A Message from the Head of School A Story of Sanford Firsts and Finals

Dear Friends of Sanford, This school year is bringing a plethora of new experiences for me, and they’re unrelated to living through the COVID pandemic. For the first time in my career as a head of school, Nicol and I are senior parents. Yes, our oldest daughter, Stella, is a member of the Sanford class of 2022. Stella was seven years old when we moved to Delaware from St. Louis. She joined Sanford as a second grader in the homeroom class of one of our many outstanding teachers—the late Krista Berneike. Stella acclimated to Sanford quickly, which isn’t surprising because of the welcoming nature of the Warrior community. Fast forward ten-and-a-half years. Now it is dawning on Nicol and me, as it has for all senior parents before us, this is it. End of the line. For Stella and her pals, this is a year of finals. Final field hockey season. Final homecoming dance. Final SRTC production. And the list goes on. This summer, Stella said to me, “You were pretty smart about something.” That got my attention. She went on to say: “When we were little kids, you hired great babysitters. Older kids like Megan Yung (’13), Mackenzie Frederick (’15), Alexandra Somerville (’16), and Caroline Wilson (’16). Those girls did things at Sanford; they played sports and were leaders. I saw them as role models. I knew when I got older, I wanted to be like them.” Talk about worlds converging! The impact that past Sanford graduates had on Stella is evident and real. Like the alumnae she reminisced about during the summer, Stella is all in at Sanford. She has honed her leadership and teamwork skills working with the Student Council, Honor Council, literary magazine, and yearbook club. Soccer is Stella’s main sport. This winter, in true Sanford fashion, she decided to take on the challenges of a new sport—basketball—for the first time. I don’t share this story to brag or “flex” as the kids say. These firsts and finals aren’t about Stella or me; they’re about Sanford. We moved across the country eleven years ago to find a school for our family. Today, as we look forward to the first Anderson child’s Sanford graduation on June 10th, I know with all my heart that we made the right move. Stella will attend Gettysburg College in the fall and play soccer for the Bullets. Like all Sanford graduates, she will carry the lessons she learned here in her head and heart for the rest of her life. Stella is now babysitting Sanford lower schoolers. I hope some of those children take note of the Sanford path Stella has followed—the one modeled by so many terrific role models—and see themselves taking on leadership roles when it is their turn to do so. This is how we build legacy and tradition—from year to year, generation to generation. The names and faces will change, but the core of the Sanford spirit rings forever. Warmly, Mark J. Anderson

Makinghis Mark: The Impact of Sanford’s Head of School—Then, Now & Moving Forward

H

ave you ever heard a forgotten song from childhood and felt instantly transported back to a specific moment in time? Caught the lingering scent of pine trees or felt the leaves crunch underfoot in just the right way, and you’re suddenly sixteen again, walking across your high school quadrangle on the way to AP Bio class? There’s a science behind that nostalgia—and it’s not necessarily about yearning for the past. The feeling of fond remembrance that’s triggered by familiar sights, sounds, and smells can actually help you better understand who you are today and what you want to achieve tomorrow. It can motivate you to connect with others and feel more optimistic and resilient about the future. As psychological scientist Clay Routledge says, “Nostalgia is one of the self-regulatory tools we use to remind ourselves that we matter.” Perhaps that’s why Mark Anderson was so drawn to the history of Sanford School when he first became head of school in 2011. In his first six months on campus, Mark set out to learn as much as he could about Sanford, reading the writings of previous heads, unearthing and displaying original artist renderings of the campus, and moving his young family into the head of school residence, Arunchala. At the time, Mark said this look back was not about being focused on the past, but about staying true to Sanford’s roots while moving the school forward. “We will always honor and celebrate our past and use Sanford’s history as a beacon to guide us as we continue our journey as a unique and exceptional school,” he said back then—a sentiment that still guides our community ten years later. Since Sanford’s founding, the school’s history and traditions have been motivating forces, pushing our community forward while uniting current students and alumni through shared past experiences. Today, Mark continues to use the light of the past to look ahead. He recently renewed his contract with the Sanford Board of Trustees for an additional six years. His continued leadership will make him one of the longest-serving heads in our area and the second-most tenured Sanford head of school. At Sanford, there’s plenty to be nostalgic about—and plenty about which to look forward. Let’s celebrate this exciting time in our school’s history by looking back then, when Mark first started his headship, to now, when our campus is growing and thriving, and then glimpse at how we’re on the move to the future.

2011 Then… 3

In 2011, Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” was rocking the airwaves, Harry Potter was saying goodbye in the theatres, and an estimated 2 billion people watched Britain’s Prince William marry Kate Middleton. On the Sanford campus, things were just as grand. Enrollment was steady at 575 students, the school’s endowment was $7.4 million, the annual fund raised $413,488, and the school awarded $1.8 million in financial aid. Sanford was moving ahead with the times and had three computer labs (with shared devices) available to students. The student body reflected 25.8% racial diversity, with 5% for faculty and staff. Seventeen summer enrichment classes brought in 145 students and a gross income of $65,425. In 2011, Sanford was celebrating the back-to-back state championships of both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams (which made Delaware history!). Sanford’s Upper School students were just starting the Sanford News Network, and The Sanford Repertory Theatre Company (SRTC) delivered two stellar productions— “Lend Me a Tenor” for the fall play and “Thoroughly Modern Millie” for the musical. Back then, the Anderson family had just moved into Arunchala, continuing a tradition dating back to Sanford’s founding. Two of Mark and Nicol’s three children—Stella and Finley—were in Sanford’s grade 2 and kindergarten, while Oliver was only 3 years old. They had fun exploring the creek and riding bikes on the Quad. “The Anderson children are very happy here, and we all feel very fortunate to be part of this amazing community,” said Nicol Anderson about moving the family onto campus.

2021 Now... 5

In the last year, as the world rebounded from the COVID-19 pandemic, Harry Potter was re-opening on Broadway, Meghan and Harry were the royals on everyone’s lips, and Adele … came back on our radios. Much has changed on the Sanford campus—and not just in numbers. Enrollment reached 650 this year, our endowment is now $13.5 million, our Annual Fund raised $600,000, and we have more than doubled the financial aid awarded, to $4.7 million. Our summer enrichment program has grown to include 351 students and 30 classes, bringing in a gross income of $105,475. Today, our student and faculty population are improving to better reflect the world around us, yet we acknowledge there is much work to be done to bring diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to Sanford School. Our student body is now 26% racially diverse, with 8% racial diversity for faculty and staff. We have appointed a DEI Director and an International Student Coordinator, and have instituted affinity groups, professional development, and classroom initiatives in order to help create a community where every student can be seen and belong as their authentic self. Our campus itself has undergone significant changes in the past decade. It is now fully wireless, indoors and out. In addition to our three computer labs, we have the Pirnie STEM Lab and Tech Center, 3D printers, 1:1 devices for grades 1–12, and Swivl robots, which enhanced remote teaching and learning during the pandemic. We have made upgrades and campus improvements to: ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Sanford Hall du Pont Library The former Geipel Gymnasium Quigley Hall The Middle School interior, exterior, and playground

■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Lower School’s Yearsley Hall and Library Arunchala Orchard Cottage Stewart Cottage Kidder Hall The Kenneth D. Jones Memorial Chapel.

We’ve strengthened Sanford’s athletic program with the Struthers Family Sports Center, two Bermuda grass fields, a baseball fence and bullpen, and scoreboards on all fields. We’ve also added sailing, instructional fall tennis, and a Middle School dance team to our athletic offerings. Inside the classrooms, we’ve implemented a rotating schedule to better serve our students’ needs, added Middle School and Upper School electives, and hired a second full-time college counselor. Our focus on student health and wellness has expanded to include Social Institute programming, annual Healthy Relationships programming, an Annual Wellness Day, and a full-time Lower School counselor.

As for the Anderson family, they still call Arunchala their home—however, Stella is preparing to graduate in June 2022 and head to Gettysburg College, where she will continue the successful soccer career she began on Sanford’s fields. Finley, who is passionate about performing with the choir and SRTC, is aiming to join SRTC’s 10 Show Club. Oliver loves to read, a passion fostered in Sanford’s classrooms and libraries, and he still enjoys running around campus—but now as part of the Middle School Cross Country and Track teams. “Today, a new chapter of Sanford’s history is being written,” Mark wrote recently. “I look forward to filling these next pages with you.”

...and on the Move

And fill those pages he will, as Mark resumes his Head of School position for another six years. With so much to reflect upon, and so much to celebrate today, what does this next chapter hold? In the coming years, our school will continue to grow its programs, people, and facilities. Right now, we are planning a capital campaign to update the Nancy C. Sawin Math/Science Center, which will create outdoor space for environmental work, new lab spaces with modern tools, new classrooms and light-filled common spaces for collaboration, and new courses like Advanced Robotics, Marine Science, and more (Check out pages 10 and 11 for an artist’s conceptual rendering of the new facility.). In addition, we will be updating Hebb Hall, one of our most historic buildings and home to our Lower School and Middle School art programs. The makeover will provide brighter, larger art studios; a deck; and spaces where creativity can flourish. By focusing on growing our endowment, we will ensure future generations benefit from Sanford’s long history of providing outstanding learning opportunities to students. Our DEI focus will also continue. Sanford lives our motto “no talent lies latent” by valuing diversity of culture, ethnicity, race, spirituality, gender, sexual orientation, learning styles, socio-economic status, and interests. The work we’re doing today illuminates the work we must continue to do to build a welcoming, empathetic community. At Sanford, we are lucky to have a school story that comprises both a rich legacy and a promising outlook. Yet the story that we collectively write today is the one that we will conjure in the future — and one day, the peace of a silent walk through the woods, or the fondness of a favorite song, may bring you back here, to this moment. Together, let’s continue to make these moments to remember.

Campus Transformation continues with new STEM Center

Since 1969, the Nancy C. Sawin Math/Science Center has served as the home of Sanford’s exceptional Upper School math and science programs. Dark and dated, the 52-year-old building does not meet the 21st-century needs of our students and teachers. School leaders and the Board of Trustees have begun planning for the transformation of the building into a state-of-the-art science, technology, engineering, and math center. The projected cost of the project is $6,000,000. Several donors have already committed to supporting this initiative, and we will be launching a capital campaign in the future. Although we have not finalized the design for our new STEM Center, we have been working with our architect to create conceptual artist renderings, which are presented on these pages. We encourage you to stay tuned for more information about this project in future communications. In the meantime, if you would like to learn more before the campaign begins, or if you are interested in supporting this new campus enhancement, please contact Associate Head of School for Advancement Jaime Morgan at morganj@sanfordschool.org or 302.235.6504.

Report of Giving

P

rivate schools are often ranked or evaluated on criteria such as college placement, academic achievements, athletic accomplishments, awards in artistic expression, and community service hours. While this is not an exhaustive list, an often-overlooked barometer of a school’s sense of worth is the measure of generosity and financial support expressed by the community it serves. Sanford’s achievement of excellence is inextricably embedded in our motto No Talent Lies Latent and our mission to prepare students to meet the demands and responsibilities of the future in the broader world. Quantifying excellence using these criteria is not about numbers. The measurement is all about people and their stories. During the past two years, we have seen countless examples of community members living our motto and mission. Whether they were facing the daily adversity of the COVID pandemic, helping victims affected by the savages of natural disasters, or fostering a sense of belonging at Sanford, our students, faculty, and staff have embodied the resilience and responsiveness needed to succeed during challenging times. Throughout the last school year, our Sanford community and the broader community recognized Sanford’s unwavering ability to effectively and humanely address challenges. On the pages that follow, in the Annual Report of Giving, you will see 2020–2021 Sanford success stories. The report also honors and acknowledges our donors, whose generosity reflects the esteem in which Sanford is held.

Dear Sanford Supporters, The 2020-2021 school year was certainly a memorable one. Sanford leadership, faculty, and staff rose to the challenge of running the school during the global pandemic. Sanford students were resilient and had the option to be on campus or learn remotely—never missing a beat. The amazing faculty reimagined how to teach in new and creative ways. Nurse Conway and Nurse Winner worked tirelessly to keep the community safe and healthy. It was a true team effort. Through all the uncertainty, Sanford thrived in many ways. A few highlights of the 2020–2021 school year:

Ted Dwyer, Heather Dwyer, Brandon Dwyer, and Ashley Dwyer celebrate Brandon's graduation during Commencement 2021.

Enrollment was the highest it has been in over a decade with 650 students across all three divisions.

Sanford’s Annual Fund raised nearly $650,000— a new record!

The Home & School virtual auction was a huge success with over $70,000 going towards teacher professional development programs and summer study initiatives.

Our endowment grew to over 12 million—the highest in the school’s 90-year history.

Total giving to Sanford exceeded $3,000,000, which includes annual fund, capital improvements, endowment, and more.

None of this would be possible without all of you! We are grateful for a community that strives to ensure that Sanford provides the finest experience for our current students as well as the generations to come—and that No Talent Lies Latent! Thank you for your continued support of the school we love. I look forward to continuing our momentum throughout the 2021–2022 school year. Sincerely,

f you ask a Sanford community member to describe the 2020–2021 school year, you will probably hear responses such as “atypical,” “different,” and “unusual.” Although COVID-19 required changes to our campus, programs, and protocols, what never changed was Sanford’s outstanding spirit and strength. Here are a few glimpses into moments that touched the hearts of Warriors near and far.

Performing Arts

T

hroughout the 2020–2021 school year, members of our community were grateful that Sanford students could continue pursuing excellence in the performing arts. Although the COVID-19 pandemic prevented us from hosting on-campus audiences, our fall and spring arts festivals, the Lower School Spring Concert, and two Sanford Repertory Theatre Company (SRTC) productions provided opportunities for our student-performers to showcase their talents. Adapting to COVID protocols required reimagining some events; however, as SRTC Producer Clint Williams shared, “Student interest in the performing arts never waned. EVERGREEN SOCIETY The Evergreen Society is representative of the Sanford Pine, the school’s ubiquitous symbol. The society recognizes the commitment members of our community make by choosing to secure the school’s future through a planned gift or including Sanford as a charitable recipient in their will. The symbolism of the evergreen conveys that the gift these members bestow upon the school will, in fact, provide both shelter and color throughout all seasons of the school’s life—through the beautiful springs of renewal, the spectacular colors of the fall, and the harshest winters. These seasons parallel not only the life of the student body within a school year, but a school within its life cycle. Through these seasons, the evergreen remains a fixed constant—tall, straight, and proud. Those who become members of the Evergreen Society are indeed securing that constancy.

Boys’ Basketball Program in Good Hands With Tyrone Perry

S

uccessful basketball coach. Community leader. Advocate for studentathletes. Those are a few of the descriptors Head of School Mark Anderson uses when speaking about Tyrone Perry, who succeeded Stan Waterman as Sanford’s boys’ basketball coach. A 1999 graduate of the University of Delaware, where he played basketball for former head coach Mike Brey, Coach Perry is the Athletic Director and Teen Engagement Coordinator at the Clarence Fraim Boys and Girls Club. His resume includes assistant coaching roles with the University of Delaware men’s and women’s teams, as well as with the Mount St. Mary’s University men’s team. Ty has also served as the Executive Director of the McLaughlin Dream Chasers Program, which inspires and supports athletically gifted and primarily at-risk students to take another educational step beyond high school and realize their full potential as caring, productive, responsible citizens.

Sanford Director of Athletics Joan Samonisky notes, “It is a big responsibility to hire the right person to lead each of our Warrior sports teams. I am excited to have Tyrone Perry lead the Sanford boys’ basketball team following the departure of Stan Waterman. I feel we found the perfect fit! Ty is a great addition to the Sanford School community, and we all wish him great success in this new era of Sanford basketball excellence.” Regarding his acceptance of the position, Coach Perry said: “I am beyond excited to join the Sanford organization and grateful for the opportunity to continue the school’s legacy of basketball excellence. I truly appreciate Joan and Mark’s warm welcome to the Sanford basketball family.”

Then and Now....and on the Move WINTER 2021

“CHAMPIONS BEHAVE LIKE CHAMPIONS BEFORE THEY ARE CHAMPIONS.” – Bill Walsh, former San Francisco 49ers head coach and three-time Super Bowl champion

Sanford Says Goodbye to Coaching Legend Stan Waterman

A

nyone familiar with Sanford’s boys’ basketball program knows that Stan Waterman, the coach who led the program for 28 years, lived the philosophy shared by Bill Walsh. Coach Waterman’s teams captured a record-setting eight state championship titles for Sanford, and many of the players went on to continue their athletic careers in college. While success was sweet, the hallmark of Coach Waterman’s career was his stellar mentorship of his players. Whether he was coaching Sanford student-athletes or players on USA national teams, Stan distinguished himself by putting personal development and sportsmanship ahead of athletic achievement. As a role model for young people, he worked to instill the values that helped athletes achieve their

full potential as adults, beyond the basketball court. During the summer of 2021, Stan received an opportunity to share his immense talent at the collegiate level. Delaware State University (DSU), which is home to a Division I basketball program, offered

Stan the position of head coach for the men’s basketball team. Stan accepted DSU’s offer and began a new chapter in his coaching career. When sharing his thoughts about Stan’s departure from Sanford, Head of School Mark Anderson said: “While

many outside of the Sanford community know Stan as the coach of esteemed Warriors’ hoops teams, Stan’s day job as Upper School dean of students is an important part of his legacy. His even keel, kind manner, and thoughtful demeanor helped shape our positive Upper School culture. Always student-centered with a focused approach on growth and reflection, Stan has been instrumental in helping students learn from their mistakes. We will miss his daily presence in the Upper School as much as we will in the gym. It is never easy to lose a valuable colleague like Stan Waterman. However, I celebrate what Stan has done at and for Sanford, and I ask everyone in our community to join me in congratulating Stan as he embarks on his new adventure at Delaware State University.”
