As the 2023 football and netball season commences today, I take this opportunity to welcome all exis ng and new players, supporters and sponsors to our Family League.
Well last year was another challenging year learning to live with Covid and it would seem that there will be similar challenges for this season and for all our football and netball communi es. Thank you to all clubs for working together and doing what was necessary to ensure we kept our communi es safe and ul mately allowed us to complete the season. So more so than with each year, all clubs will need to con nue to work together where possible for the be erment of football and netball to ensure that all clubs remain strong and viable on and off the field as there will be some changes coming in 2024.
The Sco Group of Companies have been involved for many years as a great supporter of our League and have informed us that they will not be con nuing into 2023, however I thank them for their con nuous support since 2006. I thank them along with all of our other sponsors for their wonderful support of our league. Please refer to a list of our sponsors within the budget and where possible please consider using our sponsors when you need anything, and also please remember to thank them for their support of our league.
The Board membership con nues as per 2022 which includes Peter Mitchell, Dennis Muhovics (Vice President), Trevor Ling, Jo Michelmore and Jo Dean. We have a new Secretary in Michael Houston – Welcome Michael to the Family League! Naomi Mitchell will assist as Assistant Secretary and gradually complete a full hand over to Michael during the season. Please remember that our job on the Board is to assist clubs and make your lives easier, where possible!
Neil Webber has been appointed as Umpires Director for his twel h season. The Umpires are again on the lookout for any interested people, male or female, that may want to become an umpire. We are s ll asking for any recently re red players that would like to be s ll involved in the game to consider umpiring to keep fit, give back to the game and perhaps get to know some of the players and club people from a different perspec ve. Due to Covid 19, our aging umpires panel have lost a number of regular umpires and it is concerning to the Board that it may have to call on club umpires for all reserves games and possibly some under 17 games as well. I wish Neil the best and I know that a number of other senior umpires will assist throughout the year. Neil may s ll require two players from the club that has a bye to be available to umpire each week. This was well supported and assisted with umpiring numbers each week and will con nue this year. We have also asked all clubs to supply the League with the name of one person that may be able to assist
umpiring if required due to a shortage of umpire availability. Who knows, maybe we may get some current players that may take up umpiring a er they have finished playing? The League has s ll available an Umpires Scholarship program to encourage and reward new central umpires and we hope it will provide a pathway to bolster our ageing umpire panel. The League would love to hear from those that have just re red as footballers and even our younger males and females that have a love of the game and would like to be involved.
Michael Mourbey con nues as the SE Football Opera ons Co-ordinator and his role is to provide support for clubs and Leagues as well as taking on some of the administra ve tasks of the Leagues. We think that this is a posi ve step for Football in the South East and look forward to some more posi ve outcomes with the addi onal resource as well as the support of the SANFL Community Football.
The MSEFL Board in conjunc on with WBFL & KNTFL will con nue to operate the SANFL Tribunal system with a panel of commissioners selected from the three leagues. The Board believe this will assist with consistency and uniformity across the tribunal process, with clear set guidelines in place and having one person, Michael Mourbey following up with all reports to offer set penal es or straight to Tribunal if deemed to be severe.
We look forward to working closely with the Netball Associa on with President Sara Gray and her commi ee throughout the year in the many joint ventures that we work on.
MSEFL Representa ve matches against our neighbouring Leagues will be played in the KNTFL at Bordertown. The Zone Carnival will be played on Saturday 10 June with a Senior match between WBFL & KNTFL & also U15 & U17 matches between MSEFL, WBFL & KNTFL. We will not have a senior interleague this season as it is our turn in the rota on to miss. Once again, we are pleased to offer the chance for our juniors to play at a higher level and represent the League against our neighbouring Leagues. Graham Dowie heads up the Junior League as President and will be assisted by last year's Execu ve member Gary (Tug) Wilson and new Execu ve members in Steve McCann and Dylan Clough. A major challenge for the boys is co-ordina ng the junior teams for the SE Zone Carnival U17 & U15, which is to be held at Bordertown in the KNTFL on the Sunday of the long weekend in June. Once again, I’m pleased that the League can offer this opportunity for more of our juniors to be involved at a higher level. An ongoing role for the Junior Execu ve is to assist those clubs that are struggling with junior player numbers to ensure that we con nue to have games in all grades. Con nue the good work fellas and thanks for your con nuing commitment to assist out clubs in promo ng and
developing our junior footballers. Thanks to all the media outlets for the coverage our league receives and we look forward to another exci ng season in 2023. On behalf of the League and all clubs thank you to all the wonderful volunteers that assist each week. If you don’t currently volunteer for your club, then please consider assis ng with your me / skills wherever possible to make your Club more successful and to share the workload. Volunteering is a great way to meet people and improve your skills as well as knowing that you have done something good to assist your club – so don’t hold back! Challenges have never been greater for clubs as we face uncertainty with changes happening in neighbouring Leagues and the many con nual policy changes from Government, AFL & other insurance requirements that place extra burdens on our volunteers and with the current COVID 19 plans and protocols. The three core areas that is consistently affec ng Leagues and Clubs in SA Country is low junior player numbers, lack of new volunteers and shortage of umpires (an ageing body of football lovers). It is so important for all clubs to try and spread the work load required, have well developed procedures and have mul ple people skilled to handle a variety of tasks. Our Clubs and League must all ensure that we have our house in order, revisit our strategic plans and develop or strengthen exis ng strategies to prosper and grow. Con nue to focus on core ac vi es within our clubs such as – Facili es, Junior Development, Volunteers, Financial Stability, Risk Management and Community es. This is where clubs need to u lise the full- me resource available from SANFL in Michael Mourbey to assist where he can in providing necessary support to lighten the load on volunteers. Michael can't do everything, but he can assist! All Clubs and the League need to build on our strengths and iden fy any weaknesses to implement remedia on plans to allow for con nuous improvement. We must con nue to ensure that Football clubs are the leaders in our communi es and build stronger partnerships and rela onships with all of our stakeholders. Also remember that it is so important that when you finish volunteering at your club that you leave it in a be er posi on than when you joined!
On behalf of the Board, we wish all clubs the best of luck for the season and also look forward to common sense and fairness being displayed at all mes in the Family League. Please stay safe and enjoy the compe ons and social ou ngs our wonderful League offers.

Welcome to season 2023. Congratula ons again to our Junior Colts premiership team from 2022, well done one and all. Thanks also to our commi ees, both senior and junior, the grounds commi ee, and everyone in between, that keep the club cking along, prepares for game days, trainings, fundraisers, etc. Many hours are done, all for no financial gain to the individuals, but contributes immensely to the club and the efforts of these people does not go unno ced. A few new faces on the commi ee this year with Zara Von Stanke taking on the memberships, so if you don’t have one yet, catch up with Zara asap. Ryan Brant and Andrew Janeway, adding more depth to our already strong group.
The Kongorong Women’s Senior Football team play off in the Grand Final tomorrow (Sunday 16th April) at Vansi art Park, so get along and support the girls and ‘Porridge’. Reward for their efforts over the past four seasons, to grow as a side and develop as a team. Well done and good luck. The club extends a very warm welcome to all the new families, players, and supporters, as well as those that have returned to the home of the Mighty Hawks for 2023. Recruitment over the summer has seen many new faces, who are all working hard and gelling well with the team. Seniors are again led by Cam Sandercock, with Tony Elletson heading up the Reserves, where he has a good list of players to choose from, and hoping for consistency at training and results on the scoreboard.
Je A ard, assisted by Brad Cordy, con nues on in the role of Senior Colts coach. Some good numbers and new faces in the side, we’re excited to see how this group perform. Ma y Maidment, and assistant Mark Paech, heads up the coaching posi on for the Junior Colts. A number of players stepping up from U11’s this year, and excited for the season ahead.
Rob Whi y, assisted by Ross Stevens, has again taken charge of the Under 11’s and the Auskickers and is doing a fantas c job teaching the enthusias c youngsters the basic skills in their first years of footy
Off field, the club is excited to be installing a new electronic scoreboard, along with the new gate keepers’ shelter (in memory of long me Kongorong resident Lorna Barry), and a number of smaller projects around the place, which will all enhance the players/supporters experience on
game days. Many thanks to all the volunteers that make these projects come to frui on.
A big shout out to all the volunteers that help on game day, from team managers, mekeepers, canteen and stubby shed workers, to runners, goal umpires, and all roles in between. Clubs can’t func on without volunteers, so if you haven’t been asked to fill a role throughout the year, please volunteer your services, see Jacqui for a canteen spot, Ryan for a stubby shed spot, or any commi ee member
Thank you to all our sponsors, big or small, your support is greatly appreciated, and we hope to see you all at Sponsor’s Day on the 17th June.
The Kongorong Community Bus arrived in late October and has been busy ever since. A great asset to the community and one which we will u lise to ensure all our people get home safely
Today we head to Kalangadoo to kick the season off and look forward to some great games of football. Wishing all our players, both football and netball, every success this season.

It is with great pleasure that we announce our coaching appointments for this year. New Rooster and Robe local Nathan Brown is leading our Senior side with assistance from Ma hew Bryant, Jaryd Dawson and Jason Pe t on the bench. Browny and family have immersed themselves in the community with their warmth and approachability and we are excited to watch Nathans reless work ethic influence the en re group. Working closely with Nathan and team is new Reserves coach Anthony Kokiousis with assistance from Roly Day. Good Senior numbers this year have seen a solid preseason and healthy compe on for A Grade spots which is great for the club and the community
Our Junior Commi ee has reappointed Sam Huebner as coach of the Senior Colts for 2023 and also welcomes club stalwart and footy legend Chris ‘Bucko’ McLay as coach of the Junior Colts. Chris has been a long serving Principal at the Robe Primary School and his firm kindness, belief in skills and drills and understanding of football will go a long way to plan ng some great seeds in our club.
Assis ng Bucko in the kid wrangling department are another couple of Rooster legends in Trevor Ling and Ben Jess. Our smallest Roosters will be managed by Ma Aus n, Casey Sharpe, Adam Brooks and Jack Edwards. Thankyou to all of our junior leaders and parents who are stepping up into mentoring roles. With the fragility of Community Football front and centre this year, it is glaringly evident that clubs must focus on building, retaining and upskilling junior numbers. Excellence in junior development relies on great volunteers, if anyone else wishes to get involved please contact myself or Junior President Adrian Johns at any me.
We are very pleased to announce our commi ee members for the year:
President – Debra Mackey
Vice President – Roger Sweetman
Secretary – Breanna Ferguson
Treasurer – Deb Sweetman
Commi ee – Jacob Nicholson, Jim Thring, Geoff Prest, Stephen Gibbons, Susan Clements, Roly Day and Jack Sneath.

Those of you who visited Robe during last finals season will be happy to hear about the la er
New ini a ves in communica on with our present members and past players and officials will solidify and con nue the growth of the club and a focus on the quality of our junior coaches and mentors secures our grass roots growth.
Congratula ons also to our netball club commi ee and players for their growth this off season. Great numbers at the courts reflects those on the field and we look forward to suppor ng each other throughout the year.

We would like to thank our match day sponsors whom have come on board to make this day possible and the work put in by all those involved to get the game up and running.
the reserves and we look forward to a con nued improvement from these guys. With the added depth that we have gained this year we should see a push towards playing some finals footy again. Get behind Butch and his team and show them your support.
Josh Smith has put his hand up to take on the Senior Colts this year and whilst s ll a bit light on numbers wise we have a bigger core group of players and we will con nue to build. If you know of any poten al players let Josh know and we will chase them up.

We also appreciate our yearly sponsors both those who return this year and those whom have a new associa on with the club. It takes a lot to run a club these days and it wouldn’t be possible without the help of the community Your support towards the club is invaluable and we look forward to working with you all.
The club this year welcomes Shane (Taz) Raymond as our senior coach for the season. He has done a power of work so far to put together and build a great bunch of guys who are striving to con nue our build and climb back up the ladder. I’m sure we are going to enjoy watching some great compe ve footy this year. Taz has been able to en ce a number of new players and we welcome them all on board along with those whom are returning from previous years.
Butch returns as the coach of
Marcus Thomson has stepped into the Junior Colts coach’s role and has some reasonable numbers but also looking for some more to join us. These guys will be a bit on the smaller side but I’m sure will be giving there all throughout the year. Both these guys I’m sure would be happy for anyone to put their hand up and assist with the many jobs each week.
A great deal of work has been put in so far over the preseason and today sees the day that the effort put in can start to be rewarded.
Once again welcome all to both our club and the 2023 season. We hope that you enjoy the ride and jump on board the journey with us. If you can spare some me there are plenty of jobs that we require done each week so if you can help out even for a short me let us know.
Here’s to a great 2023.

Kalangadoo Kongorong v
Round one of the MSENA season sees Kalangadoo host the Hawks. The Magpies have had a major shi in players this season, with many new recruits making their way up the ranks and into the A Grade team. Experienced players Abbey Duncan, Lauren Kain and Jayde Peacock will need to lead their team from their respec ve areas of the court to create seamless passages of play. Kongorong have also had a slight to change to their line up from the 2022 season and will be relying on Tilah Buckingham's shoo ng strength paired with accurate feeding from outside the circle by Kate Wright. It is too early in the season to say who will come away with the win, but this game will be tough for both teams as they se le their sides.
Tantanoola Robe v
The Roosters head to Tantanoola to face off in the first match of the round for the 2023 season. Both teams finished in the top four last year and have remained rela vely unchanged coming into the new season. Tantanoola's goalies Jami Walker and Emma Gould combine well in the goal circle and shoot with accuracy, meaning that Robe's Emma Grant and Georgia Perkins will need to work to limit opportuni es for the Tigers to get the ball into the circle. Down the other end of the court Tori Gluyas returns to the court for the Roosters, joining Halle Carter in the goal circle, where they will feel the pressure from Tant's Kate Bromley and Tayla Rowe. This game will be a terrific start to the season for both teams.
Nangwarry Mount Burr v
14 George Street, Millicent 5280
Ph: 0400 221 357
Follows us on Facebook & Instagram
www.idmsports.com.au
Mount Burr head to Nangwarry to play the first game of the season, facing off against a mostly new Saints team. Mount Burr return to the 2023 season with their strong defensive combina on of Madi Hagge and Olivia Dean who are able to accurately read the ball and work well together, making it hard for Nangwarry's goalies. Hayley Vanderhorst will return to the court for the Saints this season a er an injury last year and is able to play down either end of the court to combine with Cassie Dinnison in the goal circle, or Demi Hoffmeister in defence. MSENA 2022 Best and Fairest winner Laura Schultz will help lead the Mozzies in their first game of the season from the midcourt, using her experience to guide the younger players in the side. Servicing
Port MacDonnell Glencoe v
The reigning premiers head to the Bay to start the season, hoping to get a win under their belts. However, the Demons will u lise their strength through playing coach Megan Hein in goals and the skill of Alana Berkefeld in the defensive circle. Glencoe's mostly unchanged premiership side will u lise their experienced players through each sec on of the court in Jenna Paproth, Donna Jaeschke and Chantelle Cocks. Port MacDonnell's new recruit Kori Collins may also prove to be an important part of their shoo ng line up, especially when paired with Hein. This game will prove to be a close one, with both teams ba ling for the win.
