PETER JULIAN
Welcome
AFCC Staff: Kevin Shanley, Marianne Williams, Julie Wake, Wendy O’Keefe
hat happens when you invite 15,000 of your closest friends to a night of music, entertainment and arts? You get the Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea. For me, the event serves as the figurative exclamation point on what has been a wildly exciting year at the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC). This night encapsulates what is best about Cape Cod and the arts. In years past, I came to the Pops, like you, as a fan. This year, I’m coming at it from an entirely new perspective: as Executive Director of the organization responsible for putting on the show. It’s a responsibility I have embraced, understanding what the Pops means to Cape Codders and tourists, many of whom plan their vacations around this iconic event. Whether you are attending for the first or the 31st time, we are truly grateful. We hope this year’s concert serves as a lasting memory of your summer on Cape Cod. With that in mind, we haven’t reinvented the wheel. We are continuing our strong relationship with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. What has changed – as it does every year - is our guest conductor. Usually, it’s one recognizable name. Or maybe two. This year, our conductors are known only by the generic title under which they perform: Blue Man Group. Yes, the Pops has gone blue! And we’re proud of it. I invite you to learn more about Blue Man Group on pages 31 and 33 of this brochure. I’m not sure what to expect from them at this year’s Pops. But isn’t that the beauty of the arts? They work best when they surprise us, filling us with a wonder of the unknown, taking us to places we’ve never been before. At the AFCC, that’s our goal. Not only do we want to highlight the amazing art that exists on Cape Cod, but we want to fund initiatives that enable those of all ages to soar to new heights and to go on unique, creative journeys through artistic ventures that help strengthen our community. In the following pages, you will find details of how we do just that, using our resources to ensure the arts remain a vital piece of the wonderful tapestry that is the Cape. With your support, not only of the Pops, but of the AFCC, you will help ensure that the tapestry continues to grow and evolve into something beautiful.

A Letter From Our Board Chair
Bruce Bierhans, Cleber Stecei, and Julie Wake
hank you for attending this year’s Pops By the Sea. I hope that you’ll agree that this year’s Guest Conductor selection, Blue Man Group, is reflective of the innovative and exciting changes taking place at the AFCC. To be sure, this has been a year of transition. I was elected Chair in April 2015, and Julie Wake was hired as Executive Director last September. We have also added new support staff, including our Development Director, Wendy O’Keefe. My personal goals for the organization have been threefold: 1) have the AFCC function as a true foundation and focus on development and enhanced opportunities for grant recipients; 2) optimize the advocacy and political advocacy roles of the organization; and 3) be truly innovative with respect to programming and education. In addition, we are focused on creating new collaborations with businesses and arts and cultural organizations across the Cape. Please take the time to look through today’s program to see many of the successful initiatives that have been implemented in the past year. I would like to thank Julie and our entire staff, our board of directors, our many volunteers, our individual and business donors, and our Patron Program supporters. Without their commitment and support, the spectacular event you are experiencing today would not be possible. By being here with family and friends, you prove that Arts Do Matter and that they contribute to the cultural and economic vitality of Cape Cod.

About Us WHAT WE DO The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC) began in 1987 as a small nonprofit with a lofty, but attainable vision: create a thriving arts and cultural scene on Cape Cod that fuels innovation and economic growth and strengthens our community. We do this through our mission to support, promote and celebrate the arts and culture of Cape Cod to sustain a vibrant, diverse and strong arts community.
OUR GOALS The AFCC has three specific goals: To fund artistic and cultural initiatives that reflect the vitality, diversity, and history of the arts on Cape Cod; To improve and increase the Cape’s reputation for arts and culture by building a strong arts community network that benefits from sharing information and resources and creates a unified presence in the marketplace; and To advocate at the local, state and national levels for more awareness on the impact the Cape’s creative economy has on our region and beyond. For almost 30 years, the AFCC has administered a grant program through which we have awarded over $1.5 million to individual artists, art organizations, educational institutions and art and cultural projects that have had a direct, positive impact on our community.
Rise & Shine Program at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod
FUTURE INITIATIVES As we approach our 30th anniversary, we are stepping up our fundraising activities by implementing an aggressive development plan that includes increased yearly giving, major gifts and grants to enable us to increase our financial contributions to the local arts community. Part of our mission has been focused on funding artistic and cultural initiatives that reflect the vitality, diversity and history of the arts on Cape Cod. Going forward, we not only want to continue that focus, we want to expand our reach so we can distribute larger grants that have a bigger impact on this place we call home. MEMBERSHIP AND COMMUNITY The AFCC’s artist membership is specifically designed to support individual artists, cultural centers, fine performing art groups and businesses, and cultural and historical establishments, such as museums and historical societies, by giving them the support, publicity and networking capabilities they need to thrive here. Our members benefit from ArtsCapeCod.org, a comprehensive regional industry website built to promote their artistic and cultural activities.

The Creative Genius Behind “Pops on the Beach”
Cleber Stecei Allyson Brainson of Citizens Bank and Julie Wake of the AFCC unveil “Pops on the Beach”
hen Cleber Stecei’s “Pops on the Beach” was auctioned off at our Spring Soirée at the end of May, it was an emotional moment for the painter who was commissioned to create this year’s Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea artwork. Every artist dreams of moments like this: an acknowledgment that their talent is appreciated by others. With Stecei’s Pops piece, there was never any doubt. “The Arts Foundation is so fortunate to work with Cleber. From the moment we saw his work we knew he was the right artist for this year. His style of painting is mysterious, magical, and captivating,” says AFCC Executive Director Julie Wake. Stecei’s inspiration for the painting was to “portray the best of a summer Cape Cod day, which landed the musicians and audience on a pristine beach.”
Originally from Marinaga, Brazil, Stecei came to the Cape, and its pristine beaches, nearly 20 years ago. A decade later, he made another transition — from painting as a hobby to painting as a profession. His reaction to “Pops on the Beach” was a mixture of emotions, ranging from relief to fulfillment. The fact that it has been positively received by so many is the icing on the cake. “It is very satisfying,” he says. Ever the artist, the 40-year-old Stecei refuses to stop here, using his experience with the Pops as motivation to continue perfecting his craft. Last month, he unveiled 20 new pieces as part of a collection of landscapes during a one-man show at Addison Art Gallery in Orleans. With Stecei, the best is yet to come as he continues to tap into his creativity. “For me, art is everything,” he says. “I’m always thinking about art, so for me it’s part of my life.”

or retired Barnstable Police Department Lt. David Cameron, the Pops by the Sea has been a longstanding tradition. What started as a professional endeavor — Lt. Cameron’s introduction to the event was as an officer working the Pops detail — soon evolved into a labor of love. Lt. Cameron’s bond with the signature summer event only grew as he served on the Pops Steering Committee for over 10 years. In the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings and prior to the 2013 Pops concert, Lt. Cameron and Barnstable Police Sergeant Michael Damery went to Boston, working with the FBI, Massachusetts State Police, and the Boston Police Department to ensure that those performing at and attending the concert would have a safe and enjoyable time. Audiences familiar with the Pops may have noticed a recent tradition: our Honorary Chair is led to their table at the start of the evening by a bagpiper and drummer. Behind those pipes is none other than Lt. Cameron with his trusty sidekick, Katie Zanello, on drums. Lt. Cameron is a member of the Colum Cille Pipes & Drums. Lt. Cameron is the proud father of two children: Andrew is a scientist at Biogen in Cambridge, and Katie is a guidance counselor at Nauset Regional High School. A

AFCC Winter Art Exhibit Inspires Students to Dream
udrey Christensen is only seven, but the West Villages Elementary School first grader already has her future mapped out. Despite her diminutive stature, Audrey has big dreams, proudly proclaiming, “I want to be an artist when I grow up.” She has narrowed those dreams down even further – “I want to be an illustrator,” she says, again with a confidence belying her age. Perhaps her confidence comes from experience; Audrey mentions she has written a book about a magic butterfly. Or perhaps on this day in early February, Audrey is simply inspired, having just finished up a half-hour tour of the Cotuit Center for the Arts where 48 works of art were on display, each conveying the theme “Balancing Act.” 2016 was the ninth year the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC) held its Winter Arts Exhibit to showcase established and emerging artists while providing motivation for students like Audrey. And that is why the annual exhibit is such an important event for the AFCC. It is much more than just a show. “It is really about connecting students with feelings and helping them to convey their emotions,” says AFCC Executive Director Julie Wake. For over a month, students from throughout Cape Cod had a chance to peruse the exhibit, which included photographs; paste, oil and acrylic paintings; and statues made out of aluminum, clay and stoneware. For many children, Wake says, this is their first chance “to connect with art, experience a gallery exhibit and meet a working artist.” That world of firsts, Wake continues, will hopefully lead to a foundation of respect and passion for the arts which is vital to their personal growth. “We know that art transforms students into
20
engaged learners and active thinkers,” Wake says, something the AFCC has been able to do in concert with the Cotuit Center for the Arts on an annual basis for nearly a decade. “Together, we’re connecting students with local artists and art so that maybe they’ll begin thinking about their future and maybe they’ll want to be artists themselves.”
BECOMING ACTIVE LEARNERS
The program has grown to the point that students like Audrey and her classmates are not only spectators, but active learners. A workshop accompanies the tour, allowing children to create their own art project tied to the theme of the exhibit. “I think it’s great to expose kids, especially young kids, to art. This is a very manageably-sized exhibit, 48 pieces, with all different kinds of media represented here,” says Michelle Law, the curator for the exhibit. “I hope this gives them the view that art is not necessarily just crayons and pencils. It can be most anything you find in the world.” The contingent from West Villages saw this firsthand when they stopped at Carl Lopes’ vibrant piece, “The Theory of Everything”, which featured a telescope and microscope against a shiny silver background. There docent Gregory Williams quizzed 20 first graders, asking the children, “What is this material?” “Glitter,” one girl responded. “Cardboard,” said a classmate. “Wrapping paper,” added a third, prompting Williams to reply, “I think that is what it might be.” Upstairs, the children met one of the artists, Alice Nicholson Galick, who created an ode to nature on the inside and outside of a Pops by the Sea 2016

rectangular folding box that featured etchings and mono prints of birds and fish against the backdrop of the sky and the sea. On the outside, a shell of a dead crab was affixed to the top of the box and a small branch inside, used to create a miniature table. “This is very extraordinary,” one young boy told Galick. These types of sincere, appreciative comments could be found throughout the tour if you just listened. “It is really beautiful,” seven-year-old James Benners said when asked about the exhibit. And that may be why it is so important for the AFCC to expose students of all ages to works like this. As Linda Warde, a first grade teacher at the West Villages Elementary School put it: art “gives us a feeling of creativity and creativity is love. Isn’t that what we all want?” Art or creativity or love, that is what Galick discovered many years ago when she was a first grader just like those at West Villages. “I made a piece of artwork that my art teacher put in a show and after that I decided at age six that I was going to be an artist,” she tells the students. “And I did it all the way through high school and college and graduate school. And I taught art. I taught elementary art for well, altogether, 30 years, but I taught high school and junior high as well. I taught all age groups.” Today, she has shed the teacher label, but she is still an artist. Galick makes art, she says, “because I don’t think I could breathe without doing it. It’s part of my life.” And it all started all when she was the same age as Audrey Christensen. artsfoundation.org

The Patron Program NURTURING ART LOVERS ON CAPE COD
On the surface, the Muhlebachs may not seem like art lovers. They both work in the medical field — Bethany as a clinical research consultant and Stephan as a cardiologist. But delve a little deeper and you’ll find that their careers don’t define their interests. Bethany is a photographer. Stephan is an avid reader. And they both love music; it’s a constant in their Sandwich home where they are raising their two children — eight-year-old Ella and sixyear-old Henry. As recent patrons of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC), the family is now able to extend their passion for all things creative a step further. “I like the idea of being supportive of the arts in our community,” Bethany said when asked why her family became patron members of the AFCC. “Even in our schools, with budget cuts, there is so much being taken away from the art programs there. Having young kids and wanting the arts to be a part of their lives, I see the Arts Foundation being able to fill in gaps in programs that might not be available to them in the future.” The Muhlebachs are like many of us on Cape Cod. They understand that arts matter.
BENEFITS OF THE PATRON PROGRAM
Whether you are an individual or a business owner, the AFCC’s Patron Program is a great way to show your support for the arts on Cape Cod. Money raised from the program goes directly back into the community, funding scholarships and art education for local students, as well as grants for projects that expose those of all ages and abilities to the beauty, power and wonder of the arts. In return, you will be connected to a community of like-minded individuals who enjoy the theater, live music, fine art, film and more, knowing that these opportunities can only serve to strengthen this place we call home. As a patron, you will enjoy VIP access to special events, including: Winter Art Exhibit: Mingle with the artists behind the work at next year’s opening night reception at the Cotuit Center for the Arts. All 2017 pieces will center on the theme of “Personal Space”. This event always inspires, giving attendees a glimpse at the creative talent that abounds in our little corner of the state. Pops by the Sea Commemorative Unveiling: Every year, one
piece of fine art serves to capture the essence of AFCC’s Pops by the Sea concert. The unveiling gives you a first look at that piece and direct access to the artist behind it. And There’s More:
Patrons are also given behind-the-scenes opportunities to connect with local artists and art institutions on Cape Cod. Often, patrons are the first to know about cool, fun events happening in the community. And with access to hundreds of creative types throughout the region, the Patron Program is ideal for businesses looking for support in customizing an event or project tailored to their needs.

The Pops Goes Blue! “With this appearance, we’re emphasizing the joyful side, the humor,” Screnci adds. “We think of the Blue Man character as an everyman, holding the mirror up to ourselves and our culture for the past 25 years. He helps us laugh at ourselves a little bit and see the world differently. The goal is to celebrate our curiosity, our creativity and need for community.”

ow do you celebrate your 25th anniversary? If you’re Blue Man Group, you release a new album (“Three”), publish a first-ever book (“Blue Man World”) and head to Cape Cod, not for vacation, but to bring your production to a place it has never been. “A big part of the organization’s mission is about creating a new context and having the Blue Man character shown in a different light,” says Jonathan Screnci, resident general manager of the Boston-based production of Blue Man Group. That light will have a distinct Cape flavor to it when Blue Man Group takes the stage at the Hyannis Village Green to serve as guest conductors for the 31st Annual Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea Concert. While Cape Cod represents new territory for Blue Man Group, it is familiar with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, having performed with it in 2007 during Boston’s Fourth of July celebration on the Esplanade. This year’s audience should be prepared for the unexpected. Unlike its in-house productions at the Charles Playhouse, Screnci promises, “what you’ll be seeing on Cape Cod will be something completely different” that will include a surprise, special guest.

Behind the Blue: Jason McLin ot only is this a landmark year for Blue Man Group, it’s a significant one for Jason McLin, who will turn 40 in September. Before that, he will travel to Cape Cod as one of the three Blue Men who will serve as guest conductors at this year’s Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea concert. A native of Indianapolis and a graduate of The Theatre School at DePaul University, McLin has spent the past 14 years performing with Blue Man Group, first in Chicago, then in Toronto and the past five years in Boston. Admittedly, some of the job has become rote; putting on the blue paint, which takes roughly 30 minutes, for instance, “is always far less glamorous than it sounds,” he says. Another notable fact about McLin? He’s not bald. “But I am balding now,” he points out, laughing that, “I still have to wear a bald cap which is adding insult to injury. There are many Blue Men with healthy flowing locks, though I no longer happen to be one of them.” While there is a routine to his work, don’t think for a second that McLin is not passionate about what he does. For him it’s a job only in title. “It is perfect,” he says. “I feel creatively and artistically fulfilled.” He is eager to share his passion for what he does with Pops audiences on August 14. “I’m so ecstatic about it.

t’s the middle of May in Yarmouth. In just a few weeks, tourists will arrive in droves, delighting in the beauty of the region and the excitement that summer offers. But in this community’s modest-sized food pantry, it’s a much different picture. Here people make their way down narrow aisles, collecting groceries they need to survive. “It takes a lot of courage to come to a food pantry,” the non-profit’s Executive Director Susan Martin says. “When people come in here, they need food.” This is where people go when they have nowhere else to turn. At present, it has over 5,050 registered clients, including 2,300 families; 30 percent of its clients are children. Yes, they need the basics, which the Yarmouth Food Pantry is providing, but they require so much more to retain a sense of normalcy and to bring some joy into their lives. Once a year, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod plays a part in that equation by providing 1,500 free tickets to local needy families to attend the Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea concert. Thanks to the generosity of the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation, those tickets are made available to more than 30 nonprofit health and human service agencies, like the Yarmouth Food Pantry, who distribute them to their clients.

THE POWER OF THE POPS
In her role as Executive Director of the AFCC, Julie Wake understands the importance of connecting all people to the arts. “Art has the power to transform lives, helping to build hope and well-being,” she says. Offering an afternoon of escape and entertainment can serve as a wonderful respite for those who have experienced significant trauma. These are people like those Independence House serves, adults and children throughout Cape Cod who have been affected by domestic or sexual violence. “We have a number of clients who would not necessarily be able to go to such a fantastic show like the Pops,” says Donna Giberti, the development and marketing director for Independence House. Talk to any of the nonprofits whose clients benefit from the program and you’re likely to hear similar words of appreciation to those that WE CAN Executive Director Andi Gesner shared: “We work with a lot of single moms who have kids and this concert is the kind of thing so many of them just don’t have the funds to do on their own.” Making these tickets available to the women WE CAN is supporting allows them to be a part of “an event that is such a big, signature Cape Cod event. And really, they feel a part of this community where there are all kinds of people. That’s what’s so great about this program.” “It is with great pleasure that Eastern Bank supports the mission of the Arts Foundation by providing tickets to their biggest fundraiser of the year to the health and human service agencies on Cape Cod. We hope that many will get the opportunity to not only enjoy the day but also be inspired by the music.” - Rana H. Murphy Senior Vice President, Eastern Bank

Nurturing Cape Cod’s Future Writers Grant Recipient: Cape Cod Writers Center
ometimes all children need to achieve success is a little inspiration and a boost of confidence. At the Cape Cod Writers Center, a group of aspiring writers is getting a healthy dose of both thanks to a program aimed at giving students the tools needed to express themselves on paper. The program, Tomorrow’s Writers Today, has been in existence since 2011 and exposes Cape Cod students between the ages of 12 and 17 to published authors, ranging from poets to journalists to novelists, who provide them with guidance on the writing process. “We offer students individualized attention to improve and enhance their literary skills and introduce them to careers in writing, journalism and communication arts,” says the center’s Executive Director Nancy Rubin Stuart. The students often use those skills immediately as they contribute to their school’s newspaper, yearbook, literary clubs, and poetry slams. More than that, she says, the workshop, held two to three Saturdays a year, serves as a nurturing environment where each student receives the type of hands-on instruction they need to blossom. That’s ultimately what the AFCC hopes all children on Cape Cod have the opportunity to experience, and is a major reason we have funded Tomorrow’s Writers Today. It helps pave the way for their future success.

Filling the Artistic Void Grant Recipient: Sandwich Arts Alliance
hen the Sandwich Community School closed three years ago, it left a void in the town’s artistic scene. Last year, that void was filled by the newlyformed Sandwich Arts Alliance, a nonprofit aimed at strengthening the collective voice of individual artists in the community while providing children and adults with an outlet to tap into their creativity. Understanding the importance of that mission, the AFCC provided the fledgling Arts Alliance with a grant for its Winter Classes in February. Those classes ranged from a writing workshop that gave local youth an opportunity to create their own children’s book to a one-day block printing session for teens to a printmaking class for adults. There were additional opportunities for those of all ages to dive headfirst into acrylics, watercolors, drawing and digital photography. “The AFCC’s funding made it possible to offer all of these classes and pay for marketing and space rental,” says Joanne Westerhouse, president of the Arts Alliance. Her organization’s offerings are a way to ensure Sandwich remains a vibrant community through the arts. “The arts are a way of enriching people’s lives,” she says, especially for children. “I think it inspires creativity when you use the arts at an early age. It’s a great way to reach kids.”

Exposing the youth to arts Grant Recipient: Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod
ince 2008, the AFCC has exposed over 900 children on an annual basis to the power and the beauty of the arts through its support of the Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod. That’s more than 7,200 children in less than a decade, proof that even a small amount of funding can have a major impact on shaping the region’s next generation. The AFCC grant helps fund the club’s Fine Arts program, which provides hands-on opportunities for kids between the ages of six to 18 in everything from music to fine arts (acrylics, pencil and ink, pastels) to theater to movie making. Along with its practical benefits, the program also features an academic component, teaching the Cape’s youth about the history and styles of art. For the club’s Executive Director, Ruth Provost, the program is not an option. It’s a necessity. “Arts are clearly important,” she says. “They help kids focus better in school and expand their imagination. I’m all about statistics, and the research clearly shows that an involvement in the arts has a positive impact on kids’ lives.”

Giving a Voice to All Grant Recipient: Cape Cod C.A.N.!
here do we turn in life’s difficult moments? Erin Bressler turned to art. “It’s very therapeutic,” she says. “I love art. It is just peaceful and calming.” Art, she says, is what helped her through a brain tumor and the multiple surgeries she was forced to endure at the age of 4. “I’ve been tumor-free for 20 years,” she says, proudly, inside the community room at the LIFE (Living Independently Forever, Inc.) community in Hyannis this past May. And art continues to play a significant role in her life; she makes beaded crafts that include pins and wine stoppers that she sells at the Hyannis Art Shanties overlooking the harbor during the summer. She donates a portion of the proceeds to support charities that help children suffering from brain injuries and other chronic illnesses. On this day, Bressler is focused not on her own personal art, but on a collaborative one that is being funded, in part, by the AFCC. She is one of 136 participants from roughly a dozen different organizations that are contributing to three mosaic murals being dubbed “The Natural Wonders of Cape Cod.” The pieces are expected to be unveiled in September and will be displayed at the Cape Cod National Seashore Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham and the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce’s Visitors Centers in Centerville and Wareham. The project is being organized by Cape Cod CAN!, a nonprofit that exposes people with disabilities, like Bressler, to the beauty and wonder of the arts. Giving individuals the opportunity to express themselves through creativity, says Cape Cod CAN!’s Managing Director James Hurley, “provides them an outlet where they can actually shine.”
40
GIVING A VOICE TO ALL
That is just the start of what AFCC Executive Director Julie Wake views as a bigger role for the arts on Cape Cod. “We are seeing the arts being integrated in a wide variety of healthcare and community settings for therapeutic, educational, and expressive purposes,” she says. “The arts are a great connector and path to healing and selfexpression, serving as the perfect medium where people, regardless of their backgrounds, can show the world who they are.” At LIFE, a small group spent a few hours doing just that under the watchful eye of Cape Cod CAN!’s art director Tessa D’Agostino. Individually, they glued buttons, beans, rice, and an array of different-colored sea glass onto pieces of paper that will be combined to make something beautiful. “It is good to know this will be displayed where a lot of people can see it,” says Elisabeth Bowman. While the mural will give others joy, she spoke to what creating art gives her: “It can often, when you really get into it, take you to places that you have never been before.” “It can also help you relieve stress because you’re giving yourself that time for self-reflection,” Tessa adds. Tessa, who also oversaw the individual pieces of the mosaics being created at the LIFE campus in Mashpee and the Riverview School in Sandwich, admits she is continually amazed by the talents of those she teaches. “They are artists and a lot of times they aren’t seen as that,” she says. The AFCC knows that giving people opportunities to display their talents is important. Art is the mechanism for doing so. “Art is such a healthy outlet for expression,” Tessa says. “When I get to see them create different projects and have a voice they wouldn’t normally have, that is very inspiring.”

Turtle Power
Grant Recipient: Falmouth High School Ceramics Department
n many respects, today’s high schools mirror our data-driven world; the focus is on results, a high stakes, pressure-filled environment where test scores are king. But it’s not so in Corine Adams’ ceramics arts class at Falmouth High School. There students tap into another part of their mind, and body, where creativity rules. Thanks to the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod’s support, this past spring sophomores, juniors and seniors were able to use their imagination to tell the story of the endangered leatherback sea turtle. It started with the funding needed to pay for the materials that allowed 45 students to embark on an adventure that combined science with art with fundraising, all while connecting them with the larger community outside their school. Adams says that grants, like the one the AFCC supplied to her class, are necessary “to do bigger projects” where there can be trial and error that “we’re not able to do with my regular budget. We are really grateful for all the support we can get and the Arts Foundation has always been generous to us.” The next step was for the students to immerse themselves in the world of the leatherback. That is where Dr. Kara Dodge of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) served as an invaluable resource, meeting with students in January to talk about her TurtleCam project, which involves tagging the animals and
documenting their ocean journey through the use of a GoPro attached to an autonomous underwater vehicle that follows their movements. And then the fun began. Students were given free rein to create their own piece of art depicting the creatures. Some, like senior MaryAlyce Bevacqua, 17, made actual sculptures of turtles (three to be exact). Some, like junior Kerry Shanahan, 17, made something a little more utilitarian — a turtle clock. And some, like senior Emily Freedman, 18, made a hanging jellyfish which happens to be a leatherback delicacy. Other works included plates, vases and cups. “All the artwork is completely different,” Adams says. The pieces were set to be displayed and auctioned off at the end of April at WHOI to benefit Dr. Dodge’s research. AFCC Executive Director Julie Wake praised the wellroundedness of this artistic enterprise. Not only does it teach students about these rare animals, but about real scientific work being done in their backyard to better understand their behavior. And it allows the students to play a role in future efforts to protect the leatherback sea turtle. “They are actively thinking about a bigger world than their classroom,” Wake says. “They are thinking about how to save something and about how these turtles make an impact. And their work is going to be seen. It is going to raise money so there’s this full circle of building empathy for these animals using creative thinking.”
Falmouth High School art teacher Corine Adams gave each of her students the freedom to create their own turtle-themed ceramic piece. Senior Hannah Callahan, 18, made a plate adorned with the seafaring creature

Lockhart and the Pops: A Winning Formula
he passage of time leaves us with fond memories of past experiences. This is exactly how Boston Pops Orchestra conductor Keith Lockhart views the nearly two decades he has spent leading the AFCC’s seminal event, Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea. “It’s a magical experience, a real New England experience, and I’m honored to be a part of it,” he says. With his longevity at the Pops, Lockhart acknowledges that some performances stick out more than others. Like the year guest conductor Jim Belushi did a standing back flip and the splits on stage. It was purely improvisational, something the comedian “didn’t tell us” he was going to do, Lockhart laughs. Then there was the year guest conductor Ed Asner “was a lot saltier than Mr. Grant,” Lockhart recalls, in reference to the fictional character the actor played on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” “I remember thinking, ‘I hope he won’t be telling the same jokes he was telling backstage’,” Lockhart says. “He didn’t, which was good.” Another year, Lockhart made his way into the crowd, urging the audience to belt out the lyrics with him. “I plopped down next to Ted Kennedy and he had a sing-along with me,” Lockhart says. Lockhart is confident there will be special moments like this when Blue Man Group joins him and the Boston Pops Orchestra onstage at the 31st annual Pops. “Part of the fun is they are pretty unpredictable,” Lockhart says of this year’s guest conductors. “You never know quite what is going to happen with them.”
And that is the beauty of the Pops for Lockhart and his crew. “There is no substitute for the power of live music,” he says. “It’s an amazing thing being able to connect with several thousand people in an event like this.” The concert serves as a beacon to what art can achieve when done right. “Music and the arts add depth. They add the context. They add the why,” Lockhart says. “We are so obsessed with the when and the how much that the arts encourage us to look deeper beyond the easy answers and tap into the creativity of the human spirit.”

ops audiences will recognize the gifted Laura Bernanti from her recurring role as Alura Zor-El in CW’s “Supergirl.” The Tony-award winning actress will lend her talents to this year’s concert as a guest performer, singing several Broadway favorites with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Bernanti comes to Cape Cod in the midst of her latest solo show, “Tales from Soprano Isle,” which features songs from her career blended with humorous anecdotes about her experiences in theater and television. Three years ago, Bernanti received praise for her performance as Elsa Schrader in NBC’s “The Sound of Music Live!” (she may reprise that performance at this year’s Pops). Her other credits include guest starring on ABC’s “Nashville” and recurring roles on CBS’s “The Good Wife” and Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie.” Her accomplishments extend well beyond the screen and into theater where she has been nominated five times for a Tony Award since first taking to the Broadway stage at the age of 18. She was nominated most recently for her role as Amalia Balash in the Broadway hit “She Loves Me.” She won a Tony in 2008, receiving critical acclaim for her revelatory portrayal of Gypsy Rose Lee in “Gypsy” directed by Arthur Laurents.
Her other Broadway credits include “Nine” with Antonio Banderas; starring as Cinderella in “Into the Woods”; and her debut as Maria in “The Sound of Music”, playing opposite Richard Chamberlain. Recently, her hilarious portrayal of Melania Trump on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” went viral, garnering rave reviews from online audiences.

Kelly and Mark Skala at the Pre-Pops Spring Auction
Thank you Mark Skala!
y day, Mark Skala serves as the Director of Marketing and Community Relations at the Bank of Cape Cod. But during his free time, Skala contributes much more to the community by donating his time and energy to making Cape Cod the special place that it is. He is a board member of the YMCA Cape Cod, a volunteer on the advisory board of A Baby Center, and a member of the Hyannis Area Chamber of Commerce marketing committee. Over the years, he has also lent his talents to St. Francis Xavier Preparatory School in Hyannis. During the past decade, Skala has worked to strengthen the regional arts scene as a board member and former board president of the AFCC. He was instrumental in getting the AFCC its new space on Main Street, and has dedicated countless hours to making Pops by the Sea one of the landmark events of the summer on Cape Cod. Recently, Skala made the decision to step down from his position on the board, leaving behind a proud legacy that was committed to the arts and cultural scene on the Cape. “Mark has a real energy and passion, not only for the arts, but for our community and for life,” AFCC Executive Director Julie Wake says. “He’s one of those

rare people who understands the value in giving back. The Cape is lucky to have him.” Current board chair Bruce Bierhans agreed, highlighting Skala’s dedication to the AFCC. “Leadership of nonprofit organizations requires commitment, time and the ability to make decisions, often difficult ones,” he says. “It’s clear that Mark excelled on all fronts.” Fellow board member Rana Murphy had similar words to share about Skala’s contributions, leading the AFCC through significant change and growth. Through it all, Murphy says “his passion, creativity and energy were instrumental in bringing the Arts Foundation to a new level. His connection to the community, his advocacy for the arts and his keen understanding of the arts as an engine to our economy on the Cape were key drivers to the growth of the AFCC. Mark has a sense of humor that is unparalleled and a leadership style that is creative and engaging. We truly thank him for his years of service.” On behalf of the entire board and the AFCC staff, we echo Murphy’s statements: thank you for all you have brought to our organization, the arts on Cape Cod and our community.

He is a founding member of the pop/folk group, Tripping Lily, where he composed and performed original music for over a decade. After taking a brief hiatus from performing, his made his mission to make the mandolin a more accessible instrument. With three business partners, Alex is the co-owner of West Bend Music in Dennis Port, where he teaches all stringed instruments, piano, voice, and songwriting. Becrelis believes that education fosters an appreciation for making music in both children and adults. Teaching has inspired Alex to create his latest collection of work which will focus on original music composed on mandolin, for mandolin, with the songs not only being geared toward audiences for their listening pleasure, but at educators for use as a teaching aid.

Create the Vote
ne of the aims of the Arts Foundation is to have a voice at the legislative table, advocating for the arts to ensure they remain a key component of our community. In collaboration with MASSCreative, we have taken steps to strengthen our advocacy through the Create the Vote Campaign, highlighting the important role that arts and culture plays on Cape Cod. The initiative encourages candidates for political office to develop dynamic cultural policies and to lead by example by convening community leaders on issues related to the arts and by attending art and cultural events. The campaign also engages in broad-based public education by holding public meetings with candidates, artists and cultural leaders while also publicizing each candidate’s response to a questionnaire about the arts, leading to a more informed citizenry at the polls. “Arts intersect with all of the important issues we discuss during political campaigns such as education, the economy, public health and safety, and how to create communities in which we want to live, work and play,” said Wilson. “We are excited to hear from the candidates for state representative and state senator on Cape Cod and hear their vision for the role that arts and culture can play here.”
AFCC Executive Director Julie Wake touted the importance of Create the Vote campaign as it creates awareness to the impact of the arts and provides a platform for Cape Cod’s art community to outreach with local, regional, state and federal leaders on the need for a healthy, vibrant artistic scene. “Arts and culture are as fundamental to our regional identity as sand dunes and salty air. We are a community that truly values the enormous contribution the arts make to Cape Cod,” she said. “That is why we are so excited to be part of MASSCreative’s Create the Vote campaign because it helps us strengthen the arts through an open dialogue with political candidates and our legislative leaders.” Both Wake and Matt Wilson, Executive Director of MASSCreative, were eager to see how Create the Vote enhances arts on Cape Cod. The campaign has witnessed success in other parts of the state; in 2013, candidate Marty Walsh pledged to create a cabinet level position for the arts when running for Mayor of Boston. He later fulfilled this promise by hiring Julie Burros as Boston’s Chief of Arts and Culture.

Pops by the Sea 2016
All Night Long: an ‘80s Sing Along ALL NIGHT LONG Well my friends, the time has come; Raise the roof and have some fun. Throw away the work to be done. Let the music play on (play on, play on, play on). Everybody sing; everybody dance. Lose yourself in wild romance. We’re going to party, karamu, fiesta, forever. Come on and sing along. All night long, all night, all night long, all night. All night long, all night, all night long. All night. All night. All night. All night. All night. All night. LIVIN’ ON A PRAYER We’ve got to hold on to what we’ve got. It doesn’t make a difference if we make it or not. We’ve got each other and that’s a lot for love. We’ll give it a shot. Whoa, we’re halfway there. Whoa, livin’ on a prayer. Take my hand, we’ll make it, I swear. Whoa, livin’ on a prayer. Whoa, we’re halfway there. Whoa, livin’ on a prayer. Take my hand, we’ll make it, I swear. Whoa, livin’ on a prayer. GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN The phone rings in the middle of the night. My father yells “What you gonna do with your life?” Oh, Daddy dear, you know you’re still number one. But girls, they wanna have fun. Oh, girls just want to have… That’s all they really want some fun When the working day is done, oh, girls they want to have fun. Oh, girls just want to have fun. Girls girls wanna have fun. Girls, wanna have fun. WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN All the Japanese with their yen The party boys call the Kremlin And the Chinese know (oh way oh) They walk the line like Egyp-tian All the cops in the donut shop say, “Way oh way oh, way oh way oh.” Walk like an Egyptian. Walk like an Egyptian.

GHOSTBUSTERS Ghostbusters! If there’s something strange in your neighborhood, Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters! If there’s something weird and it don’t look good Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters! I ain’t ’fraid of no ghost. Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters! JUMP I get up, and nothing gets me down. You got it tough. I seen the toughest around. And I know, baby, just how you feel. You got to roll with the punches to get to what’s real. Ah, can’t you see me standing here? I got my back against the record machine. I ain’t the worst that you’ve seen. Ah, can’t you see what I mean? Ah, might as well jump. Might as well jump. Go ahead and jump. Go ahead and jump. WALKING ON SUNSHINE I used to think maybe you loved me, now, baby, I’m sure. And I just can’t wait till the day when you knock on my door. Now every time I go for the mailbox, gotta hold myself down. (No, no, no). ‘Cause I just can’t wait till you write me you’re coming around. (Oh yeah) Now I’m walking on sunshine, Whoa. I’m walking on sunshine, Whoa. I’m walking on sunshine, Whoa and don’t it feel good! WE ARE THE WORLD We are the world, we are the children. We are the ones to make a brighter day, so let’s start giving. There’s a choice we’re making, we’re saving our own lives, it’s true, We make better days, just you and me. We are the world, we are the children. We are the ones to make a brighter day, so let’s start giving. There’s a choice we’re making, we’re saving our own lives, it’s true, We make better days, just you and me.
