"SAY NOTHING" TOUR 2022 Frontman Tyler Connolly on the band's upcoming album, the division in America, anniversary celebrations for past records and more

F

or two decades now, THEORY (formerly Theory of a Deadman) has reigned as one of rock's biggest acts, effortlessly evolving from crowd-pleasing party anthems such as "Bad Girlfriend," "Bitch Came Back" and "Lowlife" to a more thought-provoking,

pop-leaning direction on 2017's Wake Up Call and 2020's Say Nothing. The former produced the critically-acclaimed number one Billboard US Mainstream Rock hit "Rx (Medicate)," a sobering minor-key ballad addressing America's prescription drug abuse epidemic; the latter was highlighted by "History of Violence" which examines the impact of domestic violence on women and the difficulty of escaping unhealthy relationships: "Tell me, why you ashamed?/ Too scared to run away/ You love him anyway/ Surviving just on the pain." This lyrical and musical growth came courtesy of frontman and primary songwriter Tyler Connolly who, approaching middle age, no longer felt fulfilled writing about selfish concerns. "You always want to tackle something new and challenging so as you get older you can say, 'Wow, I'm glad I did this,'" he says. And if there was any trepidation over changing course, Connolly need not have worried; longtime THEORY fans clearly appreciate the band's mature outlook these days - though they still crave the old school sound no matter the vacuous subject matter. It's all good, in other words - there's room enough in the band's concerts for both societal critiques and mindless fun. Connolly kindly spoke with News 4U ahead of the show at the Victory. Yeah, "Strangers" is another one of those songs where I was really kind of happy with, you know... I just woke up one morning and man, I was like, are we going to start fist-fighting our neighbors now? The band is originally from Canada, of course - and people here are always threatening to move there when things don't pan out for them politically, etc. I don't know, like, it's funny how the expectation is that Canada would take a bunch of people [laughs]. Time-twisting pop music collective roars back to life with 20's-themed show

L

ike everyone else in the entertainment industry, Scott Bradlee found himself - and his internationally-beloved music project Postmodern

Jukebox - sidelined during the pandemic. The wildly creative pianist had been gearing up to take the PMJ phenomenon back on the road for a Roaring 20's-themed show in 2020 but, as we all know, Covid had other plans. Two years later, it's all systems go. Now, on paper, re-imagining some of pop music's most enduring hits from a late night jazz club perspective may sound odd, but in practice it's truly life-affirming. For proof, just visit YouTube and check out any number of incredible covers that Bradlee and his cast of talented singers and musicians have pulled off: "Creep" (Radiohead) is north of 100 million views, followed closely by the likes of "Dream On" (Aerosmith), "Bad Romance" (Lady GaGa), "Careless Whispers" (Wham), "Black Hole Sun" (Soundgarden) and many more. Perhaps most impressively, PMJ recently whipped up a mind-blowing interpretation of the iconic Friends theme which thrillingly compresses the evolution of music into three minutes, moving seamlessly through the decades until the song's original composers, The Rembrandts, appear and finish it off in classic 90's style. Safe to say there's never a dull moment at a Postmodern Jukebox concert; expect the unexpected and you'll be richly rewarded!

NEWS4U FEBRUARY 2022 | UPCOMING EVENTS

FOUNDING MEMBER DOUG GRAY ON 50 YEARS OF MTB, THE LEGACY OF CHARLIE DANIELS, DEFINING "SOUTHERN ROCK" AND MORE Any discussion of the Southern rock genre springs three groups immediately to mind: Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd and, of course, The Marshall Tucker Band. Formed in Spartanburg, South Carolina, back in 1972, MTB have continued to keep the flame alive for 50 years now thanks to frontman and founding member Doug Gray who's vowed to remain a road warrior until his dying days. And for good reason. With a catalog of heartfelt, down-home songs that speak to multiple generations timeless tracks like "Can't You See," "Heard It in a Love Song," "Fire on the Mountain," "Searchin' for a Rainbow" and so many more - there's almost a sense of duty to share this organic, universal music with the fans, to sing the words that have touched so many people far beyond the friendly confines of the south. While some of the key players from the band's classic era are, sadly, long gone - including brothers Toy and Tommy Caldwell who both left this world far too soon - the MTB train rolls on with renewed energy and passion. Gray, as determined as ever to spread the gospel, so to speak, has assembled a fantastic team of musicians to help him preserve the legacy of such a legendary group: drummer B.B. Borden, bassist/vocalist Ryan Ware, multiinstrumentalist/vocalist Marcus James Henderson, guitarist/vocalist Chris Hicks and guitarist/vocalist Rick Willis. Together, they bring MTB's rich musical history alive onstage, defining the sound of Southern rock night after night.

We're basically a southern band that plays jazz, rhythm & blues...I don't know what to tell you except for we had B.B. King opening shows for us and stuff like that. and agreeing to it. And, as you know, it didn't happen. You know, it's nice to have Dave Mason out there with us sometimes; it's nice to have a lot of different bands - Firefall and people like that, but, you know, had it been with Charlie, it would have been a phenomenal success with all the years under our belt. You know, when we stood on stage and Charlie stood on stage...once you spread your legs out and you're standing there and you know that you're digging in, that means you're hurting - you're hurting to get that point across you want to make to let them [the audience] know that you mean what the hell you're singing to them. And that's why Charlie and I were so much alike. What does the term "Southern rock" mean to you? What bonds the likes of MTB and Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers? I think it's the fact that we grew up knowing that we didn't have anything - most Southern rock bands didn't; well, the real ones. And that included Greg [Allman] because he still to me - even though he's been gone for awhile - is still one of the best Southern rock singers that there ever was or will be. And you're hearing

The legendary Charlie Daniels, RIP, was a big part of the MTB story early on, playing on studio albums and often joining the band on stage - "Fire on the Mountain" being a classic example of how his fiddle playing elevated a song to new heights. As it turned out, News 4U was one of the last publications to speak with Charlie before his passing. Can you share some thoughts about your old friend? I was at the funeral. And Charlie and I had could get somebody to protest [about]. So

So, it's just the relationship that we can have as brothers and sisters that has created this sound because, you know what, when there's somebody that you see on the side of the stage, you invite them to come on out and sing with you. Other bands are too...they've got their nose in the air so high that they want to be a star. And sometimes they never reach that star. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre. com. EVANSVILLE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA PRESENTS:

NOTHIN' BLUES

BUT THE

The EPO welcomes vocalist Shayna Steele to the stage for a tribute to musical legends

T

he Evansville Philharmonic kicked off 2022 in style last month with a Classics Series performance highlighting the works of Mozart, Beethoven and Honegger. Now

the tri-state's favorite orchestra returns with the first of a trio of exciting Pops concerts that will pave the way to the EPO's season finale on April 30. Titled "Nothin' but the Blues," the February 13 performance featuring American singer, songwriter and Broadway stage actress Shayna Steele looks to showcase the influence of the blues in popular music - to explore the impact of the genre on iconic artists and bands such as Eric Clapton, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin by revisiting the musical legends who sang their way into history: Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Ma Rainey, Louis Armstrong and more. And there are few vocalists more equipped to bring those legends to life than Shayna Steele. Having spent eight years as a Broadway ensemble member in shows such as Rent and Hairspray and six years backing artists like Bette Midler, Rihanna, and Kelly Clarkson, she's increasingly becoming known for her accomplished solo work. 2015's Rise - featuring "Gone Under" - reached #3 on the U.S. iTunes jazz charts while the follow-up, 2019's Watch Me Fly, was set to eclipse that mark before the pandemic halted all touring and promotional activities. But Steele is determined to regain the momentum with a U.S. tour that's sure to please her loyal fanbase and win over new fans as well. Luckily, the tri-state is on the list of stops for Steele, so don't miss this great opportunity to see and hear an amazing talent on the Victory stage supported by the incomparable Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. And be sure to mark your calendars for the next Pops Series concert on March 19 when the EPO will celebrate 90 years of film composer John Williams, including performances of scores from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman, Jaws and more.

O BOTTOMS

UP!

STAY IN THE LOCAL LOOP AND CHECK OUT ALL THE PLACES YOU NEED TO BE IN THE NEW YEAR

H

ey, we get it - it's cold outside and that couch is feeling pretty comfy right about now. But even though

it's the dead of winter, there's no better time to explore the local nightlife with Valentine's Day and Mardi Gras on the horizon. Seriously, the tri-state has such a bounty of great establishments that it's almost criminal not to check out the scene and see what you've been missing. In fact, we're looking into taking legal action if you fail to comply with our wishes. Ok, that was a bluff. But, you know, it's a new year and you're kind of obliged to try new things and meet new people. So we would sincerely appreciate it if you'd take a gander at this handy guide we've compiled featuring the places you need to be in 2022. Each location has kindly advised us as to what drinks, apps and entrées to try upon arriving - and also noted any entertainment options for those interested in more than just a tasty beverage or meal. Which is to say that we've done all the leg work for you; all you have to do is study up on the following pages and then head out the door and experience firsthand what the tristate's best bars have to offer. It's that simple!

such inspirational tracks as 2018's "One Name" (featuring angelic vocals from AnnMarie Brown) and 2020's "I Need You Right Now" - the latter of which addressed his son Evin's diagnosis of Stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. To the rhythm of an off-kilter, stuttering beat, Tillman implores God to show himself and help him in his time of need: "Can I see your face?/ Am I missing something?/ Am I out of place?" Mercifully, his prayers were answered. Then there's the title track to Tillman's most recent album, Waiting Room, which is a prime example of his masterful lyrical flow and ability to create unique rhythms and musical hooks. Here he tells it like it is: "So what's the point of

DR. RENDEZ Three years in, genre-bending local band "re-finding footing" but still open to new directions

bands,

members were rehearsing in the front room of a north side home, powerfully blowing through a set of thrillingly chaotic songs at top volume - songs tapped for an upcoming EP that would fuse 90's rock and progressive rock with the force of metal and energy of punk. It was November of 2020 - smack dab in the middle of the pandemic - and everything, apart from the collapse of society, was looking up for this genre-bending group of extremely talented musicians. Or so it seemed. What followed, instead, was a lineup shake-up at the mic and, subsequently, a shelving of the recordings completed with local producer Steve Tyner - and, ultimately, a long stretch between live shows. But after drafting in a new

the overall effect is quite different from your standard drop-D tuning sludge-fest.

With Harmes' more aggressive style of singing, the band took the opportunity to branch out even more and explore a heavier sound. This approach resulted in the recent Tyner-recorded single "Harakiri/Jigai" - two and a half minutes of borderline death metal. And yet, with Photos: Benji Koelling (@benko.creative)

VOUS with an emphasis on treble - and his arsenal of complex chords and spidery runs often played high up on the fretboard, the overall effect is quite different from your standard drop-D tuning sludge-fest. Add in Logan's ever-pounding bass and drummer Tristan Arnold's relentless, unhinged attack on the skins and you've got the essence of rock. And the same can certainly be said for "Atlas," another recent single. Reportedly the first song the band ever wrote together, it's a 12-minute journey through all their influences that even serves up some Latin flavor and chill-hop because that's just how the Doctor rolls. In fact, the song is such a beast, it's been divided into sections for release; the first half - featuring Harmes on vocals once again - hit streaming services on New Year's Eve, giving everyone a reason to celebrate and throw back another cold one. But while the band plans to continue working with Tyner at Black Cat Recording and release more singles, the big picture is still incomplete. The core members - Arnold, Logan and Taleno - recently played a well-received show sans Harmes with Logan handling the bulk of the vocals and Taleno proving he can both shred on guitar and sing back-up simultaneously. So there's any number of directions Dr. Rendezvous can head at this juncture. Or, as Logan clarifies, "we're still a mixed bag." The guys do intend to collect all of their Tyner-recorded material to date (possibly including tracks cut with previous vocalist Dakota Madden) onto an official album at some point. But they're already looking ahead to a 90's-based production - a conceptual body of work with titles all pulled from the headlines of that grungy decade, including "Waco," "Woodstock '99," "Operation Desert Storm" and, inevitably, "Monica Lewinsky." Stay tuned and be sure to catch Dr. Rendezvous at Lamasco Bar & Grill on February 11. For more info, follow Dr. Rendezvous on Facebook or visit drrendezvous.com.

ZION ALBERT TRI-STATE'S REGGAE AUTHORITY DROPS "MARGINALIZED PEOPLE," A STIRRING ODE TO THE POWERLESS

W

hile it's true that most folks don't equate southern Indiana with the rise-above-oppression message behind much of reggae music, that's hardly deterred Zion Albert from

addressing society's ills in song and sharing his thoughts and feelings with the tri-state and far beyond. In fact, over the years he's built up quite the catalog of inspirational protest anthems and performed with the likes of The Wailers Band, Pato Banton, Mighty Diamonds, Luciano, Junior Reid and many more internationally-known acts and artists, including Baby Cham in Las Vegas in 2021. Following the release of last summer's The Armagideon which featured the single "Proliferate Uprising," Zion went back into the studio to create a stirring ode to the powerless. Uplifting yet defiant, "Marginalized People" takes on the plight of those who've fallen through the cracks and been left behind by society - but refuse to simply go away quietly: "We'll never, ever lose the faith, no way...We said we'll never, ever give up the fight, no way." It's a mantra that becomes more impactful as the track progresses with Zion's commanding lyrical flow driving home the point. Musically, the basic reggae chord structure allows for the message to be heard loud and clear - it's pure and from the heart. As noted, Zion has a vast back catalog, so be sure to check out zionalbert. com to hear more from the tri-state's reggae authority. GEORGIA FUNKADELIC Tri-state four-piece officially releases allinstrumental EP with grooves for days

E

xactly one year after dropping a well-received debut album that fused 70's funk and R&B with elements of blues and jazz, the tri-state's grooviest four-piece returns with the follow up

to Georgia's Pool Party - cheekily titled Georgia's After Party. There was simply more celebrating to be done, you see. And since every celebration deserves a killer soundtrack, band leader Matthew Frankic set about laying down some infinitely funky bass lines that guitarist Mickey Peaches, keyboardist Roy Micah and drummer Ben Ganster could expand upon and develop into rump-shaking instrumentals - tasty jams that could fill a dance floor in a hurry. While Pool Party featured Frankic on the mic, he was solely focused on creating unstoppable grooves this time - nothing to distract from the business at hand. Sequenced as if the band is holding said after party, the EP kicks off with "Invitation," a mid-tempo funk-fest to ease into the proceedings. As all four members take turns taking center stage over the track's three-plus minutes, it's clear that this is a gathering you need to attend. "We're Going" follows, picking up where "Invitation" left off but injecting some dirty guitar into the mix - raw and gnarly. The EP's oldest - and funkiest - composition, "Deluxe Vinyl" features some of Roy Micah's most inspired keyboard work and Peaches going all Chic on the six-string - the perfect lead-in to After Party's closing two tracks. Saving the best for last, Georgia Funkadelic get totally spacey on "No More Stranger," an addicting minor-key comedown before the deliciously melodic, Santana-esque "We'll Never Be the Same" brings the curtain down on this groovy celebration.

And now she's making her mark in Music City, where all hopeful country artists wind up eventually. A departure from previous releases such as "Dirt Road Riding" which captured her undeniably fun personality, this latest composition displays real maturity in her songwriting; the melody is achingly beautiful while the lyrics recount a fractured relationship: "I hate the rain/ It reminds me of harder days/ Like the day you ran away and said you couldn't be saved... Every memory washes away like the dust off a window pane." Explains Elpers, "Writing is like therapy for me." "I Hate the Rain" is available on all major streaming platforms. STRAIGHT LINE PRESS

90's-influenced tri-state rockers putting finishes touches on long-awaited EP

S

ometimes it pays to be patient, and that's certainly true in the case of Straight Line Press, the 90's-influenced rockers who first made waves in the tri-state music scene back in 2020.

It wasn't the ideal time to start a new project with live performance opportunities at a minimum, but one listen to the material SLP had recorded with Steve Tyner at Black Cat Recording put any such thoughts aside. Because, as early mixes of anthemic tracks like the Foo Fighters-inspired "Best Side" and wickedly grungy "Maybe" displayed, singer Jorell McIntosh possesses all the characteristics that make for a great frontman - charisma, swagger and a voice made for rock & roll; but he's also got a distinctive writing style on guitar that's a product of an odd tuning technique. It all added up to the promise of a truly exciting local release on the horizon. But not so fast. Here we are many months, two COVID variants and one less band member later, and the Tyner-recorded EP is just now about to drop. But that's perfectly ok - great, even - because in addition to the four tracks N4U got a taste of back in the early days of SLP, there's a couple of fantastic additions in "Try" and "Glory to the Ghost." The former is an ebullient, fist-pumping pop-punk track that McIntosh delivers with conviction as he acknowledges there's no shame in failing: "Sometimes you gotta get back up and give it one more try!"; the latter is a groove-monster that sounds like Saliva and Living Colour joined forces. McIntosh's hip-hop past is apparent here and elsewhere on the EP, bringing extra flavor to his up-front vocals. We'll "try" to bring you more on this hotly-anticipated new local release next month. Hang tight. For more info, follow Straight Line Press on Facebook.

DANNY BROWNING

F

or those who remember when the Funny Bone was all the rage in Evansville, routinely drawing big crowds for both regional and

nationally-known comedians, this one's for you. Because stand-up comic Danny Browning, a native of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, was right there in the thick of it, learning a little more about his craft each time he took the stage - though he's the first to admit how green he was about the art of joke-telling prior to that first five minute set over two decades ago. "The Funny Bone was the second club I'd been in in my entire life," he recalls. "The owner at the time let me do some time; I got off the stage and he said, 'Ok, I'll use you.' I was truly clueless - had no idea what he was talking about. I said, 'use me for what?'"

Southern Indiana -based stand-up comic looking to revitalize the Evansville comedy scene

Despite not quite comprehending that he'd been given the go-ahead to perform again, unexpectedly stumbling into a paying gig, Browning finally took the hint "and that's how I found my way into the Evansville comedy scene." He had actually moved here to take a job with WFIE - the number one TV station in the market - which saw him driving the live truck and setting up live shots in addition to getting the footage and editing everything before broadcast. "To this day I don't understand why they put me in charge of thousands of dollars worth of equipment," Browning says with a chuckle. He loved every minute, in truth, and still considers past coworkers such as Mike Blake and Jeff Lyons friends today. Best of all, his work schedule allowed for evening sets at the Funny Bone. But the lure of life on the road was strong - deep down inside, Browning wanted nothing more than to make people laugh whenever and wherever he could. And that meant giving up the security of his full-time position with WFIE and preparing to live as a "vagabond," literally criss-crossing the country for any and all opportunities to perform. "My first gig was in Parkersburg, West Virginia," Browning recalls. "Then I had another in Charleston and then the next week I was in Port Charlotte, Florida - I drove all the way down there and the next weekend drove all the way back to Livonia, Michigan. That's what my schedule was like after I left my job at the number one TV station in the market." Basically, Browning followed the money trail, though he experienced some lean

times for sure, including one particular evening when, short on cash, he feasted on Goldfish (the snack food) for sustenance in a hotel bar in North Carolina. There were also plenty of nights spent sleeping in his car among other sacrifices - all totally worth it in the long run. Because as the years rolled by, Browning developed into a damn good stand-up comic, able to adapt to most any crowd or situation. And he reached "a certain level where people knew who I was" - his confidence on stage blossomed and comedic peers took note. A look through Browning's website reveals that he's shared the stage with some very big names over the last 20 years, including the late Norm MacDonald, Louis CK, Lewis Black, Jennifer Coolidge, Roy Wood, Jr. and many more. Still, he never lost sight of where it all started in good old Evansville. And with Browning once again residing just outside of Louisville

benefit the likes of school groups and various organizations - "a proven formula for success" - Browning has found a home at Jennings Street Public House in Newburgh where he recently sold-out a show featuring some very talented regional comics. "Especially in Evansville it's a great way to raise money, but at the same time it works for me and my friends and fellow comedians," he explains. "Everybody wins, including the venue." Ultimately, Browning hopes to schedule events two nights a week - one show on Friday and two on Saturday. But he's already making an impact, even if a return to the glory days of the Funny Bone-era seems a bridge too far, perhaps. "I do understand that that was a different time," Browning says, "but I don't believe that Evansville is dead to comedy. It's a huge community - huge acts come through all the time and play the stadium. It's just a matter of creating a comedy club safe space that people can get used to on a more consistent basis." Be sure to catch Browning's next show at Jennings Street Public House on February 19 featuring headliner Mat Alano-Martin, a Bloomingtonbased comic who often appears on The Bob & Tom Show. BOURNE WHEN LATE NIGHT THOUGHTS ARE

With

FREDDIE BOURNE

TIME OFF IS AS IMPORTANT AS TIME ON

But, I realized that much of that thought process is a product of my previous careers where I felt that I always had to be “on” - checking my email constantly every time a red circle with a number popped up; checking Facebook in case there was something I needed to be prepared for in regards to my work load; and forgoing sleep in case I received a call about something that might impact my work activities, even if I was out of town hours away. Maybe it’s a nervous tick. Maybe it’s the need to feel more prepared and stave off the anxiety of under-preparedness. Or maybe it’s me losing sight of what’s considered important. The job I have now does encourage that time off. When I got hired in, the person I took over for told me to use the weekends for what they are meant for - to rest, relax, and focus on the other important things that will be there when the job may not be even a part of your livelihood.

52 | FEBRUARY 2022

Many of my previous jobs drilled the idea of self-care into mine and my colleagues' skulls, only to not really practice what they preached. Despite currently working in a position that is pretty much dependent on what is happening around me and the county every second (I'm a news reporter), I rarely feel the certainty or obligation to expect a phone call from a superior.

“TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND EXHALE. THAT EMAIL THAT

And yet, my attitude shows otherwise I'm still constantly on my phone in case “something” happens, thinking about what I have to accomplish for my day job when I’m working my second job as a musician and talking about work instead of focusing on the music.

WORK WEEK IS USED TO GET CAUGHT UP ON WORK. THE WEEKEND IS USED TO GET CAUGHT UP ON LIFE."

It gets upsetting. Especially when you realize that even if you are satisfied with what you’re doing, you cannot kick the old habits as post-traumatic stress and the Sunday scaries still echo as fresh as five years ago when it was commonplace that the work never stops. Take a deep breath and exhale. That email that was sent to you on Friday night will be there Monday morning. It can wait. The work week is used to get caught up on work. The weekend is used to get caught up on life.

read that quote over the New Year weekend celebration. While I enjoyed my time off, I had my sights set on getting a head start on the work week ahead. This continues to be a non-stop argument I have in my head almost every weekend when rethinking my stance on productivity.

MASTODON Hushed and Grim BMG/Trampled Under Hoof Music After the album Emperor of Sand won the Grammy for best rock album of 2017, Atlanta quartet Mastodon had to up their game. That album raised the bar, brought them critical acclaim, and marked a departure from their earlier sound. Their response? 2021’s Hushed and Grim, a double album, and at 90 minutes and 15 tracks, their longest to date. The album is a “sludge and trudge” replete with thundering drop-D chuggers and haunting melodies. However, I found it refreshing how they worked in more subdued moments of melancholy and light with several mid-tempo numbers. Hushed and Grim is a musical journey that immediately found heavy rotation on my playlist. With song titles like “Savage Lands,” “Teardrinker” (the surprisingly pop-sounding single), and “Gobbler of Dregs,” longtime fans won’t be disappointed with the album. Standouts are “The Crux,” “Sickle and Peace,” “Pushing the Tides” and “The Beast,” but there isn’t a bad song on this one! - Matt Alschbach

AK-747S I Love What You’ve Done with the Place Self-released Here it is - punk rock at its absolute best. Vancouver punks ak-747s self-release their fifth album, a sludgy garage-punk blast that is viciously political and absolutely gnarly. If the numbers on Spotify are accurate, ak-747s garner fewer than 50 monthly listeners - a crying shame if you ask me! I Love What You’ve Done With the Place is the best underground punk rock I’ve heard in a long time. Fusing doomed Black Sabbath-style guitar with the chaos and anger of 80s hardcore punk, ak-747s couldn’t sound cooler. If you like the nasty, raw punk of Pissed Jeans and Cheater Slicks or the political lyricism of MDC and Dead Kennedys, then ak-747s are the band for you. - Russ Finn

CAMPBELL, MALLINDER, BENGE Clinker Crépuscule With the unexpected loss of UK post-punk pioneer Richard Kirk - the heart and soul, and only remaining member, of Sheffield's groundbreaking Cabaret Voltaire - in 2021, there's been more attention placed on CV's former frontman, the alwayscharismatic Stephen Mallinder. His place in music history secured, "Mal" has continued to explore new synthetic pathways, most notably with Wrangler - a heavily analog trio rounded out by electronics wizard Benge and Phil Winter. For his latest project, Mallinder reconnects with Benge while also welcoming Julie Campbell (aka LoneLady) into the mix to produce the Clinker mini LP, a six-song deconstruction of beats and synth patterns held together by Campbell's layered, experimental guitar work. She even contributes a surprisingly melodic, Janet Jackson-esque

BAILEY ALLEN BAKER Palish Landscape Mishap Records

vocal turn on closing track "Dereliction Magical" which works a charm, perfectly playing off Mal's typically menacing approach on standouts "Camouflage" and "Condition Collapsing." Kirk would be proud. Johnny Fletcher

Inspired by Marty Robbins and the Flying Burrito Brothers, Idahoan singer-songwriter Bailey Allen Baker releases his debut EP Palish Landscape on the new Boise-based label Mishap Records. Baker’s style of country sounds equal parts old school and modern, borrowing from country music’s legends, while adding a haunting spin that makes the songs sound fresh. The resulting five songs softly creep along like a cowboy drifting through a ghost town. Baker’s sad western ballads have a slow trot to them, while his voice croons alongside lap steel guitars, harmonicas, and the slow steady strumming of his acoustic guitar. The EP is a mere 18 minutes, and my only criticism is that I want more! This is a great debut and I’ll be eagerly awaiting what comes next. - Russ Finn

TAXIWAY Absence Self-released Nashville indie rockers Taxiway release their debut LP Absence - a collection of nine ethereal rock songs filled with rich lyricism and wonderful storytelling. There are hints of 90s and 2000s dream pop throughout the album, with sonic nods to Mazzy Star, Slowdive, and The XX, but Taxiway deviates from the dream pop path with reverb-heavy heartland rock songs. The combination of frontman Mike Aurand’s emotive and descriptive lyrics mixed with the soft, beautiful sounds of his band reminds me a lot of the work of acclaimed singer/ songwriter Julien Baker or local Evansville heroes Thunder/Dreamer. Though Absence is great throughout its 40 minute runtime, I would highly recommend checking out the standout songs “Prime Meridian,” “House Upon the Sand,” and “Ten Miles High.” - Russ Finn

BLUES WITH BRAGIN POLLY O’KEARY & THE RHYTHM METHOD 50 Self-Released

An award-winning trio from the Pacific Northwest, Polly O'Keary & The Rhythm Method return with 50, a sharp collection of blues-rock that showcases a dazzling array of influences, including Zydeco, country, funk, jazz, rockabilly, surf and rock & roll. “Brand New Day” kicks things off with O’Keary’s funky bass matching the upbeat lyrics about someone looking on the bright side of life as things fall into place. David Miller’s guitar solo seems reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix. “Too Much Like I Care” features a bit of a 1950s feel and will get your toes tapping. Tommy Cook’s drumming matches the heavy tone on “Can’t Catch Me.” Miller begins with a searing guitar on “Smiling” that deceptively boasts a somber melody as O’Keary sings about keeping a positive attitude during difficult times. “People On The Corner” discusses the masses that society seems to forget. The Latin-inspired groove on “Strange Way of Showing Love” deals with a man who exercises too much control over his woman. All of the musicians show off their talent in the song’s middle section. “ABCs” showcases bluesy but mature lyrics to help children learn the first three letters of the alphabet. The trio starts off with a jam vibe on “I’m Not Guilty” before O’Keary starts singing in a tone similar to Janis Joplin about her innocence in the face of accusations against her reputation. The album closes with “American Highways,” a hard rock-tinted tune about hitting the road at the end of a long work week.- Paul Bragin

FEBRUARY BEER REVIEWS This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. MYRIAD AUNT SISSY DOUBLE IPA

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4

This Double IPA is dark amber, slightly hazy, with a thick tan head. Notes of toffee and caramel on the nose and the palate, this local DIPA is slightly sweet on the palate. This has a medium body and finishes with a nice hop bitterness and a hint of pineapple. This is a very enjoyable DIPA, perfect for the season with a 9% ABV to warm you up.

KONA HANALEI ISLAND IPA

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.25

This pours a clear yellow with a thin, quickly dissipating head. There are tropical and citrus notes on the nose. This has a light to medium body with passion fruit, orange and mango flavors that dominate the palate. It has a light bitterness on the finish. Well-balanced and easy drinking, I’ll be having another one again soon.

PAUL BRAGIN - 5

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4.5

A thick off-white head crowns this brown IPA and evaporates very slowly. A pleasant balance of malt and hops fill the nose. The flavor balance remains with the first taste, but quickly gives way to a very strong hop flavor that continues during a very long finish. This local craft beer needs to be in the refrigerator of everyone who enjoys hoppy beers. Pair it with spicy Mexican food or barbecued pork ribs

This is a hazy, amber-colored beer with an ABV of 9% - and it's local! I like the smoky hops flavor and it has a little earthy tone to it. Another plus is that it comes in a pint can. I have had a few Myriad offerings in the past; they always produce solid beers. Now I will have to go get this from the tap. I hope we get to review more from Myriad beers.

56 | FEBRUARY 2022

A thin white head rests on this IPA and takes a moment to evaporate. The scent of passion fruit, orange and guava controls the nose. A burst of carbonation hits the tongue with the initial tasting, followed by hops. This beer could see a rise in popularity during the summer. The slightly lower alcohol content makes it a good option for a session beer. Pair it with seafood, tacos, pizza or pasta.

This is a light, hazy amber beer with decent carbonation. This is very easy to drink. I'm a fan of the other Kona beers and this one does not disappoint. I enjoy the sweet hops which are not overbearing as often is the case with IPAs. This brings out the tropical flavors like a little orange and passion fruit.

STONE HAZY IPA

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3

Pours a hazy orange yellow hue with a thin white head. Citrus notes on the nose, followed on the palate by tropical notes of pineapple and mango. It is lighter-bodied than many IPAs and finishes with a grapefruit peel bitterness.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick white head forms on this cloudy IPA and never totally disappears. A good amount of hops dominates the scent profile. The hop presence continues with the first sip of the beer and continues in the long finish, along with notes of citrus. People who enjoy hoppy beers need to try this one. Pair it with a variety of foods like spicy Indian curry dishes, Mexican food or any number of hot Asian cuisines.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

This is a cloudy, straw-colored beer with a 6.7% ABV - which is the best thing I can say. I had high expectations since I'm a Stone fan - and it is a decent IPA with pretty good hops - but it has an aftertaste that I can’t describe. Maybe it's just me and the other reviewers didn't have any issues; however, I'm going to stick with the other offerings from Stone.

NEWS4U FEBRUARY 2022 | BEER REVIEWS

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3 BLUE MOON LIGHT SKY

This light beer pours a hazy orange, with a white head that dissipates rapidly. Strong notes of tangerine on the nose (it is brewed with tangerine peel) appear. Effervescent and light on the palate, with prominent orange citrus flavors, it tastes closer to a hard seltzer than a wheat beer. With a 4% ABV and 95 calories, this easy drinking beer may be the thirst quencher you are looking for.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick white head tops this beer when poured into a wheat beer glass and stays for a long time. A good amount of tangerine peel controls the scent. The flavor of wheat hits the tongue first, followed

quickly by tangerine peel that lingers during the long finish. This excellent lighter offering needs a spot in your refrigerator during the summer. Pair it with lighter foods like chicken, salads, other leafy green vegetables or street tacos.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

This is a hazy, golden-colored beer with an ABV of 4% - so I'm planning on this to be a good summer beer. I have wanted to try Light Sky for awhile but I just wasn’t blown away. It's a “light” beer and it lives up to its billing. The flavor is very faint. I got a slight hint of tangerine but even less of the wheat. The best part is that it comes in a pint can. A little disappointing since I'm a Blue moon fan.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

Ask an Attorney WITH BRIAN K. SMITH

Q:

I spent New Year's Eve out with friends at a local bar where I had a few beers over several hours. On the way home, I was pulled over by a cop (he said I was weaving in and out of the lane) and he administered a breathalyzer - which he said registered above the legal limit.
