KNT ou it that we looked evenly matched with across the ground. From the outset the boys looked very se led and managed to get going quickly with some slick ball movement and u lised the long open ground to advantage. The backline held strong in the first half repelling the ball constantly allowing our midfielders to go to work. This saw us with a narrow 3 point lead at the half. The second half we looked to go back into our shell somewhat and loose the a acking brand from the 1st half yet we remained in the game and had several opportuni es to steal it late but in the end went down by 10 points. Best players game 1 – Lachy Brierley, Kane Gilbert, Charlie Bevan, Ryan Lucas, Nate Von Stanke-Dowie & Kai Gilmore. Game 2 up against a very slick WB ou it that jumped us early in the first half but to our boy's credit managed a goal in the 1st half which seem to spark them a li le. The second half we were a lot more compe ve, registering a couple of goals ourselves and holding WB to only a few majors with the final score 11-6 to 3-1. Best players game 2, Casey Wilson, Lachy Brierley, Charlie Bevan, Nate Von Stanke-
Congratula ons to Lachy Brierley MSE Player of the Carnival and to Lachy, Charlie, Nate, Casey & Kane in making the Team of the Carnival.
U17's saw Reece Duncan at the helm for the 3rd year running and this year was assisted by very well creden aled senior colts coach in Jed Telfer. The squad was li ered with talented players with majority having played senior footy on a regular basis and a select few compe ng in Glenelg teams.
Game 1 we were up against a very much larger side across the ground in KNT. They jumped out of the blocks early in the first half meaning our midfield and defenders had to work hard for the 22mins but there were some passages of play where we managed to control the ball and pepper the goals but could only manage a couple of behinds for the half. The second half we seem to get our running game going, li in intensity and used the long ground to our advantage while also holding KNT back and this saw us outscore them in the second half and build confidence going into the second game with the final scores 8-2 to 37. Best players Cade Kelly, Kallan Bevan, Ellis Cushion, Connor Gen le & Braydn Hateley
Game 2 up against WB was a very even contest for the first half as both sides ba led hard and were very evenly matched over the ground. This made for some quality footy and good passages of play as we went into the half me break only 3 points down. The second half was a repeat of the first as no team wanted to give an inch and we had more than our share of the ball all over the ground but could only manage the 1 gaol to WB 2 to go down in a very ght contest by 10 points. Best players game 2 – Kallan Bevan, Connor Gen le, Cade Kelly, Ellis Cushion, Zeb Chant & Braydn Hateley
Congratula ons to Kallan Bevan who was awarded the U17 Player of the Carnival Aware, MSE Player of the Carnival and to Kallan, Cade, Connor, Ellis, Brayden & Flynn Peel in making the team of the carnival.
Overall it was one of our best performances
at the carnival in both grades and we should be buoyed looking to the future as these young footballers con nue to keep plying their cra and developing into our next crop of senior footballers.
Carnivals like these wouldn't be possible without countless volunteers like our trainers in Erica Hurley & Sam Benne along with team managers, mekeepers, goal umpires and those who run water, so a big thank you to each and everyone of you.
Special thanks to our Interleague Sponsors in First Super & Belgravia Apparel and to Addie at The Rocks Shop for providing drinks to all players across the three leagues.
Leading up to the carnival both Mt Burr and Glencoe allowed us to u lise their facili es and this is greatly appreciated.
Of course, the game doesn't happen without umpires and as with all carnivals we had Umpires from across the three leagues pu ng their hands up to officiate over the weekend.
A big shout out to the parents and families who have supported the players in ge ng them to trainings and to Bordertown, along with our 9 clubs in suppor ng players to represent our league.
A personal thank you to Macca, Cloughy, Tug and Naomi as members of the Junior Execu ve along with the Senior Exec as it makes life a lot easier having many hands to share the load to make everything happen behind the scenes especially on a day like it was Saturday with so much to organise.
To all the Mid South Eastern Football league players, thank you for pu ng your hand up and the commitment in represen ng not only the league but club & family and we hope you enjoyed the challenge of playing representa ve football. I would like to wish players all the best for the remainder of the season and hope that they will look back at their me playing representa ve football fondly and con nue to work on their footy cra .
