CREATING NEW TRADITIONS Christmas Like Never Before

Veronika Schweizer-Sigrist 15 March 1947 - 9 October 2020

Farewell, Veronika

It is with profound sadness and heavy heart that we have to bid farewell to Veronika forever as she has embarked on her last journey. We will miss her dearly. Our thoughts go out to her family during this time of bereavement. On behalf of the Swiss Club, Rolf Gerber President

In lieu of flowers, the Swiss Club made a donation of 1500CHF to Kantha Popha Children’s Hospital of Cambodia, founded by Dr Beat Richner, in loving memory of Veronika.

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Suzanne Lauridsen Editor, Relax

Dear Members, Wow. It’s Christmas again – and yet, it will be a Christmas like none before it. As a long-term expat, I remember the frantic festive rush to pack bags, catch planes, check in to a family member’s guest room or hotel at home, and begin the social whirlwind of catching up. It was wonderful. But it was exhausting. I always felt like a needed a holiday upon my return to Singapore. For obvious reasons, this Christmas will be a much more sedate affair, with travel out of the question except for a small minority. Let’s not lament the changes, but make the most of them. After all, spending more time with fewer people can often mean higher quality time. There is of course no reason not to send your love and wishes around the world. Thanks to those wonderful things called WhatsApp, Skype and Zoom, we may be physically distant but we can remain closely connected to our loved ones. Cherish every moment together, even if it’s only on a computer screen. And look forward to that promised land of a post-pandemic world where we can be reunited, in person. Meanwhile, make the most of your wonderful Club. Stay fit, eat well, and have a thoughtful, meaningful and merry Christmas! Yours,

A Word from the

Committee

Throughout this turbulent year, the Swiss Club has been steadfast and resilient, as we have always put you, our Members, at the heart of our organisation. With that in mind, do stay tuned to our various marketing communication platforms as we explore more sports activities in the Club.

Dear Members, It has been four months since the Club reopened. The Swiss Club Committee would like to sincerely thank you for your continued support and understanding during these past few months. As the Sports Sub-committee member, I am heartened to see sports activities regain momentum so quickly after reopening. Tennis courts, swimming pools and the gym have been constantly full. In addition, we have added on to the sports offerings in the Club with the introduction of basketball and trekking. Active Fitness also offers a wide selection of group classes, which include bootcamp, spinning, pilates, Zumba, TRX and more. To those that are here to enjoy the facilities, please rest assured that the surfaces are disinfected hourly for peace-of-mind. Furthermore, every Member that enters has their temperature checked and is issued with a wristband. During this period, as everywhere else in Singapore, facilities such as tennis courts have been running at full capacity. I seek your kind understanding in exercising patience, as we have to balance the interests of Members who want to take tennis lessons with those who wish to play for leisure. Please bear in mind that the Club does not have the manpower to supervise the tennis courts regularly. It is up to Members to follow the rules and respect each other.

Let us exercise consideration and work together to ensure a fair sporting environment for every Member. We are aware that there were some issues with the booking system lately and we are looking into different options for a better solution. As we approach the end of 2020, let us look forward to 2021. Our newly renovated clubhouse will be reopened as we celebrate our 150th anniversary. The 150th Anniversary Committee has been hard at work planning the year-long calendar of events to commemorate this joyous occasion, though it is highly likely that limited group sizes will still apply. We look forward to everyone’s enthusiastic support! Throughout this turbulent year, the Swiss Club has been steadfast and resilient, as we have always put you, our Members, at the heart of our organisation. With that in mind, do stay tuned to our various marketing communication platforms as we explore more sports activities in the Club. Thank you for being part of our Swiss Club family. I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

Thank You for Your th Logo Designs

150 Anniversary We applaud and appreciate the efforts of Members Jessica Vonrueti and Emily Foelmli for their submissions for original logo designs to commemorate our 150th Anniversary in 2021. We are pleased to share these two submissions and excerpts from the designers’ rationales. The logo was designed to look traditional and engaging. Cows are representative of Swiss peoples’ roots, tradition and heritage, while the dirndl-wearing woman conveys the notion of the preservation of national values. In addition, the shape of a circle represents the idea of unity, community and love.

The different colours of confetti represent the diversity of the Members as well as bubbles of joy that we can experience through sport, dining and other activities at the Club. I am very excited to celebrate this incredible anniversary, and I feel very privileged to have been born in Singapore and to have grown up at the Club.

A Message from the

General Manager

With Yuletide festivities just around the corner, it is once again time for hanging up the stockings, decorating the Christmas tree, (socially distanced) cheers and gatherings with loved ones. Mark your diaries for our annual Christmas Tree Light Up on 6 December, which has been made even more special this year by our partnership with Children’s Wishing Well in this season of gifting.

Dear Members, What a year. It has been an emotional rollercoaster ride, to say the least. As we bid farewell to 2020, we are looking forward to 2021 with much anticipation and enthusiasm. On behalf of the Committee, Club management and staff, I would like to sincerely thank you for your continued support during these challenging times. Another highlight will be our ever-popular Christmas Day Brunch, this year reinvented with a new format encompassing Government guidelines. We will also be hosting an additional Christmas Eve Dinner session to accommodate more Members due to the reduced capacity at our restaurants. Should you choose to feast like a king in the comfort of your

home, seasonal Christmas specials and gourmet takeaway options will also be available. You’ll find more details on page 13. As the year-end celebrations gather momentum, I seek your cooperation and understanding as we gear up to what may be our busiest festive season ever with most of our Members utilising the Club’s facilities. A little graciousness and tolerance goes a long way towards making our Club a fun and enjoyable environment for everyone. Hopefully we will all soon be enjoying the liberties and luxuries of Phase 3 at the Club. May I take this opportunity to wish all Members and their families, and my fellow colleagues, a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year. Season’s greetings!

Best Regards,

Greetings from the Ambassador of Switzerland

Dear Members of the Swiss Club, Dear Readers of ‘Relax’, The year 2020 has without a doubt been a disruptive and unexpected one. The global pandemic has imposed a strain on our daily lives and required the restructuring of many aspects of life – social, political and cultural. On behalf of the Embassy, I would like to convey our sympathy to all those who have been severely impacted by this health crisis. I would also like to express my gratitude and thank all those at the frontline who continue to fight for the wellbeing of the community. As we are approaching the end of the year, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the year that was, and to share with you some highlights and moments of positivity. The quick turn of events encouraged us to apply creative thinking and further embrace digitalisation

10

to continue to foster socio-cultural relationships between Singapore and Switzerland. Around two and a half weeks into the Circuit Breaker, the Village Zermatt projected a giant Singapore flag onto the majestic Matterhorn mountain. It served as a symbol of solidarity, hope and optimism. This beautiful moment triggered positive responses and moved people emotionally all over the world, reminding us that there is strength in unity. Despite the challenges brought about by COVID-19, we took part in successful virtual experiences that nurtured an increasingly important sense of community. Although most of the planned events that we had been looking forward to had to be cancelled, I am proud of the number

and quality of webinars, virtual festivals, film screenings and digital events that we were able to host or engage in. In the science and education field, the Embassy participated in a number of thought-provoking and insightful webinars including: ‘The Science for Humanity’ in partnership with SG Innovate, a discussion on ‘Big Data, AI and Industry 4.0’, and ‘Food Innovation’, as well as moderating three conversations with top Swiss universities at the annual Study in Europe Fair. This year, we also celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC) – a flourishing partnership that strives to develop solutions for some of the most pressing challenges to urban sustainability, resilience and health.

S W I S S

In addition, SEC launched a number of exciting new activities including a brand new programme entitled ‘Future Health Technologies’, and strengthened research streams that extend to other geographical areas. Nurturing and strengthening inter-cultural exchanges between Switzerland and Singapore continues to be of utmost importance to us. Just before the Circuit Breaker, we took part in the opening of `Tomorrow is an Island`, an exhibition at the Nanyang Technological University School of Art, Design and Media (NTU ADM) Gallery, which showcased a magnificent Swiss-Singaporean artist-led project. More recently, we were a proud partner of Archifest 2020 from 25 September to 31 October. Under this year’s theme ‘Architecture Saving OUR World’, the festival celebrated new ideas and responsible designs that benefit ecology and humanity – addressing climate change, public health, social equity and cultural continuity. I enjoyed being part of the jury for the ‘Doodle Art Competition’ and admired the flourishing talent here in the Singapore community. In partnership with Projector Plus, we screened ‘Architecture of Infinity’, joining Swiss director Christoph Schaub’s journey of discovery through sacred buildings and sharing his fascination with their specific uses of space. Another highlight of the year was of course our digital festivities for Swiss National Day on 1 August, which we celebrated with you through a bountiful lineup of live broadcasts, musical

performances and interactive activities. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all participants for joining us for our digital celebration, as well as to all of our partners for helping make this event such a successful and special one. We’ve experienced changes here at the Embassy, too, as we said goodbye to some team members and extended a warm welcome to a number of new faces. As the situation has become more stable, we are slowly getting back to normalcy. After months of working from home, followed by split team shifts, we are now happy to resume our work back on embassy grounds with safe distancing measures and appropriate safeguards in place. For our latest updates, we invite you to follow us on our Facebook page (@SwissEmbassySingapore) and my Twitter (@SwissAmbSGP).

This elegant wine has an intense yellow-green hue, evoking the colour of ripe grapes at harvest time, and a balanced acidity. Its bouquet is reminiscent of tropical fruits such as banana, passionfruit and pineapple, while aging in oak barrels imparts notes of coconut and vanilla.

Deep red in colour, with bright purple undertones, this medium-bodied red is dinstinguished by a good structure and velvety tannins. Aromas of ripe red fruits such as plums and raspberries are enriched with the complexity of delicate chocolate and vanilla notes from aging in oak.

Welcome to the Swiss Club’s First-ever

Social Trekking Group

O

n Friday 9 October 2020, we kicked off our inaugural social trek. If all goes according to plan, the Social Trekking Group will become a permanent special interest group at the Club.

DESTINATION MACRITCHIE RESERVOIR On the morning of our first trek, a group of 15 assembled at the Swiss Club at 9am. They comprised six team leaders, namely Swiss Club staff Aaron, Riza, Elvis, Fabian, Apple and Apple’s son; and nine energetic Swiss Club Members. Three pairs of team leaders each led a group of three Members, observing social distancing measures all the way. Our trusty trekkers covered close to 13km on foot, from the Club all the way to MacRitchie Reservoir. It was a great experience, where Members could meet new friends and friendly staff from our management team. WE WANT YOU! We are tentatively planning our next trek in November, at a date to be confirmed, and look forward to exploring the lush trails of our sunny Singapore with many more of our Members. Check the Club’s e-newsletter for updates, and do join our friendly group of happy trekkers!

18

10 REASONS TO JOIN THE SOCIAL TREKKING GROUP 1. Make new friends 2. Build strength (it’s great for your core, glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves) 3. Improve your cardiovascular fitness 4. Explore Singapore’s gorgeous greenery and exotic flora 5. Enjoy rare wildlife sightings (besides a monkey or ten, you might glimpse a lesser mouse-deer, a wild boar or two, and even a civet cat) 6. Reduce stress and anxiety as you commune with nature 7. Release endorphins and other ‘happy hormones’ 8. Improve your life skills by setting goals and achieving them (a transferable skill that can positively impact other areas of your life) 9. Earn some calorie credits for an after-trek drink or slap-up meal 10. It’s free of charge

Christmas Light Up! Sunday 6 December 2020, 7pm A switch is flicked and the Swiss Club comes alive with twinkling fairy lights! The night will be set to music, and combined with a charitable event in partnership with our nominated charity, Children’s Wishing Well. Ten children under the care of Wishing Well will enjoy dinner at the Club and receive a gift before the light-up proper. This magic annual ritual is free for all, and the memories are priceless. May your Christmas be merry and bright, and your spirits light!

The Swiss Club has pledged to sponsor 40 gifts for Wishing Well children. Look out for details of how to donate a gift in your weekly e-newletter – and enjoy the blessing of giving. Founded in 2002, this worthy cause was honoured with the Charity Transparency Award 2019 accorded by MCCY. It helps children from low-income families and disadvantaged backgrounds, whose parents could be unemployed, ill, have abandoned them, or are incarcerated in jail, and currently serves the needs of more than 1,000 children and youth each year. Its signature programme, Children Enrichment Programme, is a holistic child development programme operated from three different sites – Clementi, Eunos and Jurong East. 19

Corrective Exercise Programmes

ip, knee and neck pain are among the main physical problems faced by office workers who spend the majority of their waking hours sitting in front of a desk. Even with ergonomic office chairs that provide sufficient back support and facilitate good posture, the load on the spine and hips will still take its toll.

OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS In addition to sitting for long hours, the daily use of handphones causes us to look downwards several times a day, which in turn causes stress and pressure on the discs in our neck and our trapezius muscles. This can lead to neck aches, which may often lead to migraines. Furthermore, in this post-COVID world that we are living in, we are stuck at home a lot more than usual. Hence many of us are spending a lot more time on our couches and beds, which are clearly not designed for working on. This too can intensify the pressure on our spines and the associated feeling of tightness. AN ACTION PLAN Here at Active Fitness, we specialise in working with people who have back, neck and hip pain. On top of receiving formal training in corrective exercise programmes, we also have years of experience in easing the aches and pains caused by the occupational hazards of everyday work. If pain is eroding

S

ince the start of the basketball programme in September this year we have been working closely with the Swiss Club to kickstart social basketball and various programmes for different age groups.

A SPORT FOR ALL AGES To date, two amazing groups of budding basketballers, aged 6 to 12 and 13 to 18 years old, have been faithfully turning up each week to practise their skills on court. The good news is, we have just brought in a junior hoop to encourage younger kids to join us! Meanwhile, we have been loving our training sessions at the start of each week. It’s a great buzz to see so many sports being practised at once. Thanks to all our young players who have been diligently working on their ball handling, dribbling and shooting skills. LOOKING FORWARD As we are delighted to see interest for basketball picking up, do look out for details of upcoming events in the weekly Swiss Club

… And the Children Went Wild! T

NEWS FROM THE

his year, our Early Childhood department celebrated Children’s Day with a ‘wild party’ and a timetable of special activities.

CHILDREN’S DAY AROUND THE WORLD Children’s Day is a date celebrated annually in honour of children. The date of celebration varies by country, and traditionally 1 October is the day on which it is celebrated in Singapore. Children’s Day takes place not only to celebrate childhood, but also to remind everyone of the issues faced by children around the world. A WILD AND WONDERFUL PARTY All students and teachers dressed up as wild animals or rangers, in accordance with the Wild Party theme. The timetable was packed with drawing, face painting, dancing and playing. In addition, the teachers invited Ms Julia, who works for the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre, to speak about the wild animals in Singapore. ACRES is a non-profit company that helps and rescues endangered wild animals in Singapore. Ms Julia showed our students various types of snakes, explained their behaviour, and advised how children should react if they ever see snakes. To top it all off, the children had a wild time making their own popcorn. The kids had a wonderful Children’s Day!

Hi, Khai!

O

ur Security and Facilities Executive Khairudin Bin Bujang, affectionately known as Khai, has been with the Club, one way or another, since 2015.

FROM CONTRACT TO FULL-TIME Khai first worked at the Club on contract with his ex-company for three years from 2015 to 2018. He joined full-time at Aaron’s request in November 2019, and hasn’t looked back. A youthful and fit-looking 56-year-old, Khai is married with three grown children and two grandchildren. In his spare time, he likes to go cycling or bowling with his two grandchildren, aged 10 and 7 years. OUR SAFETY IS HIS PRIORITY At the Swiss Club, Khai oversees two other security guards and assists Samy, our Facilities Manager. His team are

responsible for Members’ safety, and also take care of the Swiss School. He constantly watches out for children and adults, and keeps an eye out for potential safety hazards. He intervenes in minor disputes, and prepares accident reports when mishaps occasionally occur. WORK WITH A BUILT-IN WORKOUT Khai enjoys his twice-daily patrol around the Club. “This walk gives me my daily exercise. I get to enjoy nature and keep healthy,” he shared. “My daily steps count is usually around 5,000 steps!” When Khai or a colleague encounter the odd python and cobra, they promptly call ACRES to capture and relocate the unwelcome visitor. However, squirrels and chicken are welcome! OKTOBERFEST MEMORIES A highlight of Khai’s working year is being part of the team behind Oktoberfest. “I’ve covered three Oktoberfests so far, and hopefully it’ll be back next year. I’m touched that Members remember me and say, ‘You’re back!’ – it’s very touching,” he shared. A MESSAGE TO MEMBERS Khai thanks Members for cooperating with the current safety protocol, and hopes that the Club will continue to remain a safe haven for all.

Sweet Nothings by the Pool Saturday 13 February 2021

Creating New Christmas Traditions

B

y this time last year, most of our expatriate Members would have booked their flights home for Christmas. But for reasons that need no explaining, this is a year like no other. Since Christmas is likely to be less hectic without the travel, it’s a great time to start some new festive family traditions. Here’s some celebration inspiration. GIFTING IS SHIFTING While COVID-19 made us all tighten our belts (and possibly let them out if you’ve been overdoing the comfort eating), ‘buying less and buying better’ was becoming the new norm long before the pandemic hit. Thanks in part to Greta Thunberg, good parenting and great teachers, young people around the world are waking up to the pointlessness and the perils of mindless consumption. If you have older kids who are aspiring to living more sustainably, obviously your gift-giving choices

should support their personal ethics. However, if you have younger kids who still almost burst with barely contained excitement at the sight of multiple gifts under the tree, why not start implementing the ‘four gift rule’? Buy them: Something you want, something you need, something to wear, and something to read We cannot claim originality here. (It’s actually been trending on social media for almost a decade.) But we think it’s a great idea. It

28

I N T E R E S T

doesn’t necessarily imply frugality (hey, a Lamborghini classifies as ‘something you want’), but it does require selectiveness. Call it mindful shopping, if you like.

Dear Santa,

WRITE A LETTER TO SANTA If you decide to go the ‘four gift rule’ route and your children are still at the magical age of believing in Santa, ask them to think about the four ‘want/need/ wear/read’ gifts they’re wishing for, and write a letter to the jolly old man in red. While you’re at it, ask them to tell Santa whether they’ve been mostly naughty or nice. A little self-reflection never hurt anyone.

I want a pair of yoga pants made out of recycled trash from Girlfriend Collective, I need a new watering can, I would like to wear a new pair of wooden sunglasses from Truwood, and I would finally like to read ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ by Margaret Atwood – not a hard copy but a download on my Kindle, please…

DIY DECORATIONS If you’re staying home, decorate it. But don’t be a slouch and simply head to a department store and spend a small fortune on environmentally unfriendly baubles and tinsel. Head instead to an art and craft shop and stock up on fancy paper, crepe paper, adhesive pom poms, glitter glue, coloured felt and any pretty materials that catch your eye. We love Art Friend – especially the flagship store in Bras Basah Complex on Beach Road. We challenge you to walk in with a list and buy nothing more than the items on it. Better still, repurpose stuff that’s hanging around the house. The Internet is teeming with amazing ideas. We love Coffee Filter Garlands, Paper Mache Christmas Baubles (great for using up old recycled wrapping paper) and Spoon Mini Trees (finally, something to do with all those bulk plastic spoons you’re ashamed of even buying in the first place). Google them!

MAKE A DAY OF MAKING DECORATIONS. Clear the dining table and line it with newspaper or old stained sheets. Then get crafty. The expressions of pride on your little crafters’ faces, when they see their handiwork hung and drawing compliments, will be priceless.

Clear the dining table and line it with newspaper or old stained sheets. Then get crafty.

HANDMADE CHRISTMAS CARDS… This is an extension of DIY decorations, really. You can use the materials left over from your decoration-making bee, plus some art card. A great way to reuse old Christmas cards is to cut out elements and make mixed media collages. Hand-torn paper over art card, with another cutout element on top, looks very arty and is easy for little kids to master.

CHRISTMAS IS (NOT JUST) FOR KIDS We’ve all heard it said so many times – Christmas is for kids. But in fact, Christmas is for adults, too. The childhood memories that we retain into adulthood shape the narratives of our lives. It’s called ‘autobiographical memory’. Christmas is a chance to channel those fond childhood memories of Christmases past, and help make some memories for the little ones in your life.

30

I N T E R E S T

IT WON’T BE ‘LIKE BEFORE’ Though Christmas is supposedly a time of joy, it can also be a time of what some psychologists call ‘nostalgic moaning’ – that tendency to perceive things as inferior to the way they were in the past. For example: “Within the last half-century, this annual time of festivity has lost much of its original mirth and hospitality.” Can you believe that this miserable lament appeared in the editorial of The Times way back in 1790? So don’t be a Grinch (leave that to Jim Carrey – see ‘Christmas Movie Night’) and get into a Christmas mood. Granted, it won’t be like last Christmas – it might even be better!

… AND CRACKERS… Save your toilet rolls and make Christmas crackers. They may not have the paper fuses (that ‘gunpowder’ smell is a little disturbing anyway), but they still provide the thrill of a friendly tug-of-fun. Fill them with candies or little ‘IOU’ notes – a back massage, breakfast in bed, an original poem, etc. … AND WRAPPERS! For DIY wrapping paper, plain brown paper covered in rubber-stamped patterns, finished with red and white twine, always looks stylish. Order your rubber stamps from an online craft shop or check out the seasonal boxed sets at Kikki K. If you really want to go to town, buy a few rolls of fancy craft or washi tape.

Don’t leave the gift-wrapping to the last minute and do it all yourself – make an occasion of it and rope in the family to lend a hand. (Obviously, gifts from Santa are wrapped behind the scenes in Santa’s workshop.)

DECORATE A GINGERBREAD HOUSE This might sound like hard work, but not if you cheat and buy a DIY kit from a supermarket. The gingerbread comes in pre-baked panels and all you need to do is assemble and decorate it – not unlike those model planes made out of balsa wood that older Members may recall from their childhoods. To avoid spats, allocate a panel per child. If your offspring are prone to hyper-competitiveness (oh yes, we all know that), be careful to dish out the praise in equal servings.

Decorating a gingerbread house might sound like hard work, but not if you cheat and buy a DIY kit from a supermarket.

IT’S BEGINNING TO SOUND A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS… Thanks to Spotify, this one’s really easy. Ask every family member to choose 4 or 6 or 10 songs (any number is fine, but be egalitarian to avoid accusations of favouritism – a bane of many mothers’ lives). Then compile your official 2020 Christmas Family Playlist. Play it on a portable speaker or through your high-end sound system. If your kids are musical or sporting, you might even be able to pull off a family singalong. Either way, your Christmas has its own soundtrack now!

CHRISTMAS MOVIE NIGHT Most families already have their favourite Christmas movie. Whether you’re a diehard fan of the ‘Home Alone’ franchise, crack up at Will Ferrell’s ‘evergreen’ performance in ‘Elf’ or never tire of Jim Carrey’s manic meanie turn in ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’, play it again. Watch two or three in a row. And do it every year. Never mind that you know what’s coming next. Remembering the lines by heart and saying them out loud is half the fun. CELEBRATE AT THE SWISS CLUB Pardon the soft-sell, but when you’re far from your big noisy extended family, dressing up, going out and being among people really does help to jolly things along. This year, the Swiss Club is hosting two lavish celebrations with live gourmet stations. For obvious reasons, self-serve buffet-style dining is out. There’s even a kids’ menu for little ones who prefer spag’ bol’ and nuggets to more grownup gastronomy. Book your tables early to avoid disappointment. HAVE A THOUGHTFUL CHRISTMAS Christmas is traditionally a time to think of those less fortunate. You could actually ditch the gift-giving altogether and ask each family member to nominate a charity and donate the money you would have spent on gifts accordingly.

Just a thought. Or you could spend some time volunteering. There are dozens of worthy charities and social enterprises you can find online, though opportunities for hands-on volunteering may be affected by the ongoing situation. Of course, there are many ways to be thoughtful. You may have a helper who will be missing her family terribly at this time of year. Or you might know of a relative newcomer to Singapore who never had a chance to establish a social network due to the pandemic. Reach out to them. Kindness is catching – hopefully even more so than the coronavirus. Happy Christmas with a difference!
