Ihave just spent a glorious adrenalinefuelled few days at York Racecourse’s Dante Festival, and there’s truly nothing more euphoric than sipping a glass of fizz while cheering on your horse as it gallops past the finishing line. Sadly, I didn’t have much luck with the gee-gees, but the atmosphere at the course was electric and even a bundle of screwed up betting slips couldn’t dent my enthusiasm.
If you’re a racing fanatic or just enjoy a day out socialising in the sun, there’s no better county in the UK for racing. Each year, Yorkshire stages an incredible 180 days of the sport of kings across nine racecourses ranging from Pontefract –boasting the longest race in the calendar – to Doncaster, which hosts historic St Leger, and the stunning York course with its world-famous Ebor Festival in August.
One of my favourite racing moments was back in the Diamond Jubilee year 2012, when my husband and I were invited to the Royal Stand next to The Royal Box for the Epsom Derby. We were surrounded by landed gentry tucking into complimentary Champagne and delicious food – and when we strolled out onto the balcony we could see Her Majesty, our late Queen, studying the form.
I was sat next to racehorse owner and TV presenter Jeremy Kyle who surprised me by being a total gentleman – far removed from his brash TV persona –and thankfully refrained from asking any of the royals to do a DNA test! Racing can also be a great form of therapy. The day after I was diagnosed with grade three cancer in March 2013, I jumped into a friend’s car down to The Cheltenham Festival for the Gold Cup. The combination of world-class jump racing, a few glasses of Guinness and the raucous craic lifted my spirits – though I may have been in diagnosis denial!
This August, I’m thrilled to be on the judging panel at Ebor Fashion Lawn in York where women, men and children will parade in their finery on the green catwalk. It’s going to be a tough job, but I will channel my inner Anna Wintour – hopefully without the scowl and sunglasses.

Gino D’Acampo on returning to the Yorkshire Dales Food & Drink Festival from 21-23 July
Q How does it feel being part of the biggest food and drink festival in the UK?
A I can’t wait... I haven’t performed at a food festival in a long time, and I am really looking forward to doing it again. There is something about cooking live in front of all those people that makes me really excited.
Q If you had to choose, what would be your favourite Yorkshire dish and why?
A It would have to be sausage in the hole. Or is it toad in the hole? I can’t remember... Why? Because it sounds great!
Q You came to the festival in 2018, what has brought you back to the festival this year?
A I loved how family orientated the festival was. Family and food go hand in hand so I think it is the perfect combination of what a food and drink festival should be. I can remember there being lots of variety too, with the food, people and activities.
Q How does it feel cooking in a big top in the middle of a field in front of over 1,000 people?
9 JULY, WAKEFIELD
It’s time to satisfy your sweet tooth as the Pontefract Liquorice Festival returns on Sunday 9 July 2023 - and what a bumper crop it is this year. Enjoy non-stop street entertainment and live music whilst exploring the renowned food and drink market. Expect tasty treats to tempt the taste buds and quirky gifts that you just won’t find anywhere else. experiencewakefield.co.uk
A It feels great! I always like my cooking demonstrations to be as entertaining and engaging as possible, and I like to involve the crowd as much as possible. They are not just there to see me cook; they are there to have fun too. Now, cooking in a field is di erent - but I like the challenge.

“My teacher skits are so relatable to viewers”
If you told Monica Geldart back in 2020 that her future full-time job would be a content creator, and she’d find love on Instagram, she would have laughed at you.
Just before the global pandemic took hold, she was an arts technician in Harrogate, with dreams of becoming an actor. “I joined TikTok in May 2020 when school was shut, and we were in lockdown. I used to see the kids at school on it all the time, doing dances, but I didn’t think it was for me,” she grins.
“I did wonder what it was all about, so I downloaded it. I had plenty of time on my hands – it started a whole new world of creativity. I loved it and thought it was brilliant! Lip syncs were ‘in’ at the time, so I started uploading my own – I was having so much fun, and I began watching people performing their own comedy skits, particularly the teacher spoof.
“I’m a huge fan of Catherine Tate and Victoria Wood – so I thought I’d create my own sketches. My personal experiences as a student and art technician began to shape my content creation,” explains the upbeat 25-year-old.
Propping her phone up and hitting record to create snappy observational comedy clips on the video-sharing app has transformed Monica’s life – earning her a jaw-dropping 60 million likes on TikTok, 100,000 followers on Instagram, and a slew of brand partnerships. She beams at her achievements, still in utter disbelief. “This is now my full-time job, and it feels weird saying it. My teacher skits have received the biggest viral hits because the content is so relatable to viewers.”
Monica performs other school-related characters in her clips including a receptionist, student and the stereotypical mum to Maisie, a character inspired by her own mother. “I do ‘the mum’ skit a lot
these days,” she says. “It’s the day-to-day interactions that influence me. From seeing the way someone walks, or hearing the way they talk – it gives me the best ideas.”
She eld-born Monica moved to Harrogate aged two, later attending Rossett School. Drama played a central role in her early life, she explains. “I was in all the plays and drama clubs,” she recalls. “I struggled academically, and drama was the only subject I really wanted to do. I didn’t get into university after sixth form and aged 18 I had no money and didn’t know what was next for me. I stayed at my high school as an arts technician – it was a chance to work for a year and earn money.
“While working I started getting drama auditions in London. I was looking at schools like Lamda and RADA, but when I read some of the materials I freaked out! I didn’t think I could do it.”
Monica stayed in the arts technician role for four years, while also embarking
on an Acting for Screen diploma at the Yorkshire Academy of Film and Television in Leeds. “I really wanted to perform and when lockdown hit, I thought ‘why not do something about it?’. TikTok gave me that platform. Comedy is something I love, and it’s grown.”
Reflecting on her newfound TikTok fame, Monica remains sanguine. “It was bizarre at first – people get personally connected to you and follow your journey. While I have the loveliest audience, I sometimes feel disconnected – it’s all character based and not actually me,” she admits.
“After doing this for three years I’ve come to accept that people won’t like you or what you do. If they don’t know you
personally, you can’t take it personally! Comedy is subjective, some people find it funny, some don’t. I delete the horrible comments. The one comment I roll my eyes at is when people say women aren’t funny. You can’t insult all women. It’s ridiculous and misogynistic!”
While the social media star’s career has flourished, so has her love life. Monica recently moved to be with fiancée and actor Connor Calland, best known for playing Jordan Price on TV soap Hollyoaks. Her face lights up as she recalls their first ‘meeting’.
“I met Connor on Instagram. He saw my videos through one of his friends, a writer and actor, who shared my clips on her Instagram stories. He thought I was funny, so he messaged me, and we got chatting about the acting world. He asked me out for a drink, and I said: ‘if you’re willing to come to Leeds’. So, he did.”
The couple confirmed their engagement earlier this year in what Monica describes as the “biggest shock of her life”. “I had no idea what Connor was planning! He wanted to propose one Wednesday during a walk with our dog Nellie on the beach. He took me to
the dunes, but it was so windy and I was complaining, saying ‘the wind is in my eyes, and I need to get home to work’. I was being a nightmare,” she laughs. “Connor finally got down on one knee when we returned home.”
Two years on from their first date on Greek Street in Leeds, the loved-up couple are already planning their 2025 wedding. “It’s been a whirlwind,” admits Monica. “Our plan is to stay in Southport near Connor’s family, but who knows if we’ll head back to Yorkshire. I loved growing up in Harrogate and I always return to see my friends, and my mum. I also visit my dad in York. Connor and I love walking in Hookstone Woods and whenever we drive past The Stray, I remember the good times. I’m nostalgic, especially driving past school where it all began.”
Monica also discovered good friend and comedy collaborator Chris Hall, a fellow TikTok star and actor. Together they have written a short YouTube sketch show called Jobsworth
“I met Chris on TikTok after watching his hilarious millennial skits,” Monica explains. “Jobsworth is our improvised project, which we’d like to expand and create a sketch show with di erent characters and get some unreal talent involved.”
Despite her remarkable rise, Monica is humble about the future. “You know it’s good to have ambition and motivation, but sometimes I look back and remember how far I’ve come.”
Follow Monica online @monica_geldartQ When did you first develop an interest in tattoos?
A In all honesty I never wanted any growing up. But I got my first one when I was 17 over in Spain on a holiday after some persuasion, and safe to say it’s one I definitely regret! But since getting that one, I wanted another I could love so I designed my next one and it grew from there. I would share them on Instagram, and people would ask me to do one for them. So when it started I just saw it as a hobby. I was about 20 at the time and my dad suggested I start charging, so that’s what I did. I never studied business so it was definitely a learning curve. I’m still learning now almost 12 years on. I don’t think I ever thought being a tattoo artist was achievable for me. But it was the next logical step. I struggle to concentrate and take in information, especially the first time and I am dyslexic, so when I first started learning, I nearly ran a mile!
Q How did this evolve into a business?
A I was designing tattoos at the time, and customers would ask when they could come and get them done, so I had to explain that I didn’t tattoo and they would have to find an artist happy to do another artist's work. It just made sense for me to start learning! I struggled to get a position as an artist because every parlour seemed to be full. So I decided to take it into my own hands and open my own space, anthologie.
Q How would you sum up the design and look of anthologie?
A It is designed to make our clients feel welcome and calm. A tattoo is a special and personal experience. I personally don’t like getting tattooed and the anxiety is always
worse in a heavily built up and bustling studio. I like my clients to feel like we are having a one on one and their experience is one of quality, and where that is reflected in the tattoo.
Q Why have you decided to expand into next door and what’s the plans for Sonder?
A Lots of reasons really! Mainly as it’s been a dream of mine for such a long time to merge my love of interiors with relaxation and good food, so I needed to make it happen. Most of my sessions tend to need some sort of break part way through, so it’s super convenient to have my new space just next door. The energy and feel of the space will also complement anthologie, I’m excited to see how they will look next to each other. It will also allow me to turn the waiting area in anthologie into spaces for other artists that like a more chilled out environment. The plans are to serve co ee and light plates, alongside retro and Japanese style homeware and interiors. All being well we can open a bar area in the evening further down the road. I’m excited for this one!
Q How does family life fit in with the businesses?
A In all honesty, it’s a struggle. My husband and I are both self employed and that life can
be a pressurising one. However, I’m hoping my daughter Alba will grow up to see that you can do whatever you want in life, if you put the time and work in that’s required to get there. And, you can also be there for your family as much as possible. I try to be present as much as possible in the moments I get with my daughter, but I’ve always got a million and one things racing around in my head! We’re lucky that we both have our parents close by and two nurseries a short drive away, so our little one is surrounded by loved ones and a great learning environment.
Q Are you Leeds born and bred?
A Yes! I’m a Leeds lass. I was born at Jimmy’s and grew up in Roundhay. I’ve lived in Liverpool and London, but returned back to my roots to bring up our family.
Q What do you love about being based in Leeds?
A Leeds is great and has so much to o er. Leeds folk are some of the friendliest there are in my opinion! There’s the perfect mix of countryside and city life. We also host a lot of creative businesses in Leeds, which is something that I love about the city.
Q Where are your favourite spots in the area?
A Roundhay Park as it’s on our doorstep, so nice and close, and Alba loves the swans! I feel like a walk in fresh air can really do your mental health wonders. Secondly, Home, one of my favourite restaurants in Leeds for their creativity.
And lastly, our own home. It’s been a forever project getting it to the cosy space it is and it’s perfect for our little family. Don’t get me wrong, there are a million and one things to do still on it, but it’s where we grew our little one so lots of sentiment here.
As that last one is a bit of a cop out, I would have to say the grounds of Harewood House. Again, the fresh air is much needed, and the views are a reminder of how mega Yorkshire actually is.

Absolutely Yorkshire explores the countryside town that’s full of adventure
Ilkley is a town that lies on the South Bank of the River Wharfe in the county of West Yorkshire close to Leeds and Bradford. Being on the southern end of the Yorkshire Dales, it is surrounded by acres of charming countryside. Contrasting with its harmonious nature, Ilkley is known for being a well-established climbing destination, as well as thriving in multiple sports, such as tennis and cycling.
Its Victorian architecture, wide streets and floral displays are what make the spa heritage town so unique, with it being a previous winner of Britain in Bloom. To top it o , Ilkley is also home to one of only five Betty’s tea rooms in the UK. Here are more reasons why Ilkley is worth a visit.
Ilkley is the ideal place to relax, enjoy nature and explore history. Just by Ilkley Park
Riverside Gardens is where you will find one of the town’s oldest buildings, Ilkley Manor House. Considered to be one of Ilkley’s treasures, the Manor House is home to a local heritage museum and an art gallery.
Just a 10 minute walk from the Manor House is Ilkley Toy Museum, which is a wonderful place to take a journey back to your childhood and explore the enchanting history of toys throughout the ages.
As well as being home to many historic sights, Ilkley hosts an abundance of events throughout the year. The town is the destination for one of the longestrunning literature festivals in the North, which this year will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Hosted every October, it is a celebration of all things reading and writing. Ikley’s plethora of personality meant that it was used as a location for films such as A Private Function, Calendar Girls and Miss You Already
“Ilkley is the ideal place to relax, enjoy nature and explore history”
CALENDAR GIRLS USED ILKLEY AS A LOCATION
One of the area’s most cherished gems is Ilkley Moor, the perfect place to visit on a clear evening, just as the sun is setting. Also sitting proudly in the North is Ilkley Quarry, also known as the Cow and Calf. The Cow and Calf is a widely popular destination for generations of climbers, with the most known climbing routes being the Milky Way and The New Statesman. If you’re not a climber, Ilkley Moor still makes for a great place to take a stroll and get back in touch with nature.
As well as Ilkley Moor, the town is full of places to take a relaxing stroll. Being very popular at this time of year, Middleton Woods is a great choice. Famous for its vibrant bluebells, it makes for a lovely scenic walk. Ilkley Riverside Gardens is another great destination for a walk, or to spend a sunny afternoon, located alongside the River Wharfe. The village of Ben Rhydding is located north of Ilkley and alongside the
River Wharfe and is where you will find Ben Rhydding Nature Reserve. It is home to various habitats and provides an excellent place to watch birds and butterflies. Visitor parking is available and dogs are allowed if they are on a short lead, so it makes a great place for a day out.
As well as being famous for its climbing roots, Ilkley also o ers access to multiple other sporting activities. The serene town is even home to one of four of Yorkshire’s only public open-air swimming pools. Ilkley Pool and Lido is especially popular in the summer, being a great destination to enjoy the sun, relax and take the children for a family day out. Ilkley indoor pool hosts sessions throughout the week, including Aquacise, Swim For All and Ladies Only sessions. There are also bowls, a putting green and tennis courts, as well as a cute cafe to indulge in. Ilkley is also the ultimate destination for tennis and squash lovers, with it being home to one of Yorkshire’s most renowned tennis and squash clubs. Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club has five indoor and outdoor floodlit courts, as well as 14 grass courts, which cater to all abilities and ages, making it the best experience of tennis. There are also four squash courts, a fitness suite that hosts 60 weekly expert-led classes, and SERVE,
which is the relaxing, atmospheric cafe bar. In addition to Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club, the town is the location of Yorkshire’s third oldest golf club, and has many other sporting organisations, such as rugby clubs, cricket clubs and a karate club, which is run by former UK champion, Mark Outterside.
Additionally, Ilkley is one of Yorkshire’s first-rate cycling hubs, seeing many highprofile cycle races pass through yearly. In 2005 and 2007, the town hosted stages of the Tour of Britain race, with Ilkley Moor being a climb on both occasions. The Tour
de France even passed through in 2014, approaching the town from Otley. Because of this success, the Tour de Yorkshire was created as a spin-o and Ilkley has ever since been included as part of the route.
If you’re looking to stay in Ilkley, it has a range of hotels and guest houses that are highly rated. One of Ilkley’s top cocktail bars, The Gin Lounge Rooms, also houses suites, each of which is named after inspirational women who were ahead of their time. Anne Lister, Ann Walker and Emily Wilding are among many of the trailblazing women that the Edwardian suites were named after. There are multiple luxury rooms, each unique with
their own authentic characteristics, which are available at only £99 a night.
Ilkley Riverside Hotel and Country Pub is another one of the town’s renowned hotels. Situated near Ilkley Riverside Gardens, it o ers incredible views of the River Wharfe and Ilkley Moor. It is considered to be one of the best hotels in Ilkley, winning the Tourism Flower Award multiple times, and boasting of its warm and friendly atmosphere. When it comes to food, the spa town has a range of options of where to dine. Outside the Box Cafe, The Veggie Cafe and Avanti Co ee House are all great places to grab a co ee or a quick bite to eat. If you’re looking for somewhere a little fancier, Sachi’s Restaurant and The Olive Branch are exquisite options. “The name Skipton derives from ‘Sheep-town’ and it remains a champion of its woolly ancestry”
There is so much more here than first meets the eye in the small market-town of Skipton near the (sssshhh) Lancashire border. It’s well worth looking beyond its traditionally acclaimed assets, namely the magnificently preserved mediaeval castle, picturesque canal basin and the vibrant market straddling the High Street four days a week. While those famous features alone provide abundantly the vital ingredients for a grand day out or a short-stay break, Skipton has significantly more to o er when you delve beyond their obvious appeal.
First o , its location ticks several boxes for both residents and visitors alike. Dubbed ‘Gateway to the Dales’, it sits conveniently as a springboard for Wharfedale, arguably the prettiest of the Yorkshire Dales, with its distinctive limestone features and patchwork of drystone walls. From Skipton you can enjoy the proximity of the stunning National Park without the downside of staying in a tourist honeypot. It is a natural base for exploring the area.
Skipton is serviced by key roads, the A59 which runs east/west and the A65 running north/south. By rail it’s connected from Leeds and Bradford on up to Scotland via the iconic Settle-Carlisle railway.
The name Skipton derives from ‘Sheeptown’ and it remains a champion of its
woolly ancestry. At the busy auction mart, a sheepdog recently sold for a record-breaking £16k with local breeders attracting buyers from across the world. Annual events such as Yarndale and Sheep Day celebrate the trade and a High Street hostelry is called The Woolly Sheep; it’s one of a few spots around the town that is allegedly haunted!
Following its recently completed £4.7m refurbishment, the Town Hall is a multi-media venue and hub of Skipton’s cultural heritage with an extensive events programme. It is home to Craven Museum, a vibrant and interactive family-friendly museum which holds more than 60,000 objects including the amazing First
Folio of Shakespeare’s plays, printed in 1623. Who needs Stratford-uponAvon when you can visit Skipton?
Talking of plays, theatre lovers can enjoy regular drama, musicals and concerts at both the rustic Mart Theatre and the petite Skipton Little Theatre. There is also a vibrant live music and comedy scene in various bars throughout the town, which will be showcased in the all new Skipton Sounds Festival this August.
The town is becoming a mecca for foodies with several excellent eateries ranging from fine dining restaurants like the award-winning Le Caveau, underground in a former 16th century prison cell, to a wacky pancake house and a dog-doolally café. There is an award-winning farm shop and an amazing independent wine shop. If craft beers are more your tipple, then there are plenty of bars featuring artisan ales. It’s really no surprise that the UK’s biggest annual food event now takes place in Skipton – the Yorkshire Dales Food & Drink Festival is on 21-23 July this year, don’t miss it. You can pitch a tent for the duration and meet gastro gurus such as James Martin and the Hairy Bikers. Then, in August, the canal basin is the venue for the Skipton Foodie weekend on 12-13 August,
Whether it’s the place you call home or just somewhere you’ve vaguely heard of, it’s time to take a fresh look at Skipton
a free event featuring local and specialty stallholders, including some of the best producers and artisan makers in Yorkshire. Another annual event is a focus for art and craft lovers. Art in the Pen at the Auction Mart 19-20 August features more than 200 artists and crafts. Throughout the year, you can enjoy art at Craven Arts on Otley Street, an artist-led centre for contemporary art. Two red telephone boxes outside the Town Hall have been transformed as art installations and Mill Bridge Gallery features a programme of exhibitions. This year for the first time, the Skipton Now Festival will take place, a monthlong programme of events throughout
August to celebrate all things culture and heritage starting with a Yorkshire Day celebration. From mural painting to music, puppet-making to pop-up cinema, it promises something for everyone.
Shopping in Skipton is a refreshing experience. Interestingly Thomas Spencer from Marks & Spencer came from Skipton originally; today the town has an M&S Food Hall and a few other popular household names. However, there are many more interesting independents here that are an absolute joy to discover. Explore the town to find independent, imaginative shops packed with something that little bit di erent.
Among the gems is C & H Brown. Established in 1974 this wonderful world of
leather and marvellous millinery is about to celebrate its half century. It smells like a traditional old-fashioned shoe shop and is absolutely the place to go for quality English and Italian footwear and bags.
There are a myriad of interesting and gentle walks around the town suitable for all ages and abilities, notably along the LeedsLiverpool Canal and its small tributary the Springs Canal, which winds its way past the towering castle walls and into the beautiful Skipton Woods. For those looking for a longer stroll, the 100 mile walk Lady Anne’s Way starts in Skipton and winds its way north to Penrith taking in many of the historic buildings of the Cli ord family en-route. A short distance from the town centre along the canal towpath you will find Aireville Park, a glorious rolling parkland flanked by a wild meadow. The park dates back to the 1830s when it was created by Henry Allcock as part of the Aireville Estate. Upon his death, wealthy Skipton mill owners, the Dewhurst family, purchased the estate. You can now enjoy everything from a gentle stroll to skateboarding or a BMX pumptrack.
It’s no small wonder that Skipton was deemed by the Sunday Times as ‘best place to live’ not so long ago, but really, don’t take our word for it – or theirs – but check it out for yourself.

Open all year round
If one event captures the deep diversity of Yorkshire’s amazing rural landscape, then it has to be the Great Yorkshire Show. The Show celebrates its 164th anniversary this year and visitors can expect the very best competitions to celebrate farming and countryside, from hill farm sheep to the mighty machinery used in the fertile arable sector.
The cream of British livestock will be on display when Beef Shorthorn, Charolais and Longhorn Cattle Societies all host their national competitions. The Show will feature several thousand sheep, all vying for the top title, with two more breeds, the Badger Face Texel and Castlemilk Moorit, making their stand-alone breed debuts this year. There’s been a record number of sheep entries this year, with a waiting list since April and additional pens drafted in to accommodate numbers which have reached 3,525. Last year had beaten previous records with 3,045.
There are also new equine classes, with Traditional Cobs and Connemara ponies, while the new showjumping classes that debuted last year in the Top Spec White Rose ring are back and are expected to be oversubscribed.
We are proud to highlight the best of Yorkshire across a huge range of animals and produce, displays and demonstrations. We are always looking to the future and our new Innovation marquee will showcase some of the latest farming methods and machinery.
A new look fashion show, Sheep to Chic, will be held on the sheep shearing stage next to Brown Gate to tell the story of how wool gets from sheep to the clothes we wear. The daily show at 12.30pm will feature amateur models from the rural community as well as professionals, and you can read more on this on page 48.
The Great Yorkshire Show Pole Climbing Championships is back this year with the installation of two new 100ft Douglas Fir poles, kindly supplied by Dawnay Estates near Scarborough. The competition sees climbers race to the top of the poles in seconds.
Main Ring performer for this year’s show will be Lorenzo, the incredible horseman who is a huge hit with visitors to the show and last appeared in 2018, and Sporting Soprano Lizzie Jones will be singing twice a day in the Main Ring again. Last year’s sheepdog trials debut was so successful that they are back, this time in an area near Gold Gate.
The Vertu Motors GYS Stage will once again be held in the former fashion show building near Grey Gate. TV host Matt Baker MBE, Peter Wright of The Yorkshire Vet and Countryfile presenter Adam Henson are all appearing in chat shows hosted by TV presenter Christine Talbot.
Food is always in focus at the Show and, in addition to the wealth of stands in the food hall, the fiercely competitive Cheese and Dairy Show will once again include the charity auction, this year raising funds for Herriot Hospice. Last year’s raised over £5,500 for The Samaritans. If honey is more to your taste, the Hives and Honey section o ers a great insight into the importance of bees to the ecosystem as well as some delicious examples of produce. We look forward to welcoming you!
CHARLES MILLS PETER WRIGHT MATT BAKER, CENTRE, RETURNS IN 2023As Halifax soprano Lizzie Jones MBE returns to The Great Yorkshire Show, she discusses life after Danny and why she’ll never live anywhere but Yorkshire
By REBECCA PITCAIRNJuly 2023 is going to be a momentous month for soprano Lizzie Jones. Not only will she return to the Great Yorkshire Show’s main ring to sing classic anthems, but the 38-year-old is also getting married to her partner of five years, Nick Whitehill.
“We’re getting married in Northern Italy, so it’s all very exciting and the children can’t wait. It’s going to be a really wonderful summer,” says the mother-of-three on finding love again following the passing of her husband, Wales international rugby league player Danny Jones, eight years ago.
Danny, who played at club level for Halifax and Keighley Cougars, collapsed and died from an undiagnosed heart condition – later identified as cardiomyopathy, a condition leading to the thickening of the cardiac muscles – while playing for Keighley against London Skolars in May 2015. He left behind Lizzie and their two twins, Bobby and Pheobe, who were just five months old at the time.
Following the 29-year-old’s passing, Lizzie, who lives in Halifax with Nick and their two-year-old daughter, Bella, the twins and Fletch the Cavapoo, teamed up with the Rugby League Benevolent Fund to establish the Danny Jones Defibrillator Fund to raise money to fund defibrillators and cardiac screening within the sporting community.
Cardiomyopathy can be diagnosed following an echocardiogram screening, which was not available to Danny before he died, and Lizzie continues to campaign for the compulsory screening of athletes for hidden cardiac problems.
“After Danny passed, the laws were changed that screening would be compulsory within Championship rugby, as well as the top level of rugby league and now everybody is screened before they play,” she explains. “The charity provides defibrillators, predominantly to the sporting community, but we do now provide to everybody –schools, community groups, church halls and libraries, and we also do cardiac screening days for sports clubs, communities and schools. We've screened over 3,500 people.”
In 2019, Lizzie was awarded an MBE for her services to Rugby League Football and charity, which was presented to her at Windsor Castle by fellow Great Yorkshire Show ambassador, Her Royal Highness Anne, Princess Royal. “It was a really special and emotional day, something you just literally never, ever forget. It was amazing to be recognized for all the changes that have been made in Danny's memory and the di erence his life has made,” Lizzie recalls.
Lizzie, who has been involved with the show since 2018, when she became the first singer to perform in the main ring, will share the biggest arena at the show with acts including performer Lorenzo, the legendary horseman who last appeared in 2018.
“He rides on something like 12 horses, he’s just jaw-dropping. Then there’s the shopping, I love the shopping, and the Yorkshire tweed – the fashion show is back this year and that’s one of my favourite parts,” she says of the event, which celebrates its 164th anniversary this year. “But I do absolutely love the animals
too – the bulls in particular. The first year I was at the show, they got me to do a shoot with the biggest bull you've ever seen. I think he was called Henry and I had to hold on to him. It was the scariest moment in my life, but he was so gorgeous, the animals are just the most stunning from all around Yorkshire.”
Known as the ‘sporting soprano’, Lizzie, who was named Lorraine Kelly’s Inspirational Woman of the Year in 2016, wows stadium crowds acrossthe country and has performed at England football internationals, The Ashes and the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final.
“I started my career in amateur dramatics and I’ve done shows on stage my whole life, but I've never felt more at home than when I’m walking out on the grass and can feel my heels sinking in,” explains Lizzie.
Lizzie, who is now also a singing teacher, says she loves getting the chance to play local venues, such as The Piece Hall in Halifax and Harrogate’s Great Yorkshire Showground, but her favourite has to be Wembley. “It feels quite lonely when you’re walking out on your own into the middle of this huge pitch, but then to have all these people singing back at you, that atmosphere is just incredible, you can’t beat it.”

“I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE ANIMALS AT THE GREAT YORKSHIRE SHOW”
Winners of an amateur fashion model competition had a sneak preview of the famous Great Yorkshire Show catwalk magic after visiting the showground recently. The 12 wannabe models had their first taste of what’s in store as they stepped out in style in garments set to feature on the catwalk in this year’s show.
Entitled “From Sheep to Chic”, the fashion show will be relocated to the sheep shearing stage, hosted by radio presenter Nick Hancock, as it focuses on the use of British wool. The show, every day at 12.30pm, will highlight the link between the sheep we see in the fields and the creation of stylish wool garments.
Selected from more than 70 applicants, the 12 will join the professionals at the event modelling top brands, including collections from several Yorkshire-based designers. A key factor in the selection was a link with farming and the countryside.
Alongside two professional models, the new recruits had an introduction to the catwalk beginning with a session in hair and make up, followed by stepping out in garments from a range of British designers and then a photo shoot.
Bernadette Gledhill, the fashion show coordinator, says: “We were absolutely thrilled at the response to our call out for models, with applicants from all over the country as well as more locally. They coped brilliantly, they were all keen to learn and worked well together. There will of course be further preparation sessions before we get to the event itself. I can’t wait to see them all in the live fashion shows.”
For Luke Johnson, who runs his own agricultural contracting business near
Skipton, it was a fantastic experience. “I absolutely loved it. It was totally amazing,” he enthuses. “I do a bit of acting, but have never modelled, so this was something very di erent. I now can’t wait for the real thing!” Luke is no stranger to the Great Yorkshire Show, having visited on many occasions with his family, including with his grandfather.
Similarly, Louisa Holstead said how much she had enjoyed the day. “It was great fun, I really enjoyed it,” she says. “It’s the first time I’ve done anything like this so I was a bit nervous, but everyone was so friendly and it was good to meet all the other models.” A member of Pontefract Young Farmers, Louisa is a keen rider and has attended the Great Yorkshire Show for as long as she can remember.
The fashion shows will feature garments from a range of suppliers including tailors Brook Taverner who are kindly sponsoring the shows. There are also collections
provided by British Wool brand partners, designer knitwear from Skipton-based Joan Murray and garments from Thirsk-based Galijah. The show also welcomes back Mary Benson, who first became involved in the Great Yorkshire Show as a student 15 years ago and went on to work in London with British fashion designer and couturier Alexander McQueen, and then launched her own brand. Mary now lives in York.
Charles Mills, Show Director, adds: “We are delighted to champion the importance of wool and the vital role that British sheep farmers play in the production of this versatile natural product. The title of our fashion show, “From Sheep to Chic”, sums this up precisely and the new venue for the show could not be more appropriate. For the first time they will be held on the stage in the sheep shearing area, next to more than 2,000 sheep, which will be shown in the competitive classes.
“The link is clear: without sheep the wool industry would be a shadow of what it is today, without sheep farmers there would be a huge gap in British agriculture and our iconic countryside would be a pale imitation of the past.”
“We are delighted to champion the importance of wool”
Allister Nixon, CEO of The Yorkshire Agricultural Society, on being behind one of the county’s biggest events
By HOLLY PHILLIPSQ What three things do you love most about Yorkshire?
A I’ve got two dogs, so the countryside is a big draw here. From the Yorkshire Dales to the North York Moors and my favourite area, the Yorkshire coastline, which is absolutely stunning. Secondly, I’d say that Yorkshire is so accessible, we have everything we need living here. From the fantastic countryside, we’ve got great access to culture, sports and activities, to shopping. Thirdly, I’d have to say the people.
Q What did you want to bring to the Great Yorkshire Show?
A This year is the 164th Great Yorkshire Show, so it has fantastic history and tradition behind it. At its core, it’s an agricultural show, so it’s the treasure of Yorkshire. I really don’t want to do anything to jeopardise that. But what we do need to do is constantly look at ways to keep evolving the show so it remains fresh, exciting and interesting for our visitors, and relevant to our farming families. The sheep dog trials are a perfect example of this. We showcased them in the main ring last year and that was so well
received that we are looking to have it as a permanent feature of the show this year. We’ve also brought back pole climbing, which is a fantastic spectacle that’s been absent for a couple of years. New to the show, we’ve got a ‘Sheep to Chic’ fashion show to celebrate sheep farming and the versatility of British wool. We’ve also got a new innovation zone at the show that demonstrates today’s higher tech approach to British farming and has displays and talks about the latest agricultural innovations. So it’s really about keeping the show fresh and interesting without losing its tradition and its agricultural core.
Q Why is the show so important for Yorkshire?
A First o , this show is a celebration for Yorkshire. It promotes farming, food and rural life in the county and is a place where families can have a fun, interesting and informative day. There’s something for everyone here at the show. In 2019, we did an economic impact survey of the show, which demonstrated that the Great Yorkshire Show contributed £40m of the Yorkshire economy. For me, the real value of the show
goes both beyond the pure finances and numbers. It has a great importance for me because it acts as a fantastic facilitator. By that I mean the show provides opportunities for farming communities to come together. There are so many touch points during the four days of the show, and it o ers great support to farmers all in one place.
Q How does the Yorkshire Agricultural Society strive to inspire the next generation about British agriculture?
A We do a lot in this space because that’s one of the objectives of the society. We try to engage children at a young age. We have a Springtime Live event that’s in April, which hopefully engages the curiosity of our youngest visitors. We try to immerse them in all things farming, food and countryside. Coming up in June, we are going to welcome around 6,000 primary school children to the showground, to our Countryside Days event which is over two days. We have our education discovery zone at the show. We run an Apple Day event at the showground in autumn. Where possible, we are out and about supporting schools and careers fairs. We try to support the next generation of farmers through our future farmer network, which o ers a tremendous opportunity to bring all people in farming together through a social and knowledge exchange event, and we provide training and bursary opportunities through that network.
Q Finally, what does the rest of 2023 have in store?
A The showground and the society are busy all year round. We’ve got our awardwinning facilities (Great Holiday Home Show, Yorkshire Event Centre, Harrogate Caravan Park, for example), so all of these are very busy throughout the year. The next event we’ve got at the showground is the Great Holiday Home Show, which is in September and is set to celebrate the very best of the great outdoors. This is a show that’s been running since 1976 at The Lawns in Hull, which has moved to the showground this year, so it’s got quite a bit of history. It’s really another great family day out. Then, of course, the society works all year round to deliver its objectives and to support and promote agriculture. We have, in autumn, a Women in Farming network, which will host its 10th anniversary gathering. Our future farmers will have an event. We o er teaching training courses now after the show. So there’s a lot going on, there’s a lot of activity throughout the year.
New classes and old favourites were on the agenda at last year’s Great Yorkshire Show. The final day of four saw the culmination of the sheepdog trials in the Main Ring, with the Young Handler prize going to Scotland’s competitor, 16-year-old Tyler Mckinlay from Biggar and her dog, Mel. The hard-fought Senior title went to Peter Morgan of County Down in Ireland with dog Mosse.
Other highlights included the Yorkshire Shepherdess Amanda Owen getting some top tips on sheep shearing from world champion Matt Smith, before getting stuck into a demonstration in the Cookery Theatre.
The Supreme Dairy Championship went to the Coates and Greenhouse families from Baildon, with their Holstein Intermediate cow, Enchanted Beemer Abbiene.
The Heavy Horse Turnouts attracted plenty of support from the crowds, with the Championship going to John Goodwin’s Shire pair, Henry and Oscar, driven by Sarah McLellan, and Reserve going to the Daniel Thwaites Brewery team driven by Richard Green.
New classes for 2022 included beef and sheep pairs and group championships. There were also new show jumping classes in the TopSpec
White Rose ring for the first time, with the White Rose Open 1.20m class going to Suzy Golding riding Tony Mansfield’s Antigone Z. It was a return to competition for Suzy, who recently had a daughter, and for Antigone Z after injury.
The Blythewood Pairs winners led the cattle into the Main Ring for the Grand Parade, before the best Native and Continental Beef and Dairy pairs were chosen. The Dairy Pair title was won by Holsteins, a second triumph for Supreme Dairy Champion Enchanted Beemer Abbiene, shown by Ben Coates, with AC Birker’s Junior cow Whinchat Abbott Angela, shown by Niels van Beek.
The Native Beef ribbons went to Beef Shorthorns, with Geraint Price with Evans and Price’s Strawberries and Cream and Helen Morgan with Mike and
Tracy Severn’s Coldrochie Leif, while the Continental pair of British Limousin were David Douglas with AW Jenkinson Farms’ Whinfell Park Marilyn and Steven O’Kane with Thor Atkinson’s Upper Ffrid.
Charles Mills, Show Director, reflects: “Last year was a wonderful four days, which saw some of the finest animals in the country compete. A Royal visit from the Princess Royal, two World Cattle Congresses, record breaking sheep numbers, sheep dog trials in the Main Ring and a new chat show on the GYS Stage are just a flavour of some of what we hosted – and we now look forward to the 2023 edition.”

Franco Manca are pioneers of the sourdough pizza, but what work goes into achieving this? We speak to their brand area chef, EmilianoRuzzu, to find out more
By MARK KEBBLEQ How long have you worked at Franco Manca and what originally attracted you to joining the business?
A I first started working at Franco Manca in 2011 as a pizza chef, before leaving to work in other restaurants. I then re-joined Franco Manca in 2017, initially as a head chef, before starting in my current role of area chef for the north of England in 2018. I was initially attracted to the business because I wanted to learn more about Neapolitan pizza, and Franco Manca, in my opinion, is the best on the high street.
Q What does your role as brand area chef of North England involve?
A In my role as area chef, I am responsible for many things, including recruitment, training, menu development and ensuring our high standards are always met. I oversee 10 Franco Manca restaurants, covering Manchester, Birmingham, Lincoln and up into Scotland. There is currently only one Franco Manca in Yorkshire, based on Trinity Street in Leeds, but we soon hope there will be many more! We’re hoping to grow our presence in the north of England this year.
Q What makes your pizzas di erent?
A We are known as the sourdough pizza pioneers, and we make our dough fresh each and every day at all 70 of our restaurants. This focus on sourdough, as
it should be, is a massive di erentiator between Franco Manca and other high street pizza restaurant brands. We also use as much authentic Italian produce as possible, including tomatoes and mozzarella, ensuring we use the highest quality ingredients across every menu item. Something else that helps Franco Manca stand out is that everything is prepared freshly on site; we don’t have a central kitchen and there is minimal freezing across the entire business.
Q Can you explain the cooking process?
A Our pizza ovens operate between 430450 degrees, and our pizzas are typically cooked in there for between one minute and 90 seconds. This is dependent on the toppings, and how much goes on to a pizza. Rather than just drop the pizza in the oven, it’s important that it is lifted up on the paddle after the first 30 seconds of cooking; this prevents the base from sticking to the oven. We know the pizza is perfectly cooked when the cheese has melted and the sourdough crust has turned crisp, golden and slightly charred.
Q In your job, are you often looking at new flavour combinations?
A I work very closely with the wider menu development team, in order to help advise on what we feel will be most popular, especially in the region I operate in. We are regularly tracking the latest food trends, to see how we can incorporate these onto our pizzas. Our menus have a seasonal focus, and change twice a year, with lighter pizzas featuring during the spring and summer months, and some heartier and more comforting pizzas taking over during the autumn and winter.
Q Does sustainability play a role in the company?
A We do our very best to keep plastic to an absolute minimum across our restaurants, switching to things like paper straws and recyclable pizza boxes. We are entirely committed to using fresh, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients where possible, which is certainly an e ective way to reduce supply chain emissions. We also make sure that all of our paper, cardboard and glass waste is recycled, by utilising the services of a third-party provider across all of our restaurants.
Q Do you have a personal favourite when it comes to the current menu?
A My favourite pizza that’s currently on the menu is the new No.9. This delicious pizza consists of our fresh, homemade sourdough base topped with wild mushrooms, burrata, tru e pesto, mozzarella and fresh basil. It’s part of our summer menu and is a really light and super fresh pizza –perfect for the warmer weather.
Q Pizzas aside, what else do you o er?
A Despite being known as a pizza restaurant, we do o er much more across our menus. Guests can order Mediterranean sharing platters, charcuterie, light bites including our incredible Tuscan fennel sausage and bu alo mozzarella bruschetta, salads and desserts. One of my favourite Franco Manca dishes is actually the yellowfin tuna salad, with roasted baby plum tomatoes, Kalamata olives, yellow peppers, mixed leaves, shallots and a creamy dressing.

Welcome to Absolutely Yorkshire's special section devoted to everything that glitters across the county. Inside, we meet the mother and daughter team bringing a little heart and soul to the industry, showcase nine of the best summer trinkets, take a colourful look at the latest from Rolex, and Berry's Jewellers discuss how they achieve timeless quality with their creations.
Annie Rennison, one half of the team at Renné Jewellery alongside her mother Helen, on bringing a little heart and soul to the industry
Q Pre-Renné, what were you both working in?
A I was 18 when we began Renné, I had recently returned from travelling and on the search for a career path that fulfilled my creative passion – and my mum had her hands full with my younger twin siblings!
Q Was there a particular moment that inspired you to launch your own jewellery business?
A We were always hunting for jewellery that had soul and a lived in feel, like the pieces you pick up at French markets. I was doing a silversmithing course in London’s Hatton Garden and mum had previously trained as a silversmith, it was a match waiting to happen and we saw a gap in the market to create jewellery that told its own story.
Q Was it tough to get o the ground?
A We were lucky that Renné snowballed organically. Our jewellery is designed to be stacked and layered so our customers continued returning to build their collections. As our product is worn and loved by customers daily it was word of mouth that propelled our business and still does – we will be forever grateful to our lovely customers.
Q How did you want to be di erent?
A We wanted to create timeless jewellery that could last forever and pieces that could be interpreted by the wearer as they like. Adding symbolic charms that act as talismans, personalised pieces that are filled with sentiment and semiprecious stones that have life-enhancing properties. Our customers create their own collections that express their individuality.
Q &A
Q How is your jewellery created?
A Our workshop is above our shop at 8 Grange Road, Darlington. We have a bench to shelf motto and can be proud that 90% of our collection is made in house, in Britain. We have a small team that work from Birmingham’s jewellery quarter hand-making our semi-precious rings, we work with a gold plating jewellers in Hatton Garden and our chains are made in Shropshire by a family-run business.
Q What materials do you use?
A We use sterling silver and 9 carat gold.
Q What are your most popular creations?
A Our Open Oolana Bangle is an original piece that has continued to be a best seller, and our iconic T Bar Hoops that are so easily identified as Rennè.
Q Have you evolved in any way since 2014?
A We are continuously evolving, daily!
You couldn’t survive without being one step ahead. We switched to using recycled metals, recyclable luxury packaging, building an e-commerce experience similar to the service we o er in store – we don’t stop looking for avenues to enhance our business.
Q How is it running a business with your mother?
A A dream come true! We have always been exceptionally close, having your partner on the same wavelength as you was invaluable to our journey in the beginning. You have a constant loyal support by your side. Although I will say work/life balance has been di cult to juggle as Renné has grown, you have to put in the extra e ort to spend time together outside of work.
Q What can you tell us about your boutique and the kind of experience we can expect?
A The opposite to your regular jewellers. A customer recently exclaimed: “I could live in here!” Our displays are mainly antique cabinets and displays found locally or in France matching the charm of our jewellery. Fresh flowers are dotted everywhere, inspiring imagery, exceptional knowledge and customer service. We wanted to create an atmosphere our customers feel at home in, a space they are comfortable to choose pieces that will bring them happiness and joy every day.
Q What’s to come from you this summer and beyond?
A We are so excited to be launching a new collection of mini charms, stand alone chains, limited edition pieces and a twist on our best sellers. We are continuing to channel our energy online whilst keeping our roots based in our beautiful shop.

In 2015, being the inquisitive type, Oliver Go e decided to replace the dead battery in his fairly pricey, branded watch. When he opened it up, however, he discovered a disappointing reality. Staring back at him was a hollow case with an underwhelming, plastic quartz movement inside. The watch felt heartless and Oliver was sure he could make something better. He went in search of a partner and soon met Gordon Fraser, an industrial designer who shared his passion for doing things properly. Oliver and Gordon agreed on a plan to create a welldesigned, beautifully engineered watch, with a mechanical beating heart, for the price of a high street fashion watch. Within 12 months, the first mechanical Marloe watch was sold and Marloe Watch Company was born. In the years since they are proud of the reputation they’ve built in the flourishing British watch industry. It takes inspiration, craftsmanship and patience to make a beautiful mechanical watch. They put those same qualities into everything they do, from meticulous design research to lifetime customer service. When you first unbox your Marloe watch and feel its heart ticking in your hand, they think you’ll agree that it’s well worth waiting for. They know the value of time. They know how fast it can speed by, and how easy it can be to fritter away. In an age where everything is instant and disposable, they want to create something enduring: a Marloe watch isn’t just about keeping time, it’s about spending it well. A mechanical watch is a symbol of human ingenuity, craftsmanship and endeavour. Every watch is inspired by a story of human endeavour – of people who dedicated their time to something extraordinary.
Their passion, belief and tenacity helped them achieve what others thought was impossible. These were people who challenged themselves, who never took the easy path or cut corners. They knew that nothing worthwhile comes easy and that it’s worth taking the time to do things properly.
Their design process includes immersing themselves in these stories for months, unearthing evocative details that influence every design decision.
They give their customers regular insights into the process through online films and blog posts. Every watch is delivered with a specially designed booklet retelling the backstory and how it translates into the design details.
Their watches are produced in batches of up to 1,000 and each watch is finished with a unique serial number. Their commitment to high standards and uncompromising attention to detail means they quality check every single watch by hand.
They hope that wherever your Marloe watch takes you, and whatever adventures you share, it’s time well spent.

In conversation with Charlotte Staerck, co-founder of The Handbag Clinic, as they open a store at Fenwick York
by ALEXIA EVANSQ Where did your passion for handbags stem from?
A I’m from a small village in the North East of England where nothing really happens in terms of fashion. When I was seven, my godmother bought me this handbag with embroidered flower detailing. It immediately sparked my interest and became my new school bag. In comparison with my classmates’ mundane satchels, I stuck out like a sore thumb. I told everyone it was designer and flung it over my shoulder. Later on, with my first proper income, I saved up and bought my first real designer bag which was from DKNY. I began this cycle of selling my older bags on eBay to be able to a ord new ones.
Q As well as restoring handbags, how does the resale aspect work?
A Essentially, we buy old, worn bags and give them a new lease of life. We take details on bags for sale via our online form or you can bring your bag instore and an expert can assess it there.
Q What makes The Handbag Clinic sustainable?
A We created The Handbag Clinic way before sustainability became popular. Most of the criticism at the beginning stemmed from lack of understanding. People couldn’t contemplate why we wanted to recycle dusty old bags. By not creating anything new, we are one of the few fashion brands that is fully circular. We try to save every bag physically possible using the most environmentally friendly products to clean and touch up.
“Stylistically, handbags are the root of an outfit”
Q Could you tell us about the most exciting item you have restored?
A One of our customers owns five diamond encrusted crocodile skin Birkin bags. In my whole life I had never seen a bag of that calibre. She loved the work so much that we went and picked up the whole collection to restore. Another really exciting bag we resold was an ostrich Birkin back in 2017, which went for £14,000 – the biggest sale we had had at that point.
Q What do you want customers to take away from shopping at The Handbag Clinic?
A The most important part of the business is to be accessible to all. Our brand philosophy stems from doing everything we can to make sure that luxury feels special, without feeling elitist. We don’t want people to feel excluded from purchasing a handbag. No matter the circumstance, everyone is allowed to feel nervous or unsure about making a big spend and our team are there to talk through any questions and doubts. We will also restore any bag, designer or not. We definitely don’t discriminate! It’s really about maintaining the emotional connection people have with their bags that
resonate happy times, as well as lengthening the longevity and value of the product.
Q How do you feel Yorkshire is doing in terms of circular shopping?
A The Yorkshire region is up there as one of our top areas in highest online sales. There’s still work to do though with regards to the restoration side. It’s a case of changing attitudes towards really treasuring items by learning how to bring them back to life. Rather than running a pair of Louboutin’s into the ground, if they were regularly restored, the value of the product would remain high, as well as benefiting financially in the long run.
Q Which handbag is your current favourite?
A All of my bags are from The Handbag Clinic and my favourite brand is Chanel. A standout in my collection is a silver Chanel Boy bag and a pink mini square Chanel that I love as well.
Q What are your top tips for purchasing a designer handbag?
A If you’re wanting to start investing in fashion I would definitely advise starting
with a handbag. Stylistically, they are the root of an outfit. For someone’s first designer bag, I would recommend buying something that’s comfortable and wearable, but that will equally hold its value. This tends to be all-time classics where styles keep to minimal changes. If you then decide to sell it, you can easily move up that ladder and get increasingly more value out of your items. It’s easier to do this with handbags rather than say shoes, for example, because they are less hard-wearing.
Q What are you most looking forward to with The Handbag Clinic this year?
A We’re looking to get involved with more events around Yorkshire. It would be great to be part of fashion week this year and speak at sustainable pop ups in the North. handbagclinic.co.uk

Cycling with my family brings me so much joy and I’d love for more families to benefit from the thrill of being out on their bikes together. Apart from the obvious health benefits of getting out in the fresh air and being physically active, cycling is a great way to build resilience and promote independence in children.
In fact, the physical and mental health benefits of cycling as a family with your children are numerous. It’s a fun form of exercise that improves balance and coordination in toddlers and young children. For the slightly older ones, cycling is a great way to shake o the stress of school, especially during exam time. It’s the perfect opportunity to bond as a family.
As a mum of a two-year-old living in Yorkshire, I know first hand the amazing cycle routes and paths this beautiful county has to o er. And cycling through Yorkshire is something everyone needs to do!
For nature lovers, the six-mile route from Barnsley to the Old Moor RSPB Reserve in the heart of Yorkshire’s Dearne Valley is a wonderful family-friendly ride. At the end of the route, the whole tribe can recharge at the beautiful Reserve, see how many species of birds you can spot and refuel at the café or picnic area. We absolutely love this route in the spring when everything is bursting with new life. Everyone loves heading to the coast in summer and the Scarborough to Whitby Railpath is perfect for family cycling. It is a little hilly in parts, but I’d definitely recommend the slightly easier and shorter route from Scarborough to Robin Hood’s Bay to take in the stunning Yorkshire coastline.
If you’re looking for a route for novice cyclists and families, you can’t go wrong with the York to Selby path. York has something of a reputation for being a “cyclist’s city” and there’s certainly been much e ort put into cycling infrastructure in and around the city over recent years.
The pandemic certainly set the wheels in motion by reigniting the country’s love of getting outside on a bike and the popularity of cycling is still growing every day. However, while many of us are embracing getting around on two wheels, when it comes to families cycling more together or children cycling to school, we’re miles behind our Dutch counterparts.
A recent survey showed that in the UK, less than four in ten parents feel comfortable allowing their children to cycle to school, compared with the Netherlands where half of primary school children and 75% of secondary school students cycle to school. Many parents believe their children would benefit from cycling lessons in school like the Dutch, where primary school children often take a cycle exam just before heading to secondary school, to prepare them for travelling further distances independently.
I believe positive role models could also make an encouraging impact on families if they were able to see other families, such as the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children, out and about as a cycling family.
I work for Sudocrem, the multi-tasking skincare cream with an o ce in Castleford, and in 2021 we launched the Sudocrem Cycle More campaign with Paralympian cyclist and mother of two, Dame Sarah Storey. It’s been a highlight of my career so far and something I am incredibly proud of. As a brand, we have always championed healthy lifestyles and encouraging families to cycle more seemed like a good way to build on Play More, our campaign to promote outdoor play with Chris Packham.
We also know that My Little Sudocrem has become very popular amongst cyclists, especially to soothe ‘cyclist’s bum’. It’s perfect for relieving chafing and patches of dry skin, so make sure you pop a pot in your rucksack along with the all-important snacks and bottles of water (lots of water!). The majority of British families cite a lack of knowledge of cycle routes as the main reason for not choosing to cycle as a family, along with a lack of infrastructure such as cycle lanes and fear of other road users. However, despite their concerns, many want to cycle more as a family and are simply waiting for the weather to get better. So, get your tribe together and let’s go Dutch this summer – by getting on yer bike!

oral surgery department of Royal Preston Hospital, so have experience dealing with complex trauma cases etc. At U Dentistry I receive referrals from other local dental practices for the removal of wisdom teeth and/or teeth that some dentists might prefer not to remove themselves.
Q As a practice, what treatments can U Dentistry o er patients?
A At U Dentistry, I work alongside a team of very skilled clinicians. One of the owners of U Dentistry is Specialist Endodontist Alyn Morgan. Alyn accepts referrals for root canal treatment from dentists all over the region. Martin Harris, Dominic O’Hooley and I can all place dental implants, which assist patients with missing teeth or loose dentures. There are three superb dental hygienists who work at the practice. The clinicians are supported by a very proficient, helpful and friendly nursing and administration team.
Q How would you promote U Dentistry to our readers?
A U Dentistry is an outstanding facility that is able to provide the highest standard of care in a calm and sophisticated environment. The addition of Surgery 4 has resulted in us being able to treat patients without delay. We have capacity to welcome new patients to the practice and enjoy meeting them to assist with their dental care. With plentiful, free and secure parking, a visit to us is as easy as it gets. We are able to accommodate wheelchairs, walking aids and pushchairs with all four surgeries on the ground floor. It sounds like a cliché, but we really do go the extra mile to ensure that patients have the healthiest teeth in their smiles and the biggest smiles on their faces.
The U Dentistry practice in Ilkley opened in 2005, and stepping into its shiny reception room, you are struck by the sense you are encountering the very best. The reception team immediately put you at ease, a feeling that is accentuated thanks to the calm, welcoming atmosphere of the waiting area.
A custom designed surgery is where we find Dr James Webster, who joined U Dentistry back in 2021, the latest clinician to join the exceptional team. Absolutely Yorkshire sat down with Dr Webster to find out why this practice o ers something di erent.
Q You joined U Dentistry in 2021 - what attracted you to the company?
A U Dentistry was founded by a dentist who is a close relative of mine, so I have been aware of the practice since its inception in 2005. I have actually been a patient of U Dentistry for many years, as have my closest family members. We are all very happy patients! I have seen the practice grow and felt proud of the fantastic reputation that the business has. I was delighted to have the opportunity to join the team in 2021 and love working here.
Q What dental services do you provide?
A I am a general dental surgeon, which means I am able to provide family dental care to patients of all ages. I also work in the

If you dream of waking up feeling gorgeous after a perfect night’s sleep, then the team at Kiss the Moon are here to help. Their entire range of 100% natural night-time aromatherapy products are focused on helping you get a better night’s rest and looking after your skin while you are sleeping. The inspiration behind the brand came from founder Jo Foster’s need to get her own sleep back on track while managing a busy corporate life full of deadlines and jetlag-inducing travel. “Good sleep is fundamental to a successful beauty regime because it is while we sleep that the most active cell renewal happens. That’s why poor sleep so often results in poor skin. Our products not only help you get to sleep, but also give your skin the nourishment it needs overnight as it repairs and regenerates,” says Jo. Now in their ninth year, Kiss the Moon have now got over 50 beauty awards under their belt. Among their most awarded products are their three night-time Creams (the deliciously scented orange blossom & geranium GLOW Body Cream; the richly rejuvenating rose & frankincense LOVE Night Cream for Hands; and the soothing lavender & bergamot DREAM Night Cream for Feet). Each one is made with super-nourishing shea butter whipped with flower water and with added essential oils to provide a boost of nutrients and leave skin smelling amazing. The eponymous founder of Ian Hazard Architects on being inspired by his surroundings, the joy of travel and stand out Yorkshire projects
By IAN HAZARDEVOLUTION
“IT IS WORKING WITH AND FOR PEOPLE THAT REALLY MATTERS ON EVERY PROJECT”CHARITY, ROBIN HOOD'S BAY, PHOTO BY SCOTT WICKING REBECCA HAZARD, PRACTICE MANAGER, AND IAN HAZARD
My passion as a child was drawing. I loved to draw. I would spend hours with a pencil and some paper, drawing pretty much anything that came to mind! But it was when I spent a week working in a local architects practice at age 14 that I started drawing buildings, and thinking about architecture.
By the end of that first week of work experience, I had decided to become an architect. I spent that whole week drawing buildings, at a beautiful big old drawing board, and apparently, you could earn a living from it. My mind was made up!
Embarking upon the long journey to become an architect, my career has exposed me to a very broad range of professional experience, from the design of a university on top of a shopping mall in Vancouver, to working on Battersea Power Station in London, to building a remote Buddhist school in Ladakh, and to building a knowledge and enrichment centre on a barge in Doha.
Whilst the primary focus was always to work on the design of some form of building, it was working with and for people that really mattered on every project. It is working with people that makes the job.
I set up my own practice in 2012, at the tail end of the recession. At that time, the best design orientated architectural practices in the UK were based in the big cities, generally in the south. I had grown tired of living in the city in order to work for a good practice. The city was not my home, and I missed being in nature. There weren’t any design orientated practices hiring young architects in the north east at that time, so there was only one thing for it – to set out on my own!
Over the years I had gained a great deal of design experience working on large, exciting, international projects. I wanted to bring that experience of creating engaging contemporary architectural design to local clients working on their own properties and projects.
At architecture school, you learn how to design buildings. Nobody teaches you how to run a business. So, setting up the practice has certainly been
ROBIN HOOD’S BAY
“It’s really our first completed project”
The project at Ocean View is the internal remodelling and repair of a Grade II Listed end terrace cottage to provide a modern and comfortable permanent private residence. The building was built around 1675-1725 and through its lifetime has been put to many uses by fishermen, master mariners and marine biologists. Although the building has a rich and diverse history, very little evidence of that remains within the internal spaces of the dwelling.
The design proposals for the internal remodelling of the project therefore allow for the sensitive repair of the historic fabric that remains, along with the installation of new contemporary joinery linings and fittings. The proposals also seek to reinforce an understanding of height and verticality, which characterises the buildings of the Bay, as you climb the old stairs from the Lower Ground level at the Dock side, up four storeys to the sky filled Attic.
“This project reflects our approach of bringing new things together with old things so that both elements benefit from each other”
The Old Windmill exists as a ruined, early 19C, red brick tower located close to the village of Appleton Roebuck, South West of the City of York. When our client purchased the Grade II Listed tower, planning permission and Listed Building Consent had already been granted to convert the abandoned mill into a private dwelling by the means of a small, traditional style, extension to the building.
Our approach to the design of the conversion and extension of the Old Windmill was to start with the lessons learned from its historical context. As a building typology, the design of windmills was constantly looking toward the future, for new technologies and approaches that would improve the process of milling, and to make life easier for the hard working miller.
The new cluster of small outbuildings connected to the tower facilitates the functional conversion of the windmill into a modern family dwelling. The design proposals include the integration of renewable energy sources for the heating and hot water supplies.
challenging at times. I find that we are constantly evolving to ensure that the service we o er is relevant to our clients. When it comes to architectural design our focus has always been toward contemporary design. However, over the years we have learned a lot from working with existing, traditional buildings. Learning from traditional approaches to building construction has taught us a lot, and our approach to contemporary design has evolved as a result.
From day one, the intent of the practice has been to engage our clients in the design process, so that it becomes a process that they are central to and fully involved within. This process starts with listening to them, rather than talking at them.
Whilst I have always enjoyed drawing, in order to draw something, you need to feel inspired. That inspiration for me has always come from being immersed in nature, particularly the sea. Increasingly we find that the built environments that we create for ourselves separate us from nature, rather than connect us to it. Being inspired by nature ensures that a respect for nature and a desire to seek connection with it remains central to our work. We live between the North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Coast. The working day usually begins with an early morning cycle to the studio, along the seafront. There’s no better way to remind yourself why you do, what you do.
At the end of the day, buildings are designed for people. So, we will always be interested in working with like-minded people, whatever the project. However, it is increasingly important for us as a practice to actively engage with the
community that we live and work in. The Whitby Lobster Hatchery project has been a fantastic example of a true community-initiated project that we helped to get o the ground. Hopefully we can help develop more projects like this, so that we can contribute to our region and its continued development.

WHITBY HARBOUR
“Truly a communityinitiated project”
The practice has been asked by a collective of Whitby fishermen to help them develop initial, outline proposals for the design of a new lobster hatchery facility, within the existing Whitby Fish Market building along Pier Road in Whitby Harbour.
The outline proposals have been developed to illustrate the broad aspirations of the Whitby Lobster Hatchery & Marine Discovery Centre and to assist the project team in generating interest in the project and to secure the funding necessary to commission a formal building design process.
The Whitby Lobster Hatchery aims to protect Whitby’s fishing heritage by conserving the local lobster populations. The hatchery will release 100,000 juvenile lobsters into the sea each year; offsetting the number of lobsters caught by Whitby’s fishing fleet, and protecting the region’s lobster industry for generations to come.
The project has three core values: conservation, education and research. Along with providing the hatchery facility to conserve lobster stocks, the proposals include an interactive exhibition and education centre, to inspire and engage the public.
At this stage, the architectural design response to the site and to the project brief are broad outline proposals, that consider ways in which redundant elements of the existing fish market building might be re-utilised to provide for the requirements of the hatchery, and to create a new, iconic, destination in Whitby’s historic harbour.

Yorkshire company James Hare has introduced a chic new velvet design this summer that brings a stylish hint of safari into the home.
Animal prints and patterns are always popular, but the new Shalimar Collection is introducing a wilder element to the James Hare fabric range with Tiger Velvet. This luxurious velvet captures the essence of a tiger’s incredible patterning as it has been spray dyed, a rarely used process that makes the finished e ect more natural and realistic, allowing the velvet’s surface to sinuously move with the light.
Tiger Velvet looks sensational as upholstery on sofas and chairs, but will also make beautiful cushions. Sleek, textural and tactile, this velvet is going to make a statement in any room.
From humble beginnings in a Yorkshire cottage, back in 1865, to establishing themselves as Britain’s leading silk specialist, enjoy the rich tapestry that is the story of James Hare.
James Hare celebrates its 150th anniversary and was honoured with a visit from Princess Ann, the Queen's daughter. HRH was shown around the warehouse, design and pattern department and unveiled a celebratory plaque. The company marked its remarkable history with two distinctive interior collections, Evolution and Richmond, which fuse heritage inspirations with contemporary style.
During the turbulent times of the Covid pandemic and Brexit, James Hare continued to expand and innovate by introducing a passementerie collection of trims, braids, drops and fringes for the first time.

There’s nothing original about believing that Lake Como is the most beautiful place in the world. This region has been attracting visitors since Roman times and remains a celebrity magnet; George Clooney, Madonna, Richard Branson and Sylvester Stalone are just some of the international crowd known to have villas here (as any local taxi driver will tell you). It’s easy to see
why: the lake is breathtakingly beautiful, its clear waters surrounded by strikingly lush flora, with mountains in the distance and grand Italian villas and dreamy villages sprinkled around the coast. Our destination is Tremezzina, 90 minutes’ drive from Milan and we’re feeling the part in our rented Fiat Cincquecento. There’s one road that runs around the lake and it’s a narrow and windy one, best suited to a small and nimble car. It’s only April and the tra c is already hotting up – because the only problem with Lake
Como is that its beauty attracts a lot of visitors. So we’re at a definite advantage, season-wise, though it’s also not quite warm enough to swim in the lake. We pass through pretty villages with impressive churches and dreamy lake views, struck by the intriguing combination of palm trees and mountains that characterises the area.
The Grand Hotel Tremezzo transports you straight into the Belle Epoque glamour, its vast presence looming majestically from an elevated position overlooking the lake. It’s cinematic in scale and strikingly beautiful.
Built in 1910, the hotel has always been family-owned and dedicated to elegance and luxury, and routinely features high up on lists of Europe’s top hotels. Open from March to November only, it avoids ever feeling dated by tweaking its interiors during the rest period – so the feeling is contemporary luxury in a traditional setting, and it’s brilliantly done. Every detail is considered, from the genius use of orange (awnings, sun umbrellas, stripes on crockery, leather accessories, even the ribbon on the doorman’s Panama hat – but
think sunshine, not easyjet) to the hotel’s own scent that wafts from vast di users throughout the building. Imagine yourself in the golden age of travel, staying here before continuing onto the Venice Lido, or to a sanatorium in Switzerland, or alternatively, imagine yourself as an extra in a Wes Anderson film.
Our rooftop suite is magnificent, with a large terrace o ering views of the lake as well as the hotel’s beautiful gardens and pool, all of it spectacular. Loungers on the terrace are well-positioned, as is
the sunken hot tub. Our suite is stylishly decorated in a grandeur befitting the architecture, but with a contemporary feel. There are green walls and antique cabinets, a comfortable modern sofa and a large gilt-framed mirror on the wall that, we discover to our enormous surprise – and only when coming across an unidentified remote control – is in fact a TV. Bathroom products are all unique to the hotel, with its signature scent, and there’s even a bottle of perfume for you to use during your stay. We smell fantastic all weekend.
“Imagine yourself in the golden age of travel, continuing on to the Venice Lido, or to a sanatorium in Switzerland”
GRAND HOTEL TREMEZZO
HOTEL LOBBY
2023 is the Year of the Coast, and, with 26 miles of spectacular coastline found here in the North York Moors National Park – sandwiched between beautiful countryside and the North Sea – what better time to come and celebrate our surroundings? We also have plenty of space for a stay in 2024, for those who are looking to plan ahead.
Thirley Cotes Farm showcases a selection of Grade II self-catering holiday homes set between the seaside towns of Scarborough and Whitby and sleeping 2 - 42 across 8 traditional yet contemporary pet-friendly cottages, each with a private hot tub and bordered by 21 acres of wildlife and woodland.
Our country-coastal hideaways are available for parties large and small and we are proud to say that the Thirley Cotes Farm collection is not only owned by us, but also highly rated 4 or 5 stars.
If visiting to experience the natural wonder of the Yorkshire coast or seasonal splendour of the North York Moors, you will feel instantly away from the day to day. All you have to do, is decide where to discover first.
Set between Broxa and Harwood Dale Forest, there are plenty of tracks and trails to explore from the doorstep and we are just a short drive from Scarborough South Bay, Robin Hood’s Bay and Grosmont. York is also an hour away.
North Yorkshire lays claim to one of the most beautiful coastlines the country has to offer and is home to charming villages clinging to the cliffs, such as Staithes, Filey and Ravenscar. So it goes without saying that the surrounding scenery is a nature lovers paradise, including our secluded rural estate (listen out for our resident barn owls).
Whether searching for 2 or as part of a bigger group, Thirley Cotes Farm provides a chance to truly switch off in style, complete with romantic retreats, hikers havens and family boltholes.
The hotel has five restaurants – a lot for somewhere that has fewer than 90 rooms (recent refurbishments have made the rooms bigger, which means fewer actual rooms, but more luxurious ones). La Terrazza pays tribute to the late Gualtiero Marchesi, the pioneering Italian chef credited as being the father of modern Italian cuisine. Our dinner is a feast of lobster, veal with foie gras, seabass and the signature highlight, a risotto with sa ron and a large square of gold leaf. This comes with a certificate, because each dish is numbered – we’re 4,350 and 4,351. Travelling around is easy by ferry from just outside the hotel. Tremezzina is 15 minutes away from Belaggio, known as the Pearl of Lake Como – it’s one of the lake’s prettiest villages and famed for its colourful centre and sillk products, while the stylish town of Menaggio is 15 minutes’ drive to the north, and the city of Como, worth a visit for its impressively ornate cathedral, is 40 minutes away, on the way to Milan. Life doesn’t get much better than a weekend on Lake Como. grandhoteltremezzo.com

Travellers rejoice! London City will soon be the world’s first airport to abandon the annoying liquids rules. The 100ml limit on fluids has been a source of annoyance and delays ever since it began. Having your toothpaste confiscated because the tube’s capacity is 125ml ('but it’s almost empty!') is almost as irritating as having to abandon that almost-full bottle of sunscreen on your way home, or having to buy a single-use plastic water bottle on the other side.
The liquids thing is all about luggage really. We all used to routinely check in our bags until airlines started charging us for that, when we all switched to small overhead locker wheelie cases, and put up with the extra queuing at security and liquid rulings. But a new trend is emerging, as passengers are fed up with paying more than the price of the fare for the privilege of bringing a small case. There remains an option to bring a small bag, one that fits underneath the seat in front, at no extra cost – and in fact, there’s more space under that seat than you might have thought. So
more than ever, travelling light is the order of the day. Budget airlines aren’t making it easy for us, though, with each airline publishing its own – di erent –definitions of acceptable dimensions.
British Airways remains generous on the baggage front. Small wheelie cases are accepted as standard and everyone is allowed a space in the overhead locker. Easyjet charges for cabin bags, but is relatively generous with its small bag definition. We have travelled on a four day city break in chilly weather with a clever Antler backpack (the Bamberg expandable, £160) that has compression straps and conforms to Easyjet’s dimensions as long as it’s not too full. Measure it before you go – the maximum size is 45x36x20cm. Ryanair, meanwhile, is stingier, stipulating only 40x25x20cm. That’s quite a challenge – but quite satisfying when you make it work. Beating the airlines at their own game is very much a thing in 2023.

We are leaders in educating girls and understanding their needs, inspiring and empowering confident young women.
Our leading day and boarding School in the heart of York o ers weekly and flexi boarding to Senior School girls age 11-18.
Come and visit us to discover how a Mount Senior School education empowers girls to know they can.
Ashville College has made a huge amount of progress in the last couple of years. We are delighted with how we have enhanced the educational experience of our pupils, promoted a culture of high expectations and, in a post-Covid landscape, created a strong sense of community. In 2022, we celebrated outstanding A-level examination results that were the school's best ever (52% of our grades were at A* or A) and led to us being featured in the Sunday Times’ top 10 list of independent secondary schools in the north for the first time in our history.
However, as I often remark to my colleagues, “standing still is not an option”. The educational landscape is changing very rapidly, and all schools need to keep their provision under review. We have spent the last academic year upholding our rigorous academic standards and supporting pupils ahead of their exams in the hope that we can continue the momentum we have built up over the last year.
One of our key commitments before the end of the summer term was to inform current parents about further improvements being introduced in the new year. Our parent ‘roadshows’ outlined a range of initiatives including unlocking the potential of digital learning through the introduction of iPads for pupils in Year 5 to Year 11; a
new Health and Wellbeing Centre to improve advice and support for pupils; new social and learning hubs to help pupils to spend their time positively at break and lunchtime; an interactive awareness programme for pupils and parents covering themes pertinent for children growing up in the 21st century; and plans to build on and harness our flagship Future Ready and Outdoor Education programmes, which o er greater awareness of the personal and professional skills needed for high quality employment and success in the 2030 workplace.
We look forward to what is promising to be an action-packed new academic year in September. It will bring with it some exciting new sta appointments, including Mr Philip Soutar, our new Head of Prep School, who joins us from Rosemead Prep School in Dulwich and is currently Chair of the Independent Schools Association, and Mr Paul Stansfield, our new Director of Sport, who was most recently Academy Manager at Harrogate Town AFC. They and other new colleagues bring a wealth of experience to our school as we begin our next chapter. Together, we are Ashville. If you are considering us for your child, do get in touch. Standing still is not an option.

Aysgarth pupils have gained a 100% pass rate in the latest LAMDA exams, with all 40 boys receiving merits or distinctions. Aysgarth prides itself on providing exceptional performing arts education, and these exceptional exam results are a testament to the dedication and hard work of their students and teachers. Among the highlights of this year’s LAMDA exams were the impressive scores achieved by Year 8 pupil, Alexander (scoring 92%) and Year 7 pupil, Xandie (scoring 89%), and Rafael, Sebby and Jago who secured the top ranks in their respective categories. Aysgarth is especially proud of Hugo for gaining a Distinction. Hugo is a blind talented actor and a delightful young man who provided a haunting representation of The Ghost of Christmas Past in a recent school performance. For his LAMDA exam, he chose a monologue as Cruella de Vil. Drama and LAMDA have played a significant role in developing Hugo’s self-confidence. Just 12 months ago he needed his VI teaching assistant on the stage with him in a school play, and now he commands the whole stage himself.

The Creative Curriculum is all about inquisitive thinking, discovering and creating with your mind. It is about encouraging the children to think outside the box, giving them opportunities to express themselves and their ideas in new ways.
“Young children are naturally curious, they learn by asking questions,” explains Rachel Capper, Head of The Mount Junior School in York. “We encourage their inquisitive minds, to allow them to ask their questions and not to be afraid to not know the answer or make mistakes. The Creative Curriculum gives our pupils the opportunity to explore their imagination, to experiment, take risks, and then to reflect and discover their own conclusions.” mountschoolyork.co.uk

We all choose places to live based on where we are in life, whether it’s that first student flat or a ‘forever’ family home. But as you get older or after your children have left home, you do start to think ‘do I need all of this space?’, or more importantly ‘can I still manage in my current home – is it right for what I need now?’ Are you paying to run a house that no longer fits your requirements?
Everyday UK headlines are also highlighting the ongoing challenges around the rising cost of living. People are really feeling the impact of increasing bills, especially for heating and electricity. Many older people have expressed real concern about how they might manage the ongoing costs associated with running their own home. Planning ahead, researching your options and making the move to a new home before any moment of crisis happens is empowering – it puts you in control of the choice and decision of where to enjoy living in later life. An increasing number of older people are embracing the choice to ‘right-size’ their home for their changing life circumstances, looking to retirement villages or apartments as a positive option.
Buying a retirement home means you can:
• Free up capital - allowing you to better enjoy your post-working years;
• Stay on the property ladder by still owning your own home – one that fits your needs now;
• Benefit from ‘no-worries’ maintenance of your property or garden;
• Feel secure;
• Meet new friends and enjoy companionship from neighbours at a similar life stage to yourself;
• Stay together as a couple if that is your requirement.
Another vital benefit is the added package of care and support, which is sometimes available at these locations. Westward Care is one such local care provider. They o er a full package of care and support at both of their retirement locations in Headingley and Roundhay. You can purchase your own home and utilise the 24/7 care and support on-site if or when you need it. With fully trained and qualified sta they are there to help – but if you don’t need it you don’t pay for it. Apartment owners say the reassurance this brings is priceless.
You have your own front door, you live independently, all have kitchen facilities so you can continue to cook for yourself (or dine in the on-site restaurant if you prefer). All the apartments are fully accessible and designed to make life easier in later life – large wet rooms, lifts to all floors, and everything on one level with no stairs to climb in the apartments.
You’ll no longer have to worry about things such as the tiles falling o the roof. It is a ‘no worries’ package. They look after the heating system, the electrical system, as well as carrying out maintenance, window cleaning, and even do the gardening.
As Westward Care’s Managing Director Peter Hodkinson points out: “My view is that later life is a time to broaden your horizons, not limit them. This has very much been the case for many of our apartment owners that live in the luxury apartments at our Headingley Hall and Southlands Retirement Apartments locations. They have made an active choice to buy an apartment in order to life their lives to the full – whether that means spending some of their equity on holidays or days out, or enjoying their luxury home with the peace of mind that care and support is on hand 24/7 if, or when, they might need it.”
Margaret, an apartment owner at Southlands Retirement Apartments, o ers a first-hand view of moving to a Westward Care home. “I moved here to be nearer to
my son, wife and grandson. I am thrilled with the outcome. Being at Southlands allows me to be as independent as possible with help, care and food available if I need it. The sta really do care and are excellent. The residents have welcomed me warmly, and very quickly, I felt like one of this happy family. Situated on the edge of the park, close to the big clock and just a walk or bus ride to Street Lane are such a bonus.”
No utility bills for 12 months

Don’t forget to quote ‘ABSOLUTELY YORKSHIRE’ when you enquire to benefit from this offer if you decide to make the move.
Aviewpoint has opened at Malham Cove for people to watch the world’s fastest animal, the peregrine falcon, up close. The opening marks the return of the Malham Peregrine Project, a longrunning partnership between the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and the RSPB, which was paused during Covid lockdowns.
The free public viewpoint is at the base of the Cove. Volunteers will be on hand to show people the birds through telescopes from 10.30am-4.30pm on 21–22 July.
The Member Champion for the Natural Environment at the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, Mark Corner, says: “The Yorkshire Dales National Park is a great place to see wildlife and Malham Cove is perhaps the best spot to see peregrine falcons. This is the 30th year that they’ve been nesting here. Following a pause in the Malham Peregrine Project during the Covid years, our sta and volunteers are very much looking forward to helping people once again witness the wonderful spectacle of falcons raising their family on the Cove face.”
Malham Cove is one of the most successful peregrine nest sites in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with at least 73 young raised since a pair first nested in 1993.
Peregrine numbers crashed in the 1960s owing to the impact of pesticides and they have historically been persecuted by people. Recent decades have seen a recovery. In the UK there are about 1,750 pairs, a figure based on the last population estimate undertaken in 2014. In the past decade there have been between five and seven traditional nest sites that have been occupied in the Yorkshire Dales National Park; there may be more, but not all sites are checked each year.
Peregrines typically pair for several years and may live up to 10 years old; the oldest known wild peregrine was 17 years.
Both adult birds tend the young, which take their first flight after five or six weeks. Peregrines feed on medium sized birds, predominantly pigeons, which they catch in high-speed aerial stoops – although more often than not they fail to make a kill. When they go into their aerial stoop, peregrines have been recorded reaching speeds over 200 miles an hour, making them the fastest animal on the planet.
The peregrine is the largest British breeding falcon. It is 38-48 cm long, and its wingspan is 95-110 cm. The female is considerably larger than the male. The upper parts are dark blue-grey, and the under parts are pale with fine, dark bars. The head has a black ‘hood’ with black moustache-like markings on the face. Juvenile birds are browner and heavily streaked below.
