Picture a country house wedding, and a timeless affair with a neutral palette and luxurious touches will inevitably spring to mind. In this styled shoot, Cornish wedding venue Boconnion, with a Georgian manor house at its heart and acres of lush, rolling grounds, makes a fitting canvas for a classic wedding with a luxe, modern edge. Elegant grooms’ attire sets the mood: a black tux and grey dinner suit teamed with crisp white shirts nod to tradition, while the sheen of velvet and hints of soft pink add a contemporary touch. Clusters of blousy white blooms and foliage combine the aesthetic with a modern, wildly beautiful style: a hexagonal wooden arch woven with foliage and pampas grass makes a breathtaking ceremony setting against the spectacular trees and sweeping valley views of the Copper Beech Lawn. Soft grey offsets the clean palette in the stationery suite, while the marbled tiers of the cake make a captivating focal point, dressed with elaborate ruffles for a dash of glamour. Just add cocktails served beneath the trees and a menu of beautifully presented dishes and you have one oh-so chic celebration.

earth story A warm palette, coral pampas grass and boho-chic accessories create a laid-back look for a relaxed Cornish wedding photography Olivia WR Fine Art Photography styling The Little Details by Sophie concept Bliss Bridal Gowns Cradled by acres of forested Cornish countryside in the heart of the county, The Fox’s Revenge is a hidden gem where weddings can take place in a secluded garden tipi. Here, it makes a dream canvas for a relaxed wedding embracing rich, nature-inspired hues, wow factor florals and a modern boho bridal vibe. “My love of the Jurassic Coast was the inspiration for the colour palette,” explains Tracy Ashton of Bliss Bridal Gowns who devised the shoot’s concept. Echoing the earthy tones of the landscape, bold terracotta, orange and gold are spliced with shades of coral and neutral hues of beige, brown and ivory. “The black accent colour was chosen to bring a contemporary edge to the look,” she adds. The stationery captures the palette and mood perfectly, as does the striking wedding cake, flanked by handmade chocolates and a tower of macarons and gourmet marshmallows. The floristry echoes the wild beauty of the shoot’s coastal muse, from the clusters of Fairtrade garden roses, butterfly ranunculi and dried stems of the bouquet to the coral-dyed pampas grass of the installation and table arrangements. At the centre of this alluring scene, the bride dons a stunning silhouette, a soft shimmer bringing a luxe edge to the coolly laid-back vibe of her shoulder-grazing earrings and statement fedora.

MORE THAN A DRESS

Some people don’t seem to get it, do they? Granted, the melodramatic antics of a few

House of St Patrick, Bridal Gossip

don’t help, such as during

one particularly memorable episode of ‘Don’t Tell The Bride’ in which after slipping into the gown chosen by her groom, the teary-eyed bride pouted: “I don’t even want to marry him!” Rebecca Ingram Bliss Bridal Gowns

Still, the fact remains that it isn’t just a dress. Moreover, it is one of the most important dresses that you’ll wear on one of the most important days

Wilderly The Bridal Studio

of your life. You’ll want to look and – more importantly – feel your absolute best. You’ll want a frock that represents your sense of style, fits and flatters your shape, and reflects your personality, love story, and the day that celebrates it Justin Alexander, Elaine Rawlings Bridal Boutique-

all. Plus, it has to stand the sartorial test of time for the rest of your life whenever you swoon at those allimportant wedding photos. It sounds impossible, but is surprisingly simple. First off, ‘do you’. Try every type of silhouette and skirt length to find the one that you like and that likes you the most. Picked your perfect shape? Next it’s time to hone in on the details for a top-trending design feature or two in order to create a fashion-forward ensemble that’s

also forever yours. We’ve scoured the runways for four of our favourite and most wearable trends that should set your hearts suitably aflutter.

Victoria Kay, Coastal Bridal

Full skirts Big skirts are nothing new, but they’ve received a very couture and modern makeover of late. Today’s skirts are made to move in and combine dynamic cuts and weightless fabrics for a transformative, dimensional and dance-floor-ready feel. Think layers of light-as-air tulle and organza, cascading ruffles, in-built or removable trains, detachable overskirts, giant back bustles, tiered skirts, and voluminous ball gowns for the most fabulous of full skirts. Frothy princess frocks smack of fairytale romance, while the clean and structured elegance of a mikado ball gown, figurehugging fit-and-flare, or an elaborate fishtail all ooze old school glamour. Contemporise the look with a two-piece comprising a flowing maxi, tassel or feathered skirt (or super-flared trousers) or play with hemlines such as a short/midi puffball skirt, a high-low ruffle tutu skirt, or a ‘50s rockabilly tea-length with extra petticoats.

For a more subtle yet still eye-catching version, think illusion backs (with floral embroidery), lace high necks, carefully placed cut-outs, draping cowl backs, and low keyhole details. Meanwhile, adornments and accessories such as hand-stitched beading and jewels, oversized back bows and back necklaces create further interest, while softening and individualising the overall effect.

New lace Nothing evokes ethereal romance quite like lace, which continues its love affair with wedding dresses in a series of reimagined and jawdropping ways. Whether you envision channelling your inner hippie with head-to-toe lace, striking a note of timeless Hollywood glamour with a vintage lace top, or causing a sartorial stir with a lingerie-style lace corset, the brilliant versatility of lace lends itself to a multitude of looks. Elaborate patterns and embellishments ensure the mainstay remains fabulously en vogue. Laser-cut, geometric, guipure, 3D textured, lattice and patchwork lace are being worn all over, or via panelling and separates. Up the ante with beaded floral lace, graphic embroidery, pearl-encrusted and hand-sewn appliqué, 3D textured lace, or the new boho take on lace: crochet.

Off-the-shoulder One of the biggest buzzwords dropping off designers’ lips is décolleté. Off-the-shoulder gowns ooze elegance, but can also fall into the haute couture category courtesy of the latest dynamic designs. In particular, dropped sleeves are all the rage, and anything that incorporates them scores extra style points. One-shouldered asymmetric styles are seeing a resurgence, while bateau and cap-sleeved gowns give a beautiful vintage vibe.

BE JEWELLED From statement stacks to headturning gems, prepare to be captivated by these dazzling jewels words Rebecca Matthews

PEARLY QUEEN Statement earrings are a must-have for fashion-forward brides and the first jewellery collection from shoe designer Freya Rose is brimming with aisle-worthy wonders. Pearls are at the heart of a collection awash with the likes of bohochic drop hoops with freshwater pearls, hand-beaded tassel earrings filled with tiny pearls and hand-carved mother-ofpearl rose hoops – all responsibly sourced and handmade by Balinese craftspeople. freyarose.com

OCEAN TREASURES Based in St Ives, the ocean is a constant source of inspiration for jewellery designer Stephanie Stevens, who designs and lovingly handcrafts bespoke engagement and wedding rings as well as special occasion jewellery from her seaside studio. From her popular curved wedding rings to engagement rings studded with aquamarines and sapphires that echo the sea, Stephanie’s creations are enriched with beauty and personal meaning. Perfectly in keeping with her ethos and coastal environment, her diamond rings are set with exquisite stones from Ocean Diamonds. Hand-picked by diamond divers off the coasts of Namibia and South Africa, these completely natural and exceptionally high quality stones are sustainably sourced, conflict-free and boast an irrepressible sparkle. “We are now able to order melee diamonds from Ocean Diamonds, which I am so excited about as it means they will be small enough to set into wedding bands,” explains Stephanie, meaning all her diamond rings will now boast the captivating sparkle of these seabed treasures. stephaniestevensjewellery.co.uk

INTO THE BLUE Drawing on the colours and textures of the tideline, west Cornwall-based jeweller Emily Nixon has honed a striking and naturally irregular style reflective of nature’s artful beauty. Dotted with ethically sourced ocean sapphires and diamonds, these finely crafted studs make a delicate yet dazzling finishing touch for brides planning a water’s edge wedding. emilynixon.com

PERFECT MATCH Renowned for his contemporary jewellery crafted from recycled precious metals, salvaged woods and ethically sourced gemstones, jeweller Justin Duance is perhaps best known for his sandcast creations. This set is a captivating example, featuring an engagement ring, a set of textured wedding rings and a matching set of studs to be gifted on the wedding morning. “All the pieces are cast in recycled 14ct white gold which has a lovely stormy grey colour, and each piece has had little reclaimed vintage diamonds organically set for a subtle sparkle as they catch the light,” explains Jamila Hirtenstein at Justin Duance. “The couple chose sand from our collection to cast the rings and studs in. We happened to have the sands from their favourite beaches in Thailand where they love to holiday.” Although the workshop houses a considerable collection of sand from across the globe, couples are welcome to source sand from a particular beach, whether it was the location of your engagement or the setting of a childhood holiday, to create a ring rich with texture and personal significance. justind.co.uk

BETTER TOGETHER Jeweller Emily Nixon has spied a trend we can really get behind here at Wed. “It’s all about stacking at the moment – and in particular some really fabulous colourful stacks,” says Chloe Wild at Emily Nixon. “Emily’s ‘Colours of the Coast’ stack is just stunning! The sapphire hues in teal, indigo, gorse and bluebell are sparkling reminders of the array of colours found along Cornwall’s coast paths in early summer.” Eye-catching and one-of-a-kind, it’s a perfect choice for brides seeking a standout engagement and wedding ring combination that captures the wonders of Cornwall. emilynixon.com

Country gents have never been so cool. Whether you’re tying the knot in a rustic barn, throwing a festival-style celebration in a field, or hosting a party in a country house, achieving the pastoral look is as easy as it is en vogue. Suits in earth tones (sage, chestnut, rust) and tweeds are a top contender, while patterns such as checks, herringbone and windowpane continue to captivate tailors. Sustainable is an additional element, so add something vintage, vegan or ethically sourced for extra kudos. Florals are another mainstay. or bow tie. Go statement with a single bold ’70s floral print spliced into a muted outfit, or lend a little interest with a botanical detail. Complete your ensemble with brogues, braces and a dried or wild flower boutonniere with a twine-wrapped pin – and voilà: ‘cottagecore’ has received a contemporary and very dapper makeover! 1. PASTEL PANACHE A go-to for spring and summer nuptials, pastel shades are an easy-onthe-eye, versatile and super-stylish choice. Sport a pale chalky shade via your entire suit, or select an item or two to effortlessly spruce up and individualise your grooms wear. Wedding world is currently crushing on pale lilac, powder blue, candy pink and mint green. Work them into your three-piece, buttonhole, tie, or don a pair of pastel-hued shoes for instant panache. 1. SMOOTH OPERATOR You can’t beat black tie for a smart sense of occasion. While designers continue to experiment with silhouettes, the classic slim-cut black suit/crisp white shirt/bow tie combination remains as debonair as ever. Having said that, you can adapt the look to, well… suit. Double-breasted is back with a vengeance, as is tightly tailored with clean lines or relaxed, wider-fit silhouettes. Then there’s the timelessly stylish tux. Modernise it with an all-white tuxedo coat paired with black trousers for country club chic, choose a velvet tux (in a shade of midnight blue or ruby), throw in some pinstripes or go minimal in monochrome. So long as it’s your take on a trend, it’ll be forever ‘you’. 1. The Grooms Room Plymouth the-wedding-company.co.uk 2. Torre at Little Anne-Maids littleanne-maids.co.uk 3. THE BRIGHT STUFF

3.

Bold and daring are the leading colour keynotes as grooms step out of the shadows and into the limelight. Rock anything current, including metallics in gold and silver, brights (or what Pantone refers to as ‘Power Surge’) – such as shocking red, electric blue, zesty lime and tangerine orange – or even acid tones of neon pink and lemon yellow. Colour blocking, bright striped or printed blazers create extra edge, or you might prefer to incorporate some striking shades into the minutiae. EASY BREEZY Men’s fashion is enjoying a maritime moment. Shades of blue are both breezy and traditional, moving from baby tones towards the darker side of midnight. Think woven suits in dark or navy blue with white accents, or a sharp bright blue three-piece, sweetened with a blush tie. For a more casual beach-inspired look go for sand coloured chinos or a neutral or caramel linen suit, while Hawaiian prints and accessories evoke more playful and laid-back vibes. Alternatively, channel what some are calling your inner ‘shipster’ and weave a nautical feel into your ensemble with Breton stripes, sailor shirts and anchor motifs. Ahoy, indeed! 1. BOHEMIAN DREAM

Set amidst a secluded valley in the heart of Cornwall, new wedding venue Boconnion offers romance and rural charm in equal measure. The cluster of refurbished buildings, including a Georgian manor house, farmhouse and reception barn, together with acres of gardens and ancient oak woodland, also offer a versatile setting for a wedding, as this styled shoot illustrates in dreamy style. “When you book Boconnion for a weekend wedding, the choice of where to entertain your guests is almost endless, so I wanted to show couples the various options we offer,” explains wedding planner Caroline Griffiths, who coordinated the shoot. Whether it’s timelessly classic or contemporary chic, this charm-packed venue has a beautiful backdrop to suit and, here, a relaxed, bohemian vibe was the starting point. The team drew inspiration from the season for the aesthetic of the shoot. “As it was spring, we chose pastel colours and lots of pampas grass,” says Caroline. “The focal point was the Absolute Canvas marquee on the lawn. I wanted to create a space where couples could have their marquee wedding in a relaxed environment as well as using the heated swimming pool for a chill-out area.” Pampas grass clouds are stunning against the cream canvas of the traditional marquee, while shades of oatmeal and blush pink, together with gold cutlery and rattan charger plates, capture the soft palette and earthy textures that underpin the shoot. The cakes – a gorgeous trio of confections decorated with barely-there shades, dried palms, pampas grass and delicate florals – follow suit. Dainty petals also feature on grazing boards filled with local flavours, illustrating how your dishes can slot seamlessly into your wedding scheme, offering sensory delight on multiple levels. Every element is about romance, from the pretty pastels of the stationery to the guipure lace, tiered skirt and balloon sleeves of the wedding dress. Accessorised with a floral-filled fedora sitting atop soft golden waves and a bouquet of cream and pink blooms, pampas, feathers, and shimmery lunaria, the bridal look marries modern boho with an ethereal edge. With her groom echoing the laid-back mood in a pink suit, the couple roam the green spaces and picturesque nooks of Boconnion, stopping for loved-up moments beneath an arch bedecked with pampas grass and peacock chairs, and lounging by the pool with a cocktail – a dream setting for a fun, relaxed and oh-so boho wedding.

Immersed in natural beauty on Cornwall’s north coast at Portreath, Gwel an Mor is an idyllic setting, capturing the hearts of couples seeking a modern wedding with a distinctly rustic edge. Set in the midst of spring, this styled shoot celebrates the bounty of the season and the hues of the surrounding landscape at the time of year. The sumptuousness of the luxury lodges at Gwel an Mor provide the perfect space to spend time preparing for your wedding celebrations, designed carefully to fit the needs of all guests in this remote location, with views of Cornish waters and boundless countryside. Drawing on these panoramas for styling inspiration, the neutral tones in the flowers and styled décor lend themselves perfectly to a boho-luxe theme, with warm terracotta tones complementing every detail of the scene. “The natural colours and shapes evoke an emotional response to a beautiful setting,” explains stylist Margarita Tsekeni. The lace gown is the epitome of relaxed elegance with a stunning circular train and floral detailing, while the intricate handcrafted jewellery harmonises with the terracotta tones in the flowers. “I was immediately drawn to the natural rustic colours of the flowers and the warmth of the yurt at Gwel an Mor,” explains jewellery designer Amy Eira. “It really inspired me to create an engagement ring that was a little out of the ordinary. I felt the peach tourmaline was the perfect partner to the more relaxed handcrafted style of both the engagement ring and the theme for the shoot.” From the modern design of the stationery to the statement cake dressed with dried flowers, every detail embraces the beauty of nature and warm, earthy tones, that fit so seamlessly into this awe-inspiring setting.

PEACHES AND CREAM

A palette of pretty shades and romantic detailing create a dreamy scene for an elopement in the Cornish countryside photography Pink Wave Photography styling The Youngest Child

There’s something incredibly romantic about stealing away for a just-fortwo wedding and, with its captivating landscape and away-from-it-all charm, Cornwall is the ultimate location to bask in those cherished moments in complete privacy. Here, Chycara, a tucked-away venue set amidst acres of gardens, provides a picturesque backdrop for a dreamily styled elopement. Taking inspiration from the natural surroundings, the soft palette of cream, peach and pink blends seamlessly with the bloom-filled grounds and tones of the barn. Florals are key to the aesthetic – a draped ceremony arch adorned with clusters of peach, cream and muted pink flowers and foliage makes a striking setting for the vows, while blooms are central to the table styling, with candles, gold tableware and beaded charger plates lending a luxe accent. The stationery continues the floral theme, and the cake, with its subtle marbled tiers and draped detailing, makes a sweet and simple centrepiece. The bride carries the soft aesthetic in her delicate jewellery and shoulder-baring dress; cloaked in floral appliqué, light-catching sequins and heaps of tulle, it couldn’t be more perfect for this pretty-asa-picture scene.

feature | THE GUEST EDIT

that their place on your guest list is conditional on good behaviour. If tensions are high, it might be worth arranging a separate mini celebration, before or after the big day, with anyone who you feel may not be able to put any ill feelings aside for your wedding day.

Friends reunited Yes, we know you promised to be each other’s dress designers when you were 10, but it’s understandable that you might prefer more grown-up designs these days. Friends, of course, are a big part of our wedding days, but try not to launch into your guest list like it was the year 2000. Times and people change. Are the people you promised to party the night away with still a part of your lives? If your friendship groups have matured and diversified over the years, and the numbers are pushing your guest list well over your limit, it might be worth deciding whether to have a few friends from lots of different groups or stick to a couple of groups with more from each group. A single uni friend might struggle if they are reminiscing about the good old days amongst your newbie friends who’ve only known you in your more ‘grown-up years’ and can’t quite imagine you spinning around a sticky dance floor. If this means numbers start to go in the wrong direction, you may have to rule out any new partners who you haven’t met yet. Or perhaps you could organise a separate get-together for certain groups.

Parents’ pride Mum and dad’s friends. Ahh. The ones you still see and called Auntie and Uncle, even though they technically aren’t, are probably high up on your list. However, the couple you haven’t seen since you did a recorder recital for them all those years ago might be trickier to fit into an already-bulging guest list. Guest lists can become complex when parents are contributing to the cost of the wedding, so if this is the case, you may have to agree on a set number of guests they can invite (and accept whoever that is). However, if you are footing the bill, and you have a very open and honest relationship with your parents, broach the subject of their friends not making the grade. If venue size and budget are considerations, be upfront and honest. But if it’s more of a personality clash, and you think they’ll stick out like a sore thumb in amongst the rest of your guests, try to steer around it by suggesting you involve them in another way. Perhaps you could organise a day together where you show them the wedding photos and reminisce about the recorder recital days?!

Colleague conundrum Work friends can often be good sounding boards during wedding planning, as you can discuss everything from veil lengths to bouquet ideas during water cooler moments and lunchtimes. But do they make the grade on the guest list? Weddings can be emotionally intimate events, so it depends on your relationship with your colleagues. If you have intense, formal relationships at work, think long and hard if this is going to translate into your day.

Do you know your colleagues outside work? No one wants to feel awkward on their wedding day when you

Keeper Creative

realise you’ve only ever seen your colleagues in their power suits and now, you’re sobbing into their arms after one too many champagnes. However, if your relationship with your boss or some of your colleagues is relaxed and perhaps you know each other outside of a work capacity, this might make for a more organic approach to adding them to your guest list. Don’t feel pressurised for a blanket work invitation though, as this is a quick way for numbers to spiral. Ultimately, if work and weddings really don’t mix well for you, and your guest list is looking longer than a Pronovias veil, organise a post-work drink where those who want to can wish you well.

One-on-ones Sometimes, acquaintances don’t fit into any of your social groups, and if your guest list is tipping into one-out-one-in territory, it might be wise to organise separate dos for anyone that you’d like to share your happy news with but isn’t a close friend or one of a group of friends. Ideas for these kinds of dos include picnics at the beach or a local beauty spot, afternoon tea somewhere special, a pamper session, an experience like horse riding or go-karting (maybe after the big day!) or a shopping spree. Between Facebook friends, school mates and everyone in-between, the reality for some may be that you can’t invite everyone you want to your big day – but how you go about managing those relationships is key to a happy and healthy guest list. Just try to remember that those who make it onto your guest list should be the people you really want to share your special day with.

CHEERS! The Buffalo/Drinks by Post

Eat, drink and be merry. Sounds simple enough. And while most couples design their menu and entertainment for crowd-pleasing effect, the wedding drinks don’t always receive the same amount of consideration. A welcome drink, something to toast and a few evening tipples must be all it takes, I hear you cry? But to get the best out of your day – and your guests – give them something to drink that’s as unique, flavoursome and stylish as the rest of your celebrations. Who wants a lukewarm Pimm’s when a cool signature cocktail made to order from a wow-worthy mobile bar is an option? We look at how to spruce up your drinks menu and its delivery to guarantee the most unforgettable of parties...

You’re barred Firstly, what type of bar do you want? If your venue already has one, then stock it up and style it out to individually suit. Ask if they can provide a mixologist (or hire your own, with permission) or create a bespoke drinks menu for you. Find out what the options are in order to be as creative and personalised as possible. If you’re hiring a mobile bar service, there are three main options: a cash/card bar Aperol Spritz

(guests will need to be notified in advance), a half and half bar, where couples put a pre-selected amount behind the bar to essentially buy their guests’ first few drinks, or a free bar (for which you’ll be invoiced after the event).

The Buffalo/Drinks by Post

Your budget will likely determine what kind of bar you choose, along with the types of drinks you offer. Discuss monetary matters with your venue and suppliers in order to achieve the best balance between quality and quantity without obliterating your bank balance.

’Tis the season The time of year will have a bearing on your choice of drinks. Nothing beats a bit of mulled wine or a well-aged whisky in winter, while summer is the perfect time to proffer an exotic cocktail or spritz to your guests. “The autumn and winter months have the biggest change in flavours and types of drink,” says Jo Fitch from The Buffalo (thebuffalo.co.uk), whose statement Airstream bars present customised liquid catering of the most lust-worthy kind. “The shorter, stronger drinks as well as warm ones come into play at this time of year and then the lighter, longer, fruitier ones during the sunshine months. With the hotter days, we like to steer towards the lower ABV drinks like a Cornish Spritz (Knightor vermouth and soda) or a Collins. A particular favourite is the Elderflower Collins (citron vodka, elderflower, lemon and soda), keeping guests refreshed rather than weak at the knees! On the cooler Cornish Spritz

autumnal days, a Hot Gin Toddy or an Old-Fashioned are great for sipping and warming the cockles. However, bubbles never go out of fashion!”

The Buffalo/Drinks by Post

Grand reception Whether you want to host a mini pre-ceremony reception – an increasingly popular way to greet guests and create a celebratory atmosphere – or wait until after the vows have been uttered, the drinks reception signifies the party’s official start. The trick is to provide both refreshment and relaxation, so shots and beer-necking aren’t advised at this stage. Focus on the presentation, flavour and experience – with a soundtrack and décor to match. Pick something that reflects you, the season, venue or your wedding theme, and whet your guests’ appetites for the wedding breakfast ahead. “We recommend a long, light drink with some fizz so guests can take their time enjoying it and are refreshed ready for the party ahead,” suggests Jo. “Something like an Elderflower Collins is a great crowd-pleaser and allows us to prepare multiple drinks at a time and then just top up as guests arrive. It can be pretty too – we like to serve it garnished with a flower.”

Drink and dine Whatever catering you choose – whether a buffet, barbecue, street food or sit-down 10-course taster menu – try to match your drinks to your food. For example, a Elderflower Collins

barrel of local beers and ciders works brilliantly with a burger van or hog roast, while

wine pairing can elevate a meal to a fine dining experience. Discuss your ideas with your caterers and drinks suppliers in order to host

The Buffalo/Drinks by Post

the most delectable of wedding feasts. “Wine is obviously the traditional choice, but we increasingly see couples going a bit more personalised for the meal. With more drinks available and tastes changing, catering options are changing too; we’ve seen a rise in barbecue and picnic-style meals where couples want their guests to choose their own drink from the bar,” observes Jo. “We now have couples opting for drink tokens as favours so they can bring their token to the bar and exchange them for a beer, cider, soft drink, cocktail or a glass of wine. These are favours that never get left behind on the table too! I’d suggest taking a minute to think about your meal and what you would like to drink with it, rather than thinking you have to do it the traditional way,” she advises.

Raise a glass Though a glass of bubbly is the traditional choice, not everyone

Virgin Hurricane

The Buffalo/Drinks by Post

(gasp!) actually likes champagne or Prosecco. As it brings a sense of occasion, it’ll be expected to make an appearance at the bar or table by most, but why not also present guests with a more personal or surprising alternative? A cocktail designed by the couple (a twist on your favourite, or inspired by the night you became engaged, perhaps?) or even a shot of something such as tequila, cherry vodka or limoncello works well to ramp up the party atmosphere while infusing a different taste sensation into this part of proceedings. “Do what makes you smile!” says Jo of the endless array of toastworthy tipples.

Party starters

Old Fashioned

“Cocktails!” sings Jo of the ultimate party drink. “The most popular choice is an Espresso Martini. It gets the party rolling and perks you up ready to hit the dance floor! Also, a Hurricane, Passionfruit

The Buffalo/Drinks by Post

Martini, Margarita – the list goes on...” There’s no rule here – it’s all about pleasing yourselves and your guests to foster a state of revelry and let-your-hair-down abandon. Why not ask guests to write down their favourite drink via their RSVP so that it can be stocked in the bar, presented as a favour or featured on the cocktail menu? And don’t forget you can always add a hit of alcohol in other ways, such as a boozy dessert, drinks fountain or a Bailey’s coffee with petit fours, while additions like mini alcoholic jellies and cocktail ice lollies provide extra fun, flavour and colour.

Booze-free beauties Don’t forget that you’ll need some non-alcoholic thirst-quenchers to keep guests of all ages and states of sobriety hydrated and happy.

Espresso Martini

Again, this provides an opportunity to be inventive with your drinks by creating a virgin cocktail list, tropical smoothie or super juice menu – or you could book a mobile café with a selection of hot

beverages and specialist coffees for caffeine perks, belly warmers, and afternoon teas. “We always provide at least two mocktail options such as a homemade raspberry lemonade, strawberry Nojito or virgin Hurricane,” enthuses Jo of the lip-smacking list available. “All are fantastic drinks in their own right and the young ones just love to have a cocktail made just for them!”

SUMMER IN A GLASS

BOOZY BEAUTIES Fruity, flavoursome and oh-so refreshing, there’s a heady choice of alcoholic beverages for a summer celebration. Choose a local favourite for a delicious and decidedly Cornish tipple.

Taste of sunshine Tarquin’s Gin needs little introduction. Since its inception in 2012, Tarquin Leadbetter has taken the gin scene by storm with his Cornish Dry Gin, which he handcrafts in small batches in a copper pot still on the Cornish coast. Nine years later, there’s a whole range of exquisite, award-winning gins to choose from. From Strawberry and Lime and Cornish Sunshine Blood Orange to Pink Grapefruit and Elderflower, our favourite pick for summer weddings has to be Rhubarb and Raspberry. Lovingly infused with the most delicious rhubarb and raspberries, this beautiful blush-coloured gin boasts tasting notes of lemon sherbet, fresh raspberries and soft juniper on the nose, and rhubarb sorbet, crisp pine and Eastern spice on the palate. It’s a crisp, fruity alternative to a classic gin and tonic, with a tart raspberry jam, zesty citrus and frangipane finish. Top it up with ginger ale, raspberries and a sprig of mint, and your guests will be in G&T heaven! tarquinsgin.com

Joy in a can We’re massive fans of Tinkture’s Rose Gin, a delightfully delicate gin made with David Austin roses here in Cornwall (which also come in ‘Little Guy’ size as a perfectly stylish favour). Whether you pair it with lemon cordial and soda to make a Rose Gin Tom Collins, or simply a splash of tonic for a classic Tink and Tonic, it’s a winning choice for a summer wedding. Their cocktail in a can, Tink & Booch, also hits the spot for sun-filled festivities. Designed with the aim of making the “cleanest cocktail in the world (that still tastes amazing)”, the distinctive and thirst-quenching blend pairs the floral notes of the rose gin with organic lemon and lime kombucha. The result is a beautifully aromatic cocktail in a coolly designed can – sophisticated in flavour and big on refreshment. wearetinkture.com

Sparkle and shine Based on the edge of Penzance, Polgoon’s family-run vineyard and orchard produces a range of artisan Cornish wines, ciders and juices. Its sparkling wines are perfect for a Cornish wedding, with the 2016 Seyval Blanc Sparkling White proving an extra-special choice. With green pear on the nose followed by delicate citrus notes and a good balanced acidity, it’s a stunning celebration wine; serve it as your welcome drink alongside canapés (it’s a dream match with Cornish seafood and charcuterie). If you fancy a floral flavour for your sparkling, opt for the Sparkling Elderflower Wine. Pressed and fermented using the méthode traditionelle to produce a light, dry sparkling wine, it’s infused with a subtle splash of elderflower juice and described as “an English summer meadow in a glass”. Heavenly. polgoon.com

Exotic blend While the beauty of Mainbrace is in its uniquely spliced rum combining two blended styles from Guyana and Martinique, it was dreamt up on the Helford Passage. Produced using locally sourced sugar cane as well as traditional pot and column still distillation, it employs the same methods used to create rum for the British Navy as far back as the 1700s. With no sweeteners or colourings added to the blend, it sings out with grassy notes that quickly subside to caramel, toffee and a subtle spiciness. And you don’t have to take our word for it – since its inception in 2019, Mainbrace Rum has won a plethora of awards, including seven in 2021 already! Delicious on its own, it also pairs perfectly with mixers to create some summer-ready cocktails: add fresh orange juice, ginger beer, ice and orange garnish for an Always Sunny, or lime juice, ice and lime garnish for a Splice the Mainbrace – both perfect drinks for your guests to sip on a Cornish summer’s day. mainbracerum.com

ZERO HEROES Not drinking? Not a problem. Alcohol-free alternatives have got a lot more grown-up so you can put down the warm lemonade and indulge in a seriously stylish switch-up of your top tipple.

Alternative to: Gin and tonic A delicious alternative to clear spirits, Pentire celebrates the rare botanicals that thrive on Cornwall’s north coast while offering non-drinking guests exceptional liquid refreshment. Crisp, fresh and herbaceous, Pentire Adrift embraces the likes of rock samphire, sage, citrus and Cornish sea salt, as well as Pentire’s own plant blend, to create a refreshing spirit, which pairs perfectly with a light tonic and lemon garnish. For something a little zestier, try Pentire Seaward – an invigorating blend of pink grapefruit, wild seaweed, woodruff, sea buckthorn and sea rosemary. Serve with a light tonic or soda with ice and a grapefruit wedge for a zingy summer delight. pentiredrinks.com

Alternative to: Sparkling While creative alcohol-free options are a common feature at modern weddings, it can be tricky to replicate the toast without raising a glass of fizz. That’s where Saicho’s sparkling teas come in. Designed to be served chilled in a champagne flute or coupe, the innovative Darjeeling, Jasmine and Hojicha teas are cold-brewed to extract the most delicate and complex flavours from the tea leaves, then finely balanced with a hint of sweetness and a dash of acidity. As a finishing touch, sparkling the tea enhances the flavour and creates those all-important bubbles to be enjoyed as an alternative to champagne or Prosecco. saichodrinks.com

Alternative to: Aperol Spritz Tasking itself with “reinventing the spritz”, Wilfred’s aperitif creates a refreshing non-alcoholic alternative to an Aperol Spritz. Inspired by traditional methods and free from artificial flavours, sweeteners and colours, the carefully crafted aperitif combines the fresh taste of bitter oranges with natural rosemary, rhubarb and clove. Evoking the summery vibes of sitting al fresco in an Italian piazza, serve with tonic water, ice and a slice of orange and delight in the citrusy and irresistibly delicious flavours of a drink that’s all spritz and no alcohol. wilfredsdrinks.com

Alternative to: Wine Perfect light drinks for a summer’s day, the range of cordials from Jukes Cordialities has been created by renowned wine taster and writer, Matthew Jukes. Created to mix with still or sparkling water (depending on how you usually like your wine!), these non-alcoholic drinks “do everything that wine does on the nose, palate and finish but without any grapes or alcohol involved”. The collection includes a white (Jukes 1 – built on peach blossom, cucumber, plums, tart apples and pineapple husk); a bright red (Jukes 2 – with layered red fruit flavours and a faint smokiness) and our personal favourite, a rosé (Jukes 8 – based on melon, pomegranate, pear, rhubarb and apple) – a delicate and elegant summery treat for your taste buds! jukescordialities.com

We think her individually created conch shell mini planters (right; available with or without cacti or succulents and in four different shades: white, coade, blue and coral) are the most adorable way to say thank you to your guests while extending a beach or botanical theme. Scatter them across your tabletops or create a focal favour table with a cool coast-meets-country vibe. rusticrosecornwall.com

CANDLELIT ROMANCE Lovingly handmade artisan candles that arrive with a book is a winning formula as far as we’re concerned. Wax & Words’ traditionally made vegan soy candles showcase wording and poetry written in-house by maker Sarah Moloney to ensure a gift full of personal poignancy. The intoxicating mix of heavenly scent, soft light and inspired words can be used to enhance your venue’s ambience as well as a generous gift for your guests. We love the Everlasting Love Candle, a gorgeous floral bouquet of bluebells, hyacinth, galbanum, rose and jasmine, or select something from the Cornish Collection to evoke a special place such as the earthy basil and zesty lemon notes of the Kynance Cove Beach Candle. Each candle is poured into a reusable black matt jar and presented in a linen cloth bag alongside a recycled novel, after all – what could be better than snuggling up to a classic, candlelit piece of literature? Alternatively, the natural soy wax melts are completely biodegradable and packaged in recyclable material. Anything from the vibrant fruity notes of Ruby to the apple, blackcurrant, birch and bergamot blend of To Love By The Moon will prove an aromatically apt addition to your day. waxandwordscornwall.co.uk

EDIBLE DELIGHTS You can’t go wrong with gifting your guests a sweet something, and Red Robin Pantry’s patisserie and confectionery is just the delectable thing. Creating a range of chocolates, cake jars, gourmet marshmallows and macarons in a dizzying array of flavours (and with vegan and vegetarian options also available), every creation is designed to look and taste utterly divine. If the image of a rainbow of macarons, light-as-air marshmallows, glistening truffles and sumptuous sponge doesn’t whet your appetite, then the extensive flavour list should get you salivating. Red wine velvet, lime and coconut, strawberry and Prosecco, gin and elderflower, salted caramel, and green tea, pistachio and rose water are just a few of the fabulous tastes on offer. There are options aplenty depending on how unique you want to go. Truffles and marshmallows are presented in their own mini box with an assortment of lid colours and finished with a signature gold robin wax seal, which can be further personalised with a custom engraved monogram wax seal. Or you might prefer a sweetie table or luxury pick-n-mix bag featuring the likes of chocolate-dipped marzipans, nut dragées, pralines, bonbons, snowies, jazzies and hot chocolate bombs. And if you’d like a gift for loved ones who couldn’t be with you on the day, Red Robin’s postal wedding cake boxes provide a sweetly thoughtful gesture. redrobinpantry.co.uk

“Is the field flat enough to erect a marquee or tipi?” asks Jenny. “If the ground is uneven, some marquee companies can provide a hard wooden floor to level it out instead of coconut matting; however, this can come at a substantial extra cost.” You’ll also need to establish whether there’s a power and water connection. “If not, both can be brought in but there will be a cost associated with that. Is there good vehicle access for the suppliers and guests? Is there plenty of parking? Is there room for toilets if they need to be hired in? Think about where these will go,” she continues. “Is the field private? If it’s on a walking path, it could get busy with passers-by on a summer’s day,” says Jenny of how minor concerns can become big inconveniences if not afforded their due diligence in advance. “And how long is the hire period? Often marquee companies will want to set up a few days before the wedding, which gives you time for all the deliveries, such as furniture, kitchen equipment, and time to dress it,” she adds of the host of questions you should be asking yourself and your suppliers.

As you may be starting to realise, planning an outdoor wedding involves much more than picking a site and pitching a tent. “You’ll need a budget for furniture and possibly toilets and generators as well,” says wedding stylist Nikki Sheriff from Knots & Kisses (knotsandkisses.co.uk). Sam reels off the extensive list. “Toilets, showers, water, and electricity: the not-so-glamorous areas, but absolutely essential for ensuring that your day goes without a hitch! Whether you’re using your own contacts or booking these through your supplier then you need to know how much power everything needs. Think about who will be using electricity on the day, as you need to ensure that your generator has enough capacity. If you’re linking up on-site you need to ensure that there is enough supply to cover catering, bands, lighting, etc. Once a floor plan is established, also have a think about where you will want power points.”

pizzas and waffles all cooked to order. Guests could have whatever they liked, whenever they liked!” says Jenny. “Sweet drinks in the sunshine can attract insects, so light some citronella candles around your drinks reception table to keep them away,” she advises. “How about ice lollies instead of canapés, which could be handmade with frozen edible flowers? Drinks dispensers are great as they allow people to refill their drinks as much as they like, encouraging them to keep hydrated. Ensure you fill some with water and not just booze!”

After the after-party Don’t forget to plan for the big pack away. “If your outdoor wedding is not at a venue, think about who will take care of the clean-up the day after,” implores Jenny. “The last thing you and your partner want to be doing the day after is cleaning up beer bottles, so hire someone to do this, or if you have a planner they could take care of it. Also speak with your caterer and bar company to check if they take away their rubbish and recycling. If you’re having a marquee, the company will expect it empty of rubbish when they come to collect, which includes flower installations too.” So long as you leave no stone unturned and come up with plenty of workable Photography Thomas Frost

Lucky dips These are easy to make with an old box and shredded paper or sawdust – include some cute prizes and you can guarantee to elicit much excitement from little hands! Perhaps your youngest guests could choose a lucky dip prize as a reward if they do something well during the day, like staying quiet and listening during the ceremony, or it could be a winning prize for a child who makes a wonderful craft in one of the tents. Best to have enough for every child though!

Baking station We love the idea of organising a cake-making station – manned by an adult of course! Children could prepare biscuits by rolling and cookie-cutting some ready-made dough (to be cooked later). Biscuits or cupcakes could be decorated using icing, sprinkles, and sweeties, or perhaps you could decorate pizzas, to be cooked later outside, if the venue and timescales allow.

Mobile petting zoo This could be just the thing to keep your little guests amused in any downtime during your day. Depending on your space and budget, you can hire most animals from small and furry chicks and rabbits to goats, pigs and even ponies and alpacas. Children can be helped to hold and pet the animals and you may even be able to organise some pony rides, should your petting zoo offer this, too. Whatever activities you choose for your guests, young and old, make sure you take a leaf out of any child’s book, and focus on the fun!

LET THE MUSIC PLAY

If music be the food of love… You don’t need to have a Shakespeare-themed wedding to appreciate that music and love are intertwined. Indeed, so many of the greatest songs ever written have love at their heart. So, on your wedding day – a day filled with joy and emotion – music can be at the heart of each step. Music can fill spaces when people are arriving or leaving, create an atmosphere in an instant, make us howl with laughter or shed a tear, as well as help to sum you up as a couple and set the mood and tone for the rest of the day. As music is so personal, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. So here are some musical ideas for your wedding day, whatever shape and size it may take…

Getting ready If you’re getting ready with friends, music can play a significant part in your preparations. A get-together with the girls or boys could open up the potential for some tunes to reminisce to, perhaps from your childhood, or school or college days, depending on how long you’ve known each other. Choose songs that remind you of each other, of fun times and memories made. If you have the time, you could always set the music to images to create a nostalgic video montage.

Prelude (as your guests arrive) Gentle background music can create a lovely atmosphere as your guests eagerly arrive for your wedding. As anticipation and nerves are usually running high at this stage, something calming and mellow is usually a good fit rather than anything too loud or boisterous. Traditionally, string quartets are used as a serene soundtrack to welcome guests.

The processional (bride’s arrival) Depending on the style and theme of the day, entrances can vary from traditional, such as ‘Pachelbel’s Canon’, ‘Bridal Chorus’ or ‘Ave Maria’, to something more contemporary. However, it’s important to take your pace into consideration. You don’t want to be galloping down the aisle, or likewise if you choose anything too slow, you might struggle to find your groove. If you’ve got your heart set on a favourite tune but it’s just too fast, consider a slowed-down or acoustic version. Well-known retro or contemporary love songs that your guests will likely know and love often make for a tear-jerking entrance for a bride.

Recessional (leaving your ceremony) These are the songs typically played as you make your way back down the aisle from your ceremony (or however you choose to leave). This is the time to up

the tempo should you want to – think joyous, bursting with excitement and love-filled. We’ve witnessed many a bride and groom boogie their way back down the aisle, impromptu-style, because the music and the atmosphere were just too much to resist! This can also be a chance to get creative with your sound. Who can forget the gospel choir singing ‘All You Need Is Love’ in the film ‘Love Actually’ complete with strings, brass, and an electric guitar solo? Other film-based choices include ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’

from ‘Toy Story’; Frank Sinatra’s It Had to Be You’ from ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and ‘We Go Together’ from Grease.

Reception Entering your reception as newly-weds is a wonderful moment when you won’t be able to wipe the smile off your face, so choose a tune to reflect this feeling. Uptempo songs to reflect your togetherness and happiness always work well, or you might choose to add humour with perhaps a film soundtrack if one of you is a fan of a particular film. We’ve seen couples recently enter to the ‘Match of the Day’ theme tune, and ‘The Eye of the Tiger’. True champs! If you haven’t seen the ‘Say A Little Prayer’ scene from ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’, you need to check it out. An entire restaurant bursting into song is one of our greatest weddingrelated musical loves, and there’s no reason you can’t encourage your guests to do a group singalong. You could always organise this as a surprise for your other half if they have a penchant for karaoke-style moments!

First dance This is often the big one. Whether your first dance encompasses just the newly-weds, or your entire wedding party pile on to the dance floor and get things started, there are numerous musical ways to kick off the dancing. Swaying to a love song is an obvious win for the couple, although if you want to forego anything slow, consider opting for a choreographed first dance with a routine from one of your favourite movies or dance videos. Flash mobs are also an option if you want to launch straight in and get people foot-tapping and itching to dance right away. If you opt for a traditional, slow first dance, once it draws to a close, good

DJs will be able to seamlessly blend a floor-filler in for the rest of your guests, so they can step onto the dance floor to join you.

Party DJs will take the strain away from you having to spend weeks thinking of your all-time favourite tunes to fill three hours of party time. Most wedding DJs will be able to collate a playlist you didn’t know you loved with just a few simple pointers in the right direction. Bands are another option for dancing the night away. Covers bands for hardcore fans can work well, whether it’s a surprise for guests or your other half, and can usually put together a bespoke package based on songs you love.

Finale Whether it’s your whole party exiting a forest glade at sunset or just the two of you roaring off in an MG or old banger to the clatter of tin cans tied to the back, leaving your wedding offers an opportunity for a soundtrack that sums up the mood of the day. Leaving guests both desperate for more and full of fond memories, you might opt for anthemic, celebratory music as fireworks fill the sky, or create a festival feel with a headlinerworthy tune played by a live band amidst a carnival of tea lights. For a more mellow vibe, an acoustic band could follow you from the venue to the carriages. Whatever your favoured style of music, let your imagination rule when it comes to the sound of your big day. Think about the feeling you’re trying to create – look to your favourite films, music videos, books and archives for inspiration – and go with whatever you love the sound of!

With the ever-changing Covid situation and its constant climate of uncertainty, couples have been catapulted between extremes of emotion like hope and despair, sorrow and joy, which has a draining impact individually and on their relationship. “It’s been testing on a personal level for us,” admits Morwenna. “As a couple, we’ve coped well but there’s definitely been a frequent stressor hanging over us. The worst bit is knowing that our moment of happiness could be ripped away at any second.” So what is the best way to deal with the sense of overwhelm and myriad moods you may find yourself in? “The most important thing in terms of your relationship with your partner is to acknowledge the situation and allow yourself to express whatever feelings it brings up,” advises Dr Ben-Ari. “Really listen to them and validate their point of view. You don’t have to agree with them, but the act of acknowledging the situation from their perspective and telling them that they make sense, may offer them the support they need.” As Jemma wisely counsels: “Talk to your partner – talk, talk, talk – and make sure neither of you are feeling unheard. As the prospect of having to change our plans rapidly came into view, we were both very open about what we wanted and how we should proceed,” she says. “The openness of our communication and how we easily agreed on the same plan showed how well we know each other. Going through all this with Tom has only reaffirmed how good we are together.” Dr Ben-Ari encourages couples facing adversity to be as communicative and as flexible as possible with each other, their ideas and – most importantly – their approach. “Put your energy and awareness into the areas where you do have control: how you relate to each other, how you support each other, how you can create connection and intimacy, how you raise each other up,” she says. “Try to change your mindset to lightness and a sense of humour, and look for the positives – you now have time to plan more little details for your special day. Maybe

make a fun movie about both of you to screen at the wedding or learn an impressive first dance to perform in front of your guests. See the extra time as an opportunity to be super creative.”

Look after yourself Don’t forget that self-care is just as important as supporting one another, and it starts with an awareness of your own voice before sounding it out. “It’s important to acknowledge your inner dialogue,” says Dr Ben-Ari. “The nervous system reacts in different ways to particular thoughts. Your inner voice might be telling you: ‘This

If you’re newly engaged and don’t know what to do, start looking around at your options. Just have it in the back of your mind that things could change. Have a Plan B date pencilled in until things become more settled and plan that ‘shadow’ wedding as thoroughly as you will with the first date, just in case. Morwenna

is a disaster and I don’t know how to handle this,’ or: ‘This is not what I wanted, but I’m pleased that we have more time to plan.’ It’s easy to feel like you don’t have any control over what’s happened as a result of the pandemic, but you have the power to control your reaction and change your mindset.”

I think the bottom line with this is that you have to make the decisions together as a couple. Don’t let anyone say you should be

of coping mechanism than yours,” cautions Dr Ben-Ari. “Some cope by distracting themselves from the issue, distancing themselves or withdrawing completely. Reach out with tenderness, compassion and love, and express yourself and what you need to feel supported non-judgementally, safely and openly.” She suggests telling your partner how you’re feeling using positive words. For example, instead of saying: “You don’t understand me,” say: “I feel upset and lonely today. I need to tell you how I’m feeling, and it will be helpful if you can just listen.” As we all know, life and loss can go hand in hand, and whether it’s a minor loss

If you’re struggling with postponements, take that time away from your phone, and have a good cry, a takeaway and spend time with your partner. Ultimately, that’s what it’s all about anyway. Take the time to heal away from prying eyes and then power on like the strong person you are. Morwenna

like the live band you’d set your heart on or a major one like the sudden death of a beloved, each prompts us to see everything exactly as it is and to allow space for our grief and gratitude in equal measure. “You will get married, even if it is not at the time you had originally planned or wanted, and you have the rest of your lives to enjoy being married,” says Dr Ben-Ari. Think about the things in your life that make you feel grateful. Make a list, and every day add

INTO THE BLUE

Lisa and Jonny’s sea-themed celebration combined the couple’s sense of style in the breathtaking beach locale of Lusty Glaze Lisa and Jonny became an item during a trip to Thailand with mutual friends in their university days. “It was an amazing place to meet someone!” recalls Lisa. Following a similarly exotic tone, Jonny proposed on Lisa’s 30th birthday on a jetty by a river in Spain. “Lisa was oblivious, but I’d been stressed the whole holiday as the ring hadn’t arrived in time, and I could only find a stand-in from a nearby gift shop!” reveals Jonny. “The real ring was blue Cornish sea glass with diamonds and it turned up a few days later, so we took an engagement photo then!” Continuing the sea theme for their wedding, the pair planned a beach party at Lusty Glaze, with ocean-inspired décor to match. Ocean-coloured bridesmaid skirts, blue and white florals, mussel shell illustrations on the stationery and varnished mussel shells on the cake all contributed to the beautiful coastal design. Adopting a casual dress code to reflect the laid-back vibe, Lisa wore a white lace top and tulle skirt accessorised with white flip-flops and a floral crown. The groomsmen echoed the mood, donning navy suits with the trousers tailored into shorts alongside white Havaianas flip-flops. “Jonny wore a waistcoat too, to distinguish himself from his twin brother!” adds Lisa. Graphic designer and illustrator Lisa created the wedding stationery, which featured mussel shells and hand lettering on the invitations, table plan and place cards. The botanicals were another key element in carrying the theme, with lisianthus, cornflowers, sea holly and silver dust leaves all woven into Lisa’s bouquet. “We were so lucky with the weather – we woke up to beautiful blue skies,” says Lisa. They made the most of the sunshine in the morning, embarking on separate activities with their bridesmaids and groomsmen. “Jonny did Trelissick Parkrun whilst my bridesmaids and I had a swim in the sea at Lusty Glaze,” says Lisa. After exchanging their vows, a beach barbecue of burgers, salad, and vegetable and halloumi skewers was served ahead of the speeches and evening reception. Guests were later treated to pasties and cake: a three-tier semi-naked showstopper with chocolate, coffee and carrot layers adorned with mussel shells, berries and foliage to match Lisa’s bouquet. “Despite the waistcoat, there was still a lot of confusion with my identical twin,” says Jonny when asked about memorable moments from their day. “Several guests, the photographer and the videographer kept mistaking him for me!” Despite the issue of mistaken identity, Lisa’s lasting memory of their wedding is “dancing with all our friends and family in the evening, feeling elated and a bit relieved that we’d done it, and that the day had gone so well!” they say. And when it comes to words of wisdom, budget, she says, is one of the main factors to consider. “We had a spreadsheet with all the costs and tried to pay things off bit by bit where we could.”

WINTER’S TALE

Kilts, bagpipes, Gothic dress and a giant sword all made an appearance at Sharon and Austen’s folklore-inspired festivities as they celebrated their love in spellbindingly unique style “Sharon and I met when we both studied at Falmouth Art School,” says Austen of their first encounter. “Despite being friends, we lost touch when we left art school and it was not until we met up 20 or so years later that we came to where we are now.” Austen planned to propose on several occasions during a long weekend away, but he was interrupted at every turn. “We went to Bovey Castle but the lady on the table next to us kept asking us questions, so this wasn’t the right time,” he reveals. “We went to Warwick Castle, got wrapped up in the history and a lot of tourists – also not the right time. We went out to an Indian restaurant in Nottingham but met old friends, got talking and the evening escaped us. In the end, I proposed on Bodmin Moor on our journey home… To hell with the right time, it was the right lady!” Taking an inspired Celtic/Gothic theme, the couple’s winter wedding was full of personality-packed details, including kilts, a bagpiper, harpist, an optional gothic dress code, antlers and a giant two-handed sword. “Sharon is Cornish and my family has a rich Scottish history,” explains Austen. “We wanted to have a wedding that embraced a combination of both of our heritages and had the feeling of stepping into another world full of folklore and history. Lots of our influence came from ‘Game of Thrones’ and Tolkien, and jewel colours were used to embrace the feeling of the season.” Proceedings began when Mári the piper summoned guests toward the great hall. The bride was then piped into the ceremony that included a reading by one of the bridesmaids from one of Terry Pratchett’s books. The wedding breakfast was a mouth-watering mix of sweet potato and roasted pepper soup, smoked salmon parcels, oven roast chicken breast, pork and apricot terrine, and herb-crust cod, finished with dark chocolate profiteroles and sticky toffee pudding. “We had guests from all over Europe and one good friend David had purchased himself a ‘kilt from Scotland’,” says Austen of a memorable incident. “But it looked a bit too flowing and long. Upon inspection – and unbeknown to him – he had purchased a skirt from Scotland with a tartan pattern, but wore it with confidence,” he laughs. He also recounts how close his dad was to not being able to attend the wedding, and how cherished his presence was on the day. “Just a few weeks prior, he was rushed to hospital with sepsis. Dad has a love for bagpipes and dancing, and despite being on death’s door just weeks before, he was one of the first up on the dance floor!” smiles Austen. “Mári played a private song to him and mum, which brought a tear to a very hardened man’s eye.” When asked to pinpoint his personal highlight, he says: “There are too many to mention one; everything worked so well.” But he is able to share one of his and Sharon’s most memorable recollections. “For both of us, seeing everyone happy, having fun and enjoying our day was definitely a favourite moment,” he reminisces. “Talk to your vendors, source them early and be creative with them. Trust them and don’t dictate to them,” says Austen when asked to offer his advice for other couples. “Together you will plan and create the perfect day for you and your guests.”

KISS THE RAIN

Catherine and Cain’s elopement turned into a family day of fun, good food and wild adventure on Cornwall’s north coast “We met at a friend’s wedding,” says Catherine. “I knew Cain was the man I wanted to spend the rest of my life with when we started chatting about The Archers; he just feels like home.” Cain proposed on World Tequila Day while he and Catherine were sitting on their balcony drinking frozen margaritas. “He was so shaky and nervous,” recalls Catherine. “’Come What May’ was playing in the background; it couldn’t have been more perfect!” The couple decided to marry at The Green with just one other person present: Catherine’s son, Albert. “The whole world was falling to pieces and we knew we wanted to get married,” explains Cain. “Finding a venue was tricky because of the shifting sands around what was and was not allowed under Covid. We wanted a beautiful venue near the sea and The Green made the whole process a dream from start to finish.” Rather than choosing a theme for the day, the couple embraced their personal likes while tying the details together by all donning something in a shade of dusty rose pink. The wedding day began with breakfast and jigsaw puzzling with Albert whilst Catherine’s hair and make-up was done. Cain headed to the wedding barn to await his bride, who appeared looking stunning for their noon ceremony. “Then it was a race against the sunset as we set off on an adventure around Cornwall!” she says. “We went to the moors where Tom took one of my favourite photos of Cain spinning me round in his arms in the pouring rain,” reminisces Catherine. The newly-weds then headed to a forest for a “magical and wonderfully atmospheric” shoot ahead of a trip to the beach at sunset. Heading back to The Green for hot baths, the trio slipped into their pyjamas for a wedding feast of garlic mushrooms, pork terrine, duck and steak, and then one of Albert’s fondest moments: ice cream and wedding cake! “Albert had full control over this and went for a double chocolate salted caramel cake,” giggles Catherine. “It was incredible!” Looking back, Catherine cites Cain’s vows and Albert’s “heartbreaking” reading of ‘That Still and Settled Place’ by Edward Monkton as her most treasured highlights. “Dancing on the beach with Cain is another special memory for me, and Albert running around with the waves crashing on the sand,” she adds. Meanwhile, Cain picks just one standout memory. “It was the moment just after the calmness of being alone in the barn when ‘Simply the Best’ by Noah Reid started playing,” he smiles. “In that moment I knew that Catherine was about to walk up behind me and change my life forever.” Although their first wedding date had to be cancelled due to the November lockdown, the couple are grateful in retrospect. “We managed to reschedule for exactly a week before Christmas Day,” says Catherine. “It was a really perfect way to end 2020.” She also emphasises the importance of focusing on “what you really want. We would have loved to have a big party with all our amazing friends, but ultimately getting married was what was most important,” she says. “By far the best advice we can give is to choose a photographer you have a connection with,” she continues. “The photos we have are so important for our friends and family who weren’t there, but above all they are so precious to us.”

FAMILY AFFAIR

Anna and Ben treated their guests to a three-day extravaganza of topnotch food and entertainment at the family farm “We met in Manor House Warehouses in London – a communal living set-up where old warehouses have been converted into creative spaces to live,” says Anna of her first fortuitous encounter with Ben. Their love story continued in the same adventurous vein when Ben proposed along the Yarra River in Melbourne, paving the way for a picturesque and fun-filled wedding day at Anna’s mum’s farm and wedding venue, Trenderway. Nestled between Polperro and Looe on Cornwall’s picturesque south coast, the 200-year-old restored stone barn provided the celebratory space for the couple and their guests – a global gathering of family and friends from the far-flung realms of Australia, Israel and the US, who all congregated to enjoy three days of celebrations. “We didn’t have a theme as such, just a beautiful location that set the perfect tone,” says Anna. The naturally rustic backdrop was adorned with eye-catching floristry both indoors and out, encouraging guests to roam between spaces and make the most of the venue in its spellbinding entirety. A glamping field dotted with bell tents was set up for the duration of the event, and the Friday evening welcomed the first arrivals with a barbecue that perfectly primed the party mood of the weekend. The following day Anna and Ben staged an outdoor ceremony – “the most special moment” says Anna, who stunned in an off-theshoulder lace gown. Ben’s outfit comprised a green three-piece suit, brogues and orange-gold tie, while the bridesmaids wore mismatched blue-green frocks. The groomsmen completed the look with dapper blue waistcoats and sand-coloured chinos. Drinks and nibbles were devoured post-ceremony, as guests played lawn games in the sunshine ahead of a buffet lunch and “the most incredible cocktails made by my brother Tom!” recalls Anna. Moving freely between the banquet table and indoor chill-out zone complete with pouffes and sheepskin-covered sofas, and the outside area featuring festoon lighting, hay bales and chairs, everyone enjoyed the variety of stylish scenes on offer. An electric mix of a live circus act-style performance, magician, open bar and DJ set provided the unforgettable evening of entertainment as the culinary delights continued with the cake: a fabulous macaron tower. The Sunday presented another feast in the form of an incredible ‘Melbourne brunch’ as guests continued the festivities. Looking back, Anna offers busily planning couples just one top tip on how to best organise your wedding: “Get your mum involved!” She is also keen to highlight the importance of a collaborative effort and embracing help – both emotional and organisational – from those closest to you. “My sister Ella and my brother Tom were the biggest support throughout the whole event,” she says.

MELLOW YELLOW

Giving themselves just three months from engagement to wedding day, Holly and Dan created a beautiful celebration overlooking the ocean “We met via the dating app, Bumble,” laughs Holly. “After a couple of messages, we met up in a pub halfway between us for our first date… and the rest is history!” Picking a Dorset beach as the poignant place for his summer proposal, Dan popped the question where Holly spent many a childhood holiday with her nan and sisters, “so it had a lovely nostalgic feeling to it,” she explains. “We didn’t want a long engagement so got on with planning the big day for the same year.” The Driftwood Spars was the venue of choice for their autumn wedding. “It’s a really old, Cornish inn with a lovely, chilled vibe, beautiful sea views and awesome staff,” says Holly. Picking a warm yellow palette spliced with seasonal tones, a mix of fresh and dried flowers created a harvest-inspired aesthetic. The scene beautifully mirrored the time of year as well as Holly’s favourite colour. “My engagement ring is actually a yellow sapphire,” she reveals. Arriving on the Friday evening to relax into the weekend, the weather took a wild turn courtesy of Storm Alex, “so we all hunkered down in Driftwood’s pub and got merry,” giggles Holly. The next morning Holly slipped into her gorgeous Savannah Miller dress while Dan was a vision of dapper style in a navy blue wool suit, mustard yellow tie and brown brogues. Suitably attired, Holly made her grand entrance toward her beau, which provided her with her most treasured memory from their day. “My favourite moment was walking into the ceremony room and seeing all the beautiful decorations, smiling guests and Dan’s face at the end of the aisle,” she reminisces. The skies then cleared to allow them to head to the beach for photos, presenting Dan with his personal highlight of the day. The locally sourced feast featured crab, pulled pork and halloumi for starters followed by catch of the day, beef brisket and gnocchi for mains. A barrel of ‘Lou’s Brew’ proved to be another crowdpleaser alongside a naked wedding cake featuring lemon and salted caramel flavours. Unfortunately, a tightening in Covid restrictions that prohibited singing indoors meant that their planned entertainment couldn’t take place. “We had also booked surfing lessons for us and our guests the morning after, but due to the storm, the sea was too choppy, so this was cancelled – a shame as it would have been a great hangover cure!” reflects Holly. But despite these hitches, she’s adamant that couples should focus on executing their day, their way. “It’s easy to get bogged down with trying to please or keep people happy leading up to the wedding,” she concedes while looking back. “Our advice would be to do exactly what you want. You’ll never be able to please everyone so just focus on yourselves.”

INTO MY ARMS

It was a midsummer night’s dream for Rosanna and John, whose gorgeous wedding blended homespun details with the colours of a Marazion sunset “We worked together on a photo shoot in Falmouth and then went Lindy Hop dancing,” says Rosanna of her first introduction to John. “We wanted to dance together but got immediately split up and ended up dancing with everyone else in the room – I was so gutted! We then made a more official date for the following week and thankfully got that dance in!” It was the morning of Rosanna’s 30th birthday when John popped the question. “He made pancakes and gave me a little jar of sand from our favourite beach on the Isles of Scilly. He told me to open it and the most beautiful ring by Justin Duance sat there at the top: John had taken a sneaky visit to the Scillies to collect the sand and had the ring cast with it.” Their cloud nine love story continued with their choice of venue, the subtropical paradise of Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens. It was an idyllic backdrop for their “Midsummer Night’s Dream meets romantic wild garden” wedding with a dreamy colour scheme of peach, pink, pale turquoise and lemon, chosen to reflect a Marazion sunset. “We wanted our day to represent us and all our favourite people and things,” explains Rosanna. The ceremony took place in the spectacular setting of the Skyspace in the company of immediate family. Exchanging their self-penned vows as the sun came out. Rosanna’s brother played guitar to the tune of ‘It’s a Wonderful World’ as she and John were officially wed. “Then the rest of our guests joined for a blessing and hand-tying ceremony on the balcony above overlooking the bay,” she says. The day had a homespun feel, with most elements handmade or individually sourced by the couple and their creative friends, such as the dried roses and lavender on the table settings, the stationery design by Rosanna’s mum, and their friends foiling their names for the invitations. Rosanna’s parents provided the ‘something old’ for her day, with a lace trim from her mother’s veil reworked to create Rosanna’s, and her dad surprising her with vintage wedding cars, giving her an incredibly special entrance that she cites as a standout moment. “I also loved the vase of flowers in the ceremony from the garden of my childhood home, and the amazing flower chandeliers in the marquee,” she adds. A drinks reception complete with fresh strawberries and a swing-style soundtrack provided by Rosanna’s brother’s band was followed by a vegetarian wedding breakfast filled with the couple’s favourite flavours. Guests tucked into the moreish likes of chilli and mint falafels, marinated crispy smoked tofu, and double chocolate brownie with passion fruit sauce and coconut sorbet ahead of an evening featuring an eco glitter bar, dancing and more food. “John surprised me by singing Nick Cave’s ‘Into My Arms’ to me with the band,” reminisces Rosanna. “This was not expected and was the most romantic moment of my life!” Fuelled by a late feast of pasties and cupcakes, guests continued partying until sending off the newly-weds with a corridor of sparklers. Reflecting on her dream day, Rosanna has wise words for couples in the midst of planning their own: “Prioritise the elements that mean the most to you and remember you can’t control everything”.

NOTES ON A WEDDING Encha nted Br ide

The shoe game. Based on the TV show ‘Mr & Mrs’, the newly-weds sit back-toback on chairs each holding one of their shoes and one of their partner’s. They are then asked questions about love and life, and each time they have to raise the shoe that best fits with the question such as ‘Who is the messiest?’. It’s lighthearted fun and everyone will enjoy watching. Jessica

The race is on. Challenge guests to compete in comedy races and games such as an egg and spoon race, sack race and hook the duck. Create a leaderboard (and ideally get a best man to facilitate!). Rebecca Start early. If you’re hosting a weekend wedding, start introducing your guests in advance of the big day by hosting a match the afternoon before. You could play a friendly game of cricket or rounders (although probably best to avoid the contact sports!). Jessica

Say cheese. Adding a disposable or Polaroid camera to each table is always a good icebreaker. Guests can take images of themselves and their table – or you can even print out a list of funny ‘try-to-get’ images. Rebecca Games galore. You can’t go wrong with traditional garden games, or even hire a mini golf set, badminton, a coconut shy or table football. They are a perfect pairing to an afternoon drinks reception. Jessica

Scavenger hunt. Make the most of your venue’s grounds by hosting a scavenger hunt. Plant the clues or the treasure, making it personal to the couple, then choose between people doing it individually, or perhaps teaming up with others on their table! Jessica

Get quizzical. Print a quiz for your guests, with questions about you as a couple, which will encourage guests to

chat and try to find out the answers. You could even add an extra incentive for guests to mingle by adding clues such as “Richard on Table 4 will know the answer to the question about the groom and the three-legged horse!” Jessica Instant laughter. Create an Instagram challenge where you ask guests to create the best images from your wedding such as the best comedy situation, some group laughter, a lone dancer, or a beautiful floral shot. It will get them thinking creatively and you’ll also end up with some gorgeous images to boot. Rebecca Picture this. Get creative with a photo booth and make an elaborate backdrop personal to you as a couple and the aesthetic of your wedding, perhaps something colourful with lots of props, a celestial-themed moon and star backdrop, or a picture from your favourite holiday together. Jessica It’s a hit! Piñatas are a super-fun activity where you can get as many people involved as you want – plus, it’s comical for those who are just watching too! Rebecca Music to our ears. Nothing creates a great atmosphere quite like live music. Have a charismatic roaming trio during the drinks reception, a sitar player or a brass band playing modern tunes that works the room and entice everyone to join them in a trailing conga line! Jessica All in this together. Instead of a potentially awkward first dance, get the entire wedding party on the dance floor together via an announcement by your MC or the band’s frontman. Nothing breaks the ice like 100 people twirling around the floor, trying out a new dance at the same time! Jessica Who dares wins. Create a collection of wedding dares for each table to try to achieve throughout the dinner.
