A QUICK NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

I have to imagine that many of you are breathing a sigh of relief now that the blazing hot summer of 2022 is just a few weeks from passing the baton to fall. Hey, I get it - the humidity was off the charts for a good six weeks or so, making it near impossible to perform any outside task without a waterfall of sweat cascading down the forehead. Not a good look, really. And let me tell you that the majority of my morning runs this summer were like jogging around the inside of a frying pan - so much so that I had to start packing a beach towel to drape over the driver's seat in my car for the return trip home from the park. Do you know what excessive sweat does to the interior of a vehicle?! Actually, I'm not entirely sure but nonetheless I choose not to find out. In conclusion, regardless of the boiling days we experienced over the last couple of months, I'm still bummed that September is here. But I'll survive somehow, don't you worry. Clearly, I just need to find the sort of inner strength possessed by the 20 amazing ladies featured on this issue's cover. Yes, it's time once again to shine a light on some of the tri-state's most accomplished businesswomen - all handpicked by the Junior League of Evansville, one of the most respected and long-running organizations around. Be sure to check out the backstory of each nominee and find out what makes them such a deserving recipient for this honor. It's truly inspiring to know that such worthy professionals call our little corner of Indiana home; maybe you'll feel compelled to get off the couch and actually do something with your life, too. Ha - I kid. By the way, we've also got the lowdown on the annual St. Meinrad Rocks Fest, the return of BrewFest and much more inside. What are you waiting for? - TE

SOPHIE FRENCH BSN, RN SUPERVISOR /VANDERBURGH COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT PRE TO 3 PROGRAM

Blanca Ortez migrated to the US from Mexico in 1997 and worked as a waitress at a Mexican restaurant in Henderson, Kentucky for one year. That experience is what showed her that she wanted to own her very own restaurant one day.

The Vanderburgh County Cyber Crime Task Force is a state-of-the-art digital evidence lab working on law enforcement investigations across the country. In an industry traditionally dominated by men, Jessica Powers has stood out for her role in building the lab from scratch starting in 2020. In the past two years, she has written and been awarded approximately $2.1 million in new federal and state grant funding for various projects in Vanderburgh County. Prior to her current role, Jessica was a news reporter and weekend anchor for 14 WFIE in Evansville. In less than two years, she earned the top nightly news reporter position in the tri-state market. Powers also earned the coveted exclusive seat in the U.S. Navy Blue Angels fighter jets when they flew into the tri-state in 2016. Jessica and her husband Dillon now come home to a rambunctious one-year-old girl every night, so free time doesn't really exist. She rises before the sun in order to enjoy her workouts at Orange Theory Fitness and drinks way too many Starbucks lattes. But she knows that one day her daughter Riley will understand the value of hard work, strong coffee, and the perfect little black dress.

JESSICA POWERS DIRECTOR / VANDERBURGH COUNTY CYBER CRIME TASK FORCE

Blanca didn't have any family here or anyone she could turn to for mentorship or help of any kind so she made it a point to go to work every day and learn as much as she could about owning and running a restaurant. Blanca is very proud to say that today she and her husband own two restaurants, one in Newburgh and one in La Grange. The couple is grateful to the community for supporting and embracing them since their first day in 2003 which is why they give back and support the community as much as they can by donating to schools and several departments of public servants. Blanca and her husband like to support and encourage their employees to strive for more and work towards their own goals and hope to inspire them and show them that they, too, can achieve their dreams and prosper in this great country.

Outside of the office, Kristina volunteers with Leadership Everyone, donates artwork to local animal shelter fundraisers, and supports Demolition City Roller Derby. Since 2010, she has managed VPS Architecture as President and has dedicated countless hours to fine-tuning not only her craft, but the talent and creativity of other women (and men) in the field of Architecture and Design. Through her philanthropic efforts, she has provided A&D services to many non-profit organizations in the community, including designing the JD Sheth Foundation’s “Home of the Brave” housing development, which will provide new, affordable housing to women and veterans. The west side of Evansville, that is. Yes, organizers are looking to shake things up this year with a change of scenery, putting down roots on Franklin Street. The 18th annual event, much to the excitement of BrewFest fans around the city and beyond, will be held at West Side Library Park, an ideal new location that should provide a great environment for an evening of craft beer, wine and spirit sampling. In short, if you enjoy adult beverages, this is where you need to be on September 17.

Carol (Ubelhor) Troesch has put together a fantastic lineup of local, regional and national acts - the latter represented by the incomparable Off the Road (featuring Jason Hartless, Greg Smith and Lou Franco) and Academy Award winner Larry Mitchell. Hartless and Smith, fresh off the road, appropriately enough, backing Ted Nugent, are also involved in a number of other collaborations and tours while Franco, a wizard guitarist originally from the Philadelphia area, has been playing professionally since the age of nine. Together, they'll close out the festival Saturday night in style with a dynamic set that will prove just how much St. Meinrad

T he St. Meinrad Rocks Fest returns to scenic St. Meinrad Park - just an hour northeast of Evansville - this month for two amazing days of live music on two stages, art, delicious food and much more. Rest assured this 11th edition promises to be every bit as entertaining and fun as ever and admission is FREE for all attendees. Proceeds from a raffle and a percentage of vendor sales then benefit the town museum fund, a fund created via the Spencer County Community Foundation that will help to preserve the beauty of, and history in, St. Meinrad, EventIndiana.organizer

Asrocks.Troesch explains, however, there's so much variety on tap with a wide range of performers - it's hardly a one-dimensional festival. "Rocks" is more of an adjective or verb, as in... the town is great, and we're rockin' during the event. The name is also a nod to both the paver project and St. Meinrad Sandstone, which is historically a big part of our small town." As in years past, attendees will be treated to several different styles of music - yes, rock, but also blues and country - from the likes of Phil the Excitement, Dispel, Johnny Grenade, Beyond the Pale, Haller, Hit & Excite, Muddy Earl, Ronnie Troesch, Keep on Trail, Freddie Bourne, Atlas of the Dogs and Band Sold Separately. Many are returning favorites while others are anticipated Othernewcomers.highlights include a Silly Safaris Animal Show, plus the talents of Dr. Popper Balloon Artist and Julie “The Face Paint Chick” - all sure to be a big hit with the kids. Adults, on the other hand, can enjoy a Beer Garden sponsored by Louie's Tavern. No matter your age, this festival will keep you entertained all weekend long!

It's time once again to leave all our worries behind and let the good times roll with the nation's top arena rock tribute act, Hairball. Yes, the boys are back to clear the air and rock us senseless for a couple of hours with an absolutely killer set of songs by some of the greatest bands of all time: AC/DC, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Def Leppard, Guns N' Roses, Journey, KISS, Queen, Van Halen and many more - all performed with a rotating cast of spoton singers and plenty of pyrotechnics. As advertised, it's truly a bombastic celebration that will get your heart - and fists - pumping as you rock-out to all your favorite music from the 70s and 80s. Just before 2022 arrived, Hairball brought Dave Moody on board, former vocalist for the revered AC/DC tribute band Thunderstruck. Rest assured you will be thunderstruck by his performance of "Back in Black" - but not only can Moody do a mean Brian Johnson, his raspy singing style perfectly lends itself to material by Twisted Sister,

It matters where you look. Rock & roll is in good hands. You have Greta Van Fleet - which I'm not necessarily a big fan of - but they are an up-and-coming rock band that people love. I love the Struts, Joyous Wolf - so many great, new, young acts...the Rival Sons, things of this nature. Music is out there - people of our age group saying that there's nobody doing this anymore, there's nobody doing that anymore...bullsh*t! They're out therethese kids are coming up and embracing our music, our rock & roll. Eddie Van Halen's son Wolfgang Van Halen - he's a phenomenal musician with a great record. All this music is coming out and it's new, it's young and we identify with it coming from our generation.

For tickets and more info, visit beaverdamtourism.com. The Beaver Dam Amphitheater is located in Beaver Dam, KY. We've got a lot of scores to settle - you people have it coming to you and we're gonna give it to you hard and we're gonna make you hurt a little bit.

Rock is not dead; it's just getting started.

"

First of all, we're blessed to have those guys still around after the life they've led - let's be quite honest. So anytime they step on stage if you're not going to bow in front of them there's something wrong with you; you're doing it wrong. They have provided us all with such a great tapestry of wonderful music that has allowed us to live out the greatest moments probably in rock and roll history, being the 80s because it was such a carefree moment in time. And they were the soundtrack to that so if you're not saluting that and giving these people their props then you're absolutely doing it wrong. Maybe they don't have a lot of fire on their fastball anymore; maybe their shoes ain't as shiny as they used to be; maybe they don't smile with the same teeth that they had back in day. But I'll tell you this: It's the same people and they deserve that respect and you should show it to them. Rock & roll has often been declared dead, especially by the older generations who don't see any new bands rising up to take the place of the 70s and 80s icons that Hairball honors.

Cinderella, Quiet Riot, KISS and more. As he notes, "It's been ingrained in my DNA since the sun came out." You were obviously familiar with Hairball before joining the band. Now that you're on the inside, is it every bit as bombastic as it looks from the outside? More so. I mean, when you've got two to three thousand dollars worth of pyro blowing up every night and you've got guys coming out in full, authentic costumes looking like the characters you grew up worshipping, it tends to be a little more overwhelming than a video you see. Plus, we're there to burn your eyes out of your head and make your eardrums bleed and leave you sticky, broke and confused. That's our job description. We've got a lot of scores to settle - you people have it coming to you and we're gonna give it to you hard and we're gonna make you hurt a little bit. Singing AC/DC songs is your specialty but did it take time to get comfortable singing the other material? Oh, no, I've been driving around with a bottle of whiskey my whole life singing these songs. It's been ingrained in my DNA since the sun came out. So, I didn't learn from the teachers; I learned from Dee Snider; I learned from Mötley Crüe; I learned from David Lee Roth; I learned from Paul Stanley. So, I knew all this stuff coming in - it was a matter of getting the makeup and the costuming correct and probably a little bit of the mimicking of the movements of the character, maybe. But other than that, no, I've been drinking whiskey to this stuff for a long time. Many of the bands that Hairball covers are still touring - though in some cases the original singers just don't have the vocal chops anymore. How do you feel about that?

On this occasion, as I walked inside Parlor there wasn’t a long line; usually it's much busier. One thing I truly love about this place is the open view into the kitchen. If you have followed my reviews before, this bold statement just speaks to me and how much they believe in their staff to keep a sparkling kitchen shown off to the public. I would also like to say that

WITH MATT LAINE So I want to start this off by saying I try to avoid doing reviews on chain restaurants, but Parlor Doughnuts started right here in our beautiful and humble city. And it has now blossomed into a national chain - and for good reason. This place just hits the mark 100% for me, from the stellar decor to the amazing food and drinks. If you haven’t had the chance to visit Parlor, you need to try them out as soon as you can.

Parlor always looks immaculate. The light colors of the decor make the cleanliness of this store really shine. The staff greeted me promptly as I entered and gave me a chance to look over the amazing selection of the flaky doughnuts. I studied all the daily concoctions and the coffee menu to find my favorites on the day. Once I ordered they were quick to prepare everything and the coffee was out in just a couple minutes. There's always one doughnut that I get and I leave the other up to my taste buds on the day. The Strawberry Cheesecake Doughnut is absolutely stunning and the fresh strawberry atop the cream is always a winner. So this is just a staple doughnut each time I visit, and on this day I also went with the Blueberry Doughnut, which was

After speeding through both of these doughnuts, I have to say I would actually rate the blueberry higher. The coffee was outstanding as well, and kudos to them for not serving it at 4,000 degrees to burn my tongue off. It was still hot, but I was able to sip through it immediately, instead of staring at it for an hour before I could enjoy it. As I mentioned before, the doughnuts here are wonderfully flaky - or as some will call them, cronuts - and the crispy outside is just the perfect exterior to a soft and fluffy inside. The icing/cream was extremely flavorful on both the cronuts I had, and the strawberry cheesecake cream has such a cheesecake flavor it truly and genuinely shocked me the first time I tried them. The blueberry icing just oozes blueberries and dances over your taste buds in an amazing blend with the dough. I would be hard-pressed to think of a better doughnut I’ve actually tried personally or even seen for that matter. When I say this place is special, I speak the honest truth.

3. GREASE A LARGE SAUTÉ PAN OR GRIDDLE WITH BUTTER AND PLACE OVER MEDIUM HEAT. YOU WILL NEED TO REPEATEDLY GREASE BETWEEN BATCHES. USING AN ICE CREAM SCOOP, POUR THE BATTER ONTO THE PAN, COOKING 2-3 PANCAKES AT A TIME. COOK THEM FOR 2-3 MINUTES UNTIL BUBBLES BEGIN TO FORM IN THE BATTER. FLIP THE PANCAKES AND REPEAT UNTIL THE PANCAKES ARE FLUFFY AND COOKED THROUGH. THEY COOK FAST SO PAY ATTENTION!

My kids love pancakes, but I don't always love making them. They can be time-consuming and carb/sugar heavy. These pancakes come together fast and cook very quickly. They use coconut flour, which is high in fiber, and use unsweetened full fat coconut milk. The fiber and full fat will help keep you fuller longer and less likely to have a sugar crash afterwards. The mini chocolate chips give a great sweetness therefore maple syrup isn’t necessary. My kids and I love topping the pancakes with Kerry Gold grass-fed butter.

Free, all-day music festival returns to Garvin Park on October 1 with a great lineup of area bands and more

Just come to Garvin Park on October 1 and you'll see - and most importantly, hear - that we're right up there with the likes of Indianapolis, Louisville and St. Louis. Of course, all that rocking out will inevitably whet your appetite for some of the delicious grub provided by the Evansville Food Truck Association - 12 food trucks in all on-site. No one should go home hungry, in other words. Or thirty, for that matter.

A lways the perfect way to welcome in the fall season, ParksFest is once again positioned to help tri-staters recover from the summertime blues. This free, all-ages, all-day music, arts and food festival presented by the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana is an annual highlight on the community calendar, drawing thousands of people to beautiful Garvin Park in early October as the leaves are turning colors. The scenery is truly ideal for such a cool event - especially as the sun starts to fade and the beautiful sounds from the stage waft into the crisp evening air. This year, those beautiful sounds will be made by some of the area's most notable bands and solo artists, including Mock Orange, Faerie Ring, Cynthia Murray, Georgia Funkadelic, The Smoke Rings, Cage Willis and LaTasha Shemwell. While some of these talented acts are veterans of the Evansville music scene and beyond, others, such as Cage Willis, are relative newcomers creating a serious buzz in the tri-state. Taken as a whole, this may well be the most exciting lineup to date for ParksFest, featuring everything from alternative/heavy/ indie rock to folk, funk, hip-hop and R&B. If you somehow thought that Evansville lagged behind bigger cities, artistically speaking, think again.

Pro tip: there will be a beer garden provided by Bokeh Lounge and Working Distributors. And as always, ParksFest will feature free kids activities and workshops, as well as art, craft and nonprofit vendors. So bring the young ones along, too, and let them experience the joy of this most excellent festival. For more info, follow ParksFest Music Festival 2022 on Facebook.

Bill Sovern was a pillar in the Evansville arts scene and, most importantly, a terrific friend. No one was a stranger to Bill, and his devotion to the arts made people gravitate to him. Bill was Indiana’s Beat Poet Laureate, a multimedia painter, a collector, filmmaker, US Veteran, and gallery owner. In the late 90s, Sovern started a poetry performance collective called Shakespeare’s Monkey that established a poetry scene that still thrives to this day. In the early 2000s, Bill was the force pushing Haynie’s Corner to become Evansville’s Arts District. Many know Bill from his monthly poetry show that turned away no poet for 20 years.

THE WORLD’S WORST ASSISTANT by Sona Movsesian Easily one of the funniest people from behind the scenes of Conan O'Brien's life. Sona's book is funny, with lots of stories about her 12 year period being Conan's assistant, some how-to tips (like how to nap and watch TV at work), and hand-drawn comics that really make the book an easy read.

After the success of her Booksmart directorial debut, Olivia Wilde is back behind the camera for the 1950s psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling. One Direction’s Harry Styles plays Jack, who is married to Florence Pugh’s Alice. The gorgeous pair portray an eager, deeply in love couple embarking on a mind-changing journey as they move into an experimental community in Victoria, California. It’s a suburban utopia with a caveat: there’s dark secrets lurking beneath the veneer of pool parties and free ballet lessons. Think Stepford Wives but those trapped in this white picket fence circus know they are under a microscope. Chris Pine appears as the charming yet creepy cult-like leader, hosting a Truman Show for the new generation. Gemma Chan and Nick Kroll also star as neighbors under the spell of science and social experiments. But Pugh starts to see the cracks through the looking glass. IN THEATERS 9/23

LOVE IN THE VILLA

Netflix has been churning out buttery and beautiful rom-coms that can stand up to some of the classics. The Umbrella Academy’s number one superpowered sibling Tom Hooper stars as her star-crossed lover. It’s opposites attract in Verona. Graham is our Juliet and Hooper is our Romeo. Well, Graham is actually our Julie - a shy, loving teacher who must share a villa with Charlie (Hooper), a cynical yet swoon-worthy businessman, due to a double-booking. The two culture-clash yet undoubtedly fall in love. Graham is sour from a breakup with Ginny and Georgia’s Raymond Ablack and this European adventure and sweet meet cute is the perfect remedy to snap her out of her sad spell. It’s truly the perfect top-off for a summer of romance.

Hawke’s foreign exchange student Eleanor is still reeling from an unfair rumor about her. It's a black comedy that looks like liquid gold and wicked fun. The costume design is straight from the crop-top and mini skirt pastel color-combos hanging in the Teen Vogue closet. It’s a nod to Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train with a Clueless twist. NETFLIX 9/16

Riverdale’s Camilla Mendes and Stranger Things’ Maya Hawke give a punky punch in Do Revenge. The stars play two teen girls who team up to tear down each other’s enemies. Simply one of the most fascinating and perplexing cases I have ever come across, the 2008 murder of Lindsay Buziak remains unsolved, though several theories exist as to why the 24-year-old Canadian real estate agent was targeted. What's particularly of note here is that Buziak's instincts were spot-on - she felt very uneasy about the events leading up to her demise, but ultimately made a fateful decision to go forward with what turned out to be a deadly client interaction. Her story serves as a reminder to trust your intuition and never put yourself in harm's way without an exit strategy. Well, in fact, Buziak did take precautions; unfortunately, she deviated from the plan in the final moments and paid with her life. It was a cold February day when Buziak received a peculiar call from a woman who claimed to be in the market for a million dollar home. Red flags abounded - the caller appeared to be faking a foreign accent; she somehow knew Buziak's personal cell number; and, perhaps most troubling of all, she stated there was only a 48-hour window for the sale. If Buziak hoped to close such a lucrative deal, time was of the essence. The promise of a big commission, however, didn't keep the ambitious real estate agent from questioning the validity of the call. But after voicing her concerns to her boyfriend, Jason Zailo, and family, the former convinced Buziak to meet the client, insisting that he'd park nearby and watch over the proceedings. The potential pay-out was just too good to pass up, Zailo Onmaintained.thedayof the murder, however, nothing went to plan. Buziak arrived at the pricey home she had located for the client to find that the woman, who earlier noted she would be coming to the appointment solo, was accompanied by a male - and no car was in the area. The two had apparently walked up to the house from somewhere, an oddity corroborated by witnesses. Meanwhile, Zailo was running late; he messaged Buziak to alert her, but, for reasons that we'll never know, she entered the home with the client and the unexpected male companion, regardless. 10 minutes later Zailo and a friend pulled up; Zailo sent another text to Buziak to check on her well-being but received no response. Eventually, he and his buddy called 911 and then secured entrance into the home through an open back patio door. Inside, the house was eerily still. Heading upstairs, Zailo discovered Buziak's bloody, lifeless body in one of the bedrooms. She had been repeatedly stabbed. 14 years later, investigators are still no closer to solving Buziak's murder. Zailo, the most obvious suspect (some think he orchestrated her death), and family members have all been cleared. As discussed at the beginning, there are a few theories as to why this crime occurredincluding a possible drug connection - but none have panned out to date. For now this case remains a truly puzzling whodunit. JUNKIECRIME

Over the last several years, Oost has racked up 14,000 members in her ladies-only VIP Facebook Group (Angels D'amour VIP Group) - many whom have visited her studio for a photo session. But Oost is looking to expand her clientele even more by reaching beyond her Illinois base; specifically, she's hoping to crack the Evansville market. Currently, Oost, whose studio is located in Chandler, resides in Newburgh. As a testament to her expertise, women from up north are still making the three hour drive to visit Angels D'amour - that's loyalty, folks. But Oost can only take so much credit; it's a team effort made possible by the skills of hair & make-up artist Renae Brown who also serves as assistant photographer. Together, they hone in on a client's personality and find just the right setting and look to ensure complete satisfaction. For more info or to book a session,

Oost, a free spirit comfortable with her body and bodies in general ("The first time I told a woman to take off her bra it wasn't a big deal for me"), found that she had a knack for helping women of all ages recapture their sexuality; but ultimately, it's about empowerment. "It's a way for women to rediscover what they've suppressed inside of them from being moms and wives and workers," Oost notes. "Sometimes women - and men - lose track of who they are inside."

A s photographers go, Ashley Oost was a bit of a late bloomer. The selfdescribed "military brat" bounced around numerous cities growing up, never calling one place home for long, but when she ended up in central Illinois for a spell later in life, something clicked, so to speak. "I received my first camera as a gift from my mom - it was a used camera," Oost recalls. "I just wanted to take better pictures of my kids." She was about 30 at the time - a little late in the game to start a new hobby, perhaps - but Oost took to photography immediately. And she had plenty of time on her hands to practice, quickly becoming a wiz behind the lens. Soon people began requesting family pictures and wedding photos. "I did that for two years - but realized those genres didn't really fit me, necessarily," Oost explains. "I started toying around with different models and doing boudoir and that just took off. I haven't really done anything else since."

For those out of the loop, boudoir, by definition, is a photographic style featuring intimate, sensual, romantic, and sometimes erotic images of its subjects - tastefully done, mind you.

SHE'S MY PRINCESS ANGEL BABY AND I WANT TO GIVE HER MYATTENTIONUNDIVIDED

Evansville's Megahn Newlin grew up in a tiny Illinois town where her family typically owned two dogs at a time - one big and one small. "We had a whole mix of breeds but usually a St. Bernard, Rat Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer or Border Collie," she says. "And at mom's house we raised goats and had chickens." It's no surprise then that upon moving to Evansville to attend college at the age of 18, one of Newlin's main objectives was to adopt a dog for companionship - especially in light of her mental health struggles. "I knew that having a furry friend would give me the support that I needed - not that I wasn't going out socializing but a dog is totally different," she explains. Frustratingly, for her first two years at USI, Newlin's on-campus housing status didn't allow for pets. But everything changed junior year. Finally settled in a residence offcampus and free to adopt, Newlin immediately began searching the VHS website for just the right dog. "I was very interested in a German Shepherd/Husky mix that I saw but when I went to the shelter and got her out of the kennel she was way too high energy - which I didn't think I could handle while in classes," she says. "So I made one more lap around the kennels - and sweet baby was sitting there with her big black eyes looking up. She looked so sad, but I think she knows what she's doing." The "sweet baby" Newlin came across was Lottie, a 9-month-old Boxer/Old English Bulldog mix who clearly made quite the first impression. "Within a minute I was in love," Newlin recalls. Eager to sign the papers and adopt Lottie, Newlin returned the following day to make it official. That was back in 2018 - and the two have been inseparable ever since.

"She's my princess angel baby and I want to give her my undivided attention," Newlin says with the twinkle of a proud momma. Asked to sum up Lottie's personality, she amusingly replies "potato" - a term of endearment that refers to Lottie's preference for laying on the couch, watching movies, snuggling and kissing. She's also quite dramatic and even resorts to fakesnoring to get attention on occasion. "She's just super sweet, fantastic with other dogs and great with small children and Newlinbabies,"says. "She's mommy's girl."

Surprisingly, both state senators that represent Evansville - Jim Tomes and Vaneta Becker - both Republicans, voted against it, much DID BECKER'S VOTE ON ABORTION END HER POLITICAL CAREER?

52 | SEPTEMBER 2022 • www.evansvillemediagroup.comseized from Trump's Florida property. But let's back up for a moment. Just a month ago the country was reeling from the Roe v. Wade reversal by the Supreme Court - and Democrats were rallying, using the collective outrage as fuel for the upcoming midterm elections, buoyed by the somewhat unexpected Kansas abortion vote that rejected the GOP's efforts to tighten restrictions. Things were looking up for the blue team and all. But then Attorney General Merrick Garland signed off on the raid of Mar-a-Lagoand oh how the tables have turned. For the moment, anyway. Much like the left was galvanized by the Roe v. Wade decision, the right is now all up in arms about the perceived unfair treatment of their beloved Donald and vowing revenge. But the funny thing is that neither side has a clue what's in the boxes - this could be another Al Capone's vaults scenario (Geraldo Rivera's most embarrassing TV moment, anyone?) or something truly earth-shattering that changes the landscape of politics as we know it. It's up in the air at the moment - though I assume we'll know more by the time this column is published. While I'm exploring this divisive subject, let me take this opportunity, if you don't mind, to plug a show I have no stake in (just so you don't think I'm kowtowing to corporate pressure). Pro tip: Dan Abrams Live on NewsNation is the place to go for rational reporting. Ever since this major story broke, Abrams has calmly addressed the controversy from both sides, calling out the hyperbole that both the left and the right are engaging in. I find it reassuring to listen to a reasonable human being amongst all the madness. On his show, he invites people on that offer differing opinions in a respectful manner; then you're allowed to make up your own mind as to what it all means rather than a host simply telling you what to believe. What a concept.

THE PLOT THICKENS with Barold Hume

B oy, oh boy - things are getting interesting, politically speaking. Most days I'm relatively sickened by the partisan nature of our socalled democracy, but right now I'm on the edge of my seat, eager to see how this all plays out. Obviously, I'm referring to the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago. Surely you've heard about it - even the most news-averse individual couldn't escape the deluge of coverage. As I type this, both left and right media outlets are going hog-wild with speculation about what's in the 15 or so boxes that were TYPE THIS...

Thanks to the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade, Indiana made national headlines. And as an extension, so did our General Assembly. Indiana became the first state to dip its toes into the controversy and with GOP supermajorities in both chambers along with a Republican governor, it was a foregone conclusion that some kind of ban was going to take place. What we got, ultimately, was a ban on abortion with a few exceptions.

I GUESS I'M JUST MORBIDLY FASCINATED BY THE GENERATION GAP AT PLAY AND HOW YOUNG PEOPLE TODAY SEEM UNCOMFORTABLETOTALLYWITH

to the dismay of evangelical constituents who view this as one of the, if not the main, issue when going to the voting booth.

REELED IN BY CATFISH with Johnny Fletcher after all, and every day could potentially be my last) following the investigative adventures of Nev Schulman on MTV's Catfish. If you're out of the loop somehow, this ridiculous show is now in its umpteenth season of documenting the "truth and lies of online dating" (mostly lies, btw). But really, it's just a sad commentary on the youth of America - and that's why I can't look away. What that says about me is a whole separate issue; I guess I'm just morbidly fascinated by the generation gap at play and how young people today seem totally uncomfortable with face-to-face interaction, preferring to keep a safe distance and communicate electronically in various forms. I should note, of course, that I wouldn't be surprised if much of Catfish is scripted, heavily edited, etc. It's TV, for Christ's sake. But the young folks that are featured in each episode do act like real millennials and GenZers - they're overly sensitive, easily offended and, above all, desperate for a personal connection with someone, no matter how superficial. So desperate that they willingly ignore GLARING red flags - i.e., the person they've been in a "relationship" with online looks like a model in their pics (that should be the first clue that something's, uh, fishy) yet refuses to video chat and avoids meet-ups at all costs. However, this rarely deters anyone from continuing to pursue the "love of their life," because, you know, they just can't walk away from something so promising. I particularly get a kick out of the horribly clichéd texts these potential lovebirds send back and forth, classics such as "I can't live without you, boo," "You mean the world to me, babe" and the ever-popular "I'll always be there for you." But eventually Nev gets the call to investigate - and inevitably discovers that the reason why the catfishing individual has hidden their true identity is that they're suffering from low self-esteem or any number of maladies. And, as always, the tears flow. And I keep watching.

Tomes will more than likely get a pass based on his reasoning that the bill didn't go far enough. So consider him safe for now. As for Becker, well... Essentially, she believes that this bill will do more harm than good for Hoosiers overall and will hinder physicians to perform their duties. While her reasoning seems well thought-out, this isn't going to fly when she speaks to citizens when she returns home to district 50. Becker, who will be up for re-election again in 2024, should expect a primary challenger. Especially in an era for the Republican party where you have to decide if you support Donald Trump or not. And if you don't, be prepared to get chastised. If Becker does get a primary opponent, they could paint her as another Liz Cheney or a RINO. Or Becker could surprise us all and not run. After all, she's 72 now and has been in the General Assembly for more than a generation if you count her times in both the House and Senate. Either way, her vote on abortion will follow her and could be her undoing.

CALVIN HARRIS Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 Columbia Records Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 is a follow-up to Calvin Harris’ 2017 release. The Scottish DJ and record producer is back bringing all of the house vibes set to get you dancing and grooving. Harris is talented with beats but it's the talent he enlists to rap or sing that truly elevates his songs. Dua Lipa’s biting and fun vocals on “Potion” are so addictive, it’s hard not to feel spellbound after a listen or two with lyrics like, “In the whip on a Tuesday night, got the music high/ And you by my side, side/ Top down and the moon is high and the mood is right/And you're by my side, side, yeah (ah, ah)." Pharrell Williams, Halsey and Justin Timberlake pull off the triple-threat on “Stay With Me” that gives you goosebumps and good vibes. Other features include Busta Ryhmes, Snoop Dogg, Swae Lee, Offset, Pusha T, Charlie Puth, 21 Savage, Normani, Latto, Tinashe, and Chlöe. The boogie, soul and electro-funk vibes of the album will have you taking a psychedelic trip. But with the highs comes the lows - most strongly felt after the collective realization Harris would not be as good as he is if it wasn’t for the superstars he surrounds himself with. - Marisa

LIZZO Special Nice Life/Atlantic Records Lizzo is gifting us with the self-love, body positivity and empowerment we all need again with her fourth studio album. While Lizzo takes the heat and shows us she’s got the sauce in a recent Hot Ones episode, she surprisingly tells host Sean Evans she didn’t even plan to have lead single “About Damn Time” on the album. Let’s all thank her for including the song that sparked thousands of TikTok videos of people lip-synching along to the feelgood, tongue-twisting banger. Her tracks radiate kindness and love for her fans. But just like Queen Bee, Lizzo, too, came under fire for using the word “spaz” in her song “Grrrls.” She also instantly removed it after getting negative feedback from the disabled community. Her voice is just as big as her heart. A few knockouts include “(2 Be Loved) Am I Ready?,” “Naked,” “Breakup Twice” and “Birthday Girl.” There's not a single feature on the album, either, and to be honest, she just doesn't need it. Why mess with perfection?

BEYONCÉ Renaissance Parkwood Entertainment/ Columbia Records Queen Bee is infusing her BeyHive with golden honey once again. Her seventh studio album is her first solo release since her surprise Lemonade drop in 2016. Her latest is the start to a new trilogy, and if this is twilight, I’m already hyped for new moon. She has come under some heat though, removing an interpolation of Kelis' “Milkshake" from the Pharrell-produced “Energy.” This was not the only song she had to tweak on the album. She also had to take out the word “spaz” from her song “Heated” after getting called out for using ableist language. She made both changes with grace and I’ll pardon her royal highness. Especially considering the rest of her album is layered like honey with Afrobeats, ballroom, funk, disco, pop, house, hip-hop and R&B. It's a dance party that gets you buzzing without a drop of liquor. Lead single “Break My Soul” is an anthem that gives you the confidence to stand up for yourself and go after what you want. Listen to all 16 tracks and you won’t have just lived through a renaissance, you’ll be ready to start a revolution - Marisa Patwa

SEPTEMBER MUSIC REVIEWS

THE SCORPIONS Rock Believer Vertigo Berlin Rock Believer is the Scorpions’ 19th studio album, and their first new music in seven years. I have to admit, I wasn’t excited to pick it up (hence the 6-month delay in reviewing it). Once a cutting-edge hard rock band in the 70s-80s, the Scorps slipped into redundancy in the 90s-2000s. Even the title Rock Believer feels cheesy and unimaginative. The first few tracks seemed to confirm my apathy, with titles like “Gas in the Tank” and “Roots in my Boots” - nothing remarkable there. But I persisted, and I’m glad I did. Why they would bury the best tracks in the middle of the record is baffling, but what a pleasant surprise! “Shining of your Soul” is brilliantly reminiscent of something off 1979’s “Lovedrive,” with a catchy hook and reggae rhythms. “Seventh Son” hearkens back to “The Zoo,” and “Hot and Cold” shows that despite their age the Scorps can still rock with the best- Matt Alschbach

STEPHEN MALLINDER Tick Tick Tick Dais Records

Coming on the heels of the unexpected death of Richard H. Kirk, co-founder of the seminal post-punk group Cabaret Voltaire fronted by vocalist/bassist Stephen Mallinder, Tick Tick Tick serves as a fitting tribute of sorts to Mallinder's lost comrade. Across nine inventive tracks, all the elements of the Cabs' groundbreaking sound emerge, coalescing into a synth-based industrial funk that recalls landmark releases such as 1983's The Crackdown and 1984's Micro-Phonies Lyrically, too, Mallinder nods to the good old days, reveling in oblique wordplay - which he delivers in a range of voices via various effects (muffled distortion remains Mal's signature vocal approach). Ultimately, despite the embracing of old habits, so to speak, this collection of heavily-doctored disco feels remarkably fresh, building off of the Cabs' musical legacy rather than blatantly stealing from it.

PINK DOLPHINS

“I Am Strong Enough” begins with some funky guitar from Nelson as Tuite sings about wondering if she’s going to make it - and answering in the affirmative. Tuite picks the guitar masterfully on the instrumental tune “My Silent Love.” Tuite sings about a relationship hitting the rocks on “It Ain’t Over Til It’s Over,” but not wanting to give up yet. “Goin’ Out To Town Tonight” sees a guest appearance from Ozzie Melendez with a great trombone part. Paul Loranger’s bass playing on “I Want A Lover” sets the intimate mood very well.

PATTY TUITE Hard Case of the Blues Thread City Productions A Connecticut-based singer/songwriter influenced by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Bonnie Raitt, Patty Tuite returns with her fourth release, Hard Case of the Blues. The album opens with “Nothin’ But Trouble” featuring a guest appearance from Bobby Rush on harmonica that takes the song to the next level. “I Just Wanna Play” sees Tuite singing about wanting to perform after a long day. Paul Nelson’s guitar work boasts a classic feel from yesteryear. Tuite sings about realizing she’s better off single on “Glad I’m Through With You.” Rico Amero’s superb trumpet solo in the middle of the song showcases his talent beautifully alongside Brooks Milgate’s piano playing. “Diggin’ Up Outta This Hole” sounds like something straight from Bourbon Street in New Orleans as Amero offers both great trumpet playing and background vocals.

"I love my label," says Nick Lowe, and I love the Three Lobed Recordings label out of Jamestown, North Carolina. From their Bandcamp description: "Three Lobed Recordings is a boutique record label that specializes all flavors of psychedelia. The label was started in 2000 and is largely operated by cats." I dig cats and I equally dig the cats on this label. Guitarists Steve Gunn, Lee Renaldo, Daniel Bachman, Sir Richard Bishop and the late Jack Rose bring heavy doses of psych to this compilation. 34 tracks in total span the label's love-in beginning in 2000 with Bardo Pond up to the more recent releases from Meg Baird and Mary Lattimore. All proceeds from purchases of the compilation will benefit the Land Loss Prevention Project. What's not to love?- Tony Aiken

“Double Down” offers a searing guitar solo from Nelson. For more info, visit PattyTuite.com.- Paul Bragin

Anteloper International Anthem Chicago's jazz scene is alive and well and currently being documented astutely by the bustling International Anthem label. Anteloper, a duo comprised of Jason Nazary and jaimie branch, are no strangers to Chicago jazz. branch, as a trumpeter, leads the Fly or Die Collective and has worked with bassist William Parker and Exploding Star Orchestra. For Pink Dolphins, Nazary and branch cite Miles Davis and Brazilian tropicália as influences, especially Davis' "Green Dolphin Street" and "Little Church." Joining the Anteloper duo for Pink Dolphins is guitarist Jeff Parker from Tortoise who once again produces and adds additional bass, percussion and keys.- Tony Aiken

RYLEY WALKER So Certain EP Husky Pants Records

To say Ryley Walker has been busy during the pandemic would be a serious understatement. From starting an independent label to releasing a long-playing album (Course in Fable) and a couple of EPs (Post Work and So Certain), Walker used the shutdown to his creative advantage. The most recent release, So Certain, follows in Walker's evolution of sound begun during the exploratory covers of Dave Matthews' The Lillywhite Sessions. Where earlier releases from Walker mimicked Michael Chapman's or Van Morrison's folkier output, the new releases have more in common with Robert Fripp, Steve Hackett or Adrian Belew. The strongest track from the new EP is the aggressive "Pharaoh's Plastic." Gone are the hushed vocals of Primrose Green released in 2015. Walker attacks his instrument as he attacks the microphone. Catch Walker opening for Dinosaur Jr. in the fall. - Tony Aiken

A thick white head rests on this lager and never totally evaporates. A sweet malt scent controls the scent, with some hop bitterness also present. The first sip gives a burst of carbonation on the tongue, followed by a good balance of malt and hops. This beer should find a spot in everyone’s refrigerator as a great everyday choice. Pair it with a variety of spicy cuisines like Thai dishes or Mexican food.

SEPTEMBER BEER REVIEWS

This beer pours a clear amber color with decent carbonation. It has a malty aroma with some spices mixed in. I would consider this your average Oktoberfest beer. It has some fruit flavors to it, some spice and the Marzen flavoring. It has a very light hops flavor but a little bitterness in the finish.

MYRIAD PABLO LUNA GOOSE ISLAND OKTOBER FEST TERRAPIN HIGH & HAZY IPA

This pours hazy and yellow, with a quickly dissipating head. There are notes of citrus, mostly orange, on the nose. It is dry on the palate, and while not bursting with fruit, the notes of citrus and mango are ever-present. It is well-balanced, with a smooth finish and just a touch of bitterness.

A thick white head forms on this hazy IPA and evaporates slowly. A scent contains a generous amount of citrus and pine notes from the hops used during the brewing process. The initial tasting of the beer seems a bit more balanced, but the strong hop flavors return in the long finish. People who enjoy hoppy beers need to try this one. Pair it with sesame crusted tuna, Asian orange chicken or mild Cheddar cheese.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.75

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5 This beer pours a hazy straw color. It has an ABV of 5.8% but for some reason I expected it to be a little higher. I can taste the pine and the fruit flavors as in most IPAs but this one's pretty smooth. The can says it's “chewy” and I think they are right.

A white head crowns this beer when poured into a traditional beer mug. The scent of malt fills the nose. Sweet malt flavors hit the tongue when drinking the beer and are balanced by the wrestling of malt and hops in the finish. Drink this seasonal offering while you can during the cooler autumn months. Pair it with a variety of classic German dishes like a variety of sausages, sauerkraut, German fries or apple strudel.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5

This local lager from Myriad brewing has a clear straw color, with very little head. There are subtle citrus notes on the nose, as well as a hint of lemon and a slightly astringent bitterness on the palate. A session lager at 4.4% that goes down easy.

This beer almost appears clear with a light coloring of yellow. It's light and refreshing - I would consider this beer somewhat of a light lager. This is a great, thirst-quenching beer. It has an ABV of 4.4% and comes in a 16 oz can. I'm very impressed by this beer - good job by a local brewery.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

This Marzen style lager pours a clear amber hue with a creamy head. Notes of toasted malts on the nose, and light and slightly malty on the palate. There is a slight hoppy bitterness on the finish making this a very well-balanced lager. True to style, this is sure to please anyone who enjoys the Oktoberfest style.

SIERRA NEVADA HOPTIMUM TRIPLE IPA PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.75

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This triple pours a clear orange-amber hue with a thin creamy head. Bursting with notes of citrus on the nose, with an even bigger splash on the palate. Grapefruit, orange, mango and even some pineapple are dominant, and it's so well-balanced that the bitterness from the hops is almost imperceptible. This is a really big beer, coming in at 11% ABV and at the same time it is dangerously and deliciously smooth.

A decent white head tops this golden triple IPA and dissipates reluctantly. A burst of citrus scents in the hops dominates the scent profile. Likewise, the hop flavors remain while drinking the beer and continue in the finish. The 11% alcohol content packs a punch. Hop lovers and people who enjoy stronger beers definitely need to drink this limited time offering. Pair it with spicy dishes like Thai chicken salad or a Buffalo chicken sandwich

This is a clear, amber-colored beer. I can smell the hops right away. I can taste the warming alcohol and notice that it has an 11% ABV. I can taste the pine and the other fruit flavors. Overall, it's pretty smooth. Maybe the IPAs are growing on me or the breweries are getting better at making them.

In light of the recent house explosion on the east side of Evansville that caused significant collateral damage, I'm wondering what legal options a homeowner has in such a unique situation as this. If a homeowner's property is damaged, or if the homeowner/residents suffer injuries, etc., as a result of an explosion nearby, what actions can be taken, legally speaking?

Focusing on personal injury, civil litigation, whistleblower claims and workers' compensation law, Siesky Law Firm strives to provide excellent legal services while remaining client and community centered. The Evansville-based trio of top attorneys - including Lane Siesky, Daniel Gearhart and Douglas Briody - boasts years of invaluable experience inside and outside the courtroom. Highly-respected with an impeccable track record, the firm's aggressive representation of its clients continues to benefit the community in myriad ways.

First, what a tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected. A homeowner that has suffered a loss should contact his/her homeowner's insurance company and put the insurance carrier on notice of the loss. The insurance company may want to hire an expert to investigate both the nature and extent of the homeowner’s loss and the cause of the explosion. Also, the homeowner should strongly consider contacting a law firm that has experience with house explosions and fires. There is often a window of time that the evidence remains available for inspection and therefore, time is of the essence. Certainly, dealing with insurance companies or hiring lawyers is not anybody’s first thought after a tragedy of this magnitude. However, the reality is that these cases are complex, expensive and continue to cause heartache, financial ruin and other problems if the situation is not dealt with properly and in a timely manner.
