Brittany Smith grew up in the inner city of Cleveland, attending Cleveland public schools such as the Cleveland School of the Arts and Glenville High School. Brittany developed a passion for helping others in the city at a young age and has spent most of her professional career doing so.

Brittany began her work directly in the Glenville community as early as high school where she worked at the Glenville recreation center after school. She then attended Kent State University and earned a Bachelor

of Arts degree in psychology with a minor in political science. Shortly after she graduated, she began work at the St. Martin De Porres Center located in Ward 9. There, she provided parenting education on development, nutrition, and other factors that contribute to the overall health of infants and toddlers.

ife is sometimes surprising, especially if you think you’re going in one direction and life throws you a curve ball. In the case of Marvin Lowe, it wasn’t a curve ball, it was his life’s purpose singing!

As a kid, Marvin sang around the house, but never when others were around. Several of his brothers and sisters sang in the church choir, one brother danced with the Philadelphia Ballet, played the piano, and sang with the Vienna Boys Choir. But no one knew that Marvin could sing.

One day, though, visiting his mother’s church where the choir was rehearsing “God Is,” he sat in the back of the sanctuary listening. Unconsciously, he began singing along, not realizing the choir could hear him. The choir director stopped everything and brought Marvin up to the front of the church. The upshot is that at the following Sunday services, Marvin sang the solo part of the song. That was the first time his church had ever heard him sing.

That didn’t change anything for Marvin, though. He followed his brothers and sisters around to the music groups they were involved with, but he kept quiet. Yet deep inside Marvin, music was making an impression he just didn’t know to what extent.

When he left home to attend Florida A&M University, Marvin’s intent was to become an architect. Arriving on campus for his freshman year, he just “happened” to walk into the music building. A student practicing in a rehearsal room asked Marvin if he was a music major. Marvin replied, “No, no. I’m an architecture student I’m on my way to that building now.”

But the student begged Marvin to help him with some music he had just composed. Marvin finally relented and sang the piece.

The student was shocked. “You’re not a music major?!” Despite that, the student invited Marvin to join the freshman talent show. And who won the competition? Marvin!

Along with the trophy Marvin received a full music scholarship. And that was the turning point for him. Singing became Marvin’s entire focus.

The next significant moment occurred when the university’s vice president sent Marvin to NYC to audition for Opera Ebony. They loved Marvin and introduced him to a company that was going to perform in Berlin. He was hired as a principal artist and that’s the way it’s been ever since.

Marvin, a bass-baritone, has toured the world performing in operas and theater productions, appeared at the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center, and has appeared on television and in film.

Marvin is currently appearing as Pastor Alltalk in an updated production of Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha, in Toronto, Canada. The original production was ahead of its time as it introduced a young Black woman as its protagonist who is eventually chosen to lead her community. Its themes are still pertinent today.

One of Marvin’s most important roles besides performing is directing productions of his multifaceted show A Soulful Music Celebration, a journey through the history of Black music in the US with its roots in Africa. The program “seeks to inspire contemporary listeners to use their own voices to create change and help unite all people in these trying times.”

Marvin has come full circle in his career from learning about himself, about his tremendous gift, and the world of music and the many productions he’s been a part of. Now he’s able to share through his artistry and the artistry of his fellow per-

While Americans debate over red and blue politics, if gay people should have any rights, and why migrant workers don’t deserve citizenship, the world is reshaping its relationship with the US dollar. Once considered the world’s currency, the dollar is under attack and if we don’t pay attention, Americans could be in for a rude awakening.

The dollar has been the world’s primary reserve currency for

over sixty years. Under the Bretton Woods system, the dollar was pegged to gold and most other currencies were pegged to the dollar. As a result of this arrangement, dollars were used as the main intervention currency and, hence, reserve currency.

The Bretton Woods Agreement and system created a collective international currency exchange setup that lasted from the mid-1940s to the early 1970s. The Federal Reserve Bank states that the countries involved in the formation of the agreement “saw the opportunity for a new international sys-

tem after World War II that would draw on the lessons of the previous gold standards and the experience of the Great Depression and provide for postwar reconstruction.”

After President Richard Nixon ended the agreement in 1971, crude oil became the dominant means by which the dollar was based globally, e.g., countries importing oil pay for it in greenbacks. Similarly, those that export the commodity receive payment in USD.

America no longer leads as it used to. In fact, some countries recently put out warnings to their citizens that traveling to the US is dangerous and advised against it. Rampant crime is just one of the areas where America struggles as a country.

The US government doesn’t formally track how many Americans leave the country, but the most recent estimate puts the figure at nearly nine million. This figure represents a doubling of the 1999 figure, placed at 4.1 million. California, Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, and New York were at the top of the list of states people are leaving.

Education, cost of living, and quality of life are starting to become a factor in whether people choose to come here to live. Conversely, Americans are leaving by the thousands and not coming back.

There are now a record number of American expats becoming temporary residents in Mexico as of 2022. According to an analysis from Bloomberg, there was an 85 percent increase between 2019 and 2022 in the number of Americans becoming temporary residents in Mexico.

THE CHANGING AMERICA

The fabric of America is changing, and no one seems to be taking notice. Everywhere you look, law and order are quickly disappearing. Here are some examples where unlawful activity has been normalized:

• Mobile scams – The fact that people get 5 to 7 scam calls a day. It has become a part of life if you own a cell phone.

• Mass shootings – There have been over 300 mass shootings in 2023 (Mass shooting definition: when 4 or more people die in one occurrence).

• Retail theft – Watching thieves steal

from retail stores has become great people-watching instead of a lawless act. There are actual policies prohibiting employees from stopping crimes.

• Home Invasions – No amount of money or gated communities can protect people from home invasions. People are getting robbed at an unprecedented level.

• Left-hand lane drivers – This petty driving abuse is so bad that it has raised the potential for accidents and exacerbated road rage, which can lead to deadly altercations.

If Americans can come together to boycott a beer, then we can come together and demand that America return to some level of law and order. America is under attack from foreign and domestic problems. If the citizens of the country do not

Today, we stand in remembrance of the 102nd anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre, a dark chapter in American history that unfolded in the Greenwood District, also known as Black Wall Street. The events of May 31 to June 1, 1921, remind us of the resilience of the Black community and the importance of striving for justice and equality.

Ron Busby, Sr., President & CEO of U.S. Black Chambers, Inc. (USBC), expressed his sentiments on this solemn occasion, saying, "The Tulsa Race Massacre serves as a painful

arlier this year, I was honored to receive the Joseph R. Biden Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award. And on top of that amazing honor, the committee asked me to speak to celebrate all the honorees. Here are a few points I shared in my speech that I believe can be a blessing to you as well! There will be times in life when things might look dim, but you must make a point to stay positive by filling yourself with inspirational and motivational information. It will keep you uplifted so you are able

to move forward to experience all the amazing things that are possible for your life.

When I was at one of the lowest points in my business, an older gentlemen took the time to share some words of hope and possibility with me. He encouraged me to stay positive and have faith. He helped me to believe that my best was yet to come. And he was right. I truly believe that his words that day changed the trajectory of my future and helped me to think better so I could do better and create a better future!

PPeople are quickly learning that the one thing they can count on since the pandemic is that nothing is the same and nothing is safe. Gone is the expectation that life is predictable. The college degree, salary, home, food, and life we all could count on are over.

When gas prices increased, there was a realization that Americans might be able to deal with this one thing. Then housing and rents increased. Then the price of food went up. Now people must deal with the threat that the job they spent $70K getting might be gone due to Artificial Intelligence (AI).

At first, it was considered acceptable. The auto attendant, self-checkout, the ATM machine, and EZ Pass for the turnpike. It seemed harmless because it made life easier maybe even better in some ways. But today, AI is starting to disrupt lives and careers.

The recent launch of ChatGPT has literally changed the game for anyone who holds a position that interacts with

anything digital. ChatGPT is a sibling model to InstructGPT, which is trained to follow instructions in a prompt and provide a detailed response. ChatGPT can compose essays, describe art in detail, create AI art prompts, have philosophical conversations, and even do coding.

AI has the potential to bring about numerous positive changes in society, including enhanced productivity, improved healthcare, and increased access to education. AIpowered technologies can also help solve complex problems and make our daily lives easier and more convenient.

AI already provides a range of benefits, including increased efficiency, reduced costs, improved accuracy, enhanced decision-making, and new opportunities for innovation and job creation. People have already seen this across many enterprise verticals.

Since the introduction of AI, there have been several instances where people cannot tell the difference between what is fake and what is real. Music, art, photos, movies, and video have all been impacted by the use of AI.

For the working class, AI is starting to take away everyday jobs. Waiters in restaurants, forklift drivers, meal delivery, and a host of other positions are being eliminated due to AI. The question remains, is your job safe from the advancement of technology?

What used to be convenient has now turned into a possible threat to millions of people who thought their degree made them safe, their knowledge of their job protected them, and their length of employment made them comfortable. Now music producers, marketing professionals, and content creators must deal with the reality that a computer can create the same result, using less effort, and almost no money, all with no need for a break.

It used to be the call centers in India were the problem, and it still is. Now it’s technology that’s the threat the same technology everyone has come to enjoy and even depend on.

In a recent study, people showed the most support for a 75% human to 25% AI decision-making collaboration or a 50%-50% split. People still prefer to talk to people. When using AI to navigate a phone conversation, people still expect and need to speak with other humans to get their point across.

Now that artificial intelligence is here, many people wonder what

will happen if it’s used for evil. There are a myriad of risks having to do with AI that people deal with in their lives today. Not every AI risk is as big and worrisome as killer robots or a sentient AI. Some of the biggest risks today include things like consumer privacy, biased programming, danger to humans, and unclear legal regulation.

ChatGPT is an incredible invention. It can be used in all sorts of applications, including bad ones. Recently there was a song created using ChatGPT using the likeness of Drake that went viral online.

“Heart on My Sleeve,” the song created by TikTok user Ghostwriter97, combining the AI-generated voices of Drake and the Weeknd, managed to go viral, accumulating millions of plays across Spotify, TikTok, and YouTube before being taken down; the song wasn’t a joke, and its success shone a spotlight on the blurry legal issues that arise when something fake creates revenue and the original artist doesn’t benefit from it.

Despite the originality of the artwork, the US Copyright Office has taken the position that AI-generated images themselves are not entitled to copyright protection, as they are not the product of human authorship and therefore do not meet the definition of original. The same goes for music created using AI.

That goes for an AI art piece. It can’t be protected either by typical copyrighting standard practices. One AI art generator, Deep AI, states on its Terms of Service page that all content created using its AI tools is free of copyright, including for all legal uses, such as personal and commercial gain. This blurry line will only create more questions as the use of AI expands into all areas of marketing, content creation, and publication.

Currently, AI-generated images are free for commercial use. AI art does not have automatic copyright protection, and ownership cannot be claimed.

Physical exercise has proven to be one of the most effective ways to decrease the risk of disease and health problems. Working out could be the difference between life and death.

Most everybody knows that sitting at a desk for a day’s work is not suitable for our health, or whether at home or after commuting to work. However, most people need to learn just how much exercise is required to counteract the adverse effects of sitting at a desk all day to avoid the pitfalls of a sedentary lifestyle while doing what they need to do to earn a living.

Studies have linked the extent of the adverse effects of too much sitting to even more severe consequences than weight gain and poor posture.

One meta-analysis study included nearly 45,000 participants over 4.5–14 years and found a link between sitting more than

10.5 hours per day and a high mortality risk, especially in those with deficient levels of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity. So, for those who sit most of the day and are not currently getting active, this call to action has been shown to lower the risk of premature death.

How much exercise is needed to effectively lower the mortality risk of sitting all day at a desk? Previous research has estimated that up to 70 minutes of exercise per day is required to lower health risks related to spending an extended time sitting. However, a recent study suggests that 30–40 minutes daily should get the job done.

In active individuals doing about 30–40 minutes of moderateto-vigorous-intensity physical activity, the association between high sedentary time, which is considered over 10.5 hours per day of sitting, and risk of death is not significantly different from those with low amounts of sedentary time, which is considered under 8.5 hours per day of sitting (Ekelund et al, 2020).

In other words, some reasonably intensive activities such as a brisk walk, riding a bike, or working in a garden can effectively lower the life-threatening risks of sitting too much to a level of risk equal to a person who spends very little time sitting. This link is backed by data measured from a study that included thousands of people.

Meta-analyses like this study often amass information from multiple studies with diverse participant populations and conditions. This study is uniquely reliable because it depended on relatively objective data from wearable activity monitors, so researchers could use technology instead of the participants’ self-reporting.

It’s imperative to know and share this information now more than ever because many people have increased their time sitting since 2020. Also, work-from-home and remote jobs are more prevalent than ever, and it looks like that will remain the same for a while.

It’s important to not have an all-or-nothing mindset when it comes to achieving the recommended exercise to counteract sitting. Any moderate-to-vigorous intense physical activity is excellent and protects overall health and reduces health risks. Additionally, the burden of carving out a 30–40 minute block for physical activity daily is unnecessary.

Evidence suggests that any amount of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity, when accrued, can be beneficial so that several methods can be utilized to achieve the goal amount of exercise. For those who can periodically take a short break, incorporating a quick burst of activity can add up and lower health risks associated with sitting.

It’s important to start small with the time spent and activities that are already part of a typical workday. Here are some options:

Taking the stairs instead of an elevator can add strength to the hips and one’s physical core when done consistently over time. Set a goal to take at least three flights of stairs when entering and exiting a work and home building. The time spent stepping up and down stairs adds to the total physical activity spent during the day, decreasing the time needed to complete a 30–40 minute exercise period by the end of the

workday.

Parking further away from entrance doors and carrying a bag in one hand instead of using shoulder straps, while mimicking Superman’s posture by lifting the chin and chest, pulling the shoulder blades tightly together, and tightening the abdominal muscles.

This functional walking exercise can be done carrying any object that can be safely held and walked with while holding it in one hand and switching the bag to the other hand halfway to one’s destination. Doing this exercise over time can strengthen and tone one’s core and arm muscles and count toward the moderate -to-vigorous physical activity needed to counteract hours of sitting.

The good news for some people is that the amount of exercise required to lower health risks is significantly less, depending on how much someone spends sitting. The Ekelund study found that just two hours less of sitting is the difference between needing to do 11 minutes as opposed to 30–40 minutes of exercise. For those participants in the study who sat 8.5 hours or less, as little as 11 minutes of exercise was required to reduce the risk of death.

The Ekelund study did not account for how much time people spent standing throughout the day since activity monitors cannot tell if someone is sitting or standing. Currently, researchers need to clarify whether standing counteracts the health risks of sitting. Nevertheless, additional research can inform the World Health Organization and other public health authorities as they develop future recommendations for physical activity and sedentary time.

As more studies examine the question of “How much physical activity is needed to lower health risks related to sitting for long periods each day?” more specific information needs to be assessed that could provide general recommendations by age group and other factors. It’s been proven, however, that movement mitigates the health issues related to too much sitting, and now, with clear guidelines on exactly how much, the target of increased health and wellbeing is more visible and attainable. ●

LIFE BLACK DADS MATTER

Actor and comedian Kevin Hart said, “As a Black father, my priority is to be there for my kids, to show them love, and make sure they know that I’m always in their corner. Black dads are strong, caring, and important in their children’s lives.”

It has become a common stereotype that Black dads are not involved in their children’s lives, but research shows that isn’t true. The myth that Black dads are not involved stems from the statistic, that 70 percent of Black babies are born to unwed partners. Despite a large percentage of Black babies being born to fathers who aren’t married to their child’s mothers, the number of active non-residential Black dads are often not accounted for as active providers.

According to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 67 percent of African American fathers who don’t live with their children report having frequent contact with them. This demonstrates a significant level of involvement and a commitment to maintaining a strong relationship with their children despite living apart.

Furthermore, the National Center for Health Statistics reported that among non-residential fathers, African American dads are more likely than fathers from other racial and ethnic backgrounds to participate in activities with their children, such as playing sports, attending events, and helping with homework.

These data points emphasize that even when residing in different households, non-residential African American fathers make an effort to maintain an active and supportive presence in their children’s lives. Their involvement helps strengthen the parentchild bond and contributes to the overall well-being of their children. It is essential to recognize and appreciate the dedication of non-residential Black fathers, as they play a significant role in

their children’s lives despite the challenges of not living together.

When Black fathers choose to be involved in the lives of their children, their positive involvement increases the mental health of the children as they transition into adulthood. High levels of paternal involvement have been linked to children demonstrating greater levels of self-control, self-esteem, and social maturity. Younger children who frequently engage with their fathers have fewer temper tantrums, aggression, overactivity, and non-compliance issues.

Black Dads’ Value in School Performance

Black dads have a significant impact on their children’s academic success. They actively encourage their kids to excel in school and they provide assistance with their kids’ homework. Research published in the Journal of Negro Education reveals that when Black fathers are actively involved in their children’s education, their academic performance improves significantly. These children attain good grades, exhibit regular school attendance, and have higher graduation rates.

By emphasizing the importance of education, Black dads instill a strong belief in their children’s abilities and provide unwavering support throughout their academic journey.

The study goes on to highlight that Black dads go beyond helping with homework. They engage in conversations about educational goals, discuss future aspirations, and foster a positive attitude towards learning. By actively participating in their children’s academic lives, Black dads not only enhance their children’s academic achievements but also instill a lifelong love for learning. Their involvement serves as a powerful motivator, reinforcing the importance of education, as well as empowering their children to reach their full potential academi-

Black Dads Take Care of Their Families

Black dads are committed to providing for their families and ensuring that their kids have everything they need. Despite negative stereotypes, many Black dads are responsible and dedicated to taking care of their loved ones. According to the Center for Urban Families, numerous Black fathers are the primary earners in their households, working hard to provide their families with a good life and a sense of security.

Award-winning actor Denzel Washington has spoken out about the importance of recognizing the positive impact of Black fathers. He emphasized that Black fathers are not only providers but also protectors who inspire their families to achieve greatness. By breaking down stereotypes and acknowledging the vital role of Black dads, we can help promote a positive image of Black fatherhood and highlight their valuable contributions to society as a whole.

The Value of Early Involvement

A 2009 study by Shannon, Cabrera, TamisLeMonda, and Lamb observed five-year longitudinal patterns and found that fathers who participated in supporting their babies’ mothers during prenatal doctor visits were the most likely to be involved within a five-year period after the child was born. The study further found that the riskiest time for fathers to dissolve their involvement was at the time of childbirth. These findings are consistent with other studies that show a direct correlation between the father’s involvement levels prior to birth and beyond the first five years of life.

The second most predicted time that fathers stop participating in the lives of their children was be-

tween 60-65 months or prior to the start of kindergarten. Other studies validated these results by proving that fathers who form early attachments with their children are more likely to be involved later into the child’s life. The fathers that establish their involvement during the earlier stages are also more likely to remain involved in the case of divorce.

The chances for continued involvement increase the older the child is when the parents separate or dissolve their marriage, further illustrating the value of early father-child attachment. Research also supports that when fathers develop earlier relationships with their children, they have a better chance of moving away and then returning sometime later to repair the relationship with their child. This is in comparison to fathers

who don’t develop an early relationship and seek to reenter into the child’s life.

Later Involvement

In 2007, researchers Hawkins, Amato, and King concluded that nonresidential fathers are less likely to be involved with their adolescent children if they hadn’t established relationships at an earlier stage. The same group of researchers also concluded that there is no significant evidence proving that nonresidential father’s involvement adds any benefit when the father attempts to reappear later in the child’s life.

However, this study supports prior research indicating that it’s important for non-residential fathers to establish and maintain strong involvement in the lives of their children during their earlier stages of life primarily because by the time a child has reached adolescence, they are more likely to shut their uninvolved father out of their lives equating to little benefit or added value.

Impact on Emotional and Social Well-being

Researchers McLanahan, Tach, and Schneider in 2013 reviewed 47 articles around father involvement and found that the most prevalent theme was associated with the negative effects father absenteeism has on stunting children’s emotional and social growth. Research depicts fathers as having a vital role within the family unit and proves that in their absence, several negative side effects become present that directly im-

pact the well-being of their offspring. These negative effects weigh even heavier on children who experience the loss of paternal involvement during their earlier childhood years leading into adolescence.

Younger children have been found to have greater social and emotional challenges when they experience lower levels of father involvement earlier in life. This is in comparison to children who lose the involvement of their fathers later in life. However, the group that is most negatively impacted by the loss of father involvement are young males.

Involvement Impact on Sons

Studies show that young boys are at a far greater risk for bearing the negative effects brought on by uninvolved dads. Emotional challenges are found more in young males and continue into adolescence, which is a vital time when youth begin questioning their participation in risky behaviors such as drug use and sexual activity.

Researchers Carlson and Magnuson in 2011 also support the research around fathers’ impact on their sons. Their study shows that fathers have a stronger influence on their sons compared to their daughters because of gender identification. Gender identification is based on the premise that young males seek their fathers’ approval and desire to please them.

When involved fathers are willing to fully participate in their children’s lives, their influence directly and positively impacts the well-being of their kids. That’s why there is a strong need to seek ways to reduce the barriers between men being involved with their children. ●

BLACKS AND JUNETEENTH DAY

The celebration of Blacks’ emancipation has become known as Juneteenth Day. Understanding the importance of the holiday means knowing your history.

n June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger proclaimed freedom for slaves across Texas. He and his army marched to Galveston, Texas to let the 250,000 remaining slaves know that they were free.

This proclamation began the next chapter in Black people’s lives as they were finally able to move without punishment, pursue freedom without fear, and begin to rebuild their families without fear of being torn apart.

Prior to June 19, 1865, for 300 years Blacks were ripped from their motherland, kidnapped, and shipped across the sea to work until death. They were not allowed to learn to read or write, marry, or have families of their own. If they were brought together, they were split up, sold to different plantations, and lived in horrible conditions until they died from being overworked.

This brutal way of life went on for hundreds of years without pause. It only began to get better as the Northern states started suffering financially from all the free labor that the South benefited from while using slaves to work their farms.

The United States Civil War was really a battle over free labor. America wanted to grow west, but there was discussion as to how the country would do that. They could either grow west as a slave country, using free labor to do it, or they could grow west and eliminate slavery altogether.

The South wanted to keep their slaves and the North wanted to maintain that slavery wasn’t needed. Hence the beginning of the Civil War. The conflict was between the Democrats, who wanted to keep slavery, and the Republicans, who wanted to eliminate slavery.

Blacks overwhelmingly voted Republican at the time because it meant a life without government interference. The Republican platform allowed free will, free movement around the country, and limited involvement from the government to do so.

As the Civil War progressed, Black men by the thousands joined in the fight to end slavery. Then, on June 19, 1865 (originally Jubilee Day, now Juneteenth), federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were set free.

LIFE AFTER THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION

After it became law that Blacks were free, white southerners need-

ed a new way to strike fear into people. The birth of the Klu Klux Klan happened on December 24th, 1865. Six Confederate veterans, meeting in Pulaski, Tennessee, formed a secret society that they called the Ku Klux Klan. The name combines the Greek word for circle (kyklos) with the Gaelic word clan.

In the aftermath of the Civil War, the KKK quickly morphed from a social fraternity to a violent group that sought to push back against key reconstruction policies championed by radical Republicans in Congress policies that for the first time enfranchised former enslaved African Americans.

BLACKS SWITCH PARTIES

The election of Roosevelt in 1932 marked the beginning of a change. According to historical statistics kept by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, Roosevelt received 71 percent of the Black vote for president in 1936 and did nearly that well in the next two elections. But even then, the number of Blacks identifying as Republicans was about the same as the number who identified as Democrats. Blacks mostly voted Republican after the Civil War and through the early part of the 20th century.

That’s not surprising when one considers that Abraham

LIVING IN THE

Lincoln was the first Republican president, and the white, segregationist politicians who governed Southern states in those days were Democrats. The Democratic Party didn’t welcome Blacks then, and it wasn’t until 1924 that Blacks were even permitted to attend Democratic conventions in any official capacity. Most Blacks lived in the South, where they were mostly prevented from voting at all.

Blacks began to vote Democratic as they joined labor unions. With advancements in manufacturing, people attained goodpaying jobs in factories. Those factories created unions. Organizations like the AFL-CIO began to structure and unionize but required that anyone who took a job must vote along union lines. The democratic platform favored unions, so any Black person that worked in a factory voted Democratic like the union told them to out of fear of losing their jobs.

THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT

The civil rights movement was a struggle for social justice that took place mainly during the 1950s and 1960s for Black Americans to gain equal rights under the law in the US. The Civil War officially abolished slavery, but it didn’t end discrimination against Black people they continued to endure the devastating effects of racism, especially in the South. By the mid-20th century, Black Americans, along with many other Americans, mobilized and began an unprecedented fight for equality that spanned two decades.

President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legislation initiated by President John F. Kennedy before his assassination into law on July 2 of that year. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other civil rights activists witnessed the signing. The law guaranteed equal employment for all, limited the use of voter literacy tests, and allowed federal authorities to ensure public facilities were integrated.

Some of the largest job gains among Black people during the decade occurred in clerical occupations such as bank tellers, bookkeepers, estimators and investigators, office machine operators, statistical clerks, and secretaries jobs that showed substantial growth during the 1970s.

Since then, Black culture began to domi-

nate and Black music took over. Black athletes now led the world in sports and Blacks were incarcerated more than any other race in America. Barak Obama became the first elected African American President.

During the national reckoning sparked by George Floyd’s murder in 2020, a significant share of Black Americans expected the increased focus on issues of racial inequality to lead to changes that would improve the lives of Black people. Roughly a year and a half later, nearly two-thirds (64%) of all Black adults, including those who are multiracial or Hispanic, say the increased attention did not lead to such changes, and few (13%) expect Black people will achieve equality in the US, according to an October 2021 survey.

The majority of Black adults across a variety of demographic subgroups say the nation’s racial reckoning has not improved the lives of Black people; overall, a smaller share of US adults (57%) say the same. Instead, Black adults in the US are less likely than other adults to say that the increased focus on race and racial issues has led to changes that are improving the lives of Black citizens (31% vs. 40%).

If we are to learn anything from Juneteenth (Juneteenth National Independence Day), it’s that the hard work of becoming truly free is not over. Blacks will be free when the Black family is back together, when the Black community is robust and thriving, and when the Black agenda of equality and selfpreservation is accepted as a positive by all of American society. ●
