VETERANS HONORED IN WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA CEREMONIES

BEAR, DE - What started as a simple way for a Maine man to pay tribute to veterans at Christmas with surplus wreaths was on full display in Delaware this weekend. Hundreds of volunteers helped lay 6,482 wreaths at the sprawling

Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery as part of the annual Wreaths Across America. Just over the state line from Chesapeake City in Bear, the cemetery was one of more than 3,400 in the United States and abroad that helped carry out Morrill Worcester’s vision that start-

ed in 1992.

Before fanning out to place wreaths at the grave sites of the veterans, a service of remembrance was held at the cemetery. Delaware Lieutenant Governor Bethany Hall-Long spoke. Family members of those interred there spoke as well. World War II veteran Sgt Werner

H. Schlaupitz, who still runs marathons at the age of 99, was in attendance. It was a community affair to remember those who served our country.

Local coordinator Eric Lauppe, a veteran himself, urged the volunteers to say the name of each veteran at whose grave they were

laying a wreath after recalling an old adage that says, “A soldier dies twice: once when they take their final breath, and later, the last time their name is spoken.”; After most volunteers had left, a pair of Boy Scouts could be seen going from grave to grave, rendering a salute, and saying

the name of the veteran. In 2021, Wreaths Across America was responsible for the placement of 2.4 million wreaths, including 250,000 at Arlington National Cemetery.

COLORA - It was a familiar scenario for the Tome Titans as they visited West Nottingham last week for a boys basketball matchup between Cecil County private schools. The Titans were short on personnel, undersized, they still managed to make a game of it against the Rams until the fourth quarter and eventually fell 59-50.

BOHEMIA MANOR EAGLES WRESTLING SOPHOMORE

Josh Allen was the only Cecil County Wrestler to finish on the top of the podium at this weekends Kent County Holiday Wrestling Tournament.

Josh wrestled in the 138lb Weight Class and won all six matches on his way to winning the event.

Josh was on our All County Wrestling Team in 2021 as a Freshman (when this photo was taken). We are sure we will be covering him alot more after the holidays as he prepares for the State Tournament.

AMANDA CALLAGHAN

Amanda Callaghan placed first in the the 800 meter race this past week at Catonsville Community College racing against 12 other schools from across Maryland. Her time of 2:36.58 was almost 20 seconds faster than the second place finisher, Isabella Chavis, also from Rising Sun.

When Amanda wasn’t racing on the track she could be found on the far turn waiting for her teammates to shout words of encouragement as they pushed to finish their events. A total team player she cheers on all Cecil County runners at every event.

Even after losing one of the four freshman who have had significant time, Will Loller, to an injury near-

ing the end of the first half, Tome fought back and took an early third quarter 37-33 lead. The margin was shortlived after back-to-back threes put the Rams back in front for good.

“When I was told they had so many freshman, I fig-

ured we would go out to an early lead, but they proved me wrong,” said West Nottingham Head Coach Zack Ward, “So we had to go into halftime and make some adjustments. Those players can really play and they took us by surprise.”

The fourth quarter broke the Titans and broke the game open for West Nottingham. Tsai proceeded to knock down a pair of threes as Tome missed a dozen bank shots and layups on 10 trips down the court in the face of West Nottingham’s ferocious defense. Tsai led

all scorers with 25 points.

“This was a tough win. We faced some adversity. We were down and we had to fight back and play some tough defense,” said Ward, “If we keep playing like this we are going to turn up pretty good.”

Iago Focinos-Gutierrez added 18 for the Rams. Tome was led by Sam Booth’s 16 points. Layton Le added 14 and Spencer Cain drained 13 for the Titans to round out all the double-digit scorers.

North East Indians rally in second half for 49-42 win over Perryville

NORTH EAST–After struggling on offense in the first half, North East entered the second half trailing visiting Perryville by a point in the teams’ UCBAC Susquehanna Division basketball battle Friday night.

The Indians talked about executing on the offensive end at the halftime break, and they did just that by scoring 20 points in the third quarter to blow past the Panthers to earn a 49-42 victory.

“We just looked at running the offense, finding what matchups we wanted, and being smart with the ball,” North East head coach Seth Grimes said. “We spaced the floor much better, and they made some good de-

cisions. It’s still early in the season, and there are still a lot of things to clean up. They finally started to focus on the game plans, and they executed at a much better rate in the second half.”

The Indians made just five field goals in the first half, but their strong defense enabled them to keep pace with Perryville as they trailed 20-19 entering the third quarter, and the Panthers maintained a one-point lead at 24-23 in the early stages of the third quarter.

That’s when North East’s Luke Keefer took over the game as he scored 14 points to power a 16-0 run that gave the Indians the lead for good a 39-24, and Keefer credits his teammates for creating space for him to operate.

“I felt good. My teammates were opening up the floor, and I was getting open shots,” Keefer, who had 17 points, said. “They were just falling. It was one of the best quarters I played, I say.”

North East entered the fourth quarter with a 39-27 lead, and the Indians kept Perryville at bay in the final quarter thanks to consistent free throw shooting, making 6-9 in the frame to keep their lead.

One of the keys’ to the Indians’ victory was their defensive effort throughout as they held Perryville to just 13 made field goals, including three three pointers, and the reason for their strong play was a combination of a closing out on the Panthers’ shooters and a collective team effort on the defensive

end.

“We’ve been practicing really hard. We’ve played some good teams in Harford County, Aberdeen and Patterson Mill, early. (Perryville) has shooters, and every kid that can come on the floor can hit,” Grimes said. “We said we have to focus on close out drills and working on closing out, making sure we contest without fouling. They’re growing day-in and day-out.”

“We played with heart. We played as a team. We played as a unit, and that’s why we walked away with the win,” Jebez Griffin added.

Giffin led the way with 20 points for the Indians points while the Panthers got 12 points from Jerry Howard.

Golden Elks get first win of season against Indians

ELKTON-Elkton looked to take what it has been working on in practice into its UCBAC Susquehanna Division girls’ basketball contest against visiting North East Thursday evening.

The Golden Elks achieved just that on both offense and defense as they stymied the Indians for most of the game, leading throughout en route to a 50-33 victory to nab their first win of the season.

“We do what we do in practice. What we do in practice is what we do in games. You saw that today. We had intensity all throughout the game,” Elkton’s Milana Redden, who had a game-high 18 points, said.

“We trusted our guards, our players and our bigs.”

That early intensity allowed the Golden Elks to jump out 5-1 lead en route to a 11-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter with Redden pacing the way with five points in the frame.

Elkton steadily pulled away in the second quarter as it outscored the Indians 16-8 in the quarter to build up a 27-16 lead at halftime.

One reason why the Golden Elks were able to build a double digit lead at halftime was that their 2-3 defense limited North East to just six field goals, and head coach Gabe Sherrod said a new tool the team has been using has helped the defense play as a team.

“We were hungry for a win. We were 0-3 and lost

Indoor Track Season sends local teams on the road for events

some games we probably shouldn’t have lost. The girls came together and worked really well,” Sherrod said. “We ran the 2-3 last year, so they were comfortable with it. It’s something we get a lot of engagement from. We have some cool toys that we work with in practice that help us. We have this bungee cord that ties them together and makes them work as one unit.”

CATONSVILLE, MD - On Friday, December 16th, runners from Rising Sun and Elkton gathered with teams from Harford County, Montgomery County, Baltimore County, and Baltimore City to race at CCBC Catonsville’s indoor track.

It was a picturesque 4-lane 160 meter track with a great spectating area and grand domed ceiling. Around every corner of the track, runners could hear cheers from their team and other fans.

Elkton and Rising Sun performed spectacularly in their first meets of the indoor track season! Rising Sun found great success in the mid distance and distance events, with their “A” relay teams winning first place in the girl’s 4x800 and third place in the boys 4x800. They took second and third place in the girls and boys 1600 (Savannah Lacey, Emily Wishart and Matt McKay, John Ferry) as well as second in the boys 3200 (John Ferry) and third in the girls 3200 (Kaitlin Perry). The Rising Sun girls swept the 800 taking places first, second, and third (Amanda Callaghan, Bella Chavis, Isabelle Griffith). The Rising Sun girls 4x400 earned first, and the girls team also took second and third in the 500 (Katelyn Lacey, Emily Wishart).

Elkton did very well in the sprint events! Elkton’s girls team took third and fifth in the girls’ 300 (MyAven Ewing, Sage North), and 9th and 10th in the boys’ 300 (Taino Jurry, Isaiah Huffstutler), where both races were very competitive events. Elkton’s girls and boys 4x160 “A” teams took fourth place in their races, both finishing first out of the Harford and Cecil schools at the meet. Elkton also took 8th in the boys’ 500 (Damon Brooks).

The meet was a great start to the season for Elkton and Rising Sun! Buckle up Cecil County, because this meet has proved that this indoor track season may be the fastest one yet.

The Indians picked up the intensity for the second half as they stayed within striking distance in the third quarter as their deficit remained in the low double digits for most of the frame as Elkton took a 38-26 lead into the fourth quarter.

After North East cut its deficit to nine points at 4233 midway through the

fourth quarter, Elkton found a rhythm again and closed the game on an 8-0 run to clinch the victory

The Golden Elks got contributions from several players on the offensive end, and Sherrod liked what he saw from his offense against the Indians.

“We told the girls about being confident, moving the ball, swinging it around, find-

ing the open man and taking what the defense gives them,” Sherrod said. “We saw that all night long, and I’m really proud of everybody’s effort and how they contributed. It speaks volumes about how they trust in each other and trust in us to listen to what we coach.”

Saylor Bare, who led North East with 14 points, said the Indians need to

start each game with intensity they played in third and fourth quarters.

“I think we came out a little slow in the first half. As the second half started, we started to get into it,” Saylor Bare said. “We have to come out with intensity every game from start to finish and don’t stop until the buzzer goes off.”
