Free Child Car Seat Safety Checks
Penrith City Council will offer free child restraint safety checks to local residents in May 2023. The checks will be undertaken by an authorised Child Restraint Fitter.
Australian law requires children travelling in cars to be secured in approved restraints, which means children:
• younger than 6 months must be secured in a rear-facing restraint
• 6 months to 4 years must be secured in a rear or forward-facing restraint
• 4 to 7 years must be secured in a forward-facing restraint or booster seat
• younger than 4 years must travel in the back seat of a vehicle with 2 or more rows.
A 15-minute safety check will give you peace of mind next time you hit the road. You’ll get your car seats checked by a professional and get the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about driving safely with kids.

Riley’s Big Chop
Four year old Riley Faulder of Jordan Springs has made the ultimate sacrifice, having his long hair cut off for the very first time, all in the name of charity.
The inspiring youngster took part in Riley’s Big Chop, where he raised money for Variety the Children’s Charity’s Hair with Heart last month.
The event took place on 26th March at the Colonial Hotel in Werrington. Riley had 37.5cm of his hair cut and donated to the charity, all whilst raising valuable funds.
“We wanted Riley’s first haircut to have meaning, as there were a lot of tears and tantrums in maintaining his hair. We wanted his beautiful hair to go to good use and so we searched up hair donations” said Jasmine Dehar, Riley’s mother.
“We came across Hair with Heart, a children’s charity who make wigs for sick children with medical conditions such as cancer and alopecia. They also fund grants, scholarships and programs that help Aussie kids 0 - 18 who are sick, experiencing disadvantage or living with a disability” she continued.
The experience of seeing Riley lose his long locks for the first time was one of both sadness and happiness.
“It was a mixture of emotions. It’s sad to see our baby transform into a little boy, but also relieving that there will be no more tears whilst brushing his hair” Jasmine explained.
Jasmine and her family would like to thank the local community for getting behind and supporting Riley in his inspirational quest.
“We would like to thank the small businesses who generously donated to Riley’s cause. This includes Woolworths Jordan Springs, BWS Jordan Springs, XS Espresso, Fadez R Us for donating his time and skills in cutting Riley’s hair, The Colonial Hotel and of course, all the people who directly donated to his page. We are super grateful for all the support” she smiled.
If you would like to support Riley, you can donate at https:// hairwithheart.variety.org.au/fundraisers/jasminedehar/hairwith-heart.

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO

A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday
Easter raises the question: how can we argue for the efficacy of the crucifixion of Jesus, the Christ? First, it is grounded in his life, execution and resurrection which effected the lives of the first Christians who recognized a new dimension in life. Second, that new dimension entailed that for the first time in religious history the act of forgiveness became a reality. For the individual, the group, society at large, forgiveness is that which enables a fresh start: Jesus states your sins are forgiven go sin no more.
Third, in forgiveness the efficacy of his crucifixion is found in the acceptance and the working out in life recognizing that a new dimension in the power of the Holy Spirit is achieved. Fourth, placed within the context of history this efficacy is very new, with most arguing that human life is up to 40,000 years old and in itself a mere ‘blink’ in the overall history of the universe.
Fifth, the efficacy of the crucifixion placed in this context still holds firm with the growth of religious thought and practice that is a fascinating growth that has travelled many ways. What his execution has done is to provide a definitive answer to the religious dimension of life. Sadly, the efficacy that can enable and unite has become a human weakness continually distorted. But when accepted and embraced, allows creativity and a new life.
So, why the crucifixion? Simply because Jesus the Christ, in challenging the religious and political ethos in his day was executed for daring to challenge with the question “who do you think I am”? 2,000 plus years have gone by, but his challenge and power of forgiveness continue to be accepted and lived.

Every Birth is Death … and Every Death is a New Beginning
Recently, I came across a cartoon of two children in the womb having an argument of sorts. The cartoon pictured one child confidently telling the other to, “Don’t be silly. Of course, there’s no such thing as life after birth!”
Imagine for a moment the scene. In a mother’s womb, one child is asking the other, “Do you believe in life after delivery?” To which the other replies, “Why of course. There has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here in this place in order to prepare ourselves for what we will be later.”
“Nonsense” says the other. There is no life after delivery. What would that life be?”
“Well, I don’t know” says the first. “But there will be more light than here. Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat from our mouths”, to which the other responds incredulously, “That’s absurd. Walking is impossible. And eat with our mouths? Ridiculous. The umbilical cord supplies nutrition. There’s no such thing as ‘life after delivery.’ Besides, the umbilical cord is too short.”
“Well, I think there is something” the other replies. “And maybe it’s different than it is here.”
“But … but no one has ever come back from there” says the other. “Delivery is the end of life …and after delivery is nothing but darkness and anxiety and nothingness.”
What a strange conversation, given what we now know of life this side of birth! But, what about death? If it is true, that “Jesus Christ was crucified and on the third day raised from the dead,” then this means that Easter changes literally EVERYTHING, both in this world and the next.

Jordan Springs Cricket Club Juniors Dominate
Jordan Springs Cricket Club have capped off the 2022/2023 Summer season with another successful year on the pitch, including strength in the junior ranks.
There were about 200 players registered this year, consisting of 14 teams. This comprised of 12 junior teams and 2 senior teams.
Six teams would dominate the season, with the Under 10’s, Under 11’s, Under 12’s, Under 13’s, Under 15’s and 6th Grade progressing to the finals. This would later see five go on to win their premierships – Under 10’s, Under 11’s, Under 12’s, Under 13’s and 6th Grade.
The dominance of the junior teams showed just why they are a powerhouse in the Penrith Junior Cricket Association (PJCA) competition.
“I’m proud of how the club performed this season. They all worked very hard” said Sunil Chhabra, Jordan Springs Cricket Club Founder to the Jordan Springs Gazette.
“It’s been great to watch the kid’s performances improve over the last couple of years” he added.
The club’s introduction of tennis ball cricket three seasons ago has particularly grown with popularity. With lots of interest from families, it is bringing new members and the community is coming together.
“More Dads are taking up tennis ball cricket. It’s fantastic to see them playing sport and staying active. With the games scheduled at night, families enjoy the atmosphere it creates in Jordan Springs” Sunil explained.
The highly anticipated 2022/2023 Summer season presentations for both the juniors and seniors will be held this month.
“We would like to thank the parents and volunteers for their continued hard work and support. They too contribute to the success of the club” he ended.
The Winter Competition is expected to begin after Easter. For more information about registrations or the club, visit their website at www.jordanspringscricketclub.com.au or find them on Facebook.

Youngcare Soon to Open Doors to First Specialist Disability Housing
in Jordan Springs
Youngcare - a national not-for-profit that is revolutionising the way young people with high physical support needs live, will complete construction on its two new three-bedroom Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) homes at Jordan Springs soon.
The Jordan Springs homes, which six young people with high physical support needs will call home, are Youngcare’s first SDA in New South Wales and were made possible thanks to the ongoing generosity of the organisation’s donors and supporters.
Prior to completion of the homes, four prospective residents visited to participate in Youngcare’s ‘My New Room’ initiative. Builders installed a wheelchair ramp on the construction site to create suitable access for the potential housemates to test paint options and chose a feature wall colour for their bedrooms, with assistance from family and support workers.
Youngcare CEO Greg Johnson said the ‘My New Room’ initiative reflects the not-for-profit’s mission to provide young Australians with high physical support needs with more choice and control over their living situation by including them in the design stage of their new SDA home, which is never usually an option.
“Young people with disabilities are often left behind living in places that simply aren’t appropriate for their age or care needs, such as aged care, hospital or rehabilitation facilities,” Greg said.
“Youngcare is focused on creating change for these young people and their families, and one way we do that is by delivering beautiful SDA homes that exceed the minimum requirements for accessible housing by elevating design and technology aspects while making them age-appropriate by maximising location and lifestyle.
“We are thrilled to introduce the ‘My New Room’ initiative, which is a new and exciting opportunity we hope to implement and expand on in all of our future builds, as we passionately advocate for young people with high physical support needs to have more choice and control over their own living arrangements,” Greg said.
“These aspirational SDA homes are Youngcare’s first foray into New South Wales, but certainly not our last, and we look forward to expanding our portfolio across Australia in the coming years.”
Youngcare Head of Housing and Development Tim Lambert said the not-for-profit is already looking for future opportunities in and around Penrith and its surrounding suburbs.
“Like many different areas of rapid development in suburbs across Australia, there is a need for homes to be built within local communities, and we are excited to provide residents with unrivalled choice and independence,” Tim said.
With an ever-expanding portfolio of SDA, the organisation’s focus is now shifting to include fighting for Australia to become more inclusive and accessible for people of all abilities.
“While we have always been on a mission to get young people into our homes, this year Youngcare will be working even harder to get them out and about. It is so important that people of all abilities can get out into their community without struggling to access transport or get into venues,” Greg said.
“We want accessibility to become the new normal, so we’re passionately advocating for change.”
Youngcare’s Jordan Springs SDA homes that cater to high physical support are still currently accepting expressions of interest, so if you or someone you know would love to move in and are eligible for appropriate NDIS funding, please visit the Youngcare website or call Youngcare Connect on 1800 844727.

Responding to Children’s Good Behaviour
Many parenting articles talk about dealing with difficult behaviour and yet, the ways we respond to children’s positive behaviour is just as important.
Due to an inbuilt negativity bias, we pay more attention to the bad than the good. The human species has survived for over 200,000 years in part because of our capacity to be alerted early to potential threats. While a focus on the negative would be useful for survival in the Savannah, it can greatly harm a parent’s relationship with their child when left unchecked.
For children with behavioural difficulties and their parents, a vicious cycle can develop over time. When a child behaves in a manner which elicits a punitive, angry, or hostile response from the parent, this often provokes the child to behave in an even more disruptive manner, and then the conflict escalates and continues.
Conversely, we build more positive relationships with children when we notice and remark on behaviour we appreciate. It helps children learn social and other life skills, it builds children’s confidence and sense of self, and it re-connects us to our love for our children.
The first step is to notice when you feel good (e.g., relief, comfort, pride, delight) in response to something your child has said or done. For specific behaviour concerns, look out for the exceptions. For example, if you are concerned about your child swearing, look out for times when your child speaks politely.
Focus on conveying genuine feelings, rather than providing an evaluation of the child’s behaviour. Avoid vague platitudes like “good boy/good girl”. Praise that feels mechanical or disingenuous can feel manipulative for the child.
Talk about how your child’s action positively affected you. Impacts might be concrete (e.g., in time, energy, money) or relate to your values (e.g., honesty, integrity, respect). Specifically describe the behaviour that you appreciated and why. For example, “I appreciate it when you wash up your cup, because now I have less dishes to do later.”
Sharing appreciation is one of the most powerful ways of building your bond with your child, so it is worth taking the time and effort to do it well and often.

THE EASTER CHARACTERS
NAME
Easter Safety for Pets
Easter is a fun time of year filled with spending time with family and pets, a relaxing long weekend, the annual Easter egg hunt and of course chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate! But for our pets, there are lots of hazards around which could turn a relaxing weekend into an emergency trip to the vet.
Easter eggs and chocolate - Chocolate is usually in abundance in most households when Easter comes around. Our pets are more likely to have the chance to hoover up sweet treats, especially if they are left around on low surfaces or on the floor. Although harmless to us chocolate can make dogs extremely ill and can even be fatal. This is due to a toxin called Theobromine. Pets metabolise this chemical much slower than humans, meaning it can have detrimental effects. Symptoms of Theobromine poisoning include muscle stiffness, tremors, vomiting, heart arrhythmias and seizures. If you think your pet has eaten chocolate, we’d recommend you take them to your vet immediately.
Hot cross buns - Hot Cross buns are another food that we love to eat but can be dangerous to our pets as they contain raisins and other dried fruits Unfortunately these can cause kidney failure in both dogs and cats. Kidney failure classically causes increased thirst and urination; however, symptoms are usually seen weeks later when the secondary effects of reduced kidney function become evident.
Confectionary - Sweets and lollies are also a popular Easter favourite. Unfortunately, some sweets contain a substance called Xylitol, which is an artificial sweetener. It is extremely harmful to dogs and even a small amount can be toxic. If your dog eats
sweets made with xylitol, monitor for any vomiting, lethargy, lack of coordination and seizures and seek veterinary advice.
Easter Baskets - Easter baskets are a lovely gift idea and are great for kids as you can put small toys and other treats in there. Small toys and filler material like straw and plastic grass (very appealing to cats as it’s fun to play with) are easily swallowed by pets. This is likely to cause digestive obstruction, which may lead to an emergency surgery. Symptoms may include persistent vomiting, bloating, weight loss, weakness and dehydration.
Lilies – Easter lilies (along with many other types of lilies) are often gifted around Easter time, and although they help to brighten the house up, they too can be extremely toxic to cats. Every part of the lily is dangerous; this even includes the water it’s sitting in! It causes kidney failure and can be fatal if treatment isn’t given quickly. Some of the signs your cat may be suffering from lily poisoning are as follows: dehydration, extreme thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures and even death.
Sadly, the majority of toxins mentioned won’t show symptoms until the damage is already done and at which point it is not reversible, especially raisins and lilies which effect the kidney.
Wishing you all an enjoyable and safe Easter break.

A Touch of Malta
Nanna Clara’s Maltese Kitchen is a small business that are passionate about bringing homemade Maltese food to life. It was established in 2018 by Jenny Aquilina.
“I was inspired by the way that the Maltese community embraces the love of food and how they share their family time around the dining table” explained Jenny to the District Gazette.
“Maltese love the traditional way of cooking. With so many people living busy lifestyles, I thought it was time to share my love of cooking Maltese food the way my Nanna showed me” she added.
The name of the food business did indeed come from Jenny’s grandmother, paying homage to her much loved Nanna Clara.
“Nanna Clara is my grandmother’s name. When I was young, I used to watch her cook in the kitchen and, of course, sampling the food as she cooked. So, I named my food van after her” Jenny smiled.
It’s no secret that Nanna Clara’s Maltese Kitchen’s pastizzis are popular.
“What can I say, I have the best pastizzi here in Sydney. I also sell the well known corned beef pie. I even have the privilege of coming in the Top 5 in Australia for this” she said.
Maltese doughnuts are always a crowd favourite. Baked Macaroni and Baked Rice are on the menu. The Ravioli is all made by hand. She also sells Peppered Cheese.
“The beauty of being a mobile business is that Nanna Clara’s Maltese Kitchen can attend all the Maltese festas in and around Sydney. If you can’t come to me, follow our social media pages and drop me a DM” Jenny replied.
“I am available to do any function you may have. You can even surprise your Nanna or Nunnu with the memories of the good old days back in Malta, with the love of home cooked meals” she ended. Grazzi!

Ulcerative Colitis - Could Oral N-Acetyl-Cysteine Supplementation Help Patients?
Scientists can induce an ulcerative colitis (UC) like condition in rats and pigs by intrarectal administration of acetic acid. The acid damages the colonic epithelial (lining) cells. Damaged cells release inflammatory chemicals in order to inform/warn surrounding tissue cells and bring immune cells into the area to investigate and deal with the cause/s of cell damage. Eventually, the death of epithelial cells leads to ulcer formation in the rectum and colon. How acetic acid induces colitis is still unclear, but reactive oxygen species produced by the activated immune system cells plays a significant role.
Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide (i.e., a tiny protein). GSH is made in the liver, which acts as a GSH reservoir. GSH is made from the essential amin acid cysteine. Being ‘essential’ means that cysteine, unlike many other amino acids, can’t be made by our bodies but must be gotten from the diet. Once made, GSH is delivered via the blood stream to all body cells. Inside body cells, it plays a critical role in protecting them against cell damage from:
1. immune-system-generated (microbe killing) free radicals.
2. free radicals generated during energy production by mitochondria.
3. many other toxins made inside body-cells.
4. toxic agents from external sources e.g., pollution related chemicals
a. Nitric oxide
b. sulphur oxide
c. cigarette smoke compounds, etc
GSH quickly neutralises these toxic agents.
The maintenance of excellent GSH levels inside cells is key to overcoming harmful effects of immune system generated free radicals, which can damage and kill cells such as colonic epithelial cells in UC.
So, could cysteine supplementation such as N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) help treat UC?
When acetic acid is used to induce ulcerative colitis, giving animals high (500mg/kg) daily oral doses of NAC inhibits:
1. colonic epithelial cell death
2. breakdown of normal epithelial layer structure
3. ulcer formation
4. formation of:
a. free-radical producing enzymes (and damaging free-radicals)
b. cell death promoting signals and raises the local hormone EGF, which promotes colonic epithelial cell survival, proliferation, growth, and migration to speed ulcer healing.
UC patients given NAC (800mg/day), plus mesalazine (2.4 g/day), the standard of care for UC, improved clinical response rates by 50% i.e., 44% of patients responded with clinical improvement with mesalazine-only, while 66% responded to mesalazine plus NAC.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT
EMU SPORTS CLUB
1 Leonay Parade, Leonay NSW 2750
This month, my support worker Michelle and I decided to have lunch at Emu Sports Club at Leonay. This venue is family friendly and even has a play area for kids.
Having visited this venue many times over, I was very keen to try the Garlic Bread with cheese and chilli flakes on top. Michelle and I shared this Garlic Bread and we were impressed with the flavour of the cheese and how soft this Garlic Bread was. The chilli flakes on top gave this bread some spice and it was not too spicy. I can say it was mild. All the flavours went together, and I recommend this Garlic Bread.
When browsing through the menu, I settled on a 300gm Porterhouse Steak, which was accompanied by a scrumptious salad and some chips. I also asked for my Steak to become a surf and turf, with prawns on top. Along with this was the sauce, which had a slight garlic/curry flavour. It was exceptional. I chose Italian dressing on the salad and the dressing was outstanding. The Steak was perfectly cooked and the flavours were sealed in and the char grilled taste gave it extra flavours. It was amazing and full of flavour. The salad was crisp, not boring, and came with carrot, onion, lettuce, cucumber, and other ingredients.
Michelle chose the Southern Style Chicken Burger, which I have had previously. She was impressed with the flavour and how juicy the chicken was. This Burger is recommended for those who enjoy Southern Style Chicken.
I give Emu Sports Club a ten out of ten.
The staff are always friendly, the service is efficient, and I have never encountered any problems while visiting this venue. If you have not visited Emu Sports Club, I highly recommend this venue to everyone.
