RABBI’S MESSAGE
Dear Friends,
If not now, when??
I am writing to encourage you to join me on a trip to Israel in May. One of the things that we have learned over these past (almost!) three years is to say ‘yes’ when deeply meaningful opportunities present themselves.
This trip to Israel promises to be a memorable and extremely enriching experience for all of us.
I have designed a trip that will be exciting, intellectually challenging, delicious, and spiritually enriching. If you have spent time in Israel on a first-timer trip or spent some time there with friends or family, this trip is for you! We will explore what it means to be a Zionist in this moment and discover some of the organizations dedicated to a new Zionism that meets the challenges of the 21st century. While most American Jews continue to locate their Zionism in the slogans and ideologies of the late 1800s and 1900s, Israelis are living in a very different reality than our great ideologues envisioned. This trip will help people better understand the achievements of Zionism and wrestle with its challenges.
And of course, we will immerse ourselves in the culinary delights of Israel, which is experiencing a renaissance in all things food related.
Here are some highlights:
Visit Sderot and Kibbutz Nir Or, both of which are on the Gaza border. We will learn about the day to day experience of living on that border and some of the ways that Israelis are adapting to its challenges.
Visit Rahat, Israel’s largest Bedouin city and meet with Jamal Alkirnari, founder of New Dawn in the Negev, a BedouinJewish co-existence NGO.
Visit a Jewish settlement being built by secular and religious Israeli Jews in the West Bank / Judea Samaria to learn about their ideologies and day to day lives.
Learn about achievements and challenges in building a shared Palestinian and Jewish society in Israel by visiting an Israeli Arab village with Muhammed Darawshe, director of the Givat Haviva Center for Shared Society.
Visit Maoz in Lod for a special program to explore the integration of Haredim in Israeli society. We will also meet with Palestinians and Jews who live in Lod to hear about living in a mixed community.
We. Will. Eat. Here is what awaits: culinary delights in Mahane Yehuda, Ein Karem, Halbrecht Farm, Tulip Winery, and more!
Through Encounter, we will spend a day in Palestinian villages and cities in the West Bank / Judea Samaria to meet with Palestinians to learn about their views, communities, and their day to day lives.
Of course, we will also share a Shabbat in Jerusalem which will lift our spirits and inspire us. We will fall deeper in love with our homeland while learning about the challenges Israel faces in 2023 and meet some of the people working to address them systematically.
We will have a wonderful time together. That’s a promise! For more information on the itinerary and cost, visit here: bethelnr.org/MakorIsraelTripMay
If the cost of the trip is the only thing standing in your way of joining us, please let me know. I do not want anyone to miss this for financial reasons!
Sign-up is open and will close soon. Please email or call me at dschuck@bethelnr.org or (914) 235-2700 ext. 230 with any questions. I can’t wait to be together with you in Israel!!!

DO YOU HAVE A SIMCHA COMING UP?
Are you celebrating a birthday or other milestone? Do you just love spending time with your community after Shabbat services? Sponsoring a kiddush on Shabbat is a wonderful way to share your special day with your Beth El community. To learn more about the details of sponsoring a kiddush and to help you make a choice that is right for you and your family please reach out to Alise Liquorie at aliquorie@bethelnr.org or (914) 235-2700 x223.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Over the many years that Beth El has been part of my life (nearly fifty!), I have seen clergy come and go, a major renovation to our sanctuary, changes in the way we daven (pray), and many other phenomena that are the normal and healthy part of a synagogue’s evolution. However, throughout all of those years two things have remained constant. The first is the centrality of our Shabbat kiddush lunch to the knitting of Beth El’s social fabric. After the hustle and bustle of another week in our all-too-hectic lives, there is nothing more grounding than sitting at a table catching up with people, whether it is those we see regularly outside Beth El’s walls, or people who we see only in shul. To me, frankly, this is what Shabbat is all about: forgetting the stresses of life, slowing down, and focusing on the things that really matter. As President, kiddush lunch is a great venue for fielding praise and adulation (not complaints, because those are not allowed to be voiced on Shabbat; Rabbi Schuck told me this rule can be found in the Talmud!). Further, kiddush is an ideal place to welcome new members into our community and to offer a source of connection and belonging to people who might be lonely or are experiencing suffering in their lives.
The second quality that Beth El has always had regardless of the era is the way that members of our community are truly happy to celebrate major (and sometimes less significant) events and milestones in each other’s lives. Whether it is a dear friend or someone we really don’t know, everyone is always thrilled to offer a “Mazal Tov” or “Yashar Koach” to someone celebrating a simcha or happy occasion.
One meaningful way to share these joyful events with the larger community is to sponsor the kiddush, thus extending the celebration outside of the sanctuary and making it a truly synagogue-wide event. Families celebrating b’nei mitzvah have sponsored the kiddush lunch on the Shabbat of their simcha for as long as I can remember. However, sponsorship of a kiddush is not limited to bar and bat mitzvahs. In fact, a congregant can sponsor a kiddush for any reason, or for no reason at all! For example, I decided to celebrate my 50th birthday at Beth El by chanting the Haftarah and then having a kiddush for the community. When my parents marked their 50th wedding anniversary, my brother and I sponsored the kiddush and invited many of their friends from outside the community to celebrate. Baby namings, aufrufs, b’nei mitzvah anniversaries, graduations, birthdays, retirements - these are
all occasions which you may want to mark with a sponsored kiddush. Friends can come together to sponsor a kiddush for a shared occasion, such as celebrating a joint trip to Israel or the high school graduating class. Just recently a group of parents whose children participated in Youth Shabbat co-sponsored the kiddush.
Finally, there are many possibilities for the type of kiddush you could present. You could of course offer the “basics” (who doesn’t love tuna and a challah roll?) or an enhanced menu prepared by our in-house team. Or you could arrange for any Kosher caterer to prepare an extravagant spread of your choosing, as long as the caterer is pre-approved by our rabbis. Reach out to Alise Liquorie in the front office, and she will explain all the options.
Kiddush lunch at Beth El is in our DNA and from a community-building perspective is probably one of the most important things we do. By sponsoring a kiddush you can perpetuate this wonderful tradition. I look forward to celebrating with you and the rest of the community at your next special occasion!
Keruv Korner
In honor of Jewish Disabilities Awareness, Acceptance, and Inclusion Month (JDAIM) in February, the Keruv Committee asked Beth El member Naomi FioRito to share her personal experience as mother of a child with special needs. Her daughter Paige is diagnosed as having a genetic anomaly in the CTNAP2 gene. She has a seizure disorder and global cognitive and physical delays, and she requires maximum assistance with life’s basic tasks. Below, Naomi describes several organizations that have provided fun and meaningful experiences for her daughter and additional support to their entire family.
As my brain considers which tools to pull out of my arsenal, my body temperature starts to rise. A calm and completely unfazed demeanor must prevail because one scent of anxiety and I’m dead in the water. As I pull the car into a parking spot in front of Beth El, I wonder how difficult it’s going to be to get my 16-year-old daughter Paige, who has special needs, out of the car. Will she go easily? If she doesn’t and digs her stubborn heels in, how long will it take me to convince her? We eventually get to the front and are greeted warmly by Joe who knows our names and plays along as Paige tries to scare him with a lighthearted “boo!” As we make our way to the sanctuary, we are met with friendly faces and kind smiles. The anxiety has passed, and I am home.
A few weeks ago, I was asked if I would like to speak to the Beth El community about ways it could be more helpful and inclusive to families with members who have special needs. The truth is that this congregation has always been welcoming. There is an array of wonderful things going on at Beth El and I can’t imagine our lives without our Beth El family, but honestly, it’s difficult to participate individually or as a family because of the complexities a simple outing can bring.
Over the years of much trial and error and determination to find activities that are fulfilling for Paige, I would like to share several resources, where we have found terrific success.
Friendship Circle (friendshipcircle.org) gives individuals with special needs the chance to bond with teen volunteers. While children and volunteers foster meaningful connections, parents receive valuable time to rest and recharge. Jared Sullivan, a teen volunteer from our Beth El community, was paired with Paige 8 years ago and it has developed into the relationship of a lifetime, not just for them but for our families as well.
Swim Angelfish (swimangelfish.com) is specifically designed to help children with Autism, sensory and motor coordination, anxiety, trauma, or simple discomfort in the water to become safe and independent swimmers. We never thought Paige could learn to swim, but how wrong we were!
Camp HASC (camphasc.org) has changed our lives forever! It is a seven week sleep away camp designed specifically for Jewish children with special needs, intellectual and physical disabilities. At camp, Paige swims, rides an adaptive bicycle, plays on the playground, does arts and crafts and many other things. The relationship she has formed with her counselors is incredible. She has even gone for sleepovers with their families for Shabbat! Seven of them came to her Bat-Mitzvah in October and the ones who are currently living in Israel Whatsapp her weekly!
GYMGYZ (gymgyz.com) is an in-home personal training company that customizes workouts for any fitness level. Paige was matched with a trainer who skillfully figured out her abilities both physically and cognitively.
Homefield Bowl (homefieldbowl.com) is a classic bowling alley in Yonkers that has made the simple act of bowling possible for Paige with a welcoming environment.
Southeast Consortium (secrec.org) is a community-based organization dedicated to providing therapeutic recreation programs and leisure-related services to children and adults with disabilities and other special needs.
Pegasus (pegasustr.org) offers PATH certified instructors, physical and occupational therapists and licensed educators to provide equine-based activities and therapies.
Access Equestrian (accessequestrian.org) in Mount Kisco provides adaptive horse-riding lessons for both children and adults with a broad range of disabilities. Adaptive riding is a unique and flexible concept that aims to overcome rider limitations by making simple adaptations to teaching methods, equipment or needed support.
Please feel free to contact me directly at nrothberg@yahoo.com for more insight into any of these wonderful organizations. - Naomi FioRito
Each organization that Naomi describes allows people with disabilities to enjoy activities that may be impossible for them in settings not attuned to their needs. They inspire us to use creativity, flexibility, and empathy to create a Jewish community that understands and accommodates the needs of all members to enable participation from everyone. Please contact me at csfox99@gmail.com if you know of a way that Keruv can help Beth El to better accommodate people with special needs, or if you would like to get involved.

Nursery School News
One of the most joyous times of the year for children, the holiday of Hanukkah, presents a wealth of learning opportunities in the Nursery School. We pride ourselves as being a process oriented school - a place where deep learning occurs through exploration and investigation. In general, we are not a product-oriented place where projects, usually teacher-directed, are the focus. However, when it comes to our Jewish holidays, we believe in the importance of traditions. Thus we guide children in creating a ritual object, something that families can use for many years to come.
One two-year-old class used an oil bottle to create a Chanukiya for their families. Two year olds love to stuff, and they were given a wealth of materials – pompoms, pipe cleaners, beads, and wooden pieces, which they used to fill their bottles. When placed horizontally, there was ample space for tiles and bolts that were glued on to hold candles. Another twos class used baby food jars glued to a paint stirrer, and they also stuffed to their heart’s content. We are confident that these chanukiyot will be used for many years as part of our two -year-old families’ tradition.
Hanukkah is not just about candles-it’s about oil as well. Our three year olds did many experiments involving oil and comparing oil and wax. They made beautiful chanukiot that will house oil cups when they light at home with their families.
And let’s not forget our four-year-olds who made a unique Candle Box Holder covered with a beautiful chanukiah that they embroidered on the top. Their box is just the right size to hold the 44 candles necessary for the holiday.
And what would Hanukkah be without delicious latkes fried in oil?! It was our pleasure to host a number of parent volunteers who came to school to help with frying.
Our annual Hanukkah Chagigah was a fabulous success! Children and parents in our 3s and 4s classes gathered in the Ballroom for our traditional Hanukkah Chagigah: candle lighting, communal singing and dancing with our Music Director, Moreh Jack. A few highlights of our program: seeing four dads create a huge human dreidel and spin around at different speeds, and watching our clergy and synagogue leaders jump out of the frying pan and run around the room acting the part of runaway latkes.
Following singing, families spent time with their children experiencing first- hand the creative process and methodology of good early childhood practice. They built chanukiot in the block corner, played dreidel, explored light and dark with our light tables, explored Chanukah puzzles and matching games, played Pin the Shammash on the chanukiah, and engaged in a variety of art activities related to the holiday. Although we were all a bit dizzy from spinning
around like dreidels, it did not stop us from enjoying some tasty sufganiot (jelly doughnuts), latkes and applesauce. We look forward to celebrating many more holidays together with our extended Beth El community.
We all know that famous phrase, “It is better to give than to receive,” but this is a difficult concept to convey to children, who are culturally bombarded with a much different message. We would like to thank our parent body for remembering to send tzedakah coins with the children. This hands-on-approach helps the children internalize one of the important meanings of “doing a mitzvah.”
As Jews, we are obligated to walk the world mindfully. We teach our children to act with kavod- respect; to realize their responsibilities towards one another and the earth. Our parent body launched a Mitzvah Committee, a program that seeks to increase our children’s understanding of what a mitzvah is and promote a desire in our children to perform acts of kindness. Many pairs of mittens and gloves were collected for The Sharing Shelf and displayed on our Chaverim Chanukiah in the lower lobby.
There is no question that the Hebrew month of Kislev, filled with the joyous and magical holiday of Hanukkah, could be our favorite one of all!
Ronnie Becher, Director Beth El Nursery SchoolTeen Community
The first semester of the Teen Collab has been incredibly successful. In conjunction with five other Conservative synagogues-–JCC Harrison, Pelham Jewish Center, Shaarei Tikvah, Temple Israel Center, and Westchester Jewish Center— this program features opportunities for dynamic and engaging learning for our teens. Located at the JCC, there are two modules left this year (winter, spring) and each module features multiple tracks for teens to choose from. Teens can learn about Israeli Culture with one of our Shinshinim, dive into ideas about Jewish social justice and issues in our broader Westchester community, or take part in a Jewish leadership course co-taught by clergy from all of the synagogues (this track is for 11th and 12th graders only!). We are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner across communities and allow our teens to engage with new peers and educators.
You can still register for the winter or spring modules at bethelnr.org/form/teencollab2022
In addition to the Westchester Teen Collab, the first half of the year has flown by with many events and we’re having a blast. We are so proud of all of the teens who participated in Youth and Family Engagement Shabbat-- it was amazing to see the synagogue full of families and to hear teens reading Torah, teaching, and leading services!
The focus for the winter and spring is enhancing our programming with Shabbat activities (join us Shabbat morning, February 4th!) and lounge nights (the next one is January 25th!). Our mix between offsite activities and ritual events, leadership opportunities, volunteering, and learning together give space for every teen to find something that fits them. Shout out to our Teen Leadership Board for working together to plan an awesome year! Keep up with our Instagram and emails to register for our programming!

Youth & Family Engagement Department – 2023 Update!
Hi everyone, As we begin 2023, it’s amazing to look back and reflect on everything the Youth & Family Engagement Department did in 2022! In addition to Religious School and regular Shabbat programming, we launched a new Shabbat service–Mini Minyan–for children in early elementary school. Additionally, we started our Potluck in the Park programming, when we enjoy eating Shabbat Kiddush lunch and hanging out in Roosevelt Park together, as well as our Shabbat Afternoon hangouts. We held several special events including a petting zoo at Beth El in honor of Parshat Noach, Hanukkah Pajamakkah, Havdalah & Donut Decorating, and our second annual Hanukkah Day of Chesed.
We welcomed 2023 spending time together at Youth and Family Shabbat on January 6th and 7th and we look forward to more fun events this year. We will enjoy a Kids Koncert with Bobby Doo Wah on Monday, January 18 (MLK Day), as well as ice skate together on Sunday,
Best, Alyssa SchwagerSecurity Committee Update
The Committee is meeting regularly and continues to focus on the importance of creating a safe environment for the breadth of activity that takes place within Beth El. As part of that effort, education and preparedness is of utmost importance. We hope that you are planning to attend the safety awareness event on Thursday, January 26, at 7 pm. We will continue to offer these on-site situational awareness educational sessions so that we raise our collective understanding of the building and actions we can take to ensure our overall safety. Our awareness campaign also includes the implementation of a Shabbat service security announcement, to keep our congregants and guests informed and safe. Please remember this campaign’s intent is not to unnerve, but is to create awareness and to educate.
In addition to these efforts, we continue to monitor our operational protocols and the physical building and make
improvements as needed. We always look to balance the sanctity of Beth El with prudent measures that are meant to bolster our resilience. We will be applying for a Homeland Security grant in 2023 to support these efforts.
Lastly, we are looking to add members to our First Responders Committee. These volunteers will augment our capabilities for medical care in an emergency. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Marilyn Russell at mrussell@bethelnr.org.
Thank you
Security Committee
Michael Dorfman (Chair), Jeff Mittleman, Russell Fayer, Rachel Casanova, and Marilyn Russell (Beth El Facilities Administrator)Child Safety Committee Update
The Child Safety Committee is in the final stages of revising Beth El’s Child Safety policy and plans to share it with the congregation in early 2023.
We are continuing our ongoing education around child safety. Members of the Committee, clergy and other Beth El staff recently participated in a training program, bringing
together faith and child protection communities. We had the opportunity to participate in sessions around best practices in implementing child protection policies in faith communities, responding to the spiritual impact of child abuse, and learning about the role of religious institutions in addressing child maltreatment.

Sisterhood Shiva Meals
by Carole GrahamA little over ten years ago, my Mom passed away. Right after the funeral, I received a call from a Sisterhood member, Blanche Fried, offering me a Shabbat Shiva Dinner. It made me feel so supported, comforted, and cared for. When I got up from Shiva, I called Blanche, and told her that I thought this was such a wonderful kindness and if she ever needed help to please let me know. That’s how I got involved.
Every family that suffers a loss receives a call or email from me extending condolences and an offer for a Shabbat Shiva Dinner. I get many thank you notes and I want to share a thank you note “You are the Shiva Dinner SuperHero. This is one of Sisterhood’s most welcome services. It was like a warm hug.” I think that quote says it all. Not only do the families really appreciate this kindness, it makes me feel that I am doing something to help ease their mourning. I do it out of love and genuine caring for others. I always think of the expression “we take care of our own.” It increases the sense of our Beth El Community.
Chesed Community Shiva Meals by Sandy Gruenberg and Joyce
WechslerWe got involved in the Chesed Community’s Send a Meal program a number of years ago. We decided that a strong community has a responsibility to provide help to families in need during periods of great joy and great stress. We started bringing home-cooked meals to new parents, those who were recovering from hospitalizations, and an extra meal to those sitting shiva locally for three days or longer. Now the effort has grown so that a different committee cares for the new parents, our communal kitchen freezer project cares for those who are ill and in need of a meal, and we continue to provide meals for shiva.
We have a group of about 15 volunteers who make meals and deliver them to shiva homes. We feel that our actions help to strengthen our community both by offering volunteers a mitzvah to do and mourners a chance to receive one. It is Jewish tradition to comfort the mourner and this is our way of bringing a bit of Beth El into your home when the need is there.
Contact Joyce Wechsler or Sandy Gruenberg for info on mourner support and Lisa Sitkin for new parent support! (joywechsler@gmail.com gamson36@gmail.com Lkmendler@gmail.com)

Here is an update about the four families we are helping to settle here in Westchester.
• The Ghafoor family celebrated five years in the U.S. Not only is Mahnaz catering, but she is now a seamstress for a local men’s store. Mosawer (8) follows his big brother in being a soccer star. Who knew that an 8 year old could be recruited! And Fardin is moving up in the commercial real estate business.
Fardin passed his American Citizenship Test on December 20. He will become the first American Citizen that ICNAW assisted with settlement.
• The Ghafoori family celebrated their one-year anniversary in Westchester. Farhad was rewarded for his hard work at Danon by being given additional responsibilities. We are happy to report that Farhad and his family all have Green Cards now.
• Sadia, Nabil, and Khujesta are all finishing a semester of coursework at Westchester Community College and working on next steps in planning for college. Khujesta is now working at J Crew as well!
• The Ghafoori family are watching with wonder as Yasna comes home from The Learning Center preschool (Memorial Methodist Church in WP gifted her a full scholarship) with all the new things she is learning. At the fall parents teachers conference her teacher told Haida how much they love her and how well she is doing.
Support comes in many forms: money, of course, but time to share simple family events with a refugee family or your particular skills in areas like education, finance, business or real estate. We all have much to offer these families.
And save the date! Join us on Saturday, March 4, at 9 am, for Refugee Shabbat.
We hope we can count on your help.

REFUGEE ASSISTANCE: in need of learning toys for 18-24 months
It's time to clean out your toy box! Some of our refugee families are in need of manipulative toys such as knob puzzles, shape toys, blocks, large Lego blocks, etc.
If you can donate anything, please send a picture of the toy to lilrhodie@gmail.com to avoid duplication. We will arrange to pick up any donations from you.
Thanks for your support. The Refugee Assistance Committee
