NATURE INTERACTION

KNEE HIGH NATURALIST

It is never too early to introduce your child to the world of nature. Children are naturally curious about the world around them. This program is designed to introduce you and your child to the simple, natural things around us. Each week we will discover the wonders of nature by going outside, weather permitting, and doing a “hands on” activity.

Ages: 1-5 years • Instructor: CCPR Staff

BUILD YOUR OWN SEED BOMB

When it comes to plants, there truly is no place like home. Learn why native plants are the best ecological choice, what species call Indiana home, and how native plants benefit pollinators. Participants will build a native seed bomb with native pollinator friendly seeds to take home.

Ages: 5+ years • Instructor: CCPR Staff

FAMILY EVENING HIKE

Central Park in the fall? You never know what cool creatures you might find! Bring the whole family along for a night of exploration with a park Naturalist. You will hit the trails to observe nighttime bird songs, wildlife movement and maybe even hear an owl call. Dress for the weather with clothing and shoes that can get dirty. A flashlight or headlamp is required. Registration is per family.

Ages: All Ages • Instructor: CCPR Staff

HABITAT HEROES

Every animal needs a place to live. The environment where an animal lives is called a habitat and includes the right kind of food, water, shelter, and space that it needs. We will learn how each piece fits together like a puzzle to make the perfect home for all kinds of critters. We will also talk about what happens when a piece of the habitat puzzle goes missing and how we can protect habitats for the future. Weather permitting, participants will take a walk outside to look for habitats.

PROJECT WINGSPAN NATIVE SEED PROJECT

VOLUNTEER

Project Wingspan is an initiative supported by a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Federation. It is administered by the non-profit Pollinator Partnership, which is leading a coalition of partners in an effort to enhance land across the Midwest to support our imperiled pollinators – especially monarch butterflies and rusty patched bumblebee. And you can help us make a difference!

All seed that is collected will be shipped to the main nursery with Pollinator Partnership where it will be processed (cleaned and sorted) and distributed to predetermined conservation areas to help these pollinators survive. Volunteers under 16 years old must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

IN-PERSON

NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY  VOLUNTEER

Established in 1994, National Public Lands Day is considered to be one of the nation’s largest single-day volunteer efforts. It falls on the fourth Saturday of September every year. Join us this National Public Lands Day and spend some time outdoors as we remove invasive plant species from our beloved parks and greenways. Volunteers under 16 years old must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

WORLD HABITAT DAY TREE PLANTING  VOLUNTEER

Project Wingspan At-Home Helpers

Assist with our native seed project from the comfort of your own home! Our At-Home Helpers will have the opportunity to help with sorting native seeds to prepare them for shipping to the Pollinator Partnership nursery. Participants will be trained on techniques and then allowed to work on their own time. Volunteers under 16 years old must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

The purpose of World Habitat Day is to reflect on the basic rights of all to adequate shelter. It is intended to remind the world that we all have the power and responsibility to shape the future of our cities and towns. Habitat for plants and animals is a very important aspect of our ecosystem. Removing non-native plants and replacing them with native species is a way to provide essential food and shelter for the wildlife that call our parks home. Come join us for an afternoon of planting trees in the Vera Hinshaw Park & Preserve. This 10acre woodland is adjacent to the Monon Trail and north of the 96th Street Trailhead. Volunteers under 16 years old must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

AMERICA RE CYCLES D AY  VOLUNTEER

The concepts of reducing, reusing, and recycling are more relevant today than ever before. More and more often we hear about drastic changes in the natural environment caused in part by pollution - and we certainly have a hefty role to play. The United States has the third-largest population of all countries, but it produces the most municipal solid waste in the world: 258 million tons of MSW was generated in 2017 alone. The good news is that since we are such a big part of the problem, we can be an even greater part of the solution. Join us for America Recycles Day to learn about the importance of recycling and partner with us to clean up our parks and greenways! Volunteers under 16 years old must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Join the Pickleball Ladder League! The Co-Ed Pickleball Ladder League format is designed to create new matchups each week and have players play with players of similar skill levels. Weekly rankings are based on performance, meaning players will move up or down the ladder based on wins/losses, not points scored. Each week, players will start in groups of four in the order of ladder ranking. After each game to 11, the winning partnership will move up the ladder and the losing partnership will move down. Partners swap each game. There is a maximum of five wins each league night. After a maximum of five games per team have been played, open play is allowed for the remainder of the time slot as long as courts are available. Not only will you get to meet new people and continue to hone your pickleball skills, but the top two two players will get free enrollment to the next season of the league. No Class on 10/9.

Most athletes have a general sense of how to train their bodies through increasing strength and flexibility, while countless hours are spent honing their craft by sharpening their technique and strategy. Harnessing the mind represents the final frontier of accessing peak performance, and mental skills training represents a first step in realizing your full potential.
