AMAZONIAN INDIAN SCIENCE CONTRIBUTES TO BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES A ciência indígena amazônica contribui para as ciências biomédicas

One drug plant Ayahuasca vine, (Banisteriopsis caapi), vine resembles the anaconda. In Northwest Amazonia, its hallucinogenic juice is considered Woman Shaman’s breast milk. The milky juice, taken for trancing in healing rites, is thought restorative and protective by Amazonian shaman.

Though missionaries suppressed native religion, drugs from indigenous religion are widely used in treatment of illness and pain, mental disorders, and for hunting and fishing. Many remain to be investigated, but indigenous savants need to be able to continue their work. Suppression of their societies must stop for everyone’s benefit.
