SIXTH FORM NEWS

On Monday, the Year 13 Fine Art, Textiles and Photography students began their three-day Art exams. The girls created a range of dresses, waistcoats, sculptures and more! The work will go towards their end A Level result and so a huge well done to them all for working so hard this week.

During Year 12 Careers lesson on Tuesday, the girls did an in-tray exercise in preparation for job application and interview practice for the future.

The first of the St Teresa's Explore Lectures was about undertaking an ultramarathon. It took place on Tuesday evening, in the Sixth Form Lecture Theatre, where Doug Clark talked about his amazing accomplishments, and other achievements such as completing many races including the Ultra-Marathon du Mont Blanc which had 10,000M elevation gain. On top of this, the race was just over 100 miles and took him 29 hours to complete. He also told his story of how he got into running, starting in Year Five at a cross country event and how he progressively improved to the runner he is today through hard work and commitment.

On Wednesday night, Georgina, Lucy and I took part in the Senior Rotary Debating competition, held at St John's School in Leatherhead. There were teams there from different schools such as Manor House and St John’s. Our proposed topic was 'Peaceful Protests Are the Most Effective Way to Bring About a Change.' Although we did not win, it was a great learning experience for us all and we are looking forward to continuing with our Public Speaking.

Sophie R (Year 12)

During Thursday Morning’s Sixth Form Assembly, Julia T and Alisha A in Year 12 presented the assembly about the importance of sleep. We found out some really interesting facts about sleeping and the meaning of our dreams.

The Year 12s are currently applying for various Student Leadership roles within the school and so they have the opportunity to present an assembly to the Sixth Form as preparation. Well done to the girls who presented the assembly this week!

On Friday during Period 5, the Sixth Form had their second Enrichment Session of this term, where the Years 12 and 13 students split into integrated groups to do different activities. These included yoga, volunteering, wellbeing, current affairs and learning a new skill. It was great for both years to get together and enjoy their enrichment session before the weekend!

BOARDING NEWS

Last weekend, the girls went out on a shopping trip to Guildford which is one of their favourite weekend activities. We also celebrated Chinese New Year. The Year 10 girls made some delicious egg tomato and rice, we handed out red envelopes with edible paper money and hung-up decorations throughout the corridors. Some of the girls even had fun handmaking their own decorations. Next weekend's trip is outdoor laser tag finished off with some pizza for lunch, and then some activities at home such as scrapbooking.

EXPLORE LECTURE

On Tuesday we welcomed Doug Clark to give a lecture on his experience running an “Ultra Marathon” as part of our Explore Lecture series.

He talked about his journey running for 29 hours straight from Chamonix to St Joveah and all the training and preparation that came before this incredible feat. He talked passionately about how important it is to have a long-term goal to help motivate you, and how learning from your mistakes can help teach you valuable skills. He was also very adamant on the impact of hard work and how it can pay off! We want to extend our thanks to Doug Clark for such a fascinating lecture.

CCF STEM CHALLENGE

The CCF resplendent in their new camouflage kit, undertook a STEM challenge aimed at developing their problem solving and team working skills. The challenge was to construct a wheelbarrow to transfer as much water as possible over a distance of three metres within an allotted time. The teams successfully completed the task with a range of creative solutions.

YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY TRIP

The Geography Department has organised a compulsory residential trip to Dorset for Year 10. We will depart from St Teresa’s at 08:45 on Wednesday 26th April 2023 and will return by 3:45pm on Friday 28th April 2023. We will travel down to Dorset with Harding’s Coaches, and will stay full board for two nights at the PGL Centre at Osmington Bay, Dorset. A consent form has been sent out to give permission for your daughter to participate.

YEAR 8 CSI FORENSIC EVENING

You and your daughter(s) are invited to attend a Family Learning Event in the Science Department at St Teresa’s on Monday 13th March or Tuesday 14th March 2023 from 17:30- 19:00, as part of National Science Week. You will have the opportunity to investigate a ‘murder’ that has taken place at school: can you identify the culprit? The evening will comprise various forensic testing, including chromatography, blood testing and fingerprint analysis. If you would like to attend this event, please reply by email to t.pearson@st-teresas.com stating which day you would prefer and how many places you would like, by Monday 6th March. Please note that places are limited and will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

ECO REQUEST

The green fingered students have started introducing indoor plants into the Form Rooms across the school in an Eco boosting initiative. In the spirit of the Eco Club the plants have either been re-homed or have been propagated, but we are still a few short so if you happen to have any that you would like to donate we would appreciate it.

In the same spirit of re-using we are also looking for any saucers or medium sized plant pots.

YEAR 8 TRIP TO THE GLOBE THEATRE

We have organised a joint Drama and English trip this term to see a performance of The Tempest at the Globe Theatre. Pupils will be watching the evening performance on Tuesday 7th March starting at 7:00pm, meaning there will be a normal day of school on the Tuesday. Pupils will be provided with a packed dinner and will be back for collection from St Teresa’s no later than 11:00pm. The total cost will be no more than £35 and will be added onto the end of term bill. If you would like your daughter to participate in this event, please click and complete the Google form, that was sent out to you previously, by 9am on Friday 10th February.

YEAR 7 RESIDENTIAL

We are delighted to confirm that there will be a residential trip for Year 7 from Thursday 18th May to Friday 19th May at 4th Dimension Outdoor Activities Centre, East Grinstead. The trip will provide pupils with the opportunity to explore exciting new experiences, learn new skills and discover more about themselves and those around them.

The trip will depart on Thursday 18th May. Pupils will travel by coach and arrive at 4th Dimension by 08:00. The site covers 125 acres of field and woodland on the edge of the Ashdown Forest. In the Spring, the woods are blanketed in bluebells. The company has been running residential adventure courses throughout the UK and abroad since 1976, and courses in East Grinstead since 1980. They have an unrivalled knowledge of the location. Pupils will be staying at 4th Dimension overnight before returning to school by 16:15 on Friday 19th May. Exact times are to be confirmed.

If you would like to reserve a provisional place on the trip then please return the permission slip included in the email sent out earlier this week and make a non-refundable deposit payment of £11 to the school to enable us to secure the trip.

YEAR 7 BATTLE OF HASTINGS TALK

We have representatives from Windsor Castle coming in to deliver a talk to Year 7 on the aftermath of the Battle of Hastings.

It’s happening on the 8th February during Periods 5 and 6.

PARENT WORKSHOP ON MENTAL HEALTH

6th – 10th February is Youth Mental Health Awareness Week, a national annual event which gives an opportunity for the whole of the UK to focus on the importance of children and young people’s mental health. We are organising many activities throughout the week .

We have also arranged for Mr David Leech, an expert in mental health and wellbeing, to deliver a parent workshop. This will be held from 8.30-9.30am on Thursday 9th February in the Prep School Henderson Hall (we have chosen a morning slot as we have had feedback that many parents find the mornings easier). Breakfast refreshments will be provided. David will be sharing ideas on how to manage anxiety, encourage independence and promote wellbeing in children. There will be lots of practical advice and tips and an opportunity for you to ask questions.

This Week

As the season of Christmas draws to a close, our minds now go forward to the ongoing ministry of Jesus. We skip the 40 days in the wilderness to which we will return in just a few weeks as Lent begins. Instead, we hear of the beginnings of Jesus’ ministry. It is significant that from the start there was opposition. In an echo of Herod’s persecution of the child Jesus, so his son continues the opposition, killing John the Baptist and resulting in Jesus leaving for the north and the shoreline town of Capernaum. There Jesus has his first encounter with those who would become his disciples and, in an echo of so many other instances in Sacred Scripture, the choice is an unusual one. We may imagine what type of person is needed to become a great leader, one who will become the greatest communicator and witness to faith in Jesus. We probably wouldn’t pick an illeducated, labourer-fisherman from an insignificant and despised northern area of the kingdom. Yet that is exactly what Jesus did as he chose Peter, along with Andrew, James and John (Matthew 4:12-23). What was it about this individual that Jesus found so compelling? The clue is in the invitation, ‘Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.’ Perhaps it was the faithful persistence of the fisherman that attracted Jesus, perhaps the ability to face success and failure in equal measure, perhaps just the ability for hard work, or perhaps still more the ability to ‘cast out the net’ in faithful hope of the harvest. Whatever the reason, Jesus saw the unique contribution that Peter was able to give and gave him the opportunity to respond.

Perhaps as we reflect on the call of these first disciples, we too can remember that the call to Peter is the same as the call that we receive. God recognises our unique gifts and talents and he invites us to employ them to build up his kingdom here on earth.

We are so pleased that the weather warmed up again and hope it stays that way! It has been rather cold over the past couple of weeks and it was such a shame that we couldn’t run ridden lessons for a few days, but the ponies have become very fluffy!

Please make sure your child comes with enough layers to ride in! We only have a few raincoats on hand and they are limited in sizes. In the bitter weather a good coat and gloves make all the difference when you are on a horse!

The past week was really frozen and cold, before it luckily warmed up a bit! But when it was so cold, the arena froze which meant that the horses couldn’t be ridden! Instead, the three little ponies (Bobby, Sidan and Oliver) went out on lead hacks around Ranmore Common and enjoyed the scenery!

The horse of the week is… Mickey!
