About the Instructors

Skilled professionals schooled in early childhood and/ or elementary education teach the preschool program. Age-Appropriate Curriculum to develop a child’s love of learning.

Our play-based curriculum is provided in a safe, nurturing environment which allows the children opportunities to grow socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically, while developing their loving of learning. Children participate in a variety of activities everyday including art, music, movement, dramatic play, math, science, block play, story time and group discussions. We strive to prepare children for kindergarten. Our program is designed to give your child the tools and experiences they need to assure a positive transition from preschool to kindergarten. Some ongoing skills emphasized throughout our twoyear program are recognition and printing of first name with upper and lower case letters, naming basic colors and shapes, finding upper and lower cases letters when named, and reciting numbers 1-20.

Policies

• Children must be toilet trained; Pull-ups are not allowed. • Children in the 3-4 year old program must be 3 by September 1; Those in the 4-5 year old program must be 4 by September 1. Proof of age is required at the time of registration. Please provide a birth certificate for registration. • Children/staff must follow current safety guidelines.

ADULT LEAGUES

The Park District offers adult leagues at a variety of competitive levels to accommodate players and teams with a range of recreational interests and abilities. All players must be 18 years or older.

Registration

One player registers an entire team and all fees are due at registration. Register for your preferred level and, if that level is full, register for the waitlist. Do NOT register for the wrong competitive level to get into a league. If you are a player looking to join a team, please contact the league supervisor.

Bracketing and Scheduling

Once registration closes, brackets and season schedules are created. Final brackets are determined by a variety of factors including the number of teams registered and past season records. • We try our best to evenly assign game time slots and cannot accommodate special schedule requests. • Once schedules are finalized, we will email a schedule link, season information, and team roster/ waiver instructions to the captain.

Rosters and Waivers

Your team roster also serves as the individual waiver for all players and a new roster with all players’ signatures must be submitted before the start of your first game EVERY season.

Men’s Basketball Leagues

Games are played on Thursday evenings. Each team will play 10 regular season games, followed by a single elimination playoff based on regular season standings. Awards are paid out to the winners of the regular season and playoffs. (NW) Code League Day(s) Time 65607 A Th 6:30p-11p 65608 B Th 6:30p-11p

SWIM LESSONS What should I sign up for? Water Babies

6-24 months w/ 1 parent in water with baby. 30 min. Start exposing your baby to a body of water bigger than the kitchen sink now! This will help them better adjust to swimming lessons in a few years. We use songs and games to relax your baby and hopefully squeeze out a smile. We introduce holding positions so you are comfortable holding your baby in the water. Other adults are welcome to watch class from the sides of pool. This class is in our warm water pool.

Water Toddlers

2-4 yrs w/1 parent in water with child. 30 min. We add on to our Water Babies class format by introducing skills that will take place in our Junior Swim School classes. For the last 4 minutes, the instructor typically plays a game or we enjoy the kiddie slide and sprays. This class is in our Family Activity Pool. (pool with yellow slide). If your 3 or 4-year-old is comfortable/happy in a pool, consider signing them up for Junior Swim School which is with no parent in water to give them that extra push of independence in water.

Junior Swim School (JSS)

3-6 yrs. 3:1 ratio. No parent in water. 30 min. For most – it’s the first time a child enters a pool without a parent so we begin by making your child feel comfortable. This may look like simply focusing on getting the face and hair wet at first, which can be scary for some. Then progressing through supported floats, bobs, kick board use, and eventually swimming 3 yards with no assistance under water. No goggles. See ahpd.org/programs/swim-lessons/ for why we recommend no goggles at this level. There are three levels in JSS – Snails, Turtles and Jellyfish. If your child completes all Jellyfish skills, we can move them to our Swim School Program if that works for your schedule. This class is in our Family Activity Pool (the pool with the yellow slide).

18

Swim School

5-12 yrs 6:1 ratio. 30 min. A group environment to motivate your child. Children are evaluated on the first day and grouped with kids of a similar skill set. Our first level begins with correct face and body position, floats, and opening eyes underwater without goggles. Your child will then progress through levels where all the swim strokes are introduced and eventually working towards treading in deep water, dives, and flip turns. The instructor typically plays a game using swim school skills for the last 4 minutes. This class is in our lap pool. Diving well is used to complete some skills in our higher levels.

Private Swim Lessons will be conducted in a “pop-up” format. We tried this on a trial basis this past summer and it was a huge success. As we form our fall teaching team, you’ll be able to hand pick swim instructors to match their teaching strengths with your goals. Ages 3 through adult. • An à la carte experience • No session dates to worry about • One, 30 minute swim lesson with private one-onone attention • Sign up for one - or sign up for 10! It's up to you. No fussing with a six week session when you might be missing classes due to vacation or other activities • Tell your instructor what you want to work on and we'll make it happen • When you login to your household account, search "pop-up" • Keep checking back if you don't find a time that works for you. We're slowly adding more pop-up private swim lessons throughout SeptemberDecember times become available

Who is teaching my child?

Almost all of our instructors are currently high school or college students. Many are high school and college swimmers and quite a few are interested in a career specializing in early childhood and/or teaching. We aim for our swimming lesson program to be a highlight of your child’s school year and that is only possible because of our staff. For many, this is their first job and they are eager to succeed.

SWIM

TEAMS Arlington Otters

The Arlington Otters is a developmental swim team for the novice swimmer ages 6-14 years old. Practices will be offered at the Arlington Ridge Center in the winter season (November - February). This team is similar to the summer Interpark swim team program. The Otters build on the swimming skills learned in swim lessons, but are not considered a substitute for lessons. Each swimmer must be able to complete 25 yards of freestyle with the correct technique to participate. A skills test is held on the first day of practice. Any swimmer not meeting these requirements may be redirected to swim lessons.

Each registered swimmer must be able to complete 25 yards of freestyle with correct technique. A skills test is held on the first day of practice. Any swimmer not meeting these requirements will not be able to participate in the program. The Arlington Otters program builds on the swimming skills learned in swim lessons but is not considered a substitute for lessons.

Registrants will be given account access to our Otters website, where we communicate with parents, post schedules, reports times, and enroll for meets! Please be sure to register with a valid email address in order to receive important information.

For any questions, please contact Rob Gussy, Aquatics Supervisor, at (847) 577-3047 or rgussy@ahpd.org

Please register early, as the maximum number of swimmers allowed on the team is limited. Swimmers should register with the age group they will correspond with on December 1. (RG)
