A Return to Tradition

Located in a highly desirable neighborhood in Vestavia Hills, the 2022 Inspiration Home o ers a return to Birmingham’s beloved classic architecture. “ e design is pulled from Northern European and English styles,” says home designer Adam Gerndt. “I wanted the scale of the house to be appropriate to the neighborhood and not overpowering to the lot. e goal was to include more developed details, textures, and

materials rather than just creating a really big house.”

Exterior details give the home instant character and a sense of age. “ ere are a few features on the exterior that are subtle, such as the chamfered corners on the brick chimneys that you may not notice at rst glance, but the house has an overall layering of details,” Adam says. “I think the barrel-arched front entry with the leaded-glass arched dormer above is my favorite exterior element.” Other attributes such as the the Sierra Paci c

It’s not always easy to find an empty lot in a well-established neighborhood. For this Inspiration Home, Saunders

Bradford found a home in need of improvement on a desired lot in Vestavia Hills, but the builders and their client decided that they preferred new construction over renovation. Instead of tearing down the existing house, the homeowners and builders donated it to Build Up so it could provide a new home for another family while also helping educate tradesmen during renovations.

ABOUT BUILD UP

Build Up is the nation’s first and only workforce development model that provides lowincome youth with careerready skills. Through paid apprenticeships involving industry-aligned secondary and post-secondary academic coursework, participants in the program become educated, credentialed, and empowered professionals, homeowners, and/ or landlords. They gain the tools necessary to lead successful lives, such as job-ready skills, leadership training, a high school diploma, and even an associate’s degree. And families enrolled in the program have access to affordable, stable housing they can take pride in and even rent to earn a passive income and build wealth. Through stable leadership and improved economic status, students and families are empowered to lead long-term revitalizations of their communities.

The entry is a veritable antiques gallery. Home designer Adam Gerndt devised a graciously sized space that would set the tone for the home, and the team at Henhouse Antiques took the cue by lling it with vignettes of 18th- and 19th-century pieces.

“We wanted to create a space that was inviting and comfortable and would allow guests to move from the foyer to the other rooms with ease,” says the design team. A mahogany

wing chair covered in a kilim pairs with a Jacobean chest of drawers to anchor the stair access. A nearby wall features a French server with antique oil jars and a Louis Phillippe mirror above (page 30). In the front hall, an arrangement of fruit-drying racks is hung to create a windmill e ect (page 30). The team at Stock & Trade Design Co. created the living room for both comfort and entertaining while infusing it with sophistication and dramatic air. Details large and small o er contrast and playful tension, inviting guests to soak in every angle of the room. “As the home’s primary entertaining and living space, we envisioned a room re ned enough to give a great rst impression,” says Christopher Rankin, chief creative o cer with Stock & Trade. “But we also wanted it to be welcoming since this is the space where family and friends gather and relax every day.”

Home designer Adam Gerndt says, “Flow is extremely important. Other than natural light, that is one of the areas I place a signi cant focus on when designing.” Adam also explains that he avoids dead ends in homes, especially in the living spaces. “I always try to incorporate multiple openings and ways to move through the home,” he says. “Here, the primary living space ows well from the kitchen/den to the living room, dining room, and covered porch.”

To maximize seating and maintain an easy tra c ow, the designers anchored upholstery in the center of the room and pulled it together with an oversized, diamond-patterned wool

In the middle of it all, two square co ee tables create the look of one oversized piece, o ering plenty of room for accessories. e crisp white nish and clean edges of the tables are punctuated by eye-catching co ee table books and a sculpture. For contrast in texture and style, the team introduced a pair of consoles with ornate turned legs and a stained wood nish on either side of the replace. Best Advice

What’s the first thing I need to consider when purchasing a rug?

One of the rst things I always consider when purchasing any investment piece is the versatility of the piece. I want it to be something that can be used in my home for a long time and then passed down. And while it is important to love the look of the rug, it’s also vital to nd the right size.

Do all of the rugs in my home need to coordinate? It depends on the buyer’s preference. I have some clients who love a more eclectic look in their home while others insist on having rugs that perfectly coordinate. I don’t think there is any right or wrong answer. I say buy what you love and you will nd a place for it. My home is grounded in Moroccan, Turkish, and Persian rugs, but they all work beautifully together. Hiring a designer who can help you nd what sizes and pieces work with your home can be bene cial.

Are rugs a good starting point for laying the foundation for a color scheme in a room?

I love seeing a room transform around a rug. Trying to nd a rug after fabrics and paint colors have been selected can sometimes feel like trying to nd a needle in a haystack. It isn’t impossible, and we certainly help customers do that a lot. However, it makes the process a little easier if you start with the rug.

Are different types of rugs better suited to different areas of the house?

I love Turkish Kilims or any low-pile rugs in high-tra c areas of the home. My kitchen runner is a vintage Turkish Anatolian with an extremely low pile so it can handle tra c and spills. Higher pile rugs, such as a Moroccan or Turkish Tulu, are great for warming up bedrooms and family rooms. Also, one of the best things about investing in authentic Oriental rugs is that they are 100% wool and are super easy to clean.

Energy and e ciency go hand in hand when it comes to home design. By combining smart appointments with attractive, sizable task areas, you can create a home that performs well for daily tasks—and that makes a di erence on your bills. Saunders Bradford chose natural gas for appliances and heat, a decision that will both cut the homeowner’s costs and be convenient when the power grid fails. Additionally, the builder chose spray-foam insulation, a material that not only aids in the e ciency of heating and cooling systems but also o ers a noise barrier and an airtight seal to protect against mold and mildew. “As a custom builder, it’s important for me to think through every little detail—the ones you can see and the ones you can’t,” says builder Mitch Bradford of Saunders Bradford.

SMART INSULATION

Open-cell, spray-foam insulation provides both air and thermal barriers in the home. It enhances the efficiency of the heating and cooling systems, provides more consistent comfort through winter and summer seasons, and helps with noise reduction and humidity levels in the house. The use of closed-cell, spray-foam insulation in a crawlspace provides benefits such as an airtight seal, a clean environment, a moisture barrier, and improved air quality in both the crawlspace and the house. It also is a deterrent to mold and helps with noise reduction.

BENEFITS OF NATURAL GAS

• Natural gas appliances cost less to operate and work even when the power is out.

• Professional chefs prefer natural gas because you can choose precise temperature controls and options for charring, toasting, and flambéing.

• Natural gas water heaters heat water twice as fast.

• Natural gas tankless water heaters only heat the water you’re actively using, which makes them 34% more efficient than traditional models. Plus, their small size saves space.

• No matter how cold it gets, natural gas furnaces keep your home cozy. Electric heat pumps need supplemental heat when temperatures drop below 32 degrees. And natural gas furnaces are more durable and have twice the lifespan.

• Natural gas fireplaces are cleaner and easier to operate.

• Natural gas outdoor lights offer dependable security and safety— and they don’t attract bugs.

• Natural gas is affordable. On average, U.S. households that use natural gas for heating, cooking, and clothes drying save nearly $900 every year compared to homes using electricity for the same activities.*

• Natural gas is reliable. Thanks to its efficient, underground delivery system, natural gas remains one of the safest, most reliable forms of energy for homes and businesses—even during the most severe weather.*

• Natural gas is clean. More efficient energy means cleaner energy. 91% of natural gas from the original source makes it directly to your home. In comparison, by the time electricity is generated and transported to you, only 36% of the original energy makes it to your home.*

Small spaces present big opportunities. Details make the difference. Add more dimension to the overall design with thoughtful, secondary layers such as this custom pleated lampshade, the scalloped edge on the coverlet, and the fringe on the drapery and accent pillows.

Practicality and durability are necessities in any child’s room. Kids make messes and they grow and change quickly, so the room has to be amenable to each stage of a child’s life. To some, that may mean disposable furniture and lots of plastic, but designer Virginia McCary has a di erent opinion. In this girl’s room, she proves that practical can also be pretty.

To create a space that will evolve, Virginia designed a daybed that can easily be converted into a pair of twin headboards. She also chose fabric in a color that could work well in other spaces. “ e green Cowtan & Tout ticking stripe would also

suit a playroom, a boy’s room, or a guest room,” she says. With green as her base color, Virginia selected coordinating hues, prints, and nishes for other design elements. As the Inspiration Home’s design liaison, Britney Bradford of Neylan Design looked to the home’s deft mix of transitional and contemporary furnishings when planning this guest bedroom. e 19th-century Chinese painting of a pheasant on silk invoked the blue-green color palette. In the room’s entry (page 66), a modern painting by Carrie Pittman Hill adds to the subtle mood and pairs well with the soft, Mongolian fur stool.

Drapes hung from Lucite-and-brass rods set o the custom bed that features warm-toned performance velvet. Linens are neutral, topped with accent pillows from Too Pillows and a blue Bella Notte coverlet at the foot of the bed. An antique rug from LillieKat Rugs brings together the array of muted colors.

On either side of the bed, nightstands made of lacquered oak covered in burlap with a champagne-tone metal inlay are topped with hand-shaped, glazed black lamps for contrast. Drawers and shelves o er a place to tuck accessories and reading materials.

e bleached oak desk from Bungalow 5 features rounded edges that soften the room while introducing a modern shape. “It’s aways nice to add a desk or workspace to a guest bedroom,” Britney says. “ at way, overnight guests have a quiet place to catch up on work or correspondence.”
