GAME PREVIEW DEMONS FACE ULTIMATE BATTLE IN ANZAC DAY CLASH The 2021 Bendigo Bank Western Border Football League enters one of the highlights of the calendar this weekend as players celebrate the ANZAC Day spirit in round 3. As usual the special round is headlined by the annual ANZAC Day ba le between South and North Gambier, but fans will also enjoy a huge weekend of football with three important games spread across Saturday and Sunday. South Gambier v North Gambier The round will finish with a bang as South and North Gambier resume their ANZAC Day rivalry and a hard-fought ba le between the sides can be expected to match the special occasion. With the last post and numerous ceremonies enhancing the atmosphere, emo ons always li , but there is a lot on the line when these two sides clash at Blue Lake Sports Park. The Demons have impressed everyone by recording two strong wins over Millicent and West Gambier with a blitzing style of play to open the season and claim the ladder lead. But their ul mate acid test awaits with the first of two huge games this weekend. Despite winning the last game against the Tigers, South has struggled to shine on ANZAC Day and coach Brayden Kain is keen to change that record. “We have only won one ANZAC Day game in the seven or eight years since I have been at the club, so we want to turn that ledger around and get one back on them,” he said. “It is always a massive honour and privilege to run out on ANZAC Day and hos ng the game is something we are really looking forward to as a club. “It should be a great ba le against a benchmark team in North and a good test to see where we are at as a group.” The Tigers enter the big game with a patchier record a er two contras ng home games.

Jus n McConnell’s men looked peerless smashing Casterton Sandford before being on the losing side of an arm wrestle with East Gambier. North’s first road trip could not be a bigger occasion, but the side’s experience and class means it will not be fazed by the situa on. However, Kain believed the vast surrounds of Blue Lake Sports Park helped his side outrun the Roos last week and his men hope to do the same to the Tigers.
All eyes will be on Gene Robinson in Millicent ’s forward line a er his nine-goal haul, while Sam Willis has also risen to another level.
If the Demons do emerge victorious, there will be no doub ng their premiership creden als.
East Gambier v Casterton Sandford The voyage across the border this Saturday n i g ht fo r C a ste r to n S a n d fo rd co u l d metaphorically appear as daun ng as the Kokoda Trail.
West Gambier v Millicent The Roos and Saints have a lot to prove when they lock horns at Malseed Park this Saturday. With the home ground advantage and strong recent head-to-head record, West should be favourites, but it is not that simple. The Roos are yet to win a game in 2021, but have done so valiantly, while Millicent is s ll riding the high of its first victory in two and a half years. West needs to taste success soon before it is too late, while the Saints are keen to show they can fight for finals and prove last week was no fluke. Injury issues also come into play with the home side missing the services of Steven Wenman, while the visitors have lost Kane Bradley (knee) and Caleb Williams (shoulder) in consecu ve weeks. Although the Roos smashed Millicent by 97 points in the previous clash at Malseed Park, Saints’ coach Clint Gallio an cipates a much ghter contest this year. “West is on their home deck, but we are coming off a decent win, so it is a bit of an unknown,” he said. “The compe on is going to be so even this year, so we are super keen to get in and will be ready to go.”
West is less reliant on individuals with many names able to stand up around the ground and Ben Papps kicked six majors in his last appearance at home with the Saints.
The Cats have struggled to produce a fourquarter performance in 2021 and are yet to win a game, while East Gambier has knocked off both of the 2019 WBFL grand finalists. However, Bulldogs’ coach Ma Willson said not everything is in his side’s favour when they host the Victorians in a twilight clash this Saturday night. “We are confident we can play some good footy, but Casterton is always a hard side,” he said. “You can never take them lightly because they have some quality players and like to put up a fight. “We are also playing a twilight fixture this week and Casterton has it over us in twilight and night games so it will be a very good challenge for us to step up in an environment where they have had the wood over us in the last few years.” The game will kick off from 4pm.

West Gambier Blue & Red Well what a tough day at the office we had last Saturday. We came up against a very strong south ou it in all grades who showed us the way. Our 14s kicked us off with a good solid effort. The boys kept working hard and registered on the scoreboard in the last and kept South goalless in the 3rd Quarter. Our best players where Koby Stratman leading from the front. Tate Hammond, Reece Barre , Silas Bowden and Brodie Szopory rounding out our best players. The players have another South side Wednesday night then Millicent at home Saturday looking to bounce back. The 16s started of good with playing good football in the first Quarter. We lapsed in the 2nd and 3rd Quarter to finish strongly with a great last quarter our scoring a strong South side. Brad Cowling con nues his good form with best player followed by Mith Cornolo, Nate Davey, Bryce Cowling and Max Byfieldt. The boys will regroup and bounce back against south on Wednesday night followed by Millicent on Saturday. With limited numbers in the 18s with a lot of boys away, injuries and some playing A grade, makes for a tough job against the best. But the boys with the support of 6 under 16s put on a great effort and fought it out to the end. The scoreboard does not reflect some of the great work they done with heavy legs and skill errors hur ng in the last hurdle. 3 goals in the second half a er being scoreless in the first half shows the never die a tude required. Jack Carson with a heart of pharlap never stops and pu ng his hand up for a crack at senior football. Shar nay than with under 16s Hamish Case and Mitch Cornolo and Sjaakie Duievenoorde rounding out our best side. Hopefully get a few players back this week to tackle another strong side. Nathan Lewis has had a hard ini a on into the coaching world as he was s ll

finding players to have a kick before the game. Rumours swirled around BLSP that Billy Ray had his gear in the car, and was pu ng a lot of pressure on Nathan for a run. Thankfully common sense prevailed, and Nathan took the safer op on of playing a man down. In what was a terrible hard day for the players again the gave it there all and never stopped. Big Kiwi Ben Loef keeps on keeping on with Best on ground with Arron heron, Tom Mcourt, Sam Vonduve and Callum Hein the other best players. The A grade took the field with another first gamer in “Eski” ge ng his opportunity. Eski played the I’m not nervous card all day but le his boots at west and was by wearing his shorts he had in the under 12s. In tough condi ons and a hard slog against some tough opposi on we started slow which hurt us in the end. Our second half was good and the boys rallied and got within 7 points in the last. Every player contributed in the game. Kyle moved from Half back to onballer in the second half and was great with his pressure to be named best player. Aden Pfitzner also given a different role chased around the class of south and worked for second best. Big Brayden Olds was great at given us first op on in the ruck, Jordan Williams con nues his great start the season with another great game on the ball supported by our skipper Lawry Bradley Brown, and Classy half forward Michael Minuzzo. It was great to see everyone at the Aussie Saturday Night and look forward to ge ng our first home game against Millicent. Fridge
Great day for footy and equally great to be back across the border as a club signalling normal footy for us all including the CSFNC. Dylan and his team have done a mighty job in ge ng the Cats up and about for season 2021 and we need to back that in for the WBFL to be strong going forward. Bit later start to the day for the under 12s and 14s which agreed with most players with some solid wins recorded. We have some real future prospects star ng here and I encourage anyone to get along to see them in ac on. Big thanks to our Jnr coaches and umpires each week. Be er Players and awards, 12D, Pacey Duldig, Colby Watson, Jed Sunderland, Frankie Robbins. Awards to Arlie Sims and Judd Hales 12 B, Cruz Gibson (2 goals), Ari Robbins, Oakley Nicholls (2 goals), Levi Robbins, Tait Grge c (1 goal) and Sonny Cresp. Brax Thomas and Colby with a goal each also. Awards to Ari Robbins and Sonny Cresp. Under 14s, Best Players, Cash Kenny, Dylan Sigston, Je Werchon, Kobe Gibson, Lenny Tunkin, Sam Matherson Gronn, Harrison Thwaites. Awards to Liam Cawood and William Bohlin The under 16 team being led by skipper Toddy BOG with 5 goals played great team footy to record a win against the Cats who are s ll working hard to develop and we s ll have players to come back over the next few weeks. Best Players, Toddy (5), J Hagge , Wezza (1), J Bowden (1), Blake (3), Max Rorlach (1). Je and Kobe from 14s among the goals also. Congrats also to Kalan Shanks and Eli Redman who will be playing in an SANFL U16 GF on ANZAC day. No under 18 for the Cats this year meant ripping straight into the reserves with us recording a solid win. Best player and Congrats to great clubman Ferg on his 100th Game. 99 games of prac ce saw him tear up his wing on the day, supported by great mate Schultzy off the backline. Jack H and Digga
Millicent Red, Black & White worked together well up forward to finish off the work up the ground. Our senior return to form was great with passages of play which would have Clint pleased to see. Frazer Bradley (BOG) was unstoppable off half back. A lowering of the eyes helped us going our fwd 50 and saw Gene slot 9 for the day! young gun Josh Werchon moves the ball well and has a very big future. Cream con nued his run of form from week one with Cargs and Clint doing some of their best work to win the footy in ght. The day was unfortunately sca ered with incidents which we as both clubs and a league need to ensure aren’t repeated as they take away from what we want to develop as a clean, fast brand of footy at all levels and we need to con nually get be er! Enough on that. Please keep your eye on the ball for round 4 a er this week as we play a twilight game against North with some scheduling changes to give some junior players more crowd to play in front of and we hope to see supporters from both clubs hang around for a nshed super snag and great food, and embrace new ideas to enhance footy in the region!! The club is not a bank and taking money out at the club is not real Mmm let me have a look, we are cool. home for the next 3 weeks . That works save on cleaning and Cheers changing the chip oil. Millicent you might want to bring things for the Go Dogs showers. Round 2 and we are back at home.
Today we take on the pride of Victoria the mighty cats. A big thank you to their commi ee as they were happy to play the game at 4 pm as we do love a night game at East Gambier. Results went out way last week against the Tigers with the A and B grades both having good wins. Under 18s 16s and 14s all went down but plenty of promise in all 3 grades. A big thank you to all the players and volunteers that make up our club. I hope to see you all this Saturday night at the club. Dinners are open from 6 pm in the club and the fires and the bar won’t be shu ng any me soon. Add on there. Get your phones ready at the gate. Yes you have to all scan in. Plus the covid sign sheet is inside the club. Thank you all for been so friendly at the gate. P.S please bring you own cash to the club or just pay wave all day.
Lest we forget.

Island Park was buzzing last week, it was great to be back at the Ca ery, the supporters in the Grand-Stand going Ooooo, the blokes at the BBQ going Ahhhhh and the fans in the Cars going Toot toot, it was great.
The Under 16s were a li le off line but kept plugging away against the mini Saints, Sam Craig kicked our goal and was named in the best along with Angus Sweeney, Nicholas Lambert, Rufaro Makore, Josh McPeake and Josh Jones. The Ressies had to bring in some reinforcements due to injuries from the previous game, Leigh Killey had the Saints lads looking over their shoulders, Darren Murrell had them looking in the air and Ma Cranage had them looking at his heels as he le them in his wake. Unfortunatley even with these three in the side the Cats couldn't quite make it over the line. The Seniors tried hard all day and again finished be er than their opponent but the Saints had go en off to a be er start that the Cats couldn't catch. Adam McKinnon was our top scorer with 3 goals and Adrian Jarrad was B.O.G. Get well soon Tom Foster. The entertainment at the clubrooms, Michelles Velocity, was well received by those who a ended as its been a while between dances, a few sore heads the next day, must have been from the head banging!
Blue, White & Red This week we are at East Gambier, the Doggies are on a roll at the moment with 2 wins from 2 games, but our Cats j u st n e e d to ke e p p l ay i n g t h e percentages and this day will be theirs. We have some very exci ng players at the Cats so get behind them and cheer CARN CATS! A er the game get back to the Glenelg Inn for a feed and a catch up on the days play. Thank-you to all our valued sponsors including Nutrien Ag Solu ons, Taylor Motors, Glenelg Inn, Bendigo Bank, Aston Newman Timbers, Casterton Secondary College and Foodworks. Bre Murrell

South Gambier Red & White Firstly congratula ons to our women’s football team, coached by Damian Delaney and Michael Frost, who once again took home the Limestone Coast Women’s Football League flag. This supermo vated group of ladies has been the pace-se er in local women’s footy since the incep on of the league and Sunday’s hard fought win against Kybybolite was due recogni on of their dominance. Best of ground in a mighty team effort was the league’s star Tess Andrews closely followed by Kaylene Nuske and Kendall Saffin. Fantas c work ladies, very well deserved (and some hilarious costumes on Mad Monday). We hosted our friends from West Gambier on Saturday with great weather for most grades. It was a l s o o u r fi rst p a st D e m o n s gathering for the year and we had a great turn up with the day sponsored by Cam and Trent Milich (thanks guys). A er a beer and a party pie we had a look around the new club extension hopefully everyone went away happy with what they saw for the future of our club. It’s been a lot of work by a lot of people and we are very pleased with the result. If anyone missed and would like a tour please ask and we’ll be more than happy to oblige.

football and have been well drilled for a long me. Again there are a number of lads almost ready to take the big step to senior footy which is great for our club’s future. Shem Wastell, Noah Sims and Blake Neshoda played best. We acknowledge that West were down on numbers and wish big Steve Wenman all the best in his recovery from serious injury. It has been great to see our reserves team finally come of age and play the footy we’ve been wai ng for. The club has been working towards being stronger in both senior grades and this year is seeing some of that work come to frui on. The old man of the team Brent Howard won the footy at will, son of Croc Koby “Gator” Chant was terrific coming back from long injury break, Ethan Chuck is knocking on the senior footy door with Nick Steeny and Charlie Fisher important contributors. Also great to have Henri Capewell back at the club kicking goals and giving them off. The seniors was a funny game with South domina ng the first half to hold West goal-less then having 5 goals kicked against us in the 3rd term. Full credit to the undermanned Roos - it goes to show what happens when you take your eye off the ball. Without Bre O’Neil, Jack Casey and Brodie Foster we may not have gained what was in the end a 4-goal win. We’ll need to be on our me le come Anzac Day against one of our great rivals, North Gambier.
On the field for the second c o n s e c u ve w e e k w e w e re successful in all grades. The U14 Whites did it nicely with Jace Maxwell, Harrison Hicks and Cur s Page playing well. The U16 Whites played some a rac ve footy, quite Best of luck to all teams and a few of these boys will be pushing players today. for senior selec on in the next year or 2. Welcome to Anzac Day, when we remember all who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping opera ons and the contribu on and suffering of all those who have served.
North and South are privileged to play sport on this day and we have made this game one of the most important in the local football and netball calender. May the tradi on con nue and games be played in the Anzac spirit. Thank you to South Gambier for their hos ng and organisa on for 2021. Last week we met East Gambier at Vansi art Park. The day began brightly enough for the Tigers, taking wins in all of the underage grounds. Many juniors are playing up in grades, including u12s into the u14s. Last week we also had 4 girls in our u14s who showed the boys how to lay a tackle.
Yellow & Black Game mes will be as follows; U14s - 11.30am U18s - 12.50pm Res - 2.20pm U16s - 4.10pm Seniors - 5.30pm Back Oval 12Es - 12:00pm 12Cs - 1:00pm 12As - 2:00pm Netball star ng one hour later than normal game mes. Go Tigers
Unfortunately we fell short in the seniors and reserves, but not for the lack of trying. It was good to see Aus n Kitschke back in the yellow and black and Luke Powell give our midfielders first use of the ball. No surprise with the other best players being Nick, Dylan, Hamish and Jake. Next week we head to Millicent, with whom we have agreed to mix things up a bit with a change of order (to allow the reserves to enjoy the seniors) and the senior game to start at 5.30pm, resul ng in a later start (sleep in) for all. Fingers crossed for some decent weather, no ng Millicent have promised to have the shed warm, drinks cold and plenty of food op ons, so lets make sure that by the me the seniors start that we are at least 50% represented at the ground and par cularly the shed.

Thanks to passionate spor ng parents, Duldig said he was des ned to s p e n d Saturdays on the footy field which helped the regular moves. “With my father a footballer and my mother a netballer, the love of sport was ins lled in myself and brother from a young age,” he said. “I had my first taste of junior football when I was five on the Eyre Peninsula filling in. “It was hard moving from Tumby Bay to Millicent because I had a lot good mates there, but being welcomed with open arms by the Millicent spor ng clubs made it easy.” A er touching base with fellow Tumby Bay
A er kicking a goal on debut Duldig did enough to become a star ng member of the Saints’ 1996 A Grade squad before heading up to Adelaide for university. The youngster had already made regular trips up the Dukes Highway to represent Port Adelaide in the junior grades and had high hopes for his fouryear study s nt, but said injury changed his plans. “When I moved I started training with the senior squad, played Under 19’s in 1997 and would have loved to play SANFL for the Magpies,” he said.
rewarding challenges including represen ng the state in the 2010 Australian Country Championships. “It is no secret I love interleague and representa ve footy and found it beneficial to my development,” Duldig said. “In 2010 we played at Manuka Oval which was fantas c and had a really good team, but lost to a powerhouse Vic Country team coached by Hawthorn legend Peter Knight.” Later that year Duldig found himself pushing for a maiden WBFL flag, but fell just two points short to the Roos in a classic which made 2018 even more special. “On that day we fell about 40 points behind at half me, but we didn’t lose faith and pegged it back to two points and just ran out of me,” he said. “At that stage I was in my early 30’s and thought it could have been my last chance to get a premiership, so I was pre y gu ed.” However, Duldig con nued to cross the boundary line each week and con nues to play for his beloved Saints in the B Grade.
“But unfortunately I broke my leg at the start of the season and didn’t play for the rest of the year and my mo va on dropped off a li le bit. “I didn’t play un l halfway through 1998 for Seaton Ramblers in the amateur league where I fell in love with the game again with one of my idols growing up Sco Hodges.”
He admi ed to thinking about hanging up the boots last year, but the love of the game remains too strong. “Last year I had planned to go back and start playing B Grade, but obviously there was no footy, so I did ques on whether I would con nue,” he said. “But once footy season got close the passion reignited and I have really enjoyed the last two weeks, which reaffirmed my decision to keep playing un l the body says otherwise.”
When a job opportunity sprung up in Millicent, Duldig moved back home in an instant and slipped into the Saints like he never le .
Duldig is a passionate Port Adelaide fan and cherishes the Power’s big day against Brisbane in 2004.
He remained a goalkicker, but said a gut call by coach Billy Nitschke moved him to the now familiar role in the backline. “Billy ended up throwing me back one day and I must have done something right because I never played up forward since,” Duldig said. “Ini ally I was a li le bit reluctant because I did enjoy playing forward, but I grew into the role and fell in love with it pre y quickly.”
He would have loved to smell some teen spirit watching Nirvana’s tour of Australia in the 90’s and is also a keen golfer and wished he could witness Adam Sco become the first and only Australian to win the Masters eight years ago.
Over the years Duldig became a regular member in WBFL Interleague teams and now coaches the squad. He said representa ve footy was one of his most

MATCH REPORTS SOUTH GAMBIER V WEST GAMBIER It was a much more promising performance from South Gambier but West Gambier s ll found a way with its experienced campaigners Lisa McGregor and Amy Cram leading their young team mates through the challenge to secure a 10 goal victory. West led by one at quarter me and six at the half with the new look Demons matching it with the Roos. Brandi Bouchier and Renee Pluckhahn ensured there was no me, space or easy ball for McGregor and her young shoo ng partner Sarah Ri er, while at the other end of the court, Imogen Walker provided incredible drive and accurate feeding at wing a ack as the height of Grace Edwards and the slick moves and accurate finishing of youngster Lara Munro made sure the me in possession was rewarded on the scoreboard. Zoe Malseed made her A Grade debut at centre for West, scrapping hard at the defensive end of the court and driving hard onto the circle. The defensive duo of Cram and Jade Ri er were key in the opening half for West, with Cram ge ng some important touches but arguably more importantly organising the defensive goal third to try and shut down the free flowing Demons, while Jade Ri er rejected shots and hunted high in the goal third to take some cri cal intercep ons. The Roos shuffled the line up at the main break, bringing experienced recruit Hannah Fisher into the wing defence role and moving Mikaela Horrigan into centre, with South also making changes with Edwards moving to goal keeper, just as she did the previous week, with Hannah Witherow moving from centre to a acking, with Olivia Patzel debu ng in the centre for her new club.
won the final quarter, reducing the deficit to eight goals before having to se le for a 10 goal loss. West would be pleased with the premiership points and the ability to respond to what was somewhat of an unexpected challenge, while South matched it with a perennial finalist and also scored 52 goals – a tally rarely reached in recent seasons. NORTH GAMBIER V EAST GAMBIER East Gambier has con nued on its merry way with another comprehensive performance, set up again by an explosive start, leading 16-4 at quarter me for the second me in consecu ve weeks and then not allowing the opposi on a way back into the contest. It was a case of lack of supply for North Gambier in the damaging opening quarter with East crea ng 24 scoring shots to the Tigers’ six.
c o m b i n a o n fo r t h e Bulldogs is super dangerous. Gray, as the two me reigning associa on best and fairest has a resume everyone is familiar with and now she has a shoo ng partner who is producing the same volume of goals in rising talent Amryn Bosko. The youngster ne ed 33 of East’s 67 goals and only had a handful of misses and her trademark composure con nues to impress.
Losing the experience and versa lity of Noni McConnell in the warm up when the key Tiger injured her calf turned out to be an omen for North in a day that went from bad to worse.
CASTERTON SANDFORD V MILLICENT Casterton Sandford’s goaling combina on started their tough clash with reigning premiers Millicent having to work hard for any possession but coach Tori Broomby and Paige Murrell made the most of every opportunity – shoo ng seven from seven. The problem was at the other end, the speed of ball from Demi Verbena, Lucy Denton and Paige Nitschke into the height of Tabatha Sanderson was impressive and accurate and Sanderson rewarded her team mates conver ng 22 from 22 in a stunning opening quarter.
North did somewhat rec fy its supply issue in the second with a more even performance but with young shooter Amryn Bosko ne ng eight from nine and Tenille Gray conver ng nine from 11, East only extended their advantage which was 19 by the main break.
The Cats swung the changes at the first break and the move of Meg Fennell into the centre to give the team a smart head and strong driving certainly made a difference and when she spent the second half at wing a ack, her feeding into the circle was precise.
If North was going to conjure a comeback to put some respectability into the scoreboard, the third quarter put paid to that as this relentless Bulldogs ou it con nued to pile on the pain.
It was always going to be a tough ou ng for the inexperience Cats, but they grew across the game, and the third quarter, where Murrell and Broomby again combined for a strong shoo ng performance, ne ng 13 from 14.
It was all about weight of possession again with the Bulldogs conver ng 19 from 21m while North converted accurately with only one miss for the quarter, unfortunately it was from only seven opportuni es.
The goal circle also saw a shi with Walker moving back to shooter to team with Munro and in a special moment, Ellie Bouchier made her A Grade debut taking the wing defence bib and in the final quarter when her mother Brandi re-entered the contest it was a first me for the mother-daughter to play side by side.
The final quarter was the Tigers’ best with Jessie Li le moving to the defensive wing and new recruit Maddie Stegmyer taking the goal keeper bib and in the end they lost the quarter by only two goals.
At the defensive end things improved in the second half as well, with Caeleigh Humphries con nuing to develop as she tests herself against the best goal a acks in the business, with Sharna Fidler entering the clash and providing her usual high standard of ght checking and ensuring her opponent had no easy ball. But the bo om line is, Sanderson does not get shorter as the match con nues and as she did in round one, she shot 65 of the Saints’ 87 goals.
While none of West’s moves seemed to significantly impact the match, the Roos dominated the third quarter. McGregor got off the leash a er Pluckhahn had made life tough for her in the first half and while Edwards s ll took some strong intercep ons and rebounds, Sarah Ri er did seem to start to find her mojo.
Tarsh McCallum was outstanding for East, doing just the kind of damage everyone expected with her return in season 2021 to the a acking wing. Her pace, ability to work in small spaces and reliability with ball in hand was on full display as she con nually connected with Amryn Bosko and Gray.
Millicent took the opportunity to blood emerging defender Por a McRae who made her presence felt in goal keeper in the first half, while Sophie Ellis backed up from her A Reserve ou ng in goals to play wing defence and then goal keeper to be part of the makeshi defensive line that was missing Kimmi Tincknell.
Horrigan’s athle cism through the middle of the court started to have an impact, while Jade Ri er and Cram were able to create more turnover ball than they had in the en re first half and more rebounding opportuni es resulted.
The ba le in the middle of the court was as outstanding as pre-game predic ons suggested with Mel Renko and Emily Hunter going head to head. Both worked hard and Renko was an important leader on court for the Tigers, especially when East was crea ng almost one way traffic.
Hannah Nitschke might only be two round into a season where she looks to be permanently playing circle defence but she has shown she has learnt her cra well from Hayley Dunn and is up to the challenge with two outstanding performances.
By the final change, West had established a 14 goal buffer and the result looked set.
Young gun Ellen Brown also ran hard all day and tried to use her pace and smarts to give her team mates a strong outlet. Her delivery to returning goal shooter Caroline Davey was also precise when the opportunity arose.
The games the Cats are ge ng into Charlo e Rice, Madison Mutch and Claire Foster will be hard going ini ally but that young talent will con nue to develop and start to feel at home in top company.
Coach Belinda Scanlon took the wing a ack bib for South, injec ng fresh legs into the contest and Brandi Bouchier returned to the court to goal defence and the added experienced seemed to refocus the young Demons who

DENTON’S
ROUND 3 PREVIEWS SOUTH GAMBIER V NORTH GAMBIER ANZAC Day is a special day for the players of the two compe ng clubs but has also, in recent years, become a predictable day with the Tigers domina ng the past few encounters. They will again start warm favourites but South Gambier showed last weekend that it might be a new look, inexperienced line-up, but it has some tricks up its sleeve and this ANZAC Day clash looms as one of the more compe ve in recent history. If Imogen Walker is s ll available she looms large as a key for the home side, while Lara Munro con nues to impress, Brandi Bouchier is never beaten, Renee Pluckhahn has brought some tenacity and class to the line-up and Grace Edwards gives the Demons the height and versa lity it has been missing in previous years. For North, Noni McConnell is under an injury cloud a er a pre-game warm up mishap with her calf, but there is so much depth at North – from Caroline Davey in the shoo ng circle, to defensive star Maddie Whaites to classy midcourter Mel Renko. Both sides boast versa lity and are clearly s ll ex p e r i m e n n g w i t h co m b i n a o n s . T h e experience advantage is with North but South, while coming off a loss, gained significant confidence from challenging West Gambier and also pos ng more than 50 goals. It will come down to the start. If the Demons can stay with the Tigers for long enough, it will become a genuine fight but if, like in previous years, North gets off to a flier and dominates the scoreboard, it will be a long road back. South coach Belinda Scanlon has a number of combina ons at her disposal and pulling the right lever early will be key – the mix of experience and youth seems to be working despite the winless start to the season and reversing the recent ANZAC Day trend would be just reward. That being said, you add Jessie Li le, Amanda O’Shaughnessy, Alycia Close, Ellen Brown and a host of other quality North players from the A and A Reserve squad that are s ll working across both grades and the Tigers should get the points but West can tes fy that it won’t be easy and you cannot afford not to be at the top of your game to topple the Demons in 2021.
EAST GAMBIER V CASTERTON SANDFORD The Cats have had a tough start to the season. An inexperienced line-up and some player unavailability in the early rounds has not made for easy going and it arguably gets tougher this weekend when they take on the undefeated Bulldogs who are looming as the compe on benchmark in 2021. Playing coach Tori Broomby, who has been a cri cal on court leader for some years, will be aware of the challenge and set her team its own goals as it looks to limit the scoreboard damage against the star studded East line-up. It will be an incredible learning curve for the likes of Charlo e Rice, Madison Mutch, Claire Foster and Caeleigh Humphries and while it will be a tough day at the office, playing against quality opposi on will teach them so much about life in the top grade. The leadership of Broomby, Paige Murrell and Meg Fennell will be cri cal to keeping the youngster in the contest. East has run with the same seven in the opening two rounds and there are no weaknesses. Amryn Bosko is coming off a best on court performance, sister Tyne is in outstanding form on the defensive and Tarsh McCallum is ripping it to shreds at wing a ack. The defensive combina on of Bo Creek and Lisa Fyfe are the queens of crea ng turnovers and Emily Hunter is as tough as they come through the middle of the court, while Tenille Gray has a resume unparalleled amongst current A Grade players. East will win but the Cats will learn and while it will be a tough lesson, it will pay dividends as the season wears on.
WEST GAMBIER V MILLICENT Millicent had a solid start in tough condi ons a ga i n st S o u t h i n ro u n d o n e a n d t h e n , undermanned, were too strong for Casterton Sandford.
the Roos from an upset loss to the Demons but the good news was, when challenged, they rose to the challenge, despite not playing their best netball, and s ll secured the win. Lisa McGregor put in her usual work rate and leadership, while Sarah Ri er grew across the contest and their combina on and their connec on with Carlee Ransom will be cri cal against a new look Saints defence line. Hannah Nitschke has been in stellar form and Kimmi Tincknell should be back in the line-up. Both are tenacious close checking defenders who are also happy to hunt the intercep on. Ri er’s height and McGregor’s precise delivery will test the Saints defensive line that in the past has enjoyed the height of Hayley Dunn and Madi Hagge but fortunately for the Saints they have already tackled tall mber in round one and got the job done. At the other end, Amy Cram leads the defensive line, and she knows their challenge will be slowing down the speed of ball so typical of the Saints frontline. Lucy Denton, Paige Nitschke and Demi Verbena have shown they have great connec on and the height of Tabatha Sanderson, who opened round two with 22 straight, will cause headaches for young defender Jade Ri er. The young defender had to do a similar job at the weekend on South’s Grace Edwards and she created some good turnovers and she has matched up on Sanderson before so that limits the element of surprise. Millicent will remain undefeated and s ll have some talented juniors including Por a McRae, Paige Lucas and Daisy Tunkin who can take an on court role and already have this season and Sophie Ellis adds further depth with her ability to take any on court role.
This weekend looms as their first challenge in 2021 and West Gambier will be all too aware it will need to improve on its round two performance against South. A strong third quarter and come cri cal turnover ball generated by Jade Ri er and Amy Cram saved

East Gambier Red & Black A Grade - East 67 d North 33 - Best Players Amryn Bosko & Tarsh McCallum Awards Winners - (Lima & Co) Amryn Bosko (Jens Hotel) Tyne Bosko (Salts of The Earth) Tarsh McCallum Last week we faced North at Vansi art Park in which was always going to be a tough game for us. Overall, we played a consistent team game and managed to come away with the win. Tyne Bosko worked incredibly well in defence all game and performed well when under pressure, accompanied by Bo Creek and Lisa Fyfe, who played a major part in our side taking the lead against North. Experienced and dynamic WA, Tarsh McCallum played an excep onal game on Saturday, working well with Emily Hunter around the goal circle. Amryn Bosko once again worked with the experienced Tenille Gray in the goal circle and played an outstanding game and was awarded first best for her efforts on the day. This week we take on Casterton at home. We are unfamiliar with their line up, however we con nue to prepare ourselves for an intense game each week. A Res - East 67 d North 33 - Best Players Michelle Richardson & Casey Horrigan Award Winners - (Hue Colour) Lauren Harvey (Athletes Foot) Michelle Richardson (Dwyer’s Boxing) Jasmine Rokov With the unknown of how strong North was going to be, we come out firing and ready to p l ay. N o r t h h a d a g r e a t s i d e w i t h unfortunately an injury in the first quarter disturbing their line-up. But that did not stop us from playing our game and ge ng a win. We had some amazing defensive work by all in and around the circle keeping north scoring to a minimum. With the amazing return of Lauren Harvey and Chloe Perryman keeping the middle sane and structured we were able to get it down the a ack line and score. Both Alysia and Casey had to work hard to get in the circle and were able to finish strong. Taking each quarter as a new quarter and playing a terrible 3rd quarter we need had to fire up and play our hearts out! It was an amazing effort by the whole team and what a great win it was! B Grade - East 33 lost to North 36 - Best Players - Zoee Cornolo & Gemma Hunt Award Winners - (Gym Challenge Meals) Gemma Hunt (Nourish Nook) Zoee Cornolo (Beau e Studio) Amy Feast With wet condi ons the girls played with cau on, short and sharp play throughout the whole court, showing pa ence and Nicola Smith and Gemma Hunt shoo ng well. North were always on the tail of us, providing a strong presence, we unfortunately had Becky Grosser call injury in the first quarter, followed by Hayley Hosking going down with a knee injury in the third. We brought young Lucy Davis who provided drive through the mid court and pressure over the ball. Megan Wilson was consisted with passing into the goalies and the use of voice. In defence Amy Feast and Erin Hudson were just outstanding, with lots of voice and commitment helped turn balls over, and bring the ball down. First Best went to our Captain Zoee Cornolo, who was constant with passing, driving and hi ng the circle edge. We went down by 3, but this is achievable. C Grade - East 34 defeated North 33 - Best Players - Kate Gaffney & Lucy Davis Award Winners - (Creek Livestock) Lucy Davis (Natural Born Grillers) Kate Gaffney (F45) Sophie Drew Shaky start for the girls with a strong fight back from 6-0. changes around the court allowed for a new drive down the centre and open direc on. In the last the girls had great confidence in driving the ball down the court. Minor errors allowed North to gain some turnovers in the wet. Girls brought home the win by 1. Best Players: K. Gaffney L. Davis 17s - East 40 lost to North 41 - Best Players Kate Dempsey & Brooklyn Jean Award Winners - (25 Acres) Brooklyn Jean (Boost Juice) Kate Dempsey (Bakers Delight) Amryn Bosko With a different intensity to last week, north played a li le hard and stronger to get the win. Small improvements in passes, leading op ons and space will make a big difference, all things that we can control, for when we face them against 15A’s - East 18 lost to North 63 - Best Players - Tonique Buford & Indi Dwyer Award Winners - (Kaboom FE) Tonique Burford (Scroll Queen) Indi Dwyer (Boost Juice) Keelie Neilson This wasn't one of our be er games and was disappoin ng to see dropped heads. Playing against a good side - we should use this to mo vate and want to play at our best not give up instead. Our leads we behind and our passes were too so and loopy, making it easy to intercept. We allowed North to take the ball far too easily. Lets regroup this week and play with the desire and determina on that i know you all have and are capable of. 15B’s - East 6 lost to North 55 - Best Players Millie Bu on & Bridget Facey Award Winners - (OK Pie Shop) Tonique Burford (Red Rooster) Millie Bu on (Scroll Queen) Bridget Facey Again a team effort gave us the win on the board. Remember to use the systems that we prac se at training in our games as these are only being used a few mes. once we have these happening you will see the difference in your game. Good shoo ng and leading my Millie in the goal circle and again our defensive end kept us in the game. Keep the good work up girls. 13A’s - East 42 d North 21 - Best Players Ka e Kerr & Sharni Clark Award Winners - (Fasta Pasta) Ka e Kerr (Natural Born Grillers) Sharni Clarke (Copenhagen) Skye Wilson Saturday was a tough game for the 13A as north are a tough side to play against. The girls really focused on things we had been prac cing a training. It was a good game to try different combina ons and the girls definitely adapted to the changes. The score doesn’t reflect on how well the girls played. 13B’s - East 7 lost to North 44 - Best Players Tahni Kemp & Ma lda Clark Award Winners - (Athletes Foot) Jolie O’Dea (Red Rooster) Ruby Driscoll (Bakers Delight) Isna Me The girls had a tough game against North. Casterton-Sandford
A collec ve sigh could be heard echo around the netball courts at Island Park last Saturday when the first whistle of the day sounded. The cobwebs and dust around the courts had been blown away thanks to an enthusias c band of volunteers (including some future netball stars Jasmine, Abbey, Madi and Daphne) and the facili es were shining and ready to host our first home game since 2019. The Commi ee have worked relessly in the lead up to this game to ensure the grounds and buildings were as Covid safe as possible and would like to thank all players and spectators for following the guidelines in place. Netball is back at home!
And for the record Bre , you can’t go past one of our chicken schnitzel and gravy rolls - they are even be er than our super snags! Just saying. Having some solid training sessions under their belts during the week, the Cats were prepared for the daun ng task of taking on League powerhouse Millicent, who had wins in all grades the previous week. Days like these provide opportuni es for future growth, and focusing on small successes in games need to be the focus. With some senior teams s ll not set, the inclusion of some major names like Rhook and Fennell filled some gaps p e r fe c t l y. A l l t e a m s a p p l i e d themselves to the task at hand, everyone worked hard in their posi ons and followed coach’s instruc ons, with some flashes of brilliance and clever play across all grades pleasing coaches and spectators alike. Fortune favours the brave and a highlight of the day was a hardfought draw in A Reserve, coming back from a five-goal deficit going into the last quarter. A brilliant effort from this team and a great example of believing in yourself and each other, and giving 110% un l the final whistle. The 15 & Under B grade team backed up their win from round one with a solid 4 quarters to be victorious against the Saints girls, a great result from a great team effort. Well done. Cat of the Day Glenelg Inn voucher was awarded to the unwavering Sharna Fidler who gave her all in defence in the thrilling A Reserve draw, a well-earned night off cooking and dishes! Good luck to the teams today as we face a polished East Gambier ou it. Go Cats! Hope they have a schni y roll to compare…..

Speaking of senior success the B and C Grade hit the winner's list in style - both securing dominant wins.
Jess, out of her comfort zone in g o a l s h o o t e r, n a i l e d s o m e stunning shots and worked well with Brooke to form a formidable shoo ng combina on while the smiling assassin Ella was dominant at wing a ack.
The A Grade performance, while a loss, was outstanding. It has been quite some me since the team has topped the 50 goal mark and also since they have challenged a contender for the vast majority of the game, were it not for a lapse in the third quarter, it could well have gone down to the wire.
Bella Morale was best on court and looks set to make the goal defence bib her own with some impressive intercep ons and strong rebounding, while Misty was also a standout. especially in the opening quarter and when she combined with Bella to not allow West any easy scoring Imi con nues to be a star and Lara opportuni es. backed up her round one debut with an impressive four quarter The B Grade also rebounded from performance against one of the its round one loss with a four premier defenders in the league quarter performance headlined by for the past decade. North Gambier
A Grade - North 33 East 67 With a depleted side this week we took on East Gambier who we knew have recruited well over the off season and would be the team to beat in 2021. The girls had some nice passages of play and at mes put pressure on a quick moving East. Ellen Brown was a standout and stood her ground under intense pressure of East. Mel Renko worked relessly to defend and a ack the ball and added senior guidance down both ends. With 3 girls away and Noni McConnell sustaining an injury prior to the game commencing, the side will take away some valuable lessons.

100 GAME MILESTONES It has been a harder road than for most to make the centenary of games, with Reid having a back condi on that saw her out of the game for around 18 months but the goaler, who can also do damage in the mid court, has returned in 2021 with a vengeance, also taking the court in the club’s A Reserve team. Megan debuted as an 11 & Under player and in her second season at the club was part of the allconquering 13 & Under B team that went through the season undefeated to take the 2016 premiership. She has since played in two further season deciders and has also accrued some individual accolades at club level along the way.
STEVI CLAYTON
In 2019, before she was sidelined by her injury, she made an impressive debut in the club’s A Grade side with a solid performance at wing a ack against East Gambier.
Stevi started with West Gambier back in 2015 and has always been a very enthusias c par cipant. She’s been suppor ve of her peers and has always given 100% effort. Even when injured Stevi’s love for the game has been rewarded with two coaches awards and numerous of best game awards. We are all very proud of Stevi’s achievement of reaching her 100 game milestone with the Roos xx
