Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Printed in Canada

Welcome to the July 2021 Recreation & Culture Guide

A Message from Mayor Chris Spearman

After a year of unusual circumstances, we’re all looking forward to getting back to our favourite activities. If you’re curious about what is open out there, you’re in the right place. The Recreation and Culture Guide is your guide to what’s available as more of our facilities move towards reopening. The Guide will help you keep in touch with clubs, leagues, teams, events and classes so you can return to learning and exploring as soon as is reasonably possible. Canada Day is your day to celebrate our amazing country. Unfortunately, there will be no fireworks or public events provided by the City of Lethbridge at Henderson Park or Galt Gardens again this year. Events of this magnitude take months of preparation so given the pandemic, we encourage people to celebrate in their own way and try something new! The City's Canada Day Committee has organized a range of COVID safe events for people to enjoy in their own backyards or at outdoor venues around the City. Starting June 22, you can pick up a free Canada Day Activity Bag for your family at City Hall, Galt Museum, Lethbridge Public Library or Helen Schuler Nature Centre. Also, a free Canada Day Activity Booklet will appear in the Lethbridge Herald on Wednesday, June 30th. More information can be found online at www.lethbridge.ca/CanadaDay. Have you heard the news that New West Theatre has lined up some live, outdoor performances in some of our larger parks this summer? I just can’t wait! See the schedule on their website! www.newwesttheatre.com Summer is a great time to enjoy shopping downtown, and supporting our local businesses all over the city while following the COVID-19 guidelines will help them to recover. I know they look forward to seeing you and will appreciate your support. We’ll have to wait and see which of our summer festivals and events will be able to be added to the calendar. Wherever you go, please remember to keep each other safe by keeping those masks on in all indoor spaces, keeping a good distance apart and wash and sanitize your hands frequently. Equally important, if you haven’t already don’t so, please roll up your sleeve and get your vaccination. Be active and be safe Lethbridge! Mayor Chris Spearman

Lethbridge’s 1946 Victory Rally and Rodeo For southern Alberta and Canada, the Second World War dominated the years between 1939 and 1945. Finally, in 1946, after six years of war, Lethbridge and area were ready to celebrate and participate in post-war activities. The Victory Rally and Rodeo was a celebration for returning service personnel coming home from the War, as well as an opportunity for everyone to celebrate peace and the return of normalcy

The Parade Marshall was Gene Autry, the Singing Cowboy, known for being a movie and TV star as well as a guitarist and singer. Autry also performed at the exhibition. Also present at the event was Patsy Rodgers, the first Calgary Stampede Rodeo Queen.

Herman Linder outlined the early plans for the Victory Rally in a presentation before City Council. Scheduled were a parade, rodeo, dancing, midway shows and rides and performances by the Hell Drivers.

arts in lethbridge arts feature South Country Fair In 1987, three Southern Alberta non-profit, folk music presenters (Lethbridge Folk Club, Livingstone Range Folk Club in Lundbreck and Willow Creek Folk Club in Fort Macleod) decided upon a camping weekend. The groups had been mutually supporting each others concerts and desired to expand the commaderie between groups. It was highly likely that some music was going to break out over the weekend together and that others would like to tag along. So someone found a trailer for a stage. Alex Pavlenko was asked to print some posters. Crafters and local musicians were called and the fledgling South Country Fair was presented to the World (named for and inspired by our big sister North Country Fair) on a Saturday in late July, noon to midnight! Tickets were a flat $10. Three decades and counting since those halcyon, formative days, South Country Fair has grown to three days and presented hundreds of artists from all over Canada, North America and the world. SCF loves what they do, including switching people on to the music that you can’t hear on the local stations because it

doesn’t fit the commercial format. It was an uphill battle, but SCF volunteers were on their home turf and doggedly determined. The challenge of the last year and a half just provided the group with one more flag they needed to take. With no touring anywhere in the world, SCF shifted gears with the intention of maintaining the connections forged over decades. They learned to use recording and internet streaming technology to reach the community via the living rooms of artists as far away as New York, Denmark and Spain, not to mention East Vancouver, Peterborough, Calgary and of course Lethbridge. With a return to some semblance of what the world looked like pre-pandemic, SCF is currently in the early stages of laying out a strategy to mount a full-on festival again in 2022. In the meantime, they will be presenting some smaller shows and streaming recorded videos of local musical heroes throughout the fall. Connect with South Country Fair at southcountryfair.com and on Facebook. To quote Tom King’s character Jasper, “Stay strong. Be brave. Watch for the signs!”

Small and Fast: The Swift Fox Did You Know?

As the name suggests, the swift fox (Vulpes velox) is a speedy little fox species once found in the prairies and, foothills of the southern Alberta rockies.

The swift fox is the smallest wild dog in North America and among the smallest in the world — at two to three kilograms, it’s about as heavy as an adult Chihuahua, which allows it to reach top speeds of up to 60 km/hr. Other defining traits include vertical cat-like eyes, black facial spots on the sides of their muzzles, and long, black-tipped bushy tails. Birds of Prey Centre

Photo: natureconservancy.ca

The swift fox was distributed in large populations across the Canadian Prairies, but declined due to trapping and predator control programs and an increase in agrarian development in the late 1800s. This species was classified in Canada as extirpated (locally extinct) in 1978. (ASFPR 2006-2011; COSEWIC) and got reintroduced between 1983 and 1997. Swift foxes are a unique part of the prairie ecosystem, as they are omnivorous and will feed on almost anything, including pest species such as mice or insects.
