n some industries in the United States, the role of Latin and black specialists is limited. This is the situation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, despite the fact that the country’s population is increasingly diverse. The issue also applies to women. This is shown by studies like the Pew Research Center’s 2021. In the case of Latin people, they represent 8 %, when they are 18 % in the overall picture of workers. In Philadelphia, for example, that proportion remains in the engineering area. To this must be added, as expressed in the vision of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), that the space for scientists, mathematicians, technology experts and engineers, where these communities are underrepresented, should be expanded. Comcast Cable is in this vein. “We are committed to investing in programs and partnerships that promote education, training and career development opportunities for people of color and women in the technology sector”, Loren Hudson, senior vice president and chief diversity officer, told AL DÍA. Like Comcast, there are other organizations that seek the diversity of people who study careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. To make these initiatives visible, the AL DÍA Leaders in STEM event was born. It is being held for the first time this year and seeks to promote the next generations to follow these paths of knowledge. The biopharmaceutical company GSK has this concern. In partnership with the Philadelphia Education Fund, it has a commitment for the next 10 years to help black and Latin students, men and women, overcome obstacles in their pursuit of careers in the aforementioned

ENGLISH fields. For that reason, they created Philadelphia STEM Equity. “We need diversity across our science and technology industries in Philadelphia to continue to drive innovation and solve today’s challenges”, said Kimberly Palladino, director of Collective Backbone at GSK.

Es lo que ocurre en ciencia, tecnología ingenierías y matemáticas, pese a que la población del país es cada vez más diversa. El asunto se traslada también a las mujeres. Así lo muestran estudios como el de Pew Research Center del 2021. En el caso de los latinos representa el 8%, cuando son el 18% en el panorama general de trabajadores. En esa línea está Comcast Cable. “Estamos comprometidos con la inversión en programas y asociaciones que promueven la educación, la formación y las oportunidades de desarrollo profesional para las personas de color y las mujeres en el sector tecnológico”, le dijo a AL DÍA Loren Hudson, su vicepresidenta senior y directora de diversidad. Como Comcast hay otras organizaciones que buscan la diversidad de las personas que estudian carreras en los campos de ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas. Precisamente, para visibilizar esas iniciativas, nació el evento AL DÍA Leaders in STEM, que se efectúa por primera vez este año y con el cual se busca promover a las próximas generaciones para que transiten esos caminos del conocimiento. La empresa biofarmacéutica GSK tiene esa preocupación. En asocio con el Fondo de Educación de Filadelfia, tiene un compromiso por los próximos 10 años para a los estudiantes negros y latinos, hombres y mujeres, a superar los obstáculos en su búsqueda de carreras en los campos ya mencionado. Para eso, crearon Philadelphia STEM Equity. “Necesitamos diversidad en todas nuestras industrias científicas y tecnológicas en Filadelfia para seguir impulsando la innovación y resolver los retos actuales”, contó Kimberly Palladino, directora de Collective Backbone en GSK.

hen Irene Contreras was a little girl, she always had a healthy curiosity. That curiosity was always supported by her mother, who gave her a piece of advice that would follow her throughout her life. “She said, ‘Irene, you have to ask questions because asking questions is the only way that you can have your own thoughts and your own criteria,’” said Contreras of her mother. Born and raised in Venezuela, Contreras became interested in journalism and took that advice with her.

Y le dio un consejo que la ha acompañado en su vida: “Irene, tienes que hacer preguntas porque haciendo preguntas es la única manera de construir tu propio criterio”. Nacida y criada en Venezuela, Contreras se interesó por el periodismo y aceptó el consejo.

UNA PERIODISTA ENCUENTRA SU CAMINO

A JOURNALIST FINDS HER WAY

In high school, Contreras had the opportunity to work with the school newspaper, interviewing people, covering stories that ranged from sports to academia. “I said, ‘Ok, this is something that I want to do. I see myself [doing this] the rest of my life,’” said Contreras. “I love to inform, ask questions and, of course, tell the truth,” she added. Her professional career as a journalist began in 1998, the same year Hugo Chávez became president of Venezuela. She reported on the many ways that the country was changing with him at the helm, unafraid of the consequences that would likely follow. One particular story about the passport situation in the country even got her escorted by military police. However, it didn’t stop her passion and motivation. “I wanted to be very vocal about what was happening in Venezuela,” said Contreras. “That’s why I wanted to become a journalist — I wanted to become a journalist to tell stories, tell the truth, support people and support communities.”

NAVIGATING A NEW COUNTRY

En la secundaria, Contreras tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar con el periódico de la escuela, entrevistar a la gente y cubrir historias que iban desde los deportes hasta la academia. “Me dije: ‘Vale, esto es algo que quiero hacer, me veo haciendo esto el resto de mi vida. Me encanta informar, hacer preguntas y, por supuesto, decir la verdad”, dijo Contreras. Su carrera profesional como periodista comenzó en 1998, el mismo año en que Hugo Chávez llegó a la Presidencia de Venezuela. Informó sobre los numerosos cambios que se estaban produciendo en el país con él al frente, sin miedo a las posibles consecuencias. isinformation is something no one can escape, but it’s especially bad for migrants traveling north to the U.S.-Mexico border. That’s according to a new study on misinformation among migrants put out on Wednesday, July 27 by the Tech Transparency Project that analyzed not only the kind of misinformation this vulnerable population was exposed to, but also how it influenced their trip to the U.S. and where they found the information. For it, more than 200 migrants were interviewed at opposite ends of their trip — one half in Guatemala, and another half at a border town on the U.S.-Mexico border.

The study found that while word-ofmouth was still the most popular mode to transmit information among migrants, they were also common targets of smugglers on platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. The smugglers use the platform to spread false information about the conditions on the journey to the U.S-Mexico border, current U.S. immigration law, and available opportunities once they reach the U.S., among other lies to entice their potential customers. In terms of engagement, human traffickers and “coyotes” — as they’re more colloquially known along the border — were found to use the platforms

But that’s not to say the migrants didn’t know they were being led astray in most cases. Most, when interviewed, said they had a hard time trusting anything in their desperate plight to reach the U.S. Per excerpts from the interviews conducted by the Tech Transparency Project, a majority knew the dangers of trusting information and people they found on social media professing to want to help, but felt obligated by their situations to wade through the dangerous information for the end result of a better life in the U.S. “I have nothing else to believe in,” one of the respondents was quoted as saying in the report.

Not only are entire families and individuals often led into extremely dangerous situations in the desert or while attempting to cross a raging river, but it’s also costly to make it all the way to the border under the belief of a certain policy existing, only to be deported. Some of those policies mangled or made up by smugglers include the stillin-place Title 42, which the Biden administration has tried and failed to repeal that allows the quick expulsion of migrants due to health emergencies, and the false claim that Border Patrol allows the entrance of pregnant women. “Because of the false information I received from the coyote, I was deported,” reads another testimony from a migrant interviewed for the study. “They deceived me by telling me that they were letting

or its entire 93-year history, the League of United Latin American Citizens has mostly stuck to its roots in terms of leadership. Founded in 1929 in Corpus Christi, Texas by WWI vets to combat discrimination against Hispanics in the U.S., the main population it served were Mexican-Americans. Over the years, the organization expanded to include and serve all U.S. Hispanic populations, but very few have been elected to be president of the organization at one of its annual conferences. This year, that reality looked to change, as the organization held its first in-person conference and election since 2019, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In addition to there being a Puerto Rican challenger to current President Domingo Garcia in Juan Carlos Lizardi, the island has also seen an explosion of LULAC councils (chapters) opening in the last year. Per LULAC, there are now at least 343 councils in Puerto Rico, compared to just 54 that were recorded last year.

A RIGGED ELECTION?

On the surface, that sounds like a major success for LULAC on the island, and a major boost to membership. However, as Houston LULAC 688 member David Contreras laid it out to NBC News’ Suzanne Gamboa, such an explosion in the number councils could have ulterior motives. It all comes down to who can vote at the organization’s annual conference. “We saw it to some extent at the Texas convention, on a smaller scale,” said Contreras of a past LULAC annual conference. “So, they’ll bring in people to the convention to vote, people who are or have not been active in LULAC.”

Este año, esa realidad parecía cambiar, ya que la organización celebró su primera conferencia y elección en persona desde 2019, en San Juan de Puerto Rico. Además de haber un retador puertorriqueño al actual presidente Domingo García en Juan Carlos Lizardi, la isla también ha visto una explosión de consejos (capítulos) de la Liga de Ciudadanos Latinoamericanos Unidos (LULAC, por sus siglas en inglés) en el último año. Según LULAC, ahora hay al menos 343 consejos en Puerto Rico, en comparación con los 54 que se registraron el año pasado.

¿UNA ELECCIÓN FRAUDULENTA?

A primera vista, eso suena como un gran éxito para LULAC en la isla, y un gran impulso a la membresía. In the case of current president Domingo García, who is from Texas, he was elected in 2018 at the conference held in nearby Phoenix, Arizona. For Lizardi, he is from New York, but of Puerto Rican descent. With the conference happening in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he looked poised to be elected as the next LULAC national president if Texas Judge Tahira Khan Merritt of the 162nd District Court in Dallas County hadn’t stepped in and ordered it not to proceed.

here are many industries that have a glaring underrepresentation of Black, Hispanic and other diverse individuals among its workforce. Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) are among those industries. A 2021 Pew Research Center study noted that Black and Latinx workers represent 9% and 8% of the STEM workforce, despite making up 12% and 18% of the U.S. adult workforce, respectively. The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), the largest Hispanic STEM association in the nation, has worked for nearly 50 years advocating for more Hispanic representation in STEM, and particularly, in engineering. The Philadelphia chapter noted the glaring nature of the 10% gap between the STEM fields and the overall workforce for Hispanics.

AN EYE TOWARD MORE REPRESENTATION

With the U.S. population simply growing more and more diverse, the workforce should start to reflect that diversity. There are various other organizations across the region, and nationwide, that are working diligently to increase the level of diversity among individuals entering into careers within the STEM fields. One such organization is GSK, the biopharma company that unites science, technology and talent to produce innovative vaccines and specialty medicines to prevent and treat disease. In 2020, the organization began a new 10-year commitment in partnership with the Philadelphia Education Fund to help Black, Latinx and female students overcome obstacles to their pursuit of careers in the STEM fields through the creation of the Philadelphia STEM Equity. To this organization, the importance of diversity is clear. “We believe that diversity and inclusion promote strength and resilience — not only for GSK as a business but also for the communities where we live and work,” said Kimberly Palladino, Collective Backbone Director at GSK told AL DÍA. “We need diversity across our science and technology industries in Philadelphia to continue to drive innovation forward and solve today’s challenges,” she added. Beyond the racial component of the lack of diversity, there is also the gender component. It can be agreed that the lack of women within the STEM fields is a result of the lack of opportunities afforded to young girls, perpetuating stereotypes that manifest at an early age and often follows them as they start their careers. “We use an engaging, intensive and multi-year approach for our work in STEM to keep girls from falling back on the persistent stereotypes that seek to dissuade them, especially girls of color, from pursuing exciting and lucrative STEM careers,” said Girls Inc., staff.

The organization recently launched Project Accelerate, a new initiative that supports the entry of young women into positions of leadership by driving cultural change towards equity in the workplace, and by ensuring young women’s educational attainment and skill development to facilitate compelling career trajectories. Coded by Kids also aims to bring awareness to STEM opportunities — particularly in the tech field — at a younger age. “We are building the next generation of underrepresented tech leaders and startup founders,” said Coded by Kids Development Manager Melanie Bermudez. Through its teachings, Coded by Kids provides students with fundamental skills tech in tech. “Technology relates to so much in the world now and even if these young people do not aspire to be technologists, it will allow them to participate in this new tech and innovation economy,” added Bermudez. “We want students to understand that the opportunity for advancement and earning in tech is boundless and they can use their skills and creativity to build whatever they can dream of.”

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION

The work can be amplified only by living proof — the young generation of students who are being actively influenced by various STEM professionals and organizations. AL DÍA had the opportunity to speak to three incoming high school sophomores who have taken an interest in the STEM fields. For MiaLynn Patrick and Ashley Rodriguez Peralta, their interest started when their physics teacher introduced them to an engineering program at Esperanza College. “She told us to go because she really wanted us to have that experience,” said MiaLynn. “We both went and now we’re really into it.” Ashley is highly interested in how life heavily revolves around physics. Both are well aware of the underrepresentation of girls and people of color in these fields, and believe diversity in STEM is very important. “When people think of engineers and people in STEM, people always think of

white men,” said MiaLynn. “And during our time in school, we were really pushed to kind of change the ratio.” She noted that the program at Esperanza featured a lot of women, notably Hispanic women, who shared some of the same struggles and experiences as an underrepresented group in the field. To both, more diversity will lead to more inspiration to the younger generation to follow a path into the STEM careers. “I feel like diversity is vital for the future,” MiaLynn said. “We definitely want engineers, and we definitely do need a lot more people in STEM, and I feel like people shouldn’t just limit that as a man’s job.” AUGUST 10 - 17, 2022

Ashley added, “We really need people from different backgrounds to talk to these future generations to see they should not be afraid to do whatever they want.” She noted that the underrepresentation comes from a place of privilege, something she feels she has as someone who attends a Catholic school with teachers who instill confidence in her. Fion Mack, another high school student who shared some of her thoughts, compared diversity in STEM to diversity on television. “You will look up to those people because that’s like a model you can look up

to. That’s like seeing you doing that certain job,” she said. “And I feel like misogyny and stereotypical views also play a role on how there’s like a lot of white, straight men in the STEM field and other minorities like Native Americans, African Americans, and Hispanics don’t have the same privilege as them,” Fion added. As the three high schoolers look ahead to the future, each of them have ambitious and lofty goals for themselves. In the short-term, Ashley and MiaLynn both have plans to join the robotics club during the next school year. MiaLynn has many interests, and plans to pursue various paths, before ultimately deciding where she will settle. “I really want to take psychology, but I also want to do something in law and criminal justice… and I’m really into STEM,” she said. This coming school year, she plans to enroll in a number of math and science courses, and continue sharpening her skills. Ashley has dreams of attending an Ivy League school in New York, with many ambitious goals herself. “I want to study mechanical engineering, I want to study business, I want to study computer science… because I’m really open and I really like to do many things in my life,” she said. In preparation for college, Ashley already has her classes selected for her junior and senior years and has her sights set on the next chapter of her journey. As the child of immigrants, Fion hopes to take advantage of the opportunities she has that her parents weren’t afforded. “Since they had to overcome all these obstacles just to find a job that would support the family, I feel like it really plays a big role in pushing us,” said Fion. In her case, she is keeping all her options open, including enrolling in a community college prior to transferring to a university.

Long-term, each student has their individual plans to continue their education beyond high school, with goals of happiness, stability and impact.

A FIRST-TIME EVENT

The 2022 AL DÍA Leaders in STEM event is the inaugural STEM-based event AL DÍA has ever hosted. The goal is to both recognize the work, while also motivating and encouraging the next generation of diverse individuals to chart their own personal paths forward within STEM. The importance of shining a light on this topic cannot be overstated, both from an organizational standpoint and from the individual one. An organization like PECO — a supporting sponsor for the event — has taken this kind of initiative very seriously. “We are proud of our long-standing commitment to the advancement of individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and ideas as we know it is one of the most crucial investments we can make to strengthen our workforce, economy, and society,” said Mayra Bergman, vice president communications at PECO. It’s the company’s belief that emphasizing diversity, equity and inclusion leads to positive results for the company and its employees. The upcoming event is especially sure to have a positive impact on the students who will be in attendance. “Events like this give people our age access to different ideas of what they can do,” said MiaLynn. “And I think seeing people their age, race and ethnicity is really important because you get to see someone that’s similar to you explore the field or experience those things,” added Fion. CON MIRAS HACIA UNA MAYOR REPRESENTACIÓN

Dado que la población estadounidense es cada vez más diversa, la mano de obra debería empezar a reflejar esa diversidad. Hay diversas organizaciones en la región, y en todo el país, que trabajan con diligencia para aumentar el nivel de diversidad entre las personas que se incorporan a las carreras dentro de los campos STEM. Ashley le apasiona entender cómo la vida gira en gran medida en torno a la física. Ambas son muy conscientes de la escasa representación de las mujeres y de las personas de color en estos campos, y creen que la diversidad en STEM es muy importante. “Cuando la gente piensa en ingenieros y en personas en STEM, siempre piensa en hombres blancos”, dijo MiaLynn. “Durante nuestro tiempo en la escuela, realmente nos presionaron para cambiar de opinión”. También señaló que en el programa de Esperanza había muchas mujeres, sobre todo hispanas, que compartían algunas de las luchas y experiencias como grupo infrarrepresentado en el campo. Para ambas, una mayor diversidad servirá de inspiración a las generaciones más jóvenes para seguir el camino de las carreras STEM. En palabras de Mialynn, “Creo que la diversidad es vital para el futuro; definitivamente queremos ingenieras, y definitivamente necesitamos mucha más gente en STEM; estas áreas no deberían estar limitadas a una preferencia de hombres”. A lo anterior, Ashley añadió: “Necesitamos que personas de diferentes orígenes hablen con estas futuras generaciones para que vean que no deben tener miedo de hacer lo que quieran”. Señaló que la infrarrepresentación proviene de un lugar de privilegio, algo que ella siente que tiene como alguien que asiste a una escuela católica con profesores que le infunden confianza. Fion Mack, otra estudiante de secundaria que compartió algunas de las ideas de Ashley, comparó la diversidad en STEM con la diversidad en la televisión: “Admiras a esas personas porque es como un modelo al que puedes admirar. Es como si te vieran haciendo ese determinado trabajo. Y creo que la misoginia y los estereotipos también influyen en que haya muchos hombres blancos y heterosexuales en el campo de STEM, mientras que minorías como los nativos americanos, los afroamericanos y los hispanos no tienen los mismos privilegios”. or Ingrid Rojas Contreras, magic runs in the family. Her grandfather Nono was a renowned ‘curandero,’ a community healer gifted with what the family called “the secrets”: the power to talk to the dead, predict the future, treat the sick, and move the clouds. And as the first woman to inherit “the secrets,” Rojas Contreras’ mother was just as powerful. Mami delighted in her ability to appear in two places at once, and she could cast out even the most persistent spirits with nothing more than a glass of water. For Rojas Contreras, however, this legacy had always felt like it belonged to her mother and grandfather. Until one one day, while living in the United States — where her parents moved when she was a teenager to escape the violence of the 1990s in Colombia — she suffered a head injury that left her with amnesia. As she regained partial memory, her family was excited to tell her that this had happened before. Decades ago, Mami had taken a fall that also left her with amnesia. When she recovered, she had gained access to “the secrets.” Driven by this strange coincidence and by the desire to rediscover her family’s history, Rojas Contreras decided to embark on a trip to Colombia with her mother and sisters in 2012 to disinter Nono’s remains. Finding out more about that old man always dressed in immaculate white to whom people went to ask for it not to rain before a soccer match or to banish ghosts, led her to start writing what would end up being her first book of memoirs: The Man Who Could Move Clouds, published in English in the U.S. last July. It will be translated into Spanish in September as El hombre que movía las nubes. “This is a memoir not just of my life, but of two generations before me, my grandfather who was a curandero, and my mother who became a curandera after him. As a storyteller, I loved the idea that there were stories begun in my grandfather’s life, and which only resolved in my lifetime, long after he was gone. It’s a story as much about healers as it is about healing,” explained Rojas Contreras in an email interview with AL DÍA News. The author, who currently resides in San Francisco, California, says she chose the non-fiction genre because her grandfather, who had the ability to move clouds and other inexplicable phenomena as everyone claimed, would have lost verisimilitude in a made-up novel. Besides, she added: “The research for the book interested me greatly. It involved

ENGLISH interviewing family and strangers about ghosts and the sorts of unexplainable things no one is sure how to talk about.” With Mami as her unpredictable, stubborn, and often amusing guide, Rojas Contreras traces her lineage back to her Indigenous and Spanish roots, uncovering the violent and rigid colonial narrative that would eventually break her mestizo family into two camps — those who believe “the secrets” are a gift, and those who are convinced they are a curse.

ADOPTING A NEW LANGUAGE

Rojas Contreras was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, but as a teenager her family decided to escape the political violence in the country and emigrate abroad, first to Venezuela, then to the United States, where she studied at university. Even though Spanish is her mother tongue, in her teenage years, she started to write in English. It was right after the family left Colombia. “I felt that the event of leaving everything and moving to Venezuela, warranted a new language from me. I wrote strange poems and stories with a rudimentary understanding of English. I wouldn’t take myself seriously until much later,” she said. “Later, when I moved to the U.S., I found that being in a land that wasn’t my own and writing in a language that wasn’t my own, was an explicit way to write without the cost of immigration.” Her debut novel, Fruit of the Drunken Tree (published in Spanish as La fruta del árbol borracho), was the Silver Medal winner in First Fiction from the California Book Awards, and a New York Times Editor’s Choice. Her essays and short stories have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, The Believer, and Zyzzyva, among others. She lives in California, and although she misses Colombia very much, she feels that even if she returned, “it wouldn’t be the same, there would be some sort of impassable estrangement.” z

Su abuelo Nono era un curandero de renombre, dotado de lo que la familia llamaba “los secretos”: El poder de hablar con los muertos, predecir el futuro, tratar a los enfermos y mover las nubes. Y su madre, Mami, la primera mujer de la familia en heredar “los secretos”, se hizo curandera después de él. Sin embargo, para Rojas Contreras ese mundo místico y encantador de curanderos y adivinadores no consideraba que era el suyo, hasta que un día, cuando tenía unos 20 años y ya vivía en los Estados Unidos se golpeó la cabeza en una caída, lo que le provocó una amnesia temporal. Tras recuperar la memoria, su familia le contó emocionada que décadas atrás su madre había sufrido una caída similar que también le había provocado amnesia temporal. A partir de entonces que había tenido acceso a “los secretos” y se había hecho curandera. Impulsada por esta extraña coincidencia, y por el deseo de redescubrir la historia de su familia, en 2012 Rojas Contreras decidió embarcarse en un viaje a Colombia junto a su madre y hermanas para desenterrar a su abuelo Nono, ese hombre vestido siempre de blanco inmaculado a quien la gente acudía para pedirle que no lloviera antes de un partido de fútbol o para desterrar fantasmas. El propósito era empezar a escribir lo que acabaría siendo su primer libro de memorias: The Man Who Move Clouds, publicada en inglés en EE.UU el pasado mes de julio, y que saldrá traducida en español en septiembre (El hombre que movía las nubes). “No se trata solo de las memorias de mi vida, sino de dos generaciones anteriores a la mía, la de mi abuelo y la de mi madre, que se hizo curandera después de él. Como narradora, me encantaba la idea de que hubiera historias que empezaron con la vida de mi abuelo y sólo se resolve-

rían en mi vida, mucho después de que él se hubiera ido. Mi historia no va solo de curanderos, sino también de curación”, explica Rojas Contreras en una entrevista por email con AL DIA News. Sus padres se mudaron a Estados Unidos en los años noventa. Reside en San Francisco (California) y dice que eligió el género de no ficción porque el hecho de que su abuelo tuviera capacidad para mover las nubes y otros fenómenos inexplicables, como afirmaba todo el mundo, hubiera perdido verosimilitud en una novela inventada. Además, “la investigación para el libro me interesó mucho. Consistió en entrevistar a familiares y desconocidos sobre fantasmas y ese tipo de cosas inexplicables de las que nadie sabe cómo explicar”. Con Mami como su imprevisible, obstinada y a menudo hilarante guía, Rojas Contreras rastrea su linaje hasta sus raíces indígenas y españolas, descubriendo la violenta y rígida narrativa colonial que acabaría dividiendo a su familia mestiza en dos bandos: los que creen que “los secretos” son un regalo y los que están convencidos de que son una maldición.

ADOPTAR UN NUEVO IDIOMA

Rojas Contreras nació y creció en Bogotá (Colombia), pero siendo adolescente su familia decidió escapar de la violencia política en su país y emigrar al extranjero, primero a Venezuela, y luego a Estados Unidos, donde estudió en la universidad. A pesar de que el español es su lengua materna, coincidiendo con la huida de Colombia empezó a escribir en inglés. “Sentí que el hecho de dejarlo todo y mudarme a Venezuela justificaba un nuevo idioma por mi parte. Escribí extraños poemas y relatos con una comprensión rudimentaria del inglés. No me tomé en serio hasta mucho después”, explica. “Una vez en Estados Unidos -añade- descubrí que estar en una tierra que no era la mía y escribir en un idioma que no era el mío, era una forma explícita de escribir sin el coste de la inmigración”. Su primera novela, Fruit of the Drunken Tree (publicada en español como La fruta del árbol borracho, editorial Impedimenta), fue la ganadora de la medalla de plata en Primera Ficción de los California Book Awards. Sus ensayos y relatos cortos han aparecido en el New York Times Magazine, The Believer y Zyzzyva, entre otros. na Romani is known in Cartagena de Indias as Mulatta Rosa. She is a woman who, with the talent of her hands, has taken a craft tradition beyond imagination. Wherever she goes, she is easily recognized, as she usually wears a crown of bright flowers, large earrings and various bracelets. Everything is made of beads. The weaving of beads is a typical indigenous handicraft practice. It consists of joining many colored beads with a transparent thread to give them a specific shape, as an accessory or decoration. Ana, a public accountant by profession, has been dedicated to this craft for more than six years. She is one of the most recognized artisans in the city thanks to her innovative approach to each product. The beginning of her path as a craftswoman came through Barbies, since she dreamed of having her first original doll. When she achieved it, she devoted herself to customizing several outfits that caught the attention of her friends, who began to make special orders for her. “I started making dresses only for my friends’ daughters, but word to mouth made people aware of what I was doing, and the business began to grow”, Ana told AL DÍA. Dolls are still an important part of Ana’s life, but most of her time is dedicated to Mulatta Rosa, a venture that has brought out her most creative and colorful side through traditional practice. “Mulatta Rosa is my full-time trade”, mentioned the artisan, who also emphasized the value of her work, as it not only allows her to express herself through the different pieces, but also to the clients who wear her products. In Cartagena, it is common to see traditional designs made of beads, like necklaces, earrings or woven bracelets. However, Ana not only makes these products, but imbues new designs to

A los lugares que llega se le reconoce con facilidad, pues suele llevar una corona de flores llamativas, aretes grandes y diversas pulseras. Todo está hecho en mostacillas. El tejido en mostacillas es una práctica artesanal típica de los indígenas. Consiste en unir muchas pepitas de colores con un hilo transparente para darles una forma específica, como accesorio o como decoración. Ana, contadora pública de profesión, se dedica a este oficio desde hace más de seis años. Es una de las artesanas más reconocidas de la ciudad gracias a su forma de innovar con cada producto. El inicio de su camino como artesana llegó a través de las Barbies, ya que soñaba con tener su primera muñeca original. Cuando lo logró, se dedicó a personalizar varios trajes que llamaron la atención de sus amigas, quienes comenzaron a hacerle pedidos particulares. “Comencé haciendo vestidos solo para las hijas de mis compañeras, pero se fue regando la voz de lo que yo hacía y fue creciendo”, contó Ana a AL DÍA. Las muñecas siguen siendo una parte importante en la vida de Ana, pero la mayor parte de su tiempo se lo dedica a Mulatta Rosa, un emprendimiento que ha sacado su lado más creativo y colorido a través de la práctica tradicional. “Mulatta Rosa es mi oficio de tiempo completo”, mencionó la artesana, quien además hizo énfasis en el valor que tiene su trabajo, pues no sólo le permite expresarse a través de cada pieza, sino también a las clientas que llevan sus productos. he swearing of Gustavo Petro as President of Colombia, on August 7th, left images of what multicultural participation in a political event means. About one hundred thousand people gathered in and around Plaza de Bolívar in Bogotá to attend the rise to power of the first leftist president in the history of the South American country. The central ingredient was the gathering of people from all regions of the country and the development of an extensive cultural agenda, five hours before the swearing-in ceremony. People from different places arrived, each with their own cultural particularity. Afro-descendants, indigenous communities, farmers and people from the urban sector were in the sight of national and international media. To this was added the formation of the new Government, with an Afro-Colombian Vice-President (the first in the history of that high office) and the presence of Government representatives from countries of all continents. As part of the American continent, Colombia is a result of migration from different latitudes that joined the natives. z

Firsttime homebuyers, in particular, are being squeezed out of the market – due to the fact they don’t have equity or an additional boost from the sale of an existing property. Despite those challenges, buying a home may not be as out of reach as you think. We sat down with Tanyika Rickard and Latosha Taylor, Community Home Lending Advisors at Chase in the Philadelphia and New Jersey markets, to discuss how to navigate the mortgage process, what resources are available, and how increasing mortgage rates can im-

Q: How do increasing mortgage rates impact prospective homebuyers? Tanyika Rickard: Mortgage rates have nearly doubled in the last six months – from 3% in 2021 to more than 6% in 2022 – making it increasingly difficult for many Americans to purchase a home, especially those on a limited income. That difference is significant by any measure, but it could result in hundreds of dollars added to your monthly payment and thousands of dollars over the life of your loan. Despite a challenging homebuying environment with high demand and historically low inventory, purchasing a

You may be able to move to a lower rate even without the float down option, but it may require additional fees. Additionally, your lender may have particular requirements, such as being at a certain stage of the loan process, for the customer to be eligible to lower their rate.

The other thing to keep in mind is the ability to move quickly in this environment is critical. It’s important to do your research on lender-backed resources available to you, such as Chase’s Closing Guarantee. The program offers buyers peace of mind knowing that they can close on their new home without delay or receive compensation that can be put toward additional costs. ARP Pennsylvania State Director Bill Johnston-Walsh released the following statement in response to the passage of the 2022-23 Pennsylvania state budget. “On behalf of our 1.8 million members, AARP Pennsylvania appreciates the steps taken by the Governor and General Assembly to distribute American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds in the 2022-2023 state budget. After a lifetime of hard work, Pennsylvania’s seniors deserve to live with independence, security, and dignity. The availability of common-sense options will enable them to age in place in their homes and communities. Understanding that increasing property taxes are most burdensome to residents who are older and on fixed incomes, AARP Pennsylvania advocated for the $140 million investment in the state’s Property Tax Rent Rebate Program, which brings much-needed relief at a time when high inflation -- including the rising prices of gas, prescription drugs and food -- is hitting older and disabled adults right in the pocketbook. Additionally, the allocation of $125 million for a new Whole Home Repairs Program was also supported by AARP Pennsylvania to assist those who want to remain at home but lack the finan-

On this point, our advocacy has been clear: residents and their families deserve to know that any licensed facility they go to will have adequate and safe staffing, and taxpayers have the right to expect value for the billions of dollars invested into longterm care. ARPA funds did provide a historic opportunity to offer older Pennsylvanians with options to live in their homes and communities when health and financial limitations make that harder. While encouraged by these ARPA investments, we will continue advocating for Pennsylvania’s decision makers to do more to expand home services, reduce service waiting lists and strengthen the paid longterm care workforce, so direct care staff can earn a living wage with benefits.” z

Having to learn a new language and become accustomed to an entirely new culture and workforce was very difficult for her. However, she was able to find valuable mentors who have helped her along the way. From working in social media and communications, Contreras has refined her skills, supported by her background as a journalist. She recently became the new Senior Director of News and Media Relations for Jefferson University Hospitals. “The good thing about being a journalist is that you can practice,” said Contreras. “Even though I’m not working with communities directly, I'm still a journalist.”

In her role, she still has the opportunity to write press releases, and in some cases, interview individuals. “I’m trying to continue practicing journalism everyday… now in corporate and nonprofit,” she noted. When Contreras reflects on her journey as a journalist, and as an immigrant in Philadelphia, she hasn’t lost sight of the steps it took to get to this point. Her goal and commitment remains to support others, and promote inclusion. “My responsibility is to make sure that all people that come to this city feel included,” she said. “And open doors and pave the way for other immigrant professionals in the city.”z

longtime LULAC board member Elsie Valdes, who is also a major pro-statehood activist. In response to the election halt, Lizardi equated it to voter suppression. On García’s end, he opposed tying LULAC to the statehood movement, and the organization has remained neutral on the issue of Puerto Rico’s status. “We have no issue with any position the people of Puerto Rico take through a fair and open election. However, LULAC has always been non-partisan,” he said in a statement. An election cannot be conducted until at least Aug. 12, when a hearing is scheduled to hear arguments in the case. z

he inauguration ceremony of Gustavo Petro, Colombia’s first leftist president, took place on August 7th in downtown Bogota, under the usual protocols. But in an unprecedented event, it was accompanied by a popular party in the surrounding area and several towns. It was a clear dose of what will be the tone of the new Government. Petro will face several challenges that will represent a turning point in Colombia’s domestic and foreign policy. First, implementing the peace agreement with the extinct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), signed in 2016. The right-wing outgoing government of Iván Duque (2018-2022) put the brakes on it and abandoned to their fate millions of Colombians besieged by the violence of armed groups that took the place of what was the oldest guerrilla group in the continent. Nor did it implement policies to bring the rural sector out of backlog and poverty. Added to this is the search for peace with other groups and the challenge of improving the living conditions of at least 22 million Colombians (44 % of the population) living in poverty and extreme poverty. As a backdrop, there is also the international policy, which will have three central aspects. One, a multilateral strategy, opposed to that of the Duque government. It will imply a relationship with all countries, putting respect for sovereignty and self-determination first. It implies, and Petro has already announced it, the reestablishment of diplomatic and commercial relations with Venezuela, Colombia’s historical and natural partner, which reached the worst degree of deterioration during the outgoing government. The rupture with Nicolás Maduro implied an unprecedented economic cri-

ENGLISH sis on the Colombian side of the border. Venezuela was Colombia’s second largest trading partner after the United States, a status it hopes to regain. The second key issue connects to bilateral relations with the United States, which are 200 years old and were seriously injured by the support for Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy by the Democratic Center, former ruling party in Colombia. Now, Petro’s government will have Luis Gilberto Murillo, an Afro-Colombian leader with excellent relations in the United States, as its ambassador in Washington. Murillo’s tasks include improving relations, promoting the evaluation of the bilateral Free Trade Agreement, making fundamental changes to counter-narcotics policy and U.S. support to the implementation of the peace agreement and negotiations to deactivate other illegal armed groups. In addition, having Washington at the forefront of the vision to address the effects of climate change, with actions like the promotion of energy transition and the effective protection of natural resources. The third has to do with the integration of Latin America based on an axis of allies, headed by Mexico, Honduras, Colombia, Chile, Cuba, Bolivia, Argentina and Brazil (if Lula wins the elections). This would give life to a regional bloc that speaks to the world about the needs of its population, but also assumes leadership on environmental issues and the search for peace. The tasks are on the table, and for the United States it would be an opportunity to strengthen its ties with one of its most strategic allies in the region. The paradox is that it will be with a leftist government, unthinkable in other times.z

Pero en un hecho inédito estuvo acompañada de una fiesta popular en los alrededores y en varias poblaciones. Fue una dosis clara de lo que será el tono del nuevo gobierno. Petro tendrá a sus espaldas varios desafíos que representarán un viraje en la política interna y externa de Colombia. En primer lugar, implementar el acuerdo de paz con las extintas Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) firmado en el 2016. El gobierno saliente del derechista Iván Duque (2018-2022) le puso freno y abandonó a su suerte a millones de colombianos asediados por la violencia de grupos armados que ocuparon el lugar de la que fuera la guerrilla más antigua del continente. Y tampoco puso en marcha políticas para sacar al sector rural del atraso y la pobreza. A esto se suma la búsqueda de la paz con otros grupos y el desafío de mejorarles las condiciones de vida a por lo menos 22 millones de colombianos (44% de la población) en niveles de pobreza y de pobreza extrema. Como telón de fondo está también la política internacional, que tendrá tres aspectos centrales. Uno, una estrategia multilateral, opuesta a la del gobierno de Duque. Implicará una relación con todos los países poniendo por delante el respeto a la soberanía y a la autodeterminación. Implica, y ya Petro lo ha anunciado, el restablecimiento de relaciones diplomáticas y comerciales con Venezuela, socio histórico y natural de Colombia, que llegaron al peor grado de deterioro durante el gobierno saliente. La ruptura con Nicolás Maduro implicó una crisis económica sin

precedentes en el lado colombiano de la frontera. Venezuela era el segundo socio comercial de Colombia después de Estados Unidos, estatus que se espera recuperar. El segundo asunto clave conecta con las relaciones bilaterales con Estados Unidos, que cumplen 200 años y que estuvieron seriamente lesionadas por el apoyo a la candidatura presidencial de Donald Trump por parte del Centro Democrático, que fue el partido de gobierno en Colombia. Ahora, el gobierno de Petro tendrá a Luis Gilberto Murillo, líder afrocolombiano y con excelentes relaciones en Estados Unidos, como su embajador en Washington. Murillo tiene entre sus tareas mejorar las relaciones, promover la revisión del Tratado de Libre Comercio bilateral, hacerle cambios de fondo a la política antinarcóticos y el apoyo de Estados Unidos a la implementación del acuerdo de paz y a las negociaciones para desactivar otros grupos armados ilegales. Además, tener a Washington en primera línea de la visión de enfrentar los efectos del cambio climático, con acciones como el impulso a la transición energética y la protección efectiva de los recursos naturales. El tercero tiene que ver con la integración de América Latina a partir de un eje de aliados, encabezado por México, Honduras, Colombia, Chile, Cuba, Bolivia, Argentina y Brasil (si Lula gana las elecciones). Esto le daría vida a un bloque regional que le hable al mundo de las necesidades de su población, pero que también asuma un liderazgo en el tema medioambiental y en la búsqueda de la paz. Las tareas están sobre la mesa y para Estados Unidos sería la oportunidad de fortalecer sus vínculos con uno de los aliados más estratégicos en la región. La paradoja es que será con un gobierno de izquierda, impensable en otros tiempos. z
