#trending the new normal is change By AHLC Staff
2020 changed everything -- the way we interact with each other, the way we shop, the way we do business. It’s changed the way we order our supplies, interact with our clients and market our businesses. From the front of our studios to the back door, 2021 is bringing new trends to just about every aspect of the industry. We take a look at some of the emerging trends, starting with studios.
Rethinking That Space For some, gone are the piles of beauty magazines set out for perusal. Gone too are the plush waiting rooms with coffee and wine service. Many of us saw the benefits of converting or upcycling the way we use our reception areas or waiting rooms. And even the way we wait for appointments. The “waiting room” is now the comfort, and privacy, of the front seat of our cars! This frees up space for a variety of uses. University of Nevada, Las Vegas associate professor and environmental psychologist Dan Kopec suggests waiting areas be reconfigured into “pods” that are more like small rooms within a large waiting area. In the online publication Managed Healthcare Executive, Kopec says an alternative to pods would be walls at least 7 feet high to prevent the spread of any virus and provide privacy.
Maximizing Small Spaces Flora Fuentes, owner of Unique Hair Concepts in Ardsley, New York, said her suburban location outside of New York City requires creative use of his space. “For the most part, New York commercial spaces are small so we utilize every square footage of our space,” she said. “My waiting area was always an intimate setting. We removed decorative pillows, magazines and closed our coffee station. “Following the guidelines, only guests with scheduled appointments were allowed into the center. No additional family members, companions, or friends unless it was a client under the age of 18 or a guest who had to be accompanied by a care provider were permitted in the consultation room or the treatment room. They were welcome to wait in the waiting area or some would wait in the comfort of their car in the parking lot,” Fuentes said. “Truthfully, my stylists felt less stress having to cater to different opinions in the treatment room and focus solely on the client. Most importantly, we all felt safer. We decided that this continues with our mission to provide a warm, safe, and private
environment for our guests and our team. I do not foresee changing this approach as restrictions start to lift.”
New Space, New Design Lisa Ferestad of Cura Hair Solutions in Atlanta said a new home for her business gave her the opportunity to rethink traditional salon design. “We recently purchased a new space for our center and have decided to eliminate the waiting area or traditional lobby in our design,” she said. “We will continue the COVID protocols of having our clients call or text when they arrive. This maintains privacy for our clients and maximizes our revenue-generating opportunities in our studio.
Staying Aware While the physical layout of a salon is one thing, Susan Kettering, owner of HRI Of Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh, says timing is everything. “We created a policy years ago that we always leave a 10-minute space between clients,” she said. “It helps if my client runs late or needs to tweak their hair or for a small repair or to discuss new hair. The main reason above all is client confidentiality. We have clients who are in the same business circle and we stay very alert to who’s coming and going. But it gives us time to disinfect our rooms and bring the client in as soon as they walk in the door. Saturdays and holidays are a bit harder to control but we do our best.” THE LINK MAGAZINE

#trending:styles how to achieve these looks with alternative hair
By Judy Geisinsky, Creative Officer and Wig Wearer for over 20 years Freshen up your client’s look. Read on for inspiration on the top trending hair looks that you can use to refresh your wig, topper, or alternative hairstyle.
Bangs, Bangs and More Bangs While quarantine bangs might have seemed like a fad, stylists are still incorporating every single bang style into their current cuts. There are lots of bang options for everyone. In addition to the highly popular curtain bangs full bangs, shaggy bangs, wispy bangs, and even side bangs are practically everywhere right now.
Curtain Bangs
The Shag
Not quite ready to make a permanent change? Check out clip-on bangs to get the bang look without the commitment.
2021 is about the return of the shag. It requires a ton of layering, which helps to create texture for a cool, lived-in look.
How to Achieve This Look Bangs work well on your natural hair as well as wigs, toppers or hair replacements. I love taking old wigs or toppers that have challenging front hairlines and cutting in a trendy bang. This gives a nice fresh look and eliminates the cost and hassle of fixing or repairing the front. It is advised to go to a stylist who is experienced in cutting alternative hair since the placement and density vary from natural hair. When cutting bangs it’s important to blend the bangs and remove weight with point-cutting techniques to create that natural, seamless look.
How to Achieve This Look Layering wigs and toppers create an illusion of volume and help frame your face. It also helps your style from falling. It’s important to make sure the layers blend well to create a balanced look. With wigs and toppers, everything is about balance. When they’re top-heavy it can create an unflattering mushroom or helmet effect. Layering also removes weight that provides a more natural look. It’s always recommended to go to an experienced wig stylist to create this flawless trendy look. CONTINUED ON PAGE 9 THE LINK MAGAZINE

Short Bobs
#trending
The chic French-inspired, ‘90s bob is the new way to keep your hair prim and polished. This look is great for anyone who wants an easy-going style, as it looks great with straight, wavy, curly, and coily hair. How to Achieve This Look Bobs are usually trickier than layered looks since straight lines allow little room for error. When cutting a bob, finish it off on the client’s head since it may lay differently on a mannequin head. Removing weight from the bottom line helps keep the density consistent with bio hair. If cutting a short bob, it helps to keep the inside length a little shorter to prevent the hair from sticking out from underneath. For an edgier look on a straight bob, I advise clients to style going straight down as opposed to rounded under.
Face Framing Highlights: Money Pieces Also known as face-framing highlights, money piece hair is a popular coloring technique that is achieved when you get the front strands of your hair balayaged a brighter shade (usually two to three shades lighter). The finished result leaves you with face-framing “money pieces” that add dimension to your hair and help brighten and lift your complexion. Unlike chunky, e-girl highlights, this technique is seamless and can look more natural, depending on your preferences. So, why are they called money pieces? This is mainly because they make your hair “look” expensive, so it’s no wonder they’re loved by celebs all-over — Beyoncé, Gisele and Kylie Jenner are all fans. How to Achieve This Look Color adds a pop of dimension to your face and complements anyone when done well. I always refer to hair color as makeup in the way it enhances your face. When you have makeup in your hair it requires less makeup on your face while still providing that dimensional pop. Money pieces can soften your face and provide a trendy, updated look. It is always recommended to go to a colorist who is experienced with wigs, toppers or alternative hair, as the hair reacts differently to color. Always have your colorist test strand to assess the capability of the hair. Color when done well provides a natural look.
Barely There Waves These “baby waves” look natural, high-fashion, and ultra-cool. Take a 1-inch curling iron and lightly curl random sections of the hair, pulling each piece taut afterward to straighten it out a bit. Keep it light by combing through your hair with a wide-tooth comb afterward instead of a brush. The trick to this style is keeping your ends and roots straight. How to Achieve This Look Imperfect hair makes a wig look that much more natural. Perfect is never good on a wig. I love some flyaways, hair sticking up and tousled hair. This creates a lived-in, natural look that deflects the eye from spotting a wig or topper. Hair is not meant to be perfect so mimicking the imperfections is the goal. To create this tousled look I recommend running a larger curling iron through the hair but leaving out the ends. YouTube has great tutorials on creating a tousled look effect. The more you practice the better you’ll get. Rome wasn’t built in a day but practicing these techniques will turn you into a mini-stylist. I recommend getting comfortable with maintaining your look in between salon visits so you can always look and feel your best. THE LINK MAGAZINE

Hair Keepsakes that Help the Healing
By Stacey M. Handel, AHLC Certified Master, Garde Bien Salon, Inc. Knoxville, TN Keepsakes are mementos from the heart and represent something deeply cared for. While many people save photos or clothing such as wedding gowns and team jerseys or baby teeth, more than 60% of parents save hair from their child. Parents make a big event of the first haircut by taking photos, videos and then save the hair in a frame or baby book. My mother saved a ponytail from my childhood, which is in safekeeping.
Imagine sitting in a doctor’s office, waiting for test results, praying for good news and fearing a diagnosis that will create a disruption in your life. Being diagnosed with cancer is devastating. Being told chemotherapy is the recommended treatment plan, a woman can be flooded with emotions of fear, anger and depression. Surprisingly, only minutes after absorbing the news of having a deadly disease a woman will ask, “Will I lose my hair?” “Losing your hair is an outwardly, obvious sign that you’re sick,” said one woman. “In addition to the unwanted attention, the thought of losing my hair made me feel more sadness than the thought of losing my breasts. It may sound silly, but many women and men who have faced a cancer diagnosis will understand what I mean. It’s pretty devastating and usually one of the first things you as a patient, see cancer taking from you.” Although a cancer patient copes with doctor appointments, infusions, sudden changes in their body, aches and pains, weight loss, weight gain, sensitivities, red skin redness, and puffiness, most people fear going bald. It is dramatically visible. Hair is her identity. Her fun. Her mood. Her girliness. Her normalcy. CONTINUED ON PAGE 13

Hair Keepsakes CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11
Bald is Beautiful? It’s a Private Matter A chemo patient should be thrilled that chemotherapy is victorious in killing cancer cells through her tingling scalp and hands-full of hair. This is evidence the chemotherapy drugs are killing cancer when hair cells are being killed. Losing hair is losing privacy. “When you lose your hair (going bald or wearing a turban) everyone knows what you are going through. I got those looks of pity – no one knows how to speak to you,” one patient said. Chemo baldness isn’t a choice but preserving your hair is consoling. Human hair wigs are in actuality wearing someone else’s hair, a stranger’s hair. It is empowering to somewhat control the fallout and keep your own hair. One cancer patient wrote: “Wearing hair allowed me to maintain my self-image throughout my treatment and spared me the visual indignity of having a serious illness. It’s an attempt to keep quality of life during a tumultuous and frightening time, and that is something that cannot be underestimated”.
A New Way to Make a Keepsake During wig consults prior to starting treatments, clients ask us to cut their hair before it starts falling out. In addition to a wig, I am asked about attaching hair to a baseball cap, something we have done many times with wefts. A client, Debby, who had not yet started her chemo shed, asked if I could use her own hair to make the cap. We have also designed caps for clients with alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis using donor hair from a family member.
The Cutting Appointment Being thoroughly prepared for this appointment is the beginning of generosity. Start the appointment on time. The focus needs to be on her. Stay calm, resolute and confident because her world is cracking. No rushing, no interruptions, and privacy is a must. I am armed with tissues and patience. I try to mimic her mood; be in the background.
I encourage clients to bring a support person when we cut their hair as this type of appointment can be difficult. Debby brought her sister. The first snip is monumental and acceptance of the inevitable. To prepare each section of hair, I plan the length to leave her hair, where to band, and where to cut leaving as much hair to design her cut. During construction of the cap, it is possible to lose an inch or more in the interior of the cap. Since Debby had not cut her hair for nearly eight months through the pandemic this gave us more than enough length to work with. To salvage as much hair and length as we could, we decided on a short pixie cut until her shed. Banding dozens of sections will maintain consistent length in the collection. Each banded section is labeled. The payoff was immediate after a client, Debbie, received her cap. “It lifted my spirits after finishing chemo and realizing I still have a way to go before I will have enough hair to go without my wig or any covering,” she wrote in a letter. “ Being able to touch my own hair is therapeutic. It brings me joy! Plus, the hat looks amazing! I’ve received so many (compliments) and no one knows I’m bald underneath. Some ladies look at me when I’m wearing it and say, “Your hair looks great! So, you didn’t (lose) your hair with chemo?” For decades, I participated in many organizations, programs, and events to share my talents. I have a special connection with cancer patients. My family has struggled with cancer and I have lost many to this horrible disease and am honored to give back to cancer survivors. For 10 years, I worked with an annual “Cancer Survivor Wellness Camp” for Thompson Cancer Center. The salon was a collaborative host of citywide “Cuts for the Cure,” and is an affiliate of “Wigs for Kids.” THE LINK MAGAZINE

Customizing Scarves and Hats
Repurposing Your Extra Material
By Roberta Kozel, Salon IAOMO, Pittsburgh, PA How do you customize a hair hat, turban and other head coverings with bang or accent hair? Start with blended synthetic hair that has been permanently attached to a 100% cotton baseball cap, creating a ready-to-wear hair fashion. This process gives an illusion of a full head of hair by adding pieces to give it a bang or an all-around hair look. By strategically customizing stock pieces we save scrap pieces to repurpose for the hair accent strategy. Those scrap pieces are attached to the inside of the baseball cap, turban, or head covering and styled to a client’s preference. Each piece is stitched by hand to the head covering.

Start with a stock base using a sharp scalpel. With light pressure, cut the excess base away from the unit itself. Make sure you protect the extra material piece so it does not fray.
Here is an example of what the extra material would look like before sewing into a cap or turban.
3
Now that you have the extra piece, get a baseball cap to add accent hair. Flip the baseball cap over, flip over the sweatband to face outward to attach the extra material. Using straight pins, secure the extra material to the sweatband. Make sure it looks even from side to side before starting to sew. Using a blanket stitch, sew the extra material to the sweatband. Then style and cut if needed to blend with the rest of the hair.

To design a turban, flip it inside out and secure the extra material using straight pins. Ensure the sides are even before starting to sew. Using a blanket stitch, sew the material to the sweatband. Style and cut if needed to blend with the rest of the hair.

Choose Gray By Lisa Ferestad, Cura Hair Solutions, Atlanta, GA I have found a faster alternative to custom ordering, ordering stock systems created with 100% hand-picked gray. This allows me to treat the hair as a blank canvas while shortening my client’s wait time to three weeks.
Here is an example of my process... My client’s desired color outcome was an overall level 7, with level 8 highlights having some natural gray highlights showing through. One of the benefits of using a gray base is that if you need gray in the end all you have to do is foil out the percentage of gray you want to be left and color around it. During the consultation, I match my client’s hair to color swatches in my studio to build my color road map. This helps me with both my color choices and when I adjust my color formulas after the test strands have dried. Please take the time to do test strands to find the best formula. I often do three or four test strands in an area on the system that can be hidden easily, usually in the back away from the perimeter of the hair. This allows you the option to blend in the test strand if you are not happy with the results. Starting with the blank canvas, 100% human hair in platinum gray from Sherri Renée.
First pass, foiled in the mid-tone. Formula: 1/2 1/4 1/4 Neutral level 8 8G (gold) 8A (ash) When working with hair that has no pigment, balance the formula by adding neutral, warm, and cool tones.
16
THE LINK MAGAZINE
In the second step, I added the lowlight to create depth. The end result is a perfect match for my client’s hair. We are all ready for the cut-in.
Pro Tips from Sherri Renée: Using Gray For Creating Color Effects This method is only advised on virgin or slightly processed European gray. There are four types of gray available, five if you include yak, which we don’t use.
Synthetic Gray This method will not work, as you cannot cover gray with a professional color.
Processed Indian or Chinese hair Starting from a level 2 or 3, hair is highly processed to achieve gray. Hair is given an acid bath, which strips 99% of the color and leaves some unpleasant tones. Hair is
toned using factory fabric dye, usually with a violet base. This process is harsh on hair and compromises the coloring process. Over processed hair is innately too porous with the cuticle open, which leaves additional colorwork unpredictable. Hair color may be uneven, too dark, or even furtherdamage the hair.
European Lightly Processed. Starting from a level 9 or 10 on virgin European hair, hair is gently lifted a level or two up and then toned using an ash violet base. If using this type of hair, please note to use gentle professional color and watch
closely as the cuticle is thin. Excessive bleaching is not advised.
Virgin Hand-picked Gray This is the best gray to use because hair is healthy, intact, and can be used as a white canvas to create almost any color effect. Due to the cuticle being intact and slightly resistant, it may be necessary to “fill” the hair with a neutral first, then tone either warm or cool depending on the desired effect. Think in terms of layering color on as opposed to trying to get the color where you want in the first pass.

Erica Gamble The Wig Dr., Marietta GA
I had a passion for wigs at an early age. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and always witnessing Grandmother “Bessie,” Aunt “Bea,” and mother “Rosa” snatched up in fashion and powerful wigs that I call “hair hats” lead to the Wig Dr’s. creation. Hair is an accessory and I believe it is important for a woman to look and feel her best each day. It all starts with prayer and “good hair.” Having an earned doctorate in Organizational Behavior and Leadership coupled with more than 20 years of leadership and higher education success brought me to my passion. I am currently studying trichology and adding it to my practice. This will be life-changing. I will soon hold a Doctor of Health Sciences with a concentration in trichology.

Scalp Care It’s More Than Skin Deep By Martina Candido, Biologist, Research and Development, Cesare Ragazzi Laboratories What if we told you that taking care of the scalp is the first step to having shiny and healthy hair? It’s all about the basics. It is known that the beauty industry has always focused on the skin – skin from the face to the toes and all the skin in between. The beauty industry has created serums and creams that are meant to be applied each morning to the face and body. But now the part of the body within the skin care spotlight is one that has, until now, escaped our attention – the scalp.
First, let’s debunk an error that a lot of us make: The scalp is skin, not hair. Put simply, the scalp is a quiet ecosystem that works tirelessly to stimulate hair growth and regulate sebum production. But when was the last time you paid attention to your scalp care, beyond a hasty and distracted massage during your daily shampoo routine? Today, with pollution on the increase and the increase in skin problems like psoriasis and eczema, the health of the scalp is more disrupted than ever. In short, it’s time to transfer the attention you give to your face also to your scalp. People are beginning to make the connection between scalp and hair health. CONTINUED ON PAGE 21

Dirt, pollution, dead skin, and sebum can easily build up, making hair dull over time. Additionally, the build-up of products like dry shampoos and conditioners, along with sweat can slow hair growth. It is the same concept behind clogged pores on the face from heavy makeup and creams, blackhead generators, and several other problems that come to the surface. As a biologist specializing trichological science I recommend a daily cleansing of the scalp to keep it free from irritants. So, what products should we place on the list for thorough scalp care? Masks, exfoliants, and specific vials and lotions are created to counteract various problems, from oiliness to dandruff. The newest generation of scalp care products specifically for this area contain, in fact, equivalent ingredients to those for skin care. Many serums stimulate blood flow and increase circulation within the scalp, which accelerates hair growth. Like facial serums, scalp serums also deliver nutrients onto the follicles that enhance shine and strengthen damaged hair. So, if you’re fighting a battle with hair loss or simply want to increase physiological growth, going to the base of the matter with the assistance of scalp products may be a tactic. Beauty and health often go hand in hand, and the health of the hair is directly linked to scalp health. We can’t have beautiful hair if we don’t have a healthy scalp. Itching, redness and flaking are avoidable with a few simple actions, including paying attention to the products you use.
Here are a few suggestions that may help. ▶ Mild, fragrance-free shampoos can help with scalp redness. ▶ Shampoo with moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties can help scalp desquamation. If this isn’t enough, a dermatologist should be consulted. ▶ For excess sebum, or oily scalp, don’t use aggressive anti-oil shampoos. Astringent and purifying products can aid in the balancing of the scalp. Before taking any action, consult a specialist to verify any condition you may have and to consider the overall health of your scalp. It may be enough to restore the scalp’s equilibrium. Create a Rewarding Business Both Financially and Emotionally
By Shanna Moll, Owner, Shanna Moll Studios, Austin, Texas Have you ever thought, “How can I be working 10-12 hour days, have so many wonderful clients, be bringing so much money in, and still feel like I’m treading water as fast as I can?” That’s what was happening at Shanna Moll Studio four years ago. Since then we’ve turned things around with a few easy steps any owner can follow. First, let’s understand what had happened. After a life-changing trip to Israel, I was inspired to add nonsurgical hair replacement to my already full mainstream hair business, which I’ve since had to let go.
I believe God has a hand in everything I do and gives me purpose on a daily basis. Soon after my trip, I received some training in long hair bonding, loved it, and knew it was an untapped part of our industry that I wanted to explore. I decided to move from a private suite into a 1,600-square-foot space that I designed to feel like a spa. I wanted my clients to feel like they were treating themselves by getting their hair done. The business was booming, clients were loving their hair, and I felt great about changing people’s lives. The problem was I didn’t know what I didn’t know. hair replacement. I designed a beautiful salon, hired a CPA and bookkeeper, a publicist, and an apprentice and receptionist. I built relationships with vendors I trusted. The more people learned about the nonsurgical hair replacement services I was providing, the busier I got. But I never had enough money to pay all my bills at the end of every month. After a year in my new space, I realized things needed to change. My receptionist
didn’t want to work on Saturdays and wanted unlimited time off to travel. My apprentice was frustrated every time things changed in the salon as they did often because we were growing so much. I loved being with my clients but was frustrated with the business side of things.

Fortunately, I was able to reconnect with Jeni Rosen, the former principal of my children’s school, who had returned to Austin after three years away. I not only trusted
I realized there are several things any owner can do to avoid some of the mistakes I made and create an emotionally and financially rewarding business.
My Top 6 Tips: 1. Plan for the long term: Have enough money
replacement is a different side of the industry emotionally and you need staff who truly have helping personalities. Build programs to support and reward staff by finding out what matters to them and how they learn best. Provide opportunities for handson learning right away, along with written materials, and use mistakes as learning opportunities. I also offer a retirement plan and health insurance to my team along with quarterly bonuses.
2. Have a scheduled monthly meeting with outside professionals: Ask questions and make sure
5. Always keep up: Continue educating yourself on
banked to cover expenses for six months, anticipate business growth, and design your space to accommodate more than you expect. Be sure to build a good size lab and storage space. This is crucial as you have more clients in hair systems and need space to properly clean, store, color, and prepare for appointments.
your advertising, marketing, bookkeeper and CPA provide you with detailed reports on what they are doing and a monthly profit and loss statement and balance sheet. Advertising and marketing people need guidance and most people don’t understand the reports bookkeepers and CPAs provide, so ask every question you can think of to understand how much revenue you are generating and exactly where the money is being spent. Keep asking until you understand. This way you can make adjustments if needed, and they almost always are.
3. Have professional financing: Use a service like
Care Credit or AdvanceCare Card for clients who need financing. Try not to finance yourself. In the beginning, I was so happy to give people hair and was allowing them to pay it off over several months. This was wonderful for the clients, but I never had enough money in the bank to pay the bills. Now I always get half down and the balance through a credit service.
4. Hire and train support people: Look for people who are great at things that are challenging for you. Make sure you hire people who want to learn and grow themselves. Hair
new trends, techniques, and products. Include your staff so they feel empowered and can adapt when needed. There are many online learning opportunities and these have been perfected during our pandemic and are less expensive to access than having your whole team travel to conferences. But the conferences are finally coming back and are amazing team-building and learning opportunities.
6. Don’t try to do everything: It is important for
salon owners to understand that to build a successful business where you can also have a personal life you need to surround yourself with people who know the things you don’t. Just because you are a great artist and give wonderful service, that doesn’t mean you have the knowledge and skills to run a successful business. Hire the right people to support you and always ask questions and continue your own learning. Don’t just trust professionals to do the right things. In the past four years, I have been blessed to be able to increase revenue by 500% while keeping profits at 30%, develop a team of six people who are supported both emotionally and financially, have hundreds of happy clients all while being able to enjoy life outside of the salon.

my own cap with no glue or clips. It made me feel so much better. After all these years I still do not see myself bald. I know the world around us has changed. On Instagram and other social media, people talk openly about it and have 2,000-plus followers and many wigs. I believe hair loss is a personal matter that is not easily put on a platform.
By Nazy Curtis, Amani Hair, Newport Beach, CA I was diagnosed with alopecia at age 22, and like any diagnosis that doesn’t have a cure, I was in shock. I felt hopeless but decided to do hundreds of cortisone shots, but nothing worked. There would always be a new patch. The next option was taking cortisone pills, which have many side effects including liver damage and moon face. I got the latter. Being the only girl in the family, my mother kept asking, “Why, why my only daughter?” I responded, “Mom if it wasn’t me it would be someone else. Anyone could get this.” I decided to act positively in front of my family. I didn’t want to see the sadness in their eyes and of course, I tried to hide my hair loss from everyone else. Even up to today no one has seen me bald.
I had the motivation to fight for my health. Having small active boys in Southern California who loved any water activity was my greatest driver. Taking them to private swimming lessons and watching them learn new skills, I found the courage to ask the coach if I could take some lessons too. Even wearing my self-designed wig worked out fine. The swimming lesson gave me my first sign that I had the freedom to do any activity I wanted. I had my life back. I’ve competed in three triathlons. Six months after my last triathlon, my life changed again. I was diagnosed with cancer resulting in a left breast mastectomy – all while running a successful salon and multiple hair loss centers. About a month after my mastectomy, while resting after a chemo session, I was spending some time at the beach watching paddle-boarders and paddle-surfers. Even though I was holding on to my chest from the pain of surgery, I had a burning desire to give this a try.
Five years later, while vacationing in Hawaii, I decided to give it a try. Four hours before our flight back to Los Angeles, I had my first paddle-boarding lesson from a local. I shyly told him that I wear a wig and that I feared it would come off. To comfort me, he said, “This is Honolulu and that we’ve seen it all.” I learned to get on the board, get on my knees, stand up, look toward the horizon and paddle forward. I fell in love with the sport. Fast forward to 2018, I placed first in a paddle-board competition. I train now with my good friend and coach, US gold medalist Candice Appleby. My goal is to paddle to Catalina Island to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease and other maladies such as alopecia. How has it changed my life? I came a long way from the days of sitting on my bathroom floor after a shower, sobbing, looking all around me, and seeing my beautiful long hair falling out. After my diagnosis, I gave up on many activities. Even a simple family gathering or barbecue event was not fun. The wigs I was wearing were hot and uncomfortable. This is something we hear from many customers. That affords my clients the freedom to pursue their passions free of fear. They allow an active lifestyle, completely unhindered. How wonderful is this?
I was walking around as a young and enthusiastic new business owner with a moon face and shiny synthetic wig, promoting my new business. You can imagine the sick feeling I was carrying with me every day. Indescribable. Knowing that my hair will not ever come back, I decided to use my own wig-making experience to create my first wig. I sourced the best European human hair, designed

#trending: regenerative medicine the latest generation is here By Alan J Bauman, MD, ABHRS , Bauman Medical Hair Transplant & Hair Loss Treatment Center, Boca Raton, FL “Exosome” is the new buzzword and rising star in the fields of regenerative medicine, stem cell research, as well as traditional medicine and pharmacology because exosomes represent the latest generation of naturally bioactive stem cellbased products for patient treatment.
What is an exosome? Exosomes or extracellular vesicles are tiny packets containing a wide range of cellular information, signals, and instructions that are created inside cells and secreted into their surroundings. They may be taken up by adjacent cells or travel to distant cells. Less than 1/1000 the size of a cell, typically ~100nm in diameter, they can be found in blood, urine, spinal fluid, and saliva.

For many years, exosomes were considered responsible only for the transportation of cellular waste out of a cell–not very glamorous! More recently, however, they have been recognized for their critical role in intracellular communication in health and disease, with now more than 14,000 scientific articles appearing in the clinical literature within the past decade. Because of their potential, biotech companies focused on exosome therapeutics and diagnostics have received hundreds of millions of dollars of investments just within the past few years and the exosome field is projected to be a three billion dollar a year industry by the end of this decade. An undeniable trend in medical research since the 1990s has been away from a traditional pharmaceutical approach toward the concept of regenerative medicine – a way to restore normal function to that which has
Specifically, in the field of hair loss, for example, advances in our understanding of the chronobiology or the internal biological “clock” which regulates cyclical hair follicle function – and therefore hair fiber production, dovetailed with a clearer understanding of how to leverage the body’s own cellular repair pathways, have opened the door to treatments and procedures that have been proven to safely and effectively enhance hair growth without relying upon traditional pharmaceutical interventions.
Exosomes and Hair Follicle Regeneration and Rejuvenation What if the hair regrowth effects observed from stem cell therapy or cell therapy using fat tissue, adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells AD-MSCs, or Platelet-Rich Plasma PRP could be aobtained without the invasive harvesting of adipose via liposuction or a blood
sample? New research supports the use of exosomes as a viable treatment strategy for those with hair thinning, hair loss, wound healing, as well as the treatment of skin disorders. In recent research, exosomes from human dermal papilla cells in the root of the hair follicle and also from activated dermal fibroblasts have been shown to promote hair growth. In other studies, conditioned media which contains the secretome, or chemical messages, released and isolated from the careful incubation of stem cells in the laboratory has also been shown to have a powerful effect on hair growth.
What is involved with an exosome hair growth treatment? An exosome treatment is performed comfortably as a stand-alone, “lunchtime” procedure using local anesthesia so you will not feel the scalp injections of exosomes. The scalp will remain numb for a few hours, but the client may return to regular activities of daily life immediately, resuming athletic activity, hair care, and styling the next day. Exosome therapy can also be used in conjunction with hair transplantation to address thinning in the non-transplanted hair as well as accelerate the healing of transplanted grafts.
SOME EXAMPLES OF REGENERATIVE MEDICINE TECHNOLOGY CURRENTLY USED OR INVESTIGATED IN THE FIELD OF HAIR RESTORATION: • Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) – dual-spin, high monocyte, high platelet • Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) • Porcine Bladder Extracellular Matrix (ACell) • Human Placental Allograft Extracellular Matrix • Bone Marrow MSC-Derived Exosomes • Wharton’s Jelly – Human Umbilical Cord Allograft • Amniotic Fluid Exosomes • Polydioxanone (PDO) Synthetic Extracellular Matrix Scaffold Threads • Adipose-Derived MSCs – “Nanofat” • Adipose-Derived MSC Conditioned Media • IPSCs Induced Pluripotential Stem Cells – a promising area of “hair cloning” research
When will results be seen from exosome hair growth treatment for hair loss? From our observations, hair growth results from exosome treatments become measurable in about three to six months and visibly apparent in six to nine months. However, some patients report even faster results. Like PRP and PDOgro, tracking measurements with HairCheck and other tools tells us how well the treatment is working in each area and when treatment needs repeating.
How much of a hair growth result will be seen from exosome therapy, and how long will it last? As with any hair regrowth therapy or procedure, results may vary. The power, performance, and duration of the measurable and visible results from exosome therapy for hair growth depend on many variables, including age, genetics, risk factors, degree of hair loss, hair quality (color, curl, diameter, density), as well as the use of adjuvant therapies like pharmaceuticals, laser therapy, nutraceuticals, etc.
Will exosomes work for someone with extensive hair loss? Early treatment is always the best treatment. If hair follicles are dead, gone, or beyond repair, it’s unlikely that exosomes will have a substantial effect other than to protect and enhance the hair follicles that can be rejuvenated. To determine what areas of hair loss and hair thinning are likely to respond, a detailed evaluation with an experienced certified and credentialed Hair Restoration Physician is recommended.
Who is not a candidate for exosome treatment for hair loss? While there are no absolute contraindications to exosome therapy known at this time, patients with severe medical issues, including cancer, immune conditions, poorly controlled diabetes, etc., including smokers, should consult with their physician before proceeding with this treatment. #trending social media what works and what doesn’t By Megan Helfond, Marketing Specialist, Jon Renau Consider one of the most valuable reasons users will follow you – quality content. With an ever-changing landscape of online trends, you need to be sure to bring originality to stand out. Focus on the main goal: to create social media content that attracts, engages, and creates value for potential and current clients. We’ve put together the following tips for creating valuable content.
Capture Lifestyle Imagery Current and future clients want to see the work you do and how you impact others through your business. One way to do this is by posting lifestyle images on social media. These are photos with one or more client pictured in a salon or hair-related activity. Lifestyle images tend to be more realistic and perform better than static images of only products, for example. One crucial step before taking lifestyle images is to be aware of lighting and backgrounds. Regardless of the camera you use, an important part of taking images in your salon or hair replacement center is lighting. Choose an area where a window or bright natural lighting is behind you (the photographer). This can be outside but ideally out of direct sunlight and in the shade. When the best lighting is taken into account, this

photo can be of a client with a neutral backdrop such as a brick wall or simple chair set up. Another idea is to use “portrait mode” on an iPhone if you have a busy background that needs to be blurred.
Transformations While some of the most incredible hair transformations require long hours, it’s captivating to see how before and after images change a person’s look and attitude. It ties in the emotional aspect of why we choose to be in this industry: to help your clients gain more confidence and change their lives for the better.
Utilize User-Generated Content Reposting what others are already saying about you online shows potential clients what you are capable of accomplishing. User-generated content is proven to perform better than most other content types. Using images taken by clients also increases their satisfaction because it makes them feel they are included and an important part of the brand. Also, it’s much easier to repost content that has already been created! Simply thank your client for posting their experience, request approval to repost, and once you get the thumbs-up you can repurpose it for your own social media. Plus, it creates a sense of support and community.
Consistency Keep in mind that social media users value quality over quantity. What should be considered most is the meaningfulness of your posts, not if you’re posting several times per day. Be purposeful in what you share!
Analyze When you have clear goals, targeted content, and measurable objectives you are more likely to achieve success. From this, you can focus on what trends and what performs best on your page so it will lead to a higher audience engagement compared to your competitors.
Adjust your tactics and plan accordingly. All in all, it’s important to consider content that is likable, shareable, and overall pleasing. Constantly evaluate your social media performance to understand what you can do better. If you are well versed in the social media world, it can lead to an increase in potential clients and positive word of mouth online conversation. THE LINK MAGAZINE

#trending: google reviews know what your clients are saying By Lenny Ventimiglia, President, Atlas Digital There has never been a more important time to focus on your company’s online presence than now. As we move further into the digital age, hair restoration companies -- and the rest of the business world -- are shifting the focus of their marketing and advertising campaigns from traditional media to the internet.

By using the internet to find a hair restoration solution, potential clients can sift through a seemingly unlimited number of options and do as much research as they want before making a decision on a service or product. When it comes to improving or maintaining a personal image, people want to do business with someone they can trust, and online reviews help establish a level of trust before they walk in our door for the first time.
Why Reviews Are Important That 1-5 star rating system next to your company name on Google represents one thing -- your credibility. Are you changing people’s lives? Was your customer service unacceptable? You can build your credibility by building your Google reviews. Many people glance through reviews to give them a reason to buy a service or product. Having a good review rating can help sway a potential client who is on the fence about giving you their business. Your goal is to do everything you can to win that person over, and building your reviews can be one of the easiest ways to do that.
How To Build Your Google Reviews: Just Ask The most important thing you can do to build your reviews is to ask your clients to leave one for you. Send out an email to your client base and ask them to take a free minute and write a review. Make it easy for them by including a clickable link to your company’s Google reviews. You could even use a dedicated device in your waiting area where clients can fill out a review while they wait. I’ve even seen a company create business cards with step-by-step instructions on how to leave a review.
Incentivize This might be as important as asking for the review itself. You are more likely to get something if you are willing to give something in return. When asking for a review, offer a client a small discount on a service, a free product, or whatever you feel makes the most sense. For example, I’ve worked with a client that offered a free bottle of shampoo or conditioner in return for a Google review. That company increased its total number of reviews 5x in less than two weeks. While this might cost you a little bit of money to build your reviews up, it will more than pay for itself down the road with new clients.
How To Handle A Poor Review Nobody likes to see a poor review. Sometimes the review isn’t accurate or it came from somebody that never did business with you. The good thing
#trending about Google reviews is that it allows you to address your negative reviews and improve your first impression. You can respond directly to each review, which you should always do whether the review is good or bad. A simple thank you can go a long way when responding to a positive review. When somebody gives negative feedback, respond to it in a professional manner that shows potential new clients that you have good customer service and are willing to make things right if there are any issues. If you receive a poor review, don’t freak out. This is an opportunity to not only improve your image online but also to get feedback on your services and products and make improvements. Google reviews are one of the best ways to help you separate yourself from your competitors online. Having clients share their experiences and stories with how you’ve impacted their lives is stronger than anything you will say about yourself on your website or in your ads. Take the time to ask for reviews regularly and make it easy for people to leave a review and they will build up. You may be surprised at how much of an impact something as simple as a review may have in your sales process.

enhance your member profile to win new clients by Paul Albee, Managing Partner, ATS Design Group, Syracuse, NY Let’s face it, the vast majority of consumers prefer video content instead of reading. This has led to an explosion in online video. Video is one of your most powerful (and easy to produce) tools to engage, create trust, convert and generate new sales leads. In the world of hair replacement, potential clients can be nervous and hesitant to talk to salespeople. This is where video can be used to let them get to know you, create a sense of trust, and nudge prospects into becoming qualified sales leads. Unlike other online resources, statistics have generally shown that visitors who look for a hair loss specialist are in the later stages of making a decision to do something about their hair. They are farther down inside the “buying funnel.” So it only makes sense that, knowing this, members should maximize the content in their member profile to optimize the opportunity to attract and engage these more-qualified sales opportunities.

The ROI of Video Marketing Small business owners who have not embraced video as part of their marketing plan often ask “is video marketing really worth the effort?” Research shows that without a doubt, it is. In 2020, a survey of small businesses using video as an integral part of the marketing plan found: ▶ 89% of small business marketers said video gave them a good ROI. ▶ 83% said video helped them with lead generation. ▶ 87% said video has increased traffic to their website. ▶ 80% said video has directly helped increase sales. Video is one of the best ways to get up close to your prospects and convert them into loyal customers. Video can give them a real glimpse of who you are, why you are passionate about what you do, and why they should engage with you and your business. Given the enormous power of testimonial and explainer videos in the hair replacement industry, the more prospective clients know about you, your passion for helping them with their hair issues, and your willingness to share with them online, the more likely they are to pick up the phone and call, and the more likely you are to gain a valuable, long term client.
