Waterfalls

The sound, the sight and the experience of visiting a waterfall can work magic on anyone regardless of who you are. No matter your hobbies, interests or personality type, visiting a waterfall can be a truly awesome experience any time of the year.

For instance, those “adrenaline junkies” among us may feel energized by the rush of a waterfall’s swift springtime flow along steep rock formations. Geology & History buffs can visit and learn about the formation of waterfalls due to glaciers and igneous rock formations. Science enthusiasts may be interested to learn that waterfalls are a natural source of negative ions. Sometimes known as the “waterfall effect”, negative ions are released whenever water collides with itself. The negative ions are tossed in the air and we can reap the benefit by breathing them in. Health & Wellness fans may be intrigued to learn that after reviewing over 100 years of scientific studies, researchers found evidence that negative ions have the ability to reduce stress, boost immune system function and help regulate sleep patterns and mood!

The states of Wisconsin and Michigan are fortunate to be host to a multitude of waterfalls that flow through the land. Whether you find yourself traveling through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan/Iron County, Wisconsin area or through the North West, North Central or North Eastern portion of Wisconsin, visiting a waterfall (or several!) is sure to be a memorable experience. Please be sure to exercise caution when hiking and adhere to posted regulations and rules.

of the NorthSomething for Everyone

There are multiple drops to this waterfall and several paths down to the river that vary in difficulty. The upper falls can be viewed from an observation deck. From the observation deck, visitors can also make their way down 200 steps to view the lower falls. This is a strenuous walk but well worth it to view the impressive lower falls crashing 40-50 feet over the wide rock face.

Interstate Falls & Peterson Falls Hurley, WI Iron County

You will most likely hear this 18 foot waterfall crashing into the Montreal River before you see it! Located just upstream is Peterson Falls. Be sure to watch your footing as there are no fences and it’s possible to get right down to the base or top of the falls.

Superior Falls Near Saxon, WI Iron County

Located on the Montreal River just a few hundred yards from Lake Superior, Superior Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in Wisconsin with an impressive total drop distance of 110 feet across several levels. As with most waterfalls in this area, Springtime is considered the best season to visit as water levels are high resulting in fast-moving flows.

Wren Falls Saxon Area, WI Iron County

After parking at an intersection connecting Casey Sag Road and Vogues Road in Saxon, WI, visitors can wander down the unmarked dirt road 1.3 miles to a fork in the road. Veer right and follow path to a rustic campsite at the end of the road. Wren Falls is just to the left and there is an excellent view from atop the 30 foot canyon wall. You can also venture down the steep hill to the base of the falls which is considered the most impressive view. This waterfall powerfully crashes through a narrow rock canyon and drops 15 feet to the pool below.

This scenic waterfall is nestled under a railroad trestle which adds to the scenic and historical interest. Located in Roadside Park, Agate Falls is considered to be one of Upper Michigan’s most picturesque waterfalls. These falls are created as the Ontonagon River finds its way over an extended shelf of terraced sandstone. The resulting waterfall is a broad band of interlacing cascades and small falls nearly 40 feet high. Access to view the falls is via a foot path a half-mile in length. Parking, water, toilets and picnic tables are available.

This is a fast-flowing waterfall surrounded by impressive root-beer colored rock. This State Park offers camping, hiking, biking, fishing and swimming opportunities in Loon Lake.

Cascade Falls Osceola, WI Polk County

Located in the center of Osceola, Cascade Falls is a popular attraction and a must see. The water drops 25 feet off a rocky cliff and as you walk closer to the falls you can actually feel the mist spraying the air. A walkway over the river provides good views of the waterfall but visitors can get off the walkways for more exploring. It’s even possible to walk behind these impressive falls! Other notable Polk County falls include; Buttermilk Falls, Geiger Falls, and Silverbrook Falls

Northcentral Wisconsin

Grandfather Falls Near Merrill, WI Lincoln County

Grandfather Falls, the highest waterfall on the Wisconsin River, is located approximately 12 miles north of Merrill on Highway 107. The total drop is 89 feet spread out in a series of cascades over 1 mile. Several hundred million years ago, the northern highlands of Wisconsin were an alpine mountain range. Beneath this range, igneous rock formed which now is called pre-Cambrian bedrock, the top layers of the mountains having been worn down by erosion. Grandfather Falls lie in a pre-Cambrian rock bed and is a remnant of the physical geography of this ancient mountain range. The upper third of the falls and most of the flow is diverted through a canal and a series of penstocks to feed hydroelectric generators. A parking area at the top of the penstocks on the west side of Highway 107 offers access to the Ice Age Trail and Grandfather Falls.

Northeast Wisconsin

From the Menominee River near Niagara to the Village of Crivitz, Marinette County is home to 14 waterfalls which are primarily located within county parks.

Long Slide Falls Pembine Area, WI Marinette County

Located a few miles north of Pembine, WI, Long Slide Falls is a long steep slide among impressive rock formations. Considered by many to be one of the most impressive of the Waterfalls of the Lake Michigan Watershed, Long Slide Falls is easy to visit and with its 50 foot scenic slide it is the highest of waterfalls in this region. Visitors may clamber around on the rocks to get a different view but are encouraged to be careful as there are steep drops and no fences or railings.

Smalley Falls Pembine Area, WI Marinette County

Smalley Falls is a miniature version of Long Slide Falls which is located ½ mile downstream. The falls drop approximately 10 feet across a span of 100 feet. There is a small parking area and a trail that leads to the falls or access the falls by walking a short distance from Long Slide Falls.

Daves Falls Amberg Area, WI Marinette County

Daves Falls is a small waterfall located 1 mile south of Amberg, WI in Daves Falls County Park. It is off U.S. Highway 141 between Old 38 Road and Old Highway 141 Road. In addition to the scenic falls and easy 0.6 mile hike, the park offers playground and restroom facilities.

BAYFIELD - We recommend making at least one trip up to Mt. Ashwabay, about 3 miles south of downtown Bayfield!

This non-profit performing arts organization operates an intimate 900 seat, canvas tent theater. Big Top produces and presents a summer season of concerts, interactive lectures, and features original shows from their highly acclaimed professional local ensemble - The Blue Canvas Orchestra (BCO).

Alongside talent from the region, Big Top continuously features nationally known artists. This year includes Michael Franti and Spearhead, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Mat Kearney, Sierra Ferrell, Nickel Creek, and Killer Queen - A Tribute to Queen with more acts being added weekly.

The tent season runs from June to September and runs educational outreach and produces performance broadcasts year-round.

When the warm summer nights allow the tent walls to be lifted you will see patrons enjoying the show and basking in the moonlight. The stars seem to have extra twinkle when the modern sound system is contrasted against the abundant natural surroundings.

Logging Lore Comes Alive at Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows

HAYWARD & WOODRUFF - Logging has been a vital part of Wisconsin’s history dating back into the late 1800’s, and the life of the lumberjack remains a vivid element of Wisconsin folklore. Before the days of rail roads and highways, loggers would often float their harvested logs down the rivers to the nearest sawmills. Lumberjacks would often have to go out on the floating mass of logs to clear jams that often occurred when floating wood down streams. Little did they know that their dangerous occupation would later become a demanding athletic pursuit.

Many of the Scheer kids’ family spent numerous summers balancing and rolling on the logs on Lake Hayward in the bay of Lumberjack Bowl…the home of the Lumberjack World Championships Competition. Their summer fun trained them to become fierce competitors in the logrolling event (birling) of the Lumberjack World Championships (LWC) held in Hayward every July. Eventually they expanded their activities and became skillful at the boom run and pole climbing, as well as other events that were part of the LWC.

In 1981, Fred and Robert Scheer established the original Scheer’s Lumberjack Show and used their lumberjack skills to entertain area tourists. More than a demonstration, the show features a competition between two lumberjack teams as they do 10 differ-

ent events, including log rolling, pole climbing and crosscut saw. Cheering the teams on gets the crowd involved in the show and down-home humor has everybody chuckling.

The original venue for the show in 1981 was a small dock on the shore of Lake Hayward, behind what was then Windmill Square. The show’s lumberjacks delighted small crowds and it soon became apparent the production needed more space. In 1985 the Scheer brothers opened a second Show in Woodruff, WI and in 1988 they moved their Hayward Show to Lumberjack Village. The Hayward Show is now in its 43rd year of operation

Fred is now the sole owner of Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows and the Lumberjack Village. Training young athletes to be lumberjacks is still a fulfilling role for Fred. Through the years many lumberjacks have come, performed and moved on to other careers. Numerous world champion logrollers, pole climbers and boom-runners had their start as apprentices in Fred Scheer’s lumberjack Show and the cast has always included world champion lumberjacks. A world champion log roller himself, Fred occasionally delights audiences by personally participating in a show.

“If you’re doing what you love, then nothing else matters....until you fall into either of the lakes during the pre-season. Then being good at water sports matters,” jokes Deven Blair, show manager.

For all the years Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows has been in Hayward and Woodruff, it continues to draw crowds. One might say that a visit to northern Wisconsin isn’t complete without seeing a Scheer’s Lumberjack Show.

Book a Wisconsin Great Northern Train Ride

TREGO - Whether you’re a dedicated train rider or wondering what a train ride is like, this is the year to hop aboard the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad. The Wisconsin Great Northern is back this season with some special surprises to delight passengers. The family-operated excursion train is celebrating its 26th anniversary this year.

Among the new features is the introduction of America’s only all-private dining aboard the “dinner train.” Accommodating up to six people, each enclosed dining room is especially suitable for birthday and anniversary celebrations. A favorite of many, the “bed & breakfast train” returns with first-class accommodations. Like other trips, this one travels at a leisurely pace as it makes its way through farm fields, deep woods and along the scenic Namekagon River. Their renowned “family pizza train” will now feature pizzas made fresh onboard the train. Wisconsin Great Northern also has other train rides, including the “wine & cheese train,” and later in the year, the “Santa pizza train.”

Major track improvement and upgrades to many of their cars have been completed. They are also putting the finishing touches on the complete rebuild of the Mark Twain Zephyr, a gleaming Art Deco passenger train from 1935. The Mark Twain Zephyr was one of nine stainless steel streamlined trains built by the Budd Company for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy in the 1930s.

These shovelnose trains forever changed train travel as they ushered in a new era of passenger railroading in North America. You can learn more about the project at the website, marktwainzephyr. com.

The train depot is located four miles north of Spooner along U.S. 53-63. For more information and reservations (required) call 715635-3200 or visit spoonertrainride.com. www.madferry.com

Craig Lake State Park rewards those seeking adventure & solitude

CHAMPION, MI – When warm weather finally arrives, check out the camping and fishing possibilities in Baraga County. Discover a touch of wilderness and adventure at Craig Lake State Park. It’s the most remote state park in Michigan’s DNR system. Access to the park itself is a bit of an adventure, as the road is rocky. It’s recommended you go with vehicles with high ground clearance. The park is located one mile west of Michigamme. The park contains lakes and numerous small ponds along with a variety of wildlife such as deer, black bear, beaver, loons and a portion of the Upper Peninsula moose herd. The park offers walk-in campsites (first come, first served) and other camping options, including two cabins for rent and one yurt just a twomile hike from the parking area.

Don’t forget your fishing pole and bring only artificial lures. The 374-acre Craig Lake, largest of the six lakes, is known for its muskellunge, bass, walleye and northern pike fishing. It has six islands and high granite bluffs along its northern shore. Teddy Lake offers good panfish fishing. There are several portages ideal for canoes on both lakes. Keewaydin Lake offers the only boat launch in the park and is the only lake that allows motorboats; motorized boats are not permitted on any other lakes to preserve the area’s pristine qualities. Contact the park for more information.

Not surprising, this park offers some of the most rugged trails in Michigan. An eight-mile trail loops around Craig Lake and offers some great opportunities to view wildlife, fauna and the lakeshore. A 7.5-mile section of the North Country Trail runs through the park. The trail covers some rough terrain, but is well worth the effort. This national route from North Dakota to New York includes more than 1,500 miles in Michigan, including those in Baraga County.

First Friday Music Series Begins

IRONWOOD - Ironwood First Friday events feature live music at the outdoor City Square stage. Made possible by a Michigan Arts & Culture Council grant and local sponsors, the annual Summer Music Series is a highlight of Ironwood’s First Friday of the month celebrations.

Artists appearing are Merrill Miller, June 2; Billy Bronsted, July 7; XTRA, August 8; and Paige Hargrove, September 8. All concerts are from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in Ironwood’s City Square.
