Bowls made from nets

Sustainable dog brand, Tangle, launched the Tangle Dog Bowl, crafted out of end of life fishing nets, on the 1st of July. The brand is on a mission to put an end to ghost nets, lost or abandoned fishing nets, from entering our oceans and killing marine life through a range of high-end sustainable dog accessories made from recycled fishing nets in the UK.

Named the silent killer of our seas, nearly half of the plastic in the ocean comes from ghost fishing nets that have been discarded in the sea. These nets are often made from harsh plastics that take centuries to degrade and are killing millions of marine species every year.

Xavier Warburton, co-founder of Tangle started the business in 2022, concerned by the risk ghost nets were causing to marine life, they wanted to combat this problem in an innovative way, repurposing the nets into longlasting, premium dog products.

Xavier said: “These awful ghost nets make up nearly half of all ocean plastics, and our precious marine life is being needlessly killed because of these floating death traps. Tangle’s helping animal lovers save marine life in the oceans, we’re now on track to stop 526 tennis courts worth (137,800 sqm) of

Mr Bug Wins

Mr Bug dared to dream and against all odds became the latest winner of Global Good’s Product of the Year category, a sustainable-centric award highlighting not only those businesses blazing a trail for purpose-built sustainability, those scalable businesses with the growth potential to achieve meaningful world impact.

Having already won a coveted ethical award from Good Shopping Guide and a much sought-after Innovate bursary for their pioneering work on insect protein, the Global Good accolade provides Mr Bug with the proverbial icing on the cake.

Mr Bug co-founder, Conal Cunningham, said: “For all our business’s light touch and informal tone, its clear to see that our big idea (sustainable insect protein)’ extends far beyond healthier snacking for dogs; into human food consumption. That said, pet treats is a highly competitive marketplace

which provides all the perfect touch points needed to test and fine-tune our business’s wider farming vision, (using less land, feed and water) to create

fishing nets becoming ghost nets this year.”

Against a backdrop of soaring veterinary costs which have driven many owners to stop seeing a vet altogether, a brand-new pet clinic which opened in June aims to shake up the industry by offering cost-effective primary care for the capital’s cats and dogs.

Mindful of the cost-of-living crisis which threatens to make pet ownership unaffordable for many, Snoots Vets, which opened in Camden Walk, Islington, wants to change the way Londoners think about the way they look after their furry family members.

Operating more like a GP surgery for cats and dogs, the business is founded on the principle of keeping pets well and providing them with everything they need for a long, healthy life.

For £33 a month, members receive an all-inclusive care package that covers the cost of all jabs, lab tests, x-rays, travel certificates, neutering and unlimited health checks for their pet.

Nearly two-thirds (66%) of pet owners surveyed by Snoots Vets say they have put off visiting the vet because they are worried about the cost. In London, this is the case for a staggering 84% of owners. And worryingly almost half of London pet owners (48%) have admitted to

giving their pets human over-the-counter medicine to save on vet bills.

Founder of Snoots Vet, Jonathan Moyal, said: “Traditionally at a vets, you visit for a problem, and quite often, see the bills rack up. Things such as X-rays, travel documents and neutering can cost hundreds of pounds and we know that the worry of these costs is leading some pet owners to simply avoid the treatment their pet needs.

“We wanted to create a service that supports pet owners with a simple flat rate fee, and you know everything that is covered in the price. Our clinic acts as your pet’s GP. We’re here to help prevent problems before they happen, counsel you and help you manage your veterinary care choices when things get messy.

“We want to be there for your furry family members throughout their life, so you get as many good years as possible with them. Everything is set up so you can come in whenever you want, and you

won’t get another bill for a visit – ever!”

King’s Award for Enterprise

An international pet food specialist run by three ex-GB athletes is celebrating after becoming one of the first companies in the world to receive a business award from King Charles III.

Podium Pet Products has been honoured with the King’s Award for Enterprise 2023. It was set up by former World Cup Skeleton athlete Carina Evans and International Polo players Andrew Hine and Nick Evans.

The company, whose popular brands include Dog Rocks and Be:Loved, has been recognised for its excellence in international trade by the new King.

Podium Pet Products is one of 148 organisations to receive the first-ever King’s Award for Enterprise. Podium Pet Products bosses received the same recognition in 2016 for its popular product Dog Rocks, when it was called the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

The honours programme, now in its 57th year, is the most respected business awards in the country, with successful companies able to use the esteemed King’s Awards Emblem for the next five years.

Carina Evans, Co-Founder & CEO of Podium Pet Products, said: “This is a tremendous honour for the company and recognition of the hard work, innovation and inspiration of a talented team.

“Having achieved the Queen’s Award for Enterprise seven years ago was marvellous, and now to become one of the first UK companies to be honoured with a King’s Award is extra special.

“We are absolutely over the moon to have received such an accolade. We have always prided ourselves on our ability to expand our relationships with customers and partners whilst providing an excellent level of service,” she added.

The full integration of Be:Loved into the portfolio prompted Carina to change the company name from Dog Rocks UK to Podium Pet Products with Andrew and Nick.

Carina said: “Export is now a joy but to begin with it was a minefield, especially in America. Europe is becoming less traditional and regional with younger English-speaking buyers and savvy marketeers so therefore a more attractive market to us as well.

“Being honoured with a King’s Award

for Enterprise for International Trade 2023 will help us grow the business in all our markets, and it is an accolade to be treasured.”

Johnson’s builds team

Johnson’s Veterinary Products, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of pet healthcare products, has appointed Matthew Gwynn BA, MA, ACIM., to the role of Assistant Sales and Digital Marketing Manager and Jack Franks BA (Hons) to the role of Assistant Purchasing & Procurement Manager.

The names will be familiar to those who know the familyowned business, as 32-year-old Matthew is the son of current Managing Director Paul Gwynn and 26-year-old Jack is the son of current Sales Director, Nick Franks.

Both Matthew and Jack forged successful careers before being invited to join the business personally by former Chairman David Johnson, who sadly passed away in July 2022. Recognising the importance of maintaining the firm’s independence, he was keen the next generation should join and bring fresh ideas and skills from outside the pet trade.

Johnson’s Managing Director Paul Gwynn commented: “The arrival of Matthew and Jack has immediately given the business a lift and David would have been immensely happy and proud had

he lived to witness their first day here at Johnson’s.

“Our identity as a family business has been central to the success of Johnson’s for more than 100 years. This decision to recruit from our families is about ensuring we have the ambition, commitment and enthusiasm to continue the firm’s independent future.

“Both Matthew and Jack spent a lot of school and university holidays working here at Johnson’s, in the office and the warehouse, when their passion for the business was ignited. For everyone within the business, it’s like welcoming colleagues back to work.

“Matthew brings with him a successful track-record in sales and digital marketing and is already freshening the way we talk about our products and our brand, listening closely to what our customers want from us. I may be biased,

but already the signs are incredibly positive.

“Similarly, Jack had established his career in aerospace procurement and will bring new ideas to help us better meet the changing needs of our customers. As his grandfather, there was a unique sense of pride for David Johnson when Jack agreed to join the business and secure the family connection.

“We recognise the need for youthful insight and learning, to take Johnson’s forward to face the growing challenges of the modern global commercial environment.

“Recruiting the next generation of family members into the business provides stability and continuity for us and importantly, for our customers, while ensuring Johnson’s builds on its heritage and success of the past 100 years.”

Leucillin Skincare

Georgina is the Marketing Director and co-founder of Leucillin Antiseptic Skincare. Often found on event stands and conferences throughout the year, we wanted to speak with her to find out more about Leucillin.

What can you tell me about Leucillin?

Leucillin is a unique skincare solution, which cleverly mimics the body’s own immune system, Leucillin replicates the leukocytes (white blood cells) naturally produced chemical used to fight infection caused by invading pathogens, giving you a powerful antimicrobial for germ control which is gentle to the skin.

Leucillin is a highly versatile userfriendly topical spray suitable for use on all. Leucillin’s soothing and calming formula helps manage the symptoms of allergy suffers and kills germs that can cause, irritation, red, itchy, flaky or smelly problematic skin as well as suitable in ears and eyes.

What does Leucillin provide to support the dog grooming industry?

Leucillin is a Groomer’s “Best Friend” for everything skin health. It is an on-hand, safe effective insurance for all concerns of the skin, from protecting against clipper rash for those tougher grooms particularly around the hygiene areas and other delicate skin, cleaning gunky eyes to minor nicks and cuts. Leucillin can be used on all breeds, species and skin sensitivities, does not sting or stain and has the reassurance of being natural to the body.

For Groomers it is an excellent additional sale after a groom as an easy-to-use tool for your customers to care for the skin, ears and eyes of their pet between grooms. Leucillin is cost-effective, has great margins, small minimum orders and free promotional literature.

What makes Leucillin stand out amongst the crowd?

It’s versatility and it’s incredible efficacy to get the job done! Understanding a little about Log Reduction helps you really appreciate why:

Log Reduction stands for a 10-fold (one decimal) or 90% reduction in numbers of live bacteria. For example, a wound containing 1 million bacteria using a standard Log 3 antiseptic of 99.9% effective, out of your 1 million bacteria 10,000 will be left alive to continue to grow, multiply and potentially develop resistance, after an application of Leucillin Log 7 no bacteria would survive.

No bacteria means no resistance, which means faster skin recovery.

If someone wanted to find out more about Leucillin, where could they find you?

We pride ourselves on our customer service, within office hours there is always someone happy to pick up the phone, answer queries and take orders, we use next-day delivery so you’ll never have to wait. You can also contact us through email, Facebook and Instagram or if you happen to be in Dorset, customers are very welcome to pop into our HQ in Crossways for a cuppa!

Are there any general thoughts you’d like to share with our readers?

We wholesale with Christies Direct and Groomers for the convenience of Groomers wishing to add Leucillin to their salon order however we are always happy to offer the flexibility of direct accounts. We have a small, manageable minimum order quantity, free point of sale, promotional and training literature and can also offer Zoom training for your salon team of both how to use and sell Leucillin.

We recently introduced with Groomers very much in mind, a compact, attractive point-of-sale countertop case of our popular 60ml Leucillin Spray. Recommending the product means an additional add-on sale at a reasonable price point, which owners can take home and benefit from starting use straightaway.

We always love to hear from our customers so please do get in touch!

Summit Groomer Training Group

Summit Groomer Training Group is the UK’s largest City & Guilds approved centre with 28 Satellites already established with us, and more currently going through the audit process.

Summit Groomer Training Group Ltd works with groomer training schools to provide a link with City & Guilds and ensure the smooth running of the qualification process. From the registration of candidates, Summit provides the support, advice and communication needed to help and guide through to the final exams and certification.

The qualifications supported by Summit are the

City & Guilds:

• 7863-02 Level 2 Dog Grooming Assistant

• 7863-03 Level 3 Dog Grooming

Diploma

• 0146-20 Level 2 Pet Sitting

• 0146-21 Level 2 Dog Walking

Many hours were spent on the existing paperwork developing and producing more straightforward assignments and workbooks, not just for the students, but particularly for the tutors and assessors. This has proved to be a huge success with the training schools that are working with Summit, as the amount of time required to complete forms has been considerably reduced. As a result, tutors are able to spend more time with our future groomers and focus on sharing knowledge and experience to the full.

To deliver City & Guilds qualifications with Summit, there are certain criteria that are a requirement of both City & Guilds and Summit Groomer Training Group.

Minimum requirements:

• A recognised Level 3 Diploma in Grooming

• Five years grooming experience

• A recognised Level 3 teaching qualification e.g. PTTLS or equivalent

• Already hold, or are working towards, an assessor qualification

If you are an established groomer wishing to become a training centre, or an already established training centre looking to change qualification providers, you can apply for your centre to become a member of the Summit team. Simply email your interest and information to enquiries@ summitgroomertraininggroup.co.uk

The directors of Summit, Joanne Angus, Zoe Duffy and Alison Thomas also wrote a book in 2020 -What Every Professional Groomer Should Knowwhich has proved to be a huge success for those studying the grooming qualifications. It also provides easy to comprehend information for groomers just starting out as well as helpful advice for established groomers who want to improve on knowledge and technique. The book covers everything from health, body language and illnesses through to planning a business, scissor techniques and trimming and styling.

Haddon Training Dog Groomer Apprenticeships

Haddon Training is an award-winning training provider offering high-quality, tailored apprenticeships throughout England and Wales. For more than twenty-five years they have supported people within the animal care sector to develop and hone their skills through workbased learning.

Within dog grooming, the Haddon Training team is led by animal care curriculum specialist Kirsten Clements, and her team of Trainer Coaches, offering their expertise and knowledge to support their learners.

In 2020, Haddon Training was privileged to work alongside the Apprenticeship Institute to develop the long-awaited dog groomer apprenticeship standard. The apprenticeship was in huge demand within the sector, with the aim to provide stylists, assistant dog groomers, dog groomers, technicians and assistant stylists with the necessary skills and knowledge needed to become a fully qualified and competent dog groomer.

The apprenticeship launched in September 2021 and delivers training on bathing, drying, and styling for a range of breeds to meet industry requirements. It also teaches learners to develop their understanding of legislation and regulations, canine health including basic canine first aid and the importance of customer service.

To ensure that their knowledge and skills are embedded into their daily work, learners are required to successfully complete an end-point assessment (EPA) at the end of their apprenticeship. The EPA includes a practical examination to showcase the learner’s technical ability by grooming a dog under the four coat types (wool, wool-mix, wire, and silk). Haddon Training’s close support and thorough preparation for EPA has resulted in a one hundred percent achievement rate for their learners.

Millie and Maddison from Bella Jo Jo’s Dog Grooming Salon are two learners who have recently completed their apprenticeship with Haddon Training.

Millie said: “I chose an apprenticeship because I wanted to earn a wage while gaining a qualification. I’ve always loved dogs! I’ve learnt so much, from covering the range of coat types you work with in grooming to the different styles and anatomy.”

Maddison adds, “I made the decision to do an apprenticeship because I learn best in a practical environment. I knew I wanted to work with animals and found an apprenticeship in grooming. It’s the best decision I ever made and Kirsten and the team at Haddon Training have been very helpful in supporting me to achieve this. I have learnt a lot through my apprenticeship which has advanced my knowledge and skills”.

The Level 2 Dog Groomer Apprenticeship is highly beneficial to the industry because it allows new groomers to learn their trade whilst working closely with experienced, qualified groomers in a professional salon environment.

It creates a whole new generation of passionate and knowledgeable dog groomers who can share their knowledge with others who also want to learn.

Employers supported by Haddon Training also recognise the importance of having a qualified member of staff with an accredited qualification.

Heather from Spruce Dog Grooming said: “We’ve had multiple apprentices in the business now and have found them invaluable for several reasons. Firstly, they are an affordable way to grow your capacity and ultimately your business. Secondly, it is really rewarding to watch the apprentices, learn and grow, and see how far they have come by the time they qualify. Thirdly, it’s really good experience for other members of the team to coach, mentor, and support apprentices. And last, but not least apprentices bring a new angle on things, often a fresh perspective and challenging questions are just what a business needs,

and no one has a monopoly on good ideas! Being supported by a professional organisation like Haddon Training takes any of the worries of administration away from us too.”

Tim from Tip Top Dog Grooming whose learner has just achieved her apprenticeship with a distinction adds, “We have worked with Haddon Training over the past few years to help our new employees who wish to gain a formal qualification whilst training and working full time on the job. Working with us and Haddon Training enables the apprentice to have both practical and theoretical structure in their training. The course considers much more than just the practical aspects of grooming dogs, resulting in a more rounded and successful groomer. Some of our apprentices have gone on to run their own very successful dog grooming businesses and we are very proud to have been a part of their development. Haddon Training works openly with the employer and apprentice with clear communication, feedback and updates making the whole process smooth and engaging.”

Meet the team

Haddon Training’s team of Trainer Coaches have an abundance of collective experience within their specialist industries. They use these skills to support employers and learners throughout their apprenticeship journey, ensuring the best outcome possible. Alongside this, they also support learners to gain independence and self-confidence.

Kirsten Clements

For more than fifteen years, Kirsten has been working within the animal care industry. Beginning in veterinary care before qualifying as a professional dog groomer in 2014, Kirsten was pivotal in developing the current dog groomer apprenticeship standard with the IFA.

Kirsten says, “I am so proud to be a part of the animal care team at Haddon Training. The collective knowledge and experience of dog grooming that we hold enables us to have a clear understanding of the support that apprentices need to thrive in their roles. All the team are qualified to an advanced level of grooming and are trained to deliver the skills required to the highest standard.”

With a wealth of experience, including Salon Management, Katie has been in the dog grooming industry for over eight years. Katie says, “I really want to share my knowledge with people pursuing dog grooming as a career. I have so much enthusiasm for the training we provide and working with a range of salons across the South of England enables me to showcase the many benefits of apprentices. Apprenticeships give an employer the chance to share their passion of dog grooming and have someone to help build their business to become stronger and more successful than ever.”

Alissa Dale

With over seven years’ experience in the dog grooming industry, Alissa covers dog grooming in North England. Alissa says, “I have valuable experience grooming a wide variety of dogs, from every day pet trims to show cuts.

I’ve always loved working with animals, which influenced my decision to become a Trainer Coach. Teaching new groomers entering the industry and watching their talent grow is really rewarding.”

Top to Tail Clothing

We had a conversation with Tiffany, who is a dog groomer and the owner of a salon, as well as the owner/CEO of Top to Tail Clothing.

Hi Tiffany. What can you tell me about Top to Tail Clothing?

Top to Tail Clothing provides hairresistant clothing for pet professionals. We offer a smart, stylish range of tunics, leggings, trousers, aprons and gilets to keep pet professionals hair free, whilst working.

Our range comes in a choice of colours and styles. Our tunics come with detachable bows and lapels, in a range of beautiful colours, to match clients’ branding and individual style.

What unique products do you offer your clientele to help boost their business?

We also offer in-house embroidery, so we can add clients’ logos, and business names or affix onto their Clothing, again creating that smart professional appearance within their business.

To go with this, we also offer an “everyday range” of clothing that can have clients’ branding added to it, for that extra business awareness when out and about!

How has your business grown over the years and where do you see yourself going?

The business was started by Sophie, the previous owner several years ago, and I bought the business almost a year ago now.

Since taking on the business we have restocked and spent time getting to know the business inside out as well as working on plans for new ranges. We also have many other exciting plans to grow and expand the already successful business.

We’ve got a dedicated team at Top to Tail Clothing who are on hand to bring new ideas and processes to the business. You can find Top to Tail Clothing on Facebook and Instagram, or at www.toptotailclothing.co.uk

No matter where you go in the world, it’s not a secret that you’ll find an abundance of pets who, naturally, need to be groomed!

The industry is always growing, with new tech and styles appearing in every nook and cranny constantly. With the internet, we’re able to connect and share these ideas with our international friends in an instant!

Naturally, opening up a bigger world could potentially have some downfall. You’re going to want to try extra hard to stand out among the crowd, especially with the thousands upon thousands of groomers who are using the internet today!

What can make you unique? Some Asian-inspired pet colouring, or maybe even some classic American grooms may compliment your needs such as a Puppy Cut.

Creativity is important, and we find

that one of the best ways to get some extra inspiration for your dog grooming business is to seek international results.

Being unique isn’t as simple as simply finding a style and applying it to your work, however. It’s important to note that a lot of these magical international grooms can take years to master!

Different countries have varying levels of education for their grooms, with different standards that can take everything that one step further.

We recommend finding some events that are local to your and your business to start with. Or, if you’re feeling extra adventurous, maybe you could grab some friends and consider a trip abroad to really get the true travel feeling. Grooming events can be found all around the world, so take some time to find some that best suit your needs.

Don’t forget to take into consideration overseas brands too, as you never know what rewards spending a little extra on

P&P can do for your grooms.

Social media is obviously a key factor in the growth of the industry. We check almost every day on the latest trends and hashtags that international groomers are using, and recommend that you all do too to stay on top of the newest, furriest fads!

Now, with aloof the above information to process, let’s take a look at a couple of highlights from some different countries…

South Korea

In South Korea, there are over one hundred dog grooming schools with thousands of groomers graduating each year. The grooming industry is still growing there, and showing no signs of stopping!

China

In some places around the world, such as China, stylists are required to have

a licence. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it demonstrates your education through and through! There isn’t anything wrong with being thorough!

Brazil

In Brazil, you can find many dog grooming competitions, such as the Sergio Vallasanti Grooming Event. This contest started in 2000 when Sergio Villasanti brought it to Brazil for the first time!

Sergio is now an international speaker and judge within the dog grooming world.

Australia

In Australia, you can find two types of schools where groomers can train. There is the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or you can go private.

Depending on the groomer’s requirements, one or the other may suit different needs!

Japan

We love, love, LOVE Asian Fusion when it comes to dog grooming! Japan is most notable for this particular style of grooming. Take to Instagram to browse some competitions or portfolio pages if you’re on the lookout for some adorable Asian Fusion grooms!

In parts of Japan, a standard groom compared to Asian Fusion is actually considered uncommon!

AVID Plc

Richard Cratchley, sales manager at AVID Plc, has been working for the company for over 21 years. With a background in I.T infrastructure, sales and purchasing, he and the entire team at AVID have constantly strived to improve and innovate the microchipping sector.

The Business

AVID, one of the pioneers of creating the pet microchip technology, has been manufacturing, identifying and reuniting pets with their owners since 1985. The UK office was established over 30 years ago and the UK PETtrac database provides reunification of lost pets 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

As most readers will know, the pet microchips are a small device, about the size of a grain of rice, featuring a unique number to identify a variety of animals, from your dog or cat to alpaca and birds of prey; providing a permanent means of identification.

USPs

When compulsory microchipping was introduced in 2016 AVID made the decision to provide free electronic transfer of keepers to breeders and welfare organisations. There are no

charges to accept these transfers and no ongoing monthly or annual charges. We recognise the importance of having up-to-date contact details on the database, and as such PETtrac send email reminders to registered keepers as a prompt – after all, it can make the difference when it comes to trying to reunite a lost pet.

AVID has continually strived to be as sustainable as possible, long before the current trend. Our offices have been awarded low energy usage and we ensure all office materials used are sustainably sourced and recycled. Even our microchip product packaging can be recycled.

Additionally, over 99% of our MicroChip registrations are received electronically, making registration instant, more secure and significantly reducing the need for paper registration forms. Not only is this a more sustainable way to

receive registrations, but it also gives real peace of mind to the pet owner when they receive registration confirmation so much more efficiently.

Customer service has always been the most important aspect of our business with a number of our unique selling points directly attributed to providing a solution for our customers, based on their feedback or requirements. We are very much customer-driven, which is particularly apparent in our customer retention and loyalty.

After 30 years in business, our primary goal is still the successful reunification of lost pets.

On the move

Whether you’re a pet owner or a groomer, you understand that having a furry companion is a lot of work. People may find that this is almost exhausting so, luckily for some, we live in a time where groomers are able to travel to their clients rather than vice versa.

Selling points for your clients include the fact that it’s convenient, flexible and stress-free. It might even be worth transforming your business.

Convenience is one of the biggest selling points for your clients, so be sure to nail this one in when you’re pitching it to them! To them, not having to leave the house to get their pets groomed might be one of the most enticing things they’ve heard in 2023.

Explaining to them the ease of not having to get their dog in the car could be a game changer!

Speaking of convenience, imagine how irritating it can be for pet owners who don’t even own a car. The hassle of the London Underground is something many choose to avoid anyway, let alone with their pet.

Naturally, convenience translates into less stress for your clients. This can bring return clientele and more positive reviews if you make the overall experience that much easier!

The stress of being away from their pet for an extended period of time might hold some concerns, but they won’t have a thing to worry about if their furry pal is closer to home in your mobile grooming van!

This leads us to our next point. With all of the focus and attention on one pooch specifically, there is much less room for distractions than there would be in a standard grooming salon.

Because of the one-to-one nature of going to visit a client, the personalised attention will go unmatched. You’ll be able to pay more attention and give 110% to really ensure that you’re

MOBILE GROOMING
totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming 28
Something that is growing more and more within the industry is the fantastic ability to be able to groom on the go, so to speak. Mobile grooming is increasing in popularity worldwide, so let’s find out why…

providing your all for the client’s visit. This could also be a convenient way for more anxiety-filled pups (and people) to not have to be thrown into a social situation that they don’t want to be in. Dog groomers who are going mobile are able to collect the dogs with almost zero face-to-face interaction if that’s what the client wants.

So, with the focus solely being on one pooch alone, this ensures that the dog gets the attention they need. Grooming salons that host multiple pups can be great for the clients, however, there might be more wait times and pups might not get all of the attention they need with groomers being eager to get

to the next customer.

The fact that dogs might feel more comfortable alone and feel stressed when in a new environment with other dogs is also a key factor to take in.

As a groomer, in a mobile grooming environment you’ll get to do your best work so make the time count!

Now here’s something to consider… What if a client has an elderly dog? Elderly dogs require some extra care and love during the grooming process. However unique their needs, you, as a groomer, should be able to meet these requirements and give them exactly what they deserve. Don’t forget to ask your client for any specifics that you think you

should know prior to the appointment!

Our next key point is a huge one, flexibility!

As you’d expect, mobile grooming is hugely flexible! You can book appointments on your own schedule, no matter where you are or what your week looks like.

Use this to your advantage to get some extra appointments in the books at potentially unexpected times.

So, you might be thinking that you’re worried about your image of working out of a van. We’re here to say that there’s honestly nothing to worry about! Mobile groomers are notorious for being just as qualified as groomers who work out of a grooming salon.

Something else to make this a more desirable option for your clients is that it’s so much faster for them too. A mobile grooming salon showing up at their doorstep with everything they need sounds ideal. You can show up and get straight to work, lickety-split.

There doesn’t have to be any sitting around for the pet owner during the appointment, allowing them to go about any other errands or relaxation that they need. Another huge selling point, if you ask me!

In theory, dogs can be in and out of the service within just a couple of hours.

There’s no reason why you can’t be both a mobile groomer and a groomer who works within a salon, in fact, it couldn’t hurt to try both to see what’s

best for your business model specifically!

At the end of the day, clients will get extra comfort and flexibility with mobile grooming, and there is definitely a market for it so it only makes sense to seize it!

Providing a healthy environment for pets is the last essential to mention. You’re going to want to take just as good, if not better, care of your mobile space than you would a standard grooming salon. There is specialised equipment that helps to remove dirt and bacteria from surfaces, so be sure to do your research on pet-friendly products!

To wrap up, there are so many benefits to giving your clients a memorable mobile grooming service. If you want to supply your clients with a more personalised, less stressful and convenient experience then mobile grooming could be for you.

You can bank that return clientele won’t be an issue if you execute this perfectly.

We recommend speaking with some mobile pet groomers for more information on what sort of pricing you should be advertising, as well as promotion strategies and ways to stay up to date with all the latest grooming info.

We’ve spoken with many mobile groomers over the years and believe us when we say that they honestly love the way it has had an effect on their business. From building your clientele to loyalty among customers and providing a better service, mobile grooming could provide an utterly fantastic benefit to your dog grooming business.

Kojirō

We spoke with Nigel Waterworth of the infamous Kojiro brand to find out more about their wonderful range of Japanese-inspired scissors.

Kojirō was formed as a family business drawing in the experience, knowledge and skill of a family that had collectively over 100yrs experience in the grooming industry as pet groomers, award-winning competition grooming, grooming tutors and with a respected professional Sharpener and Scissor Smith.

This experience and knowledge of the industry led us to want to bring a difference to the UK scissor market, although there were the usual ‘big brands’, the majority of the market was swamped with affordable but relatively low-quality scissors. We wanted to develop a range of unique scissors that combined exceptional quality, durability and performance with affordability.

We knew they had to be manufactured using genuine Japanese steel, acknowledged Worldwide as the finest possible blade steel. We insisted on being able to certify the provenance of the steel as too often we saw scissors being sold as ‘Japanese steel’ when it

was obviously untrue. Every shipment of Kojirō scissors comes with a certificate of authenticity which even documents which batch number and furnace the Japanese steel originates from. Our new Empress range and all subsequent ranges will even be stamped with a unique number allowing us to trace every single scissor back to its origin.

This attention to detail is vitally important to us in order to guarantee the

quality and exclusivity of our scissors. We use a single highly experienced manufacturer, known as one of the finest quality manufacturers of beauty scissors in the World, to produce and hand finish our unique designs. We insist on using fine quality and even rare and exquisite steels such as VG-1 Gold in our scissors, this gives edge retention, corrosion resistance and lightweight making Kojirō scissors stand out as unique exclusive

They are manufactured by experienced craftsmen and women with an attention to detail and finish which is second to none. Kojirō scissors can always be immediately recognised for their super smooth action and beautiful finishes. Each scissor is finished by hand and incorporates techniques and technology not seen in grooming scissors previously.

Our popular Shogun and Imperial Shogun range uses a Teflon rideline pivot insert to further improve the smoothness of the action and reduce friction. Our new Empress range and all future styles in design and development incorporate two Teflon inserts ensuring a performance and precision unrivalled in the Industry. Our commitment to producing this affordable, yet exclusive quality is proven by the number of Top UK groomers who have already chosen and invested in a pair of Kojirō scissors.

Our scissors are designed uniquely based on what we believe can compliment your individual skills as a groomer. Then to provide you with performance, durability, comfort and reliability, not just how ‘pretty’ or ‘cheap’ we can produce them.

They are exclusive, individual, specialist scissors of the highest quality that you can be confident in investing in, owning and using for years to come. Usually, it takes at least a couple or more prototypes before we’re all happy with a particular design and we won’t put it into production until we all agree it’s the best we can achieve, so Yes, we are a little more expensive, but there are many reasons for this and we believe if you try

Kojirō’s you will appreciate exactly why.

We have recently introduced our ‘Keystone’ range, the Kojirō Seiko aimed at groomers on a tight budget and Student Groomers, even these ‘budget’ scissors have a quality and refinement usually only seen in mid and high-range scissors, our total commitment extends to every sector of the grooming industry whether beginners or Championship Class.

All our designs start with renowned Scissor Smith and Sharpener Nigel Waterworth, he works from a basic design style and adds or subtracts design elements based on his experience repairing and sharpening quality scissors, trying to eliminate design flaws and improving or specifying enhanced pivot mechanisms, blade geometry and utilising far better quality

Japanese steels than most other brands and manufacturers. Then it’s down to Georgia and Madison to test prototypes In a real-world environment where we look at comfort, reliability, scissor action and precision. Finally, we get to a design we’re all happy to put into production.

That’s why more and more Groomers everywhere are choosing Kojirō, it’s about skill, attention to detail, performance and a quality that compliments your talents.

Later this year we are expanding our range to include other unique grooming products that we believe can bring value, and quality and improve sustainability whilst lessening the environmental impact. The Kojirō brand will continue to grow as we expand with plans to distribute our unique, high-quality range into Europe and the US markets.

Pet Head Grooming Parlour

Hi readers, My name is Nancy Brown, and I am a fully qualified dog groomer at the world’s only Pet Head Grooming Parlour situated in the leafy Surrey countryside at Dr Roger Mugford’s Company of Animals Pet Centre in Chertsey. Dogs have always been an extremely important part of my life and I have been lucky enough to have grown up with many different breeds over the years.

The Pet Head Grooming Parlour is a brand new, purpose-built salon, fully equipped with leading-brand appliances. We only opened in May 2023 and within that short period of time, I have had many happy customers with wagging tails. I strive for the highest standard of work and treat each of them as if they were my own dog. It brings me joy when I fulfil my clients’ grooming requests and can bring their ideas to life all while ensuring their four-legged companion is looking their best.

Being the home of Pet Head shampoos, conditioners, sprays and paw butters comes with a lot of perks. Not only do I have full access to the range, but it also means that I get to see all the exciting new products before they hit the shelves. Clients get to choose which products they would like me to use on their dog and many of them make purchases to keep their dogs looking their best between visits to the parlour. It’s also really kind to my hands and smells delicious too!

The Pet Head grooming parlour is only one of a number of services offered at our site. We also have; dog training classes and pet behaviour consultations, as well as a hydro and physiotherapy centre. Many of our clients have cause to move between our experts so we really do offer 360o care for animal health,

hygiene, welfare and development.

In conjunction with other members of the Pet Centre team, we offer courses to teach owners and their dogs to become acclimatized to the sights and sounds of the grooming parlour so that they happily bounce through the door for their wash and brush up! We also accept dogs who already dislike being groomed/handled and can help them to overcome their fear.

Regular grooming for all dogs no matter what their coat type is an essential part of their care. Not only does it make them look good but it also gives me the opportunity to check for skin infections,

foreign bodies (i.e. fleas and ticks) cuts, matts, etc. I can also give advice to owners on the most suitable equipment to use on their dog’s coat when they’re grooming them at home, as different coat types have different requirements.

I see myself growing my happy and content client base that will furthermore promote our luxurious range of Pet Head products once everyone gets to see what a difference using the right product can make to their pets’ coats.

Water intoxication

Once again, we have the latest in canine health from the fantastic Rachel Bean. This month, we find out all about water intoxication from the professional herself.

It’s been a busy month for Team Bean, and we have been heading up and down the country teaching canine first aid. If I have seen you at one of my courses, thank you for coming along.

My trusty sidekick Chilli has been an absolute dream and the perfect travel buddy as we navigate up and down the country, and she also really helps get the message across at my hands-on demonstrations too.

Fox red Labrador Chilli is no stranger to appearing in public and has picked up plenty of celebrity friends on the way.

And as part of our most recent tour, it was lovely to stop off with our good friend Jodie Marsh, a consummate animal advocate who made us feel really welcome.

We have been friends with Jodie for many years, and it is amazing watching her animal advocacy and rescue work flourish.

Media personality and award-winning bodybuilder Jodie runs Fripps Farm Animal Sanctuary, which is a lifelong dream for her. We are proud to be associated with the project and her caring and nurturing nature shines through in the work that she does.

The sanctuary began in 2020 which was obviously a difficult time all around, but Jodie and her team have remained dedicated to their cause, and the sanctuary’s animals are happy, healthy and finally in their well-deserved safe space.

As I am writing this column I am getting ready to head to Scotland, where I am looking forward to teaching at a series of events. If you would like me to come to your place of work to teach a course please get in touch, Canine First Aid is so important!

So, here’s my tip for this month...

The weather is amazing at the moment, but there is a hidden hazard for your dog that all pet owners and pet professionals should know about.

RACHEL BEAN MONTHLY
totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming 44

Dogs who are fed a dry diet often like to drink plenty of water, but when the weather heats up too, there is a very real chance of water intoxication from taking in too many fluids.

The consequences of allowing your dog to take on too much water could be fatal, and it can take a large dog as little as eight hours to die if they are not treated.

Water intoxication is a very real threat, and it is vital that owners monitor how much water their dog is taking on during

hot weather.

Of course, it is important that your dog stays hydrated, but too much water can flood the dog’s intestinal tract and cause swelling of the animal’s liver and brain.

Water intoxication is commonly seen in dogs who love to play in water, and have lots of access to deeper water throughout the day which they will absorb and drink.

As well as causing serious harm to your dog’s vital organs, too much water can also completely flush out vital minerals

from their system, including sodium.

Signs of water intoxication to look out for include lethargy, a swollen stomach, nausea and vomiting.

If you suspect that a dog is suffering from water intoxication get them to a vet urgently as they will need emergency treatment. Water is vital for life, but it can also be a killer.

Feline first aid

None of us want to think about what would happen if a cat starts to experience medical distress while being groomed or in your care, but it is a good idea to be prepared in case this ever does happen. Would you know what to do if a cat started choking? Started showing signs of major distress? If they collapsed or became unconscious? It’s always better to be ready for anything like this just in case and hope nothing ever comes up. By iPET

The iPet Network do an inperson emergency first aid level 3 course that is OFQUAL regulated and veterinarian

Sophie Bell at Animal Love Pet First Aid does a selection of courses.

Here are five feline first-aid tips to give you some food for thought.

Check for danger

If you see a cat in distress, check the area before rushing in. Is there anything near

the cat that has triggered their health issue such as an electric cable they have bitten or a chemical that could be poisonous?

If you are out and about and see a cat hit by a car, before helping them is it safe to cross the road or are you putting yourself at risk as well? There is no point in running into a problem and getting yourself injured as well and not being able to help anyone. Take a moment to assess the situation first.

Don’t panic

Try to keep your calm in an emergency. Panicking will only make others around you panic as well. Cats in particular are able to sense our emotions.

Keeping panic at bay will help you also be more logical in dealing with any emergencies and be much more able to help the cat. If people around you are panicking a great way to help is to give them one simple task to help them focus. Ask them to find a towel, get a bowl of

water, clear the area of other people etc.

Check for a response and breathing

If the cat is conscious this is much easier. I don’t recommend shouting at the cat or shaking them at all.

Try moving a finger and seeing if their eyes track it, tap near them to see if they register the sound or movement and if not try tapping the back of your hand in a clapping motion that isn’t as loud as actually clapping your palms.

If the cat is unconscious and doesn’t react to these then check to see if they are breathing. I don’t recommend touching an apparently unconscious animal just in case they come to suddenly and lash out in confusion.

Hold a mobile phone or mirror in front of their mouth to see if you can see their breath steam it up. Watch their chest to see if it rises and falls.

If not and you know how to give chest compressions then move on to this whilst on the way to an emergency vet. If you know the recovery position and it is safe to do so, lie the cat on its left-hand side to do this giving you better access to the heart which is on the left.

Scan the cat’s head and body

Check the pupils and for any discharge from the nose, mouth or ears. Are there any bones visible or limbs in unusual positions? Can you see any obvious wounds without touching the cat?

There can be internal problems so it’s usually wise to avoid moving the cat more than necessary. If there has been physical trauma then always take for a vet check to see if there are any internal injuries.

If possible look at stemming any bleeding with pressure on the wound and try to gently wrap the cat to keep them warm. Losing bodily fluids and going into shock all cause a drop in temperature so do your best to help with this.

Get to the vet ASAP

It is always best to contact your local vet for a proper health check. There may be internal complications you are unaware of. Keep the details of the closest one to your salon in an easy-to-find place and include details of your nearest out-ofhours vets too.

Always check with clients before starting grooming if the cat has any known health conditions and is on any medication and keep this information updated. If the situation is serious then head straight to the vet and contact the client on the way to let them know what is going on

If you suspect poison (remember cats have different toxins than dogs) and have an idea of the cause, take a photo of the cause or take it with you in a bag. Anything that touches a cat’s paws or fur will be licked and groomed so take extra care with any products, cleaning supplies and plants in your salon.

I highly recommend doing a first aid course and topping up your knowledge every two years.
