NORTH EAST SENIOR ABBEY SCHEFFLER HAS HUGE NIGHT AGAINST RISING SUN TIGERS

NORTH EAST - The North East Indians Girls Lacrosse team celebrated Senior Night this past Tuesday in their last regular season home game at North East High School.

The Lady Indians are graduating 12 seniors this year, and going into their Senior Night game the Indians were at the bottom of the standings for the 1A South Region II playoffs.

The Rising Sun Tigers sit in third place in those same rankings and had previously defeated the Lady Indians 16-10 in early April. The Indians and Tigers could end up

facing each other again in the Regional Quarterfinals so the Lady Indians needed to show they could rally and match the high scoring pace of Rising Sun’s Emily Stuart and Allie Piccalo.

The Indians have carried a message all year on their warmup jerseys. Printed on each jersey is the word Relentless and - CONTINUED ON PG 4 -

the number 13. A special homage to a Coach these 12 Seniors lost following their freshman year. His name was Ryan Cooling. He was an Assistant Coach at North East their freshman year, and he was loved by all his players. He had coached several of this year’s Seniors even before High School. His death hit the girls hard as well as the families of all the players he coached from a young age. Tuesday was their last stand on their home field, and they wanted to go out with a big win. No one played harder than the young woman who changed her jersey number to 13 following Ryan’s death, his daughter Abbey Scheffler. Abbey had a standout game for the Indians on Tuesday scoring 7 goals helping carry the Lady Indians to a huge win over the Rising Sun Tiger 15-10. Full game stats were not available to be included in this story but really the story isn’t about goals or assists. The story on Tuesday was about the relentless play of Abbey Scheffler and her eleven Senior friends along with her sister, Sophomore Sophie Scheffler, who played their hardest to honor a coach and father they will never forget.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

* On May 24, 1883, after 14 years and 27 deaths during construction, the Brooklyn Bridge in New York is opened, the largest suspension bridge ever built to that date. * On May 27, 1894, Dashiell Hammett, author of “The Maltese Falcon,” is born in Maryland. He worked as a Pinkerton detective for eight years and turned his experiences into fiction. The novel was filmed three times, the last in 1941, starring Humphrey Bogart. * On May 28, 1902, Owen Wister’s “The Virginian” is published. It was the first serious Western and one of the most influential in the genre. The book became a sensation and inspired four movies and a Broadway play. * On May 29, 1932, the so-called Bonus Expeditionary Force, a group of 1,000 World War I veterans seeking cash payments for their veterans’ bonus certificates, arrives in Washington, D.C. One month later, that number had swelled to nearly 20,000 strong. * On May 26, 1940, President Franklin Roosevelt makes a radio appeal for the support of the Red Cross. Belgian and French civilians were “running from their homes to escape bombs and shells and machine gunning, without shelter, and almost wholly without food,” FDR told Americans. * On May 23, 1960, a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Chile travels across the Pacific Ocean and kills 61 people in Hilo, Hawaii. The massive 9.5 magnitude quake had killed thousands in Chile the previous day. The Pacific Tsunami Warning System, established in 1948, worked properly and warnings were issued to Hawaiians six hours in advance, but some people ignored the warnings and others actually headed to the coast to view the wave. * On May 25, 1977, the communist government of China lifts its decade-old ban on the writings of William Shakespeare. Catherine Meadows comes to the plate and hits a sacrifice fly to right fielder Jaylin Rouselle allowing Simpkins to score putting Rising Sun up 3-2 in the middle of the eighth inning. McCullough gets out of the inning when Riley Jackson and Ryleigh Racine each fly out to center field. Going into the ninth with the score tied at three all, the crowd is getting excited and growing as the baseball game has ended and some of the track competitors from the track event are watching through the fence from the adjacent track. Rising Sun begins

the extra inning placing Senior Grace Boyd on second. Sam Dixon pops out to first baseman Kaiva Hicks holding Boyd at second. Rebman walks Jordan Lynch placing runners now at first and second base. Catcher Bri Cole hits a hard ground ball for single and loads the bases for the Lady Tigers and Faith McCullough next at bat. Faith hits a fly ball to left field and reaches base on an error by Perryville as Grace Boyd and Jordan Lynch come in to score. Jayden Simpkins would pop out in foul territory and Meadows lines out to shortstop Riley Jackson sending the Panthers into the bottom of the ninth down 5-3. The Lady Panthers place Hicks as the runner on second base but are unable to score as they ground out twice to Simpkins at second base and a line out to Lynch at third ends the game. Abby McBride started the game in the circle for Rising Sun. McBride went six innings, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out four. Faith McCullough took the

win for Rising Sun. The pitcher lasted three innings, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out two and walking one. Jocelyn Rebman took the loss for the Panthers. Rebman toed the rubber the entire game with the righthander allowing 13 hits and three runs over nine innings, striking out one. Rising Sun collected 13 hits. Bri Cole, Jordan Lynch, and McBride each collected multiple hits for the Lady Tigers. Lynch and Cole each managed three hits to lead the team. Briana Rebman led the Panthers with two hits in three at bats. Perryville now has one game remaining on their regular season schedule. They will travel to North East on Monday May 9 to face the Indians. Teams from across the county will learn their playoff matchups later in the week as Regional Quarterfinals begin on Thursday May 12. Currently the Panthers are sitting at fourth in the 1A South Division while the Tigers have the lead sitting atop the 2A East Division.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne

* Most of us know that pregnancy has its challenges, but one you might not be aware of is that expectant moms attract roughly twice as many mosquito bites. It’s believed this is because they exhale more carbon dioxide and have higher body temperatures than those who aren’t pregnant. * A Chinese father hired virtual assassins to kill his son’s World of Warcraft character, hoping that would stop the young man from playing after he’d quit his day job.

After the former Soviet Union boycotted the games, it turned out to be quite a costly promotion. * The French duo Daft Punk took their name from a negative review they received from “Melody Maker” magazine regarding a trio of which they’d previously been members. * Between 1887 and 1950, American weather forecasters were not allowed to use the word “tornado.” * A particularly pessimistic fan of football’s Cleveland Browns requested in his obituary that six members of the team serve as pallbearers at his funeral so “the Browns could let him down one last time.” * In the early 1970s, the first Nike shoe was inspired by ... a waffle. RICH STRIKE WINS KENTUCKY DERBY PHOTO BY SCOTT SERIO

No one gave Rich Strike much of a chance to win the 148th running of the Kentucky Derby, not even the announcer calling the race, until a relatively unknown jockey guided a horse anyone could have bought for $30,000

last September up the rail to shock everyone in the biggest horse race in the world. The stunning victory by the 80-1 shot, who looked great all week while training next to much more heralded thoroughbreds, capped a week on the

“Run for the Roses” can be a grind of waking up every morning at 5am and heading out in the dark to find the moments that are part of the journey that ends up crowning horse racing’s next superstar. In year’s past, horses with Maryland connections like Native Dancer or Cecil County trainee Animal Kingdom won on the first Saturday in May. This year’s winner had no local connections

beyond the photographers who photographed him working out in the mornings all week long and then as he stormed down the stretch for a jaw-dropping win. Take a photographic journey with Team Serio into what life is like on the backstretch at Churchill Downs during Derby Week and then during the two biggest days of horse racing in Kentucky – Oaks and Derby Day.

Tyler Garvin’s name placed on Richardson Park State Champions Sign - CONTINUED FROM B-1 -

Champion for Rising Sun High School in 1996. The last name to be added to the town sign was Anthony Cimorosi. Cimorosi was State Wrestling Champion in 2012. Now, ten years later, he is one of the coaches who has been working with the young grappler for several years. Garvin had a record of 43 wins and zero losses this year on his way to his first High School State Championship. His goal is to win again his Junior and Senior year so his name can be on the town sign three times. The only person to be listed on the sign is RS Wrestler Matt Jackson who won the State Championship in 2006. 2007 and 2008.
