Erró − The Power of Images

Through 3/9/2023 www.aros.dk

Housing or dwelling is a core human need. The lack of affordable living spaces, especially in metropolitan areas, is currently among the most pressing problems of our time. In addition, there are the challenges of climate change, a new balancing of different forms of mobility, infrastructures, questions related to social coexistence and society. Numerous new building concepts are currently being developed, especially in the feld of housing construction, whose strategies can be groundbreaking not only not only for the function of dwelling, but also for the development of cities and regions, as well as for the building industry itself. The exhibition shows selected examples of contemporary architecture that demonstrate viable paths for sustainable building.

The exhibition shows the power of the collage technique in a variety of works, from small paper cut-outs to large-scale paintings. Erró’s works explore a new media-based reality where we are constantly exposed to a fux of images varying from the commercial to the political, effecting our idea of reality, thus becoming as fragmented as the collages of the artist himself. Through his works, he establishes links between historical events, artistic genres, and methods, and they form a powerful visual narrative that highlights the digital and global developments that have taken place in the artist’s 90 years of life.

Based on an in-depth exploration of the very insular milieu of the Carmignac Foundation in Porquerolles, the exhibition entitled L’üle intĂ©rieur devised by Jean-Marie Gallais looks at a key driving force behind creativity that is as powerful as it is common: drawing away from reality to reveal interiority. More than 80 works by some 50 artists including Francis Clement, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Darren Almond, on loan from public and private collections, the Carmignac collection and even borrowed from production ranges, draw the dotted contours of an interior realm, whose gaps are flled by visitors, each in his or her own way.

F rench photographer Vasantha Yogananthan is the 2019 laureate of “Immersion”, a French-American Photography Commission. Mentored by Agnùs Sire, he chose to undertake his residency in the southern US state of Louisiana. Yogananthan spent time with city children in New Orleans over the course of a long, hot summer, capturing their sense of the ephemeral, ever-changing world around them. “Mystery Street” is the title of the resulting series, a solo exhibition and a monograph, co-published with Chose Commune. The project marks a return to documentary photography (chiefy of portraits), but freed from the genre’s established codes and traditions. “Mystery Street” is both a conversation with the real world, and an escape that opens up multiple narrative possibilities, both a commentary on human behaviour, and a transfguration of everyday existence.
