Standard 4 x 8 panels are used vertically with the wainscoat- ing placed horizontally; the unusual design effect is achieved by vertical V-grooves, carried through from floor to ceiling.

ln all cases, one basic rule app.lies: start at the openings with vertical joints and divide the plain wall spaces in an orderly pattern, as in detail A and C. Place vertical foints at each side of top and bottom of window and at top of door openings, as in detail A, C, E, and C. lf the width of the door or window opening is over four

feet, however, do not hesitate to place the panels horizontally as in detail E-for combinations of vertical and horizontal arrangements may be used in the same room 'with pleasing effect. Nine and ten foot lengths are available to assist in solving special problems.

The most satisfactory method of applying special patterns (or patterns made up of small panels) isto sheath with 5/16" or 3/8" Plyscord placed horizontally and apply the finish panels as desired.

Joins Ffue Prcvention Campaign

San Francisco, July l-The American Red Cross will join in the nation-wide forest fire prevention campaign to call public attention to the seriousness of the fire problems and enlist its cooperation in preventing forest, watershed and range fires, according to joint announcement by S. B. Show, Federal regional forester in San Francisco, and DeWitt Nelson, California state forester, Sacramento. This request for assistance, made by the U. S. Forest Service in behalf of all forest protection agencies, has been approved by the national Red Cross headquarters in Washington, D. C., as a part of its long-rang.e relief program in times of floods, epidemics, fire and other disasters.

Revised Lumber Statistics

A new edition of Statistical Summary, just compiled and issued by the Statistical Division of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association contains important revisions of previously published lumber statistics covering the period from l9D to 1944.

Estimates of current and past lumber production, shipments, new orders, unfilled orders, and gross stocks based on mill reports to the regional associations adjusted to statistics published by the Bureau of the Census are included in the publication.

Egtimated Lumber Consumption of Western Pine for Third Quarter ol 1945

Portland, Oregon, June 30.-Arr estimate of the probable consumption of lumber from the Western Pine region for the third quarter of 1915 is given in a statement issued by the Western Pine Association l.rere todal'. The statement in full is as follou,s :

Third quarter lumber requirements for the military agencies and r,r'ar industries have been scheduled by the WPB at practicallv the same rate as during the two preceding quarters. Cut-backs are expected during the quarter but their effect upon lumber needs is not yet known. Meanwhile the industry is being pressed to supply both the maximum anticipated volume of lumber for the rvar and a considerably expanded allocation for reconversion and civilian construction.

Neglect by the Government's rvar agencies of the lumber industry's urgent needs for manpower, truck tires and equipment has caused some unavoidable reduction in lumber output. Obviously the industry must either be given the rvherewithal to produce more lumber or the growing civilian demands must be permitted to accumulate until war uses for lumber taper off. Lumber isn't the only raw material in this situation. Production of steel, for example, has slumped eight per cent in the last three months and there has been a hurried scramble to revise the estimates of steel tonnage available for reconversion.

During the first quarter of this year the Western pine industry, aided by favorable weather, came very close to the all time production record for that .luarter which it made in 1944. Late in March, however, the rveather took a turn for the worse and the entire second quarter was about as wet and unfavorable for logging as any similar periocl the industry has ever experienced. During the spring many seasonal mills started operations, as usual, and the available manpower was spread so thinly that few woods crews or mills were fully manned. In some cases production would have been retarded by lack of tires and equipment anyway but nearly all operations right now could use more men to boost production. In spite of these drawbacks the second quarter production of mills in the Western pine region came within 8.3 per cent of last year. Average reduction for the entire lumber industry of the country was about 15 per cent.

Since summer weather in the pine region is nearly all favorable for logging, the principal obstacles to increased production during the third quarter are the shortages of men and tires. Cut-backs in other war industries, plus some discharges from the Army, seem likely to provide more men before the end of the qrlarter, whether the War Manporver Commission gives the help it should or not. The tire situation does not look so promising. With the coming of hot weather the old tires are failing much more rapidly and even loggers rvho have certificates cannot find tires to bu)'. lJnless the WPB takes some emergency action, like requisitioning the many hundreds of unused tires in the hands of logging trailer manufacturers, a lot of trucks v,'ill go out of service during July.

It is certain that urgent needs rvill take all of the lumber that can be sarved during the summer and also that operators will continue to get the utrq:rost production from the men and euipment they have to rvork with. Based upon general predictions and all other available informatiort, it is expected that during the third quarter of 1945 the shipments (consumption) of lumber by the Western Pine industry will approximate 1555 million feet, a reduction of 7 per cent under those of the same 1944 quarter.

In addition, fire-fighting equipment beloneing to the city was damaged to the extent of $10,000. Seven firemen rvere injured in the fire, one of them seriously.

Plans for rebuilding are under rvay and the company officials are making their headquarters at the planing mill at Second & S Streets.

I see and hear some war things that I have read nothing about. For instance, one day recently I saw a Marine with a lot of overseas ribbons on, AND HE \JI/AS WEARING A GOLD RING IN ONE EAR. People were staring at him. So was f. I wondrered. A few days later I saw a sailor, also wearing one gold ring in one ear. People were staring at it, for he was in a crowded bus. And folks whispeied to one another.

Then I was on a bus with a soldier, also wearing a single gold earring. He had overseas ribbons, and was a flyer. So I asked him.' He said he was wearing it in memory of his buddies who did not return from a fying mission. He said 74 planes went out, and only four came back, and he was on one of these. He said he had been asked to wear the memorial earring, and had accepted. I did not ask who asked him to wear it. I am still wonderitg.

Said he knew a soldier back from the pacific who was wearing one in memory of the members of his company which was almost entirely wiped out in a single day. Heard a discussion the other day of the so-called ,,VGirls" who pick u,p service men for immoral purposes. They, of course, have been a great problem in this war, with the inevitable follow-up of social diseases, and illegitimate babies. Someone spoke up and said that the Bible described such women, and quoted Proverbs 7;10-LZ, as follows: "ffer feet abide not in her house; now she is without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at any corner.',

rrave been reading ".; J.rJ interesting exchanges of correspondence recently on the subject of lumber for LendLease, all hinged on my editorial on that subject ninety days ago. Congressman Lindley Beckwith, an old friend of .mine, got copies of the editorial, and sent them to various agencies of Government, asking for facts and comment. I

previously recited hearing from my good friend, Don Campbell, of the War Production Board. The WPB disclaims any responsibility for the issuance of orders for sending lumber free to England and elsewhere for civilian use. They simply do the procuring when the orders come through. I knew that, and "?U:" in my editorial.

So the Congressman asked the War Department what they knew about it. I have a copy of their reply. They, also, disclaim any responsibility for what I complained about (and am still complaining). The War Department says that supplying Europe with lumber for civilian purposes does not fall within their jurisdiction. They add that much lumber has been used for packaging stuff for shipment, and comment that ,my editorial did not complain of that. Hell, no ! That's where most of our lurnber has been going, and that's where it belongs. \tr/hatever the Army and Navy wants to do with lumber is their own business, and I'm for them a million per cent.

So we know that ,n. ;; Jroa.r"tion Board and the Army did not issue orders to give away our much needed lumber for civilian use abroad. But we don't know who did, officially, although it's an easy guess. What we want to do is for everyone to raise so much unshirted hell about it that the first batch will be the last. Give the armed services every foot of lu.mber they ask for, to do with as they see fit. And if there is any left, give it to our needy Americans, and keep our little folks who need shelter for the new-born kids, ou.t of the black market; which is the only olace they can get lumber now.

Frank Wherritt is a lumber manufacturer who always tells it so you can understand it. To an old lumber buying friend rwho needed some lumber badly, Frank wrote as follows the other day: "Dear Friend: The CPA. the WPB, the Army, the'Navy, the Coast Guard, the Marines, and the independent military contractors have our hide stretched out and nailed to the barn door. This does not include the retailers, the railroads, the wholesalers, the expoiters, the commission men, the box factories, the creosoters, all our old friends, oLlr new friends, our prospective friends and God only knows how many enemies (in sheep's clothing) are begging, pleading, threatening, bribing, and otherwise trying to buy lumber from us.

But it was good hearing from you."

That could be used as a model letter for the many men who are so busy these days trying to explain to their lumber needing friends just why it is that they cannot sell or ship them anything. For, as Durante says in his swell radio program-"those are the conditions that prevail." ***

Guess I'll have to quit printing things in this column like the shipping of forty-one million pounds of butter to Russia. Every lumberman I have talked te since that issue came out has cursed deep, dark oaths into their beards, as they think of their own kids who seldom taste or see butter. One of our U. S. Senators said in a speech the other day on the subject of OPA that what this country needed was some first class resignations in Washington. Some of these days the cover will come off of the Lend-Lease mess, and when it does there will be a sensation. Talked at length with an American couple just back from several years in Mexico City. They could hardly believe what they discovered about our scarcities of necessities. In Mexico, they said as so many others have previously told me, nothing is scarce in the way of American products. Prices are high, but everything is there in plenty that we have trouble getting out here. They evidently get them first. The American Black Market gets next call. The little man in the street in this country, is the forgotten man. You can get everything in this country, too, if you have the.money to pay, and know where to go. But poor little Mister John Citizen !

How many of our great crop of war heroes this time will go into politics? Never before has there been so magnificent a reservoir of such men to draw from. Most of the discussions you hear of Presidential possibilities from among our warriors, fail to recall what a crop of such timber the Civil War created. When you check them over yourself, it will probably surprise you. The only one usually mentioned is General Grant. But in 1864 the Democratic party nominated for President General Geo. B. McClellan, of New Jersey, who was narrowly beaten by Abe Lincoln. Four years later the Republicans elected Grant, and did it again in 1872. Then in 1876 the Republicans elected General Rutherford B. Hayes. Four years later they elected General Garfield. In 1888 they elected General Harrison. Next they elected Majqr Wm. McKinley, a Civil War vet also, who was followed by Colonel Teddy Roosevelt, a veteran of the Spanish American war, and last of our soldier presidents. When you consider how small was the crop of able men the Civil War gave us compared with World War Two, may we not confidently expect in the next decade to see some of the great leaders of this war seeking to make history politically also? Civilian political leaders who look eagerly to the future, could see some warlike forms on the horizon if they looked closely.

Acquires Scn Diego Planing Mill

A ner,vly organized company, American Mill and Manufacturing Co., has leased rvith option to buy the San Diego Planing Mill at San Diego. Frank Evenson, general manager of American Products Inc., San Diego, heads the new company.

Frank O. Benz, manager of the San Diego Planing Mill, will be associated with the new concern and has been appointed sales manager. Jeff Crandall, superintendent of the mill, 'ivill also continue r,r,'ith the nerv firm.

Miss Frances Smith of Santa Ana, Calif., was married to Major Charles Russell Johnson II, U. S. Army Air Forces, at the Church of The Messiah, Santa Ana, July 7.

Fire Destroys Mill

A fire, which started in the sorting table, destroyed the mill of the Bear River Lumber Co. at South F'ork, Calif., on June 29. The mill had been down about a week for repairs. 2,000,000 feet of logs vvere saved. L. W. MacDonald Co. of Los Angeles is exectttive sales representative for the mill.

"ff some relief from conditions which l.rave been retarding production can be obtained, sufficient lumber can be produced to meet not only the war requirements, but all ioreseeable civilian needs as well," said Harry G' Uhl, manager, National Lumber Manufacturers Association, in a letter, dated June 23,laying before Judge Fred M' Vinson, Director of War Mobilization and Reconversion, the acute problems of the industry.

' Although requirements of the military have at all times been met and are being met, lumber production, Mr. Uhl pointed out, is currently on the decline and production this year will probably not reach thirty billion feet. Blame for this he attributed to shortages of manpower, equipment, and supplies and unrealistic OPA pricing policies. Relief can only come, he said, from the coordinated action of the several agencies to which the industry has repeatedly stated its position, and appealed to Judge Vinson for his personal efforts to bring this about.

The Lumber and Lumber Products Division of WPB understands the problem but, he added, that agency is responsible only for the production and distribution of lumber for war purposes, and can only recommen'd policies to other agencies such as the ffar Manpower Commission, Selective Service, OPA and the Army and Navy.

Interpretcrtion I to Direction Ic, Order L335

Washington, D. C., July ?-Controls over production of Douglas fir, white fir, and west coast hemlock, requiring mills to produce certain percentages of their monthly output in specific sizes, apply to all grades of these species, the War Production Board said today.

Direction 1a to the lumber order, L-335, requires mills located in Oregon and Washington, west of the crest of the Cascade Mountain Range, to manufacture at least 40 per cent of their monthly production of these species in one inch, one and one-quarter, and one and one-half inch boards, and at least 25 per cent in two-inch dimension.

While in trade practice some grades in the sizes designated are not called boards and dimension, WPB pointed out, under Interpretation 1 to Direction 1a, issued today, all grades of the three species are covered.

Celebratee 25th AnniversarY

The twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of The Celotex Corporation was celebrated June 20, 1945, at a luncheon given for Chicago employees by Bror Dahlberg, president and founder of the comPany.

Mr. Dahlberg talked briefly on the company as it used to be, its grolvth, and its future prospects. He pointed in particular to the plant expansion program in which the company is engaged in preparation for the tremendous building boom that will follow the war.

A guest of honor was 71-year-old "[Jncle Charlie" Rhodes, who is retiring as treasurer oI the company after more than two decades of service. He was presented with a gold pocket watch by his associates as a token of their friendly esteem and he responded by recalling a few outstanding incidents in his many years with the company. "IJncle Charlie" is held in exceptionally high regard by the employees of Celotex and he has also made a host of warm friends in the building industry and financial world.

President Dahlberg, who presided at the ceremonies, introduced the new treasurer, Alfred I' Schimpf. Also introduced was Vice President Carl Muench, an original founder of the company, who gave a short talk.

I note that you have been discharged and wish to return to your former occupation of building homes. I am glad to explain to you the governmental procedures under which you will have to operate. You can build only when you have secured priorities from the National Housing Agency. They issue these drawing on a pool of critical materials allocated each quarter under the Controlled Materials Plan of the War Production Board. They make these "determinations within the framework of reference after preliminary explorations channelizing construction realistically and factually, although not expeditiously instituted, focusing always on the indispensable inmigrant need." They consult with the Army, Navy, Maritime Commission, OPA, WPB, WMC, SPAM and anyone else in the neighborhood who likes to be consulted with.

You then build housing for "inmigrants"-nsf the Irish, the Armenians, or the Greeks, but just people who go from one place to another. This plan works just fine excepting that vou don't really get to build any houses because the Area Production Urgency Committee-affectionately referred to as A-PUCK-will disapprove most of the recommendations made by NHA.

So upon your return home you must find out whether you are in a War Manpower area classified as 1, 2, 3 or 4. If it is either class 1 or 2 you may get priorities to build H-l housing under Title VI or H-3 housing under Title Ii. You have a choice of Section N3 or 207 under Title II or 603 or 608 under Title VI. If it is a class 3 or 4 area you can't build Title VI under H-I but you can build H-2 or H-3 under Title II. By this time you have become a fullfledged entrepreneur and if there are inmigrants in your parts rvho are 4-F to the draft board they are still 1-A for H-2 or H-3 to the NHA, FHA, OPA, WMC, WPB and SPAM-on a modular dimensional coordination basis. This is a little confusing until you learn that H stands for hardship--and this means you !

A long while ago the WPB decided that if a man moves he be.comes eligible by certification for H-1 ; if his house burns down he becomes an H-3 case, and somewhere in

between are veterans who should be 1-A but who are really H-l or H-3 for Title VI housing. My advice, therefore, is to concentrate on building H-1 or H-3 for veterans although it is true that the last Title VI authorization, having brought the total to a mere $1,800,000,000 will soon be again exhausted-so, FHA won't be able to issue you commitments anyway.

As you know, Congress passed a law so that three million veterans could secure homes. llowever, under Title III of this act Section 501 for H-2 housing is impracticable and Section 505 is impossible. This is because construction costs today are entirely unrelated to the "FHA stabilized cost evaluation factor after straining out purely irrelevant temporary low-cost determinations." Last but not least OPA will give you such a low rental or sales price that you may lose money if you do the job although they do protect you by placing ceilings on everything except labor rates and building materials, some of which have nearly doubled in cost.

Looking back over the advice I have given you herein, I am inclined to suggest that the best thing you can do is to re-enlist in the Marine Corps-request assignment to the Far Pacific where life is far more simple and endurable. Sincerely yours,

Terrible Twenty Starts 20th Year o( Free Lectures for Home Buyers Monthly Golf Tournaments

The Terrible Twenty started its twentieth consecutive year of monthly golf tournaments at the Rolling Hills Country Club, Los Angeles, last month. It was the ZDth tournament, and Ed Bauer and Art Harfi were sPonsors for the event. The Terrible Twenty Tournaments is one of the oldest golf playing organizations in the nation.

Helmer Hoel and Frank Berger were tied for the day's honors with 69 net, and they will play off the tie at the July tournament which will be held at the Riviera Country Club.

The highlight of the day's play went to one of the Club's guests, H. A. Loftsgordon, who made a perfect three iron shot on the 3-par 14th hole for an ace, this being his first hole-in-one after playing the game regularly for the past twenty years. The other members of the foursome were "Bonnie" Bohnhoff, Curt McFadden and D. C. Essley.

President R. S. Osgood awarded the'prizes to the winning golfers for the year 1944-45. The main prize, a sterling silver trophy, three feet high and considered one of the outstanding trophies in the golfing field, presented by the Club to the best golfer of the year, went to Roy Stanton, winner of the first flight. This is a perpetual trophy. Joe Tardy, runner up in the first flight, Bob Mason, winner of the second flight, and Curt McFadden, runner up, received sterling silver bowls.

Hundreds of thousands of home seekers, planning to build when restrictions are lifted, will find help through the Home Planners' Institutes now being fostered by the National Retail Lumber Dealers Association, Washington, D. C.

More than 35,000 prospective home buyers in 138 cities have already attended these free lectures covering construction, de,coration and equipment for the home.

Home Planners' Institutes are sponsored locally by combined groups of bankers, dealers, builders, and utilities interested in the home building field. Such groups form Home Planners' Institute Committees for the purpose of providing the public with accurate information on post-war home building through the medium of a course of specially prepared authentic lectures.

Hundreds of these committees have already obtained the Manual containing over 32 lectures and other material prepared by the National Retail Lumber Dealers Association.

Over 350 Home Planners' Institutes will be functioning by September, according to H. R. Northup, secretary, National Retail Lumber Dealers Association. It has been estimated that approximately 1000 Institutes with over 300,000 people in attendance will be in operation by the end of the year.

A Demerit

Here is one that has been told in the Ozark Mountains since time began.

The visitor from the city noted with wonderment the almost countless number of children in this mountain family. Most of them, boys and girls, wore the same costume, just a gunny-sack kimona that hung from shoulders to shoes. A few older ones wore regulation clothes. So the visitor asked the father of the flock about these costumes, and he explained:

"You see, we're pore folks, an' we got to dress all them chillun economical. So we uses that gunny-sack dress fer both boys an' gals till they're eighteen years old. Then we puts pants on the boys, an' petticoats on the gals."

Just then the visitor discovered that one of the males wearing the kimono costume had a good set of whiskers, so he pointed him out and asked the old man if that one wasn't over eighteen. The old man said:

"Shore he is. Zeke, he's twenty-three. But.the reason he's still wearin' the gunny-sack is becauze he cussed at the table when t6e preacher wrrz eatin' dinner with us, an' we done sot him back seven years."

The colored preacher had taken for his text this particular Sunday the Ten Commandments. One by one he went over the list, and one by one he thundered against sinners who fractured these blessed "thou shalt nots." By the time he got through running the gauntlet of the ten, he had the entire congregation pretty well shrunk down in their seats, the condemnation of sin hanging heavy upon their minds, the fear of hell fire already fairly singeing their frightened souls. He had done a thorough job of impressing them with the number and enormity of their sins.

One tall, black brother rose when the meeting ended, and started for the door, his lips moving, his eyes turned inward, and his mind engrossed with his thoughts. As he passed through the entrance door into the sunlight beyond, the Deacon walking at his shoulder plainly heard him mutter through his teeth:

"Well, anyhow, I ain't nevah made no graven images !"

Fir Plywood Association Holds Annual Conlerence

Fir plywood, the $80,000,000 building comrnodity manufactured by 31 Pacific Northwest factories, probably will not be available to civilians until after Japan is defeated even though building restrictions may be eased sooner.

That fact is one of two all-important conditions characterizing the plywood industry today, according to reports presented to plant owners and officials at the recent

Further, as soon as more skilled workers return to logging camps and factories, production can be boosted toward the optimum of two billion feet annually, which is

The second factor--a highly favorable one-is that the 'panel makers already have developed and readied for market new supplementary products-combinations of plastics and plywood. These new alloyed materials unite the properties of both plywood and plastics in one panel ; as such, they not only constitute a new building material but will serve to "extend" timber resources of the area.

The new materials will be offered whenever material restrictions are li{ted.

Thomas B. Malarkey, vice president of M and M Wood Working Co. of Portland, Ore., and re-elected president of the industry association, answered in this way the question of how soon plywood will be back in lumber dealer stocks for sale to civilians:

"War Production Board officials tell us Army and Navy demands for fir plywood to build military structures in the Pacific and as crating for the war goods make it the most critical of all materials. Accordingly, fir plywood will continue to be allocated.and be available only to the military or to those industries supplying war needs.

"We are prepared to carry on as '10O per cent war producers to V-J day. But from a practical business point of view it is no privilege to continue on as major war producers while other industries reconvert. The plywood industry must strive to release itself from government controls of all kinds at the earliest moment consistent with efiective prosecution of the war'"

Repeated by all speakers at the meeting as one condition {avoring plywood manufacturers-and the panel jobbers and retail lumber dealers who sell it in peacetime-is that

about 25 per cent greater than at present.

Although plastic.surfaced plywood has been produced in accordance with military specifications for many months and much speculation has been evidenced as to its future possibilities, few details of the present and future products previously have been released. However, at the meeting not only was development of the panels reviewed but also furniture, signs, boxes and novelties built of the new material were displayed.

"The rapid development of products combining plywood or veneer (thin sheets of wood) and plastic overlays is perhaps the outstanding industry advancement of the year," W. E. Difford, managing director of the trade association, told the industry leaders in making his annual report. "From this expanded program, the industry can place itself in a stronger position in the manufacture and sale of its basic product-plywood-and at the same time improve its place in a broader field of wood processing and efficient wood utilization."

By bonding a plastic surface to plywood or veneer many new properties are added to its inherent strength. Some panels may have completely finished surfaces which are hard. smooth. wear-resistant and water-resistant and in a variety of colors. Other plastic-plywood sheets would be intended for further finishing such as painting. The natural wood appearance is retained in some surfaces; other plastic sheets mask the wood completely.

"Production of the new combination material-in addition to standard grades of plywood-will mean Oregon and Washington factories can provide themselves the opportunity of increasing their output, particularly in dollar volume, beyond present capacity," Mr. Difford forecast. He emphasized that by adding the new surfaces, lower grade veneer and plywood can be used as a basis for a finished product that is both attractive and durable.

Further evidence that the plywood inclustry, a relatively new ofishoot of the lumber industry, plans to maintain and strengthen its position, was presented in a talk by E. W. Daniels of Hoquiam, Wash., president of Harbor Plywoocl Corp., and chairman of the management cornmittee r.vhich actively directs association affairs.

Mr. Daniels related progress of the new Plyrvood Research Foundation, a separate organization previously established with an initial appropriation of $100,000 and just starting operations. He listed objectives of the foundation, located at Tacoma, as follows :

"1. To develclp means of using waste rvoods resulting from present processing at plvwood factories and in the forests.

"2. To produce ne'vv products u'hich the plylvood factories can manufacture in addition to their present panels.

"3. To improve plywood through chemical means.

"4. To improve the production and properties of Douglas fir plywood through improvement in processing and manufacturing equipment."

Introduced by lVIr. Daniels were Dr. John G. Meiler, director of the research foundation, and Harold R. Evans, field representative of tire organization rvho rvill foster development of improved machinery for plyrvood factories.

While the new research institute 'lvas being organized, work of the long-established industry laboratory, also at Tacoma, has continued to expand during the past year. Much of the development of the plastics-plywood combination has come from this source although in this field individual plywood firms and plastics manttfacturers also have contributed greatly.

Also continued throughout the year was the advertising and promotional program of the fir plyrvood industry directed at telling specifiers of building materials-architects, engineers. builders and lumber dealers-that fir plywood basically is a peacetime building commodity though at present serving as a war material. This advertising program will continue and has been extended to reach farmers and amateur and professional boat builders, comprising large markets for lumber dealers to serve in the future.

Business at the meeting, which was limited to a twohour session in contrast to the two-dav sales conventions

held in peace-time, included reelection of all association officers for a second one-year term. In addition to President Malarkey, they are:

Arnold Koutonen, president of Olympia Veneer Co., Olympia, Wash., vice president; Hermant E. Tenzler, president of Northwest Door Co., Tacoma, secretary; and J. P. Simpson, general manager of Buffelen Lumber & Mfg. Co., Tacoma, treasurer.

Trustees of the all-industry board include: E. W. Daniels, J. R. Robinson, president of Robinson Mfg. Co., Everett, Wash.; George H. Royer, sales manager of Smith Wood-Products, Inc., Portland; and Craig L. Spencer, president of Elliott Bay Mill Co., Seattle.

Plywood procluction for 1944 totaled 1,500,000,000square feet, about the same as for the previous year. The bulk of the output went directly to the Army and Navy with the remainder distributed, under WPB allocation, throughout the nation but for sale only on top priority ratings.

Mr. Daniels, in relating the work of the management committee during the year, paid high tribute to the cooperative spirit which has been maintained between industry and War Production Board officials. Particularly, he called attention to the contributions of Clifford P. Setter and B. A. Forest Supervisors Retire

San Francisco, June 30.-Retirement from active service of two old-time forest supervisors, David N. Rogers, in charge of the Plumas National Forest, Quincy, for over 35 years, and Roy Boothe, Inyo National Forest, Bishop, a member of the Forest Service since 1907, 'ivas announced today by Regional Forester S. B. Show, chief of the U. S. Forest Service in California.

Carl A. Gustafson, supervisor of the Klamath National Forest, Yreka, has been named supervisor of the Plumas Forest, succeeding Mr. Rogers. George S. James, district ranger at Bakersfield, Sequoia National Forest, has been promoted to be supervisor of the Klamath Forest, succeeding Mr. Gustafson. Floyd Iverson, Bieber, ranger, Modoc National Forest, has been promoted to be supervisor of the Inyo National Forest, succeeding Mr. Boothe.

U. S. Ends Warworker Housing Projects In Los Angeles Area

Los Angeles, Calif., June 27-With the announcement of 500 neu' portable shelter units to be built by the Federal Public Housing Agency for Navy employees in the harbor district, local military and civilian Government leaders today joined to cancel their request to Washington for 5750 additional units on which action had not yet been taken by military and congressional authorities.

Barring unforeseen emergencies, the move means an end to construction o{ the Federal public housing projects, dormitories, and the acres of privately built homes reserved for war workers, which since Pearl Harbor have enlarged the Los Angeles area's housing capacity by some 81,300 family units.

Thus, all new homes henceforth rvill be built by private capital.

This action lvas taken yesterday at a meeting of the area production urgency committee attended by representatives of all branches of the armed forces and by heads of civilian agencies. It was based on a report made by a subcommittee after a 30-day study of the housing situation here.

"We by no means feel that the war is anywhere near finished, nor that the housing shortage in this area is over with," Chairman Louis M. Dreves declared.

"We do feel that, barring unforeseen emergencies, additional housing should be built by private capital, when, as, and if manpower and materials are available.

"If a turn in the war should require building'of a new plant or military installation in an area where no housing is available, we would, of course, sponsor public housing for this purpose, as we have always done."

Priorities will continue to be furnished on two types of residential construction designated by the National Housing Agency as "H-3" housing, for veterans of World War If, evictees, and other "hardship" cases, and "H-2" housing, for general relief of the general housing shortage. "H-3" approvals have been averaging about 500 a month, while "H-2" housing was launched with an already allocated quota of 1000 homes per month for the next six months.

The production urgency committee withdrew its recommendations of further Federal housing here for the purpose of (1) avoiding possible over-expansion of housing at tax-

payers' expenses; (2) getting faster action than is possible where funds must be appropriated ,by Congress; and (3) bringing the schedule for housing construction here to a size in line with the amount of manpower and materials now actually available.

Chairman Louis M. Dreves said the urgency committee in the past two years had sought by every possible means, including uprating of priorities on materials and assignment of high urgency ratings for manpower, to get more houses built, but that at no time had actual completions been more than about 2000 units per month.

"That appears to be the industry's total capacity under present conditions, and probably will be until the military construction program tapers off," Dreves declared.

Yet in sight for local war workers are some 5522 units of "H-1" war housing, mass-built by private contractors with two-thirds of the units reserved for rental, one-third for sale; and 1500 publicly-financed portable shelter units for Navy employees, including the 5@ units announced today, according to W. Conrad McKelvey, field representative of the National Housing Agency.

Between 6000 and 7000 veterans and evictees, McKelvey said, also have received priorities from FHA since the "H-3" program began on January lst.

For ordinary Southern Californians at large, there are in sight some 6000 units of "H-2" housing allocated for the next six months. About 200 of these already are under construction, although the program was initiated only three or four rveeks ago.

Amendments to Order L-335

Direction 2a, which controls the delivery and use of Western pines, is amended as follows:

(1) All pine from mills cutting less than 1O MBM per day is exempt from the direction. Such footage can be delivered without need for the special authorization number. However, this lumber is still under control of the general provisions of L-335 with regard to certifications, ratings, etc.

(2) Western pine may now be used to manufacture such items as cabinets, kitchen cupboards, etc., provided these items are for use in approved construction jobs rated AA-3 or higher. Previously only cloors, winclows, frames, etc., could be manufactured from pine. In addition, pine from mills cutting less than 10 MBM per day, being exempted from the Direction, can be used to manufacture any item regardless of its final use.

(3) Class fI consumers, those using less than 50 MBM per quarter, who have previously received authorization to buy pine may continue to use their present authorization number for the third and succeeding quarters. previously authorizecl footage must not be exceeded and the pine must be used for the same pnrpose as originally applied for. Direction 6, which controls delivery of certain species of hardwood is also amended:

(1) Previously, mills manufacturing 5 MBNf of hard.ivood lumber per day were covered by this Direction. This figure has been raised to 30 MBM per week.

(2). As in Direction 2a above, Class II consurners may continue to use their previously assignecl authorjzation numbers to purchase hardwood lumber. These amendments became effective Iune 30.

Edgar B. King, one of the founders of the King Lun-rber Company, of Bakersfield, rvith yards throughout the southern San Joaquin Vallev, passed away in a sanitarium in Livermore, Calif., June 13, after a long illness.

Mr. King, a native of Tennessee, came to Kern County in the early 9O's, and to Bakersfield in 1901. He later moved to Berkeley.

He is survived by his lvidow, Mrs. Acla Newport King; two daughters, Mrs. James Metcalf and Mrs. Frank Nagle of Berkeley; a sister, Mrs. J. B. McKeon, and four brothers, Arthur D. of Hillsborough; and Elmore, Everett and Leslie King of Bakersfield, who carry on tl-re King Lumber Company.
