The Francis Hallé Association for a Primary Forest was founded in 2019 at the botanist’s initiative, backed by scientists, naturalists, filmmakers, photographers and citizens, all convinced of the need to bring back primary forest to Western Europe. The Association now has 2,500 members from 13 countries, and its general interest and environmental vocation have been acknowledged at European level. intervention over a period of several centuries. The location of the zone remains to be determined but it would cross borders and have a French base. The project would have to run for several centuries because it is estimated that it takes between eight hundred and one thousand years for a primary forest to regenerate. The project has given rise to great public interest for reasons both philosophical and ecological. The forest would be monitored by nearby scientific and cultural installations and would be a boon to local sustainable development. As the manifesto explains, the Association hopes to mobilize public opinion to achieve the necessary political and administrative agreements. Urgent action is required.

rimary forests are forests that have not been cleared, exploited or altered in any way by human hand. They are jewels in the crown of nature, pinnacles of biodiversity. Their benefits are invaluable: CO2 capture, climate regulation, biodiversity conservation, and havens for water resources, not forgetting their sheer beauty, another indispensable aspect of our lives. In the tropics the last primary forests are declining at an alarming rate. In Europe they have practically disappeared since 1850, replaced by man-managed secondary forests, and the only one that still does exist in Poland is also in grave danger. Other countries in temperate zones have managed to conserve part of their primary forestry and treasure it. Why does Europe not doPOthe same? The botanist and biologist, Francis Hallé is a specialist in trees and tropical forests. He has written a number of publications including, for Actes Sud, Plaidoyer pour l’arbre (2005), La Condition tropicale (2010), Il était une forêt (with Luc Jacquet, 2013), Plaidoyer pour la forêt tropicale (2014) and Mais d’où viennent les plantes ? (with Roland Keller, 2019). In October 2021, he will be contributing to a new Actes Sud publication, Le Radeau des Cimes. Trente années d’exploration des canopées forestières équatoriales.
