Meet Trey Boyer

On October 20, TGO resident Trey Boyer will be speaking at the Manor, presenting a life-changing message that will help you discover how to live your best life. Trey is a nationally known keynote speaker who will have you on the edge of your seat, excited to hear what he has to say next. Knowing his event is only a couple weeks away, we decided to spend some time with Trey to find out more about his Life-Fulfillment seminar, his personal background that guided him to where he is today and his plans for the future. See page 30 for the complete story.

TGO Has a Great Volunteer Army!

Our TGO community is great when it comes to residents who like to volunteer. Last Friday, several of our community members stepped up to help distribute 1,175 fingerling catfish throughout our 32 ponds. These same volunteers can be seen on the nature trails cleaning up debris, weed wacking around Lake Judy, or picking up trash along the roads and areas of TGO. This park has a great staff that takes care of lawns, irrigation and any emergency situations, but we are always in need of more voulnteers. If you have the time, don’t hesitate to raise your hand.

Happy Fall Everyone! By the time this letter is published, I expect that Hurricane Ian will have passed our area of Central Florida without major incident or damage. As I write this letter, on Tuesday, September 27, CSA is preparing our community for tropical storm force winds and rain. The National Weather forecast doesn’t predict Brevard County will take a direct hit with hurricane-level winds in this area. Perhaps when Ian passes by Florida, it will usher in some cooler, drier weather? I hope so!

Last Friday our CSA employees enjoyed a quarterly breakfast together, served to us by our CSA Board members. This breakfast is a fun way to say “Thank You” for the hard work, talents, and energy it took our teams to operate TGO during the summer heat. I talked to our employees about the changing season, and how fall brings back our seasonal residents and a sharp increase in activity throughout the community. Soon the weather will cool, the grass will go dormant, the rain will begin to subside, and these welcomed changes in the weather gives our CSA teams an opportunity to focus on the detail work to impress our owners and make TGO shine. The employee breakfast allowed us to recognize two outstanding employees in front of the Board and their peers, for two different reasons. Courtesy Patrol Officer Rick Reinish received a Good Samaritan Award. Several weeks ago, there was a traffic accident on Plantation involving a man on a motorized scooter and a vehicle. Rick was one of the first people on the scene, and without hesitation, he and homeowner Debbie Bissonette offered first aid to the injured accident victim. Rick administered CPR using the AED found in the trunk of his Courtesy Patrol vehicle. Rick’s courage and willingness to serve was impressive. He didn’t stop administering CPR until the EMTs arrived. We are proud of Rick’s efforts to help this victim.

The employee breakfast also allowed us to recognize an Employee of the Quarter. This quarter’s award winner was Golf Superintendent Shane Willey. As you know, our golf course was recently awarded Best of the Best on the Space Coast. Being the “Best” among 27 golf courses in Brevard County requires great leadership. Shane has worked tirelessly, has demonstrated a tremendous talent for the job, and has always put in the extra hours needed to earn an award such as this. Shane has always been there for his team, and he even shares his turf expertise with our CSA crews when they are having challenges throughout TGO. He is a team player and excellent leader, and he deserves this recognition.

Next week, Tuesday – Wednesday, October 4-5, TruGreen returns to our community for a comprehensive treatment of your lawns. Please be sure to prepare your yard for this liquid treatment by removing any obstacles. Please stay off the lawn until this treatment has dried. Also next week, the Blue Heron Restaurant will close for just two hours, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm on Wednesday, October 5, and again for two hours, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm on Tuesday, October 12, to allow us to offer service training to the Blue Heron staff in advance of an expected busy season. Please pardon the inconvenience.

Finally, next week we welcome the Titusville Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual golf tournament on Friday morning, October 7 beginning at 8:30 am. This tournament has historically been held at other area golf courses and restaurants, but for two years in a row now, the Chamber has decided to host it here at TGO. We can expect as many as 150 players, sponsors and staff to participate and join us for lunch afterwards. I am sure we will put on a great show for our local businesses.

A Great Cause

A Great Tournament

One of our more important golf tournaments held at our TGO Golf Course happens this October for Breast Cancer Awareness month. This is the seventh year for this tournament which was started by TGO/ LGA with Susan Jensen as the chairperson - and this is the sixth year this tournament has joined forces with the Jess Parrish Medical Center Foundation.

Each year Parrish enters a couple of their own teams to play and they set up a tent with their staff, handing out brochures and providing information on Breast Cancer and the importance of early detection.

All the money raised stays in Brevard County and goes to providing resources to the Parrish Medical Center’s Cancer Care Boutique. The boutique provides necessary resources (available at no cost to patients) to assist with the physical and emotional well-being of cancer patients in North Brevard and throughout the county. The Boutique provides wigs, turbans, hats, camisoles, bras and prostheses. The Boutique is available to patients with all types of cancer. The money also provides life-saving mammograms to those under-insured and uninsured. Funds also go to the Parrish Healthcare Cancer and Survivor Support Group. They provide counseling to anyone going through cancer or to the families of patients. Over the past six years we (the TGO/LGA) have made a considerable donation to Parrish and have been recognized by them as Sapphire level donors on their recognition wall.

This year the LGA is hosting a sit-down lunchen inside the Manor serving pulled pork - which is included in the price of the tournament. The sign-up is in the golf shop. TGO Golf Course has 120 spots available this year and we usually have a waiting list. There will be mimosas and sponsored holes. Prizes will be given away. Many of the sponsors provide gift certificates for their services.

Bob Evans, a TGO resident, makes fabulous carryall bags, and he will donate four of them. They will be filled with fun items. These will be raffled off during lunch. Raffle tickets will be available three for $10. We will also have 50/50 tickets available - so there are several opportunities for participants to win some prizes.

Owners are encouraged to attend all the Board of Director meetings. Green speaker cards are available if an owner wishes to address the board for three minutes about any issue. An informational packet with the meeting agenda is given to each household that attends. Prior to the meeting, the agenda is posted on official bulletin boards and shown on our TV Community Channel 732. The actual meeting is televised LIVE on this same channel.

CSA Board of Directors meetings are held on the third Wednesday from October through May. Planning meetings to set the agenda for the Board of Directors meetings are scheduled October to May on the second Wednesday of the month in the Plantation Manor at 10:00 am. They are open to attend for any TGO owner.

CSA DUES PAYMENT

The Third Quarter Maintenance Assessment for 2022 will be due October 1. Please drop off your payment of $900 at the CSA Office or mail it to: The Great Outdoors at 100-D Plantation Drive, Titusville, FL 32780. You can also fill out a form to have your payment drawn directly from your bank account. The payment must be received by 5:00 pm on October 21, 2022 or there will be a $25 late fee.

District Meetings

There are ten CSA voting districts at The Great Outdoors. They are non-geographical, but are determined by the last digit in each property’s street address. The District Meetings are held monthly from October through May. Various districts join together to hold combined monthly meetings. There are two meetings per month with five districts in each one. Please note the upcoming meeting schedule if you want to attend your district meeting.

Architectural Review Committee

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the next ARC Meetings will be held on the following Wednesday dates at 10:00 am on the Plantation Manor Porch: October 12, November 2, November 23 and December 14.

The Architectural Review Committee meets for planning purposes on the Plantation Manor Porch at 10:00 am on the Monday before an ARC meeting.

All changes to your property that are visible on the outside require advance approval from the Architectural Review Committee. Application forms and ARC Guidelines may be obtained from the Community Services Association office or printed from The Great Outdoors Community Services Association website at www.tgocsa. org. All completed ARC forms must be submitted to the CSA office by Noon on the Wednesday before the next Wednesday meeting. Results will be available to pick up after the ARC meeting or from the CSA Office. Be sure ALL necessary paperwork is included with your ARC application. No approval will be given without having all the required data available at the ARC Meeting for review.

TGO property owners are encouraged to suggest modifications to the ARC Guidelines, which will be discussed during an annual review. Please submit them to the ARC Secretary, in writing, no later in the year than October 1.

Newcomers Orientation

The first Newcomer Orientation Meeting for this season will be held in the Manor on Monday, November 14, 2022 from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm. Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US. Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

Opening on the Finance Committee

There is an opening for owners who wish to serve on the Finance Committee. An application needs to be completed to apply for committees. Beginning with the first meeting in October, we will meet at the CSA Pavilion on the third (3rd) Tuesday of each month at 10:00 am. Automated Visitor Call-In - 321-383-8802

The automated system offers two methods to provide access for a visitor. Call no more than 24 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. Send an email to: guest@tgocsa.org, no more than 48 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. The phone number and email address you use must already be registered with the CSA Office for the access request to be accepted. This system cannot confirm that your request was received or respond to any additional messages.

Service and Set-Up Calls - 833-697-7328

The CSA has a contract with Spectrum that includes Spectrum TV Select and Spectrum Internet services. If you are experiencing problems with their service or need to set up a new service, call the number above. Tell them your community at The Great Outdoors has a bulk agreement known as the Bronze Package.

TGO Community Channel 732

Our television channel for Community Services Association and other information about The Great Outdoors can be viewed using a digital TV tuned to Channel 732 on the Spectrum Cable TV system. The TV must be equipped with a Spectrum TV cable box or digital adapter.

If you have questions about lawn spraying, getting sprinklers adjusted, or any other services provided by the Community Services Association, residents should contact the CSA Office by email at service@ tgocsa.org or call 321-268-9767 to mention your concerns.

Vehicle Barcodes

If your vehicle needs a barcode installed, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767 to schedule a REQUIRED appointment. They install them everyday, but will not do “walk-in” applications. If you need a barcode installed on your Recreational Vehicle, they’ll install RV barcodes on Fridays ONLY, and they want to visit your home or RV site to hopefully complete that barcode installation without moving your RV.

TruGreen regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects. These applications are scheduled in 2022 as follows: October 4 & 5, and November 29 & 30

TruGreen is also offering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the TruGreen list.

They will make additional visits on the following 2022 dates: October 20, November 10, and December 15.

TruGreen advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA.

From Monday through Saturday, contractors must leave TGO by 6:00 pm from October 1 to April 30 and by 7:00 pm from May 1 to September 30.

Please call the CSA Office at 321-2689767 during the regular weekday office hours to request any exceptions to these contractor work restrictions.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

Employee of the Quarter - Shane Willey

There are 27 golf courses in Brevard County, and our own Great Outdoors Golf Club was just voted BEST OF THE BEST on the Space Coast, recognized by Florida Today. This award was a real honor as there are some really well-known golf courses in Brevard County, especially south of here. This award didn’t just happen; it’s because of the hard work, talent, and dedication shown by our entire golf team and support of the Blue Heron and the CSA teams. To receive recognition like this, you must have great leadership in place. You need someone who works tirelessly, has a tremendous talent for the job, puts in the extra hours, and leads by example. This person must also be intuitive and skilled in seeing minor problems before they become big and must be willing to share knowledge with his team. In the past six years, our course has gone from perhaps one of the worst courses in Brevard County to now the Best on the Space Coast. The secret to an award-winning golf course is to find and hire the right people, give them support, ask how you can help, and watch them work. Shane Willey is not one to brag, he’s not big on recognition and is sometimes a man of few words, but he is undoubtedly the best, most talented, hardest-working golf superintendent in Brevard County. He has an impressive work ethic on and off the course, and he’s always willing to consult and help the CSA in other areas of our community, such as Doggy World, when those areas need extra help with turf issues. Shane, we are happy to award you with Employee of the Quarter – Congratulations!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc. that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules:

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have.

• Tie bags together if they are all light in weight.

• Place trash within 1 foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!

The Hooray for Hollywood night at the Blue Heron brought out some unique characters. Left to Right: Marlene Zawadsky made an excellent 1920s Flapper Girl. Marilyn MonMoe and Tuco Witschi were looking for a street grate. Larry and Lynne Murkerson were styling at the BH.

We had a lot of volunteers show up for our recent “stocking of the ponds.” 1,175 fingerling catfish were distributed throughout our 32 ponds. Ron and Dori Peoples stepped up to ramrod the project and help out John Roberts. See more photos on page 70.

Pet Corner

A Good Samaritan Award was given to Rick Reinish from Courtesy Patrol. He was one of the first people on the scene of a bad accident on Plantation involving a man on a motorized scooter and a vehicle. Without hesitation, Rick began first aid on the accident victim. He administered CPR using the AED from the trunk of his Courtesy Patrol car until the EMS vehicles arrived.

While working on the nature trail with Firewise one of our team found a scarlet kingsnake on a small palm tree we were working on. When it fell out of the tree into a bed of large ants I picked it up and after sharing it with the crew released it on another cabbage palm. Betty Salter

Getting to Know Trey Boyer

You might have noticed Trey’s advertisement in the last issue of The Happenings where his Life-Fulfillment seminar will be held at the Plantation Manor on Thursday, October 20.

Trey Boyer is no stranger to a lot of TGO residents, some of whom have relied on his fitness and training program to produce results in both their health and self-confidence.

After learning about Trey’s long list of accomplishments, we thought our readers might enjoy taking a closer look at his background and career, and what he has planned for his October 20 program.

Trey grew up in Oklahoma and became a teenage bodybuilding sensation at the age of 17 when he won numerous state titles and was named Teen Athlete of the Year.

Upon graduating from high school, Trey set his sights on furthering his education and was accepted at the University of Oklahoma. However, just weeks before classes began, his parents chose to relocate to Virginia where they were originally from. Trey said, “That was one of those points in life where you really feel torn because you are ready to take on the world, but you also have this incredible closeness to your family.” As difficult as the decision was, Trey’s family supported it and he began his fall studies at Oklahoma.

“I knew that I wanted to chart my own path in life and everything I did would serve a purpose.”

In addition to having a full course load, Trey was also pursuing his bodybuilding career. It just so happens that Virginia, where his parents were, is one of the top-tier bodybuilding states in the nation and Trey set his sights on quite a lofty goal. “I wanted to become the youngest to ever win the title of Mr. Virginia and that became my driving force.”

In addition to his disciplined lifestyle as an athlete, Trey also pursued an aggressive workload in his college studies. “I knew that I wanted to chart my own path in life and everything I did would serve a purpose.” There was a great deal of foresight in that the early goals Trey set for himself have nearly all

come to fruition. He knew he wanted to be an entrepreneur, an author, and he wanted to be a keynote speaker who would one day inspire countless others to reach the highest quality of life for themselves. As a result of those goals, Trey focused his efforts in studying Organizational Communication and Journalism, Business Management, and Health and Sports Science.

As fate would have it, Trey captured the title of Mr. Virginia and also graduated from the University of Oklahoma in just four years. He then moved west where he began his first job out of college in Venice Beach, California, at the mecca of body building, Gold’s Gym. They had over 7,000 members and Trey was hired to help run the nutrition center there, which was thriving. He began to notice there was no one instructing others on how to exercise. People would just come to the gym and do whatever they knew to do. There was nobody working with them on how to lose 10-20 pounds, or inches in their waist. That’s when Trey said a light bulb went off and he started teaching people how to train.

Trey had no intention of staying in California and was ready to move back to Oklahoma where he took his knowledge and experience in personal training and launched his entrepreneurial career by opening up a state-of-the-art fitness center. He would pioneer a new concept in fitness training and offered individualized holistic health care programs. In the early 1990’s, personal training was not even a term. Today, it is a commonly used throughout the country in almost every gym and fitness center.

Trey’s other business ventures included designing a complete catalog of nutritional supplements, owning and operating a nutrition center, and he wrote his first of several books entitled, “What Are You Waiting For?” During the time that Trey was operating several businesses, he

was routinely asked to speak at various companies and events to share his success philosophy. Those speak ing engagements included corporations such as Bank of America, Re/Max Realty, Chesapeake Energy, Walt Disney World, Herbal Life, plus civic organizations and universities. The feedback was incredibly positive, and Trey began to give serious consideration to entering the arena of public speaking on a full-time basis.

Trey eventually sold his companies in Oklahoma and relocated to Florida and has been a full -time resident of TGO for seven years. He arrived here in part because he wanted to be closer to his family, who reside in the park, and to also enjoy the beautiful weather that Florida offers. “It was al ways my dream to move and retire in Florida, I just never thought it would be at this young age.”

Since arriving in Florida, Trey has continued teaching his holistic health care programs for numerous clients, several of whom are residents here in TGO.

Since being a TGO resident, Trey has also written two more self-empowerment books containing principles and strategies that he includes in his holistic health care pro grams, as well as his speaking engagements. Trey states, “I am a strong advocate for strengthening the mind as it empowers the body and the two are inherently connected.”

In his book, Unlock Your Full Potential, Trey explains that; “there are two opposing forces, commonly referred to as ‘yin’ and ‘yang’ which require balance between the mental and physical self.” In order to attain this balance, Trey teach es the importance of harnessing the power of your mind. One aspect of taking control of your mind is to choose your words carefully. There are over half a million words in the English language and the average person only uses one-half of one percent of the words available to them! Of those, approximately 1000 words can describe positive emotion while over 3000 describe negative emotions! Therefore,

you need to be cognizant of the words you choose as they ultimately determine your outlook on life.

Climate Awareness and Protecting Your Home by Ed Brown

If you were aware of the TV news these past several months, then you know that many things have changed. One of those changes was the landscape: California, Oregon, Wash ington and Idaho. Wildfires have been ravaging those states for months. Three million acres in California were turned to gray ash. In parts of the other three states, two million acres became a burned out wasteland. In California 700 structures were destroyed, hun dreds of vehicles were burned, residents of dozens of communities were burned, livestock and pets were destroyed, 37 firefighters were killed and the carnage continues. As long as the fuel (fire load) is great, humidity is low and the strong, hard, dry Santa Ana winds blow through the canyons, the fires will continue to feed. Most are not anywhere near “under control.” The smoke in those states represents a hazmat situation drifting across the country and even as far away as Europe. Environmental destruction (floods and landslides) and health concerns resulting from prolonged smoke inhalation will last a lifetime! My, aren’t you glad you have a place of refuge here in TGO, south of those nasty, smoke-burdened continental winds and free of wildfires?... What? Well almost!

The Jet Stream usually doesn’t swing far enough south to pick up West Coast smoke but, as you know, we do have wildfires. Our wildfires are not as intense as those burning out West. We don’t have ridge lines, Santa Ana winds, or as much ground fuel and dry conditions as California wildfires. During dry winter months with strong seasonal winds it is possible for our river plains to get ignited and take off into the upland habitat (pines, hardwoods and homes) which is TGO. The damage might not be in the billions of dollars but what is the value, to you, of your Park Home, Motor Home or 5th Wheel? How can you protect your home? If you don’t know, read about “How To” in a future issue of The Happenings.

In the meantime, you can jump-start the home protection process if you remember these three words: LEAN, CLEAN, AND GREEN.

LEAN refers to the thickness of the vegetation outside your home. Thirty feet is the minimum distance from the outside walls to “the jungle.” The idea is to discourage fire from spreading to your living spaces.

CLEAN is a reminder to keep this same area clear of vegetative waste (fallen leaves, dead palm fronds, pine cones, pine needles; stuff that can be ignited by fire embers blowing in a fire-generated wind!) It includes your roof and gutters!

GREEN is the color of your lawn if it’s hydrated. If it is brown or tan, it will burn (right up to the house). Get the picture? You may have a sprinkler problem or an insect problem. Either way, the CSA office can help you to hydrate your lawn.

June and Donald moved to TGO over three years ago. Every resident of TGO has a life story that would make a perfect autobiography, a perfect photo story for the coffee table, or a legacy movie to pass down to the kids.

But, June and Donald’s story of life together has overwhelmed me. Every conversation I have with them turns up new episodes - as if I was reading an award-winning novel. I just found out their lust for life and interesting careers has been passed down to their children. For example, one of their daughters is a senior pilot for Alaska Airlines.

Meet June and Donald Stadnik

June and Donald had a farm in Washington state with over 1,500 bee hives that they hauled up and down the West coast, following the blossoms for pollination and honey production. They were performers at county fairs where Donald allowed June to pour handfuls of bees on his head, neck, and face so that he looked like he had a lumberjack’s beard of bees.

They haul their airstream trailer throughout the United States. Not a couple to sit around the campfire drinking and gossiping, they take their camera and powerful telescopes to the darkest spot in the campground and photograph nebula, planets, moon craters, and more.

They have a parrot that talked to me - telling me it wanted a beer. Then it made glugging sounds and let out a burp. Oh, did I mention that June just retired as CPA, controller, and IT from an international produce distribution business?

It is fun to talk with them because they always make sure to tell you the letter “I” does not fit their vocabulary. Everything they have done is “we.”

I first met them when I went to ask June a few questions in preparation for this article. June is a new photo club member. Early in our discussion June unexpectedly turned the table on me - she soon was the one asking questions. But as someone once said, “The best things come from the unexpected.” Read on!

June said, “Yes, I go to the Photo Club meetings but I want to learn more. Why are there not more learning sessions? How about helping us with our photography questions all year long? How do I get a mentor to help me plan a photo shoot, set the controls on my camera, things like that. With so much talent around, could you help me find a mentor?”

Yes, I was surprised. June had very quickly turned the tables on me. I did not have answers for her questions. So, I struggled to bring our interview to a quick end, and finally, politely said, “Let me work on your questions.” I got out of the door as fast as I could.

After that interview, I had a long talk with Dave Spahn, president of the Photo Club. Out of our discussion came this idea. Let us put together a “Mentor Pool” - a group of “experienced AND enthusiastic” photographers who can help when called upon.

Next we said we would need a situation or two to test the idea of this Mentor Pool. Well, I just happened to have one situation right in my own back pocket. Last week, the new CSA office turned to me to get four high quality pho tos of TGO nature for their walls.

Coming up with the idea and finding a test case were easy, but we needed some experienced photographers who would agree to join the initial Mentor Pool. After many calls I found five names to start a Mentor Pool: Dave Spahn, Robin Francis, Doug Jensen, Gregory Danial, and myself would all be willing to contribute time when called upon.

Some have full-time businesses and we are an RV community where RVers travel a lot. Therefore, we need an administrator to line up available Mentors and their specific skill to the kind of help being ask for.

“Yes, I go to the Photo Club meetings but I want to learn more. Why are there not more learning sessions?

Back to June I went. I explained I had spoken with five experienced photographers who agreed to put their names into a Mentor Pool.

I told her I would like for her to meet with Carmella Galley of CSA and select two of her photos to help fill the empty frames she wants to hang in the office.

Then, I told her to organize a shoot of four new pho tos for the CSA walls and use the Mentor Pool to advise her on how to make those photos stand out - be merit photos. I asked her to help me and Dave Spahn get an announcement out inviting club members to participate with her. Then I told her she could set up a Mentor-led practice session with everyone. Carmella will help us get the word out on the various CSA Facebook groups as well. These announcements mean that anyone in TGO is invited to participate.

I told her that, as administrator, she can work with Nancy Presant to set up photo shoots/events/trips,

throughout the year, that will provide the opportunity for Mentor-led learning and practice experiences.

“So, June, what do you think of that?” I leaned back in my chair and shut my mouth.

She sat there with mouth open and tried to find a quick exit from her own home. Seeing no exit, she said, “What a great idea - let’s make it work. New photographers are going to love it!” Wow, I think I just turned the table back to June.

In short, this Mentor Pool idea wants to help everyone in TGO learn from the talent our experienced photogra phers have. We hope our Mentor Pool idea works out and we hope it encourages everyone to enjoy photography more.

A new organization is being formed to connect and support widows who live in TGO. We want to introduce you to other women who can be supportive of each other through the often difficult time of finding a new way of life without your other half. Whether young or old, we can help connect you with someone who has traveled the same path. A friendly ear, a smiling face, or even just someone who will cry with you. No judgement, no pressure, you chose what you want to do or say knowing our group understands your situation.

This will be a group to do things together where you don’t feel like a fifth wheel. Not everyone will want to do everything, but hopefully each person will be able to find things to do and enjoy with others, to stay connected and continue to live and enjoy this wonderful life here in TGO.

We are starting to enter our busy season here at TGO. Because of this EVERYONE needs to be more conscious of their time spent on our roadways. The roads are narrow and are shared by many modes of transportation and accidents can happen; yes they do occur even though they shouldn’t! If everyone abides by the road signs that are abundantly here, there is no reason why we should have any accidents!

Also please pull over for emergency vehicles, they may be here to save a life!!

CardinalHave you ever heard this saying, “When cardinals appear a lost loved one is near”? Many cultures value the cardinal as an important creature bringing good fortune, news or love from a lost loved one. It is always a positive sign.

The root of cardinal is Latin for important. So why were they considered important…these seed, insect and fruit eat ers? They are beautiful birds, but what do they do?

Males often crash into windows or mirrors trying to vanquish a non-existent foe. They are territorial and protec tive of their mates and young.

Once the male establishes his territory the female will sing. Male and female will perch side by side, necks stretched, crests up and sway side to side while singing softly.

Mourning Dove

Why do we associate doves with love, hope, peace, mater nity, and purity? Even as a child I loved hearing them in the morning. I thought their name was morning dove. Their call is considered mournful and, in some cultures, they are as sociated with death and rebirth. They are always a symbol of something positive and uplifting.

Being altricial they hatch naked, blind and helpless. The male brings most of the food to the chicks and may also feed his mate who shares it with her helpless chicks. The male cares for the first brood while the female incubates the second clutch.

The feeding instinct of parental birds is very strong, drawn by calls and gaping beaks. Should they lose their brood, they may begin to feed another brood of the same species. One cardinal was even observed to adopt a school of gaping goldfish at a pond where the fish were accus tomed to being fed by humans.

What a lovely scene! Perhaps this gentle scene inspires in us hope, love, or fond memories of ones we’ve lost.

Let’s look at their behaviors…These birds are monog amous. The male courts the female by performing a gliding, spiraling aerial display over her, then on the ground he struts before her, feathers fluffed and nods his head. He brings her the materials for the nest and she builds it. He may defend his territory by bowing repeatedly then lift his head and coo.

They build their nest in a protected area like in a cactus that will deter predators or perhaps in a potted plant where you provide the protection. The male sits on the nest during the day and the female at night. They both feed the young crop milk the first several days. The male continues four to six days longer than the female. Seeds are introduced after three days of crop milk.

One of the most hunted game birds, their life span is 1.5 years though individuals have been known to live more than 20 years. To me this sweet bird represents family.
