Nurturing Cape Cod’s Future Writers Grant Recipient: Cape Cod Writers Center
ometimes all children need to achieve success is a little inspiration and a boost of confidence. At the Cape Cod Writers Center, a group of aspiring writers is getting a healthy dose of both thanks to a program aimed at giving students the tools needed to express themselves on paper. The program, Tomorrow’s Writers Today, has been in existence since 2011 and exposes Cape Cod students between the ages of 12 and 17 to published authors, ranging from poets to journalists to novelists, who provide them with guidance on the writing process. “We offer students individualized attention to improve and enhance their literary skills and introduce them to careers in writing, journalism and communication arts,” says the center’s Executive Director Nancy Rubin Stuart. The students often use those skills immediately as they contribute to their school’s newspaper, yearbook, literary clubs, and poetry slams. More than that, she says, the workshop, held two to three Saturdays a year, serves as a nurturing environment where each student receives the type of hands-on instruction they need to blossom. That’s ultimately what the AFCC hopes all children on Cape Cod have the opportunity to experience, and is a major reason we have funded Tomorrow’s Writers Today. It helps pave the way for their future success.
