The Great Outdoors Golf Course Improvements on Schedule for 2024 The Great Outdoors is set to embark on a memorable journey. The planned renovation of the golf facility and irrigation system is both ambitious and exciting. While the project start date is still a long way off, April 2024, the planning process has already begun. It started with the naming of a course architect and, after a diligent research process, we selected Sanford Golf Design. We are working with David Ferris of the Sanford firm, who has created a master plan for us. This plan includes the replacement of the irrigation system, green restructuring, tee and fairway re-shaping and grassing, along with a new look for the practice facility. As we said, it’s an ambitious plan and we are determined to do all that we can to accomplish the planned improvements. We have received lots of questions about this project and have attempted to address some of these questions in this article regarding details of the renovation work. We still have a ways to go until the hands-on phase begins, but rest assured, your TGO team will be working diligently to bring this project to fruition. After all, this is an important investment for The Great Outdoors owners. Continued on page 36

Spending Time with Your Furry Friends Doggy World is one of the most popular places in TGO, especially if you have four legs. Drive down the east side of Plantation Drive and you’ll easily spot the local hangout for “man’s best friend” along with their owners enjoying the equivilent of a Happy Hour party. There are no shortages of “You’re-agood boy” or slobbery kisses. For dogs... it’s like Disney World! Continued on page 48

Dennis Grondin and Faith are regular afternoon visitors to Doggy World.

Shane Willey and Chuck Kandt will oversee the golf course renovation.

Manager’s Corner February 18, 2022 Dear TGO Community, If you’re reading this letter then I’m sure you’ve noticed the new look of The Happenings. Our new editors, Tim and Cindy, have worked hard in this first issue to create more content featuring activities and people inside TGO. There is also a new online version of The Happenings that reads like a magazine and is in full color. This version is easily read on your computer, phone or tablet. You can access it by scanning the QR code below with your phone camera. We look forward to hearing your feedback about this new direction and hope you enjoy the new look. My deadline to submit this Manager’s Corner letter to our editors is the Tuesday prior to the Friday publishing date. As I write this article, final preparations are underway for tomorrow’s Annual CSA Owners’ Meeting and February Board Meeting, Wednesday, February 16. The annual meeting allows us to recognize and thank outgoing board member Ruth Falusi. This meeting also allows us to surprise and congratulate Lynn Jacobs for 19 years of outstanding service to TGO as our CSA Assistant Manager. Lynn is most-deserving of special TGO recognition as she has been the mainstay of our CSA operation for almost two decades. She has provided leadership and council to many different board members and managers over these 19 years. It’s tough to imagine the CSA operating without Lynn, but she has certainly deserved this time to retire to pursue travel and other interests. Her last day in the office is Friday, February 25. Just following the Annual Meeting, our Board of Directors will meet to discuss several motions including the approval of the 2022 budget. Budget approval will allow me and the CSA staff to roll up our sleeves and get to work on several 2022 improvement projects. Some of the larger projects include a new main irrigation pump, improvements to the Manor pool and spa surface, renovation of the 199 Plantation bath house, and renovations of our CSA office space. We also continue to aggressively save money into reserves as we plan for a major golf course renovation of irrigation and greens now scheduled for 2024. I will be reporting on these and many other improvements in this bi-monthly letter throughout the year. This is the third year now that the Southern Classics Car Club will parade antique cars through TGO. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, March 12, beginning at approximately 11 am. This parade will be led by our Courtesy Patrol Team and will follow the same route as our annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade. I wish to recognize homeowner Eddie Shae for bringing this popular parade back to TGO for the 3rd annual year. This year, following the parade, the classic cars and their owners will gather in our large Manor parking lot so that you can take a closer look at the cars and talk-shop with the owners. Jerry the ice cream man will have his ice cream truck here during the car show. Put out your lawn chair and enjoy this special event. Our grass within TGO is now dormant and many sections have turned brown or a lighter shade of green. The grass is not dead or diseased, this discoloration is absolutely normal, especially after experiencing freezing conditions that arrived in late January. Please expect slow or no growth of your grass until the early spring when the weather warms up into the 80s again on a regular basis. We are running our irrigation system as scheduled. In future issues of The Happenings, I’ll write more about our irrigation system and how often we water your lawns. Sincerely, Billy Specht CSA Manager

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings. The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules: • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have. • Tie bags together if they are all light in weight. • Place trash within 1 foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach. • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park. • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!

1) A new space art display is being hung on the walls of the Heron’s Nest private dining room at Blue Heron. More information about this display will be shared in the next issue of The Happenings. 2) Have you noticed the new solar-powered electronic speed sign, located on Plantation Drive just south of Addison Canal? This sign will remind you of our speed limit, which remains 15mph in this residential area where many people living on Panacea Way and Wayfarer Place are walking, riding bikes and operating their golf carts. 3) Lawn crew members Brandon Struble, Michael Kelly and Anthony Walton are cleaning up the woodlines by trimming vegetation behind homeowners property on the 100 block of Plantation. 4) Buildings team members John Hardy and Guy Sampson are putting the final bookshelves in place to hold the romance and western novels. I hope you’ve been able to visit and see all the recent improvements made to this amenity.

The Great Outdoors Community Church Church and Men’s Breakfast Group

WE’RE BACK! Men, mark your calendars with the dates for the upcoming 2022 Men’s Breakfasts. The dates are: February 19 • March 19 • April 16 We will be offering a tasty breakfast of eggs, potatoes, meat, pancakes or biscuits and gravy, fruit, orange juice and coffee or tea, catered by Kelly’s Cuisine, all for only $10.00 each. We eat at 8:00 am followed by some informative speakers who will educate us and then offer some great opportunities to ask questions. Our February speaker will be Jeannine M. Stein, MD, FACMS, a well-known skin cancer surgeon. Several of us here in TGO have already needed her services. She should be able to give us good information as to what to look for and how to prevent our needing her. Then in March, we have the return of our most asked-for speaker, Laurilee Thompson, Owner of Dixie Crossroads, and a knowledgeable advocate for saving our ecology. Our April speaker is yet to be determined. Watch for times when tickets can be purchased in Fellowship Hall starting three Sundays prior to each specific breakfast.

Lightning Is The Culprit

by Ed Brown

You probably know that Florida is the Lightning Capital of the U.S. There are 3,500 lightning strikes in Florida each day! Many of these strikes are a source of ignition for the 1,730 wildfires in our state each year. Potential St. John’s River Flood Plain wildfires, at our back and side doors, are an ever-present possibility. So what exactly is lightning? You may have experienced the surprising static electrical discharge after sliding across a car seat on a cold, dry day. As your hand approaches a good ground in the car, a spark jumps. That is lightning on a small scale. On a larger scale, outdoors, wind and rising thermals can carry negative electrical charges from the earth’s surface up into the atmosphere. The negative charge builds up and will eventually jump to a positive ground within the cloud (cloud to cloud lightning) or to the surface of the earth or specific objects (cloud to ground lightning). In December, a small thunder squall took out electricity for much of TGO for several hours. The heat of explosively expanding air is what causes the thunder clap. If you count the seconds between flash and bang, then multiply by 1000 feet per second (roughly speed of sound), you can tell the proximity of the storm to your location and judge whether it is getting closer or departing. If the flash and bang continue to be concurrent (rare), perhaps a small prayer would be appropriate too! The voltage of a lightning strike can be over 3000 volts. The temperature can exceed that of the surface of the Sun! The odds of being struck by lightning are slim: only 27 people per year in the U.S. Only about 3% result in fatality. A place of refuge in a lightning storm would be inside the steel cage which is your car (convertibles don’t qualify). Avoid sheltering under trees, being in the water, leaning on a chain link fence or standing in an open field. Get off that aluminum ladder! This would be an inappropriate time to inspect and clean your gutters! Of far more practical concern is what a lightning strike can do to your home electronics. It can fry your computer, your TV and your land lines (if you have them). When a lightning storm is imminent, turn off, unplug and take cover indoors! If you see someone fall from a lightning strike, get them and yourself to a safe spot. The victim will not be carrying a charge. Check for breathing and heartbeat; if none: clear airway and start CPR. Have a “helper” get an AED. (We have seven in TGO. “The Happenings” lists the AED locations on page 10). Draft another “helper” to call 911. Continue CPR. Lightning is a “culprit.” It is also a source of wonder and natural beauty, if we are FIREWISE and keep our roofs, gutters and our grounds free of flammable materials. Visit Firewise.org to learn more about Firewise and its importance to our community. Our Firewise Program is coordinated by the TGO Firewise Committee, which meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 1:00 pm in the TGO Conference Room. All residents of The Great Outdoors are welcome to attend.

The T.G. Carlson Nature Center building houses the Nature Center museum, library, meeting room and a kitchen. The building also has a climate controlled enclosed porch where you can relax, read a book or have a bug-free picnic lunch. The building is open to TGO residents, renters and their guests seven days a week from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. This building went from an old camp site to a new modern concrete building. Cover Story - Golf Course Renovation Below are a few of the questions we have received. We had our TGO Golf Pro, Chuck Kandt, and Golf Course Superintendent, Shane Willey, provide some answers. At this early date they caution that it’s difficult to provide a definitive answer for each question, but these will provide a general idea of the direction we are headed. What is the planned start date and expected completion date? The renovation is scheduled to kick off in April 2024. It should take approximately six to eight months, but we are at the mercy of Mother Nature for all phases of this project. Many courses open up too soon and pay the price several months later with underdeveloped turf that cannot withstand high amounts of traffic for extended periods of time, so we need to be cautious and make sure we don’t open the course too soon. Why do you have to renovate all 18 holes simultaneously? Can’t we just do the front 9 and then the back 9 so we can still have a golfing option? Renovating 9 holes at a time is a possibility for some golf clubs, but it is not the best option for our club, purely based on the layout of our property and the amount of fill dirt we will be using to improve areas and drainage. Closing the whole course at once allows us to use materials from the current property which is cost effective. There is an overhead cost associated with any project and spreading the renovation over a two year, two phase approach would actually cost more in the long run and most likely involve two separate bidding processes as contractors and shapers will move on to other projects after year one. Also, with the entire irrigation system being reconstructed, all 18 holes will be involved with that part of the renovation so it makes much more sense to do the shaping and grass work for all 18 holes at the same time.

Our golf course looks better than it ever has and is one of the best courses in north Brevard County, so why do we need to renovate it? There are many reasons why we need to renovate. The first is the age of the irrigation system. The irrigation system is the back bone of a golf course. Having the correct and updated irrigation system will benefit the golf course by allowing us to properly control how much water is being applied, which will aid in proper turf management. The second reason is the green complexes. Over the years the green complexes have shrunk in size and contaminated grasses have encroached in. The renovation would fix the size and contamination issues. Although the top of the greens may look amazing, it’s what’s underground that is the issue with the green structures.

Although the top of the greens may look amazing, it’s what’s underground that is the issue with the green structures. The current material on our green complexes stays very wet and acts as a sponge. This prevents roots from penetrating the soil depth, and allows for more disease pressure. The stronger the roots, the stronger the turf will be in order to fight disease pressure. The renovation would properly build the green structures with the right soil and materials to allow for proper drainage and allow the turf to be properly maintained for better health. A vast majority of this project will be underground and not visually seen on a daily basis to golfers, but what is underground is the main component of a golf course. Without fixing these main components the turf health will continue to struggle. Image on the left is a plug from the #1 Green - you can see how the roots are very compacted, very wet and sponge-like and will not penetrate the soil. Image on the right is from our Nursery Green. The sandy soil stays dry and allows roots to penetrate the soil. The renovation will include green structures that will allow for proper drainage and a healthier course.

36

Will the driving range still be available during renovation? The area at the practice facility is one of the possible staging areas for the large influx of equipment and materials. We also hope that some renovation work can be done to the practice area as part of the overall project. Keeping the range open is not part of the plan at the present time.

Regarding degree of difficulty - will the new course be the same or harder? The degree of difficulty will have to wait until we start playing the new course. There will be some additional strategic shots not present with today’s course but trying to make the course more difficult was not part of the planning disCan we set up an additional putting range - other than the cussions. The course will receive a new rating from all tee locations which might be a better indicator of a change in one by the Blue Heron? A larger nursery green along with a plan calling for two put- difficulty. ting greens and three small practice area greens will allow Note: 80% of the work planned will never be seen as it is for ample practice space for putting. However, the extent of part of the underground infrastructure. The remaining 20% the plan will be contingent on how the expenses match up is what we will all enjoy - a beautiful golf course with new with our budget during the bid processing and actual con- grass and greens. struction phase of the project. Will there be any reciprocation programs with other local golf courses? Yes, but it is too early to provide any more details. We are also researching the possibility of a Golf Simulator during the renovation period. Will the golf cart paths also be renovated? This part of the renovation project will be contingent on how expenses play out. Our initial plan calls for several areas of coquina paths instead of cement. Will the existing 18 holes remain in the same location or will there be changes? The layout of the course will not change. However, several holes were earmarked from the onset of the planning stage to divert the sight lines of how the holes are played, away from homesites. Major sight changes of holes and hole routing will not be in the plan. Sanford Golf Design has provided renderings for each of our 18 holes showing the new greens placement, yardage and hole improvements. (Sample)

Nature Trail Measurements

Thanks to Richard Peraza, he has taken the guesswork out of how far it is while walking the Nature Trail. The chart to the right breaks down the amount of feet between waypoints and provides the mileage as well. The longest stretch, one way, is from Addison Way entry to the Waste Treatment Plant, a total of 2.06 miles. Turn around and go back and you have a 4+ mile walk!

Lynne Cassidy knows how to get the dog’s attention.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 38 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby: • It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator. • Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes. • Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline. • Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes. • While alligators can be active at any time, they are active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources. • Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve. • For your safety, as well as the safety of your family and pets, KEEP YOUR DISTANCE! If you have an issue with an alligator, please call Sandy Juba at 321-543-0502 or Betty Salter at 321-223-8073. Both are experienced in dealing with TGO wildlife.

The TGO driving range is a great place to watch the Space Coast rocket launches, as was the case on Monday, January 31, when SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket from Complex 40.

There are lots of websites that provide information and schedules for Space Coast launches. Between SpaceX, United Launch Alliance and NASA’s Space Launch System it looks like we’re going to have a spring and summer full of exciting viewing opportunities.

Here are a few websites that include launch schedules and details about the flights: www.spacecoastlaunches.com ww.spacex.com/launches www.visitspacecoast.com/launches www.kennedyspacecenter.com

Titusville Talking Points Magazine

Titusville Talking Points is a quarterly magazine and video series created in house by the City of Titusville for citizens, visitors, and business owners. New issues of the Titusville Talking Points magazine come out in January, April, July, and October around the middle of the month, which is followed shortly thereafter with a video version on the city’s YouTube channel. Hard copies are handed out free of charge at City Hall.

The magazine features construction and project updates, human interest stories, city government news, and other updates pertaining to Titusville and the immediate area. A great source for keeping up with what is both new and old and what the future holds for our home town. For more information or to read the magazine online, visit www.Titusville.com/TalkingPoints

Happenings Around The Great Outdoors If you don’t currently have an instagram account, TGO resident and nature photographer Robin Francis might be a good reason you should start one. Robin is one of several great photographers in TGO who share their photos. Most residents are familiar with her Facebook account where she posts most of her images, but her Instagram account is definitely worth following. www.instagram.com/robin.francis.5

Kris Lee Scott has been a resident of TGO since March 2001. She is also an expert when it comes to Apple products - especially the iPhones. Kris hosts weekly scheduled classes to teach you the best way to get the most out of your iPhones. If you have questions about Photos, iCloud or more, give her a call! 321-243-4324.

The recent cold snap we had played havoc on a lot of plants in TGO and that’s why Liz Bonislawsky and Sugar Jaffe took charge of replacing two of the damaged plants in front of Doggy World. Thanks, ladies, for your help in keeping TGO beautiful!

Happenings Around The Great Outdoors Beautification Award Ralph and Janet Cripps 799 Plantation Drive

The February Beautification Award goes to Ralph and Janet Cripps of 799 Plantation Drive. They have lived here for five years and lived previously in Fort Lauderdale and Ohio. Many homeowners stick to greenery but the Cripps are committed to color and you can see it in both the front and back of their house which faces the dog path. The front of the house has two Bougainvillea, several Crown of Thorns, some Mexican heather and a Bottlebrush tree. Greenery is added via some very healthy Jade plants and a tall Podocarpus bush. When asked how he protects the garden from hungry deer, Ralph explained that he has three deer repellant devices which, after dark, detect motion and emit a spray of water. He is also a keen “do it yourselfer” who designed and built the flower boxes in the back of the house and also trims the Robellini Palms in the front yard. Congratulations on this award!

Jerry, the ice cream man, is a big hit in TGO. You can catch him on Fridays from 4:00 to 9:00 pm.
