But unexpectedly, Santana would experience his greatest chart success the year after being inducted. 1999's Supernatural, a collaborative project that paired the ever-adventurous guitarist with some of the top hitmakers of the day, would go on to sell upwards of 15 million copies thanks to two worldwide number one singles, "Smooth" and "Maria Maria." Remarkably, 30 years after making a

While further mainstream success followed, Santana also boldly branched out with the likes of 2014's Corazón - his first-ever Spanish language album - and 2019's Africa Speaks which eschewed traditional song structure in favor of musical exploration.

SAL VULCANO "IMPRACTICAL JOKER" BRINGING IRREVERENT COMEDIC STYLE TO EVANSVILLE THIS MONTH

A

VICTORY THEATRE / APRIL 16 / 7 P.M. long with comedian Ron White later this month, Sal Vulcano is coming to the tri-state with a noble mission: to say exactly what's on his mind. If you've had the pleasure of watching

Impractical Jokers on TruTV, then you know this New York-born comic is always up for a challenge and will do anything short of breaking the law to get a laugh. For more than a decade, Vulcano and his fellow "jokers" have taken the hidden camera reality show premise to new heights - or depths, depending on how you want to spin it - creating cringe comedy at its finest via "a series of competitive games of dares in which each cast member, or "joker," receives either a thumbs up or thumbs down for his performance." Ultimately, the loser, so to speak, of each episode must suffer some form of punishment. Hilariously, Vulcano now sports not one, but two Jaden Smith tattoos, reminders of past failures on the show. In addition to his work on Impractical Jokers, Vulcano stars in the Misery Index on TBS with other members of The Tenderloins, a comedy troupe that he formed with friends after college. The show, based on the card game "Sh*t Happens," has "gamified embarrassment, humiliation, and total misery" to the delight of audiences for three seasons to date with more reportedly on the way. Like his TV work, Vulcano's standup routine is gloriously irreverent and just what the doctor ordered during these PC times. Don't miss out! For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. RON WHITE UNCENSORED AND UNFILTERED: "BLUE COLLAR" COMEDIAN STILL PROUDLY TELLING IT LIKE IT IS

A

VICTORY THEATRE / APRIL 23 / 8 P.M. fter more than three decades as a standup comic, Ron White is still at the top of his game, continuing to sellout shows wherever he goes. The politically-incorrect

65-year-old is the antidote for these thin-skinned times, something he proudly highlighted in his 2018 Netflix special, If You Quit Listening, I'll Shut Up, in which he skewered a host of culturally-sensitive topics, delivering cutting punch lines like a drunk uncle at the Thanksgiving table. Truth be told, we need his freewheeling, I-don't-give-a-crap attitude now more than ever, especially in the wake of the last two years. And nobody is more capable of shaking things up than White, who thrives in a live setting. He loves to go deep with his storytelling, making every word count in between sips of scotch and mischievous grins. While White is primarily known for his prowess as a standup comic - particularly his past involvement with the "Blue Collar Comedy" Tour featuring fellow comedians Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy - he's also made strides in front of the camera over the years. His role as "Phil, King of the Road" on the Cameron Crowe-created 2016 Showtime series Roadies received excellent reviews and there's been talk of a project revolving around the legend of the infamous Judge Roy Bean. But White remains most at home on stage where he can tell it like it is, uncensored and unfiltered. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. onored as Billboard's #2 Christian artist of the decade in 2010, Jeremy Camp remains every bit as relevant today, his continued success propelled by the release of two

highly-acclaimed albums over the last few years, The Story's Not Over and When You Speak - the former featuring the Imagine Dragonsesque single "Dead Man Walking," the latter driven by the bouncy title track and inspirational "Just Getting Started." Both collections prove that the Indiana native has stayed true blue in his mission to spread the word of God in song while wrapping his heartfelt message up in an increasingly contemporary soundscape that appeals to a wide range of music fans. Remarkably, it's been 20 years since Camp's historic major label debut Stay signaled the arrival of a bright young talent on the scene (the album spawned six number one hits). And while much adversity followed, including the sad passing of his first wife and battles with anxiety and depression, he's persevered and grown stronger,

stock the shelves of most American markets? I never thought about it until I started actively reading labels to see what I was putting in my body. Many of the commercially available taco seasoning packets include maltodextrin (which is a very highly-processed white powder made from corn, rice, potato, or wheat) and typically a small amount of vegetable oil. I don’t know about you, but I would rather have taco seasoning that just contains spices. Why would I want a highlyprocessed starch powder or vegetable oil added to my seasoning? Making your own is very painless and quick. All you need are the spices listed and an airtight container!

With the philosophical foundation for a post-Exesion project in place, Key turned his attention to songwriting, spending the bulk of the pandemic creating an album's worth of music before coaxing former bandmates Xach Lively (vocals) and David Ford (bass) to get involved. That part was easy, but finding a drummer... not so much. "That proved to be daunting; it took almost a year," Key says. "For awhile we were jamming with Chris Emery from American Head Charge - which was surreal - but it was bad timing for him, so I called my friend Matt McGuyer and told him that I needed him." A total beast of a musician with an impressive résumé, McGuyer was more than up to the task, able to digest the material and make it his own,

T

he story of The Strangers is both a cautionary tale about the dangers of drugs and a tribute

to the resiliency of those left in the wake of a heartbreaking overdose. At its core, however, it's a reminder of the power of rock & roll and how four young tri-state men - Lucas Washington, Rylan Cox, Kadin Rea and Teelin Atteberry - are blazing a musical trail together, united by a passion for live performance. At the end of the day, that's the pay-off for the members of this exciting new band - the thrill of being onstage and sharing their songs with a growing fanbase eager to come along for the ride. Still, it's been a difficult, often emotional journey to get to this point and they'd never have made it this far without invaluable support and guidance from Wes Luttrell, owner of Evansville-based Wally Opus Records. Luttrell, who attended Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida, and learned how to record bands as part of his education, eventually settled down locally after getting married. As it turns out, his wife is a cousin of one of the members of The Strangers - small world and all. So

when he received a plea from Cox, still a student at Heritage Hills at the time, to help them capture their wide-ranging sound - influenced equally by the 60's, 70's and 90's - in a studio, he was all ears. But first Luttrell needed to hear the guys play. A rehearsal was duly scheduled

"I don't even know if we talked - they dove in and I just sat back and enjoyed the show for awhile," he says. "What struck me about them, what I noticed right away was the synergy. Whatever I was feeling, I was like, 'That's cool - I want to help out.'" Spurred by the exuberance of The

Not only was the Astra Theatre show a big success, it's had quite the ripple effect with more and more opportunities coming The Strangers' way, including invitations to play summer festivals and other upcoming events. But the band's already reaping the rewards of their hard work, having set off on a regional tour last month that runs through June, taking in cities like Nashville, Owensboro, Dayton, Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and more. And while The Strangers are showcasing their excellent self-titled debut on this jaunt, they're excited about developing creatively off the stage. "We've become better musicians, open to more influences, more mature," Cox explains. "There's a beauty in not knowing what you're doing - that's what the first album was about. B

ased on the musical pedigrees of the members of the recentlyformed Impera, it appears that a

monster is about to be unleashed upon the tri-state. Collectively, they've played in some of the area's most prominent heavy bands over the last 20 years, including Among the Ruins, Black Chain Apparatus, Crows of Odin, Dying Giant, LTC (Long Time Coming), Shatter the Odds and Stolen Remains. So, yeah, this has all the makings of a major new band on the scene. And you can thank drummer Drew Gray for lighting the fuse, as it were; after last year's Stolen Remains reunion ran its course, he switched his focus to putting together an explosive yet disciplined group along the lines of Lamb of God, envisioning an American metal-influenced outfit that could divide and conquer at will. And he knew just who to draft in first, reaching out to fellow Owensboro musicians Chris Hamilton and Tony Morrow. Morrow, a highly-trained guitarist, was a brief participant in the aforementioned Stolen Remains reunion; he also spent a minute in Gray's former cover band, Last Call, having established a musical connection with the drummer prior to being summoned to come on board the new project. Similarly, Chris Hamilton, another freakishly-talented guitarist, also did time in Last Call for a spell. While

playing other people's songs didn't much appeal to him, the prospect of joining Gray and Morrow in pursuit of metal perfection sounded ideal. Thus, Gray had secured two serious shredders right from the outset; now he needed a gung-ho musician to hold down the bottom end of the band and complete a formidable rhythm section. "Owensboro didn't really have a heavy bass player available, so I got in touch with [guitarist] Ryan Key from [Evansville metal band] Null Valley and asked who he would suggest," Gray recalls. MARK TWITCHELL: WANNABE SERIAL KILLER

quite fascinating. The former Canadian filmmaker was inspired by the lead character and dark tone of the show and longed to experience the thrill of the kill - with the intent of becoming a serial killer. But thankfully, his career in murder was cut short, ultimately derailed by the first targeted victim, Gilles Tetreault, who would tell a remarkable tale of survival to detectives and lead them to the truth about the Dexter Morgan-worshipping sociopath. Sadly, John Altinger also fell prey to Twitchell's deception and paid with his life. The events of this unique case took place back in 2008 in Edmonton, Alberta, where Twitchell had been building a pseudo film career - first with Star Wars: Secrets of the Rebellion, a fulllength fan film prequel that he directed (it never saw release), followed by Day Players, a buddy comedy, as well as a horror short called House of Cards. He clearly fancied himself a mover and shaker in the local entertainment scene and often talked a big game but had yet to achieve any notable success. Little did anyone know, however, that Twitchell harbored a much darker ambition. A sociopath to the core, Twitchell was incapable of empathy, only concerned about his own desires - primarily, murder. But he needed a victim to set his devious plan in motion. So Twitchell uploaded a fake profile on Plenty of Fish, a Canadian online dating service, posing as "Sheena" to lure an unsuspecting individual to his

lair. Gilles Tetreault, new to the area and having recently suffered a heartbreaking divorce, was a prime target. Eager to meet new people, he quickly became entrapped in Twitchell's web after connecting with "Sheena" online - and nearly met his demise on their first "date," assaulted the moment he, per instructions, entered a garage off of an alley to get to her back door. A battle of survival straight out of the movies ensued with Tetreault narrowly escaping yet failing to report the harrowing incident to police out of sheer embarrassment. Unfortunately, John Altinger would not be so lucky. Also lured to the now infamous garage by the promise of a date with a beautiful and engaging woman, he was killed and dismembered by Twitchell who placed his remains in a storm sewer - and then wrote about the horrific event (as well as the previous misadventure with Tetreault), detailing the experience in a document titled "SK Confessions," an account of his descent into becoming a serial killer. It's believed he hoped to publish the story as a fictional work or use it as a basis for a film project; however, Twitchell would never get the chance. After learning of Altinger's terrible fate, Tetreault, completely guilt-ridden, finally came forward and gave detectives vital info that led to the arrest and conviction of this

And yet, President Zelenskyy remains defiant, refusing to leave his people behind to suffer Putin's wrath alone. That's leadership, folks. All the more impressive with the knowledge that he formerly worked as a comedian - but then again, I'm reminded of how Robin Williams, as wacky and unhinged as he was, truly shined in dramatic roles.

THE MOST UNITED THE UNITED STATES HAS BEEN IN AGES. Who can forget his star turn in Good Will Hunting as a deeply empathetic therapist (Putin could learn a thing or two from his character)? Totally overrated movie, by the way (hate mail incoming). Sorry, someone had to say it. It's like when a group of friends nominates someone to inform another member of the group that, you know, their haircut is trash or their breath stinks. No one wants to do it, but it simply must be done in order for the world to keep turning. Anyhow, it's hard to find a glimmer of hope in this whole Russian-induced nightmare, but on the home front, this is quite possibly the most united the United States has been in ages. Won't last long, clearly, but we all needed a break from the noise - just sad that it took the evil ways of Putin to quiet the storm.

BOURNE WHEN LATE NIGHT THOUGHTS ARE

With

FREDDIE BOURNE

THE AGE WHEN PEOPLE BEGIN NOT TO CARE

While I am thankful that I have been able to cross over to the other side of ages 18, 21 and the cursed 27 Club, 30 does come off as an odd time, especially because my mental state has been stuck in my mid-20s for awhile now. The best way I can describe this unwieldy vibe is that I took a pause from enjoying my early 20s after experiencing loss (don’t worry, we won’t dive in - you got enough therapy talk last issue). Because I was essentially a hermit, my financial maturity finally came into play simply because I wasn’t really going out by choice and, at the time, my strong dislike of being in public settings and food that was fried (though not notated on the menu) kept me more at home. By the time some of that fog cleared up and I started to live independently once again (Adulthood, take two), I was 26 living out my 22-year-old fantasies - playing music, staying out in New York City until 4 a.m., experiencing one-night stands, crying after said one-night stands due to guilt and spending loads of cash on unnecessary crap while paying for graduate school all out of pocket.

52 | APRIL 2022

I mean, my friends on social media were doing it. Why shouldn’t I? Sure enough, some can tell that I figured it out - what “it” is. But, that’s far from the truth. In my head, I still feel like I’m catching up on that lost time while the only thing I’m losing is my money and the focus on the present. I’m at the point in my life where if I do something wrong, falling back on the excuse of youth will no longer fly. I’ve admitted that I’ve been stalled between the bargaining and anger phrase in grief while the rest of myself is simply stuck in the youth that I’m too afraid to let go of in many facets. It sounds like a great idea to drive seven hours away to a five pound cereal eating contest in Ohio, but it’s probably more sensible to pay my car insurance on the 17th of the month.

"30 DOES COME OFF AS AN ODD TIME, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE MY MENTAL STATE HAS BEEN STUCK IN MY MID-20S FOR AWHILE NOW."

Cereal money ain’t gonna pay for a broken down vehicle. The reality is I’m afraid of letting go - letting go of what did not happen, what I wish did happen and what I wish I could have done differently. But that’s not how the world works. And neither should I.

APRIL MUSIC REVIEWS ALESSIA CARA Broken Heart Universal Music Group These 11 tracks stand out. “Drama Queen” hits the sweet spot with sugary lyrics: “They tell us love done the right way is draining/ Kissing and arguing and crying when it's raining/ In that case you and I got it made/ Always on the ropes / We need a standing ovation.” ”Bluebird” has scintillating Brazilian bossa nova vibes. It cuts deep with, “Bluebird in the spring/ Told me that your new girl makes you sing/ Guess my loving only clipped your wings/ So, I let you go.” “Box in the Ocean” is self-reflective about her role as a young woman blossoming into stardom with, “I don't want to grow old, I don't want to be square/ What if I'm a bad role model, what if I'm scared?" Her vocals are silky. She’s poetic the way she sings to us. She gives us an intoxicating music video for “Shapeshifter,” in which she plays several roles around a gorgeous mansion from woman of the house to gardener. Alessia Cara is both a great singer and a chameleon. - Marisa Patwa

DIPLO Diplo Higher Ground Productions/Mad Decent The DJ/producer immerses himself into glamorous house music with his self-titled album. “Humble” with Lil Yachty is a mindbending beat. The lyrics are catchy and quick, taking you on a trip with, “We got dead friends, it’s all the same/ Promise I'll remember your face, just can’t remember your name.” “Don’t Forget My Love” is a gorgeous beat with a psychedelic club music video that turns into a fun horror show to accompany it. You’ll be on your feet dancing for all three minutes and 19 seconds of the song. There are features on nearly every track - a sign that Diplo likes to highlight other people’s talents and make some creative magic. In addition to Lil Yachty, collaborators include Amtrac, Leon Bridges, Ry X, Elberbrook, Andhim, Paul Woolford, Kareen Lomax, Sidepiece, Damian Lazarus, Jungle, TSHA, Aluna, Durante, Seth Troxler and Desire. Kennedy and the Conspirators. They have produced some great material over the last decade. For example, the debut Apocalyptic Love rivals anything that Slash did with Axl, Duff and the gang back in the 80s. However, the new release 4 leaves something to be desired. It feels like an album searching for ideas. While there are a few creative and original moments, there are just as many rehashed riffs and familiar tropes we’ve heard on the previous trio of albums. I suppose this happens with most bands - it’s not easy to reinvent your sound or progress musically as a whole. Having said that, it’s a straightforward, blues-based rock album that is well-produced and contains a few catchy songs with some hooks. As with all their music, the guitar work is solid, Myles is a melodic singer, and there are some tasty guitar solos. Check out “C’est la vie” and “The River is Rising.” - Matt Alschbach

DILJÁ Shadows Self-released Icelandic singer-songwriter Diljá brings the sense of art-pop vocals that remind one of Emilie Autumn, the vibe and attitude of Alanis Morissette and storytelling skills of Carly Simon and Norah Jones on this 10-track venture. While each song comes off as a waltz at first listen, the production takes many forms of experimentation with the vast range of guitar tones, followed by small hints of chimes and piano that brings out the best of Diljá's simplistic yet endearing delivery that keeps you hanging on her every word - even when edging towards more slow-jam verses like the trip-hopsounding “Temporary Love” before kicking off her shoes and getting down and dirty with “Feel Your Passion." Standout tracks “Sporin” and “Dans á rósum,” sung in her native tongue, really show off Diljá’s range and her effortless tone that works wonders over the lush orchestration, while closing tracks “In Your Eyes” and “Waiting For You” give a nod to Donovan, Mercury Rev and the early work of Traffic yet stay true to Diljá’s sound and individuality. - Freddie Bourne

BLUES WITH BRAGIN BIG AL & THE HEAVYWEIGHTS Love One Another Vizztone Label Group

New Orleans-based Big Al & The Heavyweights return with Love One Another. The album opens with the title track, a west coast blues song with an uplifting message about treating people with kindness so that humanity can flourish. Jason Ricci’s superb harmonica skills shine through in the song. “I Need a Fix” features a great bass line from Mark Parsons. Marcel Anton also displays masterful guitar work. Big Al Lauro’s drumming on “Sweet Louise” helps give the song a great feel. Distorted guitar playing from Anton sets the tone for “Wild Tchoupitoulas” and Wayne Lohr provides a dynamic piano line. “Guardian Angel” seems steeped in 1950s ballads as the lyrics discuss needing someone to watch over you as you try to improve. “Alright with Me” sounds reminiscent of a jazz/blues hybrid like Brian Setzer. A funky groove permeates “Stop This Messing Around.” Anton offers blistering guitar at the beginning of “What Can I Say.” Jason Ricci returns on the track with phenomenal harmonica. “I’m Your Man” feels like a psychedelic trip reminiscent of The Doors. The bass and guitar on “Too Cold” sound like a funky blast from the 1970s that counters the lyrics about not being warm enough. - Paul Bragin

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4

Clear, pink-ish pour, with no head and a distinct effervescence. Mango and orange on the nose, this is more of a hard seltzer than a beer. The blood orange and mango are powerful on the palate, with a sweet finish and no bitterness. Perfect for the fruity seltzer drinker.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3

A thick white head forms and stays for a long time. The scent contains a good amount of mango, followed by orange notes. The fruit flavors continue with the first sip. This could see a rise in popularity during hot summer months when drinkers want something light and refreshing to quench their thirst. Pair it with fruity dishes or use it as an ingredient in your favorite fruity desserts like pineapple upside-down cake.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a nice golden/straw beer with decent carbonation. It smells a little fruity. I can taste the mango and some of the orange but those flavors are not overbearing. I thought it was going to be some sort of dreamsicle beer but it's not. Still, it's pretty sweet and more of a dessert beer. This is not a session beer but I like it.

Light ale meets Lemonade. This shandy pours a slightly hazy yellow. The lemonade carries a strong presence on the nose and dominates on the palate as well. At 4.2% ABV, I would have expected a stronger ale presence but lemonade will not be denied. Not too sweet, with just a slight bitterness on the finish. If you love lemonade and beer, give this a try.

A thick white head crowns this beer and remains for a considerable amount of time. The scent profile contains a good amount of lemon. The initial taste contains a balance of lemon and sugar with minimal carbonation. This beer could see a rise in popularity during the brutal heat of the summer months, and the low alcohol content lends itself to having several. Pair it with your favorite lemon desserts like lemon squares or lemon meringue pie.

This beer has a hazy yellow color and looks very inviting. I consider this a summer beer to drink outside when you need a refreshment after mowing. Shandys never pack the punch of a regular beer and I guess they don’t intend to. This one has a nice, light lemon flavor with an ABV of 4.2%. As shandys go, it's pretty good and I'll have to get some in the summer.

This IPA pours a beautiful hazy orange. Brewed with a special type of Citra hops, meant to bring out the hop flavors, this one delivers. Mango and other tropical notes dominate the nose. The palate adds distinct and unique piney flavors. It is much dryer than your typical hazy IPA and has a dry finish.

A thick white head rests on this hazy pale ale and never totally evaporates. Citrus and pine notes from the hops fill the nose. More citrus hits the tongue with the initial tasting and holds up during the extended finish. People who enjoy hoppy beers need to try this. Pair it with a variety of foods like Cheddar cheese, pizza with spicy toppings or spicy cuisines like Mexican dishes with avocado and sour cream.

This is a hazy pale ale with decent carbonation. I have had a few other Sweet Water beers and this one is pretty good. It has a tropical fruit flavor with some pine. I like the complexity of this beer. I also like the bitterness which is not over the top. With an ABV of 5.4%, this would be a good session beer.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.5 FIRESTONE MIND HAZE DOUBLE IPA

This New England IPA has the expected hazy yellow-orange hue. Loads of fruit on the nose, owed to the enormous and diverse hop bill in this brew. Grapefruit, mango, and pineapple dominate the nose. A slight sweetness on the palate where an orange citrus flavor comes through. This is very easy drinking, belying the 8.2% ABV. If you like NEIPAs, this one will not disappoint.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A thick white head crowns this IPA and never completely dissipates. Fruity hop scents dominate the scent profile. The first sip of the

beer feels heavy in the mouth as more citrus coats the tongue and remains in the very long finish. People who like IPAs need to drink this. Pair it with pork dishes like carnitas, citrus-glazed pork chops or the brewery’s special burger topped with goat cheese and pickled habanero peppers.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a hazy, light brown-colored beer with a heavy tropical hops flavor yet it's very smooth. It has a nice sweetness to it and finishes with a little bitterness but I think that just gives it some character. Overall, it's a little bit heavy with an amped up 8.2% ABV. Definitely going to keep an eye out for this double IPA.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
