OUR MESSAGE

O nce again, warm greetings from windy but beautiful Cape Town!

basically, it means “get upâ€?. The word is used by Jesus when he brings the little girl back to life: “Arise little girlâ€?. It is also used by the prophet Isaiah in his stirring prophetic words to the Church (us): “Arise, shine for your light has comeâ€?. In other words, “Get up Church and shine, for your light has come!â€?. We are part of the sequel to the book of Acts – we UHČľHFW +LV OLJKW DV ZH UHVSRQG WR +LV FDOO DQG DFW $QG MXVW OLNH WKRVH Č´UVW GLVFLSOHV ZHȇOO PDNH PLVWDNHV we’ll experience hardship and we’ll constantly have to lean on +LV JUDFH DQG UHVXUUHFWLRQ SRZHU

CHRISTIAN OR CHILD OF GOD?

For a while, each time I looked in the mirror, those were the words going through my mind. I had allowed my conviction to turn into a source of shame. What conviction? The conviction that my life, while I called myself a Christian, was not anything near the example Jesus had set out for us during his walk on Earth.

“What do you have that you did not receive?â€? Paul asked the Corinthians LQ KLV Č´UVW OHWWHU WR WKHP (YHU\ SHUVRQ on the face of the earth who has ever lived has received. Some have received much, some have received little. Some have received evil, others have received good. We also receive from people close to us, from a mother or father, a brother or sister, from friends and acquaintances, even from complete strangers. But today I want to write about what we have received from the

Father. Scripture says: “Which of you fathers, if your son asks IRU D Č´VK ZLOO JLYH KLP D VQDNH LQVWHDG" Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your )DWKHU LQ KHDYHQ JLYH WKH +RO\ 6SLULW WR WKRVH ZKR DVN KLP Č‹ /XNH Let’s use our imaginations for a second and go back in time, even beyond time, before the creation of the world, and 07

let’s imagine that God the Father was VLWWLQJ DW D WDEOH ZLWK -HVXV WKH +RO\ Spirit, and some of the chief angels and cherubim. A question is asked by the Father, “What can we do to show the people we will create that I love them, and what can we give to them to express this love?â€?. Someone VXJJHVWV IURP DFURVV WKH WDEOH ČŠ+RZ about wealth, health and happiness?â€?. God responds, “Yes that’s good, but I want to express my love in a greater measure, I want to give them moreâ€?. $ FKHUXE QH[W WR -HVXV VD\V ČŠ+RZ about eternal life, that’s a great gift, DQG ZLOO GHČ´QLWHO\ VKRZ WKHP \RX FDUH for themâ€?. The Father answers, “Yes, eternal life is good, and we will certainly make that available to them, but even eternal life is not enough. I really want them to grasp, and experience my love for them.â€?. Finally, Jesus speaks up, “I’ve got it! We know love is the greatest gift, but what greater love has someone than ‘to lay down his life for a friend’? I will give my very life for them, this is the greatest gift I can give!â€?. What could be PRUH YDOXDEOH WKDQ JLYLQJ P\ VRQ" +H is worth far more than health, or wealth or knowledge, nothing on earth can FRPSDUH ZLWK +LP $ORQJ ZLWK WKLV Ζ ZLOO also give them myself, for what can be greater in all creation, all heaven and all earth, than my very self. In closing, I want to ask you, from whom are you receiving? From the world, or from the Father? Lesedi will be 8 years old this year and is in Grade 3. She came to Dayspring (our OP Partner in Maanhaarrand, South Africa) in Grade 1, very traumatised. Lesedi’s mother did not grow up in a stable home. She fell pregnant with Lesedi while in high school and dropped out of school to have her. Being very young and having little support from her other family members, Lesedi’s mom found herself pregnant again, JLYLQJ ELUWK WR D VHFRQG GDXJKWHU 1DOHGL There were a number of very tragic events LQFOXGLQJ OLYLQJ LQ DEMHFW SRYHUW\ ZKLFK /HVHGL witnessed as a young child. This caused Lesedi a lot of trauma. %\ WKH WLPH /HVHGL VWDUWHG .LQGHUJDUWHQ LQ D Government school, she was already severely emotionally challenged and school work simply added to her feeling of being overwhelmed. She did not progress well, but the school passed her onto Grade 1 regardless. Lesedi and the mother were brought to Dayspring by a community worker who felt strongly that the child and mom needed their intervention. It was already second term of Lesedi’s Grade 1 year. Every time the Grade 1 teacher was giving lessons or trying to work ZLWK KHU VKH ZRXOG MXVW VKXW GRZQČ? +HU KHDG down on the desk and unresponsive or crying. 09

This behaviour is typical of children ZKR KDYH VXÎ?HUHG WUDXPD /HVHGL was assessed and it was concluded that she had no kindergarten level foundational skills. life to Jesus but she is really still a new Christian with lots of stress, anxiety and depression. As a result and as young as she is, she had a stroke in November. We have visited her several times to see how she is and how we can assist her.

Lesedi’s mom is so grateful for Orphans Promise which is covering both children’s school fees and ΖW ZDV UHDOO\ D WRXJK ȴUVW \HDU IRU supporting her emotionally . Three years after I had accepted Jesus Christ into my life, praying and singing beautiful songs like “ let what breaks your heart break mine,� I started to experience what felt like God’s heart regarding situations and people. It was the weirdest thing to my mind, but a delight to my spirit. In its simplest form, when God was happy with someone I VSRNH WR Ζ IHOW DQ LPPHQVH MR\ DQG SULGH wash over me. When that individual speaks, everything they say feels like a melody or song. I began to love hearing people pray.

It is this connection to the grief that facilitated repentance. It was hearts turning back to *RG WKDW ZDV VLJQLȴFDQW SHUKDSV HYHQ more than the wall rebuilt.

On the other side of the coin, I picked up RQ +LV JULHI DQG VRUURZ RYHU D VLWXDWLRQ or a person. In my experience, it felt like death. The pain and grief is intense. All you want to do is get rid of it quickly. This was quite traumatic for me as I was young, insecure and an inexperienced Christian who has never seen such gifting modelled in a church setting. My brain couldn’t comprehend what was It’s in this space of grief that Nehemiah going on, so I buried it. I thank God for showing me his heart in the way that I love my children. They bring me great joy and as I write this, I want you to know that you bring God great joy as His child, so much so that He gave up his life for you!

7KHVH ODVW IRXU PRQWKV KDYH EHHQ WKH PRVW GLÉ?FXOW EXW the most rewarding months I’ve experienced yet. Most RI WKH WLPH P\ KRXVH LV D PHVV WKH ČľRRUV DUH GLUW\ Ζ DP consistently tripping over toys, food is squashed onto the couch, there is a massive pile of dirty dishes and the laundry is staring at me. I am tired due to lack of sleep DQG LURQLFDOO\ Ζ Č´QG P\VHOI SHUPDQHQWO\ KXQJU\ \HW constantly trying to feed two little mouths... and the list 13

goes on. If you’re a mother of little children, or have been, I am sure you can relate. I have been on maternity leave and have been looking after my two sons who are now 2.5 \HDUV DQG PRQWKV ROG 7KHVH IRXU PRQWKV KDYH ȵRZQ E\ Yet, simultaneously, the days seemed like they would never end... You know what I mean? In the hard moments of tears, tantrums and sleeplessness, it feels never ending. But I know that these are the days that I will miss... chaotic but I’ll miss them. These are the days that my heart will ache for because when my children are grown up, I will miss them being around all the time. The hugs and kisses and sweetness that oozes out of them makes me certain that it’s all worth it. What’s even more rewarding is knowing that God has given me this opportunity to disciple them. $V PRWKHUV ZH PDNH YLVLEOH DQG LQYLVLEOH VDFULÈ´FHV IRU RXU FKLOGUHQ *RG SODFHG ZLWKLQ XV D È´HUFH GHHS XQFRQGLWLRQDO love for our children. But oh what JOY we get out of the relationship. It makes me think about how much Christ loves PH DQG WKH PDJQLWXGH RI KLV ORYH IRU DOO SHRSOH WKRVH WKDW have lived, are living and those still to be born... It’s incredible to think of love at that magnitude. God doesn’t feel like running away when he sees the chaos of my life. Instead +H SXUVXHV PH DQG GLHG IRU PH È‚ WKH JUHDWHVW VDFULÈ´FH RI DOO WLPH +H VHW PH IUHH IURP WKH ÈŠFKDRV È‹ $QG +H GLG WKDW for everyone. Wow! Again, going back to the magnitude of -HVXVȇ ORYH WKH VDFULÈ´FH WKDW -HVXV PDGH IRU \RX DQG PH IDU H[FHHGV WKDW RI D PRWKHUȇV EXW LWȇV FHUWDLQO\ D UHȵHFWLRQ RI LW in a big way. I thank God for showing me his heart in the way WKDW Ζ ORYH P\ FKLOGUHQ 7KH\ EULQJ PH JUHDW MR\ DQG DV Ζ ZULWH WKLV Ζ ZDQW \RX WR NQRZ WKDW \RX EULQJ *RG JUHDW MR\ DV +LV FKLOG VR PXFK VR WKDW +H JDYH XS KLV OLIH IRU \RX 3DUWQHUV RI CBN, as a mother I would like to say thank you for supporting WKH PDQ\ ZRPHQ WKDW EHQHÈ´W IURP WKH YDULRXV &%1 SURMHFWV Women like Lesedi’s mother (page 9); are receiving physical, emotional and spiritual support to raise their children. Please keep on supporting CBN so that we can continue to change the lives of women, mothers and children in our communities. 14

Susan and the Couch Susan* lives in one of the most dangerous areas of Cape Town. Some time ago she encountered Jesus through an outreach team doing work in the area.

a mutual friend and decided to help. With the assistance of friends, partners and donors we managed to bless Susan with clothes, food, appliances and, yes, even this lovely couch in order to help her rebuild her home. We praise God that her home has since been rebuilt, and she has most of the items she had originally lost .

After hearing the good news about Jesus, she decided to turn from her life of sin, and follow the way of Christ instead. She has been growing in leaps and bounds ever since. An interesting story in Numbers contrasts two ways of looking at obstacles. Before the Israelites entered the Promised Land, Moses sent 12 men to spy it out. John 4 was a classic case of how you deal with someone along the way. Jesus met a woman standing near a well and asked her for water. More than anything, have the Spirit of God in your soul, so that you’re empathetic with others.
