Ana Popovic LINCOLN AMPHITHEATRE / JULY 16 / 7:30 P.M.

REVERED BLUES PHENOM ON HER BELOVED '64 FENDER STRAT, SONGWRITING EVOLUTION, "NAVAJO MOON" AND MORE

O

ver the last 20-plus years, Ana Popovic has developed into one of the world's premier blues guitarists. The Serbia native - now based in Los Angeles - boasts

a style all her own, totally based on feel and summoned (most often) from a classic '64 Fender Strat. There's no calculation involved in her stunning live performances, just an authentic reaction to the groove provided by Popovic's ace backing band. But she's just as creative in the studio. Every release signals a new direction to keep fans on their toes, covering everything from classic blues to funk, jazz and R&B. In fact, 2016's Trilogy, an incredibly ambitious triple album, put her diversity on full display with each side dedicated to a particular style of music. 2018's Like It On Top, produced by the inimitable Keb' Mo', explored 10 different aspects of female empowerment with Popovic's sassy vocals set to a seriously funky, Prince-like soundtrack. Now she's set to follow it up in the fall with a "different sound than anything I've done before" - a further creative evolution that Popovic credits to the pandemic for allowing plenty of time to experiment. And it's certainly a bonus that she's got the new release ready to go because her tour schedule looks to take in 150 dates in total this year, leaving little time to record. Popovic is in demand, in other words. Understandable, because the stage is where she truly shines, taking her studio efforts to new heights night after night. Popovic kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of her performance at the Lincoln Amphitheatre. You recently returned to your home country of Serbia for a

ne of the true highlights of the summer festival season, '80s Rock the Dam is back for a fifth go-around at the fantastic Beaver Dam Amphitheater in Kentucky. Rest assured it's going to be

worth every minute of the short hour drive from Evansville to see this year's lineup featuring the voice of Ratt, Stephen Pearcy, Quiet Riot, Kix and the BulletBoys. Between these incredible acts there's a long list of chart hits, including classics such as "Round and Round," "Lay It Down," "You're In Love," "Cum on Feel the Noize," "Metal Health," "Don't Close Your Eyes" and "Smooth Up in Ya." Which means the rock will be virtually non-stop from the moment the concert starts - so don't miss a single minute. Show headliner Stephen Pearcy is the definition of rock royalty, having fronted one of the most successful bands of the '80s, Ratt. Now the sole remaining original member, he's continued to keep their legacy alive with dynamic performances that capture the edge and energy from those unforgettable hair metal days. And yes, he's still got the hair - and the leather pants. Despite some health struggles over the last several years, Pearcy has battled through it all and looks to be back in peak frontman form. Of course, he'll get plenty of support from his fellow metal heads in Quiet Riot who sadly lost drummer Frankie Banali to cancer in 2020 but have vowed to honor their fallen brother by rocking harder than ever. Add in Kix and the BulletBoys and you've got an unforgettable night of live music outside in the warm summer air. Doesn't get any better! For tickets and more info, visit beaverdamtourism.com.

WHAT'SCOOKIN' WITH MATT LAINE

2ND LANGUAGE 401 NW 2ND ST, SUITE B EVANSVILLE, IN

O

h, how I have been waiting to try this place out! I was already a massive fan of the owner’s restaurant on the east side of town, Pangea, so the anticipation to try 2nd Language was palpable. I’ve been checking

out their menu for awhile and all their pictures look absolutely stunning. And let me assure you, the food looks every bit that good in person, too.

them again next time I visit. For my entrée, I ordered the Southeast Asian Steak Chimichurri. I want to say this is a fusion dish because I believe Chimichurri is a South American thing - though I could be wrong. But I love this sauce and truly think it can elevate any dish. (Side note: I don’t know if it's the norm not to ask how someone wants a steak cooked, but this is a flank steak so it's not a thick slab of meat. The cook was right at medium-rare to medium, and that's right in the sweet spot for me.) The Chimichurri was bright and vibrant as it should be, and paired with the rice, it was crazy tasty. Also, in Chimichurri fashion it packed a touch of heat from the pepper flakes, which, combined with the Gyoza, left an ever-so-slight tingle on my tongue and lips as a reminder on my journey back to the office of how good this food tasted. I’m a sucker for Gyoza, steak, and some heat-packing sauce, so this meal was an out-of-the-park home run in my opinion! The service was also amazing. Servers carry around tablets that allow them to place orders and take payments table-side which is very efficient. This addition is always pleasant to see, and I wish it were affordable enough for all restaurants to adapt this technology; it just streamlines the process. I would like to say I’m not surprised by anything this place had to offer, but it was truly a great visit and I can’t wait to come back and try out their ramen, which I hear so much about. Again, it all looks like utter perfection in a bowl so I look forward to tasting it on another day!

*I know once the building is completely renovated 2nd Language will easily be above 9 for an overall rating. The food is delicious, the service is good, and the decor is spot-on.

TRI-STATE HORRORSCOPES NO MATTER YOUR ASTROLOGICAL SIGN, THINGS AREN'T EXACTLY LOOKING UP THIS MONTH

GEMINI (May 21-Jun 20)

Even worse than being forced to relive the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial, you'll be legally bound to watch Depp's musical performances front and center or risk imprisonment. Though listening to him sing and play guitar for an hour should be punishment enough. CANCER (Jun 21-Jul 22)

You will accidentally bang your head and, subsequently, find that you can only respond "whatevs" to any and all inquiries. The upside is you won't be that upset about it, because, you know, whatevs. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22)

For reasons that will remain unclear, you will be blamed for both high gas prices and inflation everywhere you go this month. You will be very unpopular.

VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sep 22)

You will visit your hairstylist who will somehow mishear "just take a little off the top, please" as "give me the Ed Sheeran." Insult to injury, she'll still expect payment and a generous tip.

LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 22)

The only news feed you'll receive this month will be updates on the life of Chrissy Teigen. Soon you'll be begging for coverage of war, genocide and famine.

NEWS4U JULY 2022 | ENTERTAINMENT SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21)

Sarcastic bastard that you are, you'll make a wisecrack about the vacuous nature of K-pop in a crowded tri-state restaurant only to realize - much to your horror - that members of the BTS Army happen to be dining locally that night and they won't take kindly to your little attempt at humor. Sayonara. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21)

Perhaps worse than Gemini's fate, you'll be forced to watch a meme of Jimmy Fallon's exaggerated fake-laugh until comedy loses all meaning and there's nothing funny left in this world for you.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19)

Getting updates solely about Chrissy Teigen will seem like a blessing compared to what's in store for you this month: only news about Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson's budding romance. And any Kanye-related drama. Just give up, already.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18)

Aquarius means "water carrier" in Latin. You will spend this month carrying a lot of water weight which only seems logical. Otherwise, you're cool.

PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20)

While out grocery shopping, you will discover that Ski soda has disappeared from the shelves for good and go into severe shock. Sadly, no one in the store will have an EpiPen handy. RIP. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19)

You will awake to an alternate universe where everyone but you is an influencer. And you've got Ed Sheeran's haircut. Wait, that's been taken. Make that Boris Johnson's.

TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20)

In perhaps the cruelest twist of all, you'll discover that your real mother is Joy Behar from The View and she wants you to appear as a guest on the show. Run screaming.

TRUE CRIME JUNKIE

PICTURED: LIAM, SARAH AND TAYLOR

WITH JOHNNY FLETCHER

THE MURDER OF SARAH STERN There are many reasons why people commit murder, but perhaps the most baffling is the "I wanted to know what it felt like to take a life" scenario. The idea that someone would risk everything to experience, as is most often the case, a fleeting sense of control (it's almost always about power) over another human being is truly confounding. Oftentimes, the individuals who perpetrate a crime of this nature are seemingly normal on the outside, giving no indication that they're harboring sickening urges. What's more, they tend to seek out a random victim - there's no personal connection, no link to explain why a particular target was chosen. And that's what makes the murder of Sarah Stern such a shocking case. Here we have a young woman - loved by all - who met with a horrific demise at the hands of someone desperate to know the thrill of the kill. Unbelievably, it was one of her best friends.

into the water below. As a close friend of Stern's - and reportedly the last person to see her alive - McAtasney was quickly questioned by investigators after news of her disappearance broke. True to his deceitful nature, he coolly put the onus on Stern's father, noting that she often complained about him and threatened to move away, possibly to Canada, to put distance between them. Or maybe she killed herself by jumping off that

Liam McAtasney came across like your basic teenager from Neptune City, New Jersey. Nothing stood out that would indicate he'd one day cross an unthinkable line. But six months before Stern's murder, he became aware that his close friend had inherited a fairly significant amount of money - and so the wheels began to turn. Leading up to the crime, McAtasney plotted a robbery but in the back of his mind the lure of taking an innocent life - of exerting power over Stern - loomed large. He was more than willing to go down that dark path; in fact, he craved it. So on December 2, 2016, McAtasney put his plan in motion, driving to Stern's home where he ultimately strangled her to death before taking off with thousands of dollars. He then recruited friend and roommate Preston Taylor to help him dispose of the body - the two drove her car

onto the Route 35 bridge in Belmar and threw Stern

bridge? But despite how cooperative McAtasney appeared to be with the investigation, some of his responses to cops' queries caused concern - especially when he inquired if they thought her body would have floated far away by then, had she committed suicide. Suspicion grew as investigators caught McAtasney in numerous lies and discovered home surveillance footage of his car coming back to Stern's home on the day of the murder later than he claimed to have been there. Finally, they obtained a full confession by wiring an acquaintance who McAtasney proudly regaled with a detailed description of the murder. As the video footage showed, he smiled and laughed through the whole account. Ironically, it was Taylor who helped cops set up the dragnet by admitting to his own involvement in Stern's disappearance. Ratted out by a close friend, McAtasney was sentenced to life without parole.

"

BUT DESPITE HOW COOPERATIVE MCATASNEY APPEARED TO BE WITH THE INVESTIGATION, SOME OF HIS RESPONSES TO COPS' QUERIES CAUSED CONCERN.

a big proponent of skateboarding, an activity that sort of comes with the territory. But in truth, Glick's interest in the sport predates his musical awakening; he first got on board, so to speak, back in the late 80's as a pre-teen looking to try something new and exciting - and quickly became hooked, spending most of his free time on wheels, working on different maneuvers and worshipping professional legends like Tony Hawk. "I've always kind of been obsessed with skateboarding," he admits. And though Glick's main focus would shift to music in his teens - he would eventually form his own punk band - his devotion to the sport has never wavered. "A lot of people that work in one kind of "cool guy" people out the door which I always thought was counter-productive." The solution? Glick, at the height of the pandemic lockdowns, opened Cure Skateshop inside his parents' antique store in downtown Henderson. "I thought I must be crazy to do that but she was ok," Stein says. "I had to sit on her a little bit to calm her - she's 11 months old and still got puppy brain." The next logical step was fostering

Zoey - but first Stein had to convince her husband to go along with it. He was resistant but gave in and quickly formed a bond with the couple's new furry roommate. "Zoey won him over just like she did me - even the cats started coming around to her. After she'd been in the house for awhile I didn't have any problem getting my husband to agree to adopt to her."

VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT Newburgh's Paula Stein is a lifelong

animal lover. She grew up with cats and dogs at home in New Jersey before eventually settling in the tri-state where she owned horses for a period of time on a 14-acre property out in Lynnville. A longtime VHS volunteer, Stein has primarily worked with cats at the shelter and often fosters kittens - which makes sense as she's used to caring for them. In fact, she and her husband share their residence with four felines. But recently Stein found herself taking an interest in a particular dog at the shelter while she was assisting with the Mutts Morning Out program. She couldn't help but notice Zoey, an unusually quiet terrier mix who seemed unaffected by the

excitement of it all. Stein, naturally, became very curious. "After two weeks of watching her I asked about her story," she says. "They said she'd been adopted twice and returned. She seemed so nice - but then I got her out in Garvin Park and she was just as rambunctious as all the other dogs. But she was so sweet and I know you can overcome those behaviors if you work at it and settle them down."

Stein and her husband signed the adoption papers back in mid-May, making Zoey an official member of the family. And her behavior's only been improving ever since. "We got her enrolled in obedience classes - she's super smart," Stein notes. Ultimately, the plan is for Zoey to become a service animal of some sort. "I really think she's got some hound in her - she follows her nose like a search & rescue kind of dog," Stein explains. "The other goal is for her to go into hospice

In the following weeks, Stein spent time with Zoey at the shelter, walking her regularly and even taking her for car rides to Rural King. Finally, she took her home for a meet & greet with the cats - which went better than expected.

Actually, as I type this, the latest Yahoo headline is about the upcoming Capitol riot hearings. littered with incredible guest performances,

His performances on SNL debuting two of his singles were so simple and beautiful; I had both songs on repeat for days. “Cooped Up” with Roddy Rich is a fun song with sick beats and although it's infused with Auto-Tune - which Post Malone doesn’t need - it still slaps. “Love/Hate Letter to Alcohol'' is a blistering honest look at the pitfalls of alcoholism. He sings with such authenticity, you can’t help but feel as vulnerable with honest lyrics like, “You're the reason why I got my ass kicked/ But you're the only way to drown my sadness.” But it's also funny and self-deprecating: “Looking in the mirror something's wrong/ Let me get my dentist on the phone.” Further proving he's got a great sense of humor, Post Malone promoted the album by doing a “Day Drinking with Seth Meyers” segment which was hilarious. He's so incredibly, unapologetically himself (even if he did get his stage name from a rap generator) that his musicality shines through just as much as his humor and grace. Doja Cat, The Weeknd, Gunna, Kid Laroi and Fleet Foxes all add spice with appearances. - Marisa Patwa

including features by Taylour Paige, Ghostface Killah, Summer Walker, Kodak Black, Beth Gibbons of Portishead, Sampha, Amanda Reifer, Sam Dew, Tann Leone, Blxst and Baby Keem. He's giving these lesser known - yet very talented - artists the chance to shine on a big name album, proving he's a generous musician. A smart move, it seems, because the album debuted at number one. Lamar dabbles in all genres from west coast hip-hop to psychedelic jazz, blues and trap, touching on themes like religion, cancel culture and gender identity. In “Auntie Diaries” he recounts a story from his youth with his transgender uncle and cousin. It’s empowering for the LBGTQ+ community to have this kind of representation, especially on the heels of Pride Month. “N95” and “Silent Hill” are two standouts. My favorite is “Rich Spirit,” which takes you to church on the beach with a dawn-filled baptism: “Paintin' pictures, put me in the Louvre, that's a definite/ Universal shift, I'm in a groove/ And celebrity does not mean integrity, you fool/ I'm a good man, shakin' hand, firm grip rule.” Lamar's truly the professor of rap and I’ll take the full course load - Marisa Patwa

MJ LENDERMAN Boat Songs Dear Life Records The Asheville country scene must be having a moment right now. In addition to Angel Olsen’s excellent Big Time record, Asheville singer/songwriter MJ Lenderman releases his anticipated debut. On Boat Songs, Lenderman delivers 10 slice-of-life songs about boats, basketball, Disney World, and cussing out neighbors “throwin’ sh*t in the yard.” Opening track “Hangover Game” is a ripping country-rock song about Michael Jordan’s infamous “flu game." Not only is it a great opener and an album highlight, it perfectly sets the tone for the rest of the album, ensuring you’ll enjoy all of Boat Songs if you like “Hangover Game.” If you’re a fan of Drive-By Truckers or Sparklehorse, MJ Lenderman’s debut will surely be one of your favorite albums of 2022. - Russ Finn

WILCO Cruel Country dBpm Records Wilco rose from the ashes of alt-country originators Uncle Tupelo in the early 90s and kicked off their career with the country-rock A.M. in 1995. In the 27 years since, Wilco have done everything they can to expand their sound into more experimental territory, leaving country music behind. However, when the band got together to create their 12th studio effort, they reportedly ditched all of the art-pop songs in progress and instead recorded Cruel Country - a massive 21-song country concept album about the state of our nation. Wilco have always been somewhat political, but never as biting as they are here with lines like, “There is no middle when the other side would rather kill than compromise.” This return to form is not only welcomed, the resulting album is one of their strongest ever. - Russ Finn

from Eddie Bayers at the song’s outset that sets the tone very well. The guitar from Jonathon “Boogie” Long adds a nice touch. “That’s New Orleans” discusses the great things about living in the Big Easy. Funky guitar from Rex Pearce will start your body moving. The beat on “Have A Party” sounds reminiscent of the Daft Punk hit “Get Lucky” or the Chic hit “Good Times.” The bass line from Daniels will get your toes tapping. More funky bass playing from Daniels highlights the great R&B sound on “In the Groove Zone.” The superb horn section from Jason Parfait and Ian Smith on “Reach Out” matches the lyrics about opening your heart and showing kindness to others. The slightly psychedelic feel on “I’m Gonna Prove My Love” offers a nice contrast to lyrics about showing a woman you care. “Where Love Lies” offers great keyboard playing from Nelson Blanchard to complement the horns from Lacy Blackledge and Pete Verbois. Parfait returns with top-notch saxophone playing on “Sweet Situation.” “Where Ya at in Life” boasts an island feel that seems perfect for sipping a drink from a coconut. - Paul Bragin

JULY BEER REVIEWS

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. THBC POWERLINE DIPA

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.5

This powerful New England style Double IPA pours a hazy amber with a nice caramel head. Loaded with tropical notes on the nose, where pineapple is the dominant aroma. On the palate you’ll enjoy pineapple and mango, with just a slight, pleasant bitterness. On the slightly maltier side, this finishes very smooth with a slightly warming effect thanks to an 8% ABV.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.75

A thick white head crowns this hazy IPA and never totally dissipates. A combination of pineapple, mango and pine scents from the hops dominates the smell. Likewise, the hop flavors remain while drinking the beer and stay during the extended finish. People who enjoy hoppy beers need to drink this. Pair it with hearty dishes like smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, blue cheese or desserts like carrot cake or crème brulee.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 5

This is a cloudy, straw-colored beer. I rarely give out a 5 but I really like this THBC offering - despite not being a big IPA fan. Bonus points for the Indiana connection, 8% ABV and pint can presentation. Flavor-wise, it's piney with some sweet hops and a hint of pineapple. I consider this the best IPA I've ever had.

56 | JULY 2022

KONA BIG WAVE GOLDEN ALE

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.5

This ale pours a clear yellow with a thin white head. On the nose you find pleasant tropical notes. It is light on the palate and slightly malty, with subtle tropical notes. It has a smooth finish, and is very sessionable with a 4.4% ABV. Very refreshing, and one of my favorites from Kona.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A thick white head rests on this golden ale and slowly evaporates. Malt scent controls the nose, with some hop scents also present. The first sip of the beer gives the malt and hops a chance to go back and forth on the tongue. The lower alcohol content makes this beer a great choice for ballgames and picnics where several can be imbibed. Pair it with seafood, poultry, salads and light pasta dishes.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5

This is a clear, amber-colored beer. It reminds me of drinking Budweiser but with a little more hops. It's a smooth beer - an easy session beer for the summer. I would almost consider this a very light IPA. It's pretty good but I'm not overwhelmed by it.

NEW BELGIUM SUMMER BLISS

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5

This is a tropical wheat beer brewed with mango. It pours a slightly hazy straw color with a thin white head. There are notes of tangerine and mango on the nose, and the mango is very evident on the palate. Very little bitterness, with a hint of coriander and an almost effervescence due to the high carbonation. This would be especially refreshing on a hot summer day with its low ABV.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thin white head forms on this wheat beer when poured into a wheat beer glass. The scent profile contains a good amount of citrus notes. A refreshing burst of carbonation hits the tongue first, followed by a strong citrus taste that lingers during the finish. This beer could see a rise in popularity during the hot summer months when drinkers want something refreshing. Pair it with goat cheese, salads, seafood or fruit desserts.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This beer pours a hazy straw color with decent carbonation. It's very refreshing and has a nice mango flavor which I normally don't like. It also has a nice floury flavor. Once again, I'm not a fan of floury beers but I like this one. I think those flavors blended with the wheat is what makes the difference.

NEWS4U JULY 2022 | BEER REVIEWS

REVOLUTION BREWING ANTI-HERO IPA

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5

This IPA pours a slightly hazy yellow with a thin white head. Aromas of pine are dominant. Pine resin and floral hop flavors assault the palate along with a sharp hop bitterness that hangs on through the finish. A traditional, hoppy IPA lover will really enjoy this one and appreciate the 6.7% ABV.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A thick white head forms on this amber-colored IPA and evaporates slowly. Citrus fruit and pine notes from the hops used during brewing fill the nose. The initial tasting of the beer also boasts a

significant amount of hop flavors, especially in the long finish. People who enjoy hoppy beers need to drink this. Pair it with a hamburger with hot barbecue sauce or Mexican dishes like spicy tacos

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This is a clear, amber-colored beer. It has your standard heavy hops flavor and an elevated ABV. It's pretty good but a little too hoppy for me. I could only drink one of these, but I think if they dialed back the hops a little I might enjoy it more.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
