“The Shining” Is A Powerful New Work from The Atlanta Opera and Alliance Theatre

Why do we love him so much?!

The magic of Stephen King’s novels is that they grip the reader in irresistible plot lines and characters while exploring deeper aspects of human nature. For awhile, we are entertained on the edge of reality in his stories before riding a rollercoaster into other worlds of King’s own brand of “what if?” The Shining introduces a seemingly typical young family, but we discover quickly that the “hero” Jack Torrence is failing as a writer, a father, and a husband. His vulnerabilities grow to weaknesses and then reality shifts and he careens into madness.

The opera, written by composer Paul Moravec and librettist Mark Campbell, sticks closely to the novel (as much as the Stanley Kubrick movie misrepresented it), so the complexities of the family relationships and the strength of Jack’s son Danny, and his psychic “shining” connection to others, makes this thriller even more suspenseful. Mother and wife Wendy Torrance is a smart, motivated warrior who fiercely

protects her family in the face of threats. Originally commissioned and premiered by the Minnesota Opera in 2016, The Shining has been revised by the creators to use a colorful but smaller orchestra and remounted by San Francisco’s flagbearer of new works, Opera Parallèle, together with co-producers Portland Opera and Hawai’i Opera Theatre, with Director Brian Staufenbiel leading the new creative team. The West Coast premiere in June 2023 was greeted by thrilled audiences at sold-out performances.

Co-presented in Atlanta by The Atlanta Opera and the Alliance Theatre, anyone who loves The Shining has eleven performances split between two extraordinary casts to choose from at the Coca-Cola Stage at the Woodruff Arts Center from September 15 to October 1. Tickets start at $25 and are available at www.alliancetheatre.org/ production/2023-24/the-shining or by calling The Atlanta Opera ticket office at 404-881-8885.

City Springs Theatre

Company Opening its Sixth Season with Fiddler on the Roof in October

After spending more than a year in New York City co-starring with Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster in the revival of The Music Man, Atlanta native Shuler Hensley is back on his home turf, directing City Springs Theatre Company’s (CSTC) season six opener, Fiddler On The Roof (October 6-22). CSTC (of which Hensley serves as Artistic Director) has been trying to get the legendary musical about Tevye the milkman and the Jewish experience in czarist Russia on its schedule for years. Particularly exciting is the production’s concept, which came from an unlikely source — the social media platform TikTok. “Our production of Fiddler On The Roof will be one of the most unique productions we have ever produced at City Springs Theatre Company,” says CSTC’s Executive Director Natalie DeLancey. “We discovered our Scenic Designer Jacob Olson on TikTok, where he creates and showcases

His Fiddler design puts a beautiful spin on a long-time classic while still keeping traditions and family front and center. Not only will we be building this production from the ground up, but it will be an imaginative design concept that has never been seen before!” In addition to its 3-week run in the Byers Theatre (located in the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center), the production will also be seen by nearly 4,000 area students via CSTC’s growing education initiatives. “Creating opportunities for young audiences to see important, historical shows like Fiddler On The Roof is part of our mission,” says Jenna Gamerl, director of education for City Springs Theatre Conservatory. “Developing audiences and arts supporters starts at a young age, and we at City Springs Theatre are thrilled to introduce this musical theatre classic to the next generation!”

Belong Here Place, People, and Purpose in Latinx Photography

You Belong Here: Place, People, and Purpose in Latinx Photography celebrates the dynamic photography of Latinx artists across the United States. The exhibition brings together established and emerging artists, who tackle themes of political resistance, family and community, fashion and culture, and the complexity of identity in American life.

Artists in the exhibition contribute to a vast visual archive of the Latinx experience as pluralistic, nuanced, and fluid. They illustrate a range of histories and geographies, contextualize and reinterpret watershed social and artistic movements, stake space for queerness, and articulate the importance of photography within the larger field of Latinx art.

You Belong Here explores contemporary photography that sheds light on social spaces — from intimate portrayals of home and family to collective experiences of the streets and nightlife — as well as the inbetweenness, or nepantla, of transnational, multiracial, and postcolonial identities. It generates an expansive dialogue about

visibility and belonging for Latinx people. The exhibition features work by Laura Aguilar, Genesis Báez, William Camargo, Sofía Córdova, Perla de Leon, Tarrah Krajnak, Hiram Maristany, Joiri Minaya, Steven Molina Contreras, Star Montana, Eddie Quiñones, Reynaldo Rivera, Guadalupe Rosales, Gabriela Ruiz and Bibs Moreno, and John M. The MOS 2023-2024 performance season includes concerts of Broadway and show tunes by Leonard Bernstein, Cole Porter, Georgia and Ira Gershwin, and Lin-Manuel Miranda; A John Rutter Christmas featuring popular and traditional music from this well-loved choral composer; a tribute to Robert Shaw in recognition of the 25th anniversary of Mr. Shaw’s passing; and a community singalong Messiah, among others.

The in-person MOS symphonic-sized chorus is auditioned; the ONLINE choral experience is open to all interested singers, whether near or far, seasoned or beginner. This dual choral programming evolved naturally from the community formed by singers in the throes of pandemic isolation. and allows MOS to more fully realize its mission to engage, educate, and enrich lives through choral song. Thus far, MOS ONLINE has had participants from 28 U.S. states and nine countries. For information on MOS’s in-person and ONLINE opportunities, and on how you can be a part of our community of music, visit mosingers.com, call 770.594.7974, or write to mosoffice@mosingers.com.

The Sky’s the Limit with Atlanta Master Chorale

It’s a cliché, “the sky’s the limit.” There are no barriers to our dreams and possibilities.

On October 13 and 14, Atlanta Master Chorale will take the stage in Emerson Concert Hall at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts to present a program featuring music of dreams and endless possibilities.

There is something about looking up at the sky that releases the wonder of our inner child. We ask, “Why is the sky blue?” “Where does the wind come from?” “Is there life on other planets?” “Where do I fit into the cosmos?” We all remember looking at fluffy clouds in a deep blue sky and discovering that the cloud-shapes looked like animals.

Beyond that, there is something inherently optimistic about sky-gazing. When life takes a turn for the better, we happily declare that “things are looking up!”

Our October concert will revel in the offerings of the morning and evening skies: wind, clouds, birds, rainbows, sun, moon, stars, constellations, and endless possibilities.

As the Air Force song says, “Off we go, into the wild blue yonder.” We hope you will join us in October for

this launch into the limitless beyond of the heavens as we start our new concert season.

In our almost 40-year history, the Atlanta Master Chorale has come to define excellence in choral performance. Our 2023-2024 season showcases repertoire that is both meaningful and technically challenging. Future concert programs will be featured in upcoming ShowGuide editions. For full season details and ticket information, visit www.atlantamasterchorale.org/concerts. Rialto Center for the Arts Gets Funky and Animated with Fall 2023 Season Events

Downtown Atlanta will get funky and animated when the Rialto Center for the Arts kicks off its 2023-2024 Rialto Series themed Holding The Light, exploring how the arts inspire hope in challenging times.

The high-energy season kicks off Oct. 14 with a two-time Grammy winning ensemble named after the Gullah phrase for “get funky”: Ranky Tanky, with special guest Ms. Lisa Fischer, herself a two-time Grammy winner.

With roots tethered to the Sea Islands, Ranky Tanky combines songs handed down through generations, performing works from their Billboard-ranked No. 1 album “Good Time” featuring a funk fusion of R&B and Gullah.

Audiences will embrace Fischer, who appeared prominently in the Oscarwinning documentary “20 Feet from Stardom” in which she sang the female lyrics of “Gimme Shelter” with Mick Jagger and performed her own hit single “How Can I Ease The Pain.”

The season continues Nov. 11 with The Queen’s Cartoonists, a New York-based ensemble that meticulously recreates soundtracks from over 100 years of animation, perfectly synchronizing their instruments to classic cartoons projected on screen.

Matching the energy of the drawn action while leading audiences through a world of virtuosic musicianship, their multi-instrumental mayhem and comedy features favorites like 1943’s Looney Tunes classic “Yankee Doodle Daffy” or Henry Mancini’s 1963 theme for “The Pink Panther.”

The Rialto celebrates the changing seasons with the 26th Annual Holiday Gala presented by the Georgia State School of Music on Dec. 3. Audiences will enjoy this highly anticipated concert, now a tradition of over 25 years, featuring talented students and faculty presenting a joyful celebration.

The season’s theme Holding the Light draws inspiration quoted by an unknown sage who stated, “The greatest challenge of being alive: To witness the injustice of this world, and not allow it to consume our light.”

Rialto Executive Director Lee Foster explains, “The long success of our venue is based on the foundation of Holding the Light, with the arts figuratively serving as a beacon of light, inspiring encouragement for all in Atlanta.”

Free (validated) parking is available at the 100 Peachtree Parking Garage for all Rialto Series shows. Purchase tickets at Rialto.GSU.edu.

Conant Performing Arts Center, the university’s premier venue, stages both student and professional theatre productions and music performances throughout the year.

This 2023-2024 season begins with a student production of the off-Broadway comedy “Fairycakes,” a musical romp that asks: “What are the fairies of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ up to when not on duty in the enchanted forest?” Far away from home, fairy King and Queen Oberon and Titania have found themselves spirited away to other classic fairytale worlds in this hilarious and fantastical mashup of Shakespeare and the Brothers Grimm. “Fairycakes” is on the Conant stage October. 20-21 and 26-29.

Later, on Nov. 3, Oglethorpe’s musical ensembles — including the chorus, orchestra, and jazz ensemble — will perform a lively repertoire at the yearly Fall Music Gala. With a variety of musical talents on display, this free community concert is an engaging showcase of the university’s emerging performers.

Following the highly reviewed run of

“Urinetown” earlier this year, Oglethorpe is once again teaming up with Atlanta theatre company Actor’s Express for a spring musical co-production featuring student performers alongside professional actors. Direct from London’s West End, “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” is a bombastic musical that tells the story of a young performer who dreams of being a famous drag queen. “Jamie” is on stage at Conant starting February 15. The Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, located in historic Lowry Hall, hosts free exhibitions throughout the year, plus concerts, lectures and workshops. “Yehimi Cambrón: Documenting the Undocumented in the South” and “Fritz Paul Zimmer, 50th Anniversary Exhibition” are on view through October 15. OUMA’s Skylight Gallery Concert Series welcomes guest performers throughout the year to perform in the museum’s spacious Skylight Gallery. On November 12, Atlanta classical guitar group Duo Catanza will fill the halls with music ranging from renaissance to modern. Experience an Unforgettable Evening this Fall at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts

Tickets for the Candler Concert Series open the door to a hidden gem on the campus of Emory University. Featuring world-class contemporary and classical music performances in the stunning Emerson Concert Hall, the upcoming 2023–2024 season begins with Jamaican-American violist Jordan Bak. On October 5, Grammy Award–winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer takes the stage, offering a mesmerizing a cappella experience that the Boston Globe hailed as “breathtaking in its accuracy of intonation, purity of blend, variety of color and swagger of style.” Breathtaking music continues with violin virtuoso Midori and Festival Strings Lucerne under the leadership of Daniel Dodds on November 16. This concert features Beethoven’s

Romance in F Major and Symphony No. 7, among others. About this work, Midori says, “Beethoven’s determination still provides a model for humankind, leading us to recognize the best in our world as we reach toward the many achievements of which we are all potentially capable. Finding my place, as a musician, interpreting several of Beethoven’s masterpieces, grounds and inspires me today, as we all face many challenges ahead.”
