What a packed August we have just seen with the eyes of the world on Paris for the 23rd Olympiad.

I was riveted, not just by the sport, but by some of the incredible stories that came out of the Games. Big congratulations to all those Hertfordshire athletes who represented our county so well. As I watched I couldn’t help thinking about the correlation between the dedication needed for sport and what is required to lead a successful business.

It was a theme I wrote about in my recent column in the Welwyn Hatfield Times and I know from speaking to our business community that it resonated with so many people. Keeping with the theme of the Olympics, I am beyond proud to be able to welcome former international swimmer Sharron Davies to be a keynote speaker at our Wellbeing Conference in October.

Sharron, who represented Team GB at three Games – starting at just 13 – was seen poolside in Paris, interviewing the swimmers. Now, she is coming to talk to us about wellbeing and fitness and the effect they can have on our mental health. She is a British sporting icon and I am so happy that she is coming to join us.

Hertfordshire’s proactive life sciences sector showcased at summit

Experts discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the sector

More than 4,000 people work in life sciences across 250 companies in Hertfordshire and the county is seen as a proactive and attractive inward investment location for the sector.

The sector contributed around £5.3 billion to the local economy in 2022 and is set for considerable expansion making it an ideal topic for the Chamber’s latest sector summit at Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst (SBC).

CEO Donna Schultz said: “Life sciences have been high on our agenda for years, as we recognise their importance to the county and the many companies within its associated supply chain.

“This summit supported our work on behalf of the Local Skills Improvement Plan, for which many of our members have provided valuable input.

Guest speakers were SBC Chief Executive Officer Dr Sally Ann Forsyth OBE, Hatfield Park Estates Director Anthony Downs and Paul Witcombe, who is Sector Lead: Life Sciences and Advanced Manufacturing at Hertfordshire Futures, formerly Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership.

Sally Ann discussed the role SBC played in the growth of the Stevenage Cluster. SBC is globally recognised at the centre of Europe’s largest cell and gene cluster where companies develop and commercialise cutting edge therapies.

Companies based there employ more than 4,000 people and it is home to the likes of GSK, the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult, LifeArc, Cytiva and a growing cluster of start-up companies which have raised more than £3.6 billion in funding.

and specialist intervention is needed to increase success to commercialisation.

SBC is currently working on its Stevenage campus expansion plan with Reef Group and UBS Asset Management. They are expected to deliver up to £900m of investment alongside an estimated 1.4 million square feet of laboratory and office facilities, providing space for up to 5,000 new jobs.

It is predicted that in the next three to five years Hertfordshire’s life sciences sector will see sustained growth across medical technologies as well as biopharmaceuticals through the expansion of existing businesses and inward investment.

During the same period, it is also predicted the area’s cell and gene therapy organisations will accelerate their commercialisation journey and more new businesses will follow.

Paul said the sector needs a reliable supply of talent, early stage business support and finance, an international profile, strong levels of networking, effective commercial property solutions and digital infrastructures.

He concluded by highlighting several opportunities for the sector, including the establishment of an emerging industrial cluster and the potential to scale growth companies.

Finally, Anthony Downs discussed the Gascoyne Estates’ desire to find a partner to deliver the Hatfield Innovation Campus. The intention is it will become a hub for science and technology talent where research and design companies can scale up.

Moving to a cheaper, greener energy system

A recent poll of small businesses showed that nearly two thirds1 of Britain’s business owners and senior decision makers think it’s important to embrace environmental issues, with many also seeing financial benefits as a result.

From those polled, 45 percent say that the changes they have made have saved them money, with 40 percent believing that becoming more sustainable has attracted more customers, as well as enhancing their reputation within the local community (44 percent).

With running costs remaining a concern for many small business owners, one in three polled2 say they are keeping a closer eye on their energy bills. When it comes to managing energy usage and costs, one small step small business owners can take, is to get a smart meter installed. They are the next generation of gas and electricity meters that are being installed in small businesses and households in Great Britain, replacing traditional meters.

When it comes to running a business, even making small changes and improvements can make a big difference, whether it’s saving money or being good for the planet. Getting a smart meter can help owners to understand exactly how much energy they are using and help them to

control energy costs. A smart meter can also help identify ways to reduce energy consumption – which is good for budgets, as well as the planet.

Whether you own or rent your business premises, you may be eligible for a smart meter, and if you are renting, but pay your own energy bills, you can ask your supplier to install one3

Smart meters have lots of benefits for small businesses, including:

• Accurate billing: smart meters measure energy usage in near realtime, so no more manual readings or estimated bills. This means you only pay for the energy you use, which can help with managing cashflow

• Control: the data provided by smart meters can give you more control over your business’ energy spend, helping you monitor energy usage and identify where cost savings can be made

• Access to historic energy usage data: small businesses with a smart meter can request free

access to 12 months of data from their energy supplier. This could help with budgeting and reduce bill shock. It could also help you plan for your next bill by identifying any trends or patterns in your energy use across the year

As well as helping to give you more control of your business budgeting, smart meters are playing an important role in Great Britain’s energy infrastructure upgrade, as we continue to increase our use of cheaper, greener renewable energy sources.

The data smart meters provide is key to this innovation, and will enable us to buy, store and consume energy differently to the way we do today, gathering the information the energy networks need that will help the energy system better manage supply and demand. This will make the whole system more efficient and able to use more renewables such as wind and solar power.

While the British summer may have been a bit hit and miss this year, the sun did come out as the Chamber celebrated its annual Summer Garden Party with Sopwell House.

On a glorious evening, more than 400 people representing members from across the county gathered in the beautiful hotel grounds to raise a glass to mark 100 years of the Chamber.

Hertfordshire’s Lord-Lieutenant Robert Voss CBE CStJ and High Sheriff Annie Brewster were among the guests invited to enjoy an evening of tasty food and summer drinks.

Donna said: “It was such a wonderful evening in relaxed surroundings. We were so pleased that the sun decided to shine on us for what was a special event in our centenary year.

“Everyone is so busy in their day-to-day working lives that it is a real pleasure to be able to take some downtime with business friends and colleagues and enjoy a summer’s evening with good food and drink.”

Bleak trade picture for SME exporters

A survey from the British Chambers of Commerce is painting a depressing picture for small businesses trading overseas.

The BCC’s Trade Confidence Outlook for Q2 2024 shows most SME exporters’ overseas sales are flatlining, with only a quarter (27 per cent) witnessing an increase in export sales.

William Bain, Head of Trade Policy at the BCC, said: “Our research shows the Government will have its work cut out in trying to revitalise UK exports, as they continue to underperform.

“But it has already taken some steps to help firms turn a corner. This includes its trade strategy announcement, restarting trade negotiations in vital markets, joining the World Trade Organisation’s e-commerce agreement and committing to improving our relationship with the EU.”

Conducted by the BCC’s Insights Unit, the survey receives responses from around 2,000 UK SME exporters.

It shows the percentage of SME exporters reporting increased exports has been broadly static since the pandemic, with a slight three percentage point uptick in Q2. Overall, 52 per cent reported no change, and 21 per cent reported a decrease. SMEs are now more likely to report decreased exports compared to before the pandemic and Brexit.

In Q2 2018, only 14 per cent of SME exporters reported a decrease in overseas sales.

By contrast, domestic demand for SME exporters remains consistently more buoyant, with 37 per cent reporting an increase in domestic sales in Q2 2024.

The one bright spot is SME manufacturers, with 31 per cent reporting an increase in exports. This compares to SME services exporters supplying end customers (B2C), where 25 per cent saw an increase, while 24 per cent of firms supplying services to other businesses (B2B) saw a rise.

The picture for advance orders was less rosy, as all three sectors show slippage, with 28 per cent of SME manufacturers reporting an increase, 23 per cent of B2C firms and just 20 per cent of B2B businesses.

“Legislation announced in the King’s Speech also has the potential to ease the problems of regulatory divergence for regulated products sold into the EU.

“Business wants to work with Government to put in place a framework that makes use of all the UK’s advantages and makes it easier to access incentives for exports.

“A focus on critical minerals supply chains and taking full advantage of the opportunities offered by digital trade would also have real value for our firms.”

Directors Behaving Badly

John Wiblin explains what happens when shareholders are not looking and directors are behaving badly.

Q Who has control: directors or shareholders?

AAs a general rule, directors have complete control of their companies. They have the last word and they do not have to get shareholders’ approval in advance of their decisions unless there is a written agreement reserving decisions about certain things to the shareholders. And then they only have to seek approval for those reserved matters.

Q Is there anything that shareholders have to have their say about first?

AThere are a few significant exceptions that apply automatically by law even if there is no agreement about it with shareholders. Directors must seek advance shareholder approval about

• Long-term service contracts

• Substantial property transactions;

• Loans, quasi-loans and credit transactions

• Payments for loss of office.

Long-term service contracts and payments for loss of office are examples of benefits that one director might give to another at the company’s expense in the expectation that they will receive similar benefits from the other directors then or at a later date.

Q Okay, but what is ‘substantial property transaction’?

AA transaction will be a substantial property transaction if it transfers a “non-cash asset” from or to any of the following:

• A director of the company

• A director of its holding company

• A person connected with a director of the company

• A person connected with a director of its holding company.

The consequences of getting this wrong can be severe. Any long-term service contract is void -– that is, the company is not bound by the agreement and, potentially, any payments made might be claimed back. And a substantial property transaction might be set aside with the directors who approved it without authority being personally obliged to indemnify the company for any loss it may have suffered.

AQAre the directors completely safe from any comebacks if shareholders have approved?

It is not enough just to ask for the shareholders’ permission. The shareholders need to have had enough information to make an informed decision. The case of Stubbins Marketing Ltd v Stubbins Food Partnerships Ltd – a case that Longmores were directly involved in –illustrates the point very well.

The shareholders gave written consent to a management buyout and other plans by the directors but the court later found that the shareholders had not given fully informed consent to the transaction. This was because they had not been given an adequate explanation of the details including how the price for all of the assets transferred had been calculated. It ordered the directors who had carried out the transactions to pay back millions of pounds, resulting in some of the directors having to declare personal bankruptcy.

Those directors had also awarded each other service contracts with very substantial payments for loss of office. When the shareholders fired the directors they claimed large sums from the company under their contracts. The shareholders had not been consulted about those contracts. The court set those agreements aside.

Keep your eye on the size of the prize to lead a successful firm

In business, you must have an edge that separates you from the competition and have an international mindset when it comes to your growth plan.

Focus on your vision of the bigger picture without losing sight of the detail of the day-to-day.

That is the key advice from Jonathan Kane, who has spent his working life in business and has grown a successful, secondgeneration family-run international firm.

Starting a business needs a lot of passion, a great idea and a lot of patience.

Kane Group, which has six subsidiary businesses including Kane International based in Hertfordshire, is run by Jonathan and his older brother Michael. While Jonathan’s focus is the UK, Michael, who lives in America, looks after the international side.

Kane International, a 60-year-old business founded by Jonathan and Michael’s father Douglas, manufactures and supplies flue gas and engine exhaust analysers and has customers in more than 40 countries around the world. It is the only UK supplier of portable analysers.

Its headquarters are in Welwyn Garden City with a second office in Atherton, Greater Manchester. It also has sites in South Korea, France, Germany, America, Canada, Mexico, China, South Africa, Romania and India.

“We have always been a test and measure business,” says Jonathan, who started working at the family firm after university and took the reins with his brother when their father died in 2000.

“Somebody fixing something should always need to test it afterwards to make sure they have done their job effectively, to ensure the equipment is working properly and to avoid the risk of death or injury.”

Kane International has 110 employees and Kane Group has 220 people across its different companies. The Kane brothers have termed their vision for the future as 30-30 – to achieve sales of £30 million by 2030.

And to achieve that vision, Jonathan says, you must have one eye on the bigger picture and one on the day-to-day detail.

“You have to look at the challenges coming down the road,” he says.

“Five years ago, we wouldn’t be talking about net zero; that’s a fundamental change to our business. As a leader, you have to be responsible and ready for it.

“I switch off with great difficulty. It’s not a job; it’s a passion. I am very lucky as I have a great family who are very supportive.”

Jonathan advises new business owners to remember there is room for everyone.

“If you have got a really good idea, then look at the size of the prize,” he says.

“There has to be an edge that separates you from what other people are doing and you should never feel that you have reached the top – whatever the top means in your mind – you must think with an international mindset. The market is substantially bigger than you think it is.

“Starting a business needs a lot of passion, a great idea and a lot of patience. Not everyone will understand your journey and you need resilience to fight through a lot of resistance. My experience is that it will take a lot longer than you think it will to be successful but that’s not a reason to not do it.”

Having the support of Hertfordshire Chamber has been invaluable.

“We joined around 30 years ago and they help us with our international sales growth and our local presence,” he says.

“The Chamber also runs workshops on manufacturing and technology, which I am particularly interested in.

“Recently, we entered the Chamber Business Awards and won Best Business and Best Customer Service. On the back of winning them, we decided to apply for a Queen’s Award, which we were awarded for Innovation for our after-sales care. Next, we’re looking at the King’s Award for Export.”

FIRE SAFETY LONDON FIRE BRIGADE TO END AUTOMATIC ALARM RESPONSE

London Fire Brigade has announced that from 1st October 2024 it will no longer respond to automatic fire alarms at most commercial properties between the times of 7am and 8:30pm. This move, in line with many Fire and Rescue services across the UK, is being implemented to limit responses to unwanted fire alarm signals, freeing up firefighters to attend genuine emergencies.

After 1st October London Fire Brigade will only attend automatic fire alarms once a fire has been confirmed, which could delay attendance and increase the risk of significant fire damage. Businesses with premises covered by the City of London Fire Brigade who have automatic fire alarms need to take action now to mitigate the increased risks to property and life.

Ahead of these changes businesses should:

1) Update Fire Risk assessments to reflect the delayed response times

2) Revise Fire Safety plans to ensure confirmed fires during business hours are reported by dialling 999

3) Upgrade Fire Detection Systems to include double knock, multi-sensing detectors, or other confirmed technology that requires multiple triggers, providing a confirmed activation

4) Develop a keyholder confirmation process to verify automatic fire detection activations outside business hours

5) Employee training on the new procedures following an automatic fire detection activation, so employees are prepared to respond safely and effectively

6) Update Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) protocols so that secondary confirmation is needed through additional detector activations or keyholder verification

Impact on insurance

Premises impacted by these changes will be considered at higher risk of fire damages, therefore may impact insurance coverage. Businesses should inform their broker as soon as possible, to ensure they stay covered for fire risks. It is also imperative that risk assessments, fire safety plans and staff training are updated, and that businesses take other appropriate steps (such as those listed above) to mitigate the increased risk of potential damages that could be caused by fires during these hours.

Exciting plans guarantee bright future for borough marking landmark anniversary

Popular with families, businesses of all sizes and filmmakers, the borough of Dacorum is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year

Fifty years on from its creation, the borough of Dacorum boasts some of the most innovative minds working in Hertfordshire.

It has nearly 8,000 companies ranging from small and micro businesses to industry giants like EUSA Pharma, RSK, CAME, CAE Technologies, Sopra Steria, Henkel, Vitabiotics, Prologis and Atlas Copco.

It is home to part of the county’s Enterprise Zone, Hertfordshire Innovation Quarter, which brings together trailblazers in agritech, smart construction, bioscience, gene technology, AI, robotics and big data and has harnessed the expertise of the likes of building sciences specialists BRE Group, agricultural pioneers Rothamsted Research and the University of Hertfordshire.

Just outside the Enterprise Zone is Hemel Hempstead’s Maylands Business Park, arguably the heart of Dacorum’s economic activity, with more than 650 businesses employing over 20,000 people. Perfectly placed on the edge of London and with easy access to the M1, M25, A41 and A1, four mainline rail stations and five airports it is the destination of choice for many companies, including global leaders in construction, logistics and technology.

It certainly impressed US foodservice giant, Sysco, which is set to create its largest European depot on Maylands. The distributor, which is the parent company of food supplier Brakes, is initially investing $100million in the 475,000 sq ft site which is due to be fully operational by 2026. Over the next decade, the site will help contribute to the creation of 850 jobs.

Speaking about the development earlier this year, Paul Nieduszynski, CEO of Sysco GB, described it as a ‘next generation site, unlike anything we’ve seen before’.

He added: “The combination of scale, cutting-edge technology, range and service will set a new standard for foodservice wholesale in the UK.”

To ensure that the area continues to remain an attractive location for business, Dacorum Borough Council is currently working with partners on the Maylands Plus masterplan, and the wider Hemel Garden Communities programme.

Hemel Garden Communities proposes a sustainable large urban expansion to Hemel Hempstead and is set to create more than 11,000 new homes and 10,000 jobs by 2050. Hemel Garden Communities and its partners say it will be home to integrated neighbourhoods, connected by a green network, which will be underpinned by digital connectivity, a self-sustaining economy and pioneering green technology. They want it to embrace the best qualities of Hemel Hempstead’s Mark One New Town heritage.

Hemel Hempstead has existed since the 8th century but expanded rapidly as one of the ‘new towns’ needed to house Londoners displaced by the Blitz during the Second World War. Today, it is the county’s largest settlement with more than 90,000 residents.

Shoppers benefit from The Marlowes and Riverside shopping centres, while Hemel Old Town has independent shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes with alfresco seating.

Meanwhile, the market towns of Tring and Berkhamsted feature national retailers and independent shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes.

Visitors to Dacorum are also spoiled for choice when it comes to its natural treasures, educational opportunities and leisure activities.

Grade 1 listed Ashridge House is set in 190 acres of parkland and is home to Hult Ashridge, Hult International Business School’s executive education programme. It has been an executive business school for 65 years.

Elsewhere, there are plans to create a new Health Campus in Hemel Hempstead to provide clinical and primary health care services for residents in Dacorum and beyond.

And there’s good news for users of the leisure centres in Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted as Everyone Active, which manages the centres for Dacorum Borough Council, is investing £410,000 to upgrade the two sites.

With so much happening in the borough it’s fitting that this year Dacorum is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Dacorum at 50 Fest takes place from 11am to 5pm on Sunday, September 29, and promises to feature a Grand Parade and a wide variety of market stalls, crafts, games and live entertainment.

1. Appoint your professional team

It is important that you and the buyer each appoint a team of experienced and trusted professional advisers immediately.

Your IFA, accountant, tax adviser and solicitor will need to be consulted on all major decisions and will need to work with the buyer’s team to meet an urgent timetable.

An expedited sale process will likely take up all of your time so you will need others to run the business in the interim.

2. Conduct a financial health check

You will need to conduct an urgent financial review of the business to identify any major issues that may need to be addressed to avoid causing concern to a buyer and potentially derailing the sale.

Also check the business ownership arrangements to ensure a smooth ownership transition.

Expect the unexpected

In an ideal scenario, planning should be started many months in advance to prepare your business for sale. Life is not that simple and it may be necessary to move much more quickly, in particular as a result of impending tax changes, health issues or legal disputes.

3. Find the right buyer

It may be that your particular situation means that you have no choice of buyer. However, if you do have a choice, examples of buyers include a trade/strategic buyer (someone who has a similar business and, by buying your business, will be able to move their business to the next stage), a financial buyer (a professional investor who is buying with a view to making a profit and may require you to continue to run the business for a period after sale) or an operational buyer (a person running an established and successful business – perhaps senior employees in your own business – who want to be their own boss and earn a decent income).

Your professional team may be able to help you to find or vet a suitable buyer.

4. Structure the right deal

Your professional team will advise you at the outset how to structure the best deal which will need to be agreed with the buyer. One question is whether to proceed by way of an asset sale or a share sale.

In an asset sale, you sell only those assets you want to sell (or the buyer wants to buy) and you are left to deal with the liabilities that are left behind.

Going down the share sale route allows you to sell your business as a whole including all assets and liabilities. There are also many different types of sale consideration, such as cash, deferred consideration, shares in the buying company and loan notes.

There are distinct tax advantages and disadvantages to these structures so it is critical that advice is taken from your team before making a final decision.

5. Understand the process

Selling your business, particularly in a short space of time, will be a very time consuming and stressful experience. It is largely a buyer-driven process and this can be managed with the support of your professional team.

Having a lead negotiator by your side from the start will help to manage relationships with the buyer and its advisers.

Hertfordshire takes the lead on quality new homes for residents

The new government has announced plans for growth that could see the reintroduction of mandatory housebuilding targets and a kickstart to stalled housing schemes. With Hertfordshire’s population expected to rise by 38,550 by 2043, new quality, affordable homes are needed and the Hertfordshire Growth Board (HGB) plan to tackle this with county-wide green developments.

From Harlow & Gilston Garden Town in the east to Hemel Garden Communities in the west, Hertfordshire is aiming to deliver 100,000 homes over the next decade and beyond.

Key housing development sites

• Harlow & Gilston Garden Town – 10,000 new homes across seven villages with 13,000 additional homes across the border in Essex, plus a new Princess Alexandra Hospital and commercial sites.

• Hemel Garden Communities – 11,000 new homes, new local centres and health and lifestyle services.

• Baldock – 3,000 new homes, two new primary schools and a secondary school, plus a new community centre and commercial spaces.

• Coopers Green, Hatfield – 2,000 new homes with commercial spaces.

• Brookfield Garden Village – 1,250 new homes

Who’s signed up?

But with reports nationwide of poor builds and inferior developments, the government’s draft National Planning Policy Framework proposes to achieve higher quality through national design coding and local design codes, as well as upgrades to building regulations .HGB is already making waves with its Development Quality Charter to ensure that developments in the county are high quality and sustainable.

Launched earlier this year, the Development Quality Charter aims to achieve a new benchmark for high quality and sustainable development in Hertfordshire.

This is because the built environment is responsible for about 25% of greenhouse gas emissions, so one of the best things we can do is improve the construction, heating, cooling, and powering of our homes and other buildings.

It is hoped that councils, council-owned development companies, housing associations, developers, landowners, and others will voluntarily sign the Charter and commit to achieving the pledges.

A pledge for positive properties

The Charter’s expectation includes a series of pledges for organisations to uphold from master planning and compliance with national design models, to long-term environmental management and exceeding minimum sustainability standards.

The Charter quotes national government policy on planning framework and design codes, which states: “Beauty is not a cost to be negotiated away: it is the benchmark that all new developments should meet, to turn a collection of buildings into a place, anywhere into somewhere and nowhere into home.” This refers to planning and architectural design as well as construction and materials, but it’s residents and communities that are at the heart of these codes of practice.

Our survey says…

The Growth Board surveyed over 4,300 residents in 2023 as part of its vision and mission engagement, when asked of their support of quality and affordable housing for all, a massive 81% responded in favour of the delivery of high quality, affordable and specialist homes, to support the county’s socio-economic prosperity.

In a 2023 survey by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), 55% thought older homes were better quality than new-builds, compared to 21% who thought new-builds were better. Almost a third (32%) described new-build housing as “poor quality”.

It also found 33% of respondents had a “low level of trust” of housebuilders building new homes to a high standard.

About 94% of new-build homeowners reported at least one defect once their property was complete, according to a 2021 poll by trade body the Home Builders Federation (HBF).

But what’s in it for me?

Councils, developers and others who sign the Charter will be formally recognised on the Growth Board and Hertfordshire Infrastructure and Development Board (HIDB) website.

Achieving the charter’s pledges will be treated as a material consideration in the determination of planning applications.

Once they are signed up, councils and developers can refer to the Charter and use the Charter Mark as part of their corporate promotional material. Developments that comply with the Charter will be automatically put forward for the Hertfordshire Building Futures Awards. There will be a distinct award for schemes that comply with the Charter.

Eleven organisations are already signed up to the Charter with Tarmac receiving recognition for its £4 million of social impact at its Hertfordshire sites, benefiting residents and communities.

We encourage all developers to sign up to the Development Quality Charter to support this. The refreshed focus on planning reform to build the quality homes that residents need is welcome, and we stand ready to work with central government to play our part in plans to power up Britain through the new national mission to ensure people’s housing and infrastructure needs are met.”

Help Shape Hertfordshire’s Economic Future

Hertfordshire Futures is developing a new Economic Strategy for the county for the next 10 years and beyond. It is placing residents and businesses at the heart of plans to build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. By Lucy Gravatt.

Over the coming months there will be myriad ways that organisations and individuals can have their say in shaping Hertfordshire’s economic future and ensure that the benefits can be more widely shared.

A series of conversations will take place across the county to understand more fully the challenges and opportunities facing all those who live, work and invest

in Hertfordshire to help build a more sustainable pathway for future growth. These will take the form of business roundtables on key topical issues, place-based discussions supported by in-depth analysis of local areas and a social media campaign to ensure the priorities are road-tested with the widest possible audience. Hertfordshire Futures will collaborate with key stakeholders such as Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce to give the business voice prominence

in setting the future economic direction for the county and put innovation, inclusion and sustainability at its core. Webinars will bring in influential speakers from outside the county to debate cross-cutting themes of national importance in discussion with local place and business leaders. These will address issues such as the future of AI/automation and pace of change; how improving health and well-being can help reduce the impact of economic

inactivity and the wider societal gains from green investment. This engagement will help inform the development of the strategy which will go out for consultation later in the year and is set to be formally adopted by Spring 2025. It will take an economy-led view on wider issues such as infrastructure and also take into account other socio-economic challenges such as pockets of deprivation in skills, work and health, lack of affordable and good quality homes for

young people and lower income households, and poor east-west transport links and connectivity.

The strategy will also give due consideration to global trends that will have a transformative effect over the next 10-20 years:

• AI/Data Economy

• Ageing population

• Climate change

Add to the mix Hertfordshire’s good schools, polycentric mix of towns and villages, accessibility to London and its rich natural landscape with chalkstreams of international importance and it’s no wonder over 1.2m people choose to call this county home.

However despite its prosperous and leafy reputation, the county has its own share of inequalities such as inadequate transport links across the county and a shortage of quality affordable housing. Failure to tackle some of these chronic pressures means Hertfordshire will become less resilient to wider economic shocks over time.

AI remains alien to majority of SMEs

The majority of SMEs are still not using artificial intelligence, despite a growing acceptance by businesses that it will help boost productivity.

Research carried out by the British Chambers of Commerce Insights Unit, in partnership with specialist recruiter Pertemps Network Group, shows:

• 43 per cent of firms have no plans to use AI technology

• 25 per cent of businesses are currently using AI

• Customer-facing businesses (B2C) are even less likely to adopt AI, with 50 per cent stating they have no plans to use this technology

• 42 per cent of companies say they believe AI will increase their productivity overall, while almost none (2 per cent) expect it to cause a decrease

Shevaun Haviland, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “AI technology is fast becoming a key part of the business landscape. It will have a huge impact on employment trends going forward.

“Our data is a stark reminder of the challenge ahead to get all firms equipped for the digital future.

“It’s encouraging to see 25 per cent of businesses are now using AI – that’s progress from our survey this time last year. But nearly half of firms still don’t have plans to use the technology.

“Without direct action by the Government to help SMEs – many firms risk being left behind. Businesses need advice and support to make the digital steps forward.

“That support on AI will also help firms feel more confident in their future skills planning. The pace of technological

change is speeding up, not slowing down. It’s vital that all businesses are given the opportunities to embrace AI.”

The BCC research found overall, 43 per cent of respondents had no plans to use AI at all, 25 per cent said they were currently using a specific AI technology, while 8 per cent were not sure if they were, and 24 per cent planned to in future.

There are significant sectoral differences. The new data shows that B2B companies are most likely to be currently using AI (33 per cent). Meanwhile, manufacturing firms are the sector least likely to be using AI technology (19 per cent) – with nearly half of manufacturers (49 per cent) also saying they have no plans to adopt the technology, while just 24 per cent intend to use it in the future.

The report also found that only 11 per cent of responding businesses feel their current training arrangements are allowing them to meet their future skills needs.

Four in ten (39 per cent) say they have seen an increase in the use of occupational health by employees.

Carmen Watson, Pertemps Network Group Chair, said: “AI has the potential to significantly benefit many industries but, as our research with the BCC shows, there is still a nervousness about its applications.

“One of the areas it can help is addressing skills shortages. Our research shows that many businesses do not feel there are measures in place to address the current shortages and ensure they have a talent pipeline for the future. Only by working together, collaborating across all sectors and disciplines, and embracing new technology, can we tackle this.

“AI will play a crucial role. It can help free up time for experienced professionals who, freed from some of the more mundane and process-driven tasks on their to-do lists, can spend time upskilling themselves and, also, mentoring those younger professionals coming through.

“It remains vital that all employers look at their offering to workers, ensuring they are able to access additional services and support, so that once you have attracted the right talent, the work environment you are offering is inclusive and supportive.”

Desert challenge is next step for ‘inspirational’ boss

An “inspirational” business owner is planning to trek the Sahara for charity after completing a marathon challenge on home shores.

Laura Pearce, Managing Director at Patron Strand PR, has signed up to walk around 80km in the unforgiving

desert environment where temperatures will top 35C to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The five-day trail in Morocco in February next year follows a 26-mile walk she completed for the same charity in August.

She said: “I speak to so many people whose families are being torn apart by dementia – it is such a cruel illness, robbing relatives of their loved ones. A small amount of discomfort for me is nothing compared with the issues these families are facing every day.

“I love a challenge, so while I can, I want to support a charity that provides incredible support for those families affected.”

Laura smashed through the £2,000 barrier for the Trek26 Suffolk Coast event, making her the sixth highest fundraiser as she crossed the line in seven hours, 48 minutes, placing her 12th out of 384 walkers.

“I am lucky I walk my dogs regularly because I didn’t have time to do any

real training for the walk. It was a very warm day and an early start – I just wanted to get to the finish line as quickly as possible.

“Tackling the Sahara will be very different and I have been taking advice from someone who has already done it so I should be well prepared. I’m not too concerned about the walking itself, or the heat. I think the lack of shower and camping will be the real challenge for me!”

She has set herself a goal of raising £3,500.

And she doesn’t plan to stop there. “I’d like to tackle a new challenge each year. I think climbing Kilimanjaro will be next on the list.”

Laura is being supported by her Strand PR team who are cheering her on from the sidelines. Editorial Manager Julie Palmer said: “Laura isn’t a fan of the limelight, but what she is doing for charity needs to be recognised. She is inspirational and we all think she is incredible.”

A royal serenade to remember late Queen

The late Queen Elizabeth will be remembered with a special concert on the anniversary of her death.

Sunday 8th September will mark two years since the King’s mother passed away. She was the longest reigning monarch in British history with dedicated service of more than 70 years,

Among her many interests was a deep appreciation of great music.

Some of Britain’s most talented young musicians from the Royal Academy of Music will deliver A Royal Serenade of vocal and chamber music at St Paul’s Walden Bury, near Hitchin. Attendees are encouraged to arrive from 3pm, take their own picnic and relax on the lawn or with their own chairs, prior to the one-hour concert at 5pm.

St Paul’s Walden Bury, said to be the birthplace of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, is a small stately home, with spectacular gardens, where Queen Elizabeth II spent much of her time as a child with other family members.

Now the home of Sir Simon and Caroline Bowes-Lyon, the grounds are a fabulous setting for this anniversary performance.

The event is also seeking to raise a donation for the St Albans Cathedral Music Trust in support of its programme to provide young people within the St Albans Diocese with an opportunity to perform at the next series of free-to-attend lunchtime concerts.

Dr Lionel C. Wallace DL, chairman of the Trust, said: “The St Albans Cathedral Music Trust short documentary Chorus, screening in November 2024, will talk about the tremendous benefit of choral music to the development of our young people and communities. As the Trust approaches its 30th anniversary, its vision is to remove financial barriers to getting people singing and performing together.”

Welcome top young talent on industry Insight Days

Organisations in Hertfordshire invited to open their doors to students looking to plan their careers

Businesses in Hertfordshire wanting to attract the brightest young talent are encouraged to collaborate with HFL Education (formerly Herts for Learning) to deliver industry Insight Days for 16- to 19-year-old students.

HFL Education has worked in collaboration with Hertfordshire County Council and the Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership to run the Industry Insight Days for Year 12 and 13 pupils from across the county.

Suki Gill, 16-19 Curriculum and Funding Adviser from HFL, said: “The industry-specific Insight Days are informative, fun and educational. We are passionate that young people in Hertfordshire have access to the professional world and the chance to discover job and career roles in a particular company or sector which can help them decide where their future career interests lie.

“These Insight Days give students meaningful employer encounters and allow them to meet industry experts who can help them understand progression routes and opportunities within specific sectors. The businesses hosting the days benefit as well, as they will be opening their doors to meet the brightest potential future employees.”

HFL Education has delivered Insight Days in a number of sectors including law, finance and engineering. A life sciences Insight Day at Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult’s newly opened skills and training laboratories in Stevenage drew enthusiastic feedback from students.

“I came today not knowing what to expect,” said one female student. “I am now seriously considering a career in life sciences, whereas before I was only thinking about it. I feel educated in the different areas and what they achieve to be able to think of this as a potential career.”

Suki added: “Feedback from previous events demonstrates how inspirational and invaluable the Insight Days have been for students whose schools had put them forward to attend based on their academic potential and personal circumstances.

“The Insight events have also enabled us to forge strong partnerships with employers so that Hertfordshire’s young people get great opportunities, and we are delighted that we are now an approved partner of CrewHQ, Warner Bros. Studios’ brand-new training centre in Leavesden.”

HFL Education is a not-for-profit company providing school improvement services to Hertfordshire and the surrounding local authorities. The organisation believes that every young person, through access to a great education, should be able to realise their potential, regardless of where they live or their circumstances.

HFL Education is inviting local businesses to join in with hosting future Insight Days which each attract between 45 to 60 students. Using its network of more than 80 secondary schools, HFL Education offers all support for the day, including programme management and making sure the day is a valuable experience for all involved. There is a rigorous application programme for students to attend. Businesses can specify the audience they want to welcome – for example, so the day meets company diversity and inclusion targets.

From Paris to Herts: Olympic medallist at wellbeing conference

An Olympic medallist is leaving the Paris poolside to share her inspirational thoughts on mental and physical wellbeing at the Chamber’s Wellbeing Conference.

Sharron Davies, who made her Games debut in 1976 and competed across three decades at the summer sporting spectacle, will be one of the keynote speakers at next month’s event.

Since bursting on to the international swimming scene as a teenager, she has dedicated her life to sport, with numerous major titles, medals and more than 200 British swimming records. She is now a popular presenter, including interviewing Team GB swimmers at the recent Olympic Games for the BBC.

She said: “I’ve been involved in elite sport for nearly 50 years and I’m very much looking forward to coming along to the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce Wellbeing Conference where I can share all my wellbeing tips – whether that’s when to go food shopping, when to go to sleep or what sort of exercise works for you.

“I’ll be sharing all the things that have worked for me to keep in a good physical state but also in a good mental state as well.”

The conference will shine a spotlight on how physical and mental health can impact economic, social and environmental wellbeing. Sharron will be diving into the link between fitness and mental health as well as unpicking confidence, goal setting and overcoming hurdles, providing attendees with unique insights from her personal experience of how crucial mindset can be when pursuing your goals.

Around 30 business leaders and nearly a dozen dogs stepped into nature’s boardroom for Hertfordshire Chamber’s latest netwalking event.

The popular event combined the benefit of networking with the joy of walking and gave professionals the opportunity to make meaningful connections while enjoying the beautiful scenery at Hatfield Park.

In the rapidly evolving world of technology, businesses need not only to innovate but also to embed themselves in the communities they serve. Richard Behan, Chief Corporate Development Officer at CAE Technology Services, embodies this philosophy.

For nearly three years, CAE Technology Services has been a Patron member of the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce, with Richard at the forefront of their engagement with the local business community. While his time is in high demand, Richard’s insights offer a glimpse into how CAE is driving both business and community growth.

CAE Technology Services, a company renowned for providing advanced IT solutions, made a strategic decision to move its headquarters to Hemel Hempstead, having previously been a local Chamber member in Watford. This move marked a significant milestone for CAE, aligning the company more closely with Hertfordshire’s vibrant business landscape.

and shifting organisational priorities, continue to be ongoing challenges in the technology sector.”

He believes that the Chamber can play a pivotal role in addressing these challenges by facilitating discussions and connections with subject matter experts within the Chamber’s network.

CAE’s approach to overcoming these obstacles is rooted in collaboration and knowledge sharing. By engaging with other Chamber members, CAE has been able to stay ahead of industry trends and find solutions that benefit the company and its clients.

Looking ahead, CAE is committed to what Richard describes as “purposeful growth”. The Chamber CEO is taking on a new challenge outside of the boardroom as she prepares to line up for the start of the 2025 London Marathon.

Sweet challenge supports charity in centenary

The Chamber team has been busy celebrating the centenary with a different challenge each month to mark the year.

After putting on their best smiles for 100 selfies at the Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards in June, July was spent selling 100 jars of honey, generously made and donated by RDT Architects. Proceeds from the sale of the honey are being donated to the Chamber’s chosen charity, Hertfordshire Community Foundation.

In August, everyone put their best foot forward at the second netwalking event to walk a collective 100,000 steps alongside their furry friends.

Chamber CEO Donna Schultz said: “The creativity of the team in coming up with a different challenge each month is incredible.

“We really wanted to make this a year to remember and together we have taken part in activities that we wouldn’t otherwise have done. Some have benefitted our own wellbeing and others have supported different charities.

“It has been great for team-building and I really appreciate everyone supporting the monthly challenges.

“We still have four months of the year to go and I am excited to see what ideas the team comes up with before the end of our centenary year.”

Hat-trick of finalists in BCC awards

Three winners from the Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards have been named as finalists in the national British Chambers of Commerce annual Business Awards.

HAB Law, Air Energy and No Floor No More were crowned at the Herts Chamber’s event in June at Tewinbury Farm Hotel. The Diversity and Inclusion winners, HAB Law, have been named in

the shortlist for the People and Work Business of the Year; Air Energy, which won Excellence in International Trade, is in the Global Britain Business of the Year category; and No Floor No More, worthy winner of the Herts Green Award, is competing for the Green Innovation trophy.

Two Herts businesses receive top food awards

in recognition of their commitment to healthier eating and sustainability.

High Leigh Conference Centre in Hoddesdon was the first business to receive a Gold award for its efforts to improve the health impact of its food through a number of actions, including removing all deep fat fryers from the site.

The venue also champions sustainability and has made significant changes to continue to reduce the impact the conference centre has on the environment.

The restaurant at Farnham House, Stevenage, one of Hertfordshire County Council’s offices, soon followed by achieving a Silver Herts Responsible Food Award. HCL, which operates the site,

promotes sustainability and has worked to reduce energy usage, ensure waste is managed sustainably and responsibly procure ingredients and cleaning products.

Significant changes have also been made to the food and drink on offer, including ensuring that 90 per cent of the cold beverage range is now either low in or free from sugar and swapping their mayonnaise to a lighter version.

HCL now plans to work with the Herts Responsible Food Team to go further and push towards the Gold award.

Two of the county’s businesses have been awarded Responsible Food Awards

No Floor No More combines sustainability with community action

No Floor No More is an initiative based in St Albans which helps people on lower incomes and those looking to buy pre-loved goods to furnish and replace the carpets in their homes.

The initiative was started over two years ago to support people moving into social housing. When social housing is re-issued, the property must be stripped bare. Properties are stripped no matter the condition of the existing flooring, leaving tenants without the bare essentials. Tenants often are unable to fund new flooring, and therefore thousands of households are living with bare floorboards or concrete.

No Floor No More looked to support tenants through this process by reusing donated furniture and carpeting to help them feel at home as quickly as possible. To date they have supported over 1000 families move into their new homes and have now widened their target audience to include other people on lower incomes.

This vital work has been recognised with several awards, including the Green Award in the Chamber of Commerce Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards 2024.

Recognising sustainable practice

At Hertfordshire County Council, we have supported the great work of No Floor No More through £3,205 in match funding as part of our Sustainable Hertfordshire Fund.

The fund, which is now closed, supported local initiatives that help deliver our sustainability ambitions. We especially looked to support initiatives that had additional positive benefits for Hertfordshire communities.

No Floor No More ticked these boxes on both counts. The focus on reusing flooring and furnishings helps reduce the amount of useable goods entering the waste system, supporting our Sustainable Hertfordshire ambition to send nothing to landfill by 2030.

Step out in Herts to raise charity cash

A Hertfordshire charity is supporting a campaign to help babies receive the best start in life through its Great Big Walk.

Helping Herts, the official charity of Stort Valley Rotary Club, is organising the 13-mile walk through the county’s beautiful countryside on 28th September. Funds raised will support the work of 12 charities across Hertfordshire, each one helping to improve the lives of children and young people.

Participants can choose from 12 scenic loops around Hertfordshire, each representing a different charity, fostering

community spirit and significant support for these essential organisations.

One of those charities is the For Baby’s Sake Trust, which has announced the launch of the Baby Steps campaign, an initiative designed to raise funds and awareness to break cycles of domestic abuse and give babies the best start in life.

Lauren Seager Smith, CEO of the Trust, emphasised the importance of community involvement: “We are incredibly proud to be part of the Great Big Walk for Herts 2024. Our Baby Steps campaign is about more than just raising funds; it’s about coming together as a community to support families and give babies the best possible start in life.

“Every step we take and every donation we receive helps break the cycle of domestic abuse and builds a brighter future for the next generation.”

Hertfordshire residents can support the Baby Steps campaign in various ways. They can join the For Baby’s Sake Trust team for the 13-mile walk. Or those unable to participate in the walk can still make a significant impact by donating to support the walkers, with all donations match-funded by Helping Herts, doubling the contribution.

Additionally, supporters are encouraged to walk a mile a day with a baby or child throughout September, engaging parents, carers, grandparents and early years practitioners in the initiative. Sharing pictures and videos of babies’ first steps or milestones on social media is also encouraged to help promote the cause and spread joy.

Accountants ranked in top 50 apprenticeship employers

A Hoddesdon accountants is celebrating after being awarded 26th place in the Top 50 SME Apprenticeship Employers for 2024.

HB Accountants, where apprentices make up 40 per cent of the workforce, joins more than 1,500 apprenticeship employers from diverse industries and business sectors that have entered these rankings.

The Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers and Top 50 SME Apprenticeship Employers awards showcase organisations that have made the most impact in providing apprenticeship opportunities over the past 12 months.

HB Accountants is in discussions with Gareth Dace from Hertfordshire Futures, and Claire Bayless, Love Hoddesdon BID Manager, to implement a programme where local college/6th form students can rotate through five different businesses in a single week (or over the course of five weeks, one day per week at each business).

Olympic success for Cheshunt nutrition specialist

Team GB athletes were supported in their gold-medal efforts in Paris by nutritional drinks and snacks supplied by a Cheshunt company.

VOW Nutrition was the first ever official nutrition supplier for a British Games team.

Founded in 2019 by Simon Stevens, VOW Nutrition has distribution contracts with more than 2,500 UK stores, including a deal with the largest retailer in Ireland, as well as overseas contracts which include two major supermarkets in Dubai.

Simon said: “We were immensely proud to collaborate with Team GB and enjoyed seeing our athletes’ success at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”

VOW Nutrition’s brand ambassador Matt Richards, who won gold at the Games for the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay and silver in the men’s 200m freestyle final, was one of many athletes to make the company’s products their preferred choice.

Currently powered by a team of three, VOW Nutrition has plans to move manufacturing to a nearby site in Broxbourne to centralise production,

increase supply and hit sustainability goals, while also opening doors for other companies, bringing further opportunities into the Borough.

The business was one of the first to occupy Theobalds Enterprise Centre (TEC) following its opening in late 2023.

Simon added: “We love being based at Theobalds Enterprise Centre, with views from our office across to the White Water Centre which featured in the London 2012 Olympics. We are excited to see our company grow across the world in time for the next Games in 2028.”

Five Green Flags flying high in Borough

Five of Broxbourne Borough’s parks have retained their status as awardwinning green spaces this year, by flying the Green Flag.

Barclay Park, Cedars Park, Cheshunt Park, Old Highway Recreation Ground and Top Field and Cozens Grove Local Nature Reserve have all been awarded the Green Flag by Keep Britain Tidy, the organisation that oversees the national Green Flag award programme, recognising the best parks and green spaces nationwide.

RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY AND RESTRICTIVE COVENANTS

What are they and how do they affect your property?

Restrictive covenants are legal provisions which limit or forbid certain actions on a property, for the benefit of another’s property. They are ‘negative’ in nature and are created by landowners and incorporated into the “deeds” (also known as title documents). If the title to a property is registered at the Land Registry, the Title Register will refer to any covenants affecting the property, and they will be brought to your attention by your Conveyancer during the purchase transaction. You might expect to find restrictive clauses in the title documents for leasehold properties, where a landlord owns the freehold interest. However, many freehold properties across England and Wales are subject to restrictive covenants, and whilst many restrictive covenants originate from deeds that are decades old, it is important to note that most of these covenants run with the land indefinitely, and not individual owners.

What is the purpose of these covenants?

Restrictive covenants vary in nature and purpose, but are typically imposed to prevent alterations (for the purpose of uniformity), or to prohibit unwanted behaviour that may become a nuisance to neighbouring properties.

Some of the most common examples affecting residential properties are listed below:-

Ø Use of the property restricted to a private dwellinghouse occupied by a single family

Ø Prohibition of running a business from the property

Ø Prohibition of erecting a shed or greenhouse

Ø Prohibition of parking motorhomes or commercial vehicles

Non-compliance with restrictive covenants

If breach of covenant occurs, you may be forced to pay damages or face other legal action. If there has been a continuous breach lasting over 12 months or more, you may be able to obtain insurance for breach of restrictive covenants to protect you and future owners against any enforcement action (which could be very costly).

There are complex rules relating to the passing of the ‘benefit’ and ‘burden’ of restrictive covenants: you should take legal advice on the enforceability of such covenants in the event of a breach.

Will they affect my ability to resell the property?

Watford Borough Council has announced four new businesses have moved in to the recently redeveloped Inspire at Watford Business Park.

The modern business hub, which is located near Faraday Close, has quickly become a magnet for thriving enterprises after it was transformed earlier this year.

It is now helping to attract businesses from Hertfordshire’s high-value sectors such as film and TV, life sciences and manufacturing, with Greggs, D Tiles, National Lock and Safe and Funky Elephant the latest to arrive.

The improvements to the site were made possible with council funding and £5 million via the Local Growth Fund investment from Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). It now features 13 high-quality industrial/ warehouse units and a café, all designed with sustainability in mind, and has transformed the 4.3-acre site that was previously a car park with surrounding buildings.

Each unit is equipped with solar panels, electric vehicle charging points, and ample cycle storage facilities. The buildings maximise natural light and ventilation, contributing to lower energy consumption and a projected BREEAM ‘Very Good’ sustainability rating.

The site also includes a new sustainable urban drainage system and pond, native wildflower planting and numerous newly planted trees, enhancing the industrial setting and supporting biodiversity.

Businesses are being urged to back a Hatfield initiative that has made more than £125,000 of community donations.

More than 10 years after its launch, ARISE Hatfield is continuing to make difference in the community it serves.

An alliance of three business partners – The Galleria, Gascoyne Estates (Hatfield Park) and OCS – came together to create an initiative that embodies community spirit and corporate responsibility.

By providing funding to local projects, ARISE Hatfield has become a cornerstone of support for schemes that enrich Hatfield’s residents.

As the initiative grows, more local businesses are needed to join as partners. This call to action offers companies a chance to give back and be part of a collective effort to uplift Hatfield.

By committing an amount up to £5,000 annually, companies can ensure their contributions reach those most in need through a respected channel.

Skaters, sports enthusiasts, families, local councillors and Broxbourne’s MP came together at Waltham Cross Playing Fields to celebrate the completion of the park’s upgrade and refurbishment of its sports pavilion.

Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust has launched a £280,000 fundraising campaign in its 60th year to help wildlife in crisis as rising costs threaten nature’s recovery.

The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world and, last year, the State of Nature report found that nearly one in six species in Great Britain is threatened with extinction.

Chloë Edwards, Director of Nature Recovery at Herts and Middlesex Trust, said: “We have the solutions and skills to reverse the devastating declines we are seeing and to restore nature. Our conservation projects join up fragmented habitats and bring species back to restore nature-rich, resilient habitats and our back catalogue of partnership projects has resulted in significant wins for our natural world.

The park’s new cutting-edge outdoor DJ booth, featuring its own music library and wireless connectivity to allow users to stream personalised playlists from their mobile devices, was a hit on the day.

The exclusive interactive equipment not only makes Waltham Cross Playing Fields the most innovative park in the borough, but also one to be envied far beyond Broxbourne’s boundaries.

A new state-of-the-art outdoor gym has added to the park’s diversity, with many visitors admiring its solar-powered features, mobile device connectivity to adjust workout settings and access equipment-specific video instructions, as well as the ability to charge a mobile device while working out.

The Sports Pavilion at Waltham Cross Playing Fields was also officially opened to the public having undergone refurbishment to modernise the facilities, making them fully accessible, with spacious meeting rooms, a newly equipped kitchen, toilets and showers. The pavilion will primarily serve to accommodate sports teams and community meetings.

“However, in addition to being midway through the most pivotal decade of our lives in the nature and climate crises, we are facing a financial crisis too, with escalating essential costs limiting our ability to act. Investment is needed now, and more than ever.

Some of our once common species are at risk; for example, numbers of brown hares

are thought to have declined by more than 80 per cent in the past 100 years. Turtle doves – those icons of Christmas song –have seen their numbers plummet by 99 per cent since the 1960s. Common toads have declined by 68 per cent over the past 30 years, and since 1970, flowering plant species have decreased by 54 per cent, along with 18 per cent of pollinators.

The Trust is the leading voice for conservation in the area, with more than 23,500 members and over 1,100 active volunteers supporting its work.

Herts Go Green and Grow records eventful summer of volunteering

The Chamber’s Herts Go Green and Grow initiative has participated in a summer full of impactful activities, focusing on giving back to the community through various volunteer efforts.

Launched in 2022 by the Chamber in collaboration with JPA Workspaces, KGK Genix, Estu Global, Net Zero International and Insight MCL, this initiative aims to support businesses in their transition to net zero. This summer, however, the focus has been on harnessing the power of volunteering to make a tangible difference in the local community.

One of the standout events was the Schools Food and Farming Day, which brought together 25 schools from across the county to learn about the origins of their food. This educational event saw a strong turnout from the Chamber’s members, who volunteered to support the day’s activities.

Among them were Abby Fisher from Insight MCL and a team from Sunset Studios, who played a crucial role in ensuring the event’s success. The event not only educated the children about agriculture but also provided an engaging experience for the volunteers.

Sarah Moreland MBE, MA, Executive Director of the Hertfordshire Agricultural Society, said: “Volunteers are the heart and soul of our Schools Food and Farming Day. Their dedication and passion for supporting the education of the next generation about the importance of agriculture and where their food comes from makes all the difference.

“The volunteers’ invaluable support helped us create a memorable and inspiring experience for all the children and their teachers. I think the volunteers found it educational while getting their steps in too!”

Another significant effort came from Goods for Good, a charity celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The Chamber’s team joined in the charity’s celebrations by packing 100 boxes of essential items, demonstrating how collective effort can drive meaningful change.

VolMatch, a Hertfordshire-based CIC, has also been instrumental in connecting local people with short-term volunteering opportunities that fit their schedules. This service is particularly valuable for those who want to contribute to their communities but have limited time.

Jim Tatchell from VolMatch said: “From informal conversation with local employers, we’re finding that the take-up of volunteer days offered to staff stands at only about 30 per cent.

“VolMatch works well for those with only a short amount of time to share, providing totally flexible opportunities and full data and metrics of your employee engagement.”

Additionally, KGK Genix’s Managing Director, Graham Pitts, volunteered for The Muscle Help Foundation Charity Day at Porsche Silverstone.

The Muscle Help Foundation is dedicated to providing transformative experiences for children and young people with muscular dystrophy.

Graham said: “At KGK, we are proud to support our employees by offering an additional paid day off for volunteering. This initiative encourages staff to contribute to causes they are passionate about, fostering a culture of compassion and community engagement within the company.”

Contracts from government out of reach for many SMEs

Only 20 per cent of direct public sector procurement spend was allocated to SMEs in 2023, according to the latest report from the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) and data provider Tussell.

The SME Procurement Tracker report highlights the ongoing struggle for small and medium-sized enterprises to secure a fair share of government contracts.

Now in its second year, the tracker is regarded as the benchmark for measuring government support to SMEs through public sector contracts. It shows that while the absolute spending with SMEs increased over the past six years, the proportion remained stagnant at one-fifth of the total expenditure, the same as in 2023 and only a slight improvement from 18 per cent in 2018.

The total value of reported procurement expenditure by the UK government in 2023 stood at £194.8 billion. Local government emerged as the most supportive of SMEs, spending £24.1 billion directly with them, which accounted for 34 per cent of their total procurement spend. This is a stark contrast to the overall 20 per cent average across the wider public sector, which includes central government.

Sector-wise, the health and social care sector led the way, with £11.9 billion (34 per cent of its total public spend) going to SMEs, up from 29 per cent in 2018. In the education, training and recruitment sector, £4 billion was spent with SMEs. Within central government, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport allocated 29 per cent of its procurement

budget to SMEs, totalling £256 million, while the Department for Education spent the highest absolute amount at £2 billion, representing 25 per cent of its procurement spend.

BCC Policy Manager Jonny Haseldine said: “While it’s welcome that the value of SME procurement contracts is increasing, government deals remain out of reach for too many businesses.

Jonny also pointed to the upcoming Procurement Act, set to come into force at the end of October, as a potential catalyst for change.

He added: “The Procurement Act has the potential to make the system simpler and more transparent for businesses. In addition, it’s crucial we hear more from the new government on their pledge to give SMEs greater access to contracts. Businesses up and down the country want to see a reformed process in which they can properly compete.”

Tussell Founder Gus Tugendhat echoed these sentiments, emphasising the importance of the SME Procurement Tracker: “We’re delighted to partner with the British Chambers of Commerce to produce the market’s reference statistics on how much the government purchases directly from small businesses.

“We hope our findings will help policymakers across all parts of government to support local communities by reducing the official obstacles to awarding public contracts to small businesses.”

Helping hand for Home-Start Herts

Solicitors leave their desks to spend days supporting county charity with a spot of decorating

Volunteers from a solicitors’ practice picked up paintbrushes to give a charity premises a fresh look.

The team at Taylor Walton Solicitors gave a helping hand to Home-Start Hertfordshire and over three days, they deep cleaned, painted and helped reorganise the Stevenage office.

Twenty-five people from across the firm’s three offices in St Albans, Harpenden and Luton each spent half a day out of the office to help paint, tidy and reorganise the charity’s office.

Home-Start is Taylor Walton’s chosen charity for the 24/25 financial year and the firm offers all staff the opportunity to volunteer for a half day per annum.

Emily Waddell, Head of Marketing at Taylor Walton, said: “It was a pleasure to coordinate this project – well done and thank you to everyone who was involved. It was a big project to take on over three days, with several rooms needing a makeover, including the kitchen, meeting room, office spaces, hallway, storage area and loos.

“This has already made a big difference to the charity and will allow them to focus on their core work of helping families across Hertfordshire.”

The teams set to work in each area which were cleaned and tidied first before being painted. All cupboards were reorganised to use their storage space more effectively.

New furniture was provided by JPA Workspaces and paint by Brewers Decorators in St Albans. The team also arranged for wall decorations to be printed of the charity’s values by MacPro Design and Print.

Colourful landscape pictures provided by Taylor Walton staff were also printed for frames to go on to some of the walls. The project recycled and reused as much as possible to be more sustainable. The result is a fresh and inviting office space.

Not all the team at Taylor Walton were able to volunteer over the three days, so in addition three bake sales were held which helped raise money to buy extras such as the picture frames and plants with the remainder donated to the charity.

Home-Start Hertfordshire was set up in 1983 and believes every child deserves a happy and secure childhood and that every parent should have the support they need to give their children the best start in life. It achieves this by providing families struggling with post-natal depression, isolation, physical health problems, bereavement and many other issues the support of a volunteer family mentor who will spend around two hours a week in a family’s home.

Through practical and emotional support, they make sure parents have the skills, confidence and strength they need to nurture their children.

Suzy Moody, Home-Start Hertfordshire’s CEO, said: We were delighted to be Taylor Walton’s chosen charity for the year. Right from the start, they were raring to go, with a schedule of fundraising activities and events already planned.

“When we mentioned the refurb, Emily jumped at the idea and gathered a team together to take on the challenge. The outcome far exceeded our expectations and staff have loved the new fresh look, and the personal touches showed how much they cared.”

Tell us about your time at the Chamber.

I have seen many changes during my time at the Chamber. The biggest are to do with technology and the way business communicates. I’m glad to see some things go … like fax and telex machines! (remember them?), and happy to see some of the innovation – electronic documentation for example. I’ve worked in international trade for more than 30 years and I enjoy being Internal Export Manager here at the Chamber. All in all, I have a happy time here.

What has been your proudest moment?

I can’t single out any one thing but I am proud to work for Hertfordshire Chamber and be able to help our members with support for their export challenges.

Do you have a favourite event?

In my role, I don’t attend many events; however, the Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards has to be the best event we do. It is always such a fantastic night.

When you are away from the office, what do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy gardening and time spent with my dogs. I also love live theatre and the delights of a cinema screening.

If you could have a dinner party with three guests, living or dead, who would you invite?

No one, I don’t do dinner parties! But I suppose if I had to make a choice, I’d invite St Hildegard of Bingen, Germany. I know she’s a bit obscure. She was born in 1098 and was a Benedictine abbess polymath. She composed A Feather on the Breath of God – good for yoga and meditation. I’d also ask Noel Coward and Douglas Adams.

Tell us about the best holiday you’ve ever had.

I’d go back to a childhood beach holiday to Swanage, Dorset. Sunshine that didn’t seem to burn, the sea not so cold and enormous ice-creams. And, finally, tell us something people may not know about you.

I’m a Hatfield girl, it’s definitely my home-town. I’ve lived here all my life (well, so far anyway!)

Zoo opens state-of-the-art gibbon habitat

Three critically endangered Northern white-cheeked gibbons have settled into their new home, officially opened to mark the 40th anniversary of Hertfordshire Zoo.

MP for Broxbourne Lewis Cocking cut the ribbon to the new Song of the Forest habitat, an immersive jungle environment where Ethan, Newt and Ripley are now living.

A year in the making, Hertfordshire Zoo now proudly has one of the largest gibbon habitats in the UK, featuring a 6m tall structure designed to emulate the rainforest canopy. It offers numerous high points for the gibbons to explore, dense planting and a mixed-species environment that includes underwater viewing areas for various fish, including golden rudd. The habitat also includes a living floor,

replicating their natural environment, providing essential enrichment for the gibbons.

The zoo is keen to highlight its commitment to sustainability, as this million-pound habitat is a first of its kind in the UK to feature an insulated gibbon house, an energy-saving lighting system and a self-sustaining pool for water preservation.

The zoo is also home to the oldest Northern white-cheeked gibbon in captivity as Newt recently celebrated her 50th birthday.

Lewis said: “I am proud to support conservation and the education about wildlife at Hertfordshire Zoo.”

Zoo Director and BBC wildlife children’s presenter Tyler Whitnall said: “The opening of the Gibbons: Song of the Forest habitat is a milestone for Hertfordshire Zoo, reflecting our dedication to advancing animal care and creating innovative, engaging habitats. This state-of-the-art habitat not only enhances the wellbeing of our gibbons but also sets a new benchmark for how zoos can connect visitors and share the wonder of wildlife.”

Unfortunately, gibbons are one of the most endangered species of ape and are critically endangered on the IUCN Red list. One of the primary reasons for the

widespread endangerment of the gibbon species is due to habitat loss, often a result of forest destruction and fragmentation as well as illegal hunting. The zoo has partnered with Association Anoulak that supports conservation efforts in the wild in Vietnam and Southern China. Their work is fundamental in conserving this species in the wild for generations to come.

The new space has a strong emphasis on conservation and education and provides new homes for other endangered species, including the Chinese crocodile lizards and black-breasted leaf turtles, which the zoo aims to raise more awareness on.

Don’t let your food leave a bad taste

Whether hosting an event for colleagues or clients, there’s lots to consider when choosing the venue, especially if you’re hoping to find one that meets your own exacting sustainability standards.

With a recent survey revealing 90 per cent of UK professionals believe greenwash is prevalent across all sectors, the task becomes even more challenging. Some restaurants really do walk the walk as well as talking the talk – it’s just knowing how to spot them so that when you and your guests finish your meal, you’re not left with a bad taste in the mouth.

Here are some tips from Lussmanns for identifying the restaurants where the food does good as well as tasting great. Your greenwash detector should be sounding as soon as you see expressions like ‘farm-fresh’, ‘all-natural’ and ‘responsibly-sourced’ on a restaurant’s

website or menu. These terms are meaningless. Instead, you should be looking for substantive expressions, like Soil Association organic, Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance-certified coffee and tea and seafood that’s certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council. All four of these are globally recognised and respected bodies that operate rigorous standards.

In fact, there’s another international sustainability standard that should provide any business host with total piece of mind when entertaining, the Food Made Good Standard. This certification, created and operated by the Sustainable Restaurant Association, assesses restaurants and indeed any commercial food-service operator, across all aspects of their operation – from the food they source, through their energy use and includes their people policies too.

Even if you might not think of taking home leftovers from a business dinner, knowing that a restaurant is happy to offer that service is a good indicator of how seriously they value food and how determined they are not to waste it.

Valuing their people is another important attribute of a sustainable restaurant. Spotting it in advance of a visit isn’t straightforward. One good clue is how they communicate their tipping policy. Look for wording along the lines of: “A discretionary 12.5 per cent gratuity will be added to your bill – 100 per cent of this goes to our staff.” A happy, well remunerated and valued workforce is not only a good indicator of a restaurant that’s operating with care across the board, but also of the kind of venue where you and your guests will enjoy a meal that won’t cost the earth.

The keys for the five-floor building, which will house the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science and transform learning, teaching and research in STEM fields, were officially handed over to the University in July from lead contractor Morgan Sindall Construction.

Spectra will be the largest single structure on campus and will be a hub for innovation,

research and enterprise. Its cutting-edge facilities and equipment will expand Herts’ range of study and research options and increase its capacity for high quality, realworld research impact.

Now the University has taken control of the building, it will complete the internal fit-out, with IT, audio-visual, furniture and specialist equipment, before the building opens its doors to staff and students.

The University of Hertfordshire’s next on-campus, Part-Time Jobs Fair takes place on 26 September, and its next Graduate and Placement Jobs Fair on 9 October.

Beyond Herts, Spectra will benefit the local community, become a catalyst for regional growth by providing specialist services to regional businesses and fill crucial skills gaps in STEM industries nationwide.

New facilities within the building will mirror the working environments in students’ future careers. They include modelling, simulation and research labs, flight simulators, an automotive workshop complete with electric vehicle facility, a wind tunnel, welding bay and controls testing suite. Students will have access to state-of-the-art cyber security laboratories while the upper floors will provide space for workshops, research and computer science, as well as social and meeting spaces to collaborate and socialise.

Herts degree apprenticeship programmes will also all be taught in this state-ofthe-art facility, including Electrical & Manufacturing Engineer alongside Digital and Technology Solutions (Cyber Security & Software).

The University of Hertfordshire has also launched two brand new degree

apprenticeships in Data Science and Civil Engineering to support the skills and workforce planning of local and regional employers, which will be taught in Spectra, alongside the current offering.

The University work in partnership with over 250 private and public sector employers to enable organisations to equip their people with the expertise and skills they need to succeed in today’s fast-paced workplaces, and the new facility will be an exciting place for these subject offerings to be taught in.

Spectra will champion and improve diversity in the UK’s STEM industry, alongside a range of initiatives at the University to inspire people from minority groups to pursue STEM subjects.

Super support helps Susan grow her business

Growth Hub provides speaking expert with the direction to take her business to the next level

Growing a successful business may be a natural step, but often the challenges come from not knowing the ‘how’.

Welwyn-based Superstar Communicator is run by award-winning business owner Susan Heaton-Wright, an international communications expert who helps people speak and present with more confidence. She typically delivers training to large organisations, but also works with individuals wanting to get better at pitching, running meetings or standing out for promotion.

After her son left home for university in 2018, Susan realised she had more time to devote to growing her business. Working alone and unsure of her next step, she contacted Hertfordshire Growth Hub, which initially provided her with five free sessions of advice and support.

Superstar Communicator was originally the name of Susan’s methodology and podcast, but following conversations with the Growth Hub that challenged her to view her business from a different perspective, Susan decided to make it her company brand name, too.

The Growth Hub introduced Susan to specialist legal advice for trademarking the new name and then started by helping Susan rationalise her products and services. In particular, it helped her concentrate on promoting the more profitable aspects of her business and less on the free or low revenuegenerating services. She was offered guidance as she created a new website to reflect her new brand and offer.

Later, during the early months of the Covid pandemic in 2020, the Growth Hub enabled Susan to access a free one-to-one mentor – an experienced businessperson who helped her refocus her business, create tangible goals and navigate new challenges. Two years later, the Growth Hub worked with Susan to review progress, identify opportunities and set new goals.

One of the priorities that came out of this was marketing and Susan was given help to access advice and grant funding through Herts Camera Action, a programme aimed at supporting creative businesses. Susan was awarded over £2,500 to invest in expert marketing support from a specialist consultancy.

More recently, the Growth Hub introduced Susan to the Create Growth Programme, delivered on behalf of Hertfordshire Futures.

The programme aims to increase management skills and confidence among businesses with high growth potential that are operating in Hertfordshire’s film and TV sector or its supply chain or that are looking to diversify into the sector. The programme, which runs until the end of March 2025, also supports businesses to become investment ready and develop new products or services.

The sector was one Susan hadn’t considered before. But with part of the programme focusing on supply chain innovation, Susan found herself with the opportunity to pitch a new product idea to Sky Studios. After completing the course, she took advantage of

specialist support from the University of Hertfordshire, again as part of the programme, to develop her service offering further.

Over several years, Hertfordshire Growth Hub has built a strong relationship with Susan, who has been able to dip into the support as and when she needed it. She has been given the advice and confidence to rebrand her business, position her products and keep focused on drivers for growth.

Through access to grants, she’s been able to formulate a clear marketing plan and promote her services, and she’s now developing an exciting and potentially groundbreaking product for the film industry – something she says she would never have imagined doing before.

Susan says: “I’m really grateful to the Growth Hub for believing in and supporting me – I’ve acted on all the advice I’ve been given. At every stage, the support has been invaluable. When you’re on your own, it’s so helpful to have experts that can act as sounding boards and keep you on the right path.”

In the 16 years that I have worked for Sika, we have grown from a £50 million to a £320 million turnover company with several key acquisitions. Our head office remains in Welwyn Garden City and, like the Herts Chamber of Commerce, we are closing in on our centenary year in Welwyn Garden City. We felt that it was time to celebrate our contribution to Hertfordshire’s economy and to ensure we were supporting it for many years to come through the Chamber.

has it helped your business network?

We are still relatively new and as such finding our feet regarding how we can further contribute to the economic health of Hertfordshire. Having said that, we see other members within our industry so are looking to see how we can work together to support the overall construction industry.

advice would you give someone starting out?

Always develop a mid- to long-term plan to set a course, don’t be afraid to flex if the environment changes and always have a Plan B.

What do you think is the biggest challenge affecting running and growing a business?

I think the biggest challenge is also the biggest opportunity and it relates to the use of technology. The development of different technologies can outgrow the available skills in the workforce. I therefore believe that this shouldn’t be overlooked as part of the strategic planning process.

What support do you want from government?

Being a commercial operation, a growing economy that fosters innovation, the development of skilled people and the adoption of sustainable alternatives would be at the top of our list.

How confident are you your business will grow in the next year?

Confident around those things we can control – we are very fortunate to have extremely engaged, hardworking and professional teams across our business. We are also a main manufacturer and supplier of products that are exported to our sister companies in 105 countries around the world, which opens many opportunities for us. We will continue to support the big infrastructure projects such as HS2 and Hinckley Point Power station. We will see more wind farms being built which use our materials and we hope to see a general growth in the residential construction market. Our broad portfolio of products and markets that we serve means we are well placed to adapt to a changing market.
