Prefácio
I include myself. I also want to express my thanks to two families who helped me during the team stays in the city of Santa Helena, Maranhão: that of Dona Neilse S. Peixoto and that of Dona Rosa. I must also mention Mr. José Edikson F. Nogueira (Zezinho, in memoriam) and Saulo Arouche. I want to highlight the work of the members of the Archeology Laboratory (LARQ) in the research: the museologist Hélder Bello de Mello and the collaborators and interns Karen Cristina C. da Conceição, Raquel de Lima Silva, Flaviomiro Mendonça da Silva, Tayse Handreyza Abreu Mendes, José de Ribamar Júnior, Elton Menezes, Gabriel Serra, Mayara Dias, Marilene Banhos, Yasmim Silva, Rafaela Cantarino, Rhayanna Diniz, João Manoel Santos, Carlos Magno P. da S. Júnior and Carlos Eduardo de S. Alves. Our current institutions - the University of Illinois Chicago and the Federal University of Maranhão, São Luís, - are gratefully acknowledged for their long-term administrative support for our work. In addition, Roosevelt must thank the National Museum of the American Indian in its former guise as the Heye Foundation, the American Museum of Natural History, both in New York, and the Field Museum in Chicago, where she worked at different stages of her projects in the Amazon. Her research was also made possible by the institutional collaboration of the Museu Paraense Emilio Goeldi, through the offices of Jose Seixas Lourenco, Guilherme de La Penha, Adelia Rodrigues de Oliveira, Alicia Duran Coirolo, and the Federal University of Para in Belém, Brazil, through Denise P. Schaan and Marcondes Lima da Costa, and the great help of the municipalities of Santarém and Monte Alegre in the State of Para. Many government agencies and non-profit foundations gave major grants to our work. The National Science Foundation, CNPq, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Endowment for the Arts, the MacArthur Foundation, Fulbright and the WennerGren Foundation for Anthropology repeatedly gave essential support to Roosevelt’s projects. Navarro thanks CNPq, Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa e ao Desenvolvimento Tecnológico do Maranhão (FAPEMA) and Fulbright Commission. We both warmly thank the Brazilian agency IPHAN for its support for the permits for the research and for financial support for publications.
