world, Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano located in Tanzania. Fourteen women took the journey to Kilimanjaro, but only 12 made it to the summit. The ladies of Sistahs to the Summit appeared on “CBS Mornings” to discuss the difficulty of the journey and their plans to make history. The women, who are all Black women, range in age from 31 to 53. The majority of the women concurred that walking up the mountain was the most difficult thing they had ever done during a rapid-fire question and answer session. A majority of them gave the yes answer when asked if they wanted to give up. In addition to forming lifelong companions, all 14 ladies agreed—with the exception of two—that they would never do it again.

TOP 12 ACTIVITIES & SPORTS IN TANZANIA

As you can imagine, being on the tropical Indian ocean, and having Africa’s largest lakes, Tanzania has also a plenty of water sports, ranging from some of the world’s best diving (both in the ocean and and adrenaline sports. Tanzania has some incredible

BALLOON FLIGHTS

Flights by balloon take off as dawn breaks over the Serengeti, the perfect silence of the early morning plains broken only by the soft roar of the balloon. Far below, wildebeest scatter, looking everywhere but up at the silent visitor that floats over their world. Giraffe stand next to acacia trees, untroubled by the airborne visitors. After the thrill of landing, a champagne breakfast awaits, the air becoming warmer as the sun climbs in the sky and curious zebra look up from their grazing at the chink of cutlery in the still, warm bush.

Tanzania is a beautiful country. Its landscape and people make it a unique location to undertake any sport. Whether it is early morning training runs past giraffes and zebra to the shores of Lake Manyara or on the slopes on Mount Kilimanjaro, a football match against a local village team, horse riding expeditions in West Kilimanjaro or treks in the Ngorongoro Highlands or from the sun-kissed islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago to the gentle shores of Lake Victoria, the country contains immense cultural and natural wealth.

Just some of the areas to fly are the Usambara, the Rift valley and numerous hills around Mt. Meru. Microlight flights are now also available over Lake Manyara and the Great Rift Valley.

GOLFING

DEEP SEA FISHING

The water around Zanzibar and Pemba islands is considered by experts to offer some of the best fishing in the world, especially the Pemba Channel, between Zanzibar and Pemba islands, or around Mafia Island, south of Zanzibar. Big game fish include barracuda, kingfish, sailfish, billfish, wahoo, Dorado and blue marlin.

Although not a golfing destination, there are numerous golf courses throughout the country, including Dar es Salaam and Arusha. The local clubs are always very welcoming to any visitor who may wish to swing the odd club. Contact your tour operator for details as to the nearest golf course to where you might be staying.

SPA TREATMENTS

there are now several hotels and lodges in Tanzania and Zanzibar offering world class spa facilities to keep you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

PARAGLIDING & MICROLIGHT FLIGHTS

There are some fabulous areas to paraglide. Very few people paraglide in Tanzania, therefore it is a novelty. Always seek permission from the local village, explain what you are doing and where you think you will land (it is illegal to fly over national parks).

The perfect way to ease limbs after an exhilarating day’s game viewing or in preparation for the beach,

BOAT SAFARIS

The soft chug of an outboard engine, or the whispering flap of a canvas sail; boat safaris in Tanzania are a tranquil and relaxing way to watch wildlife. One of the best ways to see the Selous Game Reserve, up the huge muddy brown sweep of the Rufiji River, leopard whisking away from rocks at the boat’s approach. Sail into chimpanzee territory on a dhow, skimming over the Wami River in Saadani, surrounded by amazing birdlife, hippos and alligators.

Canoeing trips are available in the Arusha National Park and are a wonderful experience, drifting past herds of elephant, giraffe, hippo and buffalo as you cruise along the shores of the Lake surrounded by countless flocks of birds.

prize. Mt Meru, another of Tanzania’s volcanic peaks, is also popular, with the varied animal and plant life to be found on its slopes a major draw. Meru is Africa’s fifth highest peak, with fabulous views of Mt Kilimanjaro and the Momela Lakes from the summit. The challenging ascent to the crater of Ol Donyo Lengai passes through some fantastic scenery, with panoramic

bush is a wonderful way to experience Africa intimately. Smells and sounds become distinct and varied, and smaller creatures gain significance. They are no longer simply rushed past in the race for the bigger game. When larger animals do appear, they are met at eye level; the land is truly shared between humans and animals. Safety is not an issue- all walks are accompanied by armed, experienced guides and game rangers. Walks can be from a few hours to a full day with picnic lunch. Many hotels and camps will offer guided walks in the national parks or community areas.

Speaking at the official opening of SITE 2022, Pindi Chana, the minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, said the Swahili International Tourism Expo was established in 2014 to promote Tanzania’s tourist attractions and investment opportunities. It is a part of the implementation of a tourism marketing strategy to attract tourists to visit destination Tanzania and increase tourism contribution to the country’s economy.

Seminars on Conservation & sustainable tourism, as well as tropical tourism and travelling within East Africa, were additional subjects of promotion at S!TE 2022.

and investment opportunities with potential investors around the world. The forum was jointly organised by Tanzania

Investment Centre (TIC), Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority (ZIPA), Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB), and Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF).

The expo was also characterised by a set of cultural performances from renowned and celebrated African artistes, who helped fan the theme of the expo even further, leaving the invited guests, buyers and exhibitors practically amazed.

S!TE 2023 plans to have an even more successful event next year, and hopes to enhance the cultural aspect of tourism even further. S!TE also hopes to have more regional tourism organisations and associations participate.

CRBD BANK DISHES 5BN

Support youth and women entrepreneurs

CRDB Bank has been setting aside 5.0bn/yearly through capital injection for youth and women entrepreneurs in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The lender is implementing the programme dubbed “IMBEJU” which was launched on 28th October 2022 at the sixth ICT workshop that brought together participants from in and outside the country.

CRDB is implementing the initiative in collaboration with ICT Commission and to start with, has given the Commission 50m/- to dish out for digital startups.

Minister of Information, Communication and ICT Nape Nnauye said, when launching the programme, that the initiative will assist in the creation of economic integration for both youth and women.

“The majority of people in the country are youth and women,” Mr Nnauye said. “Despite that, they are the most economically dependent group.

“The government has been making great efforts to empower this group. I salute CRDB for its support.”

Through the programme, young people will present their business plans, and innovative ideas to students, and then a group of experts will analyse and grant capital and training according to a list of laid down procedures.

CRDB Group CEO and Managing Director, Abdulmajid Nsekela, said that through ‘IMBEJU’, the bank will be providing enabling capital to young and entrepreneurial women with business and innovative ideas.

“Under IMBEJU we will also be providing training in business management, the use of IT systems, financial and marketing education, and assistance in improving products and innovative ideas,” Mr Nsekela said.

The bank will also establish a special training and business innovation centre at the former Headquarters of the CRDB on Azikiwe Street in Dar es Salaam.

The centre will be managed in collaboration with the IT Commission. The programme placed greater emphasis on startups in the IT sector, focusing more on stimulating the digital economy.

The ICT Commission Director General, Dr Nkundwe Mwasaga, said they envisage that the ‘IMBEJU’ programme will rapidly stimulate the growth of young businesses in the economy.

The IMBEJU goes in line with the slogan “Leave No One Behind” of the Sustainable Development Goals (SGD) 2030 which emphasises the empowerment of marginalised groups and tackling inequality in economic opportunities.

Marafiki Music Festival 2022

A Celebration of live Afro-fusion music

This year’s Marafiki Music Festival was a chance to experience the cream of East African talent performing live on stage. The four-day event took place in October across two venues – Kijiji cha Makumbusho in Dar es Salaam and firefly, a boutique lodge in Bagamoyo.

During the four-day occasion, the festival engaged in several activities which include open conversation and debates about the music business that will be conducted under the theme, ‘Growing Your Brand Towards International Market’.

The event kicked off with a road parade, whereby artists and participants walked from

ASEDEVA to Village museums followed by a workshop at Nafasi Arts Space for all art stakeholders. The Workshop topic was “Growing your brand towards the International market” by Lorenz Herrmann, 33 participants attended the workshop. Later, the stage was pampered with an amazing performance from Anna Kattoa, Katoi wa tabaka and the Mijikenda Jazz Band, Warriors from the east, Richie Lumambo, Tamimu, and the Dj session from Rdj Kwaro.

Second day the event opened up with the workshop session at Nafasi art space, whereby the workshop was facilitated by Msafiri Zawose “Fusion techniques on traditional and contemporary

music” the workshop had 33 attendees from the arts sector. At night the fire of entertainment was lit on the stage by the Mambo tribe, Vitali maembe & watupa mawe, Boukuru, Lumumba theatre, and Rdj Blackiie during the Dj session. Their performance was overwhelming and they left a mark on the hearts of our audiences.

The last day of the 3rd edition of the Marafiki Music Festival was held at Firefly Bagamoyo. The stage had an extraordinary performance from an amazing lineup that includes Pipillon, Hilary More, Steve DC, And Man fongo.

Marafiki Music Festival brings

different art stakeholders and experts to share their experiences with artists in order to build artist capacity in various areas of their art and creativity – allowing patrons to enjoy wonderful live music and gain knowledge at the same time.

This year, the festival was a part of the #SANAAPRO Project, which is funded by the Embassy of France in Tanzania. Through this fund support, Marafiki Festival has managed to assemble artists and musicians from different countries for the showcases and knowledge exchange sessions.

The Marafiki Music Festival is organised by ASEDEVA and

I NOVEMBER 2022

When the colors mix on a fabric to form bold, vibrant designs, you get a stunning African print. Tanzanian designers are not letting that opportunity pass by, they use all their imagination to create masterpieces.

They are claiming the fashion industry stage from the Swahili Fashion Week in Dar es Salaam to the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in South Africa. Tanzanian designers are pushing the boundaries with a simple “Kitenge” leaving masterpieces in their wake.

Eleanor is the Tanzanian fashion designer who has dedicated a passion for fashion by designing wedding and evening outfits for almost two years. She has been designing and selling wedding outfits as well as attending different fashion events especially in China including world fashion week

Every month Dar Life dedicates this section to young emerging and wellknown designers who want to create brands and use the fashion platform as a stepping stone towards achieving their dream. This month we met Eleanor whose ideas in designing clothes and accessories are amazing, you must watch out!

Eleanor was born in Mwanza-Tanzania as a fourth born among seven children, then graduated her degree at the College of business education Dar es Salaam in 2014. She started working firstly as the administrative officer at arctic holdings Iringa up to 2016, then as the bank officer at CRDB Bank plc Mwanza up to 2018.

Dedicating her passion for fashion, she established her own fashion brand (ENOFITS) for designing wedding and evening dresses while working, which lead to discover that she needed more knowledge, skills and experience for something she likes the most thus she decided to quit her job and relocated to China while continuing with the business expecting to gain more knowledge and create connections with different people from different places for raw materials, new ideas and expansion.

Her customers are located in Tanzania so she has one employee in Tanzania who manages all activities that demand Enofits presence like taking measurements, collecting orders, controlling payments and delivery. In the near future she plans to open a designing garment and a training Centre in Tanzania for youth with designing passion.

Currently the business is conducted online but in the near future we’re looking forward to opening a garment, clothing store and a fashion designing training centre in Dar es salaam – Tanzania.

Enofits is a business brand which deals with designing and selling wedding and evening outfits mainly in Tanzania since December 2017. More of our attention is paid to details and quality of the products we provide to bring out that perfect look to customers. The idea came out after realizing that finding a perfect outfit for a special event is always stressful so considering a talent and love for fashion, we considered establishing this brand.
