Oh, brother. I'm currently looking out my living room window at the near two inches of snow that fell last night. Just 48 hours earlier, it was 75 and sunny. Midwest living is cray-cray, as the kids say. Or, to quote my favorite cliché of the last few years, it is what it is. So true, so true. In case you were wondering, I'm not a fan of this sudden about-face; I was perfectly happy enjoying the unseasonably warm weather of late. No need to switch things up, you know? On the upside, I'm not the least bit tempted to go outside and waste time when I should be catching up on work. Rather, I'm sat

here in front of my computer on a Saturday, marveling at the talent that we've assembled for the magazine's annual 20 40 & Under feature. In fact, there were so many amazing local folks to choose from this year that we had to expand our feature. At last count, we had selected 22 or 23 nominees - nothing's set in stone yet as I peck away at this ancient Lenovo laptop - to represent the cream of the influencer crop in the tri-state. The more the merrier, of course - which is especially appropriate during the holiday season when being merry is a thing and all. Anyhow, check out all the cool people doing cool stuff in the

community beginning on page 8; perhaps you'll be inspired to up your game a bit and position yourself to be considered for next year's cover story. Frankly, you've got a pretty big hill to climb but always shoot for the stars - that's how I live, baby. Well, that's a slight exaggeration. Regardless, don't be afraid to carpe diem and wow us with your accomplishments in 2023. Also, don't hesitate to flip through the other sections of this month's mag - there's plenty to keep you occupied as you put off fighting the crush of crowds at the mall and other shopping destinations. It's one thing to be successful and innovative in your chosen field, but the true measure of a person is how they treat the less fortunate. Owner at Mr. Sudsy Mobile Wash in Evansville, Blaine Lynch has been in the power washing business since 2014. He strongly believes in home-grown businesses and customer satisfaction, striving to make sure every customer is completely happy with each job that Mr. Sudsy takes on. The instant gratification from his customers' reactions is what keeps his passion going day after day. This past year, Blaine expanded to Kentucky and started Mr. Sudsy of KY, now able to serve even more people in the tri-state.

Anyone who knows Blaine knows how much he enjoys the holidays and likes to "Light That Pitch Up."

Owner of Kipplee's and Doc's Sports Bar, Evansville native Matt Klees is a Central High School graduate and father to 7-year-old Mason. He started as a bartender at Turoni's Pizzery & Brewery 10 years ago before working his way up to management and paving the pathway to his dream of owning his own restaurants and local bars alongside his wife and business partner, Kaycey. His passion for pizza and community is what he is all about. As anyone who knows him can attest, Matt is always willing to try to help out the community whether it’s feeding or sponsoring a youth team, helping with a fundraiser or promoting a local event. He has helped raise money, or donated to, many local organizations such as Boys & Girls Club and countless other nonprofits. If you see Matt out and about he is usually chatting with anyone and everyone or cracking a joke

ANDRE THOMAS

Andre Thomas has been working with high school students for 16 years - including stints as a teacher and coach at Bosse High School and North High School - and now serves as the Athletic Director at Harrison High School. Throughout his journey, his only goal has been to empower the next generation of young people to be the best version of themselves. Growing up in Evansville, Andre never had a high school head coach that looked like him. So it meant the world to him when he became the first black head coach at two different schools in two different sports! It wasn't about the wins and losses but about the kids knowing they had someone to look up to and trust. Andre celebrates them at every turn in their own journeys and helps guide them through all the bumps that adolescence and young adulthood brings. He wants to assist them with their pursuit of excellence in themselves and to instill a sense of community and family in area youth that cultivates a lifetime of support and fellowship.

TODD SCHIMMELL

A happily married father of four, Todd Schimmell has been with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office for 17 years, spending the last six as a School Resource Deputy and DARE Instructor in the west side county schools. In his non-professional life, Todd is a children's author/illustrator. After falling in love with restorative practices and social emotional learning in his time with the schools, he created a children's picture book series called Kids' Compass . The focus of this series is teaching social emotional lessons to kids at a young age, and doing so with fun rhyming stories and illustrations. Todd is all about the P-R-E: Positivity, Resiliency, and Empathy. There are eight books in this series so far, but Todd has taken a little break to start a new series called Let's Be Silly which is all about getting the laughs - so very important when doing presentations for kids. Todd is currently doing two different presentations - one where kids learn to be creative and one on bullying. Simply put, kids are Todd's absolute passion. Making them smile or mentoring them to their "Aha!" moment is, and will continue to be, his life's work.

NATALIE RASCHER CHADD HUFFMAN

Evansville native Natalie Rascher brings a unique and fresh perspective to all that she does in our community. Her passion for giving back can be seen by her commitment to serving in various roles within her hometown. Natalie remains active within the nonprofit, government, and parochial school sector as she is the first two-year term president for the Junior League of Evansville, serves on the Vanderburgh County Alcoholic Beverage Board, and coaches St. Ben’s 1st/2nd grade girls basketball.

In her professional life Natalie works as a Senior Advisor in Talent Acquisition for Top 10 National Accounting firm Clifton, Larson, Allen (CLA). Natalie also hopes to serve Evansville in a different way in the near future by running for elected office in 2023.

An Evansville native, Chadd Huffman began painting rental houses in high school which led to a passion for all things real estate. Out of school, Chadd continued in real estate and transitioned into a property manager role. In 2018, he founded Homes by Huffman with his wife Briana to serve as their management company for their real estate portfolio. Through the years the company has grown into a management company for investors with one unit to those with hundreds of units. The company remains focused on affordable housing and giving individuals and families a place to call home. Chadd helps investors buy and sell properties as a real estate broker with Keller Williams Capital Realty. He serves the community by being on the Board of Directors for Aurora, Executive Council for P.O.M.A. and Treasury for Newburgh Lodge #174. He currently resides in Newburgh, with his wife and their four children.

Matt Sturgeon is the Co-Founder and CEO of L&I Insurance Solutions in Newburgh, IN - experts in all lines of insurance (health, Medicare, home, auto, life and business). The agency serves thousands of clients in the tri-state area and the 15 states where the agency is licensed and federally certified. They provide personal and professional experience to each and every client. Outside of work, Matt is the Head Varsity Boys Soccer Coach at Evansville North High School. During his 14 years at the helm, North has won three Sectional Championships, two Evansville City Championships and one SIAC Championship. Fittingly, Matt was selected as the 2022 Evansville Metro Boy's High School Soccer Coach of the Year. In addition, for the last three years he's coached girls basketball at Castle North Middle School and the last two years Matt has also been on staff as a soccer coach for Indiana Fire South Academy. Outside of running a successful business and coaching multiple teams, Matt likes to be active in the community any chance he gets and enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife, Crystal, and their two daughters, Caringtyn, 13, and Kinsley, 9.

MAKENZIE HART

Makenzie Hart is the Talent Acquisition Partner at Apex Group Evansville. She represents the Evansville Regional Economic Partnership as a Community Ambassador and serves on the Steering Committee of the Young Professionals Alliance. She is in her fourth season as Emcee for the University of Evansville's women’s basketball team and as Public Address Announcer for the University of Southern Indiana's women’s volleyball and basketball teams. She has also emceed for the Evansville Otters and Evansville Thunderbolts in years past. While attending USI earning her Public Relations degree, Makenzie was an On-Air Radio Personality with HOT 96 for three and a half years. In her spare time, Makenzie leads WERQ Dance Fitness at BFit and represents Active Nutrition and Supplements as a Sponsored Athlete. She volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters and SMILE on Down Syndrome. Makenzie is overly passionate about networking, building relationships, connecting people, investing in our region, contributing to the community, and helping others. She’d like to thank her family, friends, colleagues, supporters, and role models for their unwavering encouragement and guidance. Makenzie feels deeply privileged to advocate for all of the incredible young talent and professionalism within the Evansville area.

JILLIAN BROTHERS

Jillian Brothers is a licensed therapist and certified school social worker. She graduated from the University of Southern Indiana at the top of her class with a Master of Social Work. Jillian currently serves as the School Social Worker for the MSD of Mt. Vernon working with junior high and high school students. In addition to serving the school system, Jillian is the At-Large City Councilwoman in Mt. Vernon where she oversees the legislative activities within her community. Jillian serves as a board member for a non-profit agency which supports women and children in domestic violence situations. She also spends time volunteering by leading a marriage outreach program and leading worship at her church, coaching the junior high cheerleading team, and coaching several youth soccer teams. Jillian was named 2021’s Phenomenal Woman Alumna of USI. Jillian’s favorite role is being a wife to Adam and the mother to their four children, Maliya, Maizee, Myles, and Mackenzi.

KATIE THORNBERRY

Katie Thornberry currently serves as the office manager at Paulson Insurance where she's been a valued employee since February 2014. She loves serving people through insurance by helping them understand what they need. Katie understands that home and auto insurance isn't something people enjoy dealing with so she tries to make the process easy and painless, whether it's talking about coverages or filing an insurance claim. Katie also serves on the board of directors of the Trotter House Pregnancy Resource Center. Their goal is to serve the community with excellence in meeting the needs of families and helping them thrive. Katie loves helping people and feels privileged to be able to make a difference through her position at Paulson and service to Trotter.

Ronald Hill has been a real estate agent for about 13 years, first as an agent under a team before going solo and forming The Hill Team LLC Keller Williams which stays among the Top 5 in sales of Keller Williams Capital Realty. Outside of his professional life, he makes it a point to give back to the community. Ronald donates school supplies annually to different charity groups and also donates turkeys each Thanksgiving to the homeless or those in need - and also to some of the clients at Raintree Consulting LLC. In addition, he volunteers time to cook at Ronald McDonald House, volunteers and supports RED DAY at any Keller Williams yearly, donates blood every chance he gets and supports Evansville Morning Rotary Club. Ronald is a very active parishioner at Good Shepherd Catholic Church. In addition, he and his Filipino physical therapist wife (and the whole family) are active members of Tri-state Fil-Am Association which in turn supports three charities yearly. Plus, he's been invited to be a motivational/ inspirational speaker for children and sponsors school sports and plays for the aspiring youth of this community. Ultimately, Ronald is very thankful for his real estate career because his success has allowed him the privilege to help the community in myriad ways

ALEXIS WHEELER

Alexis Wheeler graduated from the University of Evansville in 2021 where she earned her B.S. in Psychology. With the skills that Alexis gained, she now helps her mother’s business, Mimi’s Gourmet Pasta Sauce, as the social media coordinator. Alexis started her journey as a coordinator for her mother’s business in 2020. In June of 2022, Alexis began her journey as a realtor at Key Associates Signature Realty. She works closely with clients to build lasting relationships to give them the best home-buying experience. Aside from real estate, she is a freelancer for Estée Lauder and Tula Skincare. She likes to help her clients feel beautiful, confident and important. As a hobby that Alexis turned into a business, she takes photos that range anywhere from creative portraits to engagement photos to senior sessions. On top of her crazy busy life, she is also a server!

Kyle Gorman is the Executive Director of Advancement at the Evansville Rescue Mission. His department handles all fundraising, events, donor relations, public relations and marketing. Kyle worked part-time for the ERM from 2015 until January 2019 when he came on board full-time before graduating college. He then led his department, and helped to lead the organization, through the pandemic, assisting in decisions for the safety of the ERM staff. The ERM recently opened The Thrift Store and Mission Grounds at Washington Square Mall, a project in which Kyle led the negotiations of the lease and then assisted in the remodel and opening of the space. Recently, the ERM has started a Capital Campaign that Kyle has led and will continue to lead over the next three years. Outside of work, Kyle sits on the leadership team for Evansville Area Jeepers (EAJ) and is a board member of Pippero Pup Park at Friedman Park in Newburgh. EAJ is a Jeep club that hosts an annual Back The Blue event to raise money for Cops Connecting with Kids and also runs Operation Snowflake for the local hospitals in severe weather conditions.

JAYLIN CHINN

Jaylin Chinn is a 2018 graduate of Bosse High School. He graduated from IU Kokomo in May of this year. Jaylin played basketball for three years at the University of Indianapolis and one year at IU Kokomo. He received a bachelor's degree in Sports Management and a minor in Business. Jaylin's career goal is to become an athletic director and to one day own his own business. When he returned to Evansville he was approached with an opportunity to teach and coach in the community he grew up in. Though his basketball career had just ended and he was uncertain of his future, Jaylin knew that he wanted to share his love of basketball with others. After praying about it, he agreed to come on board at Glenwood Community School, serving as both a teacher and basketball coach. In addition, Jaylin coaches for the Bosse feeder program. He loves sharing stories with his students and watching them grow academically and athletically. Above all, Jaylin is proud to provide them a mentor to look up to.

KATIE BARNS

Katie Barnes is the owner of POSH International Hair Studio on North Green River Road in Evansville. POSH has 28 stylist chairs, but also offers nails, facials, and waxing. POSH is a busy salon, but a fun and always entertaining environment. Katie was a founder of POSH in 2008 and since then has become the sole owner as well as purchased a second location off Lincoln Avenue. She has always loved the hair industry, but more importantly, gets the unique opportunity of making her clients look and feel their best. From creating the perfect look for wedding parties, proms, pictures, and everything fun in between, no day is the same. Personally, Katie is married and has three children that are in multiple extracurricular activities. Between the salon and her kids' activities, she is a volunteer youth soccer coach, and has been a 17-year leader in the 4H youth program. Katie also stays very active and involved at her church and children's school, Resurrection Catholic Church and School, where she helps with multiple functions, fundraisers, and school activities.

Danniece Henderson is the Director of Operations and Chorus Manager for the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. Now in her fourth season with the organization, she is a dynamic young professional who works with local and national talent while producing multiple music events for the EPO. Her excellence backstage is enhanced by her volunteerism - she helps out monthly at Trinity United Methodist Church in their soup kitchen - and participation in community events including the Evansville Half Marathon. Let's face it, few people could run a race, go to rehearsal and then produce a performance all in the same day. As if that wasn't impressive enough, on occasion Danniece sings with the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus, gracing everyone with her beautiful soprano voice. The Evansville Philharmonic is extremely proud to have Danniece as a leader in the community and member of the EPO family.

ALLISON PHILLIPS

Allison Phillips graduated with a marketing degree from the University of Southern Indiana in 2011. In May 2017, she and her husband Brennan purchased Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt on Burkhardt Road in Evansville. They are proud to be a locally-owned business in the community - and especially proud to have finished out 2021 as the highest performing Orange Leaf franchisee. Allison and Brennan enjoy serving the tri-state, not just with awesome sweet treats, but with community activities such as fundraising give-backs, partnerships with ARC, Foster Friendly Evansville and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Allison also sits on the YMCA Board of Outreach where she works closely with the College and Career Readiness program. Owning her own business isn’t something she set out to do but the joys, challenges and opportunities keep her motivated and excited to serve the community. She couldn’t imagine doing anything else. In addition to running a business, Allison and Brennan are parents to two daughters, Catherine, 3, and Claire, three months. Together they enjoy eating lots of froyo, playing golf and spending time with family and friends.

Deleah Payne is a truly remarkable young woman who makes her mother proud every single day through her actions and determination to overcome challenges, including autism. It's amazing what Deleah has accomplished in her short time on this Earth and she's just getting started. Once she sets her mind to something, she makes it happen! Commendably, Deleah has taught our community about autism with an educational book and has shown that she can overcome sensory issues in the many speeches she has given locally. She has even created some amazing art that has been shared throughout Evansville. Perhaps most impressively, Deleah has become an amazing leader, instructing her peers on how it’s not nice to bully special needs kids and giving all teens with autism hope that they can not only get a diploma but get on the path to college. At just 15 years old, Deleah has already shown that she is, and will continue to be, a tremendous asset to our community.

DELEAH PAYNE EDWARD & BRANDI CASWELL

Edward and Brandi Caswell, owners of Full Throttle Automotive, started the business just over eight years ago after a side gig in their garage became more than their home could handle. Leaving Edward’s teaching career behind with minimal funding, three kids in tow and a dream, Full Throttle Automotive was born. Having little business background, they were able to manage their business and employees without ever going into debt. They found that honesty, transparency, and passion quickly allowed them to become one of the tri-state’s most reputable auto repair shops. The success of Full Throttle has allowed them to give back to their community. With the help of their amazing crew, aka “family,” and the support of their customers, Full Throttle has helped fund many high school sports, organizations, and families as well as hosted a benefit car show each year to raise funds for local charities. Through it all, Edward and Brandi remain humble and give all the glory to God for His blessings.

HOPE FUSSNER SARA BAYLOR

Hope Fussner is the Project Manager at Reckitt/Mead Johnson and a CoLead for Women@Reckitt which helps women succeed further at Reckitt. The company also partners with local elementary schools to teach girls about STEM subjects. At work, Hope also organizes volunteer days for her team at places like Ronald McDonald House to make sure they are impacting the community. Hope loves designing menus and cooking for the families staying there. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Ark Children's Crisis Center and is a member of the Junior League of Evansville, serving on the committee to support the new Mobile Neighborhood Food Market. At home, for every holiday, Hope opens up her house to anyone who needs a place to be, generously doing all of the cooking. Hope believes in celebrating local, and you can catch her out at local restaurants whenever she has free time. She loves the people in our community and wants to continue to help in any way possible.

In 2016, Sara Baylor had a vision to become a business owner that made a difference in the lives of area children and athletes. She had been involved in cheer programs since she could walk and dreamed of opening her own gym. With an infectious can-do attitude, Sara did just that, creating Legacy Elite Cheer and Tumbling with one goal in mind: to create a safe place for athletes and families to call their second home, regardless of their background, beliefs or where they came from. Proudly, Sara has ensured that Legacy Elite is a place where athletes can grow and excel in the world of all-star cheer and tumbling. One of the most important aspects she has been instilling in her athletes is to get involved within the community and to give back, from donating food items to local food banks during the holidays and raising money for local children battling cancer to adopting families for Christmas and helping with the Highland Challenger League. Ultimately, she inspires her athletes to think beyond the gym and become leaders in the community.

THE WINE VAULT

About seven or eight years ago, Holly Edmond and her husband Scott decided it would make good financial sense to start investing in property. After all, the couple routinely dealt with money in their day jobs - particularly Scott, who, after two decades in commercial lending made the transition to commercial brokerage, a field that is very cyclical by nature. Which meant that the Edmonds needed a fall-back of sorts, a just-in-case plan B. "So to smooth out the ebbs and flows we started investing in property - hoping that it's passive income," Holly notes. "We like to buy one to two things a year; we have two storage facilities, a trailer park, several apartment complexes." And now they can add an adult beverage business to that impressive list.

Cut to August of this year and the Edmonds had yet to purchase any property, nor was there much on the horizon. But unexpectedly, two possibilities suddenly materialized - one of them being the Wine Vault, a popular destination for area wine

lovers who appreciate great selection and service. "We thought it might be a really cool venture and decided it was a decent investment," Holly explains. "It's kind of been a rollercoaster, a lot of learning, but it's been really fun." The Edmonds took the business over on October 1 - and quickly discovered just how lucky they were to inherit such a loyal, knowledgeable staff with years of experience. "The employees here are phenomenal - they all stayed on and I love them all," Holly gushes. "They've truly helped to guide me along."

And the help has been greatly appreciated, because even with an accounting degree and an MBA, Holly has found that learning to run a business is "very intense" - not to mention she had to get up to speed on all things wine-related. "I'm learning that there's millions of different kinds of grapes, not just green and red - and if you grow one in a region versus another it's going to taste totally different," she says. "The science behind it all is very interesting." Now two months into the gig, Holly is loving the process of running the Wine Vault and is ready to kick up the marketing

to put the store more front and center. To that end, she's eager to promote several popular offers for the holidays and beyond, including gift baskets which can be made for any occasion or price point, with any mixand-match of food, accessories, wine or beer (the store also carries a great selection of local/regional craft brews). In addition, WV's popular wine club is expanding this month to include a double white option. And starting in January, monthly wine dinners will return.

This is a brand new place that opened recently, and I haven’t had many Korean dishes before so of course it piqued my interest. Since the remodel, this spot is extremely bright and clean on the inside. Before it seemed like a more intimate restaurant with the booths, but I do like the new, more streamlined casual dining. I will say I wish I knew more about Korean cuisine but luckily there are employees to help people such as myself, so I made sure to ask plenty of questions, especially since I wanted to venture out and explore something I'd never tried before or even heard of, for that matter.

For my entree, I decided to go with the Jaeyuksaute. All I knew about it was that it was marinated beef and came with Kimchi and a side. I must admit I've only had Kimchi one other time in my life, and it was in a dining hall while I was deployed in Iraq; it was dull to say the least but I was game to try again. I also ordered a side of bean sprouts because I wanted a tiny snap vegetable on my plate to pair with my beef. I was also pleasantly surprised that the meal didn’t take too long to be made - and although the cafeteria tray plating was a bit odd, it didn’t take away from the tastes!

I have to say, this marinated beef was the

most tender beef I’ve ever tried - it's the God’s honest truth! This meat was so tender I could have cut through it with my finger.

The marinate was also just an amazing blend of spices and came out on a hot skillet. I was instantly a fan of this beef especially when grouped with the rice, such a delectable combination. I can say this Kimchi was infinitely better than what I had in the past, and while I'm not a huge fan of Kimchi overall, I can see why people enjoy it so much - particularly when paired with rice and bean sprouts. As for the bean sprouts, I haven’t had them like this before because they made them with a lemon taste. I quite enjoyed the flavor, and it went well with everything on the tray. I would tell anyone that likes bean sprouts to try them here because that lemon flavor adds a beautiful pop to the dish. All in all, I was happy with my meal and will be returning soon enough to try some other dishes I’ve never experienced. Go support this new local hot spot and try something new!

I love all the vibrant colors that Christmas brings - but I do not love all the artificial food colorings that are added during this time. Did you know they make dye-free sprinkles? PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE CRUNCH BARS (MAKES 12 BARS)

INGREDIENTS:

• 3 C. RICE CHEX CEREAL (IT IS DIFFICULT TO FIND AN ORGANIC VERSION OF THIS CEREAL)

• 1 ½ C. ANY CHOCOLATE CHIPS

• 1 C. ORGANIC PEANUT BUTTER (JUST PEANUTS & SALT)

• ¼ C. REFINED COCONUT OIL

• OPTIONAL: DYE-FREE SPRINKLES (SUPERNATURAL IS A GREAT BRAND)

DIRECTIONS:

1. LINE AN 8X8 PAN WITH PARCHMENT PAPER AND SET ASIDE.

2. ADD THE CEREAL TO A LARGE MIXING BOWL AND SET ASIDE.

3. IN A MEDIUM SIZE SAUCE PAN COMBINE CHOCOLATE CHIPS, PEANUT BUTTER, AND COCONUT OIL. HEAT UP MIXTURE UNTIL IT HAS MELTED. WHISK TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS COMBINED.

4. POUR MIXTURE OVER THE CEREAL IN THE MIXING BOWL. GENTLY STIR TO COAT THE CEREAL.

5. POUR THE MIXTURE INTO THE 8X8 PAN. DECORATE THE TOP WITH SPRINKLES.

Former DRK WTR frontwoman charting singer-songwriter course on forthcoming solo EP

"Truthfully, I really wanted to return to my roots," local singer Lauri Andrick explains when discussing why she made the decision to exit DRK WTR, one of Evansville's most promising new bands. "It was really fun, but I felt like I was compromising how I would traditionally write my own music."

During the year she spent with the popular 90's-influenced act, Andrick proved to be a force of nature on stage, belting out her big vocals with abandon. But her more authentic, quieter side was being increasingly suppressed; it felt disingenuous to continue pushing forward with DRK WTR, especially as plans were being made to take things to the next level after the release of the band's debut EP. So Andrick amicably parted ways and started plotting a solo recording that would reflect the singersongwriter inside her - songs in the vein of Elliott Smith, Laura Marling and Phoebe Bridgers.

Andrick's first order of business was to contact Steve Tyner at Black Cat Recording who previously worked with DRK WTR; he readily agreed to help the newly-unfettered singer realize her true musical passion. In fact, Tyner noted that he wanted to

take on more of a producer role this time around. "We've been talking about the EP - about how to put it together, the vibe, the atmosphere," Andrick says. "We're going for a more experimental vibe - and Steve will help me write some of the atmospheric parts." The plan is to record four or five tracks, including "Skinned Knees," a dark acoustic number that addresses familial trauma. Interestingly, though Andrick is left-handed, she learned to play guitar in reverse, becoming quite adept at fingerpicking with her right hand yet struggling with basic strumming. As a result, her songwriting is built around the plucking of strings, often making use of alternate tuning. Despite her revealed influences she's truly got a style all her own.

But what local music lovers will surely most look forward to on the forthcoming EP is her vocals - stripped to the bone with the proposed atmospheric production, allowing the singer's incredible tone to shine. She growled with the best of them on stage with DRK WTR, but this solo venture will present a softer side that should

open Andrick up to a whole new fanbase. Though she needs to come up with a name for the project first - and fast. Andrick isn't convinced her given name will resonate so she's considering a host of possibilities to christen her solo act, including a past nickname. Stay tuned and also look out for Andrick's inclusion on a local band's upcoming EP.

When we last caught up with The Strangers a few months back, the four members - Lucas Washington, Rylan Cox, Kadin Rea and Teelin Atteberry - had just experienced an incredible thrill, earning a spot on the main stage at the iconic Louder Than Life music festival in Louisville and playing alongside the likes of Alice In Chains, Incubus and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The coveted performance was the prize for the band's victory in the Battle for the Big Stage competition

as The Strangers triumphed over professional acts from around the country, all vying for a potentially career-making opportunity. Safe to say the guys slotted right in with Louder Than Life's rocking vibe, wowing festival goers with their fusing of pop melodies and bluesy heft, balanced out with a raw, grungy attack.

Off the road for the time being, The Strangers are hardly slowing down, having just released a visceral live EP, Natural Forces , recorded over the summer at Evansville's annual Fuchsia Fest. The 4-track offering features three songs from the band's acclaimed self-titled debut - the Beatlesesque "Sweet Holly," Led Zeppelininspired "Dead and Dazed" and an epic 10-minute version of "Electric Love"along with "The Way I See It," a brand new composition with a serious groove and some scintillating guitar work that moves

between Middle Eastern riffing and bluesy jamming. Recorded by Wesley Luttrell of Wally Opus Records, the electrifying live set is the first Strangers release with Atteberry on drums.

Southern Indiana-based musician drops inventive new single, readies full-length album of experimental folk

Every once in awhile, an artist comes along whose music almost defies description - something that's increasingly rare these days. But Sam Kuban, a southern Indiana-based artist with a wildly creative mind, has dealt with potential tragedy in his life by constructing an album of experimental folk that draws from numerous disparate influences, arriving at a unique destination you'll feel compelled to visit again and again.

Lead single "Dig a Hole," released via Wally Opus Records last month, announced a major new area talent in Swamp Eyes, setting the template for Kuban's upcoming full-length, Something's in the Hall. In short, expect the unexpected. Each song covers more musical territory in three minutes than seems possible, drawing from the folk genre while mixing in elements of emo, indie rock, punk and Danny Elfman soundtracks - even tinges of metal at times - that play off inventive vocal layering/harmonies and periodically spastic drums with a mind of their own. It all makes for an incredibly thrilling and totally original listening experience

Kuban's creative outburst, while exhilarating, was prompted by an "unforeseen diagnosis" of Type 1 Diabetes given to his first-born child at just 17 months old. He approached this project from a parental perspective, facing his fears and working out his pain through music.

Tri-state rockers return with emotional "Running," explore new lyrical territory

The mark of a great band is the ability to branch out yet not lose the essence of what makes it tick. Atlas of the Dogs, led by powerhouse vocalist Jaxon Fleming, have taken that challenge by the horns, producing an emotional new single that broadens their sound without sacrificing the rock. The inspirational "Running" - released November 25 - explores new lyrical territory, in particular, telling the "story of a young girl struggling with her sexuality and being shunned by her family because of it." The intense subject matter is navigated beautifully by Fleming; he expresses the confusion and desperation of such a trying situation with dynamic phrasing at every turn: "I'm running, I'm running but I can't escape/ I'm tired, you're tired/ It's all the same."

Musically, "Running" sees the band creating a melodically dark, almost ethereal vibe during the verses before ramping things up for the cathartic chorus with a wall of distortion that amplifies the hurt apparent in Fleming's voice. The song absolutely soars during the final 30 seconds as angelic vocals hover above the fray and the tension builds to a stirring climax. As with the Dogs' previous single, the Chevelle-influenced "Miss Cocaine," this track is 100% radio-ready, recorded with power and precision by Wesley Luttrell at Wally Opus Records. Associate professors at Owensboro Community College and Pellissippi State Community College, respectively, Alschbach and Lewis host the popular podcast The Rock & Metal Profs: The History & Philosophy of Rock & Metal. Now they're bringing their keen insights to the pages of News 4U with a monthly deep dive into some of the best bands of the rock/metal genre and thoughts on music in general.

THE INCLUSIVITY OF THE ROCK AND METAL COMMUNITY

On our last podcast, I asked Court to define the “Rock and Roll identity.” This was not a scripted question, I just sprung it on him to see how he would react (he works well under pressure). As usual, his response was apt and thoughtful. Court suggested that the heart of rock and roll is a performer’s willingness to be rebellious, embrace their own unique identities, make a connection with audiences, fans, and their instrument, and to embrace life and have fun. When all of these aspects come together in the right ways, rock and metal artists often create something unique and special that can be life-changing for listeners.

Court’s answer got me thinking about what it means to be “rock and roll” or “metal.” But is there a rock and metal code by which the faithful conduct their behavior? Just a few days ago, Judas Priest was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (LONG OVERDUE, by the way). During his acceptance speech, Priest vocalist Rob Halford talked about the inclusivity of the metal community

and how the genre offers a place of belonging for outsiders and misfits. The Metal God hit the nail on the head!

The rock and metal community has always offered a home for the wayward, the outcast, the downtrodden and the lonely. I’ll never forget riding home after school with a hearingimpaired student that my buddy Dave and I befriended. We couldn’t understand him, but he could read our lips. It was a little awkward, but Dave and I felt that we were doing a good deed by giving the chap a ride. During our journey, I put on Metallica, and this young man put his hands on the dashboard to feel the vibrations of the music and began to head-bang! Dave and I were so shocked that this deaf kid loved metal! It was a magical moment realizing that this fellow wasn’t any different from us, despite his

disability.

When we are at our best, the rock and metal code embodies mutual respect, acceptance for individual differences, embracing all who love the genre, proselytizing for new converts by singing the praises of our favorite artists, and focusing on commonalities rather than what divides us. This is the ideal to which all rock and metal lovers should aspire.

THE DELPHI MURDERS: AN ARREST

Even people that don't follow true crime tend to be familiar with the Delphi Murders - and not just because of the Indiana connection. This bizarre case from 2017, which sadly involved the deaths of two teenage girls, 13-year-old Abigail Williams and 14-year-old Liberty German, is an extremely rare example of a crime committed in which the victims captured the suspect on video just prior to the assault. In fact, these two brave young women also managed to record the voice of their attacker, ultimately leaving behind vital clues on a cell phone.

To recap the events of February 13, 2017, "Abby" and "Libby" were spending a Monday afternoon hiking on the Monon High Bridge in Delphi, Indiana. Unexpectedly, the two were approached by a man shuffling towards them with his head down and hands in pockets. This individual was later heard to give what appeared to be a command - "Down the hill" - captured on German's phone which also recorded the aforementioned images of the suspect. Worryingly for the girls' parents, Abby and Libby failed to return from the hike at the appointed time and after an initial informal search for their whereabouts, the Indiana State Police got involved. At noon the following day, the bodies of the girls were discovered roughly a half mile from the bridge. Both Abby and Libby had been murdered though the nature of their deaths has never been publicly revealed.

Incredibly, even with video of the suspect and a sample of his voice, the killer went undetected for five years - a fact made even more remarkable by Delphi's small population of just under 3000 residents. Someone surely recognized the

individual; after all, it was assumed that he knew the area and maybe even lived nearby. Yet no viable leads surfaced - though many following the case felt that detectives were withholding information, or simply waiting for the right moment to bring the hammer down. Finally, on October 26, 2022, they did just that, taking 50-year-old Richard M. Allen into custody and charging him with the murders of Abby and Libby two days later.

Allen - who is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, of course - has been a longtime member of the Delphi community, living just two miles from the Monon High Bridge. His proximity to the site of the murders only raises more questions as to how he avoided suspicion for so long. It's amazing to think that his wife, in particular, failed to connect the dots based on the audio and video footage that was played ad nauseam on local and national news. Or what about family and friends? Or co-workers? The idea that no one in such a close-knit town recognized the individual on that bridge as Allen is kind of mind-boggling. Hopefully, we'll learn more about the suspect and the evidence compiled by the ISP in the coming days.

Family of missing Evansville woman trying to keep hope alive during busy holiday season

At a time when most people are busy celebrating the joy of the holiday season with loved ones, the family of Dawnita Wilkerson is left feeling frustrated by the lack of progress in the search for the 46-year-old mother of six. Last seen at a local motel on June 21, 2020 as she stepped into a silver/pewter-colored 2004 SUV, Wilkerson disappeared without a trace and has now been missing for two and a half years. Her children continue to struggle with the loss of their mother (son Kylar sadly passed away last February) and are desperate for answers - but none seem to be forthcoming.

Still, Wilkerson's family refuses to give up; they're doing their best to keep hope alive despite the apparent lack of cooperation from detectives. It may ultimately be up to the public to solve this caseWilkerson's loved ones remain convinced that someone out there has crucial information that could lead to her whereabouts. VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

Evansville's Josh Armstrong has a very selfless perspective when it comes to adopting pets. "My job is to serve the animal, not for the animal to be a plaything or diversion for me," he explains.

And Armstrong certainly speaks from experience, having adopted no less than eight senior cats over the years, including Nora, a grey, domestic short-hair that he brought home from the VHS in May of 2021. 10 years old at the time, Nora (or "Snora" as Armstrong lovingly refers to her for obvious reasons), had lived with her previous owners since birth, basically, but as often happens, the eventual

introduction of a newborn into the home made it difficult for the family to maintain Nora's proper care. Thankfully, VHS Executive Director Kendall Paul knew just who to call when she was returned to the shelter after a decade out in the real world.

"When I first saw her in the cage, I knew I had to adopt her," Armstrong recalls of his initial meeting with Nora. "She was pretty shy but with an older cat that's to be expected. I brought her home the next day and then spent a few days just being quiet and letting her understand what was going on

at her speed. We worked on some behavior issues that older cats often have - now she's just a great friend." Indeed, the two quickly developed a tight bond that's only gotten stronger over time; in fact, Nora has brought so much joy into Armstrong's life that he felt compelled to email Paul with a very heartfelt message, thanking her for all the great work the shelter does. "It made me realize that the VHS is really a human services organization - bringing these loving animals into people's homes is amazing and truly improves your quality of life," he says.

Like most senior cats, Nora understandably sleeps a lot - and snores a bunch, of course - but reportedly spends much of her awake time staring out the windows of Armstrong's home and keeping tabs on the neighborhood. Armstrong surmises that she didn't have the opportunity to observe the outdoors in her previous life and is making up for lost time. "She's a great girl - so sweet and lovingand I hope to give her a wonderful final stage of her life."

So, that was fairly unexpected. No, I'm not referring to the recent tristate cold snap/snowfall that put the kibosh on the run of warm, sunny weather we'd been enjoying but rather the poor showing of the Republicans in the midterm elections; all signs pointed to a bloodbath, after all. The left looked to be in serious trouble, with most experts predicting a red wave - or a red tsunami, according to Sen. Ted Cruz - that would decimate the Democrats' political stranglehold in both the House and Senate. But surprisingly, this significant shift in power never materialized on election night. In fact, as I type this, the Dems have reportedly held onto control of the Senate and seem poised to maintain a decent amount of seats in the House, despite fears that they would get shellacked. Sure, Republican Kevin McCarthy will likely replace Nancy Pelosi as the new Speaker of the House, but he won't have quite the level of support from his fellow party members that he hoped to enjoy. So what happened? Why, at a time when President Biden is saddled with a sagging approval rating, inflation is through the roof and gas prices

remain above $4/gallon throughout much of the country, did the Republicans fail so miserably? Well, to be fair, they still managed to secure some key victories but overall, their performance left much to be desired, especially considering the aforementioned circumstances. How on earth did they miss the bunny layup? Or the gimme putt, if golf is your jam.

Seems to me that much like the extreme "woke" faction of the Democratic party has turned off middle of the road voters over the last few years, the Republicans' noisy election deniers - supported unconditionally by Trump, of courseultimately couldn't connect with everyday folks out there. Frankly, most people were sick and tired of hearing about supposed fraud with zero evidence of anything truly nefarious occurring. For instance, Kari Lake, candidate for governor in Arizona, continues to insist she has proof of illegal voting but much like that wackadoodle pillow guy, Mike Lindell, she's yet to produce a shred of it. In addition, with the

majority of Americans identifying as pro-choice to some degree, abortion rights certainly played a role in the Dems' impressive showing. Clearly, the Republican party needs to go back to the drawing board, maybe do one of those Subway refreshes. No doubt it's going to be interesting to see if the right can recover and where the party is heading - especially with Trump currently taking a beating post-elections and Florida governor Ron DeSantis on the rise. DJT never goes down without a fight, as we all know, and he's certainly not above torching DeSantis to stay, however precariously, at the top of the Republican heap. Prepare for battle.

IN FACT, AS I TYPE THIS, THE DEMS HAVE REPORTEDLY HELD ONTO CONTROL OF THE SENATE AND SEEM POISED TO MAINTAIN A DECENT AMOUNT OF SEATS IN THE HOUSE, DESPITE FEARS THAT THEY WOULD GET SHELLACKED.

Mercifully, the midterm elections are now over and the barrage of political ads and endless discussion panels of pundits have dissipated to a degree. And while I briefly considered putting my two cents in about the outcomes of said elections, I figured good ol' Barold would address all that with his column this month. Also, I'm old and very tired and talking about politics is exhausting. Furthermore, I've got bigger fish to fry at the moment. Because there's a particularly obnoxious TV commercial currently running ad nauseam that really gets my goat. Seriously, I can't escape it - every time I turn the channel (as noted in previous columns, in keeping with my dinosaur status I still have cable) I come face-to-face with the horror of a kid blowing a snot bubble. You read that right. To be honest, I don't even know what product is being promoted - I've never stuck around long enough to find out. All I can tell you is that there's a child who's apparently suffering from an illness or something and he's standing in his pajamas blowing a freaking snot bubble. Yes, you read that right again. Now, I must ask: Why do I need to see this? Was it really necessary to include such a gross image? I mean, I'm fully aware that young folks often do unsavory things like this but generally they have the decency to do it at home and not in my living room. Oh, bubble boy.

While I'm on a roll, there's one more commercial I'd like to rail on... Again, I can't tell you the exact details of it as I'm

generally too traumatized after viewing, but here's the gist: There's a bunch of online college students of various ages and backgrounds who have just completed their degree at the University of Phoenix or some other internet-based school and they've received the official graduation document in the mail. Cue uncontrollable tears, over-the-top hugging of family members and partners and hyperbolic declarations of what this achievement means to them. Admittedly, I'm a cynical bastard, but I just want to scream at the TV, "You're not even going to be able to do anything with that degree!" Mostly because all of these people

are actors, but also because college is totally overrated these days. Then again what do I know. At least none of these highly emotional students are blowing snot bubbles - a small consolation. Of course, I could just stop watching TV and avoid commercials altogether. But in addition to being overly cynical, I'm also incredibly stubborn and simply refuse to cut the cord for fear of missing re-runs of Seinfeld episodes that I've seen virtually hundreds of times. I find the whole familiarity thing soothing, if you must know. By the way, to bring everything full circle, "The Bubble Boy" episode from season four is gold, baby.

TAYLOR SWIFT Midnights Republic Records

Midnights is not a collection of songs you fall asleep to; it's one you dream about.

Taylor Swift’s 10th studio album is full of hazy, beautiful tones that nourish the hungriest of Swifty souls. On the heels of her 2020 albums Folklore and Evermore, Swift continues to prove she is in it for the long haul. “Bejeweled” is truly magical with a fantastical music video to boot. Laura Dern makes a splash as the wicked stepmother while HAIM plays the wicked stepsisters to Swift’s Cinderella. “Best believe I’m still bejeweled/ When I walk in the room I can still make the whole place shimmer.” You tell them, your highness. “Lavender Haze” is sexy, cool and sweet. The Mad Men-inspired song pulsates with the electricity of falling for someone to the backbone of a techno beat - it's irresistible. “Snow on the Beach” with Lana Del Ray is transportive, ethereal and otherworldly. Their angelic voices blend so beautifully with such raw emotion. But with every rose, there is a thorn. Like many artists this year, Swift has had to alter her music after releasing it. In this case, she removed the word “FAT” on the scale in her “Anti-Hero" music video after fans voiced concerns over use of the term. Regardless, her music remains incredibly touching and relatable.- Marisa Patwa

CHARLIE PUTH Charlie Atlantic Records

This third studio album is the most personal to date for silky crooner Charlie Puth. The popular singer took a backseat during the pandemic to incubate his perfect collection of songs. The gestation was well worth the wait - these tracks are superbly crafted with artistry and true reflection. Puth is maturing and we stan growth. “Light Switch” became a viral sensation of its own thanks to countless TikTok videos. Although this 80s, high-energy pop beat doesn't make me jive on the disco floor, it's definitely a catchy and cute way to get the ear giggles. Elsewhere, Puth hits the high notes in “Tears on my Piano” and “Left and Right” is a radio hit, featuring BTS’s Jung Hook. It’s sugary sweet and their voices blend like candy - totally addictive. “That’s Hilarious” is the true standout, though. Through the undercurrents of autotune, we can hear the true passion in, and gorgeous tone of, Puth's voice. He sings with gut-wrenching raw emotion - you can almost feel the daggers he’s trying to remove from her heart after a bad break up. Charlie, your fans have tissues for your tears and support for your career. - Marisa Patwa

MEGHAN TRAINOR Takin’ It Back Epic Records

The pop star's fifth studio album is bursting with love. “Made You Look” dives back into her “All About that Bass” and “Dear Future Husband” 1950s pop with a modern twist vibe. It’s filled with cheerful, peppy beats and Trainor’s signature lyrical sass: “I could have my Gucci on/ I could wear my Louis Vuitton/ But even with nothin' on/ Bet I made you look (I made you look)." Yes, honey. These retro vibes are giving. She is so upbeat, but she can dive deep into the pain of life, too. “Bad for Me (feat. Teddy Swims)" is a soulful song about the heartache of breaking up with your family. Trainor takes us to church, the snaps making you want to groove and pray at the same time: “Please don't make promises that you can't keep/ Your best intentions end up hurting me/ No matter what, I'll love you endlessly/ I know we're blood, but this love is bad for me.” Praise be. “Drama Queen” is simple yet fun, centered around being queen bee and spoiled with “Your Lips are Moving” vibes. “Superwoman” is one of her first takes singing about motherhood. It’s incredibly inspiring and normalizes us having flaws even as we try to be our best. This album is Meghan at her best. - Marisa Patwa

CHEZ KANE Powerzone Frontiers Music SRL

British vocalist Chez Kane’s sophomore effort Powerzone is equal parts 80s-era glitz and glam, excess and bombast - topped off with a voice that rivals Heart's Ann Wilson back in her heyday. But what is so enjoyable and refreshing about this record is that Kane has embraced the camp and over-the-top antics that dominated MTV in the late-80s with bands like Warrant and Poison. Just check out her video for “Love Gone Wild” and you’ll be transported back to the glory days of MTV. The album features titles like “(The Things we do) When We’re Young in Love,” “I Just Want You” and “Rock you Up.” Admittedly, we’re not listening to the artistry of Dylan or the prose of Neil Peart. Having said that, the songs on Powerzone are catchy, with some nice hooks and sing-along choruses. Kane may have been born in the wrong decade, but she’s a delightful throwback to an era when performing was as much about talent as it was attitude, swagger and unapologetic fun.

Rocket to Wrigley/Two Balls No Strikes Semi-Pro Records

Chicago punks The Ueckers have reissued their two albums Rocket to Wrigley and Two Balls No Strikes on Semi-Pro Records as one 36-song double album. The compilation collects the two baseball-themed concept albums onto one giant cassette of ramshackle, DIY punk songs made by brothers J. Uecker and B. Uecker. The Ueckers have a fast and carefree style that recalls the typical Ramones-esque punk formula, but the nonstop baseball subject matter mixed with the lo-fi, free-spirited nature of these songs make this collection a lot of fun. If you’re a fan of baseball and punk rock, this incredibly specific niche album is the perfect fit for you. For everyone else, The Ueckers' baseball punk might just be fun novelty, but their passion for two of America’s greatest pastimes is indisputable.- Russ Finn

CLEMENTINE WAS RIGHT Can't Get Right With the Darkness The Blue Turn

If Arcade Fire played country music (and were far less pretentious) they might sound something like Clementine Was Right. The Denver-based country rock band, led by poet and songwriter Mike Young, released their wonderful debut album Lightning & Regret in January 2020 - right before the collective darkness the world experienced in 2020. This year, Clementine Was Right bring us their sophomore effort, an album that confronts pessimism and inspires hope. The songs found on Can’t Get Right are cozy and comforting - warm like a blanket and a bonfire. Young’s lyrics tell beautiful stories of drifters and lovers and people drifting in and out of love, all backed by the twangy sounds and joyous singalongs of his bandmates. This excellent follow-up is a welcome addition to CWR’s catalogue and has me eager for a third LP.- Russ Finn

JOJI Smithereens 88rising/Warner Records

Smithereens is the shortest installment in Joji's projects since 2017's In Tongues, yet it's not short of acclaim in the slightest. Nine tracks, divided into two parts, make up this album. The lyrical content of Smithereens reads as a universally melancholic and nostalgic break-up album. With songs like "Glimpse of Us" and "Die for You" it's easy to see the emotional growth in Joji's songwriting, as well as the continued excellence in his production. My main qualms with this release is that the bulk of it is overshadowed by the singles and the second part of this album doesn't carry the same delivery and care for production as the first part. For those who missed the bedroom style beats of his earlier works, you'll be happy to hear the tracks from the latter half of Smithereens - Hamilton Golike

ARCTIC MONKEYS The Car Domino Recording Company

The seventh entry into the discography of Sheffield natives Arctic Monkeys symbolizes the death of their once lively rock outfit of former years. Following the divisive nature of Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino, vocalist Alex Turner goes full lounge bar act, mining a range of 70's-themed inspirations. Songs such as "There'd Better Be A Mirrorball" and the title track feel as if they've been lifted from a spaghetti western Bond film directed by Jean-Luc Godard, mostly due to the inclusion of orchestral strings and big band elements. While the album's not entirely bad - on tracks like "Body Paint" and "Big Ideas" we hear a symbiotic coalescence of these themes - it feels as though these facets only act as a bandage for the lackluster melodies and lazy vocals from Turner (though there are many high notes sprinkled throughout, almost none of them are sung by Turner himself). The phonetic surrealistic lyricism of Turner's turns up to ten over the slow tempo instrumentation of the band, while his vocal delivery tends to simmer mildly, at best, for the rest of The Car. Ultimately, I feel underwhelmed and let down by what could have been the perfect departure into a new era of Arctic Monkeys.- Hamilton Golike

The album opens with "Who’s Been Trying," a song that seems tailor-made for dancing down the street in New Orleans. Jimmy Carpenter's saxophone in the middle of the song is top notch. "No Light Blues" offers stellar drumming from Justin Truitt and funky bass from Mike Seifrit. Al Ek’s guitar playing on "Truth Come Home" sounds eerily reminiscent of Carlos Santana. "Waymore Blues," a cover of a Waylon Jennings song, is a bluesy toe-tapper with a guest appearance from Rob Edwards on bass and great piano from Billy Truitt. He sings with passion about his unrequited love in "True."

"Salvation or Hell and Famous Potatoes" features Ek performing harmonica with amazing skill to complement Billy Truitt’s keyboard prowess at the end of the song. A Latin beat permeates "Life Like Art" and will cause your whole body to dance as Justin Truitt offers a steady drum beat and Steve Eaton stops by for a guest appearance on vocals. Ek gives the listener more phenomenal harmonica to accompany his turn at vocals on "Hobo Flatts." "Preacher Stole My Angel" features a train beat as Billy Truitt sings about losing his woman. The album closes with "Ragtime Eastern Cowboy "22"," a jazzy instrumental number perfect for sipping your favorite beverage. - Paul Bragin

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.75

This regionally-brewed cream ale pours a clear yellow with a thin head. It has a smooth body with a malty profile on the palate. It finishes very smooth, with very little bitterness, making it a very easy drinking beer, perfect for the holidays. A nice job up north by the Bloomington Brewing Company.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.5

A thick white head crowns this beer and takes time to evaporate. A slight malt presence hits the nose. Likewise, the malt flavors remain with the initial tasting of the beer due to the flaked maize used during the brewing process, with little hop presence detected. This lighter beer seems like a good one to always have available, since it will please most drinkers. Pair it with salad, mild shellfish, Monterrey Jack cheese or lemon custard tart.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

I always enjoy Hoosier breweries but was reluctant to review a cream ale. Every time I'm offered one it takes me back to my youth and Little Kings. I like that this Bloomington brew comes in a 16 oz can and doesn't taste like Little Kings. It pours a slightly cloudy amber color. It's very smooth and crisp with light fruit flavors - and a lot better than what I was expecting.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4

Wango Tango is an IPA that pours a cloudy straw color and has a nice cream-colored head. It is mediumbodied, with citrus on the nose. It is slightly malty on the palate and has a smooth mouthfeel. Grapefruit and orange dominate and it finishes slightly bitter. Overall, this is a good offering from our local Terre Haute Brewing Company.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A decent white head tops this hazy IPA and evaporates slowly. A significant amount of grapefruit notes dominates the scent profile. Likewise, more grapefruit flavors come forward when drinking the beer, which boasts a very heavy body and mouthfeel. People who enjoy heavier hop-forward beers need to drink this. Pair it with a wide variety of foods like Buffalo wings, burgers, beef stew, turkey or desserts like carrot cake and fruit pies.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is an extremely cloudy beer - almost thick looking. I'd be interested to put a spoon in it to see if it would stand up. It pours a dark amber and almost a light brown color - I simply can't see through it. It has an ABV of 7.5% and it's from Terre Haute - a total win-win. I'm surprised by the sweet hops flavor - was expecting it to be extremely bitter, but it's not at all. It has a nice citrus flavor but it's not your average IPA - it's so much better.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4

Quite Brite is a Belgian Wheat Ale. It pours a clear yellow with a lasting thick white head. Notes of orange citrus on the nose as is typical of the style, with clove and citrus rounding out the flavor profile on the palate. Light to medium body with plenty of carbonation to give it a light, refreshing finish.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick white head rests on this beer when poured into a wheat beer glass. A good dose of wheat scent fills the nose. A burst of carbonation hits the tongue first, followed by wheat flavors and some notes of banana in the long finish. This refreshing beer should remain a staple, especially in the summer. Pair it with savory seafood like sushi or scallops, or a lighter dish like a salad with an oil-based dressing.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

This is a cloudy, straw-colored beer. It has a wheat-y malt flavor with the light sour flavor of the Belgian yeast. I can detect a hint of spices, some cloves, coriander and a bit of banana but none of it is overpowering. They make a winter Bell's that is somewhat similar and I can't wait for it to come out, but this one will give it a run for its money.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5

This IPA pours a clear amber with a nice lasting head. Notes of citrus and pine dominate the nose. On the palate it is somewhat malty, with the pine flavors dominating. It has light to medium carbonation and finishes with a distinct hop bitterness.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick white head forms on this IPA and never totally evaporates. A decent amount of citrus controls the nose with some pine also present. The beer seems mild at first, but hop flavors continue to develop in the long finish. IPA

lovers need to try this. Pair it with heavier dishes like fried chicken, hearty pasta dishes or big sandwiches like a barbecue burger or a BLT to counterbalance the hop bitterness.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

I have always been a fan of the New Belgium beers and this one is pretty solid. It pours a clear amber color with decent carbonation and features an ABV of 6%. I consider this a better than average IPA. It has your standard barrage of hops that tend to overpower everything else.

Q:My father was recently in a car accident that was caused by the other driver involved. The negligent party's insurance company keeps calling my dad and trying to get statements from him. Does it make any sense to engage with the other driver's insurance company or should he simply refuse to communicate and instead seek advice from an injury attorney?

A:This is a great question and one that we receive and answer on a routine basis at Siesky Law Firm.

A little perspective here is helpful. First, think about the person injured in the collision. Most people are not litigious. What I mean is that most people are not looking to be in an accident and sue or hire a lawyer right away. In fact, most folks that are injured in a car wreck do not like the idea of hiring a lawyer and would rather be nice and try to “work it out” with the at-fault driver’s insurance carrier.

Next, think about insurance companies. Insurance companies are for-profit businesses, and the injury claims process is adversarial. So, insurance companies do what is in their own best interest, not that of the person or persons injured in collision. Moreover, insurance companies realize that most people injured in a collision have a "can’t we just work it out" mentality. Do you really think insurance companies do not seek to exploit injured people’s somewhat naive mentality?

Finally, insurance companies are in the business

of investigating and adjusting injury claims stemming from car collisions. People injured in collisions are not in the business of handling personal injury claims. As such, there is a large disparity in the knowledge of the laws, rules, what to do, what not to do and resources such as accident reconstructionists, investigators, surveillance, and technology.

There is an old saying in law that sums this up: "He who represents himself has a fool for a client."
